The long-term foetal surveillance is often to be recommended. Hence, the fully non-invasive acoustic recording, through maternal abdomen, represents a valuable alternative to the ultrasonic cardiotocography. Unfortunately, the recorded heart sound signal is heavily loaded by noise, thus the determination of the foetal heart rate raises serious signal processing issues. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for foetal heart rate estimation from foetal phonocardiographic recordings. A filtering is employed as a first step of the algorithm to reduce the background noise. A block for first heart sounds enhancing is then used to further reduce other components of foetal heart sound signals. A complex logic block, guided by a number of rules concerning foetal heart beat regularity, is proposed as a successive block, for the detection of most probable first heart sounds from several candidates. A final block is used for exact first heart sound timing and in turn foetal heart rate estimation. Filtering and enhancing blocks are actually implemented by means of different techniques, so that different processing paths are proposed. Furthermore, a reliability index is introduced to quantify the consistency of the estimated foetal heart rate and, based on statistic parameters; [,] a software quality index is designed to indicate the most reliable analysis procedure (that is, combining the best processing path and the most accurate time mark of the first heart sound, provides the lowest estimation errors). The algorithm performances have been tested on phonocardiographic signals recorded in a local gynaecology private practice from a sample group of about 50 pregnant women. Phonocardiographic signals have been recorded simultaneously to ultrasonic cardiotocographic signals in order to compare the two foetal heart rate series (the one estimated by our algorithm and the other provided by cardiotocographic device). Our results show that the proposed algorithm, in particular some analysis procedures, provides reliable foetal heart rate signals, very close to the reference cardiotocographic recordings.  相似文献

Evolution of mammalian reproductive success has witnessed a strong dependence on maternal resources through placental in utero development. Genomic imprinting, which has an active role in mammalian viviparity, also reveals a biased role for matrilineal DNA in its regulation. The co-existence of three matrilineal generations as one (mother, foetus and post-meiotic oocytes) has provided a maternal niche for transgenerational co-adaptive selection pressures to operate. In utero foetal growth has required increased maternal feeding in advance of foetal energetic demands; the mammary glands are primed for milk production in advance of birth, while the maternal hypothalamus is hormonally primed by the foetal placenta for nest building and post-natal care. Such biological forward planning resulted from maternal–foetal co-adaptation facilitated by co-expression of the same imprinted allele in the developing hypothalamus and placenta. This co-expression is concurrent with the placenta interacting with the adult maternal hypothalamus thereby providing a transgenerational template on which selection pressures may operate ensuring optimal maternalism in this and the next generation. Invasive placentation has further required the maternal immune system to adapt and positively respond to the foetal allotype. Pivotal to these mammalian evolutionary developments, genomic imprinting emerged as a monoallelic gene dosage regulatory mechanism of tightly interconnected gene networks providing developmental genetic stability for in utero development.  相似文献

Many studies have revealed the significant influence of the social nature and ecological niche of a species on the design and complexity of their communication sounds. The knowledge of communication sounds and particularly of the flexibility in their use among mammals, however, remains patchy. Being highly vocal and social, bats are well suited for investigating vocal plasticity as well as vocal diversity. Thus, the overall aim of this study was to test the presence of structural overlap between calls used in social communication and echolocation pulses emitted during foraging in greater tube-nosed bats (Murina leucogaster). Acoustic analysis and spectrotemporal decomposition of calls revealed a rich communication repertoire comprising 12 simple syllables and 5 composites with harmonics in the ultrasonic range. Simultaneous recording of vocal and social behavior in the same species yielded a strong correspondence between distinct behaviors and specific call types in support of Morton's motivation-structure hypothesis. Spectrographic analysis of call types also revealed the presence of modified components of echolocation pulses embedded within social calls. Altogether, the data suggest that bats can parse complex sounds into structurally simpler components that are recombined within behaviorally meaningful and multifunctional contexts.  相似文献

Plants perceive sounds, while responses to these sounds were already known. A breakthrough is the discovery by Khait et al. that stressed plants emit various informative ultrasonic sound signals, which can be categorized according to plant species, stress type, and stress severity. This discovery may change how plants are cultivated.  相似文献

