We examined distribution, habitat, and behavior of rockfishes, Sebastes spp., with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in coastal waters <90m deep of southeastern Alaska from 1998 to 2000. We identified black, S. melanops, canary, S. pinniger, China, S. nebulosus, copper, S. caurinus, dusky, S. ciliatus, harlequin, S. variegatus, Puget Sound, S. emphaeus, quillback, S. maliger, redstripe, S. proriger, rosethorn, S. helvomaculatus, silvergray, S. brevispinis, tiger, S. nigrocinctus, yelloweye, S. ruberrimus, and yellowtail, S. flavidus, rockfish. Quillback and dusky rockfish were the most widely distributed species, China and harlequin rockfish were the least widely distributed species. Species richness was greater at sites on or near the outer coast than at sites in more inside, sheltered waters. Most (>75%) observations of rockfish were over complex bottoms of boulder and rock or in vertical bedrock wall habitats. Few rockfish were observed over soft bottoms with no relief. Median depth of observation was 30m for black, copper, dusky, and yellowtail rockfish and >30m for all other species. Median temperature of observation ranged from 6.1°C for harlequin rockfish to 9.4°C for black rockfish. Size of fish was positively correlated (p 0.036) with depth for dusky, quillback, and yelloweye rockfish. Species often observed alone were China (67%), copper (46%), quillback (46%), and rosethorn (43%) rockfish. Most (70%) observations of harlequin, Puget Sound, silvergray, tiger, and yelloweye rockfish were in mixed species assemblages. When first observed, the behavior of most rockfish species was swimming or hovering. Notable exceptions were China, harlequin, rosethorn, and tiger rockfish; 33–57% were resting on bottom or in a hole or crevice.  相似文献

Conventional and electronic tags were used to investigate social segregation, distribution, movements and migrations of salmon sharks Lamna ditropis in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Sixteen salmon sharks were tagged with satellite transmitters and 246 with conventional tags following capture, and were then released in Prince William Sound during summer 1999 to 2001. Most salmon sharks sexed during the study were female (95%), suggesting a high degree of sexual segregation in the region. Salmon sharks congregated at adult Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. migration routes and in bays near Pacific salmon spawning grounds in Prince William Sound during July and August. Adult Pacific salmon were the principal prey in 51 salmon shark stomachs collected during summer months in Prince William Sound, but the fish appeared to be opportunistic predators and consumed sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria, gadids, Pacific herring Clupea pallasi, rockfish Sebastes spp. and squid (Teuthoidea) even when adult Pacific salmon were locally abundant. As Pacific salmon migrations declined in late summer, the salmon sharks dispersed; some continued to forage in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska into autumn and winter months, while others rapidly moved south‐east thousands of kilometres toward the west coasts of Canada and the U.S. Three movement modes are proposed to explain the movement patterns observed in the Gulf of Alaska and eastern North Pacific Ocean: ‘focal foraging’ movements, ‘foraging dispersals’ and ‘direct migrations’. Patterns of salmon shark movement are possibly explained by spatio‐temporal changes in prey quality and density, an energetic trade‐off between prey availability and water temperature, intra‐specific competition for food and reproductive success. Transmissions from the electronic tags also provided data on depth and water temperatures experienced by the salmon sharks. The fish ranged from the surface to a depth of 668 m, encountered water temperatures from 4·0 to 16·8° C and generally spent the most time above 40 m depth and between 6 and 14° C (60 and 73%, respectively).  相似文献

The cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi (Schultz), is the most important ornamental fish exported from Brazil and Colombia. During the transport of this species, Amazon fishermen usually add unmeasured amounts of tetracycline and/or table salt to the water in an effort to mitigate stress and mortality. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of salt, the antibiotic tetracycline and the ammonia chelating agent Amquel® in the transport of this species. Cardinal tetras were submitted to a 24‐h boat transport in water containing either tetracycline hydrochloride (2.5 mg L?1), Amquel® (26.41 mg L?1), tetracycline + table salt (2.5 mg L?1 + 66.67 mg L?1), or additive‐free water (control treatment). Whole‐body cortisol measurements showed that fish transported with any water additive had lower cortisol levels compared to control. However, based on ionoregulatory and water quality parameters, the addition of tetracycline, Amquel® or the combination tetracycline + salt to the water of transport of cardinal tetras is not recommended when compared to control. Although Amquel® helped stabilize the pH and diminish total ammonia levels in the transport water, this compound dramatically increased net Na+ and Cl? uptake, and therefore compromised cardinal tetra ionoregulation.  相似文献

