Abstract

Taieria erebus (Gnaphosidae) was found to be a versatile predator: it captured insects both cursorially (away from webs) and kleptopar-asitically (on alien webs); it captured spiders in both the presence and absence of webs; and it also ate the eggs of host spiders (oophagy). When T. erebus invaded webs, it was as an aggressive mimic — it performed a repertoire of vibratory behaviours to lure the host spider. Although T. erebus pursued and captured spiders on diverse web-types, it was more effective as a predator when invading densely (rather than sparsely) woven cribellate and non-sticky webs, and was especially effective on non-cribellate sticky webs. Gnaphosids are traditionally referred to as hunting spiders, but T. erebus built a small prey-capture web. T. erebus also preyed on segestriid spiders, then used their webs to catch more prey, this being an unusual example of a spider using, as a tool for predation, the spinning-work of another species from an unrelated family. T. erebus used specialised behaviours to prey on nesting cursorial spiders. Prey was either grasped or stabbed; the venom of T. erebus was highly potent against spiders. Experiments indicated that vision was of little or no importance in the predatory behaviour of T. erebus. The behaviour of T. erebus is compared to that of Portia, a web-building salticid spider which is very versatile in its predatory behaviour and has acute vision. T. erebus is discussed in relation to hypotheses concerning gnaphosid and salticid evolution.  相似文献

The systematic status of Priotrochus Fischer, 1879 and the taxonomy of its type species, Trochus obscurus Wood, 1828, are discussed. Although previously regarded as a subgenus of Monilea , observations on the radula and external anatomy reveal little similarity with Monilea and the Umboniinae as a whole. Greater similarity exists with members of the Monodontinae and a position, at generic level, in that subfamily is suggested. The extinct Trochus ponsonbyi Sowerby, 1888, is maintained as a subspecies of Priotrochus obscurus .  相似文献

The coloured patterns of the muricids may be divided in three main groups: (1) clear to dark uniform colour, (2) dark bands covering several spiral cords, (3) clear to dark cords contrasting with the main colour. The two last patterns, observed in Neogene muricids from the Western Atlantic region (USA), were unknown in Palaeogene species. In order to detect them in Palaeogene muricids, 35 species from 23 fossiliferous localities (Paris, Aquitaine and Loire-Atlantique basins) have been examined under Ultra-Violet light. On 1200 specimens, positive results have been obtained in two species (?Trophonopsis peregra (Beyrich, 1854), Rupelian and ?Paziella plini (de Raincourt, 1874), Middle Eocene). Both species bear the second type of pattern. In ?T. peregra (Auvers-St-Georges, Paris Basin), its occurrence is occasional. Conversely, in ?P. plini it is preserved from the Lutetian (Villiers-St-Frédéric, Paris basin) to the Bartonian (Bois-Gouët, Loire-Atlantique). The coloured bands seem similar in both species, but are probably not homologous. Effectively, the close analysis of the spiral sculpture shows that they differ by their place on the cords and even allows to reveal an intraspecific variation between the populations of ?P. plini.  相似文献

Three species of the arcto-boreal, large gastropod Neptunea , described by Linnaeus in 1758 and 1771, occur in large numbers over wide areas of the inshore North Atlantic and adjacent Arctic seas and are conspicuous among Pliocene and Pleistocene molluscs in the Icelandic, North Sea, and western Mediterranean basins. Selections of lectotypes for these species from shells in the collection of the Linnean Society of London, and designations of their type localities, establish the identity of Linnaeus' neptunes and more accurately determine their geographic and geologic distribution. The geographic range of Neptunea (Neptunea) antiqua (L.), the type species, now extends from southern Norway to the northern Biscay coast of France and from the westernmost Baltic Sea to southwestern Ireland; this species also occurs in Pliocene-Holocene marine deposits in West and East Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, England and France. Its type locality is determined to be the North Sea. N. (Neptunea) despecta (L.) lives in the eastern Canadian Arctic, off southern Greenland, the Barents Sea, and North Atlantic as far south as Massachusetts and Portugal; it also occurs in Pliocene-Holocene strata of eastern Canada, east-central Greenland, Norway (including Svalbard), the Soviet Union, Sweden and England. Its type locality is determined to be the postglacial deposits at Uddevalla in southwestern Sweden. N. (Sulcosipho) contraria (L.) now extends from the southern Biscay coast of France to Cape Spartel, Morocco; this species also occurs in Pleistocene and lower Holocene sequences of the western Mediterranean. Its type locality is determined to be Vigo Bay, Spain. A closely related fossil species, N. (S.) angulata (S. V. Wood), occurs in Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits of the North Sea basin.  相似文献

