Microorganism with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability plays a significant role in nitrogen removal process, especially in the eutrophic waters with excessive nitrogen loads. The nitrogen removal capacity of microorganism may suffer from low temperature or nitrite nitrogen source. In this study, a hypothermia aerobic nitrite-denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas tolaasii strain Y-11, was selected to determine the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability with mixed nitrogen source at 15 °C. The sole nitrogen removal efficiencies of strain Y-11 in simulated wastewater were obtained. After 24 h of incubation at 15 °C, the ammonium nitrogen fell below the detection limit from an initial value of 10.99 mg/L. Approximately 88.0 ± 0.33% of nitrate nitrogen was removed with the initial concentration of 11.78 mg/L and the nitrite nitrogen was not detected with the initial concentration of 10.75 mg/L after 48 h of incubation at 15 °C. Additionally, the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification nitrogen removal ability of P. tolaasii strain Y-11 was evaluated using low concentration of mixed NH4+-N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 5 mg/L-N each) and high concentration of mixed NH4+–N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 100 mg/L-N each). There was no nitrite nitrogen accumulation at the time of evaluation. The results demonstrated that P. tolaasii strain Y-11 had higher simultaneous nitrification and denitrification capacity with low concentration of mixed inorganic nitrogen sources and may be applied in low temperature wastewater treatment.  相似文献

In uranium-contaminated aquifers co-contaminated with nitrate, denitrifiers play a critical role in bioremediation. Six strains of denitrifying bacteria belonging to Rhizobium, Pseudomonas, and Castellaniella were isolated from the Oak Ridge Integrated Field Research Challenge Site (OR-IFRC), where biostimulation of acidic (pH 3.5–6.5), nitrate-contaminated (up to 140 mM) groundwater occurred. Three isolates were characterized in regards to nitrite tolerance, denitrification kinetic parameters, and growth on different denitrification intermediates. Kinetic and growth experiments showed that Pseudomonas str. GN33#1 reduced NO? 3 most rapidly (Vmax = 15.8 μmol e?·min?1·mg protein?1) and had the fastest generation time (gt) on NO? 3 (2.6 h). Castellaniella str. 4.5A2 was the most low pH and NO? 2 tolerant and grew rapidly on NO? 2 (gt = 4.0 h). Rhizobium str. GN32#2 was also tolerant of low pH values and reduced NO? 2 rapidly (Vmax = 10.6 μmol e?·min?1·mg protein?1) but was far less NO? 2 tolerant than Castellaniella str. 4.5A2. Growth of and denitrification by these three strains incubated together and individually were measured in OR-IFRC groundwater at pHs 5 and 7 to determine whether they cooperate or compete during denitrification. Mixed assemblages reduced NO? 3 more rapidly and more completely than any individual isolate over the course of the experiment. The results described in this article demonstrate 1) that this synthetic assemblage comprised of three physiologically distinct denitrifying bacterial isolates cooperate to achieve more complete levels of denitrification and 2) the importance of pH- and nitrite-tolerant bacteria such as Castellaniella str. 4.5A2 in minimizing NO? 2 accumulation in high-NO? 3 groundwater during bioremediation. Variable contents of nitrite (NO2 ?)- and nitrate (NO3 ?)-nitrogen are present in wastewater of metallurgical cylinder-producing industries after treatment in a physical-chemical plant. Biological denitrification and oxidation treatments to reduce the oxidized nitrogen forms to within legal limits were evaluated. Wastewater streams were characterized and quantified in order to build a pilot plant, improve strategies to reduce environmental impact and increase water recycling. Initial sedimentation of raw mixed streams reduced iron and zinc contents by 87% and 71%, respectively. The resulting COD was refractory to be used in biological phases and an added carbon source was necessary to optimise the denitrification process. The biological treatment gave good results even without subsequent physical-chemical treatments, lowering NO2 ? and NO3 ? values to below the 0.6 and 20 mg L?1 limits respectively.  相似文献