Between September 2006 and April 2007 the authors transported one 0.9 m wingspan Mobula mobular from Olhão (South of Portugal) to Valencia (East of Spain), 12 ∼1.0 m long Argyrosomus regius to Tarragona (Northeast of Spain) and four ∼0.4 m long Mola mola to Atlanta (GA, USA). These journeys had a total “water to water” duration of 17, 22 and 33 hr, respectively. The first two transports were conducted by road whereas the third involved a combination of road and air travel. Water quality parameters—specifically dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and ammonia—were monitored continuously throughout the duration of the trips and were maintained at optimum levels through the use of battery‐powered filtration and chemical supplements. All animals arrived alive and well at their destinations. This paper reports on the specific transport regime adopted in each case and provides some insight for potential improvements in future similar transports. A study was carried out between 1999 and 2001 in Degeya, Lufuka and Mpanga forests in central Uganda to determine the regeneration, density and size class distribution of trees used for making drums. Thirty sample plots measuring 20 × 20 m were established at 250 m intervals along transects laid in the northeast direction across swamps, mid‐slopes and hilltops. Diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees and number and species of seedlings, saplings and poles of six tree species were determined. The tree species were: Antiaris toxicaria, Erythrina excelsa, Ficus mucuso, Ficus exasperata, Funtumia africana and Polyscias fulva. Antiaris toxicaria was the most abundant and P. fulva was the least abundant in the forests. The intensity of use and concentration on a limited number of tree species have resulted in localized exploitation with potential knock‐on effects on the forests’ health. On‐farm tree planting by local communities should be encouraged to supply logs for making drums and reduce pressure on the forests.  相似文献

We studied in details the ammonia or free amino acids (AA) effects on proteolytic activity of three ruminal bacteria: enzymatic activities and protein breakdown products were measured at the end of the exponential growth phase. In Streptococcus bovis the simultaneous uptake of ammonia and probably small peptides induced a decline in total proteolytic activity as a result of changes in endopeptidasic activities. With free AA, the tendency for the endopeptidasic activities to specialise was more evident and the total proteolytic activity decreased too. In Prevotella albensis, the inhibition of proteolysis with free AA was linked to the disappearance of free endopeptidases, to the specialization of cell-associated endopeptidases and to the decrease in exopeptidases. The decrease of proteolysis in P. albensis when ammonia was added was more difficult to interpret. With ammonia or AA Butyrivibro fibrisolvens developed a distinct behavior of those expressed by the other species: the increase of the total proteolytic activity could be explained by a better balance of the endopeptidases expressed. It then clearly appeared that the expression of the proteolytic activities are linked to the nature and/or to the quantity of the nitrogen source. This leads each species to adopt its own nutritional strategy in order to adapt to the environmental conditions of the ruminal ecosystem. Received: 2 July 2001 / Accepted: 28 September 2001  相似文献

The time of the first cleavage of bovine zygotes during in vitro culture can affect the rate of development and cell number of the blastocysts. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the timing of first cleavage on the cryosurvival of the resulting blastocysts. Following standard IVM and IVF, zygotes were cultured in modified synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF), with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS) added 48 hr post insemination, in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2, 5% O2 and 90% N2. Embryos which cleaved by 24, 27 30, 33, or 36 hr after insemination (IVF) were harvested and further cultured to the blastocyst stage (day 7 or day 8 post IVF). All developing blastocysts on days 7 and 8 were classified into three groups and were cryopreserved by vitrification. Group A consisted of blastocysts (<150 μm, small blastocysts); group B consisted of expanded or hatching blastocysts (>150 μm, large blastocysts); and group C consisted of morphologically poor quality blastocysts. The vitrification solution consisted of 6.5 M glycerol and 6% bovine serum albumin in PBS (VS3a). Thawed embryos were cultured further and survival was defined as the re‐expansion and maintenance of the blastocoel over 24, 48, and 72 hr, respectively. Overall survival and hatching at 72 hr post‐thawing was higher in blastocysts formed by day 7 than those formed by day 8 (60% vs. 40% survival; 63% vs. 45% hatching). Large blastocysts from day‐7 and day‐8 groups survived significantly better than small or poor quality blastocysts (76% vs. 63% and 31%; 72% vs. 30% and 26%, respectively; P < 0.05). Day‐7 blastocysts from the 27‐ and 30‐hr cleavage groups survived significantly better than those from the 36‐hr group (63% and 66% vs. 25%, P < 0.05). Day‐8 blastocysts from later cleaved (30 hr) zygotes had a higher survival than the 27‐hr cleavage groups (52% vs. 26%, P < 0.05). These results indicate that the day of blastocyst appearance, developmental stage, and timing of the first cleavage post‐insemination can influence the cryosurvival of bovine blastocysts following vitrification. Parameters of the length‐weight relationship (LWR) were estimated for seven fish species from Amazonian Equatorial coast of Maranhão, Brazil. Samplings were carried out in three sample points of the lower stretch of the Itapecuru River (2°57'6.2"S and 44°14'26.5"W; 3°0'33.0"S and 44°15'54.7"W; 3°3'42.9"S and 44°15'1"W). The specimens were caught quarterly from June 2012 to August 2014 using monofilament gillnets (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 mm between knots) from 10 m to 30 m long and 4 m to 6 m high. This study provides the LWR parameters for Schizodon dissimilis, Curimata macrops, Prochilodus lacustris, Geophagus surinamensis, Hassar affinis, Platydoras brachylecis and Hypostomus plecostomus.  相似文献

