The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that increasing the speed and inclination of the treadmill increases the peak Achilles tendon forces and their rates of rise and fall in force. Implantable force transducers (IFT) were inserted in the confluence of the medial and lateral heads of the left gastrocnemius tendon in 11 rabbits. IFT voltages were successfully recorded in 8 animals as the animals hopped on a treadmill at each of two speeds (0.1 and 0.3 mph) and inclinations (0 degrees and 12 degrees). Instrumented tendons were isolated shortly after sacrifice and calibrated. Contralateral unoperated tendons were failed in uniaxial tension to determine maximum or failure force, from which safety factor (ratio of maximum force to peak in vivo force) was calculated for each activity. Peak force and the rates of rise and fall in force significantly increased with increasing treadmill inclination (p<0.001). Safety factors averaged 30.8+/-7.5 for quiet standing, 7.0+/-2.9 for level hopping, and 5.2+/-0.7 for inclined hopping (mean+/-SEM). These in vivo force parameters will help tissue engineers better design functional tissue engineered constructs for rabbit Achilles tendon and other tendon repairs. Force patterns can also serve as input data for mechanical stimulation of tissue-engineered constructs in culture. Such approaches are expected to help accelerate tendon repair after injury.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine how in vitro mechanical stimulation of tissue engineered constructs affects their stiffness and modulus in culture and tendon repair biomechanics 12 weeks after surgical implantation. Using six female adult New Zealand White rabbits, autogenous tissue engineered constructs were created by seeding mesenchymal stem cells (0.1 x 10(6) cells/ml) in collagen gel (2.6 mg/ml) and combining both with a collagen sponge. Employing a novel experimental design strategy, four constructs from each animal were mechanically stimulated (one 1 Hz cycle every 5 min to 2.4% peak strain for 8 h/day for 2 weeks) while the other four remained unstretched during the 2 week culture period. At the end of incubation, three of the mechanically stimulated (S) and three of the nonstimulated (NS) constructs from each animal were assigned for in vitro mechanical testing while the other two autogenous constructs were implanted into bilateral full-thickness, full-length defects created in the central third of rabbit patellar tendons (PTs). No significant differences were found in the in vitro linear stiffnesses between the S (0.15+/-0.1 N/mm) and NS constructs (0.08+/-0.02 N/mm; mean+/-SD). However, in vitro mechanical stimulation significantly increased the structural and material properties of the repair tissue, including a 14% increase in maximum force (p=0.01), a 50% increase in linear stiffness (p=0.001), and 23-41% increases in maximum stress and modulus (p=0.01). The S repairs achieved 65%, 80%, 60%, and 40% of normal central PT maximum force, linear stiffness, maximum stress, and linear modulus, respectively. The results for the S constructs exceed values obtained previously by our group using the same animal and defect model, and to our knowledge, this is the first study to show the benefits of in vitro mechanical stimulation on tendon repair biomechanics. In addition, the linear stiffnesses for the construct and repair were positively correlated (r=0.56) as were their linear moduli (r=0.68). Such in vitro predictors of in vivo outcome hold the potential to speed the development of tissue engineered products by reducing the time and costs of in vivo studies.  相似文献

