Adult Moroccan rams of two different genotypes were compared on the basis of seasonality, fertility and sensitivity to gonadal feedback on the pituitary and hypothalamus. One breed with less seasonal breeding and high fertility, D'Man and one with less fertility and marked seasonal variation in breeding behaviour, Bnihsen. Four animals in each genotype were hemicastrated and 9 mo later castrated, to examine the effect of hormonal control on the hypothalamo-hypophyseal feedback system. Nine months after hemicastration the D'Man breed showed higher gonadotrophine values (LH, FSH). The remaining testicule in turn produced more estradiol-17beta but less testosterone in these rams. The testosterone production was increased in the Bnihsen rams following castration. After castration the FSH values increased rapidly in all animals with higher values for the D'Man rams. LH-release was faster in the hemicastrated rams than in controls. This is the first report on differences for hormonal feedback-systems in adult rams from different genotypes. The hormonal feedback-system is less sensitive for adult rams from breeds with higher fertility and nonseasonaly. In addition to that it was found that a difference seems to exist in the regulation for the release of FSH and LH.  相似文献

A trial was conducted over 3 years to evaluate the success of inducing puberty in heifers of young age and light weight and to evaluate their subsequent reproductive performance at first calving. The control heifers and the young age heifers were grown at a rate of .56 kg/day compared to .23 kg/day for the light weight heifers. Eleven days prior to the start of breeding, heifers in the young age and light weight groups received the Synchromate B treatment. Implants were removed after 9 days. Average age and weight at breeding were 407, 334 and 406 days and 266, 239 and 243 kg for control, young age and light weight groups, respectively. After a 45-day breeding season 91, 47 and 81% of the heifers in the control, young age and light weight groups, respectively, (P<.05) had been in estrus. Pregnancy rates of the heifers that came into estrus were 67, 7 and 63% for the control, young age and light weight heifers, respectively, (P<.05) at the end of the 45-day breeding season. In the control and light weight groups 95 and 79% (P<.05) of the heifers that were diagnosed pregnant calved. Postpartum interval was 24 days shorter (P<.05) in the light weight heifers suckling calves and calf survival was 16% lower (P<.01) in the light weight group compared to the control heifers.  相似文献

Spring-born Merino ram lambs were reared on 130%, 165% or 200% of recommended maintenance energy requirements from 7 to 12 mo of age and were then placed on a common plane of nutrition from 12 to 25 mo of age. During the latter 13 mo, the 24 rams were studied for changes in live-weight and testicle characteristics. Semen characteristics and sexual activity were observed from 12 to 19 mo of age. At the beginning of the study, groups coming from low (L), medium (M), and high (H) nutrition had liveweights of 38.9, 46.8, and 53.6 kg (P < 0.05) and scrotal circumferences of 24.6, 28.9, and 32.1 cm (P < 0.05), respectively. When the rams were given common feed conditions, the differences between groups in both liveweight and scrotal circumference quickly decreased and were not significant by the sixth month. No significant differences existed between groups in ejaculate characteristics during semen collection, except in sperm density which, at the end of semen collection, was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in Group M (3.98 x 10(9)/ml) than in Group L (2.55 x 10(9)/ml). However, in analyses of pooled data, there were significant differences between months of collection in sperm density, total number of sperm per ejaculate, and percentages of live and abnormal sperm. The data indicate that differential nutrition during the first year of life will affect some reproductive characters contemporaneously, but with restored feeding, reproductive differences are resolved more quickly than those in liveweight and the changes proceed despite countervailing photoperiodic influences.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken once per week for 4-7 weeks from 59 buffalo calves in 14 age groups, 1-2 months apart. Hormones were quantified by validated radioimmunoassays. Values of androstenedione and testosterone were low at birth (141.3 +/- 33.5 pg/ml and 18.0 +/- 2.9 pg/ml, respectively; mean +/- s.d.). Serum androstenedione concentrations gradually increased from birth until 8 months of age and declined (P less than 0.05) thereafter, whereas mean testosterone values were low up to 8 months and then significantly (P less than 0.05) increased as age advanced. LH concentrations averaged 2.12 +/- 0.47 ng/ml at birth. Thereafter, a decline in LH values was followed by an increase between 6 and 15 months of age. We conclude that, in buffalo bull calves, the pubertal period occurs from about 8 to 15 months of age. For pubertal buffalo bulls 15-17 months of age, serum concentrations of androstenedione, testosterone and LH were 156.9 +/- 54.6 pg/ml, 208.4 +/- 93.8 pg/ml and 2.10 +/- 0.70 ng/ml, respectively.  相似文献

