Question: Can above‐ground biomass of naturally growing Alhagi sparsifolia shrubs be estimated non‐destructively? Location: Qira oasis (37° 01′N, 80° 48′E, 1365 ma.s.l.) at the southern fringe of the Taklamakan desert, Xinjiang, NW China. Methods: Two methods were compared to estimate above‐ground biomass (AGB) of Alhagi. At first shrub AGB was estimated by manual ground measurements (called ‘allometric approach’) of length, width and height of 50 individuals. Subsequently regression equations were established between calculated shrub canopy volume and shrub AGB (r2= 0.96). These equations were used to calculate AGB from manual ground measurements in 20 sample plots within the Alhagi field. Secondly, kite‐based colour aerial photography coupled with the use of a Geographic Information System (called ‘GIS approach’) was tested. First and second order polynomial regressions between AGB data of the 50 individual shrubs and their respective canopy area allowed to automatically calculate the AGB of all remaining shrubs covered by the photograph (r2= 0.92 to 0.96). The use of non‐linear AGB regression equations required an automatised separation of shrubs growing solitary or in clumps. Separation criteria were the size and shape of shrub canopies. Results: The allometric approach was more reliable but also more time‐consuming than the GIS‐based approach. The latter led to an overestimation of Alhagi dry matter in densely vegetated areas. However, this systematic error decreased with increasing size of the surveyed area. Future research in this field should focus on improvements of AGB estimates in areas of high shrub density.  相似文献

Objective: Obesity and hyperinsulinemia are associated with dyslipidemia in adults and older children, but little is known about these relationships in very young children. We examined the relation of fasting insulin to lipid levels and lipid particle size in young healthy children. Research Methods and Procedures: Analyses were performed on data from 491 healthy 2‐ and 3‐year old Hispanic children enrolled in a dietary study conducted in New York City, 1992–1995. Obesity measures included BMI, ponderal index, skinfold thickness, and waist circumference. Low‐density lipoprotein (LDL)‐ and high‐density lipoprotein (HDL)‐cholesterol particle size were measured by nuclear magnetic resonance. Results: Fasting insulin level was positively correlated with triglyceride levels (r = 0.24 for boys and r = 0.23 for girls; p < 0.001 for both) and inversely correlated with HDL‐cholesterol level in boys (r = ?0.20; p < 0.01). Higher fasting insulin level was also correlated with smaller mean HDL particle size in both boys (r = ?0.21; p < 0.001) and girls (r = ?0.14; p < 0.05) and smaller mean LDL particle size in boys (r = ?0.13; p < 0.05). The associations of fasting insulin level with triglyceride and HDL‐cholesterol levels and HDL and LDL particle size remained significant after multivariate regression adjustment for age, sex, and BMI or ponderal index. Discussion: Fasting insulin level is associated with relative dyslipidemia in healthy 2‐ and 3‐year‐old Hispanic children.  相似文献

Objective: Previous studies have suggested that obesity enhances the inflammatory response, producing macromolecules involved in the induction and/or maintenance of increased erythrocyte aggregation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the correlation between inflammation markers, erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation, and the degree of obesity and to assess phosphatidylserine expression on erythrocyte surface membrane of obese vs. nonobese individuals. Research Methods and Procedures: Erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation in the peripheral venous blood was evaluated by using a new biomarker, phosphatidylserine expression was assessed by means of flow cytometry, and markers of inflammation were measured in 65 subjects: 30 obese [body mass index (BMI) = 41 ± 7.7 kg/m2] and 35 nonobese (BMI = 24 ± 2.7 kg/m2) individuals. Pearson correlations and Student's t test were performed. Results: A highly significant difference was noted in the degree of erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation and markers of inflammation between the study groups. BMI correlated with erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation (r = 0.42, p = 0.001), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.42, p = 0.001), high‐sensitive C‐reactive protein (r = 0.55, p < 10?4), fibrinogen (r = 0.37, p = 0.004), and white blood cell count (r = 0.45, p < 10?4). The degree of erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation correlated with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.5, p < 10?4), high‐sensitive C‐reactive protein (r = 0.56, p < 10?4), fibrinogen (r = 0.54, p < 10?4), and white blood cell count (r = 0.32, p = 0.01). Discussion: Our results suggest that obesity‐related erythrocyte adhesiveness/aggregation is probably mediated through increased concentrations of adhesive macromolecules in the circulation and not necessarily through hyperlipidemia or phosphatidylserine exposure on erythrocyte's membrane.  相似文献

