This investigation relates the occlusal morphology of the continuously growing molars of common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) to the underlying enamel ultrastructure that was investigated using the techniques of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The main feature of the occlusal enamel was a prominent ridge, which followed the contour of the dentine-enamel junction (DEJ). It was found that the occlusal morphology depended upon the orientation of the dentinal and enamel tissues, variations in prism orientation, Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), and presence or absence of cleavage. Cleavage of enamel promoted by sheets of parallel prisms occurred along the face between the DEJ and the ridge, whereas on the face between the ridge and the cementum-enamel junction (CEJ) cleavage was inhibited by HSB. The slope of the latter face was mainly due to a decrease in wear resistance going from the ridge, where prisms were intercepted transversely, toward the CEJ, where they were intercepted obliquely. Occasionally small surface undulations were observed on the face between the ridge and the CEJ. These undulations were found to correspond to gradually decussating enamel regions. The pronounced cleavage of enamel parallel to the face between the DEJ and the ridge played an important role in conferring on the continuously growing molars a distinct property to develop and maintain a self-sharpening ridge throughout the life of the tooth.  相似文献

Square arrays and their role in ridge formation in human lens fibers   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Square arrays in human lens fibers were studied with freeze-fracture and thin-section TEM. In superficial fibers a number of patches of square array particles in the P face and pits in the E face are found in the smooth membrane. In the deeper cortex and the nucleus, fiber cells have undulating membranes and many ridges. Numerous patches of the particles (P face) are distributed in the concave regions, and the pits (E face) in the convex areas of the bumpy membrane. In most ridges, patches of the particles occur at regular intervals in the "valley" portion, while the pits are on the "crest" portion of ridges. Also, continuous square arrays having the same "valley" location as the regularly arranged patches are found in areas with extensive ridge patterns. The overlapping of the outer portions of two adjacent square arrays is found on the sides between the "crest" and the "valley" of the ridges. Structurally, square arrays are located in a nonjunctional part of the membrane; in an orthogonal crystalline arrangement; and with a particle size of about 6 nm and center-center spacing about 6.4 nm. They are structurally different from gap junctions found in the lens fibers. Thin-section studies reveal two types of cellular contacts: thin pentalamellar structures (about 12-13 nm in overall thickness) associated with the ridge patterns are believed to be square arrays; thick heptalamellar structures (about 16-17 nm in overall thickness) with a narrow gap in between the two central laminae are believed to be gap junctions. This study strongly suggests that square arrays are specifically involved in ridge formation in human lens fibers.  相似文献

It is commonly believed that in humans epidermal ridge patterns are in regression relative to nonhuman primates, and they play no role in adaptive processes. In contrast with this we have found relationships between anthropometric and dermatoglyphic measurements in a sample of 61 normal males. Anthropometric variables included limb, trunk, head, and face measures. Dermatoglyphic variables included finger ridge counts and pattern intensities and ridge breadth in the palmar interdigital area II. The strongest relationship is between the type and size of pattern on the thumb and the breadth of ridges, and wrist width, which accounts for nearly 30% of the total variance in these traits. These findings identify previously unknown sources of variation in dermatoglyphic patterns and indicate that the dermatoglyphic-anthropometric relationships might have resulted from selection pressures in evolution of modern man.  相似文献

Planar cell polarity (PCP) describes the orientation of a cell within the plane of an epithelial cell layer. During tissue development, epithelial cells normally align their PCP so that they face in the same direction. This alignment allows cells to move in a common direction, or to generate structures with a common orientation. A classic system for studying the coordination of epithelial PCP is the developing Drosophila wing. The alignment of epithelial PCP during pupal wing development allows the production of an array of cell hairs that point towards the wing tip. Multiple studies have established that the Frizzled (Fz) PCP signaling pathway coordinates wing PCP. Recently, we have found that the same pathway also controls the formation of ridges on the Drosophila wing membrane. However, in contrast to hair polarity, ridge orientation differs between the anterior and posterior wing. How can the Fz PCP pathway generate a different relationship between hair and ridge orientation in different parts of the wing? In this Extra View article, we discuss membrane ridge development drawing upon our recent PLoS Genetics paper and other, published and unpublished, data. We also speculate upon how our findings impact the ongoing debate concerning the interaction of the Fz PCP and Fat/Dachsous pathways in the control of PCP.  相似文献

