Objectives: The goal of our study was to determine whether altered adenosinergic mechanisms contribute to the depressed ventilatory response observed in obese Zucker rats. Research Methods and Procedures: Eight lean and eight obese Zucker rats were studied at 7 to 8 weeks of age. Ventilation (E) during room air, during 5‐minute hypercapnic (7% CO2, balance O2), and during 30‐minute sustained hypoxic (10% O2) exposures were sequentially measured by the barometric method on three separate occasions after the randomized blinded administration of equal volumes of either saline (control), 8‐(p‐sulfophenyl)‐theophylline (8‐PST, 7 mg/kg, peripheral adenosine antagonist), or aminophylline (AMPH, 15 mg/kg, peripheral and central adenosine antagonist). Results: During room air and hypercapnic exposures, AMPH (but not 8‐PST) significantly (p < 0.05) increased E in both lean and obese rats. During acute (2 minute) hypoxic exposure, 8‐PST (but not AMPH) significantly depressed E in lean rats. In contrast, AMPH (but not 8‐PST) selectively increased E in obese rats. During sustained (10 to 30 minutes) hypoxic exposure, neither AMPH nor 8‐PST administration altered E in lean rats. In contrast, AMPH (but not 8‐PST) selectively increased E during the late response in obese rats. Discussion: Our findings indicate that obese rats possess altered adenosinergic modulation of ventilatory responses to acute and sustained hypoxia in two opposite ways. We conclude that the reduced hypoxic ventilatory response observed in obese Zucker rats is attributed to depressed adenosinergic peripheral excitatory mechanisms and to enhanced adenosinergic central depression mechanisms, both of which contribute to the blunted ventilatory response in obesity.  相似文献

The small diameter of the carotid artery is not compatible with the evaluation of clinically available endovascular devices in the carotid balloon-injury (BI) model. We developed an endovascular BI model in the rat descending aorta, whose size is compatible with available endovascular instruments. We also tested the hypothesis that neointima formation is enhanced in the aorta of obese Zucker rats (OZR) compared with lean Zucker rats (LZR). Left external carotid arteriotomies and BI of the thoracic and abdominal aorta were performed by using a balloon catheter. Aortograms and aortic pathology were examined at 2, 4, and 10 wk after BI. At 10 wk after BI, the abdominal aorta in OZR had narrowed 8.3% ± 1.1% relative to baseline compared with an expansion of 2.4% ± 2.2% in LZR. Simultaneously, the thoracic aorta had expanded 9.5% ± 4.3% in LZR compared with stenosis of 2.8% ± 1.6% in OZR. Calculation of the intimal:medial thickness ratio revealed significantly increased neointimal formation in the OZR descending aorta compared with that in LNR. In conclusion, this minimally invasive BI model involving the rat descending aorta is compatible with available endovascular instruments. Balloon injury (BI) to the arterial wall is well known to induce restenosis, with a typical decrease in lumen diameter as a result of intimal hyperplasia and vessel wall remodeling.4,5,6,15,17,18 Restenosis occurs more frequently in patients with additional cardiovascular risk factors including diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, and hypertension.4,8,23 Zucker rats frequently are used as animal models of obesity, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes.16,20,24The rat common carotid artery BI model is widely applied to study molecular mechanisms and the role of smooth muscle cells in arterial disease and healing.17 Data on injury in other arteries and models are not extensive.5 From a clinical perspective, the rat carotid artery is too small to test available endovascular devices. Other sites that have been used in rat models include the infrarenal aorta and the common iliac artery.4,5,11,13,15,25 The aortic model requires an open laparotomy, whereas the common iliac artery is another small-caliber vessel. Objective : To investigate, in young obese male Zucker rats, the effects of chronic food restriction and subsequent refeeding on: 1) parameters of nonadipose and adipose growth, 2) regional adipose depot cellularity [fat cell volume (FCV) and number], and 3) circulating leptin levels. Research Methods and Procedures : Obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/?) male Zucker rats were studied from age 5 to 19 weeks. After baseline food intake monitoring, 10 obese rats were subjected to 58 days of marked caloric restriction from ad libitum levels [obese‐restricted (OR)], followed by a return to ad libitum feeding for 22 days. Ten lean control rats and 10 obese control rats were fed ad libitum for the entire experiment. All rats were fed using a computer‐driven automated feeding system designed to mimic natural eating patterns. Results : After food restriction, OR rats weighed significantly less than did lean and obese rats and showed a significant diminution in body and adipose growth as compared with obese rats. Relative adiposity was not different between obese and OR rats and was significantly higher than that of lean rats. The limitation in growth of the adipose tissue mass in OR rats was due mostly to suppression of fat cell proliferation because the mean FCV in each of the four depots was not affected. Serum leptin levels of OR and obese rats were not different from each other but were significantly higher than those of lean rats. Discussion : Marked caloric restriction affects obese male Zucker rats in a manner different from that of nongenetic rodent models (i.e., Wistar rats). In comparison with the response to caloric deprivation of Wistar rats, these calorically restricted obese male Zucker rats appeared to defend their relative adiposity and mean FCV at the expense of fat cell number. These findings indicate that genetic and/or tissue‐specific controls override the general consequences of food restriction in this genetic model of obesity.  相似文献

Ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia is a time-dependent increase in ventilation and the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) that involves neural plasticity in both carotid body chemoreceptors and brainstem respiratory centers. The mechanisms of such plasticity are not completely understood but recent animal studies show it can be blocked by administering ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, during chronic hypoxia. We tested the hypothesis that ibuprofen would also block the increase in HVR with chronic hypoxia in humans in 15 healthy men and women using a double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over trial. The isocapnic HVR was measured with standard methods in subjects treated with ibuprofen (400mg every 8 hrs) or placebo for 48 hours at sea level and 48 hours at high altitude (3,800 m). Subjects returned to sea level for at least 30 days prior to repeating the protocol with the opposite treatment. Ibuprofen significantly decreased the HVR after acclimatization to high altitude compared to placebo but it did not affect ventilation or arterial O2 saturation breathing ambient air at high altitude. Hence, compensatory responses prevent hypoventilation with decreased isocapnic ventilatory O2-sensitivity from ibuprofen at this altitude. The effect of ibuprofen to decrease the HVR in humans provides the first experimental evidence that a signaling mechanism described for ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia in animal models also occurs in people. This establishes a foundation for the future experiments to test the potential role of different mechanisms for neural plasticity and ventilatory acclimatization in humans with chronic hypoxemia from lung disease.  相似文献

Thirteen-week-old female Zucker lean (Fa/Fa) and obese (fa/fa) rats were injected through a cannula inserted in the left jugular vein with 1 mL/kg of 3H-labeled oleoyl-estrone in liposomes (Merlin-2) (i.e., 670 fmol, 84 kBq). The rats were killed 10 minutes later and dissected. The presence of intact or hydrolyzed oleoyl-estrone was later determined in all samples. The pattern of distribution of estrone was quite different from that of oleoyl-estrone both in rats that were lean and in those that were obese. Estrone was better retained by white adipose tissue than oleoyl-estrone. Liver, spleen, and lungs accumulated more oleoyl-estrone and split part of it, from 4.7% (lung, obese) to 27% (liver, lean). The overall high retention of estrone by the rat tissues results in its very low circulating levels. The fast splitting of liposome-carried oleoyl-estrone by most tissues (up to more than 67% by intestine and skin of lean rats) may help explain the rise in blood free estrone. The differences between lean and obese Zucker rats are mainly quantitative in the case of estrone, the main differences being found in blood and adipose tissues. However, when we compare the data for oleoyl-estrone, the differences cannot be dismissed simply as due to differences in body size or the extent of fat deposits. A large portion of the label remained in the blood of the rats that were obese but not in those that were lean, the tissues of which took up more label. Brown adipose tissue shows a fair affinity for oleoyl-estrone in the rats that were lean but practically does not retain label in the rats that were obese, suggesting that oleoyl-estrone may have a direct effect on brown adipose tissue. The decreased uptake of oleoyl-estrone in rats that were obese shows that the mechanism regulating the turnover or disposal of this signal is altered in this type of genetic obesity.  相似文献