The 96‐h LC50 (median lethal concentration, LC50) tests were conducted using four different sizes of yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco to provide primary information on the sensitivity of this species to elevated ammonia and/or nitrite, and to determine if the sensitivity is mediated by size under the same conditions. The results showed that 96‐h LC50 of fish weighing 0.034 ± 0.002, 0.296 ± 0.049, 3.52 ± 0.95 and 32.96 ± 5.75 g to total ammonia nitrogen‐N was 24.96, 35.85, 47.44 and 68.79 mg L?1, respectively; un‐ionized ammonia nitrogen‐N was 0.34, 0.49, 0.65 and 0.94 mg L?1 in test conditions of pH 7.42 and 23°C; and that nitrite nitrogen‐N was 69.06, 97.23, 133.61 and 196.05 mg L?1 in test conditions of pH 7.58 and 23°C, respectively. The NOEL (No Observable Effect Level) of fish (body weight from 0.03 to 30 g) to ammonia and nitrite was 2.25–6.22 mg L?1 total ammonia nitrogen‐N, 0.03–0.10 mg L?1 un‐ionized ammonia nitrogen‐N in test conditions of pH 7.42 and 23°C, and 6.27–17.68 mg L?1 nitrite nitrogen‐N in test conditions of pH 7.58 and 23°C, respectively. These results indicate that the susceptibility of this fish to total ammonia or nitrite was reduced with increasing size, and that a dose‐dependent relationship might exist between them. The 96‐h LC50 and NOEL of different sizes of fish to total ammonia, un‐ionized ammonia and nitrite would be important to know for water quality standards in yellow catfish aquaculture.  相似文献

Clove oil can be used as an anaesthetic in the handling of marine and freshwater fish. Few studies report on its use for periods up to 48 h, for example, under long‐distance transport conditions. This study tested the effect of different clove oil concentrations for 1–48 h on recovery and survival of the cichlid Haplochromis obliquidens, an ornamental fish species endemic to Lake Victoria. Haplochromis obliquidens were anaesthetized for 1 h using 5–25 μl L?1 clove oil. There was no correlation between clove oil concentration and post‐anaesthesia recovery time (P = 0.15). On average, fish recovered within 9.5 ± 2 min, and no fish died within 24 h after recovery. Results from exposure of fish to 18–20 μl L?1 clove oil for up to 48 h suggested a narrow margin of safety as this concentration range induced mortality. At 18 μl L?1 recovery times ranged from 3 to 43 min between 24 and 36 h exposure, while fish exposed longer than 36 h recovered within 1–10 min, or within 1–2 min after 44–48 h. At the end of a 48‐h transport experiment total ammonia levels were higher in transport water containing anaesthetized fish than for non‐anaesthetized fish (1.65 ± 0.19 and 0.54 ± 0.08 mg L?1 NH + NH3, respectively). The combined use of clove oil and the selective ammonium ion exchanger zeolite was considered feasible as ammonia levels could be reduced by up to 82% compared to control bags without zeolite.  相似文献