The development of the enzymes monoamine oxidase and catechol O-methyl transferase in rabbit foetuses was studied. The adrenocortical system of the rabbit foetuses was inactivated by hypophysectomy on the 18th day of foetal age. The hypophysectomy of the foetuses by decapitation in utero resulted in marked increases in the activities of the enzymes monoamine oxidase and catechol O-methyl transferase in most of the body organs determined 12 days after the operation. A single administration of adrenocorticotropic hormone or hydrocortisone to the decapitated foetuses reduced the activities of both the enzymes studied in most of the body organs. The results suggest that glucocorticoids present in the circulation of foetal animals act as inhibitory factor for enzymes of catecholamine degradation. The inactivation of glucocorticoidogenesis by removal of the hypophysis takes away this rate-limiting control and highly significant increases in the activities of the enyzmes monoamine oxidase and catechol O-methyl transferase occur.  相似文献

BIOCHEMICAL analysis of in vivo RNA metabolism in the rat foetus has been hindered by inability to adequately label foetal RNA1–5. In contrast, in vitro studies of RNA metabolism in mammalian blastocysts have not been hampered by this restriction as uptake of isotopic uridine is adequate6–8. The inability of the foetus to incorporate labelled uridine administered to the mother may be due to dependence on the maternal circulation and placental transport. Our experiments show that rat foetal and maternal RNA can be labelled to yield a high specific activity RNA by administering 3H-cytidine to the pregnant animal. Moreover, they indicate that placental transport is not the limiting factor in the use of labelled uridine as a precursor for foetal RNA. Although labelled cytidine has been reported to cross the rat placenta in later stages of pregnancy3, its value in labelling foetal RNA has not been demonstrated previously.  相似文献

The practical application of foetal blood sampling in the routine management of patients in labour has been reviewed in a six-month survey, during which time 1,668 patients were delivered at Queen Charlotte''s Hospital.Foetal acidaemia (pH 7·25 or less) occurred in 45 of the 295 patients who showed clinical signs of foetal distress. Foetal tachycardia was the presenting sign in 33 of these 45 patients, underlining the importance of this physical sign. Foetal acidaemia in association with clinical foetal distress occurred twice as often in patients who had complications of pregnancy and who were therefore regarded as obstetrically “at risk” as it did in patients who were obstetrically “normal” No cases of acidaemia were detected in any of the foetal blood samples performed routinely on “at-risk” patients in the absence of clinical foetal distress.  相似文献

The effectiveness of 6 chemicals (benzo[a]pyrene), (BaP), cyclophosphamide (CP), diethylnitrosamine (DEN), methyl methanesulphonate (MMS), mitomycin C (MC) and procarbazine (PC) as inducers of micronuclei in foetal liver and maternal bone marrow erythooblasts has been determined, and related to that of γ-radiation. CP DEN, MMS and PC were all more effective in the foetal liver. The induction of micronuclei and SCEs by each chemical in foetal erythroblasts after in vivoexposure was measured. When expressed as induction of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) per erythroblast/induction of micronuclei per erythroblast (/μM/kg), the ratios obtained were MC 580, BaP 470, DEN 430, CP 258, MMS 140 and PC 13. The lowest doses detected as potentially genotoxic by each test in foetal liver erythroblasts are (with the exception of PC which is a relatively ineffective inducer of SCEs) similar. When isolated foetal livers were exposed in vitro, SCE dose responses to BaP, MC, MMS and PC could be directly related to those from in vivo exposure, indicating the role of the foetal liver in metabolic activation, but CP was considerably more cytotoxic. The transplacental micronucleus test, and in vivo/in vitro method for SCEs in foetal liver erythroblasts, provide sensitive, complementary assays for genotoxic effects of chemicals during prenatal life. Since foetal liver possesses greater metabolic potential than adult bone marrow, the transplacental test respond to genotoxic agents not detected by bone-marrow systems.  相似文献