The younger Laetolil hominids provide evidence of a unique anterior cutting complex with a chisel-like action occurring between the lingual-distal C face and a transverse ridge on the P3 perpendicular to it, extending between the subequal cusps. An earlier adaptation to more efficient grinding may have resulted in reduced canine projection and the development of the lingual P3 cusp, raising the ridge between it and the buccal cusp. This development acted to retain the anterior cutting function by shifting it to the top of the premolar.  相似文献

Orbital hypertelorism may be associated with a variety of deformities affecting several elements of the craniofacial skeleton. Shortness of the central portion of the face represented by a wide, short nose and anterior open bite is frequently combined with the exaggerated interorbital distance. With the mobilization of the two halves of the face it is possible to approximate the orbits, simultaneously elongating the center of the face and normalizing the maxillary alveolar ridge. A technique is described to plan the operation geometrically in order to predict accurately the skeletal correction, the change of the inclination of the eye slant, and the modification of the axis of the teeth.  相似文献

Replicas of freeze-fractured toad urinary bladder and gallbladder were analysed in an attempt to determine the fracturing properties and structure of the zonula occludens (tight junction). Chalcroft and Bullivant have proposed that the junction has a double set of fibrils with one set associated with each of the adjacent cell membranes. However, the fracturing pattern that is observed might also result from only a single set of fibrils which is shared by the adjacent membranes if fracturing occurred around either side of the fibrils. These two models predict quite different structures at regions of the junction where tranl sitions are made between face A and face B. The relative heights of face A and face B and the shape of the transition from face A to face B do not agree with that expected according to the two fibril model but agree exactly with that expected if only a single set of fibrils existed. Further evidence for the single fibril model is derived from fractures of the mucosa membrane which cross the junction to the membrane of the adjacent cell without deflection. Such fractures reveal a single ridge which appears to be identical to the juxtaluminal fibril of the junction. In addition, small ridges are occasionally found in place of the grooves on face B which, although not consistent with the double fibril model, is expected if the single fibril model were correct. Although alternative explanations might account for these observations, we believe that the simplest and most consistent explanation is that the zonula occludens fractures as would be expected of a single set of fibrils shared by adjacent cells.  相似文献

Age changes in the pubic symphyses of 142 Cayo Santiago rhesus monkeys (known age, sex and maternal genealogy) are described. Symphyseal development is sexually dimorphic. Males generate a ridge and furrow system which is gradually replaced by a solid ankylosis at the mid-sagittal plane. Female development parallels that of the male until puberty. With pregnancy and delivery, relaxation and reaggregation of pelvic ligaments binding the symphysis destroy the symphyseal face. Continued bearing of offspring inhibits mid-sagittal ankylosis. Limited estimates of skeletal age can be made by using symphyseal development as an indicator of senescence.  相似文献

The ventral arc of the pubis is frequently used for sexing adult human hip bones. This study addresses the issues of the anatomical and developmental bases for the ventral arc. Dissection of seven adult pelves (four females and three males) demonstrates that the sexes are identical in the muscular and ligamentous attachments to this ridge of bone. The tendons of gracilis and adductor brevis, which are fused for a variable extent, arise from the ridge of bone, and the fibers of the ventral pubic ligament attach to its medial border. Lateral placement of the ventral arc is defined in terms of the minimum distance between the ridge of bone and the inferior border of the symphyseal face of the pubis. The hypothesis that lateral placement of the ventral arc is positively correlated with pubic length was tested using two random samples of adult female hip bones (N = 50 for both whites and blacks) from the Hamann-Todd collection. The correlation between these variables is significant. The results support the argument that lateral placement of the ventral arc is related to the amount of postadolescent growth occurring at the symphyseal border of the pubis. Therefore, the ventral arc should not be considered as an independent criterion from pubic length in sexing adult hip bones.  相似文献