We characterized habitat requirements of juvenile cowcod, Sebastes levis, using information from surveys conducted aboard the manned research submersible Delta. We conducted 303 dive surveys on rocky banks and outcrops in water depths between 28 and 365 m in southern and central California, covering 483 km (963,940 m2) of seafloor. We counted 549,263 fishes from at least 134 species; 216 individuals were juvenile cowcod, S. levis, of 45 cm or less in total length (TL). Juvenile cowcod occupied depths between 52 and 330 m and demonstrated ontogenetic shifts in their habitat associations. Small fish (5–20 cm TL) lived primarily among cobbles or cobbles and small boulders. As fish grew, they moved into high-relief rock habitats, including boulder fields and rock ridges. Small cowcods were found with pygmy, Sebastes wilsoni, and swordspine, Sebastes ensifer, rockfishes. Larger juveniles often associated with juvenile bocaccio, Sebastes paucispinis, juvenile widow rockfish, Sebastes entomelas, and squarespot rockfish, Sebastes hopkinsi. Our study resulted in a characterization of seafloor habitats on a small spatial scale that is relevant to juvenile cowcod nursery areas, which is important when considering effective management strategies for this overfished species.  相似文献

The seaweed Ulva lactuca L. was spray cultured by mariculture effluents in a mattress‐like layer, held in air on slanted boards by plastic netting. Air‐agitated seaweed suspension tanks were the reference. Growth rate, yield, and ammonia‐N removal rate were 11.8% · d?1, 171 g fresh weight (fwt) · m?2 · d?1, and 5 g N · m?2 · d?1, respectively, by the spray‐cultured U. lactuca, and 16.9% · d?1, 283 g fwt · m?2 · d?1, and 7 g N · m?2 · d?1, respectively, by the tank U. lactuca. Biomass protein content was similar in both treatments. Dissolved oxygen in the fishpond effluent water was raised by >3 mg · L?1 and pH by up to half a unit, upon passage through both culture systems. The data suggest that spray‐irrigation culture of U. lactuca in this simple green‐mattress‐like system supplies the seaweed all it needs to grow and biofilter at rates close to those in standard air‐agitated tank culture.  相似文献

Diversity and distribution of bats was determined in four vegetation types in and around Meru National Park, Kenya between September 2000 and February 2001. Bat‐habitat studies were based on plant species dominance, cover and farming activities. Bats were captured using standard mist nets (18 m long × 2 m high) erected on poles averaging 3 m. Vegetation was broadly grouped as Acacia or Combretum wooded grassland, or Acacia–Commiphora bushland and studied using the Braun‐Blanquet method. Analysis of floristic similarity showed five vegetation species assemblages in the three broad categories. Four hundred and ninety‐five bats representing eleven genera in seven families were recorded. These were Epomophorus labiatus, E. wahlbergi, Cardioderma cor, Lavia frons, Myotis welwitschii, Scotoecus hirundo, S. leucogaster, Pipistrellus kuhlii, Mops condylurus, Chaerephon bemmeleni, Mormopterus sp., Hipposideros caffer, H. commersoni, Nycteris arge and Rhinolophus landeri. This was the first record of N. arge, M. welwitschii, C. bemmeleni and a Mormopterus species in eastern Kenya. The Combretum community was most equitable (E = 0.51) with nine bat species records, while farming areas had only four. The low species richness and increased dominance of a few generalist species on farms may be indicative of different levels of disturbance.  相似文献

A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted between April and August 2001 to evaluate the effects of NaCl on Oreochromis niloticus growth and water quality in twelve 0.015 ha limed ponds. The design involved fertilizer and salt as factors with two treatments for each factor. Each salt‐fertilizer combination was replicated three times and fish were not offered external food during the 98 days culture. Growth of O. niloticus was significantly enhanced by salt at higher fertilizer level but not at the lower fertilization level. Although salt had no direct effect on fish growth, a significant salt‐fertilizer interaction was demonstrated. Water quality variables, with a few exceptions, were similar among the salted treatments. Total ammonia increased significantly with fertilization level, but the values were similar in salted and unsalted treatments at the same fertilizer level. Total nitrogen was higher in the salted than unsalted treatments while the organic matter content was lower in the salted treatments. The reasons for the better growth of O. niloticus, are discussed with respect to water quality variables. The present results suggest that fertilization rates of 20 kg N ha?1 may have negative effects on fish growth. However, presence of sodium chloride seems to reduce these negative effects.  相似文献

