1. A growth model, originally developed for brown trout (Salmo trutta), has now been fitted to data for Atlantic salmon (S. salar) and stone‐loach (Barbatula barbatula) from English populations, and Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Sweden. The model relates growth rate to temperature for a fish of standard size and the functional relationship has a triangular shape with a sharp peak at the optimal temperature for growth and zero growth at the base of the triangle. It was unsuitable for growth data for Norwegian salmon, and a curvilinear Ratkowsky model provided a better fit, though the experimental protocol was different in the Norwegian and English experiments. 2. The Norwegian salmon were kept in groups in each tank, had to compete for food, and had to be divided into slow, moderate and fast growers before the Ratkowsky model could be fitted. Each English salmon was kept in its own tank and fed individually. For replicate experiments, fish of similar size were selected. Variation among fish kept under similar conditions was therefore small, and the triangular model was essentially for individual fish, not groups of fish. 3. The present simulation study tests the hypothesis that individual differences in the growth response could account for the curvilinear growth‐temperature relationship for the Norwegian salmon. The triangular model was used to generate the growth response to temperature for a group of salmon, each fish having a slightly different temperature preference and growth rate. The result was a curvilinear response, well approximated by the Ratkowsky model (adjusted R2 = 0.96). When the variability in individual temperature preference was increased, the Ratkowsky model was an even better fit (adjusted R2 = 0.98). Therefore, the apparent discrepancy between the two models was reconciled by allowing for individual differences in temperature preference and growth rate within groups of fish.  相似文献

In addition to the morphological and size characteristics of the spores, indicating the exact location and tissue specificity is also essential for differentiation of the large number of species belonging to the group of gill-parasitic fish, the myxosporeans. According to the observations of the present author, Myxobolus, Henneguya and Thelohanellus species are characterised by strict tissue specificity, and species showing affinity to the epithelium, connective tissue, cartilage or vascular tissue usually occur in a strictly defined location within the gill apparatus. Some of the species typically form plasmodia in the lamellae of the gill and others in the gill filaments. Yet other species develop their plasmodia at the base of the gill filament or in the gill arch. Instead of the generally accepted but misleading terms 'intra-' and 'interlamellar', the present author distinguishes interlamellar-epithelial and intralamellar-vascular types in the case of plasmodia developing in the gill lamellae, and intrafilamental-epithelial, intrafilamental-vascular and intrafilamental-chondroidal types in the case of plasmodia developing in the gill filaments. Regarding site of development within the gill, the location of basifilamental plasmodia and that of plasmodia developing in the cartilaginous matrix, connective tissue or blood vessels of the gill arch are well distinguishable from the above types. Tests of MHC-associated mating preference were conducted with the congenic mouse strains BALE (H-2 d), BALB.B (H-2 b), and BALB.HTG (recombinant ofH-2 d andH-2)b. It is generally assumed that butterflies, as is the case with many holometabolous insects, rely primarily on nutrients gathered by larval feeding for somatic maintenance and fecundity. These reserves can be supplemented by adult feeding and in some cases by nuptial gifts passed from the males to the females during mating. Recent findings indicate that female butterflies detect and prefer nectar with high levels of amino acids, thus calling new attention to this nutritive source. Polyandrous species can further supplement their larval stores with additional nuptial gifts. This study examined how mating frequency of the polyandrous butterfly Pieris napi affects the female's preference for nectar amino acids. Females of this species generally detect and prefer nectar mimics containing amino acids. However, nectar amino acid preference is significantly lower in mated females. Furthermore, nectar amino acid preference increases when females are not allowed to remate, whereas the preference of twice-mated females remains constant at a lower level. These results indicate a versatile response of females to nectar amino acids, depending on their nutritional status; they may even switch their source of amino acids between adult feeding and nuptial gifts.  相似文献