Developments in the use of drugs to improve reproduction and embryo production have focused on estrus and ovulation synchronization protocols and embryonic survival. Protocols for synchronization of ovulation eliminate the need for detection of estrus and allow timed insemination of all cows enrolled. Various estrogenic, progestational, GnRH and PGF2 alpha-like drugs are used to synchronize follicle development, CL regression and induction of ovulation. Strategies are discussed to optimize such programs to maximize herd pregnancy rates. Use of bovine Somatotrophin (bST) in combination with the Ovsynch protocol resulted in increased pregnancy rates, indicating possible effects on oocyte and embryonic development. Treatment of embryo donor cows with bST reduced the proportion of unfertilized oocytes and increased the number of transferable embryos. Furthermore, bST increased pregnancy rate when given to the recipient. Sub-luteal plasma progesterone concentrations after insemination have been associated with lower pregnancy rates. Injection of hCG on day 5 post-insemination resulted in induction of an accessory CL, increased plasma progesterone concentrations and increased conception rates. Strategies involving the use of sustained GnRH agonists to enhance CL development and alter follicular development are considered for future programs to enhance pregnancy rates.  相似文献

Twelve autumn-born Hereford x Friesian heifers were studied to characterize changes in the patterns of LH and FSH secretion occurring from birth through the peripubertal period. A once weekly blood sampling regimen, starting 3 days after birth, was combined with periods of frequent sampling (15-min intervals for 24 h) every month from 3 weeks of age. Mean plasma LH concentrations decreased over the period from birth to 15 weeks of age, largely due to a decrease in basal LH concentrations. Thereafter, mean plasma LH concentrations increased to 39 weeks of age, mainly as a consequence of increasing LH episode frequency and LH episode amplitude. Oestrus was detected using an oestradiol-treated steer, and ovulation inferred from progesterone profiles. A 'short luteal phase' oestrous cycle preceded the first observed oestrus, and this was followed in all heifers by a normal length luteal phase. However, no increase in mean LH concentrations, basal LH concentrations, LH episode frequency, LH episode amplitude or change in mean FSH concentration could be directly associated with the onset of puberty. It is therefore concluded that the gonadotrophic stimulus for first ovulation must occur abruptly.  相似文献

Observations relating testes size to body weight in growing and adult Polish Merino rams were performed during 3 consecutive years in a flock of 1700 pedigree ewes. October-born ram lambs were measured for testis diameter (TD), scrotal circumference (SC), and body weight (BW) at 100 (January), 150 (March), 180 (April), 240 (June), 365 (October), and 480 d (February) of age. In adult rams (n = 63 to 73 per year) BW and SC were measured in March, May (prior to breeding), August and October. Semen quality was evaluated before each breeding season, and the results of controlled reproductive performance (2 natural services to designated rams) were analyzed. Indices were applied to relate testis size to body weight: TD BW , SC BW and TW BW . Heritability estimates of testes indices in ram lambs at 100 to 240 d and at 480 d of age ranged from 0.21 to 0.36 (SE = 0.067 to 0.090). The present study is focused on the proteome of reproductive tract fluids from tropically-adapted Santa Ines rams. Seminal plasma, cauda epididymal (CEF) and vesicular gland fluid (VGF) proteins were analyzed by 2-D electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. Seminal plasma maps contained 302 ± 16 spots, within the 4-7 pH range. From these maps, 73 spots were identified, corresponding to 41 proteins. Ram Seminal Vesicle Proteins (RSVP) 14 and 22kDa and bodhesins 1 and 2 represented the most abundant seminal components. Other seminal proteins included clusterin, angiotensin-converting enzyme, matrix metalloproteinase-2, tissue-inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2, plasma glutamate carboxypeptidase, albumin, lactoferrin, alpha enolase, peroxiredoxin, leucine aminopeptidase, β-galactosidase, among others. Later, seminal plasma gels were run within narrow pH intervals (3.9-5.1; 4.7-5.9; 5.5-6.7), allowing the additional identification of 21 proteins not detected in 4-7 pH maps. Major proteins of CEF and VGF were albumin and transferrin, and RSVPs, respectively. Western blots confirmed that RSVPs were mainly present in VGF while bodhesins, in VGF and CEF. Based on RT-PCR, RSVP and bodhesin genes were primarily expressed in the vesicular glands. In summary, the reproductive tract fluids of Brazilian hairy rams contain several categories of proteins, with potential roles in sperm protection, capacitation, acrosome reaction and sperm-oocyte interaction.  相似文献