Objective: This study aimed to describe levels of physical activity in a representative sample of preschool children and to quantify tracking of activity over 1 year. Research Methods and Procedures: Physical activity (mean accelerometry counts/minute) was assessed over 3 days using the Computer Science and Applications accelerometer in 3‐ to 4‐year‐old children (n = 104; 52 boys; mean age, 3.7 ± 0.4 years). In 60 children (30 boys), measurements were repeated 1 year later. Results: Mean total activity at baseline was 777 ± 207 counts/minute in boys and 657 ± 172 counts/minute for girls; this gender difference was significant (p < 0.001). In the cross‐sectional analysis, total activity was significantly positively related to age (r = 0.37, p = 0.007). In the sample followed up for 1 year, mean total activity was 849 ± 252. The longitudinal analysis confirmed that total physical activity increased over the 1‐year period (paired Student's t test, p < 0.001). The tracking rank order correlation coefficient of total activity count over 1 year was r = 0.40 (p < 0.001). Discussion: This study suggests that total activity increases during the preschool period in Scottish children and that gender differences in total activity are present early in life. Tracking of total activity was only modest, but adequate assessment of tracking requires methodological research aimed at elucidating the biological meaning of accelerometer output.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, including pulmonary embolism (PE), has been reported; however, recent large‐scale, population‐based studies conducted in the United States did not confirm such seasonality. The aim of this large‐scale population study was to determine whether a temporal pattern in the occurrence of PE exists. The analysis considered all consecutive cases of PE in the database of all hospital admissions of the Emilia Romagna region in Italy at the Center for Health Statistics between January 1998 and December 2005. PE cases were first grouped according to season of occurrence, and the data were analyzed by the χ2 test for goodness of fit. Then, inferential chronobiologic (cosinor and partial Fourier) analysis was applied to monthly data, and the best‐fitting curve for the annual variation was derived. The total sample consisted of 19,245 patients (8,143 male, mean age 71.6±14.1 yrs; 11,102 female, mean age 76.1±13.7 yrs). Of these, 2,484 were <65 yrs, 5,443 were between 65 and 74, and 11,318 were ≥75 yrs. There were 4,486 (23.3%) fatal‐case outcomes. PE occurred least frequently in spring (n=4,442 or 23.1%) and most frequent in winter (n=5,236 or 27.2%, goodness of fit χ2=75.75, p<0.001). Similar results were obtained for subgroups formed by gender, age, fatal/non‐fatal outcome, presence/absence of major underlying co‐morbid conditions, and specific risk factors. Inferential chronobiological analysis identified a significant annual pattern in PE, with the peak between November and December for the total sample of cases (p<0.001), males (p<0.001), females (p=0.002), fatal and non‐fatal cases (p<0.001 for both), and subgroups formed by age (<65 yrs, p=0.012; 65–74 yrs, p<0.001; ≥75 yrs, p=0.012). This pattern was independent of the presence/absence of hypertension (p=0.003 and p<0.001, respectively), pulmonary disease (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively), stroke (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively), neoplasms (p=0.005 and p=0.001, respectively), heart failure (p=0.022 and p<0.001, respectively), and deep vein thrombosis (p=0.002 and p<0.001, respectively). However, only a non‐statistically significant trend was found for subgroups formed by cases of diabetes mellitus, infections, renal failure, and trauma.  相似文献

Objective: Obesity is associated with hyperinsulinemia and increased level of C‐reactive protein in older children and adults, but little is known about these relationships in very young children. Research Methods and Procedures: Analyses were performed on data from 491 healthy 2‐ to 3‐year‐old Hispanic children enrolled in a dietary study conducted in New York City, 1992 to 1995. Results: Body mass index (BMI), ponderal index, and sum of four skinfolds were highly correlated (r > 0.75) in both boys and girls. Fasting insulin and glucose levels were only modestly correlated (r = 0.37 for boys and r = 0.28 for girls; p < 0.001 for both), but essentially all of the variability in a calculated index of insulin resistance was attributable to variability in fasting insulin level. The correlations of BMI with fasting insulin level were r = 0.16 (p < 0.05) in boys and r = 0.14 (p < 0.05) in girls. In separate multivariate regression analyses adjusting for age and sex, BMI and ponderal index were associated with fasting plasma insulin level (p < 0.001 for both obesity measures). In multivariate regression analyses adjusting simultaneously for age, sex, and either BMI or ponderal index, fasting insulin level, but not these obesity measures, was associated with C‐reactive protein level. Discussion: Obesity is associated with higher fasting insulin level, and fasting insulin is associated with C‐reactive protein level, in healthy 2‐ to 3‐year‐old children.  相似文献