Constructs containing autogenous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) seeded in collagen gels have been used by our group to repair rabbit central patellar tendon defect injuries. Although these cell-gel composites exhibit improved repair biomechanics compared to natural healing, they can be difficult to handle at surgery and lack the necessary stiffness to resist peak in vivo forces early thereafter. MSCs are typically suspended in collagen gels around two posts in the base of a well in a specially designed silicone dish. The distance between posts is approximately the length of the tendon wound site. MSCs contract the gel around the posts prior to removal of the construct for implantation at surgery. We hypothesized that in vitro construct alignment and stiffness might be enhanced in the midregion of the longer construct where the end effects of the posts on the bulk material (St. Venant effects) could be minimized. Rabbit MSCs were seeded in purified bovine collagen gel at 0.04 M cells/mg collagen. The cell-gel mixture was pipetted into silicone dishes having two post-to-post lengths (short: 11 mm and long: 51 mm) but equivalent well widths and depths and post diameters. After 14 days of incubation, tensile stiffness and modulus of the constructs were measured using equivalent grip-to-grip lengths. Collagen fiber orientation index or OI (which measures angular dispersion of fibers) was quantified using small angle light scattering (SALS). Long constructs showed significantly lower angular dispersion vs. short constructs (OI of 41.24 degrees +/-1.57 degrees vs. 48.43 degrees +/-1.27 degrees , mean+/-SEM, p<0.001) with significantly higher linear modulus (0.064+/-0.009 MPa vs. 0.024+/-0.004 MPa, p=0.0022) and linear stiffness (0.031+/-0.005 MPa vs. 0.018+/-0.004 N/mm, mean+/-SEM, respectively, p=0.0404). We now plan to use principles of functional tissue engineering to determine if repairs containing central regions of longer MSC-collagen constructs improve defect repair biomechanics after implantation at surgery.  相似文献

The postoperative outcome of hand flexor tendon repair remains limited by tendon adhesions that prevent normal range of motion. Recent studies using in situ hybridization techniques have implicated transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta1) in both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of repair. TGF-beta1 is a growth factor that plays multiple roles in wound healing and has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of excessive scar formation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1 in a rabbit zone II flexor tendon wound-healing model. Twenty-two adult New Zealand White rabbits underwent complete transection of the middle digit flexor digitorum profundus tendon in zone II. The tendons were immediately repaired and received intraoperative infiltration of one of the following substances: (1) control phosphate-buffered saline; (2) 50 microg neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1; (3) 50 microg each of neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1 and to TGF-beta2. Eight rabbits that had not been operated on underwent analysis for determination of normal flexion range of motion at their proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, using a 1.2-N axial load applied to the flexor digitorum profundus tendon. All rabbits that had been operated on were placed in casts for 8 weeks to allow maximal tendon adhesion and were then killed to determine their flexion range of motion. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's unpaired t test. When a 1.2-N load was used on rabbit forepaws that had not been operated on, normal combined flexion range of motion at the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints was 93+/-6 degrees. Previous immobilization in casts did not reduce the range of motion in these forepaws (93+/-4 degrees). In the experimental groups, complete transection and repair of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon with infiltration of control phosphate-buffered saline solution resulted in significantly decreased range of motion between the proximal and distal phalanges [15+/-6 degrees (n = 8)]. However, in the tendon repairs infiltrated with neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1, flexion range of motion increased to 32+/-9 degrees (n = 7; p = 0.002). Interestingly, a combination of neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1 and that to TGF-beta2 did not improve postoperative range of motion [18+/-4 degrees (n = 7; p = 0.234)]. These data demonstrate that (1) the rabbit flexor tendon repair model is useful for quantifying tendon scar formation on the basis of degrees of flexion between proximal and distal phalanges; (2) intraoperative infiltration of neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta1 improves flexor tendon excursion; and (3) simultaneous infiltration of neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta2 nullifies this effect. Because TGF-beta1 is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of excessive scar formation, the findings presented here suggest that intraoperative biochemical modulation of TGF-beta1 levels limits flexor tendon adhesion formation.  相似文献

