In everyday life, humans and animals occupying different rungs of the “evolutionary ladder” often have to evaluate the notions of larger/smaller size (predator/prey, rival/ally, etc.) and flat/volumetric shape (fruit/leaf, 2D/3D images, etc.). The aim of this study was to find out experimentally which of the following two tasks related to the formation of the preverbal notions of larger/smaller size or flat/volumetric shape is easier to train rhesus monkeys. The first task was to form or actualize the notion of larger or smaller size upon co-presentation of 4 flat or volumetric figures. The second task was to form or actualize the notion of flat or volumetric object among 4 figures of the same size (small, medium or large) presented simultaneously. To be rewarded during the formation of both notions, the animal was supposed to choose a figure which was different from the other three in the trial. In both tasks, the number of trials required to reach or exceed the 70% level of correct task implementation per each type of training was counted. This allowed optimization of the notion formation algorithm to rule out strong skill consolidation (overtraining) that might inhibit the formation of a new skill in further training. When the number of trials was averaged over all types of training, the notion of shape formed faster than the notion of size. This discrepancy was only observed under the difficulty of solving one of the task types–discriminating between objects poorly distinguishable (1.5 times) by their size. However, in the situation of no difficulty in discriminating between figures during their perception (more than a 2-fold difference in size), the number of trials in forming the notions of size and shape was statistically indistinguishable. Since training rates in forming the notions of larger/smaller size or flat/volumetric shape were indistinguishable in simple choice situations, we suggest that these notions are equally important for rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

The recovery of visual disturbances provoked by partial neocortical deafferentation was studied in dogs with two sets of visual patterns: figures and differently oriented lines. The disturbances were more prominent, when the dogs had to solve the most complex visual tasks (6 stimuli showed to a dog simultaneously). There was a distinct recovery of figure recognition in the process of compensation, i. e. in 4--6 months after the neocortical deafferentation. On the contrary, recognition of oriented lines did not improve. Probably the differences between the two sorts of recognition mentioned above may be explained by various changes of their mechanisms' properties in the process of compensation.  相似文献

The processing of Kanizsa figures have classically been studied by flashing the full "pacmen" inducers at stimulus onset. A recent study, however, has shown that it is advantageous to present illusory figures in the "notch" mode of presentation, that is by leaving the round inducers on screen at all times and by removing the inward-oriented notches delineating the illusory figure at stimulus onset. Indeed, using the notch mode of presentation, novel P1 and N1 effects have been found when comparing visual potentials (VEPs) evoked by an illusory figure and the VEPs to a control figure whose onset corresponds to the removal of outward-oriented notches, which prevents their integration into one delineated form. In Experiment 1, we replicated these findings, the illusory figure was found to evoke a larger P1 and a smaller N1 than its control. In Experiment 2, real grey squares were placed over the notches so that one condition, that with inward-oriented notches, shows a large central grey square and the other condition, that with outward-oriented notches, shows four unconnected smaller grey squares. In response to these "real" figures, no P1 effect was found but a N1 effect comparable to the one obtained with illusory figures was observed. Taken together, these results suggest that the P1 effect observed with illusory figures is likely specific to the processing of the illusory features of the figures. Conversely, the fact that the N1 effect was also obtained with real figures indicates that this effect may be due to more global processes related to depth segmentation or surface/object perception.  相似文献

Investigation of perceptual rivalry between conflicting stimuli presented one to each eye can further understanding of the neural underpinnings of conscious visual perception. During rivalry, visual awareness fluctuates between perceptions of the two stimuli. Here, we demonstrate that high-level perceptual grouping can promote rivalry between stimulus pairs that would otherwise be perceived as nonrivalrous. Perceptual grouping was generated with point-light walker stimuli that simulate human motion, visible only as lights placed on the joints. Although such walking figures are unrecognizable when stationary, recognition judgments as complex as gender and identity can accurately be made from animated displays, demonstrating the efficiency with which our visual system can group dynamic local signals into a globally coherent walking figure. We find that point-light walker stimuli presented one to each eye and in different colors and configurations results in strong rivalry. However, rivalry is minimal when the two walkers are split between the eyes or both presented to one eye. This pattern of results suggests that processing animated walker figures promotes rivalry between signals from the two eyes rather than between higher-level representations of the walkers. This leads us to hypothesize that awareness during binocular rivalry involves the integrated activity of high-level perceptual mechanisms in conjunction with lower-level ocular suppression modulated via cortical feedback.  相似文献