The Nile tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) has a high potential to be used as a model in neuroscience studies. In the present study, the preference of the Nile tilapia between a gravel-enriched (GEE), a shelter-enriched (SEE) or a non-enriched (NEE) environment was determined, for developing a place preference model. Nile tilapia had an initial preference for GEE, but after 1 day of observation, the fish stabilized their frequency of visits among compartments. Hence, any stimulus motivating tilapia increase in compartment visiting indicates a positively reinforcing effect. This feature is very useful for the development of new behavioural paradigms for fish in tests using environmental discrimination, such as the conditioning place preference test.  相似文献

Insight from theory has shown the usefulness of considering time lags in both plant and animal invasions, but this topic has yet to be fully explored with real examples. Here we define and investigate several types of lags using Red Sea fish invasions of the Mediterranean as a case study. By exploring both conceptual and analytical aspects of time lags, we suggest that this concept can be applied to both the ecology and management of invasions. Through the review of available literature and by compiling a comprehensive geo-referenced database, we show that our understanding of the temporal nature of invasion can be confounded by our varying capability to perceive it. This deep, sometimes inextricable, connection between the temporal nature of a process and its observation represents a critical issue for our understanding of the Lessepsian phenomenon, and is a challenge for invasion biology more generally. While our case study is associated with a very specific date in which the Suez Canal opened, our framework is expected to broaden the notion of time lags in bioinvasions research.  相似文献

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of fish sounds has been used as a means of detecting the presence and abundance of fishes. Prior to PAM, bioacoustical analyses of sounds are needed to characterize species-specific characteristics of calls. With hydrophones placed in outdoor ponds, we recorded the mating calls of three species of prochilodontid fishes (Prochilodus argenteus, P. costatus, P. lineatus). Fish were induced to spawn and call by injection of carp (Cyprinus carpio) pituitary gland extract. We recorded a total of 394 pulse train calls and additional single pulse calls that were not associated with trains. The trains of all three species were similar in nature - series of low frequency pulses that lasted from 1 to 11 s, often with an initial rapid rise followed by a slow tapering of pulse amplitude. Dominant frequency of single pulses and trains was greatest in P. lineatus, with P. costatus and P. argenteus exhibiting lower single pulse dominant frequencies, and P. costatus having lower train dominant frequency. With data from the three species combined, the dominant frequency of pulses significantly increased with fish standard length. There was also a significant linear relationship between the dominant frequency of pulses and trains. Discriminant function analysis showed that differences in train dominant frequency, pulse duration, and pulse period between the three species were significant enough to discriminate between them. This study was the first to fully characterize the sounds of these three Prochilodus species, and should assist fisheries biologists monitoring spawning behavior in these species.  相似文献

In asexual all-female species, such as the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, that depend on sperm from “host males” only to trigger embryogenesis, mate choice does not provide any indirect, genetic benefits to the choosing female, although direct benefits are possible. Asexual species are thought to have a low evolutionary potential or evolvability due to the absence of meiotic recombination. Hence, theory predicts that mating preferences in P. formosa for male ornaments—if existent—should resemble those of females of the two parental species (Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia mexicana) involved in the natural hybridization that gave rise to the asexual P. formosa. When examining the female preference for dummy males with or without black vertical bars in the two parental species and in two lineages of P. formosa, a preference was detected in P. latipinna, but not in P. mexicana females. Interestingly, P. formosa living syntopic with P. latipinna also preferred striped males, while others living syntopic with P. mexicana preferred non-striped males. The evolutionary significance of this phenomenon remains largely unexplained, but it might indicate the evolution of mating preferences in a species with low evolutionary potential. Possible mechanisms include introgression and mitotic gene conversion. Females might use male coloration as indicator mechanisms for male traits that matter in terms of direct benefits.  相似文献