Introducing mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-seeded collagen constructs into load-protected wound sites in the rabbit patellar and Achilles tendons significantly improves their repair outcome compared to natural healing of the unfilled defect. However, these constructs would not be acceptable alternatives for repairing complete tendon ruptures because they lack the initial stiffness at the time of surgery to resist the expected peak in vivo forces thereafter. Since the stiffness of these constructs has also been shown to positively correlate with the stiffness of the subsequent repairs, improving initial stiffness by appropriate selection of in vitro culture conditions would seem crucial. In this study we examined the individual and combined effects of collagen scaffold type, construct length, and mechanical stimulation on in vitro implant stiffness. Two levels each of scaffold material (collagen gel vs. collagen sponge), construct length (short vs. long), and mechanical stimulation (stimulated vs. non-stimulated) were examined. Our results indicate that all three treatment factors influenced construct linear stiffness. Increasing the length of the construct had the greatest effect on the stiffness compared to introducing mechanical stimulation or changing the scaffold material. A significant interaction was also found between length and stimulation. Of the eight groups studied, longer, stimulated, cell-sponge constructs showed the highest in vitro linear stiffness. We now plan in vivo studies to determine if higher stiffness constructs generate higher stiffness repairs 12 weeks after surgery and if in vitro construct stiffness continues to correlate with in vivo repair parameters like linear stiffness.  相似文献

Muscle, bone, and tendon forces; the movement of the center of mass, and the spring properties of the body during terrestrial locomotion can be measured using ground-mounted force platforms. These measurements have been extremely time consuming because of the difficulty in obtaining repeatable constant speed trials (particularly with animals). We have overcome this difficulty by mounting a force platform directly under the belt of a motorized treadmill. With this arrangement, vertical force can be recorded from an unlimited number of successive ground contacts in a much shorter time. With this treadmill-mounted force platform it is possible to accurately make the following measurements over the full range of steady speeds and under various perturbations of normal gait: 1) vertical ground reaction force over the course of the contact phase; 2) peak forces in bone, muscle, and tendon; 3) the vertical displacement of the center of mass; and 4) contact time for the limbs. In our treadmill-force platform design, belt forces and frictional forces cause no measurable cross-talk problem. Natural frequency (160 Hz), nonlinearity (less than 5%), and position independence (less than 2%) are all quite acceptable. Motor-caused vibrations are greater than 150 Hz and thus can be easily filtered.  相似文献

The effect of aging on soft tissue repair is poorly understood. We examined collagen fibril diameter in repairing patellar tendons from young adult and aging rabbits. We hypothesized that repairing tendons from older (geriatric) rabbits would have similar diameter fibrils compared with the younger (young adult) rabbits. Full-length, full-thickness, central-third (2.5 to 3 mm) patellar tendon injuries were made by cutting out the center of the tendon in twelve 1-y-old and thirteen 4- to 5.5 (average, 4.25)-y-old female New Zealand White rabbits. The contralateral tendon served as an unoperated control. The rabbits were euthanized at 6, 12, and 26 wk after surgery. The collagen fibril diameter was examined by electron microscopy at the patellar end, middle, and tibial end of the patellar tendon. There was no significant decline in collagen fibril diameter at any location in the aging rabbit healing patellar tendons compared with those of the 1-y-old rabbits. This study found that collagen fibril diameter was not altered with increasing age in the healing rabbit patellar tendon.  相似文献

Risk factors for activity-related tendon disorders of the hand include applied force, duration, and rate of loading. Understanding the relationship between external loading conditions and internal tendon forces can elucidate their role in injury and rehabilitation. The goal of this investigation is to determine whether the rate of force applied at the fingertip affects in vivo forces in the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon and the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon during an isometric task. Tendon forces, recorded with buckle force transducers, and fingertip forces were simultaneously measured during open carpal tunnel surgery as subjects (N=15) increased their fingertip force from 0 to 15N in 1, 3, and 10s. The rates of 1.5, 5, and 15N/s did not significantly affect FDP or FDS tendon to fingertip force ratios. For the same applied fingertip force, the FDP tendon generated more force than the FDS. The mean FDP to fingertip ratio was 2.4+/-0.7 while the FDS to tip ratio averaged 1.5+/-1.0 (p<0.01). The fine motor control needed to generate isometric force ramps at these specific loading rates probably required similar high activation levels of multiple finger muscles in order to stabilize the finger and control joint torques at the force rates studied. Therefore, for this task, no additional increase in muscle force was observed at higher rates. These findings suggest that for high precision, isometric pinch maneuvers under static finger conditions, tendon forces are independent of loading rate.  相似文献