To clarify the effects of respiration on left ventricular (LV) dimensions and shortening, we studied chronically instrumented dogs with endocardial sonomicrometer crystals in the anterior-posterior (AP), septal to lateral (SL), and long axes (LA) following pericardiectomy. Ten anesthetized dogs were examined during spontaneous unobstructed respiration, partial inspiratory obstruction (PIO), and Mueller maneuvers (MM). During unobstructed inspiration, end-diastolic dimensions (EDD) demonstrated a significant increase in the AP and a similar decrease in the SL axis (i.e., noncongruent shape changes). During PIO only the SL EDD diminished significantly, while no significant changes occurred in any EDD during MM. Individual dogs also demonstrated noncongruent shape changes at end systole during inspiration. However, the end-systolic dimensions for the entire group demonstrated a significant increase in one dimension during each inspiratory mode with no significant changes in the other two axes suggesting an increased ventricular volume. Regional shortening declined only in the SL axis during both unobstructed respiration and PIO. Spontaneous sighs with large tidal volumes, yet smaller changes in pleural pressure than during the MM, were associated with marked noncongruent shape changes in both diastole and systole. We conclude that 1) estimates of LV volumes during respiration based on only one or two axes and assuming regional congruent shape changes may be misleading; and 2) lung volume changes can affect LV geometry independently of changes in pleural pressure.  相似文献

The Republic of Haiti is one of only several countries in the Western Hemisphere in which canine rabies is still endemic. Estimation methods have predicted that 130 human deaths occur per year, yet existing surveillance mechanisms have detected few of these rabies cases. Likewise, canine rabies surveillance capacity has had only limited capacity, detecting only two rabid dogs per year, on average. In 2013, Haiti initiated a community-based animal rabies surveillance program comprised of two components: active community bite investigation and passive animal rabies investigation. From January 2013 –December 2014, 778 rabies suspect animals were reported for investigation. Rabies was laboratory-confirmed in 70 animals (9%) and an additional 36 cases were identified based on clinical diagnosis (5%), representing an 18-fold increase in reporting of rabid animals compared to the three years before the program was implemented. Dogs were the most frequent rabid animal (90%). Testing and observation ruled out rabies in 61% of animals investigated. A total of 639 bite victims were reported to the program and an additional 364 bite victims who had not sought medical care were identified during the course of investigations. Only 31% of people with likely rabies exposures had initiated rabies post-exposure prophylaxis prior to the investigation. Rabies is a neglected disease in-part due to a lack of surveillance and understanding about the burden. The surveillance methods employed by this program established a much higher burden of canine rabies in Haiti than previously recognized. The active, community-based bite investigations identified numerous additional rabies exposures and bite victims were referred for appropriate medical care, averting potential human rabies deaths. The use of community-based rabies surveillance programs such as HARSP should be considered in canine rabies endemic countries.  相似文献

Factors that lead to decreasing thresholds across repeated test sessions in Gollin incomplete figure test were investigated. In the first experiment, 4 tests with 5-day intervals and using same test figures, were conducted. Thresholds of recognition in each test and amplitude-frequency characteristics of test images were compared by correlation analysis. In the second investigation, 2 tests with 3-day intervals were conducted. In repeated tests, half figures were familiar to the subjects. In addition, half fragmented figures (both familiar an unfamiliar to the subjects) had such amplitude-frequency characteristics as in the first test. It was found that decreasing of thresholds was primary conditioned by optimization of mechanisms that work with statistical (not object) information.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) engage in highly complex forms of social learning. Here, we critically assess the potential mechanisms underlying social learning in dogs using two problem‐solving tasks. In a classical detour task, the test dogs benefited from observing a demonstrator walking around a fence to obtain a reward. However, even inexperienced dogs did not show a preference for passing the fence at the same end as the demonstrator. Furthermore, dogs did not need to observe a complete demonstration by a human demonstrator to pass the task. Instead, they were just as successful in solving the problem after seeing a partial demonstration by an object passing by at the end of the fence. In contrast to earlier findings, our results suggest that stimulus enhancement (or affordance learning) might be a powerful social learning mechanism used by dogs to solve such detour problems. In the second task, we examined whether naïve dogs copy actions to solve an instrumental problem. After controlling for stimulus enhancement and other forms of social influence (e.g. social facilitation and observational conditioning), we found that dogs’ problem solving was not influenced by witnessing a skilful demonstrator (either an unknown human, a conspecific or the dog’s owner). Together, these results add to evidence suggesting that social learning may often be explained by relatively simple (but powerful) mechanisms.  相似文献