Abstract. The superfamily Cocculinoidea is a group of marine, deep-water, limpet-like gastropods. Recent speculation surrounding their affinities has concentrated on their placement within the Gastropoda. However, phylogenetic relationships within the Cocculinoidea, especially the monophyly of families and genera within the group, remain poorly understood. Phylogenetic analysis of 31 morphological characters for 15 cocculinoidean taxa and 2 outgroups resulted in a single most parsimonious tree, length=70, CI=0.62, and RI=0.71. Monophyly of the Cocculinoidea, Cocculinidae, and the genera Cocculina and Coccopigya was supported; Paracocculina and Coccocrater were found to be paraphyletic. Character optimization demonstrates that many characters often cited as diagnostic of various taxa, are often homoplastic and/or synapomorphies at different hierarchical levels.  相似文献

The systematics of topshells (family Trochidae) is currently unresolved: at present even the generic boundaries within this group are poorly defined. In this study, we used sequence data of two mitochondrial genes (16S and cytochrome oxidase 1, COI) and one nuclear gene (actin) to resolve the phylogeny of a closely related subgroup of the Trochidae, 30 species of largely Southern Hemisphere monodontine topshells. The phylogenies constructed revealed five well-supported generic clades: a South African clade (genus Oxystele Philippi, 1847), which lay basally to four internal Pacific clades (genera Chlorodiloma Pilsbry, 1889; Monodonta Lamarck, 1799; Austrocochlea Fischer, 1885; and Diloma Philippi, 1845). The molecular phylogenies constructed in this study shed light on previously unresolved relationships between different groups of topshells, allowing for the first time assignation (based on DNA sequence) of clearly defined, well-supported taxonomic and nomenclatural classification of monodontine topshells species. Austrocochlea crinita (Philippi, 1849), A. odontis (Wood, 1828), A. adelaidae (Philippi, 1849), and A. millelineata (Bonnet, 1864) are placed in the genus Chlorodiloma, which we resurrect from synonymy with Austrocochlea. The Japanese M. confusa Tapparone-Canefri, 1874 is treated as a separate species from M. labio (Linné, 1758). Melagraphia Gray, 1847 is synonymised with Diloma and its sole member, M. aethiops (Gmelin, 1791), along with A. concamerata (Wood, 1828), is transferred to that genus. The Juan Fernandez endemic D. crusoeana (Pilsbry, 1889) is synonymised with D. nigerrima (Gmelin, 1791). We find that morphologically cryptic species are not necessarily close genetically.  相似文献

