Females in mutually ornamented species are often less conspicuously ornamented than their male conspecifics. It has been hypothesized that offspring quality may decrease if females invest more resources into ornaments at the expense of resources in eggs. An experiment was carried out to test whether natural variation in carotenoid in the eggs from a wild population of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) was associated with survival and growth of their offspring until hatching. Wild Arctic charr were caught at a spawning ground during the spawning period. Eggs from two different females, one female with yellowish carotenoid‐rich eggs and one with paler eggs, were fertilized by sperm from the same male. This was repeated until gametes were collected from 42 females and 21 males, giving a total of 21 groups. After fertilization, the zygotes from each of the two females were reared in four replicated groups. These 168 groups were reared separately until hatching when the surviving larvae were counted and their body length measured. For the two response variables survival and body length at hatching, no effect was demonstrated of any of the predictors (i) amount of carotenoid in the unfertilized eggs, (ii) the mothers'' body condition, or (iii) ornament intensity of their red carotenoid‐based abdominal ornament. Thus, this study gives no support for the hypothesis that females investing less carotenoid into their eggs suffer from decreased offspring quality until hatching. This lack of association between female ornament intensity and their fitness is not as expected if female ornaments evolved due to direct sexual selection from males on the more ornamented females (“direct selection hypothesis”).  相似文献

Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus did not appear to invest in acoustic communication during courtship and agonistic interactions in captivity. Salvelinus alpinus did, however, produce four different types of sounds which were found to be associated with three different types of air exchange behaviours which probably have a swimbladder regulation function. Since air passage sounds appear to be common among Salmonidae, it is suggested that the potential of passive acoustics techniques for behavioural and ecological monitoring should be further investigated in future field and laboratory investigations.  相似文献

Failure of interspecific androgenesis between brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis, Mitchill 1814) and Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus, L.) has been attributed to the conflict between the egg cytoplasm of one species and the sperm nucleus of the other species. To overcome this incompatibility, sperm derived from the brook charr × Arctic charr hybrid male was used to induce androgenetic development in eggs originating from the parental species as well as their hybrids. The eggs were subjected to 420 Gy of X-radiation to damage the maternal nuclear DNA and inseminated with untreated sperm. Haploid zygotes were exposed to high hydrostatic pressure shock (7000 psi for 4 min), which was applied 420 min after insemination to inhibit the first cell cleavage and recover the diploid state of the zygote. The androgenetic diploid offspring that hatched from the brook charr, the Arctic charr and the hybrids eggs had survival rates of 4.7 ± 0.6%, 1.2 ± 0.4% and 16.8 ± 0.5%, respectively. Drastic mortality among the hatched androgenetic individuals was observed within the first five months of rearing. Cytogenetic analysis of the androgenetic progenies exhibited residues of the irradiated maternal nuclear genome in the form of radiation-induced chromosome fragments in 47% of the specimens that were examined. Interactions between the egg cytoplasm and the sperm nucleus, the low quality of the gametes, the expression of homozygous paternal lethal alleles and the incomplete inactivation of the maternal chromosomes were identified as factors responsible for the large mortality among androgenetic embryos and hatchlings.  相似文献