A novel halophilic strain that could carry out heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification was isolated and named as Halomonas campisalis ha3. It removed inorganic nitrogen compounds (e.g. NO3 ?, NO2 ? and NH4 +) simultaneously, and grew well in the medium containing up to 20 % (w/v) NaCl. PCR revealed four genes in the genome of ha3 related to aerobic denitrification: napA, nirS, norB and nosZ. The optimal conditions for aerobic denitrification were pH 9.0, at 37 °C, with 4 % (w/v) NaCl and sodium succinate as carbon source. The nitrogen removal rate was 87.5 mg NO3 ?–N l?1 h?1. Therefore, this strain is a potential aerobic denitrifier for the treatment of saline wastewater.  相似文献

Static experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of environmental factors on nitrate (NO3?-N)-removal efficiency, such as NO3?-N loading, pH value, C/N ratio and temperature in activated sludge using Fe (II) as electron donor. The results demonstrated that the average denitrification rate increased from 1.25 to 2.23 mg NO3?-N/(L·h) with NO3?-N loading increased from 30 to 60 mg/L. When pH increased from 7 to 8, the concentration of NO3?-N and nitrite (NO2?-N) in effluent were all maintained at quite low levels. C/N ratio had little impact on denitrification process, i.e., inorganic carbon (C) source could still be enough for denitrification process with C/N ratio as low as 5. Temperature had a significant effect on the denitrification efficiency, and NO3?-N removal efficiency of 92.03%, 96.77%, 97.67% and 98.23% could be obtained with temperature of 25°C, 30°C, 35°C and 40°C, respectively. SEM, XRD and XRF analysis was used to investigate microscopic surface morphology and chemical composition of the denitrifying activated sludge, and mechanism of the nitrate-dependent anaerobic ferrous oxidation (NAFO) bacterias could be explored with this research.  相似文献

Denitrification is an important net sink for NO3 ? in streams, but direct measurements are limited and in situ controlling factors are not well known. We measured denitrification at multiple scales over a range of flow conditions and NO3 ? concentrations in streams draining agricultural land in the upper Mississippi River basin. Comparisons of reach-scale measurements (in-stream mass transport and tracer tests) with local-scale in situ measurements (pore-water profiles, benthic chambers) and laboratory data (sediment core microcosms) gave evidence for heterogeneity in factors affecting benthic denitrification both temporally (e.g., seasonal variation in NO3 ? concentrations and loads, flood-related disruption and re-growth of benthic communities and organic deposits) and spatially (e.g., local stream morphology and sediment characteristics). When expressed as vertical denitrification flux per unit area of streambed (U denit, in μmol N m?2 h?1), results of different methods for a given set of conditions commonly were in agreement within a factor of 2–3. At approximately constant temperature (~20 ± 4°C) and with minimal benthic disturbance, our aggregated data indicated an overall positive relation between U denit (~0–4,000 μmol N m?2 h?1) and stream NO3 ? concentration (~20–1,100 μmol L?1) representing seasonal variation from spring high flow (high NO3 ?) to late summer low flow (low NO3 ?). The temporal dependence of U denit on NO3 ? was less than first-order and could be described about equally well with power-law or saturation equations (e.g., for the unweighted dataset, U denit ≈26 * [NO3 ?]0.44 or U denit ≈640 * [NO3 ?]/[180 + NO3 ?]; for a partially weighted dataset, U denit ≈14 * [NO3 ?]0.54 or U denit ≈700 * [NO3 ?]/[320 + NO3 ?]). Similar parameters were derived from a recent spatial comparison of stream denitrification extending to lower NO3 ? concentrations (LINX2), and from the combined dataset from both studies over 3 orders of magnitude in NO3 ? concentration. Hypothetical models based on our results illustrate: (1) U denit was inversely related to denitrification rate constant (k1denit, in day?1) and vertical transfer velocity (v f,denit, in m day?1) at seasonal and possibly event time scales; (2) although k1denit was relatively large at low flow (low NO3 ?), its impact on annual loads was relatively small because higher concentrations and loads at high flow were not fully compensated by increases in U denit; and (3) although NO3 ? assimilation and denitrification were linked through production of organic reactants, rates of NO3 ? loss by these processes may have been partially decoupled by changes in flow and sediment transport. Whereas k1denit and v f,denit are linked implicitly with stream depth, NO3 ? concentration, and(or) NO3 ? load, estimates of U denit may be related more directly to field factors (including NO3 ? concentration) affecting denitrification rates in benthic sediments. Regional regressions and simulations of benthic denitrification in stream networks might be improved by including a non-linear relation between U denit and stream NO3 ? concentration and accounting for temporal variation.  相似文献