In many social insects the relationship between reproductive dominance and physiological correlates is poorly understood. Recent evidence now strongly suggests that cuticular hydrocarbons are important in reproductive differentiation in these societies where they are used as signals of ovarian activity in reproductive females. In this study we investigated the relationship between reproductive dominance, size of the corpora allata (CA, producer of Juvenile Hormone, JH) and the proportions of cuticular hydrocarbons present on the cuticle in overwintering foundresses and both associative (polygynous) and solitary (monogynous) pre-emergence colonies of the social wasp Polistes dominulus. Size of the CA was positively correlated with ovarian development in polygynous colonies. In contrast, solitary foundresses possessed significantly smaller CAs than dominant foundresses from polygynous nests, yet ovarian activity was similar for both female types. CA size variation was associated with variation in cuticular hydrocarbon proportions. Overwintering, solitary, dominant and subordinate (from associative nests) females all possessed distinctive cuticular chemical profiles revealed by multivariate discriminant analyses. Our data indicate that the social environment strongly affects reproductive physiology in this wasp, and we discuss the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in reproductive signaling in P. dominulus and other social insects.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of either a 17-day exposure to vasectomised rams or a short-term exposure to entire rams on ewe lamb reproductive performance. Seven hundred and twenty-one Romney ewe lambs, 7–9 months of age, were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups. Treatments included exposure to vasectomised rams for 17 days prior to breeding, exposure to entire rams for 4 or 2 days prior to breeding or not being exposed to either vasectomised or entire rams. Unteased ewe lambs and those exposed to entire rams for either 2 and 4 days were less (P < 0.05) likely to be mated in the first 17 days of breeding only and pregnant in the first 17 days of breeding compared to ewe lambs exposed to vasectomised rams for a full 17 days pre-breeding. Ewe lambs exposed to entire rams for 2 days were more (P < 0.05) likely to be mated in the first 8 days of breeding, mated in the first 17 days of breeding only and pregnant in the first 17 days of breeding compared to unteased ewe lambs. Therefore, a short-term exposure to entire rams can be used to induce breeding activity in ewe lambs, although it is not as effective as a full 17-day exposure to vasectomised rams.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to study seasonal variations of thyroidal activity, serum testosterone concentration and seminal characteristics of two breeds of Iranian fat-tailed sheep. Eight 3 to 4-year-old rams of Ghezel and Mehraban breeds (4 rams/breed) were randomly selected from a flock of fertile rams. Semen was collected by using an artificial vagina, and blood samples were obtained via jugular vein. Seminal characteristics, scrotal length, width, and circumference, and blood parameters were measured at 3-week intervals. Time of the year significantly (P < 0.05) affected the volume of semen, sperm concentration, percent live sperm, percent normal sperm, total sperm number, seminal pH, seminal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration, scrotal circumference, scrotal width, and serum levels of testosterone, cholesterol, triiodothyronine (T(3)), tetraiodothyronine (T(4)), free T(4) index (FT(4)I), and TSH. Scrotal length was not affected by the time of sampling (P > 0.05). The effect of breed on the serum concentrations of hormones and cholesterol was not significant. Volume of semen, percent normal sperm, and total number of normal sperm were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in Mehraban but scrotal circumference, scrotal width and scrotal length were greater in Ghezel rams. Breedxtime interaction effect was significant for T(4), FT(4)I, sperm concentration, and total sperm number. The largest values for TSH, T(4), FT(4)I, testosterone, total sperm number, percent normal sperm, percent live sperm, sperm concentration, volume of semen and scrotal circumference were found from early summer to winter and the lowest values were recorded at the end of spring and in early summer. In both breeds, high and negative correlations (r = -0.7 to -0.8) were found between LDH levels in semen and percent live sperm, percent normal sperm and total sperm number (P < 0.01). It is unlikely that such variations in seminal quality would affect the fertility under natural mating.  相似文献