Activities of daily living (ADLs) generate complex, multidirectional forces in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). While calibration problems preclude direct measurement in patients, ACL forces can conceivably be measured in animals after technical challenges are overcome. For example, motion and force sensors can be implanted in the animal but investigators must determine the extent to which these sensors and surgery affect normal gait. Our objectives in this study were to determine (1) if surgically implanting knee motion sensors and an ACL force sensor significantly alter normal ovine gait and (2) how increasing gait speed and grade on a treadmill affect ovine gait before and after surgery. Ten skeletally mature, female sheep were used to test four hypotheses: (1) surgical implantation of sensors would significantly decrease average and peak vertical ground reaction forces (VGRFs) in the operated limb, (2) surgical implantation would significantly decrease single limb stance duration for the operated limb, (3) increasing treadmill speed would increase VGRFs pre- and post operatively, and (4) increasing treadmill grade would increase the hind limb VGRFs pre- and post operatively. An instrumented treadmill with two force plates was used to record fore and hind limb VGRFs during four combinations of two speeds (1.0 m/s and 1.3 m/s) and two grades (0 deg and 6 deg). Sensor implantation decreased average and peak VGRFs less than 10% and 20%, respectively, across all combinations of speed and grade. Sensor implantation significantly decreased the single limb stance duration in the operated hind limb during inclined walking at 1.3 m/s but had no effect on single limb stance duration in the operated limb during other activities. Increasing treadmill speed increased hind limb peak (but not average) VGRFs before surgery and peak VGRF only in the unoperated hind limb during level walking after surgery. Increasing treadmill grade (at 1 m/s) significantly increased hind limb average and peak VGRFs before surgery but increasing treadmill grade post op did not significantly affect any response measure. Since VGRF values exceeded 80% of presurgery levels, we conclude that animal gait post op is near normal. Thus, we can assume normal gait when conducting experiments following sensor implantation. Ultimately, we seek to measure ACL forces for ADLs to provide design criteria and evaluation benchmarks for traditional and tissue engineered ACL repairs and reconstructions.  相似文献

Transected flexor tendons are typically treated by suture repair followed by rehabilitation that generates repetitive tendon loading. Recent results in an in vivo canine model indicate that during the first 10 days after injury and repair, there is an increase in the rigidity of the tendon repair site. Our objective was to determine whether or not ex vivo cyclic loading of repaired flexor tendons causes a similar increase in repair-site rigidity. We simulated 10 days of rehabilitation by applying 6000 loading cycles to repaired canine flexor tendons ex vivo at force levels generated during passive motion rehabilitation; we then evaluated their tensile mechanical properties. High-force (peak force, 17 N) cyclic loading increased repair-site rigidity by 100% and decreased repair-site strain by 50%, whereas low-force (5 N) loading did not change the properties of the repair site. This mechanical conditioning effect may explain, in part, the changes in tensile properties observed after only 10 days of healing in vivo. Mechanical conditioning of repaired flexor tendons by repetitive forces applied during rehabilitation may lead to increases in repair-site rigidity and decreases in strain, thereby altering the mechanical loading environment of tissues and cells at the repair site.  相似文献