Due to the risks to the foetus with invasive prenatal diagnosis, non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) is gaining tremendous interest but no reliable method that can be widely used has been developed to date. Manipulation of foetal cells and foetal cell-free genetic material in the maternal blood are two promising approaches being researched. The manipulation of foetal cells in the maternal circulation is more popular as it can provide complete genetic information of the foetus particularly the diagnosis of aneuploidies. However, the foetal cell numbers in the maternal circulation are small and their enrichment and ex vivo culture remain two major challenges for NIPD. Primitive foetal erythroblasts (pFEs) have been considered as a good potential candidate for early first trimester NIPD but their nature, properties and manipulation to provide adequate cell numbers remain a challenging task and several approaches need to be meticulously evaluated. In this review we describe the current status of NIPD and suggest some novel approaches in manipulating pFEs for future clinical application of NIPD. These novel approaches include (1) understanding the pFE enucleation process, (2) enriching pFE numbers by individual pick-up of pFEs from maternal blood using micromanipulation and microdroplet culture, (3) expansion of pFEs using mitogens and (4) decondensation of the pFE nucleus with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors followed by reprogramming using gene delivery protocols with/without small reprogramming molecules to improve reprogrammed pFE proliferation rates for successful NIPD.  相似文献

Bats and moths have been engaged in aerial warfare for nearly 65 Myr. This arms race has produced a suite of counter-adaptations in moths, including bat-detecting ears. One set of defensive strategies involves the active production of sound; tiger moths'' ultrasonic replies to bat attack have been shown to startle bats, warn the predators of bad taste and jam their biosonar. Here, we report that hawkmoths in the Choerocampina produce entirely ultrasonic sounds in response to tactile stimulation and the playback of biosonar attack sequences. Males do so by grating modified scraper scales on the outer surface of the genital valves against the inner margin of the last abdominal tergum. Preliminary data indicate that females also produce ultrasound to touch and playback of echolocation attack, but they do so with an entirely different mechanism. The anti-bat function of these sounds is unknown but might include startling, cross-family acoustic mimicry, warning of unprofitability or physical defence and/or jamming of echolocation. Hawkmoths present a novel and tractable system to study both the function and evolution of anti-bat defences.  相似文献

Differential centrifugation was applied to adult and foetal liver of monkey. Obtained fractions were: F1 (800 × g); F2 (12 500 × g); F3 (200 000 × g); and cell sap. Analysis of chemical compounds of these fractions shows that: (1) adult and foetal nucleic acids levels are similar; (2) there are more proteins in adult than in foetal hepatocytes; (3) most of the glycogen is located in F3; the foetal level is twenty times higher than the adult level.Plasma membrane enzymes (5′-nucleotidase, adenylate cyclase) show a nucleomicrosomic distribution. The distribution of alkaline phosphatase is not significant.Mitochondrial enzymes (monoamine oxydase, succinate cytochrome c reductase, cytochrome oxydase) are enriched in F2 without any sedimentation in F3 There is more malate dehydrogenase liberated in cell sap during foetal liver fractionation. This indicates the foetal mitochondria are more sensitive to the homogenisation method.Lysosomal enzymes (acid phosphatase, N-acetylglucosaminidase) are enriched in F2. The same observation for N-acetylglucosaminidase as for malate dehydrogenase leads to the same conclusion for foetal lysosomes.Endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi enzymes (glucose-6-phosphatase and related phosphotransferase activity, NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and sialyltransferase) are much enriched in F3. Thus this fraction F3 is pure enough to allow the observation of the modification produced on endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus during foetal and neonatal development.  相似文献

The key role of the foetal germ cell line in the reproductive capacity of the adult has been known for a long time. More recently, the observed increase in male reproductive disorders such as the decline of sperm count and quality and the increased incidence of testicular cancer has been postulated to be due to alterations of foetal and neonatal testicular development in response to increasing environmental pollution. However, few tools are available to study foetal and neonatal germ cell line development and the effects of physiological or toxic substances on this process. The authors have developed an organ culture system in which foetal or neonatal testis is grown on a filter floating on a synthetic medium free of serum, hormones or biological factors. This study, using rats and mice, first compared the long-term morphological and functional development of Sertoli and germ cells in thisin vivo system. In rats, these cells developed normally over a period of two weeksin vitro. Fewer cells were produced thanin vivo, but a similar level of differentiated function was observed. Germ cells, which are difficult to maintainin vitro, resumed mitosis after a quiescent period, at the same time asin vivo. Similar results were obtained with mouse fetuses, but this model was less efficient. This culture model can be used to study post-natal development of the germ cell lineage in testes derived from foetuses on the last day of foetal life and invalidated for P63, that do not survive after birth. This gene was found to be involved in the regulation of germ apoptosis which resumes after birth in the mouse. Lastly, this model applied to the human species (from 6 to 12 weeks of gestation) showed that testicular architecture and germ cells can be maintained for 4 days with better efficiency at younger stages than at older stages. p]In conclusion, testicular architecture and intercellular communications are sufficiently preserved to sustain gametogenesisin vitro with no added factors. This method is potentially useful to study the effects of various factors, particularly xenobiotics.  相似文献