Outgrowth of normal chick limb bud mesoderm is dependent on the presence of a specialized epithelium called the apical ectodermal ridge. This ectodermal ridge is induced by the mesoderm at about the time of limb bud formation. The limbless mutation in the chick affects apical ectodermal ridge formation in the limb buds of homozygotes. The initial formation of the limb bud appears to be unaffected by the mutation but no ridge develops and further outgrowth, which is normally dependent on the ridge, does not take place. As a result, limbless chicks develop without limbs. In the present study, which utilized a pre-limb-bud recombinant technique, limbless mesoderm induced an apical ectodermal ridge in grafted normal flank ectoderm. However, at stages when normal flank ectoderm is capable of responding to ridge induction, limbless flank ectoderm did not form a ridge or promote outgrowth of a limb in response to normal presumptive wing bud mesoderm. We conclude from this that the limbless mutation affects the ability of the ectoderm to form a ridge. In addition, because the limbless ectoderm has no morphological ridge and no apparent ridge activity (i.e. it does not stabilize limb elements in stage-18 limb bud mesoderm), the limbless mutant demonstrates that the initial formation of the limb bud is independent of apical ectodermal ridge activity.  相似文献

Rockycampacanthus milesi n.gen., n.sp. is described from a single jaw from the Rocky Camp member of Lower Devonian Buchan Group, E Victoria. Rockycampacanthus differs from other ischnacanthiforms in having large multicuspidate teeth with dual rows of secondary cusps forming a posteromesial flange, a mesial tooth row beginning opposite the fourth cusp of the main tooth row, and in the gnathal bone being deepest in the anterior half. Taemasacanthus erroli n. gen., n. sp. is described from several jaw bones from the Lower Devonian Murrumbidgee Group, New South Wales. Taemasacanthus has a well developed posterolabial flange with secondary cusps developed, vertical rows of denticles on the cusps of the main tooth row and a well developed mesial tooth row separated from the main row by a prominent ridge. The labial face of the jaw has a circular ridge which may have supported labial cartilages. The complex mandibular joint in climatiforms, acanthodiiforms and some primitive sharks differs from the simple jaw articulation of ischnacanthids. It is suggested that ischnacanthids are the plesiomorphic sister group to climatiforms plus acanthodiiforms. The interrelationships of ischnacanthids, climatiforms and acanthodiforms are discussed.  相似文献

The antennae of male bagworm moths were examined with the scanning electron microscope. More than 90% of the sensilla present are long, thin trichodea regularly arrayed along the anterior face of each pectination and presumably involved in locating females. Two shorter types of trichodea occur mostly along the anterior ridge of each pectination. At the tip of each pectination is a single chaeticum; a small number or similar chaetica are dispersed on the posterior, almost sensor‐free surface of each pectination. Sensors resembling both the styloconica and coeloconica of Noctuidae are present, mostly near the tip of each pectination. A single short, blunt peg set in an unusual bulbous base is closely associated with the chaeticum at the tip of each pectination.  相似文献

An SEM and TEM study revealed details of the development of the pronephros of Caretta caretta. The pronephros develops and degenerates over 13 days from day 7 to day 20 in embryos incubated at 33°C. Podocytes, with primary branches, secondary branches, and pedicles, on a basal lamina, can be seen from day 11, as can ciliated pronephric tubule ostia opening into the coelom. At this stage the embryo has four pharyngeal arches with unfused mandibular processes, and small fore-limb buds each with an apical ectodermal ridge. Maturation of the pronephros occurs between days 15 and 17. Degeneration begins around day 18 and is advanced by day 20 when the embryo has a fully developed face, fore-limbs with digits, and the carapace and plastron have formed.  相似文献

