Responses of auditory neurons in the torus semicircularis (TS) of Pleurodema thaul, a leptodactylid from Chile, to synthetic stimuli having diverse temporal patterns and to digitized advertisement calls of P. thaul and three sympatric species, were recorded to investigate their temporal response selectivities. The advertisement call of this species consists of a long sequence of sound pulses (a pulse-amplitude-modulated, or PAM, signal) having a dominant frequency of about 2000 Hz. Each of the sound pulses contains intra-pulse sinusoidal-amplitude-modulations (SAMs). Synthetic stimuli consisted of six series in which the following acoustic parameters were systematically modified, one at a time: PAM rate, pulse duration, number of pulses, and intra-pulse SAM rate. The carrier frequency of these stimuli was set at the characteristic frequency (CF) of the isolated units (n = 47). Response patterns of TS units to synthetic call variants reveal different degrees of selectivities for each of the temporal variables, with populations of neurons responding maximally to specific values found in the advertisement call of this species. These selectivities are mainly shaped by neuronal responsiveness to the overall sound energy of the stimulus and by the inability of neurons to discharge to short inter-pulse gaps. Reaction selectivity of Pseudomonas cepacia, Rhizomucor miehei, and Candida antarctica B lipases was assessed in multicompetitive esterification reaction mixtures containing an homologous series of n-chain even carbon number fatty acid (FA; C4-C18) substrates and a single alcohol cosubstrate (glycerol, 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD), or 1, 3-propanediol (1,3-PD)) in tert-butyl methyl ether at water activity of 0.69 or 0.90 and a reaction temperature of 35 degrees C. For P. cepacia lipase, the ordinal patterns of FA selectivities observed were, with glycerol, C8 > C10, C6, C16 > other FA; with 1,2-PD and 1, 3-PD, C16 > C8 > C14 > other FA. For R. miehei lipase, the ordinal patterns of FA selectivities observed were, with glycerol, C8 > C12 > C10, C14 > other FA; with 1,2-PD and 1,3-PD, C8 > C12 > other FA. For C. antarctica B lipase, the ordinal patterns of FA selectivities observed were, with glycerol, C8 > C10, C6, C12 > other FA; with 1, 2-PD, C8 > C10, C6 > other FA; and with 1,3-PD, C8 > C10 > C6 > other FA. The differences in selectivity among FA ranged up to 16-fold, depending upon the lipase and alcohol cosubstrate used. These findings represent intrinsic and substrate-modulated features of FA selectivities that are of particular relevance to the use of lipases for acylglycerol synthesis reactions.  相似文献

In addition to specificity for carboxylic esters, the lipases are selective for lipid classes and show selectivity for primary vs. secondary alcohols (positional or regio-), fatty acids, enantiomers (chirality of either the acid or alcohol residue) and combinations of these. Uses of the enzymes have depended to some extent on regio- and fatty acid selectivities. Newer applications, such as ester synthesis and asymmetric hydrolysis, may not be based on selectivities. New neurophysiological results show the existence of multiple transformations of color signals in the primary visual cortex (V1) in macaque monkey. These different color mechanisms may contribute separately to the perception of color boundaries and colored regions. Many cells in V1 respond to color and to black-white (luminance) patterns. These neurons are spatially selective and could provide signals about boundaries between differently colored regions. Other V1 neurons that prefer color over luminance respond without much spatial selectivity to colored stimuli, and could be the neural basis for the response to local color modulation within a region. How these different types of color cells combine inputs from cone photoreceptors is what gives them their different spatial selectivities for color.  相似文献

This microreview focuses on the nucleophilic ring‐opening of azetidiniums presenting various substitution patterns at C2, C3, and C4. In most cases, the nucleophilic ring‐opening occurred in a stereoselective and regioselective fashion producing functionalized linear amines. Summary Diets of grasshopper species from two arid grassland communities in Trans-Pecos, Texas, were determined by gut analysis. Species-specific food plant choice and niche breadths are presented for each of these species. As a group, grasshoppers range from monophagous to polyphagous feeders although most species fall in the oligophagous to polyphagous group. Phylogenetic constraints are evident such that gomphocerinae are primarily grass feeders while melanoplinae feed predominantly on forbs; the oedipodinae show less clearcut tendencies.Feeding patterns are remarkably constant from site to site and overall, community niche breadth distributions between sites do not differ greatly. Individual species tend to eat the same plant species at various sites and maintain similar niche breadths. Species with relatively specialized diets tend to feed on predictable plant species such as grasses and long-lived perrenial forbs.Grasshopper feeding patterns present some problems to the current theory of herbivore diet specialization since forb feeding melanoplines tend to be polyphagous (contrary to predictions). Life history patterns unrelated to tracking host plants may explain some aspects of diet breadth since diet selectivities are presumably adjusted according to the probability of finding suitable food plants.  相似文献