Axillary buds from 5 genotypes of mulberry belonging to 4 species were cultured on modified MS basal medium. A total of 30 media combinations were tried for all the genotypes. The response of axillary buds and the requirement for growth regulators varied with genotype. In Morus indica BAP (0.25–0.5 mg/l), and in M. alba and M. rotondifolia GA3 (0.5–1.0 mg/l)were found to induce sprouting. Two genotypes of M. bombycis, namely Schimanochi and Mizusawa, developed healthy shoots on the incorporation of 2,4-D (0.5–1.0 mg/l) and BAP (0.5–2.0 mg/l), respectively. IBA (0.5 mg/l), along with cytokinin/auxin/gibberellin, had no effect on bud growth but helped root induction. Shoots developed from the axillary buds were further multiplied as nodal explants. MS basal medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l IBA and LS vitamins was found best to produce healthy plantlets in all the genotypes. Poor mating behavior results in increased ram costs, an extended lambing season, and decreased genetic progress from sires with desired production traits. Producers have recognized the importance of ram libido, but constraints regarding time, labor, and facilities generally limit the routine evaluation of ram breeding behavior. Easily measurable production traits would be an usable selection tool if correlated to reproductive performance. To determine the discriminating value of production traits as indicators of reproductive performance, white-faced rams (n = 82; 10–12 months of age) consigned to the University of Wyoming ram test were fed using the Grow-Safe® feeding system. Rams were categorized based on sexual behavior as low, intermediate or mounting. Body weight gain performance, feed intake and feeding behavior were analyzed. Overall production performance was determined using a calculated index ratio based on body weight gain adjusted for wool characteristics. Sexual behavior classification did not influence the index ratio or feed consumed per day. However, numbers of no-intake feeding episodes (P < 0.01) differed according to ram sexual behavior. Rams expressing sexual mounting behavior visited the feed bunk more often than the intermediate performing rams (P < 0.01) and tended to differ from low sexually performing rams. The numbers of visits to the feed bunk in which feed was consumed did not differ according to ram sexual behavior. Average daily gain was not correlated (r ≤ 0.18; P = 0.1) to sexual behavior. These easily attainable measures of performance did not correlate strongly with any measure of sexual behavior. This study provides evidence that rams that exhibit a high level of sexual behavior most likely investigate their environment more thoroughly, which could facilitate the identification of ewes in estrus.  相似文献

  The use of video photography normally involves sub‐aqua recording via a camcorder device. The problem is that the scientist needs to be directly involved in the recording underwater or else viewing the results of the footage after the event. The system we have developed enables real time images to be relayed to a boat, satellite of shore‐based recorder. With a two‐way audio communication system, it is possible for the scientist/team to direct the camera work of the divers, remotely. The configuration of this system are discussed, and a wide range of scientific applications suggested.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the individual differences in sexual activity of rams. In total, 374 observations were made on 17 rams (22 for each ram). The average duration of mating for all rams was 70.9 s, ranging from 30.0 to 166.7 s for particular rams. The average duration of mating for a group of ten more active rams (MAR) was 49.3 s, while for a group of seven less active rams (LAR) it was 101.8 s, the difference being highly significant. Significant differences were also found with respect to the average number of mounts per ejaculation, both between individual rams (mean 2.36) and between group MAR (2.20) and LAR (2.60). The percentage of failure, defined as copulations without ejaculation, was significantly higher in group LAR (11.1%) than in group MAR (2.5%), indicating that the rams of group MAR copulate much more efficiently than the other males. The lambing results obtained from service during the first oestrus did not show significant differences between groups MAR and LAR, neither with respect to their fertility nor to the lambing rate.  相似文献