Landlocked Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) populations in sub-Arctic and Arctic Greenland lakes were sampled with multi-mesh-sized survey gillnets. The study covered a range of small shallow lakes (0.01 km2, maximum depth <3.3 m) to large deep lakes (43 km2, maximum depth >200 m). Arctic charr were found in one to three different forms in lakes with maximum depths >3 m. A dwarf form occurred in all lakes inhabited by Arctic charr and was the only form in lakes with maximum depths <8 m. In deeper lakes with maximum depths >20 m and a surface area <0.5 km2, larger charr were found, although in low numbers, the length-frequency distribution being unimodal with a tail towards large sizes. In lakes with a maximum depth >20 m, large-sized charr were more abundant, and the length-frequency distribution of the population was bimodal, with a first mode around 10–12 cm and a second mode around 26–37 cm. In a single large and deep lake, a distinct medium-sized pelagic zooplankton-eating charr form occurred. Maximum size of individual charr was significantly positively correlated with lake maximum depth and volume, and the mean size of large-sized charr was significantly positively correlated with lake volume. Our study indicates that the charr population structure became more complex with increasing lake size. Moreover, the population structure seemed to be influenced by lake-water transparency and the presence or absence of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). This study reports on the importance of the size of the kype (lower jaw) and the adipose fin for establishing and maintaining social dominance in pair-wise interactions among size-matched, reproductively active male Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus. The size of these traits seems not to have a large influence on establishing dominance, but after 4 days of social interactions, and after dominance rank is established, subordinate males show reduced size of their adipose fins and kypes relative to that of dominant males. Consequently, these traits seem to be costly labile characters that could be of importance in inter and intra-sexual evaluations of individual quality.  相似文献

Like many salmonid species, Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is currently threatened by human-induced perturbations. From a conservation perspective, it is important to characterize the genetic diversity of populations so that genetically distinct units worthy of conservation effort can be identified. Here, we used microsatellite markers to assess whether a recently discovered Finnish population of lacustrine charr found in Lake Karhunpesälampi is of natural origin. We also aimed to reveal the colonization history of this lake. To this end, we quantified genetic diversity and distance of this population to other charr populations inhabiting Fennoscandia including all sources used in official Finnish stocking programs. The population was found to be genetically differentiated from all other populations analysed. This, together with the remote location of the lake and other population genetic information, indicates that the population is likely of natural origin. The population deserves to be acknowledged as a genetically distinct unit worthy of conservation.  相似文献

Food intake of Arctic charr was greatest in the fish with reduced lipid depots. It is suggested that appetite declines as lipid accumulates and energy reserves become repleted, such that energy reserves are then maintained close to some set-point.  相似文献

Three populations of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus from southern Baffin Island were previously identified to display variable migratory phenotypes, with an anadromous component of the population and another remaining resident in fresh water. In this study, 14 microsatellite markers were used to help distinguish between two alternative hypotheses to explain the co‐existence of the two ecotypes: that the two ecotypes originate from a single population and are the result of a conditional mating tactic or that the migratory ecotypes are reproductively isolated populations utilizing alternative migratory strategies. In two of the three replicate systems, FST values between the resident and anadromous individuals were non‐significant, while they were significant in a third sampling location. Bayesian clustering analysis implemented in structure, however, failed to identify any within‐location clustering in all three sampling locations. It is concluded from these analyses that the life‐history ecotypes are most likely conditional mating tactics, rather than reproductively isolated populations. Other evidence in favour of the alternative mating tactic hypothesis is briefly reviewed, and implications for management of those populations are discussed.  相似文献

Gut-tract morphology differed between benthivorous and zooplanktivorous Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus caught in the littoral and pelagic zones of a sub-Arctic lake. The differences were related to trophic niche and infection with the cestodes Cyathocephalus truncatus and Eubothrium salvelini . Measurements that were unrelated to cestode infection, including intestinal length, numbers of pyloric caeca and posterior pyloric caeca morphology, differed between S. alpinus that had consumed different prey types, suggesting an adaptive response to divergent trophic niches. The anterior pyloric caeca of S. alpinus with high numbers of cestodes were significantly wider and shorter than those in fish with lower levels of infection. The differences were strongly associated with infection by C. truncatus , which was site-selective and attached to the anterior caeca with a large scolex. Differences in caecal measurements were probably the result of mechanical damage caused by scolex attachment and host responses to infection with C. truncatus . The differences in anterior caeca were also an indirect indicator of trophic specialization. Benthivorous S. alpinus were more exposed to, and more heavily infected with C. truncatus than were pelagic zooplanktivorous fish, because this cestode had Gammarus lacustris as its intermediate host. Nevertheless, care should be exercized when using gut measurements for making inferences about the trophic ecology of fish because a history of infection with cestodes may have profound effects on caecal morphology.  相似文献

