In A. vulgare sex is usually determined either by a cytoplasmic feminizing factor (F symbiotic bacteria) or by another feminizing factor (f) which behaves like a mobile element of DNA and which seems to correspond to a fragment of bacterial DNA. By inhibiting the expression of male genes carried by the Z heterochromosome, these feminizing factors induce differentiation of neo-females [ZZ(+F) or ZZ(+f)]. Such a mechanism leads to the production of progenies whose sex ratio is highly female biased. In some populations in which F and/or f factors are present, genetic females (WZ) have disappeared and all individuals (males and females) are genetic males. However in other populations, cohabitation of ZZ(+f) neo-females and females in all points similar to genetic females is observed. Such a situation may be unstable and is not likely to be explainable only by migrations of individuals from distinct populations. Owing to certain types of crosses, in particular those which involve an artificial neo-male ( = female reversed into a functional male by an implant of androgenic gland) we show here that the f factor can be transmitted as a Mendelian gene. In these progenies ZfZ females may appear: like WZ females, they breed broods whose sex ratio is unbiased. The hypothesis that the “F bacteria—A. vulgare” symbiosis may have led, after a complex co-evolutive process (F bacteria → f mobile element → insertion of f on Z heterochromosome), to the creation (from a male genotype) of a female genotype, is put forward. The consequences of such a phenomenon on the composition and the evolution of A. vulgare populations are examined.  相似文献

A male-specific amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker was identified in the functionally dioecious fig species, Ficus fulva. A total of 89 polymorphic fragments from three primer combinations were produced, of which one (246 bp) was present in all males (n=23) and absent in all females (n=24) of two populations. This strong association suggests a tight chromosomal linkage between the AFLP marker and the sex-controlling locus. Further analysis indicated that the marker segregated in open-pollinated progenies from natural populations in a 1:1 ratio (n=156), implying that males are the heterogametic sex. Chromosome preparations showed no evidence for morphologically distinct sex chromosomes. The low frequencies of associated markers argue against a morphologically cryptic non-recombining sex chromosome. The sex-locus is therefore likely to be autosomal. The male-specific AFLP marker was sequenced and converted into a sequence characterised amplified region (SCAR) marker. This SCAR marker produced a fragment of equal size in males and females, suggesting that sequence divergence between male- and female-specific chromosomal regions is low.Publication 3311 NIOO-KNAW Netherlands Institute of Ecology  相似文献

Background  

In species with single locus complementary sex determination (sl-CSD), the sex of individuals depends on their genotype at one single locus with multiple alleles. Haploid individuals are always males. Diploid individuals are females when heterozygous, but males when homozygous at the sex-determining locus. Diploid males are typically unviable or effectively sterile, hence imposing a genetic load on populations. Diploid males are produced from matings of partners that share an allele at the sex-determining locus. The lower the allelic diversity at the sex-determining locus, the more diploid males are produced, ultimately impairing the growth of populations and jeopardizing their persistence. The gregarious endoparasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata is one of only two known species with sl-CSD and fertile diploid males.  相似文献

Little is known about variation of sex ratio, the proportion of males to females, in natural populations of seaweed, though it is a major determinant of the mating system. The observation of sexual chromosomes in kelps suggested that sex is partly genetically determined. However, it is probably not purely genetic since the sex ratio can be modified by environmental factors such as salinity or temperature. In this paper, sex ratio variation was studied in the kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory complex, recently identified as two cryptic species occurring along the Chilean coast: one located north and the other south of the biogeographic boundary at latitude 29°–30° S. The life cycle of L. nigrescens is characterized by an alternation of microscopic haploid gametophytic individuals and large macroscopic fronds of diploid sporophytes. The sex ratio was recorded in progenies from 241 sporophytic individuals collected from 13 populations distributed along the Chilean coast in order (i) to examine the effect of an environmental gradient coupled with latitude, and (ii) to compare marginal populations to central populations of the two species. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that the sex ratios of the two cryptic species would be affected differently by temperature. First, our results demonstrate that sex ratio seems to be mainly genetically determined and temperature can significantly modify it. Populations of the northern species showed a lower frequency of males at 14°C than at 10°C, whereas populations of the southern species showed the opposite pattern. Second, both species displayed an increased variation in sex ratio at the range limits. This greater variation at the margins could be due either to differential mortality between sexes or to geographic parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction).  相似文献

A nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) was found to be widespread throughout the distribution of the light-brown apple moth (LBAM), Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), in southeastern Australia. Tests were done on sample cohorts drawn from laboratory strains and field populations to determine whether (i)susceptibility to NPV varied significantly in LBAM; and (ii) responses which exposure to the virus was known to elicit in the CAN Laboratory Strain (Geier & Oswald 1977) could be regarded as typical of the species. It was shown that discrete breeding groups could differ greatly in the relative mortality which they sustained following similar exposures to NPV. Whereas more females died than males in all virus-treated cohorts, as had been previously established in the CAN Strain, the demographic impairment typical of many individuals surviving exposure to NPV in that very tolerant strain (reduced weight of females, reduced fecundity and fertility) was not generally manifest in more susceptible forms of the species. Field surveys so far have not been detailed enough to reveal distribution patterns in the host-pathogen relationship. The epidemiology of the virus is unknown and its role in the life system of LBAM is not understood.  相似文献

Macrozamia communis is a common cycad that occurs in eastern New South Wales, Australia, where it forms an understory in various forest or woodland communities. Leaf number of reproductive individuals as well as of nonreproductive ones, taken as an indication of size class, varies clinally from north to south, with reproductive individuals in southern populations having mean leaf numbers about 12 times greater than those at the northern end of the range of this species. Female cone size and mature ovule weight appear to vary also along this gradient. Using leaf number as a predictor of sexual maturity, from 37 to 100% of the individuals present in a population were judged to be mature. The percent of mature individuals participating in the 1987 coning episode ranged from none in three southern populations to 68% elsewhere. In 9 of 10 samples more males than females participated in the 1987 coning episode, with a collective sex ratio slightly male biased for all populations sampled. In three population samples average cone numbers for male and female plants were equal. In two samples males produced more cones per plant than females. Leaf numbers of males and females in individual populations were equal. Few individuals producing cones in 1987 showed evidence of recent prior cone production, suggesting that successive cone production by both sexes is separated by an interval of several years. The periodicity with which fire is used as a fire suppression method may affect the frequency of cone production in some populations, perhaps preventing it entirely. The apparent absence of recruitment in some populations may result from long-term seed collection by humans for horticultural purposes as well as the very poor seed dispersal that appears to characterize this cycad throughout its range. The weevil Tranes internatus was observed occupying the internal tissues of female cones; this insect may be involved in the pollination of M. communis.  相似文献

Mixed populations of the twospotted spider mite (TSM),Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and the Banks grass mite (BGM),Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), occur on corn and sorghum plants in late summer in the Great Plains. Interspecific matings between these arrhenotokous species occur readily in the laboratory but yield no female offspring. The effect of interspecific mating on female: male sex ratios was measured by examining the F1 progeny of females that mated with both heterospecific and conspecific males in no-choice situations. TSM females that mated first with BGM males and then with TSM males produced a smaller percentage of female offspring than TSM females that mated only with TSM males (43.1±5.8 and 78.9±2.8% females, respectively). Similarly, BGM females mated with heterospecific males and then with conspecific males produced fewer female offspring than females mated only with BGM males (55.7±5.2 and 77.5±2.5%, respectively). Lower female: male sex ratios were produced also by BGM females that mated with TSM males after first mating with conspecifics (62.4±3.4%). In mixed populations containing males of both species, females also produced lower female: male sex ratios, but these ratios were not as low as expected based on mating propensities and progeny sex ratios observed in no-choice tests. These data suggest that interspecific mating may substantially reduce female fitness in both mite species by reducing the output of female offspring, but in mixed populations this effect is mitigated by unidentified behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

When males of the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, are crossed to females of its close relative T. freemani, the sex ratio of the hybrids is female biased, owing in part to hybrid male mortality. Morphological abnormalities are also frequent in the surviving hybrid males, but not in the hybrid females. The finding that the heterogametic sex (male) is more adversely affected in interspecific crosses than the homogametic sex is consistent with Haldane's rule, which predicts that hybrid dysfunction should emerge as an indirect byproduct of divergent adaptation to differing environments. If so, environmental effects and genotype-by-environment interactions (GEI) should characterize the expression of Haldane's rule and interspecific hybrid traits in general. We used two wild-collected populations of T. castaneum (from Infantes, Spain, and Madagascar) to investigate the effects of environmental variation on the expression of Haldane's rule. Males from each population were mated to several T. freemani females and the half-sibling hybrid progenies were reared across a series of temperature regimes. For both populations, we found that hybrids raised at higher temperatures exhibited a more extreme expression of Haldane's rule: The hybrid sex ratios were more biased toward females and hybrid males had a much higher incidence of morphological abnormalities. The average response to temperature, the norm of reaction for Haldane's rule, varied between the two populations, and we found considerable and significant GEI for both hybrid traits within both populations. The evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed in the context of speciation arising as an indirect effect of local adaptation.  相似文献