Where neural information processing is concerned, there is no debate about the fact that spikes are the basic currency for transmitting information between neurons. How the brain actually uses them to encode information remains more controversial. It is commonly assumed that neuronal firing rate is the key variable, but the speed with which images can be analysed by the visual system poses a major challenge for rate-based approaches. We will thus expose here the possibility that the brain makes use of the spatio-temporal structure of spike patterns to encode information. We then consider how such rapid selective neural responses can be generated rapidly through spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) and how these selectivities can be used for visual representation and recognition. Finally, we show how temporal codes and sparse representations may very well arise one from another and explain some of the remarkable features of processing in the visual system.  相似文献

Functional maps arise in developing visual cortex as response selectivities become organized into columnar patterns of population activity. Recent studies of developing orientation and direction maps indicate that both are sensitive to visual experience, but not to the same degree or duration. Direction maps have a greater dependence on early vision, while orientation maps remain sensitive to experience for a longer period of cortical maturation. There is also a darker side to experience: abnormal vision through closed lids produces severe impairments in neuronal selectivity, rendering these maps nearly undetectable. Thus, the rules that govern their formation and the construction of the underlying neural circuits are modulated-for better or worse-by early vision. Direction maps, and possibly maps of other properties that are dependent upon precise conjunctions of spatial and temporal signals, are most susceptible to the potential benefits and maladaptive consequences of early sensory experience.  相似文献

Odors are initially represented in the olfactory bulb (OB) by patterns of sensory input across the array of glomeruli. Although activated glomeruli are often widely distributed, glomeruli responding to stimuli sharing molecular features tend to be loosely clustered and thus establish a fractured chemotopic map. Neuronal circuits in the OB transform glomerular patterns of sensory input into spatiotemporal patterns of output activity and thereby extract information about a stimulus. It is, however, unknown whether the chemotopic spatial organization of glomerular inputs is maintained during these computations. To explore this issue, we measured spatiotemporal patterns of odor-evoked activity across thousands of individual neurons in the zebrafish OB by temporally deconvolved two-photon Ca2+ imaging. Mitral cells and interneurons were distinguished by transgenic markers and exhibited different response selectivities. Shortly after response onset, activity patterns exhibited foci of activity associated with certain chemical features throughout all layers. During the subsequent few hundred milliseconds, however, MC activity was locally sparsened within the initial foci in an odor-specific manner. As a consequence, chemotopic maps disappeared and activity patterns became more informative about precise odor identity. Hence, chemotopic maps of glomerular input activity are initially transmitted to OB outputs, but not maintained during pattern processing. Nevertheless, transient chemotopic maps may support neuronal computations by establishing important synaptic interactions within the circuit. These results provide insights into the functional topology of neural activity patterns and its potential role in circuit function.  相似文献

We investigated the response selectivities of single auditory neurons in the torus semicircularis of Batrachyla antartandica (a leptodactylid from southern Chile) to synthetic stimuli having diverse temporal structures. The advertisement call for this species is characterized by a long sequence of brief sound pulses having a dominant frequency of about 2000 Hz. We constructed five different series of synthetic stimuli in which the following acoustic parameters were systematically modified, one at a time: pulse rate, pulse duration, pulse rise time, pulse fall time, and train duration. The carrier frequency of these stimuli was fixed at the characteristic frequency of the units under study (n=44). Response patterns of TS units to these synthetic call variants revealed different degrees of selectivity for each of the temporal variables. A substantial number of neurons showed preference for pulse rates below 2 pulses s(-1), approximating the values found in natural advertisement calls. Tonic neurons generally showed preferences for long pulse durations, long rise and fall times, and long train durations. In contrast, phasic and phasic-burst neurons preferred stimuli with short duration, short rise and fall times and short train durations.  相似文献

The original GRID/PCA technique was adapted for the development of a tool potentially useful for the plan of a research strategy in rational enzyme design. The use of the MOVE directive of GRID made it possible to partially take into account protein flexibility, and the multivariate analysis was used as an instrument for focusing only on relevant information related to the differences in enzyme substrate selectivities. The comparison of two different penicillin G acylases, from Escherichia coli and from Providentia rettgeri, was used as a case study; these enzymes are very similar and their reported selectivities differ only for a couple of mutations around the active site. The "flexible" GRID/PCA method was able to correctly predict the observed selectivity differences caused not only by mutations of residues of the active site but also by long range effects on substrate selectivity due to sequence mutations on residues not directly involved in substrate recognition.  相似文献

