The spatial and temporal distributions of the epiphytic diatom flora on Thalassia testudinum was described within the Florida Bay estuary and at one Atlantic site east of the Florida Keys over a 1-year period. Species of the genus Mastogloia dominated the epiphytic diatom flora (82 out of 332 total species). Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) revealed four distinct spatial assemblages and two temporal assemblages. Eastern and western Florida Bay assemblages were identified within the estuary. The eastern diatom assemblage was characterized by high relative abundances of Brachysira aponina and Nitzschia liebetruthii, while the western assemblage was characterized by the abundance of Reimerothrix floridensis, particularly during summer. Two diverse and distinct marine assemblages, one located in the Gulf of Mexico along the western edge of Florida Bay and the other behind the Florida reef tract in the Atlantic Ocean, were also identified. Analysis of the spatial distribution of diatoms and water quality characteristics within Florida Bay suggest that these assemblages may be structured by salinity and nutrient availability, particularly P. The Gulf of Mexico and the western Florida Bay assemblages were associated with higher water column salinities and TP concentrations and lower DIN concentrations and TN:TP ratios relative to the eastern Florida Bay assemblage. The temporal variation in diatom assemblages was associated with water temperature, though temporal indicator species were few relative to the number of spatial indicators. Summary Competition for sites of attachment to hosts by three species of reptile tick, Aponomma hydrosauri, Amblyomma albolimbatum and Amb. limbatum was investigated as a possible cause for the parapatric distributions found in these species throughout southern Australia. Two localities were chosen for detailed study; a boundary between Ap. hydrosauri and Amb. limbatum near Mt. Mary in the mid-north of South Australia and a boundary between Ap. hydrosauri and Amb. albolimbatum near Arno Bay on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. Comparisons of sites of attachment to hosts were made between hosts infested by one species of tick and hosts infested by two species of tick. At Mt. Mary, Ap. hydrosauri and Amb. limbatum adults attach more commonly in the ears and on the midback of their hosts, however, no evidence was found to suggest that competition between the species occurred for these sites. At Arno Bay, Amb. albolimbatum adults had similar sites of attachment to hosts as the other two species, however, significantly more of this species attach in the ears of their hosts. There is no difference in sites of attachment to hosts of Ap. hydrosauri females at Arno Bay and Mt. Mary. Ap. hydrosauri males at Arno Bay, however, show a shift in sites of attachment to hosts away from those sites occupied by Amb. albolimbatum males and females. This shift occurs only in cases where Amb. albolimbatum did not infest the same host. Although the shift in male Ap. hydrosauri sites of attachment to hosts can be explained in terms of past competition, there is no evidence to suggest that such competition in the past, or competition at present, maintains the parapatric boundaries found in these species of thick.  相似文献

关键种(keystone species)在生态系统中发挥着不可替代的重要作用,对于群落结构的稳定与演替起着决定性的作用。基于2011年3—12月在海州湾及其邻近海域进行的渔业资源底拖网调查资料以及胃含物分析数据和参考历史文献数据,以物种间的摄食关系作为基础,采用SURF(Supportive Role to Fishery ecosystems)指数识别海州湾食物网中的关键饵料生物。在矩阵中分析每个物种作为饵料生物为捕食者提供的摄食比例及捕食者数量,计算每个物种的关键指标(SURFi)的值,结果表明前五位数值较高的物种是细鳌虾(Leptochela gracilis)、毛虾(Acetessp.)、疣背宽额虾(Latreutes planirostris)、日本鼓虾(Alpheus japonicus)和鳀鱼(Engraulis japonicus),它们是海州湾的关键饵料生物,在整个食物网中起到关键的控制作用,它们的数量波动会对海州湾其他物种产生直接或间接的影响。加强关键饵料生物的保护,对于维持海州湾生态系统的健康和稳定至关重要。  相似文献

