Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis and E. hexadactylus are two common frog species from south-east Asia. Both species have the remarkable ability to leap from a floating position out of the water. Rana esculenta is a European species from the same family that barely manages to do so. The species' morphology, however, looks roughly the same. We studied the unique abilities of the Euphlyctis species by videotaping the three species mentioned above whilst they jumped out of the water. These recordings enabled us to study the hind leg movements and to test several hypotheses. Differences between the species only became apparent when details of the behaviour were analysed. The three species mainly differed in their slip factor at the start of the propulsive phase, resulting in a difference in slip distance. This difference could be traced back to the difference in web shape by means of a physical model. The Euphlyctis species can prevent their feet from slipping because of their rounded and convex webbing, resulting in a larger take-off velocity and thereby a successful emergence out of the water.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 413–420.  相似文献

The oral apparatus of anuran tadpoles is a unique structure composed of soft and keratinized parts surrounding the mouth. Among the many variations, a common oral apparatus involves a dorsal gap in the marginal papillae, keratinized jaw sheaths, and two upper and three lower rows of labial teeth. In Leiuperidae, besides this generalized morphology, four configurations are distinguished by the arrangement of the lower marginal papillae and the number of lower tooth rows. Study of the early oral ontogeny in 12 species representing these five configurations shows variations in the development of the lower marginal papillae and the third lower labial tooth row. Similar configurations may result from similar pathways (e.g. Physalaemus cuvieri group and Pseudopaludicola falcipes) or different pathways (e.g. generalized oral discs of Pleurodema and Physalaemus). Different oral configurations may result from overlapping trajectories ending at different stages (e.g. Physalaemus riograndensis and Ph. biligonigerus) or different trajectories (e.g. Ph. henselii and Ph. gracilis). Further studies are needed to interpret the role that heterochrony has played in evolutionary change within this family. Most examples of intercontinental dispersal events after the Miocene contact between Africa and Asia involve mammal lineages. Among amphibians, a number of probably related groups are known from both continents, but their phylogenies are so far largely unresolved. To test the hypothesis of Miocene dispersal against a Mesozoic vicariance scenario in the context of Gondwana fragmentation, we analyzed fragments of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (572 bp) in 40 specimens of 34 species of the anuran family Ranidae. Results corroborated the monophyly of tiger frogs (genus Hoplobatrachus), a genus with representatives in Africa and Asia. The African H. occipitalis was the sister group of the Asian H. crassus, H. chinensis, and H. tigerinus. Hoplobatrachus was placed in a clade also containing the Asian genera Euphlyctis and Nannophrys. Combined analysis of sequences of 16S and 12S rRNA genes (total 903 bp) in a reduced set of taxa corroborated the monophyly of the lineage containing these three genera and identified the Asian genus Fejervarya as its possible sister group. The fact that the African H. occipitalis is nested within an otherwise exclusively Asian clade indicates its probable Oriental origin. Rough molecular clock estimates did not contradict the assumption that the dispersal event took place in the Miocene. Our data further identified a similar molecular divergence between closely related Asian and African species of Rana (belonging to the section Hylarana), indicating that Neogene intercontinental dispersal also may have taken place in this group and possibly in rhacophorid treefrogs.  相似文献