Twenty five adult chimpanzee skeletons (Pan troglodytes verus) of known age and sex (15 females, 10 males) from a long‐term study site in Taï National Park, Cote d'Ivoire present new data on variation. These skeletons provide a rare opportunity to measure the cranium and postcranium from the same individuals. We compare measurements and indices of the Taï sample with those of relatively complete Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii skeletons from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Measurements of Pan paniscus are included as an outside comparison. The Taï and Gombe samples are analyzed by sex; combined sex samples are compared between the two groups, and the two sexes to each other. Taï females and males do not differ in most long bone lengths or in pelvic dimensions, but do differ significantly in cranial capacity, facial measurements, clavicle length, scapular breadth, and femur length. Gombe females and males differ significantly in some facial measurements and in scapular breadth. In combined sex samples, Taï individuals have lower cranial capacity, longer palate and mandible, and greater dimensions in the trunk and limb lengths. Taï females account for most of the variation; males differ from each other only in greater length of humerus and femur. The Taï skeletons provide new data for assessing individual variation and sexual dimorphism within and between populations and species. The combination of cranial and postcranial data provides a clearer picture of chimpanzee intraspecific and interspecific variation than can be gained from either data set alone. Species of Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera) typically reproduce by cyclical parthenogenesis, in which a period of all-female parthenogenetic reproduction is followed by sexual reproduction. Sex in Daphnia is determined by the environment, with factors such as temperature, photoperiod and crowding stimulating the production of males and sexual females. Previous studies on Daphnia pulex from temporary pond habitats demonstrated the coexistence of male-producing and non-male-producing (NMP) females, as determined under crowding in the laboratory. A strong genetic component to this sex allocation variation suggested that sex expression in D. pulex is better described as a result of genotype-environment interaction. The present study examined the switch from parthenogenetic to sexual reproduction in two temporary-pond populations of D. pulex. Both populations showed a very early investment in sexual reproduction, independent of population density, by producing males very soon after the populations were reestablished from resting eggs in the early spring. Approximately 40% of the initial broods were male. Additional evidence for gender specialization was obtained by observing the sex of two or three successive broods for 85 individual females. Fifty-eight females produced successive broods of females, 13 females produced successive broods of males and 14 females produced successive broods which included both male and female broods. Females that produced successive female broods under natural conditions included a higher frequency of NMP females compared to a random sample of females, confirming the existence of NMP females. Sexual females were observed in both populations after the first appearence of males, suggesting that the presence of males may stimulate the production of sexual females. For D. pulex populations in a temporary environment, there appears to be an increased emphasis on sexual reproduction and a decreased influence of the environment on sex determination, compared to Daphnia populations in more permanent habitats. Interspecific mating between the two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch, and the Banks grass mite,Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), was documented using laboratory populations. The incidence of mating betweenT. urticae males andO. pratensis females was 26.0%, while that for the reciprocal mating was 18.8%. The incidence of mating was affected by both male and female species. Such matings may have several important ecological consequences. Interspecific matings resulted in all-male progenies. Thus, progeny sex ratios may be distorted by misdirected mating behavior. In addition, heterospecific mating resulted in lower fecundity than conspecific matings in the two-spotted spider mite, although not in the Banks grass mite. Aerial dispersal behavior of the two-spotted spider mite was also affected. Under crowded conditions and deteriorating resource quality, female mites exhibit an aerial dispersal posture that helps them to become airborne, and allows them to disperse long distances. Forty-two percent ofT. urticae females that mated with conspecific males exhibited this dispersal behavior, compared to only 3.6% for virgin females. The incidence of aerial dispersal behavior for females that mated with heterospecific males was intermediate (27.3%). The effects of these behavioral alterations on male and female fitness may depend on the population structure and resource distribution.  相似文献