There is a realization that managed forests and other natural areas in the landscape matrix can and must make significant contributions to biodiversity conservation. Often, however, there are no consistent baseline vegetation or wildlife data for assessing the status of biodiversity elements across protected and managed areas for conservation planning, nor is there a rapid and efficient means to acquire those data. We used a unified vegetation classification and simple animal sampling design to describe the patterns of abundance of selected mammals as indicator, or characteristic, species in different vegetation types and protected areas vs. managed forest units in the Terai Conservation Area (TCA) in northern Uttar Pradesh state, India. We quantified the relative abundance of 15 mammals of conservation concern from dung counts in vegetation sampling plots within 122 sample patches in 13 vegetation types and 4 management units. Assemblages of species differed both among vegetation types and among management units. Species assemblages in the two protected areas differed strongly from those in two managed forests. Grasslands in protected areas were the most species diverse among vegetation types and had several indicator species. Protected forests were dominated by chital (Axis axis) and nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) in a second species group. A third species group in open grasslands and savannas in managed forests was characterized by cattle (Bos taurus) and Indian hare (Lepus nigricollis). Protected areas clearly are the core conservation area of the TCA for their relatively high habitat value and species diversity, and their protected status minimizes human disturbance. Impacts of human use are high in managed forests, indicating their compromised value for biodiversity conservation. Our simple assessment methodology gives managers a simple way to assess the status of important mammals across landscape conservation units.  相似文献

The effects of metals and petroleum hydrocarbons on benthic marine diatom communities were assessed using a manipulative field experiment at Casey Station, Antarctica. Uncontaminated, metal contaminated, and petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sediments were deployed for 11 weeks during the 1999 austral summer. The treatments were deployed at three different locations: Brown Bay, which has elevated levels of anthropogenic contaminants, and two uncontaminated reference locations, O'Brien Bay and Sparkes Bay, the latter of which has naturally occurring high concentrations of some heavy metals. At each location, significant differences between the composition of diatom communities recruiting to control and petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated treatments were observed. Navicula directa (Smith) Ralfs occurred at lower abundances in the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated treatments than in the control treatments. In contrast, Navicula cancellata Donkin occurred at higher relative abundances in both contaminated treatments relative to the control treatment. Interactions between treatment and location were also observed for several species, including Navicula glaciei Van Heurck. Significant differences in the overall community composition of diatom communities between control and metal contaminated treatments and metal contaminated and petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated treatments were only observed within Brown Bay. The location of deployment also had a significant influence on the composition of diatom communities. Brown Bay had higher abundances of Achnanthes brevipes Agardh but lower abundances of Navicula aff. cincta (Ehrenberg) Van Heurck than either reference locations. This experiment demonstrated that benthic diatom communities are sensitive to sediment contamination and would be suitable for future monitoring work within this and other areas of Antarctica.  相似文献

Morphological and RAPD markers were used to assess the relationships among nodulating and non-nodulating species of AfricanAcacia. Non-nodulating species of AfricanAcacia are only found within subg.Aculeiferum sect.Monacanthea. African species of sect.Monacanthea examined were found to form a group distinct from the other African species examined on a morphological and molecular basis. All lack the ability to nodulate, suggesting that non-nodulation may be used as a taxonomic tool. The species of sect.Aculeiferum were separated by RAPD and morphological analysis into two groups depending on whether they were armed with prickles in pairs and/or prickles in threes, or solitary. A third group of species was identified within sect.Acacia: further subdivision of this group was achieved into subsectt.Pluriseriae andUniseriae. The position ofA. albida relative to other AfricanAcacia species was found to be distinct but not totally independent of the genus. The partitioning and distribution of the genetic variability within the genus is further elucidated by the RAPD analysis of populations ofAcacia species. A population analysis ofA. polyacantha demonstrated geographical and site-specific variation.  相似文献