Lacustrine interbeds of a volcaniclastic succession that crops out extensively in north-western Patagonia yielded impressions of articulated, nearly complete, frogs of different ontogenetic stages including tadpoles. The stratigraphic position of the fossil bearing beds in this sequence and evaluation of palaeofloristic data against the record of climatic change in southern high latitudes support a middle Eocene – early Oligocene age for the frogs. These frogs are described as a new genus and species that resembles the late Palaeocene ' Xenopus' romeri from Brazil, and differs from the middle Eocene S. pascuali from Patagonia, in the relatively wide and short braincase and fused first two presacral vertebrae. However, unlike ' X. '  romeri , the nasals are paired and bear short, but distinct, rostral processes. A parsimony analysis based on 49 adult osteological characters demonstrates that these South American fossil pipids are closely related to xenopodines, restricted to the African continent today, although their interrelationships remain poorly resolved. Interpretation of the ontogenetic stages exemplified by the fossil specimens suggests a developmental pattern more similar to that of extant xenopodines than to the ontogeny of more distant pipoid relatives. Moreover, the similarity between these fossil larvae and those of Xenopus and Silurana strongly suggests similar habits. This paper provides data on the skeleton, musculature, buccal apparatus, buccopharyngeal cavity and diet of Ceratophrys cranwelli tadpoles, and attempts to contribute to the knowledge of relations between morphology and ecology in anuran larvae. Both in morphological characters and feeding habits, these tadpoles are very similar to other species within the genus. They possess many of the structural features usually found in predaceous tadpoles: strong, keratinized jaw sheaths and keratodonts, reduced buccal papillation, high values of in‐lever arm proportion and buccal floor area, well‐developed ceratohyals, and hypertrophied jaw muscles. Food sources consist of other tadpoles, microcrustaceans, larvae of insects, plant fragments, as well as rotifers and microalgae. As facultative carnivores, they are likely to play an important role in regulating the aquatic communities of the ephemeral ponds where they develop.  相似文献

The evolution of South American carnivorous marsupials, the borhyaenoids, has been investigated through the functional analysis of postcranial adaptive traits and palaeobiological data. There is evidence that the evolutionary history of Borhyaenoidea proceeded from a noncursorial ancestor. The locomotion and habits of the early Palaeocene Mayulestes ferox probably approached a generalized plesiomorphic pattern for marsupial locomotion, i.e. primarily terrestrial with secondary arboreal adaptations. An exceptionally rich early Miocene Patagonian fauna has yielded various morphological predator types, from scansorial ambusher to terrestrial, incipiently cursorial, taxa. The most specialized borhyaenoid was the powerful sabretooth Thylacosmilus atrox that survived until the late Pliocene. The evolution from a scansorial pattern towards a cursorial trend, illustrated by Borhyaena tuberata , and towards the probable development of postlactational parental care in Thylacosmilus , required by its dental specialization and killing strategy, suggests a modification of the selective pressures and predatory activities of the group over evolutionary time.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 140 , 487–521.  相似文献

Labial teeth of anuran tadpoles are keratinized structures derived from the activity of a single epidermal cell of the oral labia; they are not homologous with adult anuran teeth, nor with teeth of other vertebrates. The present study comprises a first approach for studying labial tooth shape variation that will be useful for future studies of comparative development and the functional mechanics of feeding structures. We examined interspecific shape variations in the labial teeth of anuran tadpoles and searched for correlations of these variations with ecomorphological guilds and phylogeny. Species ordination shows that important variations at various taxonomic levels are related mainly to the general curvature of the tooth axis, the angle between the labial tooth base and tip, head length and curvature, and sheath width. The teeth of most basal taxa are broad‐based and curved, although some broad‐based teeth also characterize some phthanobatrachian species. Teeth of hyloids and ranoids differ in the oral angle, overall curvature, and sheath width. A phylogenetically independent ecomorphological effect is significant only for lotic suctorial and gastromyzophorous guilds; teeth in these forms have short, thick and curved heads, wide sheaths, and generally acute oral angles. The lack of a significant correlation between labial tooth shape and trophic guilds suggests that labial tooth harvesting ability has a wide latitude that could be particularly functional only under specific circumstances. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 609–625.  相似文献

