Age and growth of albacore Thunnus alalunga in the North Pacific Ocean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The age and growth of North Pacific albacore Thunnus alalunga were investigated using obliquely sectioned sagittal otoliths from samples of 126 females and 148 males. Otolith edge analysis indicated that the identified annulus in a sagittal otolith is primarily formed during the period from September to February. The assessments of the fish age at first annulus formation indicated that the first annulus represents an age of <1 year. This study presents an age estimate (0·75 years) for the formation of the first annulus. The oldest fish ages observed in this study were 10 years for females and 14 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of females estimated were L(∞) = 103·5 cm in fork length (L(F) ), K = 0·340 year(-1) and t(0) = -0·53 years, and the parameters of males were L(∞) = 114·0 cm, K = 0·253 year(-1) and t(0) = -1·01 years. Sexual size dimorphism between males and females seemed to occur after reaching sexual maturity. The coefficients of the power function for expressing the L(F) -mass relationship obtained from sex-pooled data were a = 2·964 × 10(-5) and b = 2·928.  相似文献

The life histories of two globally endangered hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini and Sphyrna mokarran, were examined using samples collected from a range of commercial fisheries operating along the east coast of Australia. The catch of S. lewini was heavily biased towards males, and there were significant differences in von Bertalanffy growth parameters (L(∞) and k) and maturity [stretched total length (L(ST)) and age (A) at which 50% are mature, L(ST50) and A(50)] between those caught in the tropics (L(∞) = 2119 mm, k = 0·163, L(ST50) = 1471 mm, A(50) = 5·7 years) and those caught in temperate waters (L(∞) = 3199 mm, k = 0·093, L(ST50) = 2043 mm, A(50) = 8·9 years). The best-fit estimates for a three-parameter von Bertalanffy growth curve fit to both sexes were L(∞) = 3312 mm, L(0) = 584 mm and k = 0·076. Males attained a maximum age of 21 years and grew to at least 2898 mm L(ST). The longevity, maximum length and maturity of females could not be estimated as mature animals could not be sourced from any fishery. Length at birth inferred from neonates with open umbilical scars was 465-563 mm L(ST). There was no significant difference in length and age at maturity of male and female S. mokarran, which reached 50% maturity at 2279 mm L(ST) and 8·3 years. Sphyrna mokarran grew at a similar rate to S. lewini and the best-fit estimates for a two-parameter von Bertalanffy equation fit to length-at-age data for sexes combined with an assumed mean length-at-birth of 700 mm were L(∞) = 4027 mm and k = 0·079. Females attained a maximum age of 39·1 years and grew to at least 4391 mm L(ST). The oldest male S. mokarran was 31·7 years old and 3691 mm L(ST). Validation of annual growth-band deposition in S. mokarran was achieved through a mark, tag and recapture study.  相似文献

The length frequencies and age structures of resident Pseudanthias rubrizonatus (n = 407), a small protogynous serranid, were measured at four isolated artificial structures on the continental shelf of north-western Australia between June and August 2008, to determine whether these structures supported full (complete size and age-structured) populations of this species. The artificial structures were located in depths between 82 and 135 m, and growth rates of juveniles and adults, and body condition of adults, were compared among structures to determine the effect of depth on potential production. All life-history stages, including recently settled juveniles, females and terminal males, of P. rubrizonatus were caught, ranging in standard length (L(s)) from 16·9 to 96·5 mm. Presumed ages estimated from whole and sectioned otoliths ranged between 22 days and 5 years, and parameter ±s.e. estimates of the von Bertalanffy growth model were L(∞) = 152 ± 34 mm, k = 0·15(±0·05) and t(0) = -1·15(±0·15). Estimated annual growth rates were similar between shallow and deep artificial structures; however, otolith lengths and recent growth of juveniles differed among individual structures, irrespective of depth. The artificial structures therefore sustained full populations of P. rubrizonatus, from recently settled juveniles through to adults; however, confirmation of the maximum age attainable for the species is required from natural populations. Depth placement of artificial reefs may not affect the production of fish species with naturally wide depth ranges.  相似文献