Preliminary studies on eutrophication and red tide problems in Bohai Bay   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
A study was carried out in 1978–1981 on the relationship between eutrophication and the occurrence of red tides in Bohai Bay.An assessment method using a single parameter as well as the multiparameter Trophic State Index was adopted. DIN, DIP, COD loadings and concentrations and phytoplankton community (species composition, diversity index, standing crop, chlorophyll a and primary productivity) were used as parameters. The western part of the bay and two sewage outfall sites showed the highest values of chlorophyll a, nitrate, phosphate, standing crop, primary productivity and the greatest population instability. Therefore, Bohai Bay, can be regarded as mesotrophic, but its estuary eutrophic. Anthropogenic factors are mainly responsible for its eutrophication. A relationship between environmental factors and red tide species was found. Noctiluca miliaris, Prorocentrum minimum and Skeletonema costatum have their bloom periods from July to September and are the most significant species.  相似文献

We studied the vagile epibenthic and nektonic macrofauna and hydrographic environments of the Saco River estuary and adjacent waters, including Biddeford Pool lagoon and Saco Bay (Gulf of Maine), over a 3-year period (1979–82). Twice as many species of vagile macrofauna were found in Saco Bay as in the estuarine environments, and none were found at the head of the estuary below the dam. Field distributions of various species and life stages agreed with their locomotor responses in the laboratory to physicochemical gradients, supporting the view that habitat correlations are at least in part determined by active habitat preference and/oor avoidance behavior of vagile species. We also examined the stomach contents of specimens of two common fish species to determine their local feeding habits. Yearling Pollachius virens fed primarily on Ammodytes americanus, while yearling Pseudopleuronectes americanus stomachs contained primarily small, whole Echinarachnius parma.  相似文献

This study used a network of acoustic receivers deployed around a no‐take zone in Mangrove Bay, within the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park in Western Australia, to study residency and habitat preference of a small coastal shark, the nervous shark Carcharhinus cautus. Twelve C. cautus were tagged with acoustic tags and monitored for up to 579 days. Based on individuals detected within the receiver array for at least 2 months, C. cautus had small core (50% kernel utilization distribution, KUD) and home ranges (95% KUD) of 0·66 and 3·64 km2, respectively, and showed a strong habitat preference for mangroves, which are only found in the no‐take zone. This resulted in C. cautus spending most of their detected time within the no‐take zone boundaries (mean = 81·5%), showing that such a protected area could be beneficial to protect this species from extensive fishing pressure and local depletion, where required. Not all C. cautus remained within the acoustic array, however, suggesting that individual variations occur and that not all individuals would benefit from such protection. This study provides important information about the habitat, residency and movements of C. cautus that can be used for management and conservation. The strong affinity and residency of C. cautus within a mangrove‐fringing coastline, emphasizes the importance of mangrove habitat to the species and suggests that such preferences can be used to design appropriate no‐take zones for this species or others with similar habitat preferences.  相似文献

To examine species composition and population structures in sand lance (Ammodytidae) along the northern Pacific coast of Japan, genetic analysis were carried out for specimens collected in 2014 from Otsuchi Bay, Iwate, Ishinomaki Bay, Miyagi, off Soma, Fukushima and Ise–Mikawa Bays, Aichi. The samples consisted of Ammodytes japonicus and Ammodytes heian, of which the latter is a recently described species. Neither species exhibited significant genetic differences among localities. Only A. japonicus was found in the most southern locality at Aichi, but it decreased northward to <90% in Miyagi and Fukushima and the two species occurred almost evenly in Iwate suggesting a latitudinal cline in their species composition along the northern Pacific coast of Japan, off Tohoku. The vertebral counts differed between A. japonicus and A. heian with modes of 65 and 63, respectively, but this characteristic did not differ significantly within a locality (Iwate). This suggests that the vertebral counts of Ammodytes spp. in Japanese waters are probably strongly determined by the environment than by a species‐specific genetic trait.  相似文献