Recognising potential predators is critical for the survival and reproduction of prey animals. However, prey animals may possess an innate ability to recognise the signature odours (kairomones) of only certain native, sympatric predators, while requiring learning to recognise others. Our observations have shown that larval skipper frogs (Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis) fail to recognise kairomones of dragonfly nymph, a common predator of amphibian tadpoles with a cosmopolitan distribution. Hence, we wanted to determine if larval skipper frogs totally lack an innate mechanism to recognise kairomones of all aquatic predators, or have an innate ability to recognise kairomones of only certain predators. In a series of experiments, we tested the antipredator response of larval skipper frogs to kairomones of dragonfly nymph (Bradinopyga geminata); walking catfish (Clarias batrachus); Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus); two species of predatory tadpoles, Indian bullfrog (Hoplobatrachus tigerinus) and Jerdon’s bullfrog (Hoplobatrachus crassus); and the checkered keel back snake (Xenochrophis piscator). The results clearly indicate that larval skipper frogs have the innate ability to recognise kairomones of the walking catfish, both species of larval bullfrog and checkered keel back snake. However, they lack the innate ability to recognise kairomones of dragonfly nymph and Mozambique tilapia. Prey choice of the Mozambique tilapia and gape-limitation of dragonfly nymphs could be responsible for the lack of innate responses of larval skipper frogs to them. While developmental plasticity can facilitate evolutionary diversification of organisms,the effects of water levels as an environmental pressure on tiger frogs remains unclear.This study clarifies the relationship by studying the responses of tiger frog(Hoplobatrachus chinensis)tadpoles to simulated hydroperiods(i.e.,constant low water levels,constant high water levels,increasing water levels,decreasing water levels,rapid changes in water levels and gradual fluctuations in water levels)in a laboratory setting.ANOVA analysis showed that none of the water level treatments had any significant effect on the total length,body mass,or developmental stages of H.chinensis tadpoles half way through development(11 days old).Tadpoles raised in rapidly fluctuating water levels had protracted metamorphosis,whereas tadpoles raised under low and gradually fluctuating water levels had shortened metamorphosis.None of the water level treatments had a significant effect on the snout-vent length(SVL)or body mass of H.chinensis tadpoles at Gosner stage 42,or on the body mass of tadpoles at Gosner stage 45.However,the tadpoles raised in high levels and rapidly fluctuating water levels,significantly larger SVL at Gosner stage 45,while ones under gradually fluctuating water levels had smaller SVL than the other groups.Time to metamorphosis was positively correlated with body size(SVL)at metamorphosis in H.chinensis tadpoles.H.chinensis tadpoles under constant low water level had the highest mortality rate among all the treatments(G-test).Moreover,ANOVA and ACNOVA(with body length as the covariate)indicated that water levels had no significant effect on either the morphology(i.e.head length,head width,forelimb length,hindlimb length and body width)or the jumping ability of juvenile H.chinensis.These results suggest that the observed accelerated metamorphosis and high mortality of H.chinensis tadpoles under decreasing water level treatment was driven by density-induced physical interactions among increasing conspecifics.  相似文献

Tremiorchis is a monotypic genus of digenetic trematode (Plagiorchiidae: Plagiorchiinae), infecting the frogs Rana tigrina (Hoplobatrachus tigerinus) and R. cyanophlyctis (Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis). Metacercaria use to infect Rana tigrina (Hoplobatrachus tigerinus) and R. cyanophlyctis (Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis) as intermediate hosts, while the cercaria stage found from apple snail, Pila virens. Adults of T. ranarum harbor mature frogs of H. tigerinus and E. cyanophlyctis. Besides the frequent infection of Tremiorchis, no DNA sequence data are currently available for this monotypic genus. The present communication, deals with the sequence data for nuclear ribosomal genes, 18S, small internal transcribed spacers (ITS1–5.8S-ITS2) and 28S to molecularly characterize T. ranarum. Besides this, phylogenetic relationship among the members of the Plagiorchiida is also discussed in detail. An attempt has also been made to provide detailed molecular affinities of T. ranarum with other trematode genera.  相似文献