Two field experiments examined the distance over which an attractant odour of a volatile chemical could influence thrips capture in proximal traps that were without the odour. In each experiment a star‐shaped array of water traps consisted of a centre trap with or without an odour surrounded by odourless traps at 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 m in eight equally spaced radial arms 45° apart. Experiments ran for 47 h (centre trap: ethyl nicotinate) or 7 h (centre trap: ethyl isonicotinate). Each had four replicates. With ethyl nicotinate, more thrips were trapped in the centre‐baited traps than in the unbaited centre traps (63×, 7×, 98× and 200× for total thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman ♀, and Thrips obscuratus Crawford ♀and ♂, respectively) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). More total thrips and T. tabaci♀ were trapped in the centre traps baited with ethyl isonicotinate than in unbaited centre traps (21× for both). For ethyl nicotinate, numbers of T. obscuratus in unbaited traps downwind from the baited centre trap declined by 50% within 0.4 m (♀) and 2 m (♂) and by 95% within 3 m (both ♀ and ♂) based on model predictions. For ethyl isonicotinate, numbers of T. tabaci in unbaited traps downwind from the baited centre trap declined by 50% within 1.3 m and by 95% within 10 m based on model predictions. Wind direction was an important factor in the degree and direction of thrips capture with the highest thrips capture downwind from the centre trap with odour. There was no increase in numbers of T. tabaci in any traps without odour in the ethyl nicotinate‐centred array. Differences in trapping patterns between thrips species and odours indicated that there were thrips species–odour specific interactions. Experiments examining differences between traps with and without a thrips attractant odour need to be designed very carefully to ensure meaningful results especially in enclosed and/or low‐wind indoor situations.  相似文献

The imidazole ring unit in both 2‐(2′‐hydroxyphenyl)‐benzimidazole (ligand a) and a europium(III) complex exhibited specific luminescent responses in the presence of fluoride anions. UV‐visible and 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance spectra showed that the NH bond of the imidazole ring can form a hydrogen bond with added fluoride anions. The detection limits are 5 × 10?6 m for organic ligand and 1.0 × 10?6 m for the europium complex respectively. The response times are less than 3 s. Aim

To investigate physicochemical characteristics and especially genotypic diversity of the main culturable micro‐organisms involved in fermentation of sap from Borassus akeassii, a newly identified palm tree from West Africa.

Methods and Results

Physicochemical characterization was performed using conventional methods. Identification of micro‐organisms included phenotyping and sequencing of: 26S rRNA gene for yeasts, 16S rRNA and gyrB genes for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and acetic acid bacteria (AAB). Interspecies and intraspecies genotypic diversities of the micro‐organisms were screened respectively by amplification of the ITS1‐5.8S rDNA‐ITS2/16S‐23S rDNA ITS regions and repetitive sequence‐based PCR (rep‐PCR). The physicochemical characteristics of samples were: pH: 3·48–4·12, titratable acidity: 1·67–3·50 mg KOH g?1, acetic acid: 0·16–0·37%, alcohol content: 0·30–2·73%, sugars (degrees Brix): 2·70–8·50. Yeast included mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae and species of the genera Arthroascus, Issatchenkia, Candida, Trichosporon, Hanseniaspora, Kodamaea, Schizosaccharomyces, Trigonopsis and Galactomyces. Lactobacillus plantarum was the predominant LAB species. Three other species of Lactobacillus were also identified as well as isolates of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Fructobacillus durionis and Streptococcus mitis. Acetic acid bacteria included nine species of the genus Acetobacter with Acetobacter indonesiensis as predominant species. In addition, isolates of Gluconobacter oxydans and Gluconacetobacter saccharivorans were also identified. Intraspecies diversity was observed for some species of micro‐organisms including four genotypes for Acet. indonesiensis, three for Candida tropicalis and Lactobacillus fermentum and two each for S. cerevisiae, Trichosporon asahii, Candida pararugosa and Acetobacter tropicalis.

Conclusion

fermentation of palm sap from B. akeassii involved multi‐yeast‐LAB‐AAB cultures at genus, species and intraspecies level.