This paper reports on the feasibility of using sub-surface horizontal flow constructed wetlands to treat municipal wastewater in Hong Kong. Two different hydraulic retention times (10-day and 5-day) and different types of treatments (with and without vegetation) were investigated. Better performance in the planted treatments was obtained in both hydraulic retention time treatments. Nutrients were better removed in treatments with plants (DOC 68% and 72%; NH4-N 92% and 95%; TKN 65% and 62%; PO4-P 79% and 72%; TP 67% and 52% for 10-day HRT; 5-day HRT treatments). In the unplanted treatments, negative values were achieved in the removal of phosphate in wastewater and the presence of plants could further polish the wastewater so phosphate concentrations decreased in the planted treatments. The effluent concentrations in the planted treatments meet the Inland Water A effluent standard, and they can be used in recreation park in Hong Kong (1 mg L−1 of NOx; 15 mg L−1 of NH3; 1 mg L−1 of TP).  相似文献

A packed bed reactor (PBR) was fed with nitrate containing synthetic wastewater or effluent from a sequencing batch reactor used for nitrification. The C source introduced into the PBR consisted of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced from anaerobic acidogenesis of food wastes. When nitrate loading rates ranged from 0.50 to 1.01 kg N/m3·d, the PBR exhibited 100∼98.8% NO3 -N removal efficiencies and nitrite concentrations in the effluent ranged from 0 to 0.6 NO2 -N mg/L. When the PBR was further investigated to determine nitrate removal activity along the bed height using a nitrate loading rate less than 1.01 kg N/m3·d, 100% nitrate removal efficiency was observed. Approximately 83.2% nitrate removal efficiency was observed in the lower 50% of the packed-bed height. When reactor performance at a C/N ratio of 4 and a C/N ratio of 5 was compared, the PBR showed better removal efficiency (96.5%) of nitrate and less nitrite concentration in the effluent at the C/N ratio of 5. VFAs were found to be a good alternative to methanol as a carbon source for denitrification of a municipal wastewater containing 40 mg-N/L.  相似文献

Long-term elevated atmogenic deposition (~5 g m?2 year?1) of reactive nitrogen (N) causes N saturation in forests of subtropical China which may lead to high nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Recently, we found high N2O emission rates (up to 1,730 μg N2O–N m?2 h?1) during summer on well-drained acidic acrisols (pH = 4.0) along a hill slope in the forested Tieshanping catchment, Chongqing, southwest China. Here, we present results from an in situ 15N–NO3 ? labeling experiment to assess the contribution of nitrification and denitrification to N2O emissions in these soils. Two loads of 99 at.% K15NO3 (equivalent to 0.2 and 1.0 g N m?2) were applied as a single dose to replicated plots at two positions along the hill slope (at top and bottom, respectively) during monsoonal summer. During a 6-day period after label application, we found that 71–100 % of the emitted N2O was derived from the labeled NO3 ? pool irrespective of slope position. Based on this, we assume that denitrification is the dominant process of N2O formation in these forest soils. Within 6 days after label addition, the fraction of the added 15N–NO3 ? emitted as 15N–N2O was highest at the low-N addition plots (0.2 g N m?2), amounting to 1.3 % at the top position of the hill slope and to 3.2 % at the bottom position, respectively. Our data illustrate the large potential of acid forest soils in subtropical China to form N2O from excess NO3 ? most likely through denitrification.  相似文献

