The first orb web built by newly hatched spiders resembles the adult web in its overall form and structure. However, many details show ontogenetic changes. One possible explanation for these changes is that the tiny early‐instar spiders with their minute brains will make more mistakes and build less ‘perfect’ orb webs than older and larger juveniles and adults. To test this hypothesis, known as the size limitation hypothesis, I analysed orb webs from three developmental stages, spiderlings, juveniles and adult females, in two neotropical orb‐web spiders, the araneid Eustala illicita and the nephilid Nephila clavipes. Neither species showed clear signs of being behaviourally limited or more prone to committing errors as spiderlings than were older juveniles or adults. These findings therefore do not support the size limitation hypothesis in either species. Finally, I looked for evidence of the ‘biogenetic law’, which predicts that juveniles should build less derived orb webs than the adults. Evidence for this was found in E. illicita, but not in N. clavipes.  相似文献

Both laboratory experiments and field observations were usedto examine the prey-attraction hypothesis for the function ofthe silk decoration on the orb web of Octonoba sybotides. Thereflectance spectrum of the decorative silk showed that thedecorations reflect relatively more ultraviolet (UV) light.Choice experiments were conducted using Drosophila melanogaster,a common prey species of the spider, to determine whether webswith silk decoration attract more flies than undecorated webs. The choice experiment showed that webs with silk decorationattract more flies in light that includes UV rays. However, flies choose their flight direction randomly in light withoutUV rays. This suggests that the silk decoration might attract preyinsects that tend to fly toward UV-reflecting objects. Fieldobservations comparing the prey capture rate between webs withand without a silk decoration showed that more prey are caughtin decorated webs. In this study, no difference between thetwo forms of silk decoration, linear and spiral, was detectedeither in prey attraction in the choice experiment or in theprey capture rate in the field observations.  相似文献

Webs of theridiid spiders: construction, structure and evolution   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Understanding the web construction behaviour of theridiid (comb-footed) spiders is fundamental to formulating specific evolutionary hypotheses and predictions regarding the reduction of orb-webs. We describe for the first time in detail the web construction behaviour of Achaearanea tepidariorum , Latrodectus geometricus , Theridion sisyphium and T. varians as well as webs of a range of other theridiids. In our survey we distinguish four major web types. Among webs with gumfooted lines, we distinguish between webs with a central retreat ( Achaearanea -type) and those with a peripheral retreat ( Latrodectus -type). Among webs without gumfooted lines, we distinguish between those which contain viscid silk ( Theridion -type) and those with a sheet-like structure, which do not ( Coleosoma -type). Theridiid gumfoot-webs consist of frame lines that anchor them to surroundings and support threads which possess viscid silk. Building of gumfooted lines constitutes a unique stereotyped behaviour and is most probably homologous for Nesticidae and Theridiidae. Webs remained in place for extended periods and were expanded and repaired, but no regular pattern of replacement was observed. We suggest that the cost of producing and maintaining viscid silk might have led to web reduction, at least in theridiids.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. Females of the false black widow, Steatoda grossa CL Koch (Araneae: Theridiidae), invest significant energy and time weaving cobwebs. We tested the hypothesis that S. grossa females select sites for their webs based, in part, on the presence of con‐ or heterospecific webs, sensing both physical and chemical web cues. In bioassays, we offered female S. grossa a choice between an empty control frame and a frame bearing the web of a conspecific female or that of a female common house spider, Parasteatoda tepidarium CL Koch (Araneae: Theridiidae), recording (1) the time she spent, and (2) the time she spent inactive (a proxy for settling behaviour) on each frame. We also tested the effect of (1) silk micro‐ and macrostructure (wrapped‐up silk or intact web, each semiochemical‐deprived), (2) plastic webs, and (3) silk semiochemical extract on the responses of S. grossa females. Females settled on both con‐ and heterospecific webs and chose test stimuli based on their chemical and physical characteristics. Even plastic webs in cobweb‐like arrangement readily prompted settling behaviour by females. Our results suggest that web architecture, rather than web silk, mediates settling responses by female S. grossa on pre‐existing webs which may provide structural support for a new web and indicate habitat suitability.  相似文献