Raw data on exopodite beating in the first three developmental stages of the lobster Homarus gammarus were collected and analysed for key beating parameters. The analysis was computer assisted and the main procedures used are described. Beating patterns are the same in all three stages and are usually very regular although perturbations do occur (figures 1, 2). When beating stops the deceleration and subsequent re-acceleration is very rapid (figure 1) and limb movement sequences usually start posteriorly and move forwards (figures 1, 2d). Ipsilateral phase relations are generally maintained at 0.4-0.6 (figures, 3,4) and while the coupling between adjacent exopodites is usually stronger than for those further apart various deviations from this are occasionally seen (figure 5). No significant correlation between the ipsilateral phase relations of adjacent exopodites and base cycle duration was detected for any of the stages (figure 6). Contralateral phase relations undergo a constant progression (figures 7, 9) and this was found to be due to a heterodyne effect (figure 8) also described as gliding coordination. The powerstroke/returnstroke ratio for all stages was approximately 0.5 (figure 10) and no significant correlation was found with cycle duration (figure 11). The only substantial difference between the three larval stages which was noted was that of cycle duration, the cycles of stage III being shorter than those of the first two stages. The exopodite beating pattern was discussed in context with other metachronously cycling systems in arthropods and the implications of the present study discussed.  相似文献

In the electron microscope, thin sections of OsO4-fixed myelin figures from the phospholipide fraction of human brain show a pattern of parallel dark lines with a repeating period of about 40 A. It is shown that the dark lines probably represent the reaction product of OsO4 with double bonds in the fatty acid chains, thereby marking the central portion of one bimolecular lamella. The addition of globin results in dense lines 25 to 50 A wide that cover the surface of the myelin figures. When such a figure consists of only two bimolecular leaflets of lipide covered with globin, the structure shows striking similarity to the image of cell membranes in fixed tissue sections. A hypothetical schema is given of the molecular structure of the figure, and the distribution of OsO4 in it.  相似文献

Preparations of surface stretched amembranous nuclei and mitotic figures were used for revealing the high order nuclear and chromosomal structures. The preparations were obtained by dropping amembraneous nuclei and mitotic figures suspension in methanol-glacial acetic acid mixture (3:1) on wetted superclean slides. Amembraneous nuclei and mitotic figures were isolated from intact murine and human cells (lines L1210, SK-UT-1B, PHA-stimulated lymphocytes) by means of their 1-5 min prefixational capillary pipetting with freshly prepared 0.018-0.06% Triton X-100 solution in the conditional cultural medium. Stretched amembraneous nuclei and mitotic figures had no features of induced chromatin dispersion and compaction. Stretched interphase amembraneous nuclei showed spatially separated individual structures (thin chromatin fibres, nucleoli, intranuclear bodies), polymorphous pattern of perinucleolar chromatin aggregation and episodically expressed beaded thick chromatin fibres and a chromocenter. The chromomeric pattern of the spread chromosomes of mitotic figures was quite similar but hardly identical with that of G-banding. The stretched prometaphase mitotic figures in all tested cell types always contained loose "residual" nucleoli looking like typical prophase nucleoli as concerns their shape and number per cell (mitotic figure). The majority of chromosomes of stretched mitotic figures and of prophase amembraneous nuclei were attached to the nucleolar material. All tested cell lines showed almost the same variation in number of nucleolus-attached chromosomes, per both prophase amembraneous nucleus and prometaphase mitotic figure. Some chromosomes of stretched mitotic figures were colocated with "residual" nucleoli and looked shortened and strongly condensed. Other chromosomes, locally associated with "residual" nucleoli, were straight and oriented radially to these. Mutual chromosomal arrangements in mitotic cells on smears and in stretched mitotic figures were analogous. Equatorial plates from PBS-washed SK-UT-1B cells displayed a better stretching capacity than those from untreated cells. In the former case metaphase chromosomes were seen more uniformly stretched and well identified after GTG-banding procedure. The number of interchromosomal (mainly telomere-telomeric and telomere-centromeric) connections per stretched mitotic figure (or per stretched prophase amembraneous nucleus) was minimum in late prometaphase, maximum in prophase and early prometaphase, and intermediate in metaphase. The obtained data are discussed in terms of topology and longitudinal heterogeneity of mitotic chromosomes.  相似文献