Summary In testes of rats from 2 to 60 days of age, we examined the number of Sertoli cells (SC) and Leydig cells (LC) as well as the binding of radioiodinated gonadotropins to frozen sections and homogenates. The number of SC per testis increased only during the first 2 postnatal weeks, whereas that of LC was stable up to days 7–10 and increased thereafter. The uptake of 125I-labelled human follicle-stimulating hormone (125I-FSH) to frozen sections was confined to sex cords or seminiferous tubules, while that of 125I-labelled human choriogonadotropin (125I-hCG) matched the distribution of LC in the interstitium. High affinity receptors for FSH and hCG were found in homogenates at all stages studied. The number of FSH receptors per testis increased steadily, whereas that of hCG receptors was low until days 7–10 and rose afterwards. Thus, SC in rat testis appear to proliferate in the presence of fetal LC during the first 2 postnatal weeks and to differentiate concomitantly with the emergence of the adult LC generation after day 10. The complement of FSH receptors in SC remains constant as they proliferate and increases after day 21 as they differentiate. The hCG receptor number is relatively fixed in each LC generation, being higher in adult compared to fetal LC.  相似文献

Changes in testicular androgen receptor numbers were studied in lambs from 25 to 100 days of age. During this period, cytoplasmic receptors increased from 5 to 80 pmol/testis and nuclear receptors from 1 to 12 pmol/testis, while the total volume of Leydig cells increased 7-fold. The total number of Sertoli cells doubled between 25 and 40 days of age. From 40 days onward their number remained constant while their cellular and nuclear sizes increased by a factor of 3 and 1.5 respectively. Cytoplasmic receptor concentration was positively correlated with the number of Sertoli cells per section of seminiferous tubule, and negatively correlated with the number of germinal cells per cross section. One explanation for these results could be that Sertoli cells are the main androgen target cells in lamb seminiferous tubules.  相似文献

The relative importance of cell number and cell size in determining the mass of 16 organs and tissues in mature rams of six different breeds was studied through estimation of organ deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content. The mean fleece-free empty body weight (FFEBW) ranged from 54.6 +/- 0.3 kg for Camden Park Merinos to 76.7 +/- 1.6 kg for Strong Wool Merinos. For all organs, mass increased with FFEBW, but the relationship was significant across all sheep for only eight organs (blood, kidney, liver, abomasum, vastus lateralis muscle, skin, perirenal fat and triceps muscle). There were significant differences between breeds in the mass of 11 organs. With four (heart, rumen reticulum, small intestine and testicular fat) this difference was independent of breed differences in FFEBW, whereas with another four (kidney, abomasum, vastus lateralis muscle and skin), it was closely related to FFEBW. Breed differences in the mass of the remaining three organs (blood, liver and perirenal fat) were partly related to FFEBW and partly breed specific. Blood mass increased with FFEBW across all animals, but, within a breed, it declined as FFEBW increased. The increase in the mass of perirenal fat with FFEBW was significantly greater within a breed than between breeds. Cell number increased significantly with the mass of all organs except blood and brain. There were between-breed differences in the number of cells in seven organs (liver, heart, rumen reticulum, abomasum, small intestine, vastus lateralis muscle and skin), which, except for heart, were attributable to between-breed differences in organ mass. With heart, the increase in cell number with organ mass within a breed was greater than across all breeds. Cell size was significantly related to organ mass only with vastus lateralis muscle, spleen, perirenal fat and liver. The relationship for vastus lateralis muscle and spleen was negative, indicating that cells were smaller in larger organs. There were differences between breeds in cell size for heart, vastus lateralis and triceps muscles. These differences for heart and triceps muscle were breed specific, whereas for vastus lateralis muscle it was attributed to breed differences in organ weight. There was a 30-fold range in mean cell size across organs, with adipose tissue having the largest cells, muscle tissue intermediate and visceral tissues the smallest. In general, organ mass is positively related to FFEBW. Cell number, not cell size, is largely responsible for differences in organ mass between mature sheep of different breeds.  相似文献