1. High water column NO3? concentrations, low light availability and anoxic, muddy sediments are hypothesised to be key factors hampering growth of rooted submerged plants in shallow, eutrophic fresh water systems. In this study, the relative roles and interacting effects of these potential stressors on survival, growth, allocation of biomass and foliar nutrient concentrations of Potamogeton alpinus were determined in a mesocosm experiment using contrasting values of each factor (500 versus 0 μmol L?1 NO3?; low irradiance, corresponding to the eutrophic environment, versus ambient irradiance; and muddy versus sandy sediment). 2. Low irradiance, high NO3? and sandy sediment led to reduced growth. In a muddy sediment, plants had lower root : shoot ratios than in a sandy sediment. 3. Growth at high NO3? and on the sandy sediment resulted in lower foliar N and C concentrations than in the contrasting treatments. The C : N ratio was higher at high NO3? and on the sandy sediment. Foliar P was higher on the muddy than on the sandy sediment but was not affected by irradiance or NO3?. The N : P ratio was lowest at high NO3? on the sandy sediment. 4. Total foliar free amino acid concentration was lowest on sand, low irradiance and high NO3?. Total free amino acid concentration and growth were not correlated. 5. Turbidity and ortho‐PO43? concentration of the water layer were lower at high water column NO3? indicating that the growth reduction was not associated with increased algal growth but that physiological mechanisms were involved. 6. We conclude that high water column NO3? concentrations can significantly reduce the growth of ammonium preferring rooted submerged species such as P. alpinus, particularly on sediments with a relatively low nutrient availability. Further experiments are needed to assess potential negative effects on other species and to further elucidate the underlying physiological mechanisms.  相似文献

High salinity wastewaters have limited treatment options due to the occurrence of salt inhibition in conventional biological treatments. Using recirculating marine aquaculture effluents as a case study, this work explored the use of Constructed Wetlands as a treatment option for nutrient and salt loads reduction. Three different substrates were tested for nutrient adsorption, of which expanded clay performed better. This substrate adsorbed 0.31 mg kg?1 of NH4 +?N and 5.60 mg kg?1 of PO4 3??P and 6.9 mg kg?1 dissolved salts after 7 days of contact. Microcosms with Typha latifolia planted in expanded clay and irrigated with aquaculture wastewater (salinity 2.4%, 7 days hydraulic retention time, for 4 weeks), were able to remove 94% NH4 +?N (inlet 0.25 ± 0.13 mg L?1), 78% NO2 ??N (inlet 0.78 ± 0.62 mg L?1), 46% NO3 ??N (inlet 18.83 ± 8.93 mg L?1) whereas PO4 3??P was not detected (inlet 1.41 ± 0.21 mg L?1). Maximum salinity reductions of 52% were observed. Despite some growth inhibition, plants remained viable, with 94% survival rate. Daily treatment dynamics studies revealed rapid PO4 3??P adsorption, unbalancing the N:P ratio and possibly affecting plant development. An integrated treatment approach, coupled with biomass valorization, is suggested to provide optimal resource management possibilities.  相似文献