Information on size frequency distribution, the width-weight relation and growth parameters of the crabs Callinectes arcuatus and C. bellicosus is presented. The data comes from samples taken with a trawl net both day and night on a monthly basis from March 1998 to February 2000 in a coastal lagoon from Gulf of California. C. bellicosus (n=878) was more abundant than C. arcuatus (n=357) and its size frequency distribution presented carapace width CW ranges of 8.4-166 mm and 9-130 mm respectively. Both populations were mainly represented by juveniles (75 mm in CW) ranging from 37 to 75 mm in CW, and adults (>75 mm in CW) between 76 and 90 mm in CW. In both species the width-weight relation showed that males grow more than females, with an isometric growth tendency being observed. The growth parameters for C. arcuatus estimated using the von Bertalanffy Model, were: K = 0.84 year(-1), L infinity = 140 mm to = -0.12 for C. arcuatus, and K= 0.9 year(-1), L infinity = 169 mm to = -0.11 for C. bellicosus. These results showed that the relative age at which maximum growth is attained is between three and four years for both species.  相似文献

The growth rates of juvenile smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata collected in Florida waters between 1999 and 2006 were investigated using length-frequency and tag-recapture data. Stretched total length ( L ST) data from 144 smalltooth sawfish (690–4960 mm) and 28 recaptures (775–2150 mm) were used for the analyses. Both methods indicated that growth was rapid during the first 2 years after birth. The L ST increased by 650–850 mm in the first year, and by 480–680 mm in the second year. Data for animals >2200 mm were limited, so growth beyond 2 years of age was uncertain. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from L ST frequency data were L = 6000 mm, K = 0·140 year−1 and t 0=−0·863 years. Growth rates over the size range for which tag-recapture data were available were similar to that from L ST frequency data. The growth rates reported are substantially faster than those previously assumed for this species and may have important implications for the recovery of this endangered species. There are conflicting data regarding the growth rates of older P. pectinata which need to be resolved with more data from the wild population before a complete understanding of the conservation implications can be obtained.  相似文献

We provide a quantitative account of local movements in the monogamous Australian species Hippocampus whitei, as a rare report of home range size in fishes living in seagrass habitats. Our study took place in shallow Posidonia seagrass beds in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), principally during January to March. Daily monitoring of individual seahorses during underwater observations revealed that both sexes maintained small and apparently undefended home ranges for several breeding cycles at least. Female home ranges were significantly larger than males, when analysed by both the minimum convex polygon and grid cell methods. Home range size was not correlated with either body size or seahorse density. Presumably, home ranges were small in H. whitei because camouflage (to avoid predation and to capture prey), mate fidelity and parental brooding meant they accrued little benefit (and potentially considerable cost) from moving more extensively. Sex differences in home range size may arise from constraints associated with male pregnancy. These fish are among the most sedentary of vertebrates, with relatively small home ranges equalled only by coral reef species. In terms of their conservation, relatively small protected areas may be sufficient to support breeding populations of H. whitei although that limited movement may result in considerable delays in the recolonisation of depleted areas.  相似文献

The present study aimed firstly, to test for a temperature effect on North Sea haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus growth and secondly, to develop a model that could be used to assess total length (L(T)) and mass (M)-at-age response to different temperature scenarios. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted on a cohort-by-cohort basis from 1970 to 2006. The asymptotic L(T) (L(∞)) was negatively correlated with temperature while the rate at which L(∞) is reached (K) was positively correlated with temperature. K was negatively correlated with density, whereas no effect on L(∞) was observed. These effects were incorporated into a von Bertalanffy model which was extended to include temperature and density as explanatory variables. Only the temperature variable was significant. Fitting the extended von Bertalanffy model revealed that L(∞) decreased while K increased with increasing temperature, resulting in up to a 40% loss of individual yield at older ages. The dramatic decline observed in the mean age at which 50% of the population becomes mature suggests that higher temperatures resulted in larger young M. aeglefinus that matured earlier and therefore reached a smaller maximum size. In a global warming context, the loss of individual yield observed at old ages is likely to reduce the fisheries yield for M. aeglefinus in the North Sea.  相似文献

Peracarid crustaceans are among the most important taxa in terms of biodiversity and carbon-flow within the Weddell Sea benthos; however, very few data on their age, growth and productivity are available. This study uses the pigment lipofuscin as an age marker in the scavenging amphipod Waldeckia obesa (Chevreux, 1905) from the eastern Weddell Sea. Resin brain sections of 159 trap-caught specimens (1.2 to 7.7 mm coxal plate length L(cox) equal to 5 to 31 mm total length) were recorded digitally by confocal microscopy, and images were analysed. A modal progression analysis of the lipofuscin concentration-frequency distribution revealed five regularly spaced modes presumed to reflect consecutive annual age classes. Single females outside the range of mode V occurred, indicating maximum age of up to 8 years in females. No regular modes were obvious from the comparable length-frequency distribution of 386 individuals. Average yearly pigment accumulation was linear, and accumulation rates did not differ between sexes. The estimates of the growth parameters L(infinity) and k of the von Bertalanffy growth function were 7.47 mm L(cox) and 0.50 per year in females, respectively, and 6.92 mm L(cox) and 0.60 per year in males, respectively. Mortality, estimated from catch curves, amounted to 0.27 per year in females and 0.43 per year in males. P/B ratio, calculated from the mass specific growth rate method, was 0.38 per year for the pooled population (0.25 per year in females, 0.31 per year in males, 2.26 per year in juveniles). The results are discussed with regard to advantages and drawbacks of the methodology, and are compared with results from warmer water habitats.  相似文献