To reveal the mechanisms of sedimental H2S accumulation, annual investigations on sedimental environments were conducted in two temperate estuarine lagoons. The lagoons, Gamo and Idoura (Japan), have similar shapes, locations, and topographical properties but different degrees of H2S accumulation. Water stagnation causes a high phytoplankton biomass (Chl. a; 26–52 g l–1) in the inner Gamo Lagoon. Gamo Lagoon sediment was characterized by high bounded sulfides (bounded Smainly FeS) and H2S contents, and low C/N ratios (mean = 10.4) and iron (reactive Fe2+ and total Fe) contents. H2S was not detected in Idoura Lagoon where phytoplankton biomass was much lower (Chl. a; 0.6–4 g l–1). Idoura Lagoon sediment had high C/N ratios (mean=17.9) and high iron contents. The C/N ratio difference implies that organic matter in Gamo Lagoon originates mainly from more decomposable phytoplankton, while organic matter in Idoura Lagoon derives mainly from terrestrial vascular plants with lower decomposability. The excess loading of phytoplanktonic detritus in Gamo accelerates sedimentary microbial activity, including sulfate reduction (i.e., H2S production). High Fe2+and low bounded S contents in Idoura sediment indicate a high chemical buffering capacity toward H2S. In contrast, almost all Fe2+ in Gamo Lagoon had already reacted with H2S as FeS. H2S accumulation in Gamo Lagoon is caused by low sedimentary chemical buffering capacity toward H2S, as well as higher microbial H2S production, caused by the excess loading of phytoplanktonic detritus.  相似文献

Mutant mice generated by disrupting the H2-Aa b major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) gene are demonstrated here to express Aβb chains in the absence of α chains. These mice possess a CD4+ helper T cell (Th) repertoire that uses predominantly the Vβ7 T-cell antigen receptor (Tcr) segment for recognition of any protein antigen presented by the α-free Aβ molecule. As an alloantigen, the Aα-free Aβ molecule is recognized very poorly by T cells from a series of class II disparate mouse strains, indicating that it is grossly different from normal α/β heterodimers. Indeed, molecular modeling suggests a β/β homodimer arrangement with an altered geometry of the Tcr contact area. Interestingly, the mutant mice exhibit normal alloreactivity, without a restricted Vβ usage, toward a series of foreign α/β class II heterodimers, although their T cells developed in the absence of such heterodimers. Thus, the complementarity of Tcr to normal α/β heterodimers, and thereby also alloreactivity, appears to be an ontogeny independent (i. e., germline-encoded) feature.  In tetrapods, the functional (classical) class I and class II B loci of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) are tightly linked in a single chromosomal region. In an earlier study, we demonstrated that in the zebrafish, Danio rerio, order Cypriniformes, the two classes are present on different chromosomes. Here, we show that the situation is similar in the stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, order Gasterosteiformes, the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata, order Cyprinodontiformes, and the cichlid fish Oreochromis niloticus, order Perciformes. These data, together with unpublished results from other laboratories suggest that in all Euteleostei, the classical class I and class II B loci are in separate linkage groups, and that in at least some of these taxa, the class II loci are in two different groups. Since Euteleostei are at least as numerous as tetrapods, in approximately one-half of jawed vertebrates, the class I and class II regions are not linked. Arctic charr, a highly plastic salmonid that inhabits the circumpolar region, colonized its current environment after the last glaciation. Recent colonization limits the capacity of many techniques to define and characterize constituent populations. As a novel approach, we used the major histocompatibility (MH) class IIalpha gene polymorphism as a marker that would characterize the genetic divergence of global Arctic charr populations caused by drift and by local adaptation to pathogens. We were able to detect significant isolation of all the lineages previously defined by mitochondrial DNA sequencing and also isolation of some populations within those groups. We found that most of the polymorphism of the class IIalpha gene was distributed globally, which indicates ancestral selection; however, in most cases, distinctive allele frequencies and specific haplotypes distinguished each population suggesting that recent selection has also occurred. Although all studied populations showed similar MH class IIalpha polymorphisms, we also found variation in which particular amino acid positions were polymorphic and which were constant in the different populations studied. This variation provides a greater adaptive capacity for the MH class IIalpha receptors in Arctic charr and is yet another illustration of the extraordinary plasticity of the species.  相似文献