We twice tested the hypothesis that top running speeds are determined by the amount of force applied to the ground rather than how rapidly limbs are repositioned in the air. First, we compared the mechanics of 33 subjects of different sprinting abilities running at their top speeds on a level treadmill. Second, we compared the mechanics of declined (-6 degrees ) and inclined (+9 degrees ) top-speed treadmill running in five subjects. For both tests, we used a treadmill-mounted force plate to measure the time between stance periods of the same foot (swing time, t(sw)) and the force applied to the running surface at top speed. To obtain the force relevant for speed, the force applied normal to the ground was divided by the weight of the body (W(b)) and averaged over the period of foot-ground contact (F(avge)/W(b)). The top speeds of the 33 subjects who completed the level treadmill protocol spanned a 1.8-fold range from 6.2 to 11.1 m/s. Among these subjects, the regression of F(avge)/W(b) on top speed indicated that this force was 1.26 times greater for a runner with a top speed of 11.1 vs. 6.2 m/s. In contrast, the time taken to swing the limb into position for the next step (t(sw)) did not vary (P = 0.18). Declined and inclined top speeds differed by 1.4-fold (9.96+/-0.3 vs. 7.10+/-0.3 m/s, respectively), with the faster declined top speeds being achieved with mass-specific support forces that were 1.3 times greater (2.30+/- 0.06 vs. 1.76+/-0.04 F(avge)/ W(b)) and minimum t(sw) that were similar (+8%). We conclude that human runners reach faster top speeds not by repositioning their limbs more rapidly in the air, but by applying greater support forces to the ground.  相似文献

The in vivo passive knee joint reaction force was measured in a rabbit model of tibial diaphyseal lengthening. This was based on the assumption that limb lengthening creates soft tissue tension that compresses the joint surface and generates the joint contact force. A measurement method was developed that involved the distraction of the joint and the determination of the distraction force that just separates the joint surfaces. Sixteen immature (mean+/-SD age=9+/-0.6 weeks) New Zealand White rabbits underwent 30% (left) tibial diaphyseal lengthening at a rate of two 0.4mm incremental lengthenings per day. The knee joint reaction force was measured at the end of lengthening (8 rabbits, mean+/-SD age=14+/-0.6 weeks) and five weeks after lengthening (8 rabbits, mean+/-SD age=19+/-0.7 weeks). An instrumented bilateral distractor and an extensometer were fixed cross the knee joint. The joint distraction force and distraction displacement were measured when the joint was distracted in steps and after the section of the Achilles tendon. The joint reaction force on the lengthened side was significantly higher than the control side at both time points (mean+/-SD 44.4+/-7.8 N v. 27.2+/-4.0 N at the end of lengthening, 44.3+/-S6.5 N v. 31.3+/-3.0 N at 5 weeks after lengthening). The contribution of the gastrocnemius to the joint reaction force on the lengthened side was also significantly higher than the control side at both time points (mean+/-SD 9.0+/-1.3N v. 2.8+/-0.8 N at the end of lengthening, 5.3+/-1.4N v. 2.7+/-0.5N at 5 weeks after lengthening). There were significant knee and ankle joint contractures at the end of lengthening, as evidenced by decreased range of motion (mean+/-SD 27+/-8 degrees and 36+/-13 degrees, respectively), which remained 5 weeks after lengthening (mean+/-SD 26+/-6 degrees and 35+/-8 degrees, respectively). The gastrocnemius contributed about 20% of the joint reaction force, indicating that changes in the other intra- and extra-articular structures due to joint contracture may be more important in generating the joint reaction force.  相似文献

In vivo muscle forces are typically estimated using literature-based or subject-specific moment arms (MAs) because it is not possible to measure in vivo muscle forces non-invasively. However, even subject-specific muscle-tendon MAs vary across contraction levels and are impossible to determine at high contraction levels without techniques that use ionized radiation. Therefore, different generic MA functions are often used to estimate in vivo muscle forces, which may alter force predictions and the shape of the muscle’s force-length relationship. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of different literature-based patella tendon MA functions on the vastus lateralis (VL) force-angle relationship. Participants (n = 11) performed maximum voluntary isometric knee extension contractions at six knee flexion angles, ranging from 40° to 90°. To estimate in vivo VL muscle force, the peak knee extension torque at each joint angle was multiplied by the VL’s physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) relative to the quadriceps’ PCSA (34%) and then divided by the angle-specific patella tendon MA for 19 different functions. Maximum VL force was significantly different across MA functions (p ≤ 0.039) and occurred at different knee flexion angles. The shape of the VL force-angle relationship also differed significantly (p < 0.01) across MA functions. According to the maximum force generated by VL based on its literature-derived PSCA, only the VL force-angle relationships estimated using geometric imaging-based MA functions are feasible across the knee angles studied here. We therefore recommend that an average of these MA functions is calculated to estimate quadriceps muscle forces if subject-specific MAs cannot be determined.  相似文献