LY226936, methylcarbamothoic acid-S-(4,5-dihydro-2-thiazolyl) ester, is a new compound that, when administered to obese Zucker rats, caused reduced food intake. LY226936 reduced the food consumption after a single oral dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg. On chronic oral administration to meal-fed obese (5 to 35 mg/kg. once daily) and to fed obese and lean (15 mg/kg. twice daily) Zucker rats, LY226936 reduced food intake and body weight gain for periods ranging from 40 to 48 days. The effect on both parameters was statistically significant. There is no evidence in our studies that tolerance to the actions of LY226936 developed. LY226936 decreased the consumption of both high carbohydrate and high fat diets. Food consumption of meal-fed obese Zucker rats was reduced significantly each time a single dose of 10 ugm LY226936 per rat was infused intracerebroventricularly. None of the receptors studied (mu and kappa opioid, CCK, serotonin, neuropeptide Y, galinin, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid) appeared to bind LY226936 and therefore, appear not to be involved in the depression of food intake by the obese Zucker rat.  相似文献

BESSESEN, DANIEL H, CONNIE L RUPP AND ROBERT H ECKEL. Dietary fat is shunted away from oxidation, toward storage in obese zucker rats. Obes Res. 1995;3:179–189. Previous measurements of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in adipose tissue (ATLPL) of lean and obese Zucker rats have consistently documented increased activity in obese rats relative to lean. Since LPL is considered to be rate limiting for the delivery of triglyceride fatty acids (TGFA) to muscle and adipose tissue, these data have been used to suggest that the metabolic partitioning of TGFA favors storage over oxidation in obese rats. To document the partitioning of TGFA directly, the fate of 14C labeled oleic acid (42nmols) was fed to lean, obese, and obese Zucker rats fed a hypocaloric diet designed to chronically reduce weight 25% below that of obese controls (reduced-obese). The amount of 14C recovered in CO2 over 6 hours following ingestion was significantly less in obese rats compared to lean (0.45 ± 0.06 vs. 0.88 ± 0.09nmols, p=.0004) and less still in the reduced obese group (0.34 ± 0.06nmols p=.00003). Six hours after ingestion, the quantity of label found in adipose tissue was significantly greater in the obese rats compared to lean (14.51 ± 1.92 vs. 1.38 ± 0.29nmols p<.00001), but was intermediate in the reduced-obese group (9.23 ± 0.98nmols p=.0003). At 2.2 hours there was significantly more label in skeletal muscle of lean rats compared to either obese or reduced-obese (2.33 ± 0.24; 1.35 ± 0.04nmols p=.01; 1.41 ± 0.27nm p=.02). However, at 6 hours these differences between groups were no longer present. These findings Indicate that dietary fat is shunted away from oxidation toward storage in obese Zucker rats. Additionally it appears that there may be a relative block in the oxidation of TGFA that is taken up by skeletal muscle in obese rats. Finally the relative normalization of this partitioning defect in reduced-obese rats is at variance with what was suggested by previous measurements of tissue specific levels of LPL, and suggests an enhanced recirculation of fatty acids from adipose tissue to muscle in reduced-obese rats. This could occur through increased delivery of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) to muscle as a result of an increase in net lipolysis.  相似文献

Effects of intracerebro-ventricular infusion of leptin in obese Zucker rats. The obese Zucker rat (OZR) exhibits a missense mutation in the cDNA for the leptin receptor, producing a single amino acid substitution in the extracellular domain of the receptor. A mutation in the leptin receptor gene of the db/db mouse prevents the synthesis of the long splice variant of the receptor. The possibility that the OZR, like the db/db mouse, is refractory to the actions of murine leptin was tested by infusing the protein intracerebroventricularly via a minipump for 7 days. Lean Zucker rats (LZR) infused with leptin acted as positive controls, and other groups of OZR and LZR were infused with vehicle. In LZR, leptin reduced body-weight and food intake and increased brown adipose tissue (BAT) temperature. Plasma corticosterone increased (61%) in these rats, and plasma triglycerides fell (78%). Leptin treatment improved tolerance to an oral glucose load (16% reduction in the area under the blood glucose curve) while lowering plasma insulin. In OZR, the actions of leptin were blunted. Food intake was slightly, but not significantly, reduced. Although there was a reduction in the rate of increase in body mass, the effect of leptin was about half that seen in LZR. BAT temperature and glucose tolerance were unchanged. In contrast to the elevated plasma corticosterone seen in LZR, leptin reduced the level of this hormone (27%) in OZR. In OZR and LZR treated with leptin, the plasma leptin levels were increased 24-fold and 47-fold, respectively. The results suggest that leptin retains some efficacy in OZR, although these rats are less responsive than LZR.  相似文献