Summary Airborne pollen studies were carried out, by means of Burkard volumetric spore traps, at two different sites (the city of Stockholm and the suburb Huddinge) 15 km apart in the Stockholm region. Within the city of Stockholm the study was carried out in 1973–89 while in Huddinge the investigation period was 1977–82. In all the years under investigation the total pollen catch and the number of pollen types were higher in Stockholm than in Huddinge. The reason for this is not explained by the composition of the local vegetation surrounding the traps. It is concluded that parameters such as qualitative changes in the daily catches and occurrence during the main pollen season are more important than the absolute daily figures. The cyclic trends in the local annual sums over a long period of years do not show any periodicity that is altogether regular and reliable.  相似文献

Background

Figures are important experimental results that are typically reported in full-text bioscience articles. Bioscience researchers need to access figures to validate research facts and to formulate or to test novel research hypotheses. On the other hand, the sheer volume of bioscience literature has made it difficult to access figures. Therefore, we are developing an intelligent figure search engine (http://figuresearch.askhermes.org). Existing research in figure search treats each figure equally, but we introduce a novel concept of “figure ranking”: figures appearing in a full-text biomedical article can be ranked by their contribution to the knowledge discovery.

Methodology/Findings

We empirically validated the hypothesis of figure ranking with over 100 bioscience researchers, and then developed unsupervised natural language processing (NLP) approaches to automatically rank figures. Evaluating on a collection of 202 full-text articles in which authors have ranked the figures based on importance, our best system achieved a weighted error rate of 0.2, which is significantly better than several other baseline systems we explored. We further explored a user interfacing application in which we built novel user interfaces (UIs) incorporating figure ranking, allowing bioscience researchers to efficiently access important figures. Our evaluation results show that 92% of the bioscience researchers prefer as the top two choices the user interfaces in which the most important figures are enlarged. With our automatic figure ranking NLP system, bioscience researchers preferred the UIs in which the most important figures were predicted by our NLP system than the UIs in which the most important figures were randomly assigned. In addition, our results show that there was no statistical difference in bioscience researchers'' preference in the UIs generated by automatic figure ranking and UIs by human ranking annotation.

Conclusion/Significance

The evaluation results conclude that automatic figure ranking and user interfacing as we reported in this study can be fully implemented in online publishing. The novel user interface integrated with the automatic figure ranking system provides a more efficient and robust way to access scientific information in the biomedical domain, which will further enhance our existing figure search engine to better facilitate accessing figures of interest for bioscientists.  相似文献

Modelling transversely isotropic materials in finite strain problems is a complex task in biomechanics, and is usually addressed by using finite element (FE) simulations. The standard method developed to account for the quasi-incompressible nature of soft tissues is to decompose the strain energy function (SEF) into volumetric and deviatoric parts. However, this decomposition is only valid for fully incompressible materials, and its use for slightly compressible materials yields an unphysical response during the simulation of hydrostatic tension/compression of a transversely isotropic material. This paper presents the FE implementation as subroutines of a new volumetric model solving this deficiency in two FE codes: Abaqus and FEBio. This model also has the specificity of restoring the compatibility with small strain theory. The stress and elasticity tensors are first derived for a general SEF. This is followed by a successful convergence check using a particular SEF and a suite of single-element tests showing that this new model does not only correct the hydrostatic deficiency but may also affect stresses during shear tests (Poynting effect) and lateral stretches during uniaxial tests (Poisson's effect). These FE subroutines have numerous applications including the modelling of tendons, ligaments, heart tissue, etc. The biomechanics community should be aware of specificities of the standard model, and the new model should be used when accurate FE results are desired in the case of compressible materials.  相似文献

