The numbers, age structure, and morphological variation of the cestode Proteocephalus longicollis from whitefish of a natural water body (Kamennoe Lake) and those of Kostomuksha Lake polluted with wastes of the mining industry (northern Karelia) have been studied. In the polluted water body, a high infestation of whitefish and domination of larval stages in the structure of the parasite population have been established. It is shown that under conditions of pollution, only one of the variations of scolex signs dominates in the structure of phenotypic diversity. The size indices of cestodes are reliably smaller as compared with cestodes from the natural water body. The data obtained indicate that technogenic pollution determines a decrease in the intrapopulation diversity of P. longiocollis, and a decrease in the values of morphometric characters indicates inhibition of the morphophysiological state of individuals.  相似文献

The food of five whitefish stocks Coregonus lavaretus planted in Lake Vuokalanjärvi consisted mainly of zooplankton and insects taken from the water surface. The amount of benthic food in the diet of the two sparsely gill-rakered (23 and 28 rakers) stocks increased from the age of 2 years onwards. The growth of whitefish was slow in all stocks. The densely gill-rakered stock (50–51 rakers) originating from the same lake system as Lake Vuokalanjärvi grew faster than the other stocks, and the food consumption of 4- and 5-year-old fish belonging to this stock was nearly double compared with the other stocks. The habitat choice of the whitefish differed between the stocks even in the densely-rakered stocks classified as the same form. A stock with flexible habitat use and feeding habits is most likely to succeed. Introducing whitefish stocks from distant areas is not advisable.  相似文献

Molecular genetic analysis of some ecological forms of whitefish belonging to the Coregonus lavaretus (L.) complex from different water bodies of Siberia revealed a high degree of differentiation between them. On the basis of the analysis of the mitochondrial DNA protein-coding ND1 gene, it was demonstrated that the previously described ecological forms of C. anaulorum, Yenisei River whitefish, or Issatschenko’s whitefish (C. fluviatilis), and cisco-like whitefish from Lake Baunt were good biological species. Moreover, each ecological form was represented by a number of phylogenetic lineages, one of which was species-specific. The remaining lineages were characterized by the mitochondrial DNA of another whitefish species, usually, the most common in each geographic region. The results of genetic analysis demonstrated that the formation of modern ecological forms of Siberian pidschian-like whitefish was accompanied by natural introgressive hybridization. It is suggested that most of the modern pidschian-like whitefish species originated as a result of reticulate evolution.  相似文献

About 20 ovaries of the whitefish 'Blaufelchen' ( Coregonus lavaretus L.) of Lake Constance (Bodensee) were collected annually from 1964-1991. Absolute and relative fecundity peaked in the early 1980s, lagging about 2 years behind the maximum of total-P in the water (during the circulation period). Out of the biological time-series of Lake Constance, whitefish fecundity is the only one known to follow the phosphorus curve, and this may be the first time-series documented case of parallel trend reversal in the trophic state of a lake and fish biology. It is concluded that fish fecundity serves, at best, as an unspecific monitor of the overall well-being of the fish.  相似文献

In 1984 the County of Viborg introduced a large-scale programme to improve the water quality in Hjarbæk Fjord, a freshwater fjord cut off from the sea in 1964. Measures were taken to reduce the discharges of nutrients from various sources. To reduce the nuisance of chironomids a large release of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) was incorporated in the programme. The effects of these efforts on the fish, benthos and plankton communities were studied during a period of five years. The whitefish established a self-reproducing population with a very good growth rate, and may have created quantitative and qualitative changes in the plankton community. Observed changes in the benthos community may also be related to predation by whitefish. The study did not confirm that whitefish could actually control the population of chironomids and diminish, thus, the nuisance caused by them. The stocking of whitefish created an exploitable fish stock of a valuable fish species in the hypertrophic Hjarbæk Fjord.

The impact of water pollution on the content of lipid components of the liver and eggs of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus is investigated. The content of triacylglycerols (TAG), sphingomyelin (SPM), phosphatidylinositol (PI), and phosphatidylserine (PS) is higher in the liver of whitefish from polluted waters being a part of adaptogenous reactions (modification of permeability of biomembranes, of activity of membrane enzymes, etc.) providing a possibility of the survival of fish under unfavorable ecological factors. The lipid spectra of whitefish gonads are more stable in comparison with the liver. This may be related to protection of the reproductive system from external influences.  相似文献