A study of the functioning of the respiratory system and sympathoadrenal system (SAS) after adaptation to intermittent hypoxia in humans of different ages is described. Considering our own findings and published data, the author discusses the possible mechanisms mediating modifications of the respiratory function and regulating the SAS activity during adaptation to hypoxia. A key role of the carotid glomuses in the modulation of the functional parameters of external respiration and SAS under conditions of hypoxic adaptation is emphasized.  相似文献

采用营养液水培,研究了根际低氧胁迫下外源亚精胺对2个抗低氧能力不同的黄瓜品种(‘中农八号’和‘绿霸春四号’)根系中多胺含量和呼吸代谢相关酶活性的影响.结果表明,单纯低氧处理下,黄瓜幼苗根系中腐胺、亚精胺和精胺含量显著提高,异柠檬酸脱氢酶(IDH)和琥珀酸脱氢酶(SDH)活性显著降低,乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)、乙醇脱氢酶(ADH)和丙酮酸脱羧酶(PDC)活性显著提高.同时,与抗低氧能力弱的‘中农八号’相比,抗低氧能力强的‘绿霸春四号’根系LDH活性增加幅度较低,ADH活性增加幅度较高,IDH和SDH活性降幅也较小;外源亚精胺能显著提高低氧胁迫下黄瓜幼苗根系中亚精胺和精胺含量,降低腐胺含量;根系中LDH、ADH和PDC活性降低,IDH和SDH活性升高,说明黄瓜幼苗根系中较高的亚精胺、精胺含量可能有利于提高根系有氧呼吸能力,缓解低氧胁迫对植株的伤害.  相似文献

The Wistar Diabetic Fatty rat (WDF fafa) is a con-genic strain of the Wistar Kyoto rat. Studies using blood glucose reveal that only fatty male (not female) WDF rats spontaneously develop hyperglycemia when fed a stock diet Blood glucose values have not provided consistent results for evaluation of glycemic status in fatty male WDF rats. Zucker fatty (fafa) rats, while sharing the fa gene and the development of hyperinsulinemia and hyperlipemia, do not spontaneously become hyperglycemic. In order to examine strain differences and the effects of age on long-term average glycemic status in WDF and Zucker rats, glycated hemoglobin (GHb) was analyzed. Glycated hemoglobin was measured in male lean and obese WDF and Zucker rats at 2,3,6, and 12 months of age. Nonfasted plasma glucose was measured in male lean and obese WDF rats at 2, 3, 6, and 12 months of age and in lean and obese Zucker rats at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Plasma insulin was measured in lean and obese WDF and Zucker rats at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Obese WDF rats had significantly elevated GHb compared to lean controls at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Glycated hemoglobin was substantially above the normal range (3.8-6.5%) at 3 months of age (14.1%). Glycated hemoglobin significantly declined in the obese WDF rats between 6 and 12 months of age. Nonfasted plasma glucose was significantly elevated in the obese WDF rats at 3 months (14.1 ± 2.1 mM/L) and 6 months of age (16.2 ± 2.3 mM/L) compared to lean controls. At 12 months of age there was no difference in plasma glucose between obese and lean WDF rats. Obese and lean Zucker rats had similar levels of GHb and plasma glucose at all ages. In conclusion, GHb provides more integrated data for classifying disease status of WDF rats and evaluation of potential long-term complications associated with hyperglycemia.  相似文献