Differences in shell morphology in the intertidal prosobranchmollusc Calliostoma zizyphinum were studied from a number ofsites within four geographical regions of the British Isleswith varying exposures to wave action and crab predation. Meanvalues of damage scarring were highest in shells sampled fromStrangford Lough, Northern Ireland, and lowest in individualsfrom the Atlantic Coast. Shells collected from the Isle of Manwere smaller than those from either the Atlantic coast of Irelandor Strangford Lough. Shells from Strangford Lough had tallershells (higher aspect ratio) than shells from the County Downand Atlantic Coast and shells from the County Down coast weremore squat (lower aspect ratio) than those from all other areas.Shells from Strangford Lough were significantly thinner thanshells from all other geographical areas. The relationshipsbetween shell damage scarring and shell size and tallness werenot consistent among areas. Shells from Strangford Lough arenotable in showing a steep, positive relationship between shellsize and scarring and a steep, negative relationship betweenscarring and tallness. The unusual shell phenotypes observedin shells from Strangford Lough may be explained by rapid shellgrowth, which would not only allow Calliostoma to attain a sizerefuge from crab predators but also to recover successfullyfrom repeated crab attacks on the shell lip. Summary The organization of Addisonia lateralis (Requien, 1848) and A. brophyi McLean, 1985 is described. Addisonia species have a thin, asymmetrical, cup-like shell and a very simple shell muscle. Eyes, oral lappets and epipodial tentacles are absent and the right cephalic tentacle is also used as a copulatory organ. Most characteristic is the enormously developed gill which is enlarged into the right subpallial cavity. It is composed of about 30 leaflets with skeletal rods and its epithelia are uniquely arranged. The heart is large and the single auricle is situated anteriorly left. There are two kidneys: the left is small, while the right forms large coelomic cavities and has no connection with the pericardium or the hermaphroditic genital system. Testis and ovary are separate: both have a simple duct proper (vas deferens, oviduct). They are connected to the copulatory organ by an open seminal groove; a small receptaculum is present. The mouth opening is typically triangular, with no jaws or subradular sense organs. Addisonia possesses tuft-like salivary glands, a radula diverticulum and distinct, tubular oesophageal glands. The oesophagus itself is simple. The radula and the posterior alimentary tract are unique; the stomach is completely reduced and the intestine forms a pseudostomach. The streptoneurous, hyoathroid nervous system has pedal cords with three commissures. The visceral loop is also cord-like. A single (left) osphradium is present and the small statocysts have several statocones.The peculiarities and unique combination of primitive and advanced characters in Addisonia reflect a highly enigmatic organization among the Archaeogastropoda. Possible relationships to other archaeogastropod groups are discussed.  相似文献

Aim The phylogeny of the enid land-snail genus Pachnodus was determined in order to provide information on biogeographical patterns within the granitic Seychelles islands. Location The genus Pachnodus is endemic to the granitic islands of Seychelles (Mahé, Silhouette, Praslin, La Digue and Fregate). Methods Phylogeny was determined using a cladistic analysis of nineteen shell and soft-body anatomy characters. The outgroup used was the central-east African genus Cerastus. Results The proposed phylogeny indicates that the genus divided into two distinct subgenera early in its history. Subsequent speciation occurred in parallel in the two subgenera, resulting in several islands supporting at least two distinct species representing the two subgenera. Main conclusions The pattern of speciation is largely explicable by vicariance as a result of sea-level rises, followed by habitat specialisation and further speciation. The pattern is in contrast to previously published scenarios for other taxa in the islands and indicates significant differences between evolutionary and habitat factors in the biogeography of the Seychelles fauna  相似文献

The gastropod family Trochidae from the Sarmatian deposits of the Eastern Paratethys is described in detail. Detailed faunal characteristics of 22 Sarmatian sections in Volyn–Podolia, Moldova, southern Ukraine, and Crimea, some of which have yielded the material of this study, are provided. Based on the study of an extensive collection of Trochidae, the family system is revised. The taxonomic composition of four Trochidae assemblages from Lower and Middle Sarmatian deposits is provided. These assemblages can be used for stratification of the Lower Sarmatian Kuzhorskie and Zbruchskie beds and Middle Sarmatian Novomoskovskie and Dnepropetrovskie–Vasilevskie beds. The results of the biogeographical study of Trochidae development in the Sarmatian basin of the Paratethys are provided. The data obtained on the evolution of Trochidae can be used for resolution of the paleoecological, biogeographical, and biostratigraphic questions.  相似文献