The species, Pterophyllum scalare distinguishes itself by its breeding behavior, involving competition for territory, sexual partners, courtship and parental care. The purpose of this study was to identify the mating system adopted by this species of fish. Twenty males and twenty females were observed under semi-natural and experimental conditions to test the hypothesis of serial monogamy. Under semi-natural conditions, after the third breeding cycle, the couples changed mates. Under experimental conditions, the couples changed partners after the first breeding cycle. Under experimental conditions, mate recognition was investigated through the preference of the females, indicated by the time they spent with the males. The females were available or not for courtship from new males, depending on their aggressiveness or submission. The larger and more aggressive males obtained new mating opportunities while the submissive males were rejected by the females. The mated fish were aggressive towards intruders in the presence of the mate, protecting their pair bond. In the interval between breeding cycles, the couples did not display aggression towards intruders, confirming the hypothesis of serial monogamy. Best mate selection by the females and the opportunity of new matings for both sexes influenced the reproductive success of this species.  相似文献

Mating success tends to be skewed toward dominant males, thoughfemale mate preferences may not always correlate with male dominance.In this study, we investigated the mating preferences of femalezebrafish, Danio rerio, in the absence of male–male competition.We paired females sequentially with males of known dominancerank, using a nested, repeated measures design, with egg productionas a measure of female mate preference. We predicted that femaleswould spawn more frequently and produce larger clutches whenpaired with males of higher dominance rank. We found significantdifferences among females in the size of clutches produced andamong males in the size of clutches received, but these differenceswere independent of male dominance rank. Male body size wasnot related to either dominance rank or clutch size received.These results indicate that females vary clutch size in relationto the males with which they are paired but that they do notfavor dominant males. The assessment of risks associated with non-indigenous species implies a detailed knowledge of their taxonomical composition and distribution within a certain region. The northern branch of the central European ‘invasion corridor’—a series of canals connecting different watersheds—has formed an important migratory route for Ponto-Caspian fish (i.e. fish from the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Caspian Sea). However, the current status of non-indigenous fish species in this region is very scarce. This article presents a comprehensive overview of recent distribution data of non-indigenous fish species in the northern branch of the central European invasion corridor. Here, extensive data are integrated based on studies performed during 2003–2014 comprising reliable published and unpublished records from the last 12 years. Altogether, ten non-indigenous fish species were currently found in the northern branch of the central European invasion corridor, constituting 19 % of its freshwater fish diversity. Three species, including the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), and the Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii), are considered invasive species. Eight species may potentially invade this region in the near future. A comparison of the history of non-indigenous fish species introduction in the inland waters of the northern branch and other countries of the central European invasion corridor revealed similar introduction trends. Potential expansion of non-indigenous fish species across the central European invasion corridor has international implications that require awareness, cooperation, and government support from each individual country. Disclosure of recently operating vectors for non-indigenous fish introductions within the central European invasion corridor will help predict and prevent their further spread and establishment in this region.  相似文献

【目的】摸清惠州西湖鱼类群落组成和外来鱼类入侵现状。【方法】2023年2月,在惠州西湖主湖区开展鱼类资源调查,运用Jaccard相似性指数、相似性分析、非度量多维尺度排序法等方法分析外来鱼类物种组成、丰度差异、分布格局、群聚结构和群落相似性。【结果】共捕获鱼类21种,包括鲤、鲫和鲢等16种土著鱼类以及豹纹翼甲鲇、齐氏罗非鱼、尼罗罗非鱼、伽利略罗非鱼和露斯塔野鲮5种外来鱼类。外来鱼类质量和数量分别占总渔获物的45.36%和44.18%。豹纹翼甲鲇和齐氏罗非鱼在5种外来鱼类中质量和数量占比相对较高,表明外来种群资源量具有一定规模;相似性分析结果表明,西湖平均Jaccard相似性指数处于相似等级(数值为0.62),表明惠州西湖鱼类群落空间分布相似度高;聚类分析结果表明,在78.73%的相似性水平时,惠州西湖鱼类群落可分为4组,但它们之间的差异未达到生态学意义上的差异显著(P>0.05)。【结论】惠州西湖各站点鱼类群落较为相似,豹纹翼甲鲇和齐氏罗非鱼在各个站点均有出现,入侵较为严重,亟需采取相应的防控措施。  相似文献