Tendons transmit contractile muscular force to bone to produce movement, and it is believed cells can generate endogenous forces on the extracellular matrix to maintain tissue homeostasis. However, little is known about the direct mechanical measurement of cell-matrix interaction in cell-generated human tendon constructs. In this study we examined if cell-generated force could be detected and quantified in engineered human tendon constructs, and if glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) contribute to tendon force transmission. Following de-tensioning of the tendon constructs it was possible to quantify an endogenous re-tensioning. Further, it was demonstrated that the endogenous re-tensioning response was markedly blunted after interference with the cytoskeleton (inhibiting non-muscle myosin-dependent cell contraction by blebbistatin), which confirmed that re-tensioning was cell generated. When the constructs were elongated and held at a constant length a stress relaxation response was quantified, and removing 27% of the GAG content of tendon did not alter the relaxation behavior, which indicates that GAGs do not play a meaningful role in force transmission within this system.  相似文献

Tendon orientations in knee models are often taken from cadaver studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of muscle activation on tendon orientation in vivo. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of the knee were made during relaxation and isometric knee extensions and flexions with 0 degrees , 15 degrees and 30 degrees of knee joint flexion. For six tendons, the orientation angles in sagittal and frontal plane were calculated. In the sagittal plane, muscle activation pulled the patellar tendon to a more vertical orientation and the semitendinosus and sartorius tendons to a more posterior orientation. In the frontal plane, the semitendinosus had a less lateral orientation, the biceps femoris a more medial orientation and the patellar tendon less medial orientation in loaded compared to unloaded conditions. The knee joint angle also influenced the tendon orientations. In the sagittal plane, the patellar tendon had a more anterior orientation near full extension and the biceps femoris had an anterior orientation with 0 degrees and 15 degrees flexions and neutral with 30 degrees flexions. Within 0 degrees to 30 degrees of flexion, the biceps femoris cannot produce a posterior shear force and the anterior angle of the patellar tendon is always larger than the hamstring tendons. Therefore, co-contraction of the hamstring and quadriceps is unlikely to reduce anterior shear forces in knee angles up to 30 degrees . Finally, inter-individual variation in tendon angles was large. This suggests that the amount of shear force produced and the potential to counteract shear forces by co-contraction is subject-specific.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to associate the force produced by the cat medial gastrocnemius (MG) during unrestrained treadmill locomotion with the corresponding myoelectric signals (MES's). An intervention analysis based on the autoregressive-integrated moving average (ARIMA) process was performed on records obtained at treadmill speeds of 0.67 ms-1 and 2.24 ms-1. Results indicate that the pattern of MG myoelectric activity during a single step cycle may be divided into two parts. The primary burst (E1 burst) of activity occurs before foot contact and represents an energy build up which is related to a major part of the MG force monitored at the tendon. During stance, a second burst of activity is depicted by an almost critically damped second order system, and is responsible for the residual tension observed. Thus in vivo forces can be linked to MES's provided that phase differences between electrical and mechanical responses are taken into account.  相似文献