Hector's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus hectori) have a simple vocal repertoire, consisting almost entirely of ultrasonic clicks. They produce no whistles, and very few audible sounds. To examine acoustic communication in this species I analysed the relationship between click types and behaviour. The proportion of complex click types was greater in large groups, suggesting that these sounds have social significance. Clicks having 2 peaks in their time envelope and two frequency peaks were strongly associated with behaviours indicative of feeding. High pulse rate sounds, in which the repetition rate of ultrasonic clicks was audible as a “cry”, were most strongly associated with aerial behaviours. These data suggest that echo-location is not the sole function of Hector's dolphin clicks, and that echo-location and communication are likely to be closely linked. I hypothesize that dolphins may have the ability to gather information from the echoes of each other's sonar pulses. This may reduce the need for a large number of vocal signals, and may explain the apparent simplicity of the acoustic repertoires of some odontocetes.  相似文献

The presence of a variety of embryonic and foetal gene products in neoplasms is well documented. Two such products, i.e. carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha foetoprotein, are currently being used for clinical diagnosis and the assessment of prognosis. The purpose of this study has been to examine the possibility of the reactivation of a foetal gene associated with foetal liver in the Morris 5123C hepatoma and host liver after prolonged tumour bearing. The foetal gene for globin was chosen for study as production of foetal globin in cancer patients has been observed and the technique for quantiation of globin messenger RNA is available. The quantitation of globin mRNA permits the identification of a gene product which is not related to the tissue of origin of the tumor being studied and which is influenced by pre-translational control mechanisms only. The influence of tumour bearing on foetal globin gene expression by the host liver is also reported. We report molecular hybridization studies of total nucleic acid extracts from foetal, 2-day neonatal, adult and host liver and the Morris 5123C transplantable hepatoma with a complementary DNA copy of globin messenger RNA. The results indicate that there is no activation of the foetal globin gene in these tissues in spite of erythrocytosis in the host animal.  相似文献

We report a series of experiments about a little-studied type of compatibility effect between a stimulus and a response: the priming of manual gestures via sounds associated with these gestures. The goal was to investigate the plasticity of the gesture-sound associations mediating this type of priming. Five experiments used a primed choice-reaction task. Participants were cued by a stimulus to perform response gestures that produced response sounds; those sounds were also used as primes before the response cues. We compared arbitrary associations between gestures and sounds (key lifts and pure tones) created during the experiment (i.e. no pre-existing knowledge) with ecological associations corresponding to the structure of the world (tapping gestures and sounds, scraping gestures and sounds) learned through the entire life of the participant (thus existing prior to the experiment). Two results were found. First, the priming effect exists for ecological as well as arbitrary associations between gestures and sounds. Second, the priming effect is greatly reduced for ecologically existing associations and is eliminated for arbitrary associations when the response gesture stops producing the associated sounds. These results provide evidence that auditory-motor priming is mainly created by rapid learning of the association between sounds and the gestures that produce them. Auditory-motor priming is therefore mediated by short-term associations between gestures and sounds that can be readily reconfigured regardless of prior knowledge.  相似文献

Many laboratory animals are known to be sensitive to sounds (ultrasounds) beyond the nominal upper limit (20 kHz) of the human hearing range. Sources of sound in laboratories and animal houses were examined to determine the extent of ambient ultrasound. Of 39 sources monitored, 24 were found to emit ultrasonic sounds. Many of these (e.g. cage washers and hoses) also produced sound in the audible range. Running taps, squeaky chairs and rotating glass stoppers created particularly high sound pressure levels and contained frequencies to over 100 kHz. The oscilloscopes and visual display units investigated provided particular cause for concern as they emitted sounds that were entirely ultrasonic and therefore were apparently silent. Ambient ultrasound therefore appears to be common in laboratories and animal houses. It is suggested that its effect on laboratory animals should be investigated and guidelines on acceptable levels be formulated.  相似文献