Most fish are indeterminate growers with white muscle making up the majority of the acquired bulk. Within the muscle, the myofibrillar fraction accounts for almost two-thirds of the protein synthetic activity, implying that it is accretion of myofibrillar proteins that makes the single most important contribution to fish growth. Fish muscle growth itself is not linear and occurs through a combination of hyperplasia and hypertrophy in post-juvenile stages. Superimposed on periodicity of growth in length and mass can be other phases governed by lunar, reproductive or circannual cycles. Data on fish growth are discussed in the framework of site-specific muscle abundance, metabolic and functional zonation of muscle, proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells and the contribution of myofibrillar proteins. Hormonal control of muscle growth is described against the backdrop of plasma availability of myogens (insulin, IGF-I, growth hormone), distribution and dynamics of their respective receptors, and their interactions. Important contributions of the 'supply side' are discussed with hormones regulating amino acid resorption from the intestine, intestinal growth, liver processing and amino acid uptake by the muscle. Data are also interpreted from metabolic angles, to explain lipolytic and nitrogen-sparing effects of growth hormones, and lipogenic effects of insulin and high protein diets. Finally, special attention is devoted to the multifaceted roles of arginine in fish growth, as precursor, intermediate and hormone secretagogue.  相似文献

Vegetated habitats provide numerous benefits to nekton, including structural refuge from predators and food sources. However, the sensory mechanisms by which fishes locate these habitats remain unclear for many species, especially when environmental conditions (such as increased turbidity) are unfavorable for visual identification of habitats. Here, a series of laboratory experiments test whether three species of adult fish (golden topminnow Fundulus chrysotus Günther 1866, sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna Lesueur 1821, and western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis Baird and Girard 1853) use plant chemical cues to orient to one of two habitats [hydrilla Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle or water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms]. First, experiments in aquaria were conducted offering fish a choice of the two habitats to determine preference patterns. Next, a two-channel flume, with each side containing flow originating in one of the two habitats, was used to determine whether preferences were still exhibited when fish could only detect habitats through olfactory means. While patterns among the three fish species tested here were variable, results did indicate consistent habitat preferences despite the lack of cues other than olfactory, suggesting that these organisms are capable of discriminating habitats via chemical exudates from plants. As such, olfactory mechanisms likely provide vital information about the surrounding environment and future work should be directed at determining how anthropogenic inputs such as eutrophication and sediment runoff affect the physiology of these sensory capabilities.  相似文献

The study aimed at evaluating the ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations in the liver and blood of the Mediterranean sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) after being fed Rovimix Stay C‐25 (RS C‐25) at three different levels (0, 200 and 800 mg kg?1 of AA) over 45 days. RS C‐25 is a mixture of equal parts of AA monophosphate, diphosphate and polyphosphate, containing a 25% AA equivalent. Increasing RS C‐25 levels in the diet yielded an increasing ascorbic acid content in the plasma and liver, showing a good sea bream utilization of this source of vitamin C. Dietary vitamin C did not affect the growth rate or feed efficiency during the 45‐day experiment. After 75 days, fish fed a vitamin C‐free diet displayed a severe depletion of AA in the liver.  相似文献

Weakly electric fish communicate with brief electrostatic field pulses called electric organ discharges (EODs). EOD waveforms are sexually dimorphic in most genera, a condition thought to result from mate choice acting to shape the electric signal's constituent action potentials. We have no direct behavioural evidence that sexual selection by either mate choice or intrasexual competition is responsible for sex differences in the EOD waveforms of electric fish. We explored sexual selection in electric fish by conducting two-choice unforced preference tests with live, unaltered gymnotiform electric fish,Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus , which are sexually dimorphic. In the initial test, gravid females selected males over females only when the males were larger than average. Gravid females in later tests preferred larger males to smaller males in a significant majority of those trials in which they showed a preference. In about one-third of those trials, females spawned with their preferred male, confirming their preference. We concluded that passage through the choice apparatus was related to mate choice. The signals of chosen males had larger EOD amplitudes and longer EOD durations. These findings show that femaleB. pinnicaudatus do have a preference for a certain male phenotype. The system requires additional study to dissociate correlated male phenotypic characters to identify which male traits the female prefers.