The web structure and the web spinning process of Latrodectus tredecimguttatus Rossi, Latrodectus pallidus Cambridge and Latrodectus revivensis Shulov have been investigated, particular attention being given to the structure of their catching webs.
The webs of Latrodectus represent a further development of the web-type of Archaeranea tepidariorum . The specific characters of the investigated webs concern the middle layer of their three-layer webs, where more or less regular structures appear.
In the middle layer of L. tredecimguttatus web paths of hexagonal meshes appear.
In the web of L. pallidus and L. revivensis more or less regular radially arranged catching platforms appear, connected with the distant retreat by a long bridge-web.
The lower layer of vertical threads, with viscid droplets on their far ends is spread-out in L. tredecimguttatus and consists of short threads as distinct from the concentrated bundle of high threads in the two other species.
Since L. pallidus and L. revivensis appear usually among vegetation, their restricted catching webs seem to be adaptive adjustment to the biotope.
The concentration of the catching webs brings about improvement as regards prey detection.
The differences in the web structure of L. tredecimguttatus and L. revivensis indicate that their behavioural characters are more distinct than the morphological ones. The different behavioural characters support the view that L. revivensis represents a species different from L. mactans tredecimguttatus .  相似文献

Stegodyphus lineatus (Eresidae) is a desert spider that buildsan aerial capture web on bushes in the Negev desert in southernIsrael. Web building for spiders is costly in energy, time, and risk of predation. Spiders should trade-off these costswith the benefits in terms of prey capture. We tested the hypothesisthat the previous foraging success of the spider influencesthe effort invested in foraging. Specifically, we asked whetheran increase in food intake causes spiders to reduce web renewalactivity and web size. Alternatively, time constraints on foragingand development, resulting from a short growing season, couldinduce spiders to continue foraging even when supplemented withprey. The cost of web building was measured as time and massloss. To build an average size web (about 150 cm2), we calculatedthat a spider requires 6 h and that spiders lose 3%-7% of their weight. In field experiments, spiders responded differently to food supplementationin 2 different years. In 1994, they improved their condition comparedto individuals whose webs were removed to reduce foraging opportunitiesand compared to control spiders. In 1995, spiders tested earlier inthe season than the previous year did not improve their conditionin response to prey supplementation. Nonetheless, in both years, food-supplementedspiders built significantly smaller webs than food-deprived andcontrol spiders. This result was confirmed in a laboratory experiment whereprey intake was controlled. We conclude that for S. lineatus immediateforaging risks outweigh the potential time constraints on foraging.  相似文献

Substrate choice is one of the most important decisions thatsit-and-wait predators must make. Not only may it dictate theprey available but also the cover for the predator which mayconceal it from prey or its own predators. However, while ona particular substrate the behavior and use of that substratemay vary widely. When naïve, newly emerged crab spiderlingsMisumena vatia (Thomisidae) occupied flowering goldenrod Solidagocanadensis, their behavior differed markedly on inflorescenceswith relatively sparse and densely packed flower heads as wellas on experimentally thinned and unthinned inflorescences. Initially, the spiderlings most often hunted at the thinned sites and hidamong the dense flower heads at the unthinned sites, a differencethat disappeared in all broods tested after 2–3 h, possiblybecause of the growing hunger of the initially concealed individuals.Prey capture (dance flies) in the thinned sites initially significantlyexceeded that in unthinned sites but subsequently did not differ. However, spiderlings encountered their principal predator, thejumping spider Pelegrina insignis, significantly more oftenon unthinned than thinned inflorescences. Even though usagepatterns initially differed strikingly, spiderlings did notdiffer in their rates of quitting the two types of sites. Theseresults suggest a trade-off between foraging and predator avoidancethat changes in response to increasing hunger over time.  相似文献

Anelosimus studiosus juveniles usually remain in their natalwebs with their mothers until maturity, forming temporary coloniesin which individuals cooperate in web maintenance and preycapture. In a semi-natural environment, we experimentally removedjuveniles from their natal webs at mid-development. In thecontrol group, the juveniles were immediately replaced in theirnatal webs; in the experimental removal group, the juvenileswere not replaced and a sample of them were allowed to buildindividual webs. Colonies and solitary juveniles were exposedto natural prey densities and censused regularly for numbersand stages of spiders, and for prey capture. On average, juvenilesin colonies survived longer, developed faster, and had more resources per individual than did solitary juveniles. However, some of the solitary juveniles obtained more resources thanindividual juveniles in colonies. Mothers in the control groupsurvived longer and produced second broods earlier than mothersin the experimental removal group. Within the control group, older and larger colonies captured more and larger prey. Larger colonies had a lower coefficient of variation in prey capturedper juvenile. Overall, delayed juvenile dispersal benefitsboth juveniles and mothers.  相似文献