The frequency resolving power of hearing (FRP) of the beluga whale Delphinapterus leucas was studied as dependent on influence of lasting low-intensity sounds (of the ultrasonic range from –20 to +10 dB). Testing of the spectrum ripple-phase reversal was used in conjunction with a noninvasive recording of auditory evoked potentials. FRP parameters were found to depend nonmonotonically on the intensity of the background noise. The resultant adaptation effects can be explained by the fact that, in response to the high-intensity signals, the auditory system sensitivity is reduced to the level optimal for analysis of these signals.  相似文献

We propose a novel, two-degree of freedom mathematical model of mechanical vibrations of the heart that generates heart sounds in CircAdapt, a complete real-time model of the cardiovascular system. Heart sounds during rest, exercise, biventricular (BiVHF), left ventricular (LVHF) and right ventricular heart failure (RVHF) were simulated to examine model functionality in various conditions. Simulated and experimental heart sound components showed both qualitative and quantitative agreements in terms of heart sound morphology, frequency, and timing. Rate of left ventricular pressure (LV dp/dtmax) and first heart sound (S1) amplitude were proportional with exercise level. The relation of the second heart sound (S2) amplitude with exercise level was less significant. BiVHF resulted in amplitude reduction of S1. LVHF resulted in reverse splitting of S2 and an amplitude reduction of only the left-sided heart sound components, whereas RVHF resulted in a prolonged splitting of S2 and only a mild amplitude reduction of the right-sided heart sound components. In conclusion, our hemodynamics-driven mathematical model provides fast and realistic simulations of heart sounds under various conditions and may be helpful to find new indicators for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiac diseases.New & noteworthyTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first hemodynamic-based heart sound generation model embedded in a complete real-time computational model of the cardiovascular system. Simulated heart sounds are similar to experimental and clinical measurements, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our model can be used to investigate the relationships between heart sound acoustic features and hemodynamic factors/anatomical parameters.  相似文献

Bats and their insect prey rely on acoustic sensing in predator prey encounters—echolocation in bats, tympanic hearing in moths. Some insects also emit sounds for bat defense. Here, we describe a previously unknown sound-producing organ in Geometrid moths—a prothoracic tymbal in the orange beggar moth (Eubaphe unicolor) that generates bursts of ultrasonic clicks in response to tactile stimulation and playback of a bat echolocation attack sequence. Using scanning electron microscopy and high-speed videography, we demonstrate that E. unicolor and phylogenetically distant tiger moths have evolved serially homologous thoracic tymbal organs with fundamentally similar functional morphology, a striking example of convergent evolution. We compared E. unicolor clicks to that of five sympatric tiger moths and found that 9 of 13 E. unicolor clicking parameters were within the range of sympatric tiger moths. Remaining differences may result from the small size of the E. unicolor tymbal. Four of the five sympatric clicking tiger moth species were unpalatable to bats (0–20 % eaten), whereas E. unicolor was palatable to bats (86 % eaten). Based on these results, we hypothesize that E. unicolor evolved tymbal organs that mimic the sounds produced by toxic tiger moths when attacked by echolocating bats.  相似文献

Insects have evolved a variety of structures and mechanisms to produce sounds, which are used for communication both within and between species. Among acoustic insects, cicada males are particularly known for their loud and diverse sounds which function importantly in communication. The main method of sound production in cicadas is the tymbal mechanism, and a relative small number of cicada species possess both tymbal and stridulatory organs. However, cicadas of the genus Karenia do not have any specialized sound-producing structures, so they are referred to as “mute”. This denomination is quite misleading, as they indeed produce sounds. Here, we investigate the sound-producing mechanism and acoustic communication of the “mute” cicada, Karenia caelatata, and discover a new sound-production mechanism for cicadas: i.e., K. caelatata produces impact sounds by banging the forewing costa against the operculum. The temporal, frequency and amplitude characteristics of the impact sounds are described. Morphological studies and reflectance-based analyses reveal that the structures involved in sound production of K. caelatata (i.e., forewing, operculum, cruciform elevation, and wing-holding groove on scutellum) are all morphologically modified. Acoustic playback experiments and behavioral observations suggest that the impact sounds of K. caelatata are used in intraspecific communication and function as calling songs. The new sound-production mechanism expands our knowledge on the diversity of acoustic signaling behavior in cicadas and further underscores the need for more bioacoustic studies on cicadas which lack tymbal mechanism.  相似文献