Summary B chromosomes are often considered genomic parasites. Paternal sex ratio (PSR) is an extreme example of a parasitic B chromosome in the parasitoid waspNasonia vitripennis. PSR is transmitted through the sperm of carrier males and destroys the other paternal chromosomes in early fertilized eggs. PSR disrupts the normal haplodiploid sex determination in this wasp by converting diploid (female) eggs into haploid (male) eggs that bear PSR. In this study I compare a number of phenotypic fitness aspects of PSR and standard (non-PSR) males. In general, PSR males were as fit as standard males. No significant differences were found in longevity (with one exception), ability to compete for mates and sperm depletion rates. PSR males produced 11–22% larger family sizes and developed slightly faster than standard males. Under conditions of sperm competition, females who mated with both types of males fertilized a constant proportion of eggs with each sperm type over their lifetime. PSR males produced fewer offspring among progenies from double-inseminated females. Phenotypic fitness effects are believed to play a minor role in determining PSR frequencies in natural populations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the predictions of local mate competition (LMC), host quality (HQ) and operational sex ratio (OSR) models, using a non-arrhenotokous parasitic mite, Hemisarcoptes coccophagus (Astigmata: Hemisarcoptidae). The life-history pattern of this mite meets the assumptions of these sex allocation models. Mating group size (LMC model), HQ and OSR affected the sex allocation of H. coccophagus females. Only young mite females adjusted the sex ratio of their progenies according to the predictions of LMC and HQ models; the sex allocation of old females was contrary to these predictions. We explain these patterns by the dynamic nature of the mite's population structure. When parents are young, their population distribution is patchy and progeny matings are local; hence sex allocation is in accordance with LMC theory. When parents become older, their populations shift towards panmixis; factors which had operated previously no longer exist. Consequently, females adjust the sex ratio of late progenies so that it can compensate for the earlier sex allocation, in order to make their total sex ratio unbiased, as expected in panmictic populations. Our data, expressed as the cumulative sex ratio, support this hypothesis.  相似文献

性别分化是遗传学、进化生物学和生殖行为生态学研究的重要领域之一,对于研究生物的遗传与进化关系、分析生物种群数量动态具有重要意义。对韭菜迟眼蕈蚊BradysiaodoriphagaYangetZhang的性别分化研究结果表明,韭菜迟眼蕈蚊的生殖对策主要以产单性别方式为主,其次是产优势性别方式,2种方式占92%,且产雌产雄的比例基本呈对称现象。用雌雄试虫都来自单性别的种群,连续繁殖3代,其性别分化如同上述,每一代种群的性比基本保持在1∶1。用双性别后代雌虫所产的雌雄虫进行近亲繁殖,连续繁殖3代,结果表明双性别后代的比例明显增大。鉴于以上实验结果,对韭菜迟眼蕈蚊生殖对策的生态与进化意义进行了分析。  相似文献

Temperature and food supply appeared to affect sex ratio, sex composition and percentage of sexual individuals in three Hydra species: Hydra vulgaris, Hydra circumcincta and Hydra viridissima. We found three sexes present: females, males and hermaphrodites depending on environmental conditions. Hydra vulgaris appeared to be a species with a temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD). The males and hermaphrodites were present only under rising temperatures, whereas females were observed exclusively at lowering temperatures. Hydras reproduced asexually at constant room temperature. Unlimited food affected sex ratios and induced the presence of males in H. circumcincta at lowering temperatures. Thus, H. circumcincta may be recognised as another Hydra species in which sex is determined by environmental factors (ESD). Under rising temperatures, the number of hermaphroditic individuals was higher when food supply was unlimited in all three species, indicating that hermaphrodites may need more energy to produce both male and female gonads. Both temperature changes and food supply positively affected asexual reproductive strategies in hydras, especially budding rates. Hydra circumcincta appeared to be less agile than other hydras and able to self‐fertilise. It is likely that self‐fertilisation is an adaptation to the low probability of meeting a mate belonging to the other clone.  相似文献