Intensive agriculture leads to increased nitrogen fluxes (mostly as nitrate, NO3 ?) to aquatic ecosystems, which in turn creates ecological problems, including eutrophication and associated harmful algal blooms. These problems have focused scientific attention on understanding the controls on nitrate reduction processes such as denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Our objective was to determine the effects of nutrient-tolerant bioturbating invertebrates (tubificid oligochaetes) on nitrogen cycling processes, specifically coupled nitrification–denitrification, net denitrification, DNRA, and biogeochemical fluxes (O2, NO3 ?, NH4 +, CO2, N2O, and CH4) in freshwater sediments. A mesocosm experiment determined how tubificid density and increasing NO3 ? concentrations (using N15 isotope tracing) interact to affect N cycling processes. At the lowest NO3 ? concentration and in the absence of bioturbation, the relative importance of denitrification to DNRA was similar (i.e., 49.6 and 50.4 ± 8.1 %, respectively). Increasing NO3 ? concentrations in the control cores (without fauna) stimulated denitrification, but did not enhance DNRA, which significantly altered the relative importance of denitrification compared to DNRA (94.6 vs. 5.4 ± 0.9 %, respectively). The presence of tubificid oligochaetes enhanced O2, NO3 ?, NH4 + fluxes, greenhouse gas production, and N cycling processes. The relative importance of denitrification to DNRA shifted towards favoring denitrification with both the increase in NO3 ? concentrations and the increase of bioturbation activity. Our study highlights that understanding the interactions between nutrient-tolerant bioturbating species and nitrate contamination is important for determining the nitrogen removal capacity of eutrophic freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

The biodetoxification of cyanide-rich wastewater has become increasingly popular because of its cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Therefore, we have developed an effective method, optimised by response surface methodology, for detoxifying cyanide-rich wastewater using Bacillus sp. CN-22, which was newly isolated from a cyanide-contaminated electroplating sludge and could tolerate a CN? concentration of 700 mg L?1. The concentration of CN? in the treated wastewater decreased from 200 to 6.62 mg L?1 after cultivation with 2.38 % inocula for 72 h on the medium, consisting of 0.05 % KH2PO4, 0.15 % K2HPO4, 1.0 mM MgCl2, 1.0 mM FeCl3, 0.1 % NH4Cl, and 0.1 % glycerol. The CN? degradability of 96.69 % is similar to the predicted value of 96.82 %. The optimal cultivation conditions were controlled as follows: initial pH, 10.3; temperature, 31 °C; and rotary speed, 193 rpm. The maintenance of higher pH in the overall treatment procedures may avoid the production of volatile HCN and the risk associated with cyanide detoxification. Additionally, the bacterial strain Bacillus sp. CN-22, with its potent cyanide-degrading activity at the initial CN concentration of 200 mg L?1, may be employed to effectively treat cyanide-rich wastewater, especially electroplating effluent.  相似文献

A column transport experiment was conducted to examine the release and methylation of Hg using Hg contaminated sediment from the floodplain of the South River near Waynesboro, Virginia. Three input solutions were sequentially introduced into the column. Input 1 was unamended South River water, Input 2 was river water amended with 100 mg L?1 SO4 and 3600 mg L?1 lactate, and Input 3 was river water amended with 500 mg L?1 SO4 and 340 mg L?1 lactate. During the first stage of the experiment (Input 1) the effluent Hg concentration was initially 4 µg L?1 and peaked at 21 µg L?1 and after 21 pore volumes stabilized at 13 µg L?1. During the second stage, at high lactate to SO4 ratios, elevated concentrations of acetic and propionic acids were detected, indicating that fermentative bacteria were dominant. During the third stage, at high SO4 to lactate ratios, a decrease in SO4 and an increase in H2S concentrations were detected in the column effluent indicating that SO4 reduction was occurring. Concentrations of methyl Hg (MeHg) in the effluent were variable over the duration of the experiment. During the first phase, concentrations of MeHg remained <3.3 ng L?1. During the fermentative stage, concentrations of MeHg increased to a maximum value of 32 ng L?1, and during the sulfate-reducing stage to a maximum value of 266 ng L?1. When the column was deconstructed both molecular and cultural techniques indicated that sulfate reducing bacteria were most dominant near the influent port. These results indicate that the formation of MeHg in the sediment is not limited by the availability of Hg and that the bacterial community that contributes to mercury methylation can respond quickly to changes in the abundances of electron donors and acceptors.  相似文献