In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) prepared using a multifunctional and a monofunctional monomer were compared with respect to their affinities, selectivities, and imprinting efficiencies for organophosphates. This is of interest because multifunctional monomers have higher affinities than traditional monofunctional monomers for their target analytes and thus should yield MIPs with higher affinities and selectivities. However, polymers containing multifunctional monomer may also have a higher number of unselective, non-templated binding sites. This increase in background binding sites could lead to a decrease in the magnitude of the imprinting effect and in the selectivity of the MIP. Therefore, phosphate selective imprinted and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) were prepared using a novel multifunctional triurea monomer. The binding properties of these polymers were compared with polymers prepared using a monofunctional monourea monomer. The binding affinities and selectivities of the monomers, imprinted polymers, and NIPs were characterized by NMR titration, binding uptake studies, and binding isotherms. MIPs prepared with the triurea monomer showed higher binding affinity and selectivity for the diphenylphosphate anion in organic solvents than the MIPs prepared with the monofunctional monomer. Surprisingly, the binding properties of the NIPs revealed that the polymers prepared using the multifunctional and monofunctional monomers were very similar in affinity and selectivity. Thus, the multifunctional monomers increase not only the affinity of the MIP but also enhance the imprinting effect.  相似文献

We investigated the CuII-catalyzed oxidation of beta-amyloid peptides betaAP10-20 and betaAP40-1 by tandem mass spectrometry and compared oxidation yields and selectivities to those for betaAP1-16, betaAP1-28 and betaAP1-40, which were obtained earlier (26). While betaAP1-16, betaAP1-28 and betaAP1-40 showed an almost exclusive oxidation of His residues to 2-oxo-histidine, the selectivity pattern is changed for betaAP10-20,which shows oxidation of His but also hydroxylation of Tyr and Phe. In contrast to betaAP1-40, the reverse sequence betaAP40-1 shows a strong selectivity for the hydroxylation of Tyr31 while only negligible His oxidation is observed at early time points. These selectivity patterns show the importance of the geometry of the metal-binding site for peptide/protein oxidation. The significantly different characteristic of betaAP1-40 and betaAP40-1 with regard to metal catalyzed processes may be related to the differences in the neurotoxic properties of these sequences.  相似文献

1985-1987年在黑龙江省带岭林区,使用粪便显微组织学分析技术井结合野外啃食调查,对马魔冬季食性进行了研究。结果表明,杨,桦,柳,紫椴是其主要的冬季食物(46.9% ,19.1% , 9.7%、 8.3% )。马鹿对杨、柳、青楷槭有正选择性,对桦、紫椴、刺老芽、接骨木有负选择性.马鹿对它们选择性的强弱顺序为:青槽槭>柳>杨>接骨木>刺者芽>紫椴>桦。被啃食植物中半纤维素的含量和马鹿对它们的选择性之间存在着一定的负相关关系。冬季马鹿并不缺乏蛋白质,而能量对越冬的马鹿可能是一个较为关键的因子。  相似文献

A general approach to synthesis of dihydroxanthone derivatives is described here. In vitro evaluation of these dihydroxanthones demonstrated that some derivatives possess moderate anti-cholinesterase activities and better selectivities than tacrine for acetylcholinesterase over butyrylcholinesterase. Structural effects on anti-cholinesterase activities were also examined, and docking experiments were carried out to provide preliminary understandings of these experimental observations.  相似文献

K+ ions seemingly permeate K-channels rapidly because channel binding sites mimic coordination of K+ ions in water. Highly selective ion discrimination should occur when binding sites form rigid cavities that match K+, but not the smaller Na+, ion size or when binding sites are composed of specific chemical groups. Although conceptually attractive, these views cannot account for critical observations: 1), K+ hydration structures differ markedly from channel binding sites; 2), channel thermal fluctuations can obscure sub-Angstr?m differences in ion sizes; and 3), chemically identical binding sites can exhibit diverse ion selectivities. Our quantum mechanical studies lead to a novel paradigm that reconciles these observations. We find that K-channels utilize a "phase-activated" mechanism where the local environment around the binding sites is tuned to sustain high coordination numbers (>6) around K+ ions, which otherwise are rarely observed in liquid water. When combined with the field strength of carbonyl ligands, such high coordinations create the electrical scenario necessary for rapid and selective K+ partitioning. Specific perturbations to the local binding site environment with respect to strongly selective K-channels result in altered K+/Na+ selectivities.  相似文献

A model series of 5-HT2C antagonists have been prepared by rapid parallel synthesis. These N-substituted phenyl-N′-pyridin-3-yl ureas were found to have a range of 5-HT2C receptor affinities and selectivities over the closely related 5-HT2A receptor. Extrapolation of simple SAR, derived from this set of compounds, to the more active but synthetically more complex 1-(3-pyridyl-carbamoyl)indoline series allowed us to target optimal substitution patterns and identify potent and selective 5-HT2C/2B antagonists.  相似文献