 Population genetic structure was studied in one nearshore and two offshore populations of Stichopus chloronotus, a common holothurian species on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Genetic variation at five polymorphic loci was examined using allozyme electrophoresis. The nearshore population consisted almost exclusively of male individuals, and more males than females were found in all populations studied. Deviations of heterozygosity from that predicted under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium indicated that asexual reproduction occurred in all populations. Estimates of the level of asexual reproduction using the ratios of the number of sexually produced individuals to sample size, observed genotypic diversity to expected genotypic diversity, and number of genotypes to sample size confirmed that this reproductive mode was more important at the nearshore reef compared to the two offshore reefs. There were large differences in genotypic frequencies between males and females. F-statistics on clonal genotypic frequencies were not statistically significant between populations for neither females or males, suggesting high dispersal of larvae between reefs. A higher mortality of females during larval or early post-settlement stages, or reduced dispersal capability of female larvae are the most likely reasons for biased sex ratios.  In haplodiploid organisms such as parasitic wasps, substantial oviposition by females without sperm is predicted to cause mated females to bias their offspring sex ratios towards daughters. The effect of the production of sons by unmated and sperm-depleted (constrained) females on sex allocation by mated females was studied in two populations of the parasitic wasp Bracon hebetor over 3 years. B. hebetor females who depleted their sperm reserves from prior matings rarely remated and became constrained to produce only sons. Constrained females readily oviposited and produced clutches similar in size to those produced by mated females. Although the fraction of constrained females in the population varied considerably between sites and sampling dates, it was usually high enough to favor the production of female-biased sex ratios by mated females. Mated females consistently produced female-biased sex ratios. However, we found no evidence that the sex ratios produced by mated females from the field shifted in relation to the proportion of constrained females in the population. Females held with males or held in isolation also produced female-biased sex ratios. These findings suggest that, in B. hebetor, mated females produce sex ratios that reflect the average fraction of constrained females over evolutionary time. Oestrogenic wastewater treatment works (WwTW) effluents discharged into UK rivers have been shown to affect sexual development, including inducing intersex, in wild roach (Rutilus rutilus). This can result in a reduced breeding capability with potential population level impacts. In the absence of a sex probe for roach it has not been possible to confirm whether intersex fish in the wild arise from genetic males or females, or whether sex reversal occurs in the wild, as this condition can be induced experimentally in controlled exposures to WwTW effluents and a steroidal oestrogen. Using restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq), we identified a candidate for a genetic sex marker and validated this marker as a sex probe through PCR analyses of samples from wild roach populations from nonpolluted rivers. We also applied the sex marker to samples from roach exposed experimentally to oestrogen and oestrogenic effluents to confirm suspected phenotypic sex reversal from males to females in some treatments, and also that sex‐reversed males are able to breed as females. We then show, unequivocally, that intersex in wild roach populations results from feminisation of males, but find no strong evidence for complete sex reversal in wild roach at river sites contaminated with oestrogens. The discovered marker has utility for studies in roach on chemical effects, wild stock assessments, and reducing the number of fish used where only one sex is required for experimentation. Furthermore, we show that the marker can be applied nondestructively using a fin clip or skin swab, with animal welfare benefits.  相似文献

I studied proximal spacing within a group of woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha) during 7 months at Parque Nacional Tinigua, Colombia. I collected a total of 1188 instantaneous samples on focal individuals, recording the number and age/sex class of individuals that were in contact with, <2 m from, <5 m from the focal animal. The results indicate that proximate spacing reflects social affinities and is related to mother–infant relationship and social grooming. Subadult females and adult males are the sex/age classes with the lowest number of individuals in proximity. There are low proximity between adult females and between adult males and high frequencies of nearness between mother and offspring. Associations between males and females were usually low, but in some cases males showed preferences for a given female. There was a relatively gradual increase in spacing between mothers and their offspring as they became older. Old juvenile males were associated chiefly with other males—mostly subadults—whereas juvenile females maintained some proximity only to their mothers. There are also differences in spacing behavior according to different activity types.  相似文献

In D. affinis "sex ratio" (sr), a form of meiotic drive characterized by the production of mostly or only female progeny by certain males, is associated with two different X chromosome sequences, XS-I XL-II and XS-II XL-IV. The behavior of the two sequences differed, depending on the Y chromosome constitution, being either Y(L) or 0. Males with sequence XS-II XL-IV and Y(L) produced progenies with nearly normal sex ratios; males with the same X chromosome sequence but in the absence of a Y chromosome in some cases gave progenies with nearly normal sex ratios but in other cases gave progenies which tended toward phenotypic sr. Males with sequence XS-I XL-II and Y(L) gave progenies which were characteristically sr (0.97-0.98 females); in the absence of a Y chromosome males with this sequence produced progenies which were virtually all-male. This latter finding is presumably identical to Novitski's (1947) "male sex ratio" (msr). The interpretation offered here attributes msr to an interaction between sr sequence XS-I XL-II and the 0 condition.