Abstract

A number of studies have examined factors associated with the relinquishment of pet dogs to animal welfare shelters. In Australia, however, there has been little investigation of new owners' experiences when they subsequently adopt one of these dogs. To address this, telephone interviews were conducted with 62 persons who had recently adopted a shelter dog in Melbourne, Australia. Data relating to adopter demographics, factors influencing the selection of a dog and problems experienced post-adoption were collected. Shelter dogs were primarily acquired to replace a deceased pet or as companions to humans or other dogs. Selection was influenced by the dog's size, general appearance and behavior, with adopters preferring dogs who behaved in a calm and friendly manner. Common problems reported during the initial post-adoptive period were hyperactivity/boisterousness, compatibility issues with an existing pet and pulling on the lead. Escaping was strongly associated with separation-related problems. Three-quarters of the sample walked their dogs daily for 30 minutes or more, with larger dogs exercised for longer. Most dogs were exercised off-lead for some period, particularly larger dogs. This study indicates that improving assessment and matching procedures, and providing in-house and post-adoptive training could increase rehoming success rates.  相似文献

The figures included in many of the biomedical publications play an important role in understanding the biological experiments and facts described within. Recent studies have shown that it is possible to integrate the information that is extracted from figures in classical document classification and retrieval tasks in order to improve their accuracy. One important observation about the figures included in biomedical publications is that they are often composed of multiple subfigures or panels, each describing different methodologies or results. The use of these multimodal figures is a common practice in bioscience, as experimental results are graphically validated via multiple methodologies or procedures. Thus, for a better use of multimodal figures in document classification or retrieval tasks, as well as for providing the evidence source for derived assertions, it is important to automatically segment multimodal figures into subfigures and panels. This is a challenging task, however, as different panels can contain similar objects (i.e., barcharts and linecharts) with multiple layouts. Also, certain types of biomedical figures are text-heavy (e.g., DNA sequences and protein sequences images) and they differ from traditional images. As a result, classical image segmentation techniques based on low-level image features, such as edges or color, are not directly applicable to robustly partition multimodal figures into single modal panels.In this paper, we describe a robust solution for automatically identifying and segmenting unimodal panels from a multimodal figure. Our framework starts by robustly harvesting figure-caption pairs from biomedical articles. We base our approach on the observation that the document layout can be used to identify encoded figures and figure boundaries within PDF files. Taking into consideration the document layout allows us to correctly extract figures from the PDF document and associate their corresponding caption. We combine pixel-level representations of the extracted images with information gathered from their corresponding captions to estimate the number of panels in the figure. Thus, our approach simultaneously identifies the number of panels and the layout of figures.In order to evaluate the approach described here, we applied our system on documents containing protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and compared the results against a gold standard that was annotated by biologists. Experimental results showed that our automatic figure segmentation approach surpasses pure caption-based and image-based approaches, achieving a 96.64% accuracy. To allow for efficient retrieval of information, as well as to provide the basis for integration into document classification and retrieval systems among other, we further developed a web-based interface that lets users easily retrieve panels containing the terms specified in the user queries.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Turning to someone in times of emotional distress (safe haven) is one key feature of an attachment bond. Aspects of pet dogs as sources of safe haven were examined with open-ended methods for two samples of young adults who were college students (total n = 566, mean age = 19.24 years). Based on ranked nominations, relative to other features of pet dogs as attachment figures, safe haven was the least salient. Nonetheless, although participants were less likely to turn to pet dogs than to mothers, friends, and romantic partners in times of distress, they were more likely to turn to pets than to fathers and brothers and just as likely to turn to sisters. Differences between pet dogs and some humans as sources of safe haven were smallest for participants with high levels of involvement in the care of their dogs and participants who regarded their dogs as strongly meeting needs for relatedness. It is concluded that characteristics of both the dog and the owner predispose young adults to regard their dogs as a source of safe haven and serve as one basis for establishing attachment bonds with them.  相似文献