Genetic theories of sexual selection predict that most ornamental secondary sexual traits provide reliable indication of the genetic quality of their bearers. Accordingly, also the offspring of mates with elaborate mating display should perform better than those of less conspicuous counterparts. In this study, we used Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) as a model species to investigate whether the variation in a carotenoid-based red breeding coloration (a sexually dichromatic trait) in different sexes would reflect differences in individual genetic variability, one measure of individual quality, and/or indirectly, be manifested in variation in the offspring’s early viability and growth. We created maternal half-sibling families by artificially fertilizing the eggs with milt from bright- and pale-coloured males and then held the resulting progenies under identical hatchery conditions. The expression of red coloration among parental fish was not associated with their genetic diversity estimates in either sex nor did offspring sired by bright males consistently differ in terms of embryo survival or endogenous growth efficiency from offspring sired by pale males. By contrast, maternal effects were notably strong and, additionally, the degree of female coloration was negatively linked to their reproductive potential. The more intensely coloured females had a smaller relative fecundity and they also produced offspring of lower viability, implying a significant trade-off in resource allocation between ornamentation and offspring. Our results indicate that the red breeding ornamentation of Arctic charr is likely to be informative rather among females than males when the reproductive quality is predicted on grounds of the number of offspring produced. Nevertheless, this study does not support the direct selection hypothesis in explaining the evolution of female ornamentation, but rather suggests that the less intense coloration of female charr compared to males may reflect inter-sexual differences in the trade-off between natural and sexual selection.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) genes are only constitutively expressed in certain immune response cells such as B cells, macrophages, dendritic cells and other antigen presenting cells. This cell specific expression pattern and the presence of conserved regions such as the X-, X2-, Y-, and W-boxes make the MHCII promoters especially interesting as vector constructs. We tested whether the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) MHCII promoters can function in cell lines from other organisms. We found that the salmon MHCII α and MHCII β promoters could drive expression of a LacZ reporter gene in adherent lymphoblast cell lines from dog (DH82) and rabbit (HybL-L). This paper shows that the promoters of Atlantic salmon MHCII α and β genes can function in mammalian cell lines.  相似文献

Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae gilae) was federally protected in 1973 because of severe declines in abundance and geographic range size. At present, four relict genetic lineages of the species remain in mountain streams of New Mexico and Arizona, USA. Management actions aimed at species recovery, including hatchery production and restocking of formerly occupied streams, have been guided by information from non-functional genetic markers. In this study, we investigated genetic variation at exon 2 of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II β gene that is involved in pathogen resistance and thus presumably under natural selection. Phylogenetic analysis revealed trans-species polymorphism and a significantly high ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous amino acid changes consistent with the action of historical balancing selection that maintained diversity at this locus in the past. However, Gila trout exhibited low allelic diversity (five alleles from 142 individuals assayed) compared to some other salmonid fishes, and populations that originated exclusively from hatcheries possessed three or fewer MHC alleles. Comparative analysis of genetic variation at MHC and six presumably neutrally evolving microsatellite loci revealed that genetic drift cannot be rejected as a primary force governing evolution of MHC in contemporary populations of Gila trout. Maintenance of diversity at MHC will require careful implementation of hatchery breeding protocols and continued protection of wild populations to prevent loss of allelic diversity due to drift.  相似文献
