Pathogenecity and race classification of some isolates of V. dahliae from resistant tomato in Morocco In Morocco, the cv. H 204, resistant to Verticillium dahliae race 1 is widely used under plastic tunnels. Use of this cultivar controlled the disease for many years but recently a high incidence of Verticillium on this hybird was obsereved. V. dahliae was isolated from 90 % of the wilted plants.The other 10 % were infected by F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici alone (7 %) or in association with V dabliae (3 %). The inoculation of the Verticillium susceptible cv. Vemone and of the race 1 resistant cv. H 204 by 120 isolates obtained from the resistant hybird, showed that (69 %) of the isolates are race 1 and 31 % are race 2. There are different virulence levels of V. dahliae race 2 both on the susceptible cv. Vemone and on the race 1 resistant cv. H 204. Race 2 on the average was less virulenton the susceptible than on the resistant cultivar.  相似文献

During 1971 and 1972 leaf spot infection caused by Pseudomonas morsprunorum was far more severe on the cv. Roundel than on the normally more susceptible cv. Napoleon, and Roundel supported higher leaf surface populations of the pathogen. This unprecedented reversal in the established field performance of the two cultivars was associated with the presence on the trees of a colony variant (race 2) of P. morsprunorum that differed from the forms of the organism previously described (race 1) in physiological, pathological and phage sensitivity characteristics. In inoculation experiments race 2 isolates showed some specificity for Roundel and race 1 isolates for Napoleon. This difference was reflected in the distribution of the races on trees of the two cultivars growing in experimental plots and commercial orchards. Similar interactions between race and host genotype were observed amongst progeny from breeding programmes and material originally selected for resistance to bacterial canker after inoculation with race 1 proved susceptible to race 2. Three distinct groups of isolates with the colony characteristics of race 2 have been identified and one of these has affinities with Pseudomonas syringae. Group 1 isolates, corresponding to P. morsprunorum and comprising non-fluorescent forms, were the most virulent in pathogenicity tests and accounted for the majority of race 2 infections in the field.  相似文献

In this paper we bring together the literatures on frame analysis, the meaning of race and campus racial climate to analyse the race frames – lenses through which individuals understand the role of race in society – held by white students attending elite US universities. For most, the elite university experience coincides with a strengthening or emergence of the diversity frame, which emphasizes the positive benefits of cultural diversity. Still, many also hold a colour-blind frame, which sees race groups as equivalent and racial identities as insignificant. We highlight the ambivalence that these divergent frames create for student perspectives on affirmative action and interracial contact on campus. Our findings demonstrate the mutability of race frames. We also highlight the impact that institutions may have on individuals' race frames. The paper is based on in-depth interviews with forty-seven US-born white undergraduates attending Brown University and Harvard University.  相似文献

Cochliobolus heterostrophus is the causal pathogen of the southern corn leaf blight (SCLB). There are three known races: race O, race C and race T. To determine which Cheterostrophus races comprise the field population in southern China and to assess diversity of these strains in terms of virulence, 200 isolates from diseased plants were collected in nine provinces/municipalities. All were race O, that is, no race T or race C isolates were found. Sixty race O isolates that sporulated well were chosen for further analysis. Virulence was measured using the integral optical density (IOD) of leaf lesions on four maize inbred lines. UPGMA cluster analysis of AFLP markers was applied to the 60 race O isolates plus control race O, T and C strains. Phylogenetic distribution, geographic location and virulence were not correlated. These results can provide valuable information for guidance in early warning and disease control.  相似文献