Among the several fish species comercially exploited at the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, the "pacu" (Piaractus mesopotamicus) stands as one of the most important. Information regarding its exploitation level is necessary for the proper management of its stocks. Between 1996 and 1997 data on total length of the pacu were collected on a monthly basis from specimens caught by professional and sport fishers in the municipality of Corumbá. These data were used to estimate growth parameters and to assess the exploitation level for this species, applying the Beverton and Holt yield per recruit model. Length frequency analysis, carried out with the software FISAT (ELEFAN), was used to estimate growth parameters: 1996: L(infinity) = 87.20 cm; K = 0.34 year(-1); phi(')=3.41; C = 0.74; WP = 0.81; Longevity = 8.40 years; and 1997: L(infinity) = 86.50 cm; K = 0.34 year(-1); phi(')=3.40; C = 0.60; WP = 0.80; Longevity = 8.40 years. The value for t(0) is -0.363 years for mean values of L(infinity) and k. The weight-length relationship, calculated from data derived from experimental fisheries carried out in 1999 and 2000, is described by the equation: W = 0.048LF(2.835). Estimated mortalities and survival rates were: 1996: Z = 1.51 year(-1); M = 0.62 year(-1); F = 0.89 year(-1); S = 21.9%; and 1997: Z = 1.65 year(-1); M = 0.63 year(-1); F = 1.02 year(-1); S = 19.1%. The yield per recruit analysis showed the following values: F(Present) = 0.96 year(-1); F(max) = 0.67 year(-1) ; F(0.1) = 0.51 year(-1) (for L(c) = 26.7 cm). These results suggest that the pacu is overexploited in the area, so that restrictive measures are in need to manage the pacu fisheries.  相似文献

A. tuberculosa, is the most important bivalve species under exploitation in Colombia. Here, this species is found from Cabo Corrientes (Chocó) to the Ecuador border, in muddy substrates of mangrove forests. In order to determine the growth and the state of fisheries of A. tuberculosa, between December 2005 and April 2007, both, biological (in situ) and commercial studies were performed at Bahia Malaga (Colombian Pacific). The growth was estimated using the general equation of von Bertalanffy, with prior application of the methods of Bhattacharya and Powell-Wetherall. Mortality and exploitation rate were determined using the inverse model of von Bertalanffy. For the biological samplings, a total of 446 individuals of A. tuberculosa (0.64 +/- 0.13 individuals/m2) and 53 individuals (0.05 +/- 0.049 individuals/m2) of Anadara similis were collected. 79% of the catch was below 51mm. In the commercial samplings, 836 individuals of A. tuberculosa (size range: 31.1-92.2mm) were measured, but no A. similis samples were available for this. Recruitment of A. tuberculosa was higher during March, May, July and November. According to the data, A. tuberculosa might be reproducing during December, February, April and August. The data gathered with the biological samples were more reliable on explaining the growth of A. tuberculosa (K=0.332 per year, L(infinity)=88.256mm, t0=0.0556 years) than the one taken from market samples (K=0.256 per year, L(infinity)=89.77mm, t0=0733 years). The high exploitation rate (77%), the low density and the high mortality suggest that A. tuberculosa is in overexploitation state in Bahia Malaga and management strategies are urgently required.  相似文献

为研究海南半鲿(Hemibagrus hainanensis Tchang 1935)种群生物学及资源动态特征, 2019年1—12月于南渡江上游采集358尾海南半鲿,其体长范围为42—289 mm,体质量范围为1.14—282.79 g。利用FiSATⅡ软件中ELEFAN I法估算南渡江上游海南半鲿种群参数,其资源变动趋势则通过Beverton-Holt动态综合模型进行评估。结果显示:von Bertalanffy生长方程所描述的各参数值分别为L∞=304.5 mm、K=0.49、t0=–0.29,体质量的生长拐点为t=1.95,即TL=202.9 mm。利用Pauly经验公式和长度变换渔获曲线法分别估算出:自然死亡系数(M)为1.05,总死亡系数(Z)为1.22,捕捞死亡系数(F)为0.17及资源开发率(E)为0.14,表明其资源未处在过度捕捞状态。研究结果填补了南渡江上游海南半鲿的种群生长特性及动态特征基础资料的空白,为其种群资源恢复和保护策略的制定提供理论依据。  相似文献