We designed a simple procedure based on the angular speed of the knee joint for quantitating the patellar tendon reflex. The angular speed of the knee joint is calculated from acceleration data generated in response to the tapping force applied to the patellar tendon with a customized tendon hammer and measured using a tri-axial accelerometer placed at the ankle joint. Data were collected and processed using a signal analyzer and a notebook PC. The results obtained using standard equipment were similar to those generated by more elaborate devices. For instance, the time delay (29.6+/-6.0 ms) and the acceleration time (150.8+/-19.5 ms) of the speed response were quite constant for all participants within the range of tapping forces normally applied during physical examinations. Representative relationships between the peak tapping force and the peak angular speed also closely fit with the exponential model (the average coefficient of determination, 0.70; range, 0.43-0.97). In contrast, the mean asymptotic value of the peak angular speed (Omega(pas)) was 160+/-67 degrees/s for spastic individuals, compared with only 72+/-21 degrees/s for healthy individuals. The important features of this method are portability, ease of use, and non-constraint of solicited reflex responses.  相似文献

Mathematical models of small animals that predict in vivo forces acting on the lower extremities are critical for studies of musculoskeletal biomechanics and diseases. Rabbits are advantageous in this regard because they remodel their cortical bone similar to humans. Here, we enhance a recent mathematical model of the rabbit knee joint to include the loading behavior of individual muscles, ligaments, and joint contact at the knee and ankle during the stance phase of hopping. Geometric data from the hindlimbs of three adult New Zealand white rabbits, combined with previously reported intersegmental forces and moments, were used as inputs to the model. Muscle, ligament, and joint contact forces were computed using optimization techniques assuming that muscle endurance is maximized and ligament strain energy resists tibial shear force along an inclined plateau. Peak forces developed by the quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscle groups and by compressive knee contact were within the range of theoretical and in vivo predictions. Although a minimal force was carried by the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, force patterns in the posterior cruciate ligament were consistent with in vivo tibial displacement patterns during hopping in rabbits. Overall, our predictions compare favorably with theoretical estimates and in vivo measurements in rabbits, and enhance previous models by providing individual muscle, ligament, and joint contact information to predict in vivo forces acting on the lower extremities in rabbits.  相似文献

In order to move the finger the tendon force must overcome the gliding resistance of the tendon as well as the forces to move the joints, finger inertias, and external load. These sources, combined, make up the work of flexion (WOF) which has been experimentally used to evaluate the finger function. In this study, we have designed a new device, which can measure the forces at the proximal and distal end of the tendon during finger flexion, so that gliding resistance can be isolated from the WOF. Two index fingers from a pair of human cadaver hands were used for testing this device. Preliminary data showed that internal resistance occupied about 10% of WOF with an intact tendon. However, after tendon repair, the gliding resistance increased 31% of WOF for a modified Kessler repair and 50% of WOF for a Becker repair compared to intact tendon. We simulated joint stiffness by injection of saline solution into the proximal interphalangeal joint. This increased the overall WOF but not the gliding resistance. We believe that this testing device provides a useful tool to evaluate finger function after tendon repair in an experimental model.  相似文献

The present study tested the hypotheses that Achilles tendon forces during fast concentric actions do not differ between extended and flexed knee positions, and this phenomenon is attributable to the force-length characteristics and electromyograms (EMGs) of gastrocnemius muscle. Seven healthy men performed static and concentric plantarflexions at fully extended (K0) and 0.785 rad (45 degrees ) flexed (K45) knee positions with the maximal effort. In concentric actions, the angular velocities were set at 0.524 (slow) and 6.109 rad s(-1) (fast). Fascicle length of medial gastrocnemius (MG) was determined with ultrasonography. Surface EMGs of the MG were recorded during each action. Achilles tendon force was calculated from the torque and moment arm of the tendon. Peak tendon forces in fast concentric actions were similar in K0 and in K45, but those in static and slow concentric actions significantly (P<0.05) differed between the two positions. When the tendon force peaked, the fascicle lengths in each action and fascicle velocities in both concentric actions were significantly (P<0.05) greater in K0 than in K45. The EMGs were significantly (P<0.05) higher in K0 than K45 during each action. The results suggest that (1) the difference in the tendon forces between the two positions can be explained by the force-length and -velocity characteristics and the EMGs of the MG, and (2) the contribution of the MG to the tendon force in flexed knee positions is greater in concentric actions than expected from the results in static actions.  相似文献