Significance and Impact of the Study

First study describing microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of palm wine from B. akeassii. Genotypic diversity of palm wine LAB and AAB not reported before is demonstrated and this constitutes valuable information for better understanding of the fermentation which can be used to improve the product quality and develop added value by‐products.  相似文献

Ninety‐nine swordspine snook Centropomus ensiferus (9.80 ± 0.3 g, mean ± SE) were studied in order to evaluate the influence of salinity on physiological properties under rearing conditions. Growth performance, survival rates, and ion concentrations (Na+, K+, Cl?) as well proximal composition were measured over 76 days. Fish were exposed to three experimental salinities (0, 10, 20 ‰ , three replicates per treatment) and maintained in plastic tanks with a recirculation system equipped with flow‐through aquaria pumps (533 L per tank). Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation; at the end of the experiment the weight of fish kept in 10 ‰ was higher than that of fish kept in 0 and 20 ‰ , however no significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed among the experimental salinities. Survival was significantly lower in 10 ‰ salinity than in fish kept in 20 and 0 ‰ salinities. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found in the Condition factor (K), specific growth rate (SGR), or in plasma Na+, K+, or Cl? concentrations among treatments. Salinities also did not affect body composition (P > 0.05), but were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than at the start of the experiment. However, towards the end of the experiment a large accumulation of visceral fat in fish farmed in the three salinities (VFI > 4%) was observed. Water quality was within the optimum range (T: 28.7 ± 0.1°C; O2: 5.6 ± 0.1 mg L?1; ammonia: 0.2 mg L?1) for the growth of swordspine snook. Data indicates that Censiferus is an ionoregulator fish and able to cultivate successfully in various osmotic conditions, and in turn, maintain high levels of survival in captivity.  相似文献

Effects of ammonia stress on food ingestion, growth, digestion and antioxidant capacity were investigated in juvenile yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson) with initial body weights of 20.24 ± 0.18 g. The fish were reared in triplicate in 15 experimental tanks at a rate of 30 fish per tank for 56 days. Water was maintained at a dissolved oxygen (DO) level of over 6.2 mg L?1, pH 7.2–7.6, and temperature of 29.0 ± 1.5°C under a natural 12L: 12D photoperiod. Survival, food ingestion (FI), specific growth rate (SGR), food conversion efficiency (FCE), apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), total antioxidant capacity (T‐AOC), levels of glutathione (GSH) and malonaldehyde (MDA), and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐PX) of the juveniles were determined in total ammonia nitrogen (NH3‐N+NH4‐N) levels of 0 (control group), 3.36, 6.72, 13.44 and 26.88 mg L?1. The results show that the survival, FI, SGR, FCE, and ADC decreased significantly with an increase in total ammonia nitrogen (p < .05), and a significantly negative correlation between SGR and total ammonia nitrogen levels (p < .05). T‐AOC, SOD, CAT, GSH‐PX and GSH in the blood, liver and gills were found to decline significantly with an increase in the total ammonia nitrogen level (p < .05), while the MDA in the blood, liver and gills was elevated significantly with the increase in total ammonia nitrogen (p < .05). The results indicate a threshold in the induction of the T‐AOC and activities of antioxidant enzymes in yellow catfish tissues with a total ammonia nitrogen increase. In the present study the total ammonia nitrogen threshold thus changed from 6.72 mg L?1 in the juvenile yellow catfish.  相似文献

In vivo magnetic resonance imaging of xylem vessel contents in woody lianas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Previous reports suggest that in some plant species the refilling of embolized xylem vessels can occur while negative pressure exists in the xylem. The aim of this experiment was to use non‐destructive nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study the dynamics of xylem cavitation and embolism repair in‐vivo. Serial 1H‐MRI was used to monitor the contents of xylem vessels in stems of two dicotyledonous (Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis, kiwifruit) and one monocotyledonous (Ripogonum scandens, supplejack) species of woody liana. The configuration of the horizontal wide bore magnet and probe allowed the imaging of woody stems up to 20 mm in diameter. Tests using excised stems confirmed that the image resolution of 78 µm and digital image subtraction could be used to detect the emptying and refilling of individual vessels. Imaging was conducted on both intact plants and excised shoots connected to a water supply. In the case of Ripogonum the excised shoots were long enough to allow the distal end of the shoot, including all leaves, to be exposed to ambient conditions outside the building while the proximal end was inside the MRI magnet. In total, six stems were monitored for 240 h while the shoots were subjected to treatments that included light and dark periods, water stress followed by re‐watering, and the covering of all leaves to prevent transpiration. The sudden emptying of water‐filled vessels occurred frequently while xylem water potential was low (below ?0.5 MPa for Actinidia, ?1.0 MPa for Ripogonum), and less frequently after xylem water potential approached zero at the end of water‐stress treatments. No refilling of empty vessels was observed at any time in any of the species examined. It is concluded that embolism repair under negative pressure does not occur in the species examined here. Embolism repair may be more likely in species with narrower xylem vessels, but further experiments are required with other species before it can be concluded that repair during transpiration is a widespread phenomenon.  相似文献