Port Stephens, a large natural harbour on the central New South Wales (NSW) coast, provides ideal oceanographic and benthic conditions for the growth of marine algae and seagrasses, and this promotes a suite of herbivorous heterobranch sea slugs such as sea hares and sap-sucking sea slugs. In this article we document both historic and recent observations of sea hares (family Aplysiidae) from Port Stephens with the intention of recording species diversity. The western South Pacific region has the richest aplysiid fauna in the world, with 16 species now recorded in Port Stephens. This location is the most taxonomically diverse for this family in Australia. Despite this hotspot of aplysiid diversity, the taxonomy and nomenclature of 12 species is uncertain, a fact highlighted by a series of nomenclatural notes included in this article. We herein report the first observation of Petalifera sp. in Australian waters. Dolabrifera jacksoniensis Pilsbry, 1896 Pilsbry, H. (1896) Genus III. Dolabrifera Gray, 1847. Manual of Conchology series 1, volume 16, part 63, 113–160, pls 32–43. [Google Scholar] is newly synonymised with D. brazieri G.B. Sowerby II, 1870. Recent reports of southern range extensions for other heterobranch sea slugs, both in Port Stephens and elsewhere in NSW, highlight the importance of recording the existing aplysiid diversity in the port. Thus, any future alteration to species composition and range shifts driven by climate change may be detected.  相似文献

Measurements taken from a series of photographs of otoliths of 37 eels caught in a stretch of river of 150m length were used to prepare a growth curve based on back-calculated measurements. Values of L ∞= 1045 and K = 0.046 were determined. Mean incremental growth calculated as 33 mm per year agreed closely with increments determined from growth observed up to 4 years after tagging eels from the same location. Inconsistencies in results of age determinations based on burned otoliths are described but it is concluded that the technique yields results of sufficient reliability to be used in practical management situations.  相似文献

Studies on age and growth in fishes are essential to establish models on population dynamics. The previous issues were determined in this study by scale growth analyses. Between September 2003 and May 2004, 382 organisms were captured using gill and atarraya nets. Eight samples were developed every month a long this study. Standard length in centimeters (L(e)), total weight in grams (P9t)), scale length in centimeters (L(esc)) and growth rings were determined. The size and weight ranged from 38 to 232 mm (L(e)) and 8.7 to 311.9 g (P(t)), respectively. The growth rings analyses reveal four age groups, being the second group the most representative with 34.3% of the total sampled. The scale ring analyses showed two growth rings, one develops between November-January and the other between April-May, in good correlation with low temperature and gonad development, respectively. The growth parameters were established as: L infinity = 281.1mm, W infinity = 877.1g, K = 0.33 and T(0) = 0.88 year(-1). The growth curves based on length and weight were described by using the von Bertalanffy model: L(e) = 28.11[1 -e (-0.33(t+0.88))] and P(t) = 877.17[1-e (-0.33(t+0.88))]3. Finally, it is concluded that commercial catches in this dam are between a year and year and half-old when exploited.  相似文献

Information about spatial and temporal variability in the distribution and abundance of shark-populations are required for their conservation, management and to update measures designed to mitigate human-shark interactions. However, because some species of sharks are mobile, migratory and occur in relatively small numbers, estimating their patterns of distribution and abundance can be very difficult. In this study, we used a hierarchical sampling design to examine differences in the composition of species, size- and sex-structures of sharks sampled with bottom-set longlines in three different areas with increasing distance from the entrance of Sydney Harbour, a large urbanised estuary. During two years of sampling, we obtained data for four species of sharks (Port Jackson, Heterodontus portusjacksoni; wobbegong, Orectolobus maculatus; dusky whaler, Carcharhinus obscurus and bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas). Only a few O. maculatus and C. obscurus were caught, all in the area closest to the entrance of the Harbour. O. maculatus were caught in all seasons, except summer, while C. obscurus was only caught in summer. Heterodontus portusjacksoni were the most abundant species, caught in the entrance location mostly between July to November, when water temperature was below 21.5°C. This pattern was consistent across both years. C. leucas, the second most abundant species, were captured in all areas of Sydney Harbour but only in summer and autumn when water temperatures were above 23°C. This study quantified, for this first time, how different species utilise different areas of Sydney Harbour, at different times of the year. This information has implications for the management of human-shark interactions, by enabling creation of education programs to modify human behaviour in times of increased risk of potentially dangerous sharks.  相似文献