Synopsis In immature and adult females of protogynous gobies, small distinctive masses of cells associated with the ovarian wall develop into testis-associated glandular structures during sex change. These precursive accessory gonadal structures, or pAGS, have been found in females of known protogynous goby species, but not among gonochoric goby species, suggesting that their presence can be used as a species-specific indicator of protogyny within the family. However, a detailed examination of a developmental series of ovaries in two gonochoric species,Gobiosoma illecebrosum andG. saucrum, revealed the presence of a gonadal feature previously thought to be restricted to protogynous gobies. Among immature females of both species, pAGS-like structures having a similar appearance and placement as functional pAGS of protogynous gobies were found. In femaleG. illecebrosum, the size of these structures among immatures progressively decreased with maturation and were absent in all but the smallest adult females. A similar pattern was evident in a small sample ofG. saucrum. Population demography based on field collections showed thatG. illecebrosum exhibits sex ratios and male and female size-frequency distributions typical of gonochores and laboratory experiments indicated that final sexual identity was unaffected by social environment during the juvenile period. Thus, the presence of pAGS in juvenile femaleG. illecebrosum is not related to an ability to change sex at that ontogenic interval. Whether the transient pAGS observed here are vestiges of an ancestral protogynous condition is unknown. Based on their presence among immatures in two gonochore gobies, however, only the presence of pAGS in adult females should be used to predict protogyny among gobies.  相似文献

Previous studies established the existence of morphologically highly similar amphiatlantic populations of the predominantly interstitial genus Microphthatmus (European coastline - from the German Bay to the Bay of Biscaya; American coastline - from Maine to Massachusetts and at the coast of North Carolina). Originally these three populations were seen as belonging to a single species. By using a broad spectrum of different methodologies for character investigations (especially through the use of electron microscopy) three, distinct species can now be distinguished: M. listensis Westheide 1967, M. nahantensis n. sp. and M. carolinensis n. sp. While habitat structure and external morphology - generally important in polychaete systematics - were found to be rather similar between the three species, this study uncovered distinct differences between the species in their internal organization. Such sharp differences could even be followed down to the ultrastructure of single cells (e. g. copulatory stylets, position and number of ovaries, sperm and secretory granules of male accessory glands). Within population character variability is significantly lower in several features of M. carolinensis than in the same characters of the other two species. Similarities as well as differences have been noted in behavioural features and population dynamics between the species.  相似文献

Ascomycetous fungi play an important role in the early stages of decomposition of Spartina alterniflora, but their role in the decomposition of other Spartina species has not been investigated. Here we use fingerprint (terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism) and phylogenetic analyses of the 18S to 28S internal transcribed spacer region to compare the composition of the ascomycete fungal communities on early decay blades of Spartina species (Spartina alterniflora, Spartina densiflora, Spartina foliosa, and a hybrid (S. alterniflora × S. foliosa)) collected from three salt marshes in San Francisco Bay and one in Tomales Bay, California, USA. Phaeosphaeria spartinicola was found on all samples collected and was often dominant. Two other ascomycetes, Phaeosphaeria halima and Mycosphaerella sp. strain 2, were also common. These three species are the same ascomycetes previously identified as the dominant fungal decomposers on S. alterniflora on the east coast. Ascomycetes appeared to exhibit varying degrees of host specificity, demonstrated by grouping patterns on phylogenetic trees. Neither the exotic S. alterniflora nor the hybrid supported fungal flora different from that of the native S. foliosa. However, S. densiflora had a significantly different fungal community than the other species, and hosted at least two unique ascomycetes. Significant differences in the fungal decomposer communities were also detected within species (two clones of S. foliosa), but these were minor and may be due to morphological differences among the plants.  相似文献