A novel bacterium, strain SZ28, identified as Acinetobacter sp., showed anaerobic denitrification ability using Mn(II) as the electron donor. Nitrate-nitrogen concentration decreased from nearly 16.52–mg L?1 to 4.4–mg L?1, without accumulation of nitrite as an intermediate, with a maximum of 0.063–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, reaching a peak of 0.085–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1 in sodium acetate. The nitrate removal rate reached 0.067–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, 0.059–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, and 0.078 mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1 using Mn(II), S(II), and Fe(II) as electron donors, respectively. The optimum pH was 6.0, with a removal rate of 0.063–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1  相似文献

Rapid immobilization of inorganic nitrogen (N) in soil contributes to ecosystem N accumulation, even in old-growth and chronically-fertilized forests once thought to have poor N retention capacity. In old-growth conifer and hardwood stands in Pennsylvania, we tested the hypotheses that biotic and abiotic N immobilization are regulated by N form and forest type. We added 15NH4 +, 15NO2 ?, and 15NO3 ? to sterile (γ-irradiated) and live organic-horizon soil and define N immobilization as the mass of added 15N remaining in soil following extractions conducted 15 min, 24 h, and 21 days later. Immobilization of NO2 ? (19–25% of added N) occurred in sterile soils within 15 min and was little changed thereafter. Tracer NO3 ? immobilization was not observed, although soils had been pretreated (refrigerated) so as to quantify the lower limit of immobilization potential. Immobilization of NH4 + (27%) occurred in live conifer soils by 21 days but not in other treatments. In 21-day incubations, tracer N immobilization was greater in NO3 ?-poor and humic-rich soils. Immobilization was greater in sterile than in live soil, perhaps owing to artifacts of sterilization. Conifer stands exhibited more massive O-horizons, so NO2 ? immobilization per unit area was greater in conifer (1.46 mg N m?2) than hardwood (0.43 mg N m?2) stands, possibly accounting for lower N leaching from conifer forests. Areal immobilization rates appear to be fast enough to retain all N transformed to NO2 ?, so NO2 ? production may be a limiting step in soil N retention in old-growth ecosystems.  相似文献

Litter inputs are expected to have a strong impact on soil N2O efflux. This study aimed to assess the effects of the litter decomposition process and nutrient efflux from litter to soil on soil N2O efflux in a tropical rainforest. A paired study with a control (L) treatment and a litter-removed (NL) treatment was followed for 2 years, continuously monitoring the effects of these treatments on soil N2O efflux, fresh litter input, decomposed litter carbon (LCI) and nitrogen (LNI), soil nitrate (NO3 ?–N), ammonium (NH4 +–N), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and dissolved nitrogen (DN). Soil N2O flux was 0.48 and 0.32 kg N2O–N ha?1 year?1 for the L and NL treatments, respectively. Removing the litter caused a decrease in the annual soil N2O emission by 33%. The flux values from the litter layer were higher in the rainy season as compared to the dry season (2.10 ± 0.28 vs. 1.44 ± 0.35 μg N m?2 h?1). The N2O fluxes were significantly correlated with the soil NO3 ?–N contents (P < 0.05), indicating that the N2O emission was derived mainly from denitrification as well as other NO3 ? reduction processes. Suitable soil temperature and moisture sustained by rainfall were jointly attributed to the higher soil N2O fluxes of both treatments in the rainy season. The N2O fluxes from the L were mainly regulated by LCI, whereas those from the NL were dominated jointly by soil NO3 ? content and temperature. The effects of LCI and LNI on the soil N2O fluxes were the greatest in the 2 months after litter decomposition. Our results show that litter may affect not only the variability in the quantity of N2O emitted, but also the mechanisms that govern N2O production. However, further studies are still required to elucidate the impacting mechanisms of litter decomposition on N2O emission from tropical forests.  相似文献