Since 2013, the pelagic zone of Upper Lake Constance (ULC) has been subject to a massive invasion of the non-native three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, 1758). Data from monthly monitoring of pelagic whitefish (Coregonus wartmanni Bloch, 1784) were used to compare weight-at-age and abundance of pelagic whitefish for years before (1997–2012) and after the invasion (2013–2015). Growth and abundance of pelagic whitefish is shown to be heavily influenced by stickleback presence. Mean autumn weight-at-age of whitefish decreased by 33.3% after the invasion took place and a significant decline in autumn CPUE in otherwise unfished cohorts of the population was also recorded. The results imply direct effects of stickleback presence on pelagic whitefish, including interspecific competition for food leading to reduced growth and survival, and predation of eggs and larvae, hampering recruitment. These observations coincide with a sharp decline in whitefish yield. In conclusion, this study shows that the invasion of stickleback has substantially altered the pelagic fish community of ULC, with severe consequences for commercial fisheries.  相似文献

In larval and juvenile whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus L.) from Lake Constance, Germany, the otolith increments are deposited daily, whereas daily deposition could not be confirmed in larval whitefish from Lake Pyhäselkä, Finland. The calcium concentration in Lake Constance is high (around 1.3 m m ), while calcium deficiency is typical for Finnish lakes (around 0.15 m m ). Therefore, the hypothesis that the distinctness of daily otolith increments in whitefish is related to water calcium content was tested by rearing three groups of Lake Constance whitefish in water of 0.2, 1.3 and 4.7 m m Ca. The eggs were incubated in lake water (1.3 m m Ca), and the larvae were acclimated to the experimental calcium concentrations on the day of hatching. After 39 days of ad libitum- feeding with Artemia nauplii, the three groups did not differ significantly in total length, wet and dry weight, and otolith length and width. The daily increments were easily recognizable, and contrast between dark (D)- and light (L)-zones was the same in the fish of all test groups. For the experimental set-up of this study, and particularly the range of calcium concentrations tested, the hypothesis that water calcium content influences the distinctness of daily otolith increments was rejected.  相似文献

Water quality in 16 Finnish lakes did not affect directly densely gill-rakered whitefish growth, except possibly in an acid (pH 4·9) lake, Iso Lehmaälampi, where acidity may have retarded the growth of whitefish. The density of roach affected whitefish growth in the second year of life: highest growth rates were in lakes without a roach population and lowest growth rates in lakes having strong roach populations. Competition by vendace also retarded the growth of young whitefish. The efficient mass removal of roach from a eutrophic lake was considered to have increased the growth rate of young whitefish. It is suggested that an examination of the fish species composition and relative abundance, as well as the growth of whitefish, can be used as an aid in predicting the success of stocking with whitefish.  相似文献

This comparative study explores how low temperatures affect the mortality and growth of first generation hatchery-reared progeny of subarctic populations of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) and European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.). Replicate fish groups where held under simulated natural light regimes (70°N) at three constant temperatures (1, 3 and 6°C). The mortality of Arctic charr was low (≤1.4%) at all temperature treatments, whereas the mortality of whitefish increased with decreasing temperature from 6% at 6°C to 33% at 1°C. The Arctic charr exhibited higher growth rates than whitefish at all three temperature regimes. All groups of Arctic charr increased in weight, whereas whitefish held at 1°C did not gain weight throughout the experimental period of 133 days. Arctic charr exhibited a large intraspecific variability in growth leading to large variations in size-structure, whereas whitefish in contrast showed very homogenous growth and size-structure patterns; a dissimilarity probably related to species-specific differences in antagonistic behaviour. Evidently, Arctic charr are more cold water adapted than whitefish and are able to maintain growth at extremely low temperatures. Arctic charr thus appear to be the most suitable species for aquaculture at low water temperatures.  相似文献

The recent state of the population of round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum from the Anadyr River is described. Age composition of the catches of round whitefish remained almost without changes over the 35-year observation period. During this period, the proportion of large fishes (>380 mm in body length) slightly decreased, and the average body length of sexually mature individuals had become smaller. Possible reasons of interannual changes of the size-age composition of the catches and growth rate of the fish are discussed. A main factor determining growth variation of the fish is the abundance of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta that migrated. The abundance of the round whitefish of the Anadyr River remains at a stable level (except the area of Markovo village) over a long time, and this population is hardly exploited.  相似文献

If a pelagic ecosystem is invaded by an efficient planktivorous fish, competition theory predicts that habitat and/or diet segregation should occur if the invader and native planktivores are to co-exist. We compared the diet and pelagic habitat use between invading vendace (Coregonus albula) and two native morphs of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) in three subarctic lakes located within the same watercourse. No clear vertical habitat segregation was found as vendace prevailed throughout the entire depth range. Zooplankton generally dominated the diet of all three coregonids. No obvious resource partitioning was found in two of the lakes, while in the third lake the diets of whitefish and vendace differed significantly from each other. Here, the predominant pelagic whitefish morph fed extensively on water mites whereas vendace mainly consumed surface insects and to some extent small fish, apparently as a result of highly depleted zooplankton resources. The results suggest that various levels of resource depletion following the vendace invasion caused the observed differences between the lakes, indicating that different levels of resource partitioning were associated with dissimilar competition intensities. At present, coexistence of these congeneric species seems to be possible, although the vendace invasion has apparently resulted in a challenging and unstable situation for the planktivorous whitefish.  相似文献