Do stabilimenta in orb webs attract prey or defend spiders?   总被引:7,自引:2,他引:5
Orb-weaving spiders are ideal organisms for the study of conflictbetween behavioral investments in foraging and defense becausetheir webs provide physical manifestations of those investments. We examined the impact of including stabilimenta, designs ofbright-white noncapture silk, at the center of orb webs forforaging and defense in Argiope aurantia. Our findings suggestthat stabilimentum building is a defensive behavior, supportingthe "web advertisement" hypothesis that the high visibilityof stabilimenta can prevent birds from flying through webs.Yet, spiders often do not include stabilimenta in their webs, indicating that a serious cost is associated with them. We alsoshow, through comparison of paired webs with and without stabilimenta, that stabilimenta reduce the prey capture success of spidersby almost 30%. This demonstrates the potential impact that defensivebehaviors of spiders can have on their foraging success andsuggests that much of the variation in stabilimenta may be accountedfor by a cost—benefit trade-off made when including stabilimentain webs.  相似文献

Most Anelosimus eximius live in colonies, but a few females emigrate short distances and establish small, individual webs. Field studies were conducted on one colony and nearby smaller webs in order to describe communal activities and division of labour, and to note costs and benefits of remaining in the parental colony and emigrating. Adult and juvenile females repaired the web and captured prey. Adult females, rather than juveniles, cared for egg sacs and fed young. When colonial egg sacs were abundant, females moved from sac to sac. Several colonial females regurgitated food to spiderlings which had recently emerged from a particular sac. In smaller webs inhabited by two or three females, the mother cared for the sac but all females fed the young by regurgitation. Males rarely participated in communal activities. Advantages of colony living include protection from predators, the availability of large prey and, in the event of a female's death, the care of her egg sac and feeding of her young. Cannibalism of the egg sac is a potential cost of coloniality, affecting about 10–20% of colonial sacs. Cannibalism was not observed in the smaller webs. However, the costs of emigrating are very high: most of the solitary females disappeared, leading to interspecific predation on their eggs and young.  相似文献

Spider web research bridges ethology, ecology, functional morphology, material science, development, genetics, and evolution. Recent work proposes the aerial orb web as a one‐time key evolutionary innovation that has freed spider‐web architecture from substrate constraints. However, the orb has repeatedly been modified or lost within araneoid spiders. Modifications include not only sheet‐ and cobwebs, but also ladder webs, which secondarily utilize the substrate. A recent nephilid species level phylogeny suggests that the ancestral nephilid web architecture was an arboricolous ladder and that round aerial webs were derived. Because the web biology of the basalmost Clitaetra and the derived Nephila are well understood, the present study focuses on the webs of the two phylogenetically intervening genera, Herennia and Nephilengys, to establish ontogenetic and macroevolutionary patterns across the nephilid tree. We compared juvenile and adult webs of 95 Herennia multipuncta and 143 Nephilengys malabarensis for two measures of ontogenetic allometric web changes: web asymmetry quantified by the ladder index, and hub asymmetry quantified by the hub displacement index. We define a ‘ladder web’ as a vertically elongated orb exceeding twice the length over width (ladder index ≥ 2) and possessing (sub)parallel rather than round side frames. Webs in both genera allometrically grew from orbs to ladders, more so in Herennia. Such allometric web growth enables the spider to maintain its arboricolous web site. Unexpectedly, hub asymmetry only increased significantly in heavy‐bodied Nephilengys females, and not in Herennia, challenging the commonly invoked gravity hypothesis. The findings obtained in the present study support the intrageneric uniformness of nephilid webs, with Herennia etruscilla webs being identical to H. multipuncta. The nephilid web evolution suggests that the ancestor of Nephila reinvented the aerial orb web because the orb arises at a much more inclusive phylogenetic level, and all intervening nephilids retained the secondarily acquired substrate‐dependent ladder web. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 849–866.  相似文献