Nitrite accumulates during biological denitrification processes when carbon sources are insufficient. Acetate, methanol, and ethanol were investigated as supplementary carbon sources in the nitrite denitrification process using biogranules. Without supplementary external electron donors (control), the biogranules degraded 200 mg l?1 nitrite at a rate of 0.27 mg NO2–N g?1?VSS h?1. Notably, 1,500 mg l?1 acetate and 700 mg l?1 methanol or ethanol enhanced denitrification rates for 200 mg l?1 nitrite at 2.07, 1.20, and 1.60 mg NO2–N g?1?VSS h?1, respectively; these rates were significantly higher than that of the control. The sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the nitrite reductase (NiR) enzyme identified three prominent bands with molecular weights of 37–41 kDa. A linear correlation existed between incremental denitrification rates and incremental activity of the NiR enzyme. The NiR enzyme activity was enhanced by the supplementary carbon sources, thereby increasing the nitrite denitrification rate. The capacity of supplementary carbon source on enhancing NiR enzyme activity follows: methanol?>?acetate?>?ethanol on molar basis or acetate?>?ethanol?>?methanol on an added weight basis.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale study was conducted in a 20.0-L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to explore the feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic carbon and nitrogen from abattoir wastewater. The reactor was operated under three different combinations of aerobic-anoxic sequence, viz., (4+4), (5+3), and (5+4) h of total react period, with influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) level of 2200 ± 50 and 125 ± 5 mg L?1, respectively. In (5+4) h cycle, a maximum 90.27% of ammonia reduction corresponding to initial NH4+-N value of 122.25 mg L?1 and 91.36% of organic carbon removal corresponding to initial SCOD value of 2215.25 mg L?1 have been achieved, respectively. The biokinetic parameters such as yield coefficient (Y), endogenous decay constant (kd), and half-velocity constant (Ks) were also determined to improve the design and operation of package effluent treatment plants comprising SBR units. The specific denitrification rate (qDN) during anoxic condition was estimated as 6.135 mg N/g mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS)·h on 4-h average contact period. The value of Y, kd and Ks for carbon oxidation and nitrification were found to be in the range of 0.6225–0.6952 mg VSS/mg SCOD, 0.0481–0.0588 day?1, and 306.56–320.51 mg L?1, and 0.2461–0.2541 mg VSS/mg NH4+-N, 0.0324–0.0565 day?1, and 38.28–50.08 mg L?1, respectively, for different combinations of react periods.  相似文献

This paper presents an uncomplicated approach to improve estimates of groundwater nutrient load to a marine embayment. A two-dimensional chemical profile of shallow groundwater was analysed in a sandy beach in three seasons (early summer, late summer and mid winter) and an adjusted estimate of groundwater nutrient discharge was derived that accounts for a complex biogeochemical environment and non-conservative behaviour of nutrients in the pre-discharge beach groundwater. The study was conducted at Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, where there has been significant groundwater contamination and associated marine ecological degradation. Losses in nitrogen and increases in phosphorus were observed along the discharge pathway beyond that expected from mixing with marine water, and the changes were attributed to chemically and biologically mediated reactions. A slow groundwater velocity (0.14–0.18 m day?1), high organic carbon (TOC = 0.35–4.9 mmol l?1, DOC = 0.28–4.6 mmol l?1) and low to sub-oxic conditions (DO = 0.4–24% saturation) were deemed suitable for chemically and biologically mediated reactions to occur and subsequently alter regional estimates of groundwater nutrient concentration. Accounting for this environment, groundwater loads were calculated that were 1–2 orders of magnitude less than previous regional-based estimates: 0.4–13 kg NO x ?  day?1, 0.2–24 kg NH4 + day?1 and 0.004–0.8 kg FRP day?1. This paper applies knowledge of recent research and presents scope to marine managers or modellers to account for groundwater inputs to the marine environment.  相似文献