Past mining and smelting activities have resulted in metal polluted environments all over the world, but long-term monitoring data is often scarce, especially in higher trophic levels. In this study we used bird (Parus major and Ficedula hypoleuca) excrement to monitor metal pollution in the terrestrial environment following 16 years of continuously reduced emissions from a copper/nickel smelter in Finland. In the early 1990s, lead and cadmium concentrations dropped significantly in excrement, but the reduction did not directly reflect the changes in atmospheric emission from the smelter. This is likely due to a continuous contribution of metals also from the soil pool. We conclude that bird excrement can be used to assess changes in the environment as a whole but not specifically changes in atmospheric emission. Inter-annual variation in excrement concentration of especially copper and nickel demonstrates the importance of long-term monitoring to discern significant trends.  相似文献

A population–genetic study of five coregonid fish species has been carried out using 30 enzyme loci. The species under study included whitefish, a natural hybrid of vendace and least cisco, inconnu, peled, and Arctic cisco. The investigation revealed a low intraspecific genetic differentiation of the abovementioned species from Lower Pechora River and Usa River, which is the main tributary in the Pechora River basin, where coregonid fishes migrate to spawn. Presumably, whitefish, vendace, and inconnu inhabiting the main channels of Lower Pechora and Usa rivers are represented here by introgressive populations of species formed by a mix of discrete evolutionary lineages originating from geographically separated Late Quaternary refugia. Some lineages of whitefish, vendace, and inconnu from the West Siberian periglacial lake came to Eastern Europe together with the last migration wave of Siberian species to the west, including peled, broad whitefish, and Arctic cisco, during the Middle Weichselian glaciation (60000–50000 years ago), while in the Eastern European Periglacial refugium (Lake Komi), local lineages of these species had survived. The periglacial Lake Komi has probably been located on the Pechora Plain since early Weichselian glaciation (90000–80000 years ago), and the studied whitefish specimens from Upper Pechora River are probably the purest descendants of the periglacial race of whitefish from Lake Komi. This assumption is supported by the data on the high level of genetic differentiation between the whitefish of Upper Pechora and Lower Pechora (D N = 0.005), as well as by the pattern of allele distribution in some polymorphic loci. In our opinion, the ecologic and genetic differentiation of vendace in the Pechora River basin is also connected with the interaction between two evolutionary lineages that originated from independent periglacial refugia.  相似文献

We collected lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis and round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum from the main basin of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America to investigate details of diet and feeding tactics of these species in different seasons. Lake whitefish supports important commercial fisheries in Lake Huron and both species make use of habitats near the Bruce Nuclear Power Development, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Most fish of both species showed generalist feeding behavior, but some lake whitefish appeared to show specialist prey selection. The invasive spiny water flea Bythotrephes longimanus was an important component of the diet of both species. There was considerable dietary overlap between the whitefish species, but the ecological implications of these dietary overlaps are mitigated by the fact that dominant prey species differed in most seasons. We conclude that the potential for ecologically significant interactions between lake whitefish and round whitefish resulting from competition for similar benthic food resources in the main basin of Lake Huron is probably low [Current Zoology 56 (1): 109-117 2010].  相似文献