We previously reported that serotonergic activity was reduced in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) of obese vs. lean male Zucker rats. To verify that this reduction was associated with genotype rather than gender, we measured monoamines and their major metabolites in hypothalamic nuclei of ll-week-old female lean (Fa/Fb) and obese (fa/fb) Zucker rats. In addition, since the thermic response to cold is reported to differ between lean and obese rats, some rats were also exposed to 9° or 22° C for 2h to determine if cold exposure altered hypothalamic monoaminergic activity. As in males, levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid [5-HIAA; major metabolite of serotonin (5-HT)] and the ratio of 5-HIANS-HT were lower in the VMN of obese vs. lean females (P = 0.008, 0.001, respectively). S-HIANS-HT was also reduced in the paraventricular (PVN) and suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the obese compared to the lean females. Cold exposure significantly stimulated brown fat mitochondria1 GDP binding in lean but not obese rats. Similarly, levels of norepinephrine, dopamine (DA), 5-HIAA, and 5-HT in the PVN, and 5-HIAA in the SCN increased in cold-exposed lean but not obese rats. In contrast, VMN and preoptic 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC; major metabolite of DA) increased in the cold-exposed obese but not lean animals. We conclude that: (1) the blunted peripheral response to cold in obese vs. lean Zucker rats is accompanied by altered hypothalamic monoaminergic activity, the physiological role of which needs further evaluation; and 2) depressed VMN serotonergic activity is associated with the obese genotype (fa/fa) rather than gender and as such may contribute to the reduced sympathetic and enhanced parasympathetic outflow from the VMN .  相似文献

大鼠在高原环境模拟舱内间断缺氧及注射CoCl2溶液以建立红细胞增多症模型,实验分4组:平原组、慢性缺氧组、高剂量TP+慢性缺氧组、低剂量TP+慢性缺氧组,研究茶多酚对慢性缺氧诱导的大鼠红细胞增多症及心肌缺氧损伤的影响.结果显示,茶多酚能够显著抑制缺氧大鼠的红细胞数、血红蛋白和红细胞压积的增加,降低骨髓增生程度,减小缺氧大鼠心室重量指数,增加缺氧大鼠Hermannnwillson指数,同时经茶多酚处萼的缺氧大鼠心肌损伤程度较单纯缺氧组轻.提示,茶多酚对大鼠红细胞增多症有一定的预防作用,同时茶多酚还能减轻慢性缺氧对大鼠的心肌损伤程度.  相似文献

Pathophysiological and pharmacological concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) induce anorexia in normal rats. Obesity in humans and rodents is associated with increased TNF-α messenger RNA and protein levels in various cell types. This suggests that obese individuals may have differential regulation of cytokine production and dissimilar responsiveness to cytokines. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the intracerebroventricular (ICV) microinfusion of TNF-α (50, 100, and 500 ng/rat), IL-1β (1.0, 4.0, and 8.0 ng), and TNF-α (100 ng) plus IL-1β (1.0 ng) on obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/Fa) Zucker rats. The results show that: TNF-α and IL-1β, and the concomitant administration of TNF-a and IL-ip decreased the short-term (4 hours), nighttime (12 hours), and total daily food intakes in obese and lean rats; IL-1β was more potent relative to TNF-α; obese rats showed greater responsiveness to IL-1β: 8.0 ng IL-1β, for example, decreased the 12-hour food intake by 52% in obese and 22% in lean rats. On the other hand, obese and lean rats did not exhibit a significantly different responsiveness to the anorexia induced by 50,100, or 500 ng TNF-α at the 4-hour period; and the concomitant ICV administration of TNF-α and IL-1β induced anorexia with additive (4-hour period) or synergistic (12-hour and 24-hour periods) effects in obese rats. The effect of TNF-α plus IL-1β in lean rats was greater than additive for the 12-hour and 24-hour periods. The difference in suppression of total daily food intake by TNF-α plus IL-1β in obese (-43%) versus lean (-23%) rats was significantly different (p<0.01). The results show that obese (fa/fa) and lean (Fa/Fa) Zucker rats have differential responsiveness to the ICV microinfusion of two different classes of cytokines.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle is insulin resistant in the obese Zucker rat. Endurance training reduces muscle insulin resistance, but the effects of a single acute exercise session on muscle insulin resistance in the obese Zucker rat are unknown. Therefore, insulin responsiveness of muscle glucose uptake was measured in 15-week-old obese rats either 1, 48, or 72 hours after two hours of intermittent exercise (3030 min; work:rest). Hindlimbs of sedentary lean (LS) and obese (OS) rats and exercised obese (OE) rats were perfused after a 10-hour fast under both basal (0 mU.ml?1) and maximal (20 mU.ml?1) insulin concentrations to measure net glucose uptake. Insulin responsiveness of net glucose uptake was significantly reduced in OS compared to LS (8.5 ± 1.6 vs 15.3 ± 2.0 μmol.g?1.h?1, respectively). Compared to OS, insulin responsiveness of net glucose uptake was significantly increased by 56% and 80% at 1 hour and 48 hours after acute exercise. However, 72 hours after acute exercise, the increased insulin responsiveness of net glucose uptake was no longer evident. These results indicate that improved responsiveness of muscle glucose uptake persists for at least 48 hours after two hours of acute intermittent exercise in 15-week-old obese Zucker rats. Plasma leptin concentration is directly related to the degree of obesity and is higher in women than in men of the same body mass index (BMI). We hypothesized that fasting plasma leptin concentrations and the response of leptin to weight loss would differ in older men and women of a similar fat mass. Plasma leptin concentrations (radioimmunoassay) and fat mass (DXA) were measured in 47 older, obese (BMI=30 ± 4 kg/m2) women and 23 older, obese (BMI=31 ± 3 kg/m2) men after a 2 to 4 week period of weight and dietary stabilization, and then in 22 of the women and 18 of the men after a 6-month weight loss intervention (250–350 kcal/d deficit). Leptin correlated with fat mass in men and women (r=0.75 and r=0.77, respectively; p values<0.0001), but women had 3-fold higher leptin levels for a given fat mass than men (p=0.01). In response to the 6-month hypocaloric diet, men and women lost a similar percentage of fat mass (?13% and ?16%, respectively), but the relative decline in circulating leptin was greater in women than men (-45% and ?21%, respectively; p<0.0001). In addition, when leptin was normalized for fat mass using the ratio method, the decrease in leptin per kilogram of fat mass was greater in women than men (-0.37 ± 0.34 vs. ?0.04 ± 0.06 ng/mL/kg; p<0.01). After weight loss, the change in leptin concentrations correlated positively with the change in fat mass in men (r=0.60; p<0.01), but not in women (r=0.31; p=0.17). Furthermore, the loss in fat mass correlated negatively with baseline leptin levels in women (r=-0.47; p<0.05), but not in men (r=0.03, p=NS). These results indicate that the decline in leptin concentration with weight loss correlates with the loss in fat mass in men; but, in women, other factors affect the decrease in leptin concentration. This suggests that the role of leptin in the regulation of obesity is gender-specific and may account for gender differences in response to hypocaloric treatment and maintenance of lost weight.  相似文献