A complex discrimination procedure was used to test class formation with multi-component figures in college students. First, selections of a red-+45 degrees -oriented rectangle (A1B1) instead of a red -45 degrees -oriented rectangle (A1B2) and of a green -45 degrees -oriented rectangle (A2B2) instead of a green-+45 degrees -oriented rectangle (A2B1), were reinforced. Second, selections of a +45 degrees -obtuse-angle-white hexagon (B1C1), instead of a +45 degrees -two-acute-angle hexagon (B1C2) and of a -45 degrees -two-acute-angle hexagon (B2C2), instead of a -45 degrees -obtuse-angle hexagon (B2C1), were reinforced. Subsequent tests with figures A1B1 and A2B1, A2B2 and A1B2, B1C1 and B2C1, and B2C2 and B1C2 demonstrated selection of the same figures as in training. Other tests with a novel figure compounded by color A1 and form C1 and a novel figure compounded by color A1 and form C2, or a novel figure compounded by A2 and C1 and a novel figure compounded by A2 and C2 demonstrated consistent selection of figures A1C1 and A2C2. A final test with figures A1C1 and A2C1, or with figures A2C2 and A1C2 also showed consistent selections of the same figures -A1C1 and A2C2. The resulting classification among selected and non-selected figures cannot be based on particular properties of the selected figures, or in a combination of a particular set of those properties, because both selected and non-selected figures were compounded by identical values. Instead, the participants selected the figures with two values of the same set (A1,B1, or C1, or A2,B2 or C2). Thus, these results demonstrated categorization based on the relations among the values of the figures. Therefore, these results have important implications for the study of concept formation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of testosterone treatment on the pattern of prostate cell proliferation and differentiation and their correlation with the expression of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). Prostate gland development was compared in intact immature dogs with one-month testosterone-treated immature dogs. Testosterone treatment resulted in a tenfold increase in prostate gland weight compared to untreated dogs, with a typical organization of the gland into a structure similar to that observed in mature dogs. The narrow acini which contain flat basal cells in immature glands were transformed into tubuloacinar structures containing columnar secretory cells and basal cells. The stromal compartments showed an increase in the muscular component as evidenced by the high reactivity to alpha-actin with no remarkable changes in the vimentin expression. In addition, testosterone treatment induced a significant reduction in the proliferation capacity of stromal cells but with no noticeable changes in the proliferation pattern of epithelial cells. These changes in the prostate are associated with a twofold decrease in TGF-beta mRNA expression as assessed by Real-Time PCR. However, the immunolocalization of TGF-beta was shifted slightly from the epithelial cells in untreated animals to the stromal cells of treated animals. Based on these results it appears that testosterone acts to coordinate prostatic cell proliferation and differentiation and direct their organization into a structure resembling that of the mature gland. The testosterone regulation of the prostate gland appears to involve the regulation of TGF-beta gene expression.  相似文献

A method is described which allows the size of patches of like cells in mosaic tissues to be estimated from the frequency with which small samples taken from the tissue contain both of the mosaic cell types. The mosaic patches are represented as close-packed geometric figures arranged in twoor three-dimensional tissues. Small samples drawn at random from these tissues will include portions of one or more patches; only those samples which include portions of two or more dissimilar patches (mixed samples) will contain both cell types. The expected frequency of mixed samples is calculated as a function of the shape of the mosaic patches, the frequency of the two mosaic cell types and the sample to patch size ratio. This expected frequency is not strongly dependent on patch shape for triangular, square and hexagonal patches in two dimensions or for cubic and orthotetrakaidekahedral patches in three dimensions. Elongation of square patches along one axis or of cubic patches along one or two axes results in slight increases in the expected frequency of mixed samples for given sample to patch size ratio.  相似文献