We analyzed growth, mortality and exploitation rate of Priacanhus arenatus, captured by the shrimp trawling fishery (1989-1996), in northeastern Venezuela. The growth coefficient (K) and the asymptotic length (L8) were estimated by length-frequency data using the Battacharya method and other routines of the FISAT program. Total mortality (Z) and exploitation (E) rates were obtained by length-converted catch curve analysis, based on length-frequency data, and the Berverton and Holt's yield per recruit model, respectively. The mean growth parameters L and K were estimated as 474.7 mm and 0.69 year(-1), respectively. Mean total mortality was 4.03 and the exploitation rate range was 0.70-0.80. Results indicated that the population is overexploited.  相似文献

Human vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase complex subunit 1-like 1 (VKORC1L1), expressed in HEK 293T cells and localized exclusively to membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, was found to support both vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase (VKOR) and vitamin K reductase enzymatic activities. Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters for dithiothreitol-driven VKOR activity were: K(m) (μM) = 4.15 (vitamin K(1) epoxide) and 11.24 (vitamin K(2) epoxide); V(max) (nmol·mg(-1)·hr(-1)) = 2.57 (vitamin K(1) epoxide) and 13.46 (vitamin K(2) epoxide). Oxidative stress induced by H(2)O(2) applied to cultured cells up-regulated VKORC1L1 expression and VKOR activity. Cell viability under conditions of no induced oxidative stress was increased by the presence of vitamins K(1) and K(2) but not ubinquinone-10 and was specifically dependent on VKORC1L1 expression. Intracellular reactive oxygen species levels in cells treated with 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone were mitigated in a VKORC1L1 expression-dependent manner. Intracellular oxidative damage to membrane intrinsic proteins was inversely dependent on VKORC1L1 expression and the presence of vitamin K(1). Taken together, our results suggest that VKORC1L1 is responsible for driving vitamin K-mediated intracellular antioxidation pathways critical to cell survival.  相似文献

Biological data were recorded for 1265 silky sharks Carcharhinus falciformis collected from fish landing sites in eastern Indonesia. These represented catches taken in most calendar months by gillnetting and longlining in the eastern Indian Ocean and contained individuals ranging from embryos to fully mature adults. The growth zones in centra, which were shown to form annually, were counted in the vertebrae in a sub-sample of 200 fish for ageing purposes. The embryo lengths in the 5 months for which there were such data, and the presence of neonates in virtually all months, however, indicated that birth occurs throughout the year and thus there was no well-defined birth date for ageing individual fish. The approximate birth date of each individual was thus estimated from a combination of the total length (L(T) ) at capture and backcalculated L(T) at the formation of the birth zone and at the first and last growth zones in the vertebral centra, together with the period that had elapsed between the formation of those last two growth zones. The number of eggs or embryos in uteri ranged from two to 14, with a mean of 7·2. The estimated mean L(T) at birth of females (811 mm, range: 799-823 mm) and males (812 mm, range: 794-830 mm), derived from the backcalculations corresponding to the birth zones in the centra, were not significantly different (P > 0·05). The L(T) ranges in the catches of post-natal females (570-2592 mm) and males (553-2289 mm) taken by gillnetting were wider than those of the females (1177-2623 mm) and males (1184-2409 mm) taken by longlining. The oldest female and male were 19 and 20 years-old, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth curves for the two sexes did not differ significantly. The growth coefficient, k, and the asymptotic length, L(T∞). were 0·066 year?1 and 2994 mm for the curve fitted to the combined data for females and males. The lengths L(T50) and ages A(50) at which C. falciformis attained maturity were 2156 mm and 15 years for females and 2076 mm and 13 years for males. Investigations were made on different haematological parameters in H. fossilis at two environmental temperature (18 degrees C and 32.5 degrees C) and different periods of breeding cycles. The RBC counts 302.0-10(4)/mm3), WBC counts (10.6-10(4)/mm3), Hb concentration (19.0g%), haematocrit (36.0%), M.C.H.C. (57.7%), total blood volumes (0.966 ml) and per cent blood volumes (1.542%) gave significantly high values but M.C.V. (119.2 micrometer3) and erythrocyte surfaces (52.96 micrometer2) gave low values at higher temperature (32.5 +/- 1 degrees C) and during breeding period (G.S.I. = 10.4 +/- 0.52 g). The higher values obtained for different haematological parameters during breeding period at high temperature may be probably related to greater physical activity and higher metabolic activity at the time of reproduction.  相似文献