Aquatic ecosystems in a 17,000 km2 area around Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, have been affected by the atmospheric deposition of pollutants from nearly a century of operations at the Sudbury area metal smelters. Effects were most severe in the lakes closest to the smelters which historically received very high deposition of both acid and metal particulates. After smelter emissions were greatly reduced in the 1970‘s, evidence began to emerge of improvements in lake water quality, and some recovery of biological communities, and the emphasis of Sudbury area monitoring programs changed from the assessment of damage to the tracking of recovery patterns. Further reductions in smelter emissions during the1990‘s have been accompanied by continuing improvements in aquatic habitat quality, but the evaluation of lake responses to emission controls is complicated by the interaction of lake acidity and metal concentrations with other factors. Weather-related variations in storage and release of sulphur from lake catchments appear to greatly influence chemical recovery. Despite the general water quality improvements observed to date, some lakes are still highly acidic and elevated levels of copper and nickel persist in the water and sediments of many lakes. Severely damaged biological communities have been slow to recover, probably reflecting a combination of continuing habitat quality limitations and restricted opportunities for dispersal. Adaptive phenotypic divergence of sympatric morphs in a single species may have significant evolutionary consequences. In the present study, phenotypic impacts of predator on zooplankton prey populations were compared in two northern Finnish lakes; one with an allopatric whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), population and the other with three sympatric whitefish populations. First, we examined whether there were phenotypic associations with specific niches in allopatric and sympatric whitefish. Second, trait utility (i.e. number of gillrakers) of allopatric and sympatric whitefish in utilizing a pelagic resource was explored by comparing predator avoidance of prey, prey size in environment, and prey size in predator diet. The allopatric living large sparsely rakered (LSR) whitefish morph, was a generalist using both pelagic and benthic niches. In contrast, sympatric living whitefish morphs were specialized: LSR whitefish was a littoral benthivore, small sparsely rakered whitefish was a profundal benthivore and densely rakered (DR) whitefish was a pelagic planktivore. In the lake with allopatric whitefish, zooplankton prey did not migrate vertically to avoid predation whereas, in the lake with sympatric whitefish, all important prey taxa migrated significantly. Using gillnets and trap nets, we examined the spatial distribution, diel movements, and environmental tolerances of pygmy whitefish, Prosopium coulterii, in a small boreal lake in north-central British Columbia. Most gillnets were set below the thermocline but we also fished a shore net in the littoral zone. During the ice-free season (May to November) there was a strong diel onshore–offshore movement: during the day pygmy whitefish were offshore and below the thermocline (water temperatures of 4–6°C) but at night they were inshore and above the thermocline (water temperatures of 12–18°C). This onshore–offshore movement occurred close to the bottom and, regardless of where they were caught, most fish were <4 m off the bottom. Oxygen concentrations in most of the hypolimnion dropped to <5.0 mg l−1 in June and by late August to <1.0 mg l−1; indicating pygmy whitefish can tolerate low oxygen conditions. The catch of pygmy whitefish in gillnets set below the thermocline was highly skewed: 53% of the nets were empty, 37% caught 18 or less fish, and 10% caught 70% of the total catch (742 fish). Trap nets produced similarly skewed results: most trap net sets caught no pygmy whitefish but one set caught over 2,000 individuals. Developing eggs of vendace (Coregonus albula L.) and whitefish (C. lavaretus L.) were experimentally delayed in hatching by incubation at low water temperature (1–2°). Some eggs were taken during this period to a water temperature which was gradually raised up to 8° to provoke mass hatching of embryos. The pattern of free amino acids was followed in eggs incubated at both temperatures. During a 56 days period, the content of several essential amino acids significantly decreased in eggs of both species. For instance, the lysine content dropped from 703 to 270 mg/g dry matter and the arginine content from 257 to 13.3 mg/100 g dry matter in whitefish eggs. A similar pattern of decreasing level of free amino acids in embryonated ova up to hatching was characteristic for essential amino acids and serine. Methionine was exceptional; its level remained approximately the same. On the other hand, non-essential amino acids showed a significant increase in concentration during the experimental period. For instance, the glycine level increased 4.9 and 2.1 times in whitefish and vendace eggs, respectively. Transfer of eggs to 8° accelerated the decrease of nearly all free amino acids before hatching. The consequence of such amino acid metabolism for newly hatched larvae is discussed.  相似文献

The swimming performance of two fish species, the brown trout and whitefish, having initially different swimming strategies, was measured after nine different training programs in order to relate the effects of exercise on Ca2+ handling and oxidative capacity of swimming muscles. The time to 50% fatigue was measured during the training period, and compared with the density of dihydropyridine (DHP) and ryanodine (Ry) receptors and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and phosphorylase activity determined by histochemical analysis of the swimming muscles. Overall, both trained brown trout and whitefish had superior swimming performance as compared to control ones. Interestingly, the training programs had different effect on the two species studied since brown trout achieved the highest swimming performance, swimming against the water flow velocity of 2 BL s−1 while among whitefish the best efficiency was seen after training with lower swimming velocities. Training also induced a significant increase in DHP and Ry receptor density in both species. Generally, in brown trout the most notable increase in the receptor densities was observed in red muscle sections from the fish swimming for 6 weeks against water currents of 1 BL s−1 (DHPR 176.5 ± 7.7% and RyR 231.4 ± 11.8%) and white muscle sections against 2 BL s−1 (DHPR 129.6 ± 12.4% and RyR 161.9 ± 15.5%). In whitefish the most prominent alterations were noted in samples from both muscle types after 6 weeks of training against water current of 1.5 BL s−1 (DHPR 167.1 ± 16.9% and RyR 190.4 ± 19.4%). Finally, after all the training regimens the activity of SDH increased but the phosphorylase activity decreased significantly in both the species. To conclude, our findings demonstrate an improved swimming performance and enhanced Ca2+ regulation and oxidative capacity after training. Moreover, there seems to be a connection between the swimming performance and receptor levels, especially in white swimming muscles of different fish species, regardless of their initially deviant swimming behaviours. However, depending on the training regimen the divergent swimming behaviours do cause a different response, resulting in the most prominent adaptational changes in the receptor levels of red muscle samples with lower swimming velocities in brown trout and with higher ones in whitefish.  相似文献