To reconsider whether toxin profile could be used as a marker for populations from different geographical areas, clonal isolates of the toxic dinoflagellates Alexandrium tamarense (Lebour) Balech and Alexandrium catenella (Whedon et Kofoid) Balech from Ofunato Bay (Iwate Prefecture), Atsumi Bay (Aichi Prefecture), Tanabe Bay (Wakayama Prefecture), Harima‐Nada (Kagawa Prefecture), Uranouchi Bay (Kochi Prefecture), Hiroshima Bay (Hiroshima Prefecture) and Yamakawa Bay (Kagoshima Prefecture), which were identified on the basis of morphotaxonomy, immunological and molecular biological techniques, were subjected to analysis of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins by high performance liquid chromatography‐fluorometric method. All the isolates except A. tamarense OF152 from Ofunato Bay contained mainly N‐sulfocarbamoyl toxins (C1 +2) with various amounts of derivatives, and a typical north‐to‐south trend of decreasing toxicity was observed. In both A. tamarense and A. catenella, toxin profiles were rather constant within a geographical area and divergent among different geographical areas. The toxin profiles of A. tamarense from Harima‐Nada were well conserved among different bloom years. Toxin profile showed that isolates of A. tamarense from Ofunato Bay, A. tamarense from Harima‐Nada isolated in 1988 and A. catenella from Uranouchi Bay were heterogeneous. However, only two or three groups of isolates with different toxin profiles were observed in a geographical region, suggesting that several representative isolates express the genotype in a given region. These observations confirmed that toxin composition could be used as a marker to discriminate different geographical populations of these species.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen affect elasmobranch distribution and abundance in Tomales Bay, California, with monthly longline samples over a 20 month period. We used a Poisson regression under generalized least squares and found that temperature and salinity were the most important factors determining the distribution and abundance of the three most common elasmobranch species, bat ray, Myliobatis californica, leopard shark, Triakis semifasciata, and brown smoothhound shark, Mustelis henlei. Females of all three species were more abundant than males throughout the Bay, and were most abundant in the warmer, more saline inner bay. All three species apparently left Tomales Bay in late fall as water temperatures in the bay decreased to <10–12° C, and returned in early spring after temperatures increased to > 10° C. Three of 257 bat rays tagged in Tomales Bay were recaptured, all within 1km of their tagging location despite having been free for up to 583d.  相似文献

The species composition of the herbaceous layer was surveyed in eight plant communities with a small-quadrat method. Ordination techniques were applied to these data to identify relative homogenous grazing areas, assess the veld condition of each unit and to identify indicator species, based on a grazing gradient. Five relative homogenous grazing areas were identified and should be treated as such for management purposes. The veld in the Nylsvlei Nature Reserve was generally in a good condition due to the low stocking densities of game (≈0.29 animals ha?1) which have been maintained for many years. Nine indicator species, i.e. Cynodon dactylon, Digitaria eriantha, Ischaemum afrum, Leersia hexandra, Oryza longistaminata, Setaria sphacelata, Sporobolus ioclados, Sporobolus pyramidalis, and forbs, were identified which may be used for future monitoring of veld condition in the different vegetation units.  相似文献