Fifty-eight strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea were collected from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, The Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia. The bacterial cultures were fluorescent on King's medium B, oxidase negative, produced levan, and induced a hypersensitive reaction (HR) on tobacco leaves within 24h. The race of each strain was determined by inoculating a set of seven differential soybean cultivars: Acme, Chippewa, Flambeau, Harosoy, Lindarin, Merit and Norchief.Conditions of plant cultivation, bacterial inoculation and plant incubation had to be standardized scrupulously to obtain reproducible results. Authentic strains belonging to races 1, 4, 5, and 6 produced the expected reactions on the differentials. However, strains of race 2 and race 4 induced identical responses on the differential cultivars. The differentiating critierion between these two races was the ability of race 2 to produce a brown diffusable pigment on King's medium B. The most prevalent race, occurring in every European country studied, was race 4. This is the most aggressive race of P. glycinea, since it infects all the cultivars of the set of differentials. From 58 strains tested, 42 belonged to race 4, 4 to race 6, and 6 to race 9. For two strains race identification was impossible. The remaining 4 isolates did not fit into the pattern of known races. It is proposed that these strains belong to a new race (no. 10) which is similar to race 5, but can inf, ect the soybean cultivar ‘Lindarin’. On the other hand, race 10 can not infect cv. ‘Chippewa’, in contrast to race 9.  相似文献

The presence ofGeotrichum candidum citrus race, the citrus sour rot pathogen, was examined in soils of citrus groves and non-citrus fields of Japan. Soil samples were collected from 223 sites (118 sites in citrus groves, and 105 sites in fields cultivated with 33 species of non-citrus plants and in evergreen broad-leaved forest) in 11 main citrus-growing prefectures, and Hokkaido, a non-citrus-growing area. Of 236 soil samples from citrus groves, 95.76% containedG. candidum citrus race and 0.42% contained the non-citrus race; while of 210 samples from non-citrus fields, 62.85% and 4.76% contained the citrus race and the non-citrus race respectively. All of the citrus race isolates obtained either from citrus groves or non-citrus fields were pathogenic on lemon (Citrus limon) and satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu), but some of these isolates failed to infect orange (Citrus sinensis). The non-citrus races were pathogenic on ripe tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum) and ripe muskmelon fruit (Cucumis melo var.reticulatus). Results indicated that citrus sour rot pathogen is widely distributed in citrus groves and non-citrus fields of diverse plant species in Japan.  相似文献

Inoculation of wheat seedlings with a non-virulent race of Puccinia striiformis delayed the onset of sporulation of a virulent race and also decreased the spore mass produced. Similarly, the sporulation of a virulent race of Uromyces appendiculatus on bean seedlings was reduced by application of a weakly virulent race. We suggest that these effects of induced resistance could retard the development of rust diseases in the field particularly in multiline varieties.  相似文献

1. For herbivorous insects, the incorporation of a novel host into the diet, and subsequent formation of distinct host associations (races), is thought to be a significant early step in the speciation process. While many studies have addressed this issue, virtually nothing is known about the evolutionary response of natural enemies to herbivore host‐race formation. 2. The hypothesis that the parasitoid wasp Eurytoma gigantea (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) has formed host races in direct response to the host shift and subsequent host‐race formation by its host, the gallmaker Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae) was tested. Emergence time, mating preference, and female oviposition preference were determined for parasitoids derived from galls of each Eurosta host race. 3. Male and female E. gigantea overlap broadly in their emergence times from each Eurosta host race, suggesting that there is no phenological barrier to gene flow. 4. In choice experiments, female parasitoids did not mate assortatively: females that emerged from one Eurosta host race were equally likely to mate with males from either Eurosta host race. 5. Oviposition behaviour experiments revealed that female parasitoids do not prefer to oviposit on their host race of origin and that there is no overall preference for one host race, even though fitness is higher when parasitoids are reared from Eurosta galls of the Solidago gigantea host race than when reared from Eurosta galls of the Solidago altissima host race. 6. These results suggest that E. gigantea has not diverged in parallel with its host in response to the herbivore host‐plant shift. Further studies are needed before the ubiquity of this diversification mechanism can be evaluated fully.  相似文献

Broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is a root parasite of sunflower that is regarded as one of the most important constraints of sunflower production in the Mediterranean region. Breeding for resistance is the most effective method of control. P-96 is a sunflower line which shows dominant resistance to broomrape race E and recessive resistance to the very new race F. The objective of this study was to map and characterize quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to race E and to race F of broomrape in P-96. A population from a cross between P-96 and the susceptible line P-21 was phenotyped for broomrape resistance in four experiments, two for race E and two for race F, by measuring different resistance parameters (resistance or susceptibility, number of broomrape per plant, and proportion of resistant plants per F3 family). This population was also genotyped with microsatellite and RFLP markers. A linkage map comprising 103 marker loci distributed on 17 linkage groups was developed, and composite interval mapping analyses were performed. In total, five QTL (or1.1, or3.1, or7.1 or13.1 and or13.2) for resistance to race E and six QTL (or1.1, or4.1, or5.1, or13.1, or13.2 and or16.1) for resistance to race F of broomrape were detected on 7 of the 17 linkage groups. Phenotypic variance for race E resistance was mainly explained by the major QTL or3.1 associated to the resistance or susceptibility character (R2=59%), while race F resistance was explained by QTL with a small to moderate effect (R2 from 15.0% to 38.7%), mainly associated with the number of broomrape per plant. Or3.1 was race E-specific, while or1.1, or13.1 and or13.2 of were non-race specific. Or13.1, and or13.2 were stable across the four experiments. Or3.1, and or7.1 were stable over the two race E experiments and or1.1 and or5.1 over the two race F experiments. The results from this study suggest that resistance to broomrape in sunflower is controlled by a combination of qualitative, race-specific resistance affecting the presence or absence of broomrape and a quantitative non-race specific resistance affecting their number.Communicated by C. Plant pathogens secrete effector molecules during host invasion to promote colonization. However, some of these effectors become recognized by host receptors to mount a defence response and establish immunity. Recently, a novel resistance was identified in wild tomato, mediated by the single dominant V2 locus, to control strains of the soil-borne vascular wilt fungus Verticillium dahliae that belong to race 2. With comparative genomics of race 2 strains and resistance-breaking race 3 strains, we identified the avirulence effector that activates V2 resistance, termed Av2. We identified 277 kb of race 2-specific sequence comprising only two genes encoding predicted secreted proteins that are expressed during tomato colonization. Subsequent functional analysis based on genetic complementation into race 3 isolates and targeted deletion from the race 1 isolate JR2 and race 2 isolate TO22 confirmed that one of the two candidates encodes the avirulence effector Av2 that is recognized in V2 tomato plants. Two Av2 allelic variants were identified that encode Av2 variants that differ by a single acid. Thus far, a role in virulence could not be demonstrated for either of the two variants.  相似文献

Physiological changes were investigated in the cardio-respiratory function of competitors in a bicycle race which involved not a flat course but ascending a mountain, from 1400m to 2800m. Heart rate throughout the race, arterial oxygen saturation and pulmonary function before and after the race of well trained competitors were measured. The individual's maximal heart rate during the race was designated as HRmax for the calculations. (1) There were significant correlations between the age and the mean %HRmax during the race, between mean %HRmax and time, and between age and time (n=15); the mean %HRmax had a 3.90 times greater effect on time than did age. (2) The individuals who performed best had lower values of oxygen saturation just after finishing the race (n=51). (3) At 1 min after reaching the finishing line, oxygen saturation levels had recovered to the value of 20 min after finishing the race, whereas the heart rate was still in the process of recovery (n=18). (4) Maximum expiratory flow at 50% vital capacity measured 30 min after reaching the finishing line was significantly higher than at the starting point. The intensity of the load on the cardiac system produced by completion of this course was estimated to be almost the same as that of a full marathon on a flat course. The time depended on both the youth of the cyclist and on his ability to maintain a high value of %HRmax during the race.  相似文献

Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis (FOM) is a devastating disease of melon worldwide. Pathogenicity tests performed with F. oxysporum isolates obtained from Italian melon‐growing areas allowed to identify thirty‐four FOM isolates and the presence of all four races. The aims of this work were to examine genetic relatedness among FOM isolates by race determination and to perform phylogenetic analyses of identified FOM races including also other formae speciales of F. oxysporum of cucurbits. Results showed that FOM race 1,2 was the most numerous with a total of eighteen isolates, while six and nine isolates were identified as race 0 and 1, respectively, and just one isolate was assigned to race 2. Phylogenetic analysis was performed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiling and by translation elongation factor‐1α (TEF‐1α) sequencing. The analysis of RAPD profiles separated FOM races into two distinct clades. Clade 1, which included races 0, 1 and 1,2, was further divided into ‘subclade a’ which grouped almost all race 1,2 isolates, and into ‘subclade b’ which included race 0 and 1 isolates. Clade 2 comprised only race 2 isolates. The phylogenetic analysis based on TEF‐1α separated FOM from the other formae speciales of F. oxysporum. Also with TEF‐1α analysis, FOM races 0, 1 and 1,2 isolates grouped in one single clade clearly separated from FOM race 2 isolates which grouped closer to F. oxysporum f.sp. cucumerinum. RAPD technique was more effective than TEF‐1α in differentiating FOM race 1,2 isolates from those belonging to the closely related races 0 and 1. Both phylogenetic analyses supported the close relationship between the three different FOM races which might imply the derivation from one another and the different origin of FOM race 2.  相似文献

Thirty six tomato wild species accessions of the subgenera Eulycopersicon and Eriopersicon of the genus Lycopersicon were inoculated with race T1 and T3 of Xanthomonas vesicatoria by vaccum infiltration method. Degree of diseases was evaluated by scale of 0 to 4. It was established that some accessions showed low degree of disease to race T1 and others to race T3. LA 2623 indicated very low degree of disease to race T1 and was immune in inoculation with T3. LA 386 and LA 1297 manifested hypersensitive reaction to both races and PI 127826 to race T3 only. The accessions possessing low degree of disease or hypersensitive reaction to race T1 and race T3 are new promising sources of resistance to Xanthomonas vesicatoria.  相似文献

The common shrewSorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758 is subject to intense chromosomal polymorphism. About 65 chromosome races are presently known. One of these chromosome races (the Valais race) is karyologically, morphologically, biochemically, and genetically clearly distinct from all other chromosome races of the species. Recent studies of hybrid zones between the Valais race and other chromosome races in the Swiss and French Alps add further strong evidence for the specific taxonomic status of the Valais race. Chromosomes and diagnostic protein markers reveal sharp frequency clines and strong heterozygote deficits. In one hybrid zone, the maintenance of the strong genetic differentiation of the hybridizing taxa was confirmed by a study with autosomal microsatellites indicating minimal gene flow. A microsatellite marker on the Y-chromosome showed complete absence of male mediated gene flow suggesting hybrid male sterility. To clarify the taxonomic status of this taxon, additional analyses were conducted. A morphometric analysis of the mandible indicated the Valais race is morphologically as distinct from neighbouring chromosome races ofS. araneus as from other relatedSorex species. In a phylogeny based on complete mitochondrial DNA cytochromeb gene sequences, the Valais race clearly appears as the sister taxon to all other races ofS. araneus. Therefore, the chromosome race Valais ofS. araneus herein is elevated to specific status and the nameSorex antinorii Bonaparte, 1840 is applied.  相似文献

Race was an important topic to the physical anthropologists of 1918, but their views were not monolithic. Multiple perspectives on race are expressed in the first volume of the AJPA, which encompass biological determinism and assumptions about evolutionary processes underlying the race concept. Most importantly, many of the significant alternative approaches to the study of human variation were already expressed in 1918. This paper examines race from the different perspectives of three key contributions to the first volume of the AJPA: papers from Hrdlička, Hooton, and Boas. The meaning of race derived from this work is then discussed. Despite new understandings gained through the neo-Darwinian synthesis and the growth of genetics, the fundamentals of the modern discussions of race were already planted in 1918. V4604, a Cambridge University accession of Phaseolus vulgaris, had a high degree of leaf resistance to race 1 of Pseudomonas phaseolicola and partial resistance to race 2. Genetic control of resistance to race 1 was by a major dominant gene which is also present in the cv. Red Mexican. The partial resistance of V4604 to race 2 was under polygenic control, as was the low level resistance to race 2 in V4058.  相似文献