Local application of retinoic acid to wing buds of chick embryos leads to dose- and position-dependent changes in the pattern of cellular differentiation. Early effects of retinoid treatment on the apical ectodermal ridge coordinate pattern changes and morphogenesis. The length of the apical ridge increases when additional digits will form but decreases when digits are lost. These changes in length can be understood in terms of a threshold response to the local retinoid concentration that results in either disappearance or maintenance of the ridge (Lee & Tickle, J. Embryol. exp. Morph. 90, 139-169 (1985)). Here, we have analysed the mechanisms involved in ridge disappearance by locally applying retinoic acid to the apex of stage 20 chick wing buds. With this treatment regime, low doses give duplicated digit patterns and higher doses truncations. The height of the apical ridge is progressively reduced with increasing doses of retinoid and the time course of ridge flattening indicates that the height of the ridge is correlated with bud outgrowth. With high doses of retinoic acid, the typical ridge, a pseudostratified epithelium in which the columnar cells are tightly packed, disappears and the epithelium at the tip of the bud consists of loosely packed cuboidal cells. Shortly after treatment, there is a decrease in the number of gap junctions between ridge cells. This early change in cell contacts suggests that gap junctions may be involved in maintaining epithelial morphology. When treated epithelium is recombined with untreated mesenchyme, an apical ridge is reestablished and distal structures can be generated. In contrast, when treated mesenchyme is recombined with the epithelium from normal buds, only proximal structures are formed. Therefore, retinoids can lead to a reorganization of the apical ectodermal ridge which is mediated and maintained by the mesenchyme.  相似文献

Several ideas on how neural crest (NC) cell migration in bird embryos might be dependent on the physical qualities of the internal embryonic environment were studied. Contact guidance has been suggested to direct NC cells ventrally in the trunk, but this has been subject to doubt (see Newgreen and Erickson, 1986, Int. Rev. Cytol. 103, 118-119). On reexamination, in situ extracellular matrix (ECM) and cell processes on the medial face of the somites were found appropriately oriented for this function. In addition, tissue culture models of oriented ECM could induce orientation of NC cells which mimicked that observed in the embryo. It is concluded that in this situation, oriented structures contribute to directed migration of NC cells in vivo, but the mechanism of contact guidance (i.e., steric or adhesive guidance) could not be ascertained. Contact guidance, in the form of steric guidance, has also been suggested as limiting ventrad NC cell movement at the midbrain level due to an insurmountable ridge on the side of the midbrain. The presence of this ridge was confirmed but it is unlikely to be responsible for prevention of ventrad migration, because, although it subsides very rapidly, the cells still refuse to move ventrad, and because models of this ridge in vitro proved to be no obstacle to NC cells. NC cell migration is also described as being limited by gross space between other organs or tissues. In vitro, NC cells could penetrate Nucleopore filters with pore diameters of 0.86 micron or greater. Observation of cell-free spaces in embryos showed that these were almost all much larger than the minimum pore size established experimentally. It is therefore concluded that in general the dimensions of gross tissue spaces probably do not set important limits for NC cell migration, but that the dimensions of transiently distensible microspaces between ECM fibrils may be a critical physical parameter.  相似文献

A bioassay to test the ovipositional responses of the generalist herbivore, Epiphyas postvittana, was developed, and various non-chemical factors that influenced the laying, and number of eggs laid, by females were tested. In choice experiments using various models, surface texture was found to be an important factor influencing ovipositional behaviour, with females preferring to lay on smoother rather than rougher surfaces. Another surface texture feature that influenced oviposition was a raised wax ridge on a smooth surface. The wax ridge stimulated more eggs to be laid within close proximity to the ridge. Observations of females showed that the increased numbers of eggs laid on models with a wax ridge resulted not from increased landing, time spent, or numbers of eggs laid per ovipositional bout, but rather through an increased probability of ovipositing after landing on models with a wax ridge compared to models without the ridge. Spatial features of the models were also found to influence egglaying by females. Females showed a tendency to lay on the upper rather than the lower surface of models, although this appeared to depend upon how stimulatory the upper surface of the model was. Females also laid more eggs on models with a dense array of leaves than on models with a more spread-out array.  相似文献