Hypoxia and the antipredator behaviours of fishes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Hypoxia is a phenomenon occurring in marine coastal areas with increasing frequency. While hypoxia has been documented to affect fish activity and metabolism, recent evidence shows that hypoxia can also have a detrimental effect on various antipredator behaviours. Here, we review such evidence with a focus on the effect of hypoxia on fish escape responses, its modulation by aquatic surface respiration (ASR) and schooling behaviour. The main effect of hypoxia on escape behaviour was found in responsiveness and directionality. Locomotor performance in escapes was expected to be relatively independent of hypoxia, since escape responses are fuelled anaerobically. However, hypoxia decreased locomotor performance in some species (Mugilidae) although only in the absence of ASR in severe hypoxia. ASR allows fish to show higher escape performance than fish staying in the water column where hypoxia occurs. This situation provides a trade-off whereby fish may perform ASR in order to avoid the detrimental effects of hypoxia, although they would be subjected to higher exposure to aerial predation. As a result of this trade-off, fishes appear to minimize surfacing behaviour in the presence of aerial predators and to surface near shelters, where possible. For many fish species, schooling can be an effective antipredator behaviour. Severe hypoxia may lead to the disruption of the school unit. At moderate levels, hypoxia can increase school volume and can change the shuffling behaviour of individuals. By altering school structure and dynamics, hypoxia may affect the well functioning of schooling in terms of synchronization and execution of antipredator manoeuvres. School structure and volume appear to be the results of numerous trade-offs, where school shape may be dictated by the presence of predators, the need for energy saving via hydrodynamic advantages and oxygen level. The effects of hypoxia on aquatic organisms can be taxon specific. While hypoxia may not necessarily increase the vulnerability of fish subject to predation by other fish (since feeding in fish also decreases in hypoxia), predators from other taxa such as birds, jellyfish or aquatic mammals may take advantage of the detrimental effects of hypoxia on fish escape ability. Therefore, the effect of hypoxia on fish antipredator behaviours may have major consequences for the composition of aquatic communities.  相似文献