A crown, foot and fruit rot of watermelon has been observed in most of the watermelon production areas in Tunisia. A survey conducted from 2000 to 2001 allowed the isolation of 291 isolates which were identified as Fusarium solani. These isolates were identified as F. solani f. sp. cucurbitae (Fsc) and races 1 and 2 characterized on the basis of pathogenicity tests on watermelon seedlings and muskmelon fruits. These results were confirmed by counts of the number of septa in the macroconidia. About 271 isolates were identified as Fsc race 1, 12 isolates were identified as Fsc race 2 and eight isolates were not pathogenic. Race 1 is widely distributed in watermelon production areas in Tunisia and race 2 has a lower incidence but it is present in the north, the middle and southern Tunisian watermelon cropping areas. Additionally, a study to compare the virulence of 122 isolates of Fsc race 1 showed different degrees of virulence among them. This is the first report of Fsc races 1 and 2 in Tunisia.  相似文献

Careful assessment of the comparative diversity for molecular markers and for potentially-useful morpho-agronomic traits is paramount to the analysis of a genome through the mapping of favorable genes. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor ssp.bicolor) varieties are traditionally classified into five races on the basis of morphological traits, especially panicle and grain traits. Isozyme diversity has provided a new insight into genetic diversity, and showed a marked geographic structure. We performed RFLP analysis on 94 varieties, chosen to represent the main cross combinations (race × geographic origin), using 35 maize probes that detect polymorphism with at least one of the two restriction enzymesHindIII andXbaI. A total of 50 polymorphic probe-enzyme combinations yielded 158 polymorphic bands. The bicolor race appeared highly variable and included many rare markers. Among the other races multivariate analysis of the data differentiated six clusters corresponding, by decreasing magnitude of divergence, to: the margaritiferum types (a sub-race of race guinea); the guinea forms from western Africa; race caudatum; race durra; race kafir; and the guinea forms from southern Africa.The apparent geographic differentiation was related to the contrasting distribution of these races and to a higher similarity between races localized in southern Africa. The data agree with the current hypotheses on sorghum domestication but reveal associations between neutral markers and traits probably highly subjected to human selection. Whether such associations will be observed with other useful traits, and to what extent they are maintained by genetic linkage, is worth exploring.  相似文献

Xanthomonas citri subsp. malvacearum (Xcm) causes severe qualitative and quantitative losses to farmers in cotton-growing areas of the world. Isolates of Xcm were extracted from cotton seeds obtained from five ginneries located in Funtua, Malumfashi, Gusau and Zaria and standardised to 10?5?cfu/ml. One isolate per location was used to inoculate three sets of 10 cotton differential lines known to differentiate races of Xcm through possession of B-genes for resistance to bacterial blight. Each cotton differential line was inoculated with the isolates at the six-leaf stage and SDW was inoculated as control. One hundred and sixty pots used were arranged in completely randomised design on the screen house bench. Four different pathogenic races were identified namely race 1, race 12, race 13 and race 16. This confirms the existence of an evolution of the species across northern Nigeria.  相似文献

Race 5 of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, causal agent of tan spot, induces two distinct symptoms, necrosis and chlorosis in susceptible tetraploid and hexaploid wheat, respectively. This study was conducted under controlled environmental conditions to determine the inheritance of resistance to P. tritici-repentis, race 5, in a tetraploid wheat population and to map the resistance genes. Additionally, the relationship between the resistance genes effective against necrosis inducing races 3 and 5 in tetraploid wheat was determined. A population of 98 recombinant-inbred lines (RIL) was developed from a cross between the resistant genotype Triticum turgidum # 283 (PI352519) and the susceptible durum cultivar Coulter. This RIL population was screened individually with race 3 and race 5 and molecular mapping of the resistance gene(s) in this population was conducted. Additionally, the F2 and F4:5 generations of this population were screened with race 5 to determine the genetic control of resistance. Plants were inoculated at the two-leaf stage and disease reaction was assessed based on 1 to 5 lesion-type rating scale eight days after inoculation. Segregation analysis of the F2 generation and of the F4:5 and F6:7 families indicated that a single recessive gene controlled resistance to necrosis induced by race 5. Analysis of the mapping data of the T. turgidum # 283/Coulter RIL population indicate that a major gene, designated tsn5, controlling resistance to race 5 is located on the long arm of chromosome 3B. The tsn5 gene is 8.3 cM proximal to the gene tsn2 that controls resistance to necrosis induced by race 3.  相似文献