Thirty-nine subgeneric taxa of macroalgae have been collected from 83 sites in Georgian Bay, the North Channel and their drainage basin. There were 15 species in the Bay and Channel and 32 species in streams, rivers and impoundments in the basin. Only 8 of the Bay and Channel species were also found in the watershed. Cladophora glomerata was the most important species in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, having an estimated 640 × 103 m2 cover and 19 × 104 kg fresh weight standing crop. However, this species was largely concentrated on the southwestern shorelines of these water bodies. Its distribution along the northeastern shoreline appears to be limited by total ion and phosphorus levels. Chara globularis/vulgaris was the subdominant taxon in Georgian Bay and the North Channel with an estimated 70 × 103 m2 cover and 15 × 103 kg fresh weight biomass. This species was more widely distributed than C. glomerata. No other taxon contributed significantly to the standing crop including the frequently occurring Ulothrix zonata, Zygnema spp. and Spirogyra spp. The maximum benthic macroalgal biomass was estimated to be approximately 10% of the phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Many shorebirds exhibit within‐ and among‐year site fidelity during their annual cycle. Little is known, however, about the migration ecology of Red Knots (Calidris canutus) that migrate along the Pacific Flyway and occur in Washington in numbers that exceed counts elsewhere on the flyway. At two large estuaries in coastal Washington, Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay, we searched for and recorded the locations of Red Knots (N= 547) that had been individually marked with leg flags at their wintering grounds in Baja California Sur, Mexico, during the period from October 2006 to April 2009. In 2010, we resighted 43 Red Knots at Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay that had been observed at these sites in previous years, primarily in 2009. We found a high degree of site fidelity between years, with birds observed in 2010 more likely to return to the same stopover site used in 2009 than to switch stopover sites. For knots that did not switch estuaries between years, the median nearest distance between locations where individuals were observed between years was 1.4 km at Grays Harbor and 0.6 km at Willapa Bay. Our results provide the first evidence of stopover site fidelity by Red Knots of the roselaari subspecies. Fidelity occurred at three spatial scales: coastal Washington, the two estuaries where we conducted our study, and specific mudflat areas within the estuaries. Because our study sites support high populations of bivalves, Red Knots may be returning to the same areas in subsequent years to exploit what we suspect is a predictable food resource. The abundance of Red Knots and high degree of site fidelity suggest that our study sites in Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay are important for the conservation of this species on the Pacific Flyway.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the Neotropical members of genus Lepidocyrtus was conducted to assess the pattern of speciation in Puerto Rico while testing the phylogenetic information content of two characters used to diagnose subgenera. The analysis included twenty‐two species of Lepidocyrtus from the Neotropical Region for which information on the tergal chaetotaxy of the trunk was available, two species of Holarctic Lepidocyrtus, three species of Pseudosinella, two species of Metasinella used in outgroup analysis and ninety‐two informative characters. The results do not support a monophyletic origin for the Puerto Rican Lepidocyrtus, suggesting the current fauna originated through repeated invasions from abroad. Three instances of endemic speciation can be inferred from the cladograms. The geographical distribution and diversity of colour forms suggest that L. caprilesi and L. paracaprilesi speciated sympatrically, whereas vicariance can explain speciation for L. lepargus and L. maldonadoi. The mode of speciation for L. dispar and L. biphasis remains unclear because the proportion of morphological variation between these species does not fit the proportions expected under the sympatric model suggested by their geographical distribution. The results support an early conclusion regarding appendicular scale distribution as a poor indicator of phylogenetic relationships. Taxa defined using this character are likely to be polyphyletic. The results disagree with a previous study in documenting low levels of homoplasy for the dental tubercle, implying that this character contains phylogenetic information useful in defining subgenera. However, the presence or absence of a dental tubercle is not diagnostic and should be used in combination with other characters. Comparisons of levels of homoplasy in Neotropical and Hawaiian Lepidocyrtus suggest that the relative position of two setae on the second abdominal tergum may be a better subgeneric character than other characters currently in use.  相似文献

A floristic survey has been carried out in a peri-urban forest, the Sonian Forest in Brussels, to identify indicator plant species in the herbaceous layer, which could be used as an aid within the framework of a more sustainable management of the forest. Three hundred and seventy two (372) taxa have been identified, 33 of which are non-native (i.e. non-indigenous species regarding the study area, whether invasive or not). Criteria of habitat quality that have been chosen are the species richness, the commonness of the habitat, based on constitutive species, and its invasibility (vulnerability for invasion). On the basis of a comparison of the value of these criteria when each considered (potential indicator) species is present or not, 17 species have been recognised as reliable indicators of at least one of these three criteria. In particular, vegetation types containing either Anthriscus sylvestris, Galeopsis tetrahit or Senecio ovatus were found to be more susceptible to invasion than other habitats. The way to how the predictability of invasions might be effectively used as a management tool is discussed. Furthermore, we found a positive significant correlation (Bonferroni corrected probabilities) between the species richness and luminosity factor (derived from Ellenberg's indices), and the proportion of grassland and wetland species. The species richness was significantly negatively correlated with the proportion of woodland species. An increase in commonness was significantly correlated with a decrease in the proportion of geophytes. The usefulness of these results as an ecological basis for forest management is discussed.  相似文献