The literature on haliotids generally assumes that these organisms have a short pelagic larval life with dispersal powers limited only by the time available before settlement. The results of an experiment designed to test this assumption are presented. The density of mature Haliotis rubra Leach was experimentally decreased along a 90 m section of shoreline. The resulting effect on recruitment patterns was examined in comparison with previous recruitment patterns. The results indicate that haliotid larvae may be strongly benthic with limited patterns of dispersal.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetics of Caenogastropoda (Gastropoda: Mollusca)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Caenogastropoda is the dominant group of marine gastropods in terms of species numbers, diversity of habit and habitat and ecological importance. This paper reports the first comprehensive multi-gene phylogenetic study of the group. Data were collected from up to six genes comprising parts of 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA (five segments), 12S rRNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, histone H3 and elongation factor 1alpha. The alignment has a combined length of 3995 base positions for 36 taxa, comprising 29 Caenogastropoda representing all of its major lineages and seven outgroups. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses were conducted. The results generally support monophyly of Caenogastropoda and Hypsogastropoda (Caenogastropoda excepting Architaenioglossa, Cerithioidea and Campanilioidea). Within Hypsogastropoda, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses identified a near basal clade of nine or 10 families lacking an anterior inhalant siphon, and Cerithiopsidae s.l. (representing Triphoroidea), where the siphon is probably derived independently from other Hypsogastropoda. The asiphonate family Eatoniellidae was usually included in the clade but was removed in one Bayesian analysis. Of the two other studied families lacking a siphon, the limpet-shaped Calyptraeidae was associated with this group in some analyses, but the tent-shaped Xenophoridae was generally associated with the siphonate Strombidae. The other studied hypsogastropods with an anterior inhalant siphon include nine families, six of which are Neogastropoda, the only traditional caenogastropod group above the superfamily-level with strong morphological support. The hypotheses that Neogastropoda are monophyletic and that the group occupies a derived position within Hypsogastropoda are both contradicted, but weakly, by the molecular analyses. Despite the addition of large amounts of new molecular data, many caenogastropod lineages remain poorly resolved or unresolved in the present analyses, possibly due to a rapid radiation of the Hypsogastropoda following the Permian-Triassic extinction during the early Mesozoic.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The genus Tripidofusus n. gen. is proposed to include Tropidofusus ypotethys n. sp. from bathyal depths off New Zealand, as well as Fulgurofusus aequilonius and Columbarium benthocallis from the abyssal zones of the Bering Sea and Scotia Sea, respectively. Tropidofusus can be distinguished from both Fulgurofusus and Coluzea on the basis of its lower spire, prominent peripheral keel, long, thin siphonal canal, as well as in having a much thinner shell that lacks axial sculpture. The type species, Tropidofusus ypotethys n. sp., differs from its congeners in having a broader peripheral keel, smaller aperture and longer siphonal canal, as well as by inhabiting bathyal rather than abyssal depths. The genus is reviewed and the relationships of Tropidofusus to other supraspecific taxa within Columbariidae are discussed, as are relationships among the families within Turbinelloidea.

L. africana and L. knysnaensis are regarded as two morphs of a single species which exhibits a genetic cline along the south-eastern coast of southern Africa. The dark brown morph knysnaensis dominates the western, cooler end of the cline and is replaced by the pale blue morph africana at the warmer end of the cline. These conclusions are based on evidence from the latitudinal distributions, the complete range of intermediate forms regarding shell colour and shell morphology and the lack of differences in redular morphology, penial morphology or habitat.  相似文献

The extended proboscis of the toxoglossan gastropod Conus may exceed four times its contracted length and 1.5 times the shell length. The proboscis wall consists of cuboidal epidermis and circular, crossed helical and longitudinal muscle layers. Between the proboscis wall and its lumen, free longitudinal muscles and nerves course through haemocoel. A thick layer of connective tissue and columnar epithelium surround the proboscis lumen. In C. Catus , muscle comprises about 70% of the volume of the proboscis (exclusive of its lumen) and haemocoel about 20%, in both moderately extended and contracted states. Differentiation along the length of the proboscis includes gradual replacement of muscle by connective tissue distally in the proboscis wall, and a subapical sphincter muscle that probably prevents back-slippage of the detached radular tooth prior to its use in feeding and aids injection of the tooth into the prey during capture.  相似文献