Late Cretaceous amber from La Garnache (France, Vendée) contains filamentous networks that have all the characteristics of spider webs. Using methods of classic and confocal microscopy, the web architecture and the thread structure are described. The geometry of the webs preserved in amber is presented in 3D imaging. Unlike most of the spider webs identified in amber, there are no regular radiating webs growing in two dimensions characteristic of the well-known orb web. A number of the characters would correspond to the apparently irregular organization of cob-type web or sheet web. By using confocal microscopy, we can highlight the preserved autofluorescence of spider silk proteins and new characters are proposed to identify the spider webs or fragments of webs in amber.  相似文献

summary The effect of gravity on the web building behaviour of the common garden spiderAraneus diadematus was studied in three ways: (i) frames with partially completed vertical webs were swivelled into a horizontal position, (ii) by rotating frames with spiders in a vertical klinostat (1 rpm), and (iii) by vertically rotating a partially completed web treadmill fashion keeping the building animal in a certain position in space.(i) In the horizontal, radial wheels are not constructed, however, a more or less irregular spiral is added to a completed wheel; (ii) in the klinostat the radial wheel lacks the up/down distinction of normal webs, and the spiral is irregular; (iii) in the treadmill the spiral course is abnormal, and the degree of deviation depends on the position of the animal. If the body axis is parallel to gravity the spiral path deviates to both sides of the norm. In ag perpendicular body position the path deviates predominantly to one side, spiralling sharply inwards towards the hub. The observations suggest that the cyclic changes in the body position of spiral-buildingAraneus are an important component of the animal's orientation during this phase of web-construction.  相似文献

Spideis of similar miss but of two different species Araneusdiadematus Cl. and Argiope aurantia L., build webs which havesimilar geometric patterns, but which differ in relative proportionsand thread number. Within species, webs may also differreliably, presumably on a genetic basis. Fine detail of the web undergoeschange throughout the lifetime of the spider, different formale and female; these changes are not simply response to thegrowing weight of the spider. Relatively simple restraints, such as availability of material for thread, result in adaptationsof web-building which may at first appear to be based upon buildingexperience, but which are in fact independent of it.  相似文献

Summary Although spider webs may be effective in trapping prey, they require energy for construction. The design of webs varies in complexity from species to species. I assume that the energetic cost of web construction is significantly different among web types or species. This cost may constrain foraging tactics, particularly web relocation, because web relocation also requires energy to make a new web. To clarify the effect of the cost of web construction on web relocation, the energy cost of web construction and the rate of web relocation were estimated for the spider Agelena limbata. This spider constructs a sheet-funnel web consisting of a tight mesh of silk threads. This web was costly in terms of the energy needed for construction, which ranged from 9 to 19 times the daily maintenance energy. The daily rate of web relocation was below 1%, indicating high web-site tenacity. Relocation rates of species which built different types of web were compared in relation to cost of web construction. Orbweavers, which produce less costly webs than sheet-funnel weavers, relocate webs more frequently. Sheetweavers, which make webs of intermediate cost, appear to relocate webs more frequently than sheetfunnel weavers but less frequently than orbweavers. These results suggest that the energy cost of web construction is important in determining the frequency of web relocation.  相似文献

After the spider, Zygiella x-notata Cl. has been enticed toleave the retreat and catch a fly in a web turned upside-down,it takes a relatively long time to return to the retreat. Thereturn-time is divided into periods of active searching andmotionlessness. Several factors have been found to shorten significantlythe searching and motionless time; among them are youth of theanimals, small number of webs previously built, the positionof the web before and between experiments, and repetition oftrials at certain time intervals. The observed phenomenon andvariations in time are explained in terms of current conceptsof memory function and information processing.  相似文献

The agonistic behaviour of adult female T. atrica increases with increasing age of spiderlings until 80 days post-emergence, then decreases. In all cases, cannibalism of spiderlings increases markedly after completion of their pre-dispersal period with a correlation between the switch of behaviour, from tolerance to cannibalism, and a modification of individual’s cuticular compounds. Experiments that compare spiderlings weight and mobility indicate that female agonistic behaviour are always low with spiderlings in pre-dispersal period, and high with spiderlings in post-dispersal period. Female reproductive state and the weight/mobility of spiderlings are not the only factors controlling the adult female’s agonistic behaviour towards spiderlings on her web, as tactochemical information plays an important role in modulating agonistic behaviour after close contact between female spiders and spiderlings. The agonistic behaviour of females appears to correspond with a change in the increase of polar compound levels (methylesters and fatty acids) and the decrease of apolar compound levels (hydrocarbons) in spiderlings of different ages.  相似文献