Braun and the closely related taxon I. longissimum Bory, together with Spanish material conventionally designated I. longissimum , suggests that the Spanish specimens constitute a new species, I. fluitans . This study aimed to identify potential factors responsible for geographically structured morphological variation within the widespread Australian frogs Limnodynastes tasmaniensis Günther and L. peronii Duméril & Bibron. There was support for James's rule, and both latitude and present climate explained large amounts of the variation in body size and shape (particularly in L. peronii ). There was also some support for the influence of several biogeographical barriers. Finally, both species were sexually dimorphic for body size and the degree of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) varied geographically. Climate was an important explanation for SSD variation in L. peronii , while latitude was most important for L. tasmaniensis . The small modern insect order Grylloblattida has an abundant fossil record during the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoicirca. The relationships between these fossil taxa and the modern grylloblattids remain unclear because most of them are based on isolated wings or have poorly preserved body features. Modern grylloblattids are wingless insects. The new grylloblattid family Plesioblattogryllidae fam. nov. is erected for the new genus and species Plesioblattogryllus magnificus gen. nov., sp. nov. , from the Middle Jurassic of north-eastern China. The well-preserved specimen provides further evidence that could support its close relationships with the modern grylloblattids: (1) several very similar head structures, e.g. developed laciniae with inner row of setae, maxillary palps segmented into five, labial palps segmented into three, large labrum, and morphology of antenna; (2) paired eoplantulae on tarsomeres 1–4; (3) long ovipositor and large eggs comparable with those of modern taxa. The new genus has strongly developed mandibles with sharp pointed apical teeth and strong marginal teeth, and strong hook-like fore claws with basal teeth, suggesting it was carnivorous. The major differences between the extinct and extant Grylloblattida, such as the lack of wings, the eyes and ocelli either degenerated or absent, and the thorax degenerated in the modern forms, are probably related to their adaptation to their life under rocks and rock-crawler habits.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 17–24.  相似文献

Successful fish feeding often requires the coordination of several complex motor and sensory systems to ensure that food is accurately detected, approached, acquired, and consumed. In the present study, we address feeding behaviour as a coordinated set of multiple, facultatively independent, anatomical systems. We sought to determine whether the patterns of interaction between trophic, locomotor, and oculomotor systems are associated with changes in morphology and ecology within a closely-related, but trophically divergent, group of fishes. We present a quantitative kinematic analysis of skull motion, locomotor behaviour, and oculomotor responses during feeding to assess coordination in three functional systems directly involved in feeding. We use coordination profiles to depict the feeding behaviours of three carnivorous coral reef fishes of the tribe Cheilinini in the family Labridae (the wrasses): Cheilinus fasciatus (a slow-swimming predator of benthic invertebrates), Epibulus insidiator (a slow-stalking predator with extraordinary jaw protrusion), and Oxycheilinus digrammus (a fast-attack predator). Differences were detected in several variables relating to jaw, body, fin, and eye movements. Overall patterns of coordination were more similar between E. insidiator and O. digrammus , which are capable of capturing elusive prey, than between C. fasciatus and E. insidiator , which are the two most closely-related species among the three. Evidence for the evolution of coordination patterns among cheiline fishes suggests that the sensory-motor systems involved in processing stimuli and coordinating a physical response during feeding have changed considerably, even among closely-related species.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 289–308.  相似文献

The taxonomic affinity of Halosphaeria cucullata to Halosphaeria is reassessed based on a recent collection of this fungus. Halosphaeria cucullata is characterized by immersed, darkly coloured ascomata, clavate asci which deliquesce very early in development, and cylindrical ascospores with or without a polar cap-like appendage at one end. In a phylogenetic analysis of the LSU rDNA sequences from members of the Halosphaeriaceae, H. cucullata did not form a monophyletic clade with H. appendiculata , the type species of the genus. These results suggest that H. cucullata should not be included in Halosphaeria . Viola muliensis Y.S. Chen & Q.E. Yang, a new species of Viola L. (Violaceae) from Sichuan, China, is described and illustrated. Viola muliensis is endemic to Muli County, south-western Sichuan. This new species has yellow flowers with very short spurs and belongs to subsection Brevicalcaratae W. Beck., section Dischidium Ging.