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop and compare two DXA‐based four‐compartment [body weight = body cell mass (BCM) + extracellular fluid (ECF) + extracellular solids (ECS) + fat] cellular level models. Research Methods and Procedures: Total body potassium (TBK) model: BCM from TBK by whole‐body counting—ECFTBK = LST ? [BCMTBK + 0.73 × osseous mineral (Mo)]. Bromide model: ECF from sodium bromide dilution—BCMBROMIDE = LST ? (ECFBROMIDE + 0.73 × Mo); Mo and LST measurements came from DXA. The two approaches were evaluated in 99 healthy men and 118 women. Results: BCM estimates were highly correlated (r = 0.97, p < 0.001), as were ECF estimates (r = 0.87, p < 0.001); a small statistically significant mean difference was present (mean ± SD; BCMTBK model, 30.4 ± 8.9 kg; BCMBROMIDE, 31.4 ± 9.3 kg; Δ = 1.0 ± 2.8 kg; p < 0.001; ECFTBK, 18.5 ± 4.2 kg; ECFBROMIDE, 17.5 ± 3.6 kg; Δ = 1.0 ± 2.8 kg; p < 0.001). A high correlation (r = 0.97, p < 0.001) and good agreement (38.9 ± 9.5 vs. 38.9 ± 9.5 kg; Δ = 0.0 ± 2.4 kg; p = 0.39) were present between TBW, derived as the sum of intracellular water from TBK and ECW from bromide, and measured TBW by 2H2O dilution. Discussion: Two developed four‐compartment cellular level DXA models, one of which is appropriate for use in most clinical and research settings, provide comparable results and are applicable for BCM and ECF estimation of subject groups with hydration disturbances.  相似文献

Abstract. There is growing evidence that plant and animal species are arranged in hierarchies of relative competitive performance. More work is needed to determine which plant traits best predict relative competitive performance. We therefore measured relative competitive performance of 63 terrestrial herbaceous plant species using Trichostema brachiatum as a reference species (that is, phytometer or target species). The neighbour species came from a wide array of terrestrial vegetation types (e.g. rock barrens, alvars, old fields), and represented a wide array of growth forms (e.g. small rosette species such as Saxifraga virginiensis and large clonal graminoids such as Agropyron repens). The experiment was repeated with two pot sizes: large (control) and small (stress treatment). Relative competitive performance in large pots (controls) was highly correlated with that in small pots (stress treatment) (r= 0.90, p < 0.001). The hierarchy of relative competitive performance in the large pots was also highly correlated with the hierarchy in the small (stressed) pots (rs= 0.91, p < 0.001). Principal components analysis and multiple linear regression showed that plant size (measured by total biomass, above‐ground biomass, below‐ground biomass, canopy area, height and leaf area index) and leaf shape (measured as length to width ratio, length, width) were the two characteristics that best predicted relative competitive performance (large pots, r2= 0.55; small pots, r2= 0.48).  相似文献

The main aim of this paper was to evaluate the use of OLI spectral data as a tool to assess the steppe vegetation in a conservation context. The field sampling was conducted for two specific areas of treatment (a) an exclosure area and (b) a free grazing area. After testing several vegetation indices (VIs), the optimal results were obtained for the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)‐based aboveground biomass model with r2 = 0.61 and r2 = 0.72 for total and perennial biomass, respectively. No difference between observed and predicted total and perennial biomass was found (p = 0.700 and p = 0.306, respectively). The comparison between the two treatments using the field sampling revealed a significant difference on total plant cover (p = 0.016) and total biomass (p = 0.005), with a plant cover of 50.6% and a biomass of 325.771 kg dry matter per hectare (kg DM ha?1) on average in grazed area and 66.9%, 1,407.869 kg DM ha?1 in exclosure. Finally, a concordance is noted between the results obtained by the NDVI‐based biomass model and the field sampling‐based biomass.  相似文献

Ecological monitoring of streams has often focused on assessing the biotic integrity of individual benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) communities through local measures of diversity, such as taxonomic or functional richness. However, as individual BMI communities are frequently linked by a variety of ecological processes at a regional scale, there is a need to assess biotic integrity of groups of communities at the scale of watersheds. Using 4,619 sampled communities of streambed BMIs, we investigate this question using co‐occurrence networks generated from groups of communities selected within California watersheds under different levels of stress due to upstream land use. Building on a number of arguments in theoretical ecology and network theory, we propose a framework for the assessment of the biotic integrity of watershed‐scale groupings of BMI communities using measures of their co‐occurrence network topology. We found significant correlations between stress, as described by a mean measure of upstream land use within a watershed, and topological measures of co‐occurrence networks such as network size (r = ?.81, p < 10–4), connectance (r = .31, p < 10–4), mean co‐occurrence strength (r = .25, p < 10–4), degree heterogeneity (r = ?.10, p < 10–4), and modularity (r = .11, p < 10–4). Using these five topological measures, we constructed a linear model of biotic integrity, here a composite of taxonomic and functional diversity known as the California Stream Condition Index, of groups of BMI communities within a watershed. This model can account for 66% of among‐watershed variation in the mean biotic integrity of communities. These observations imply a role for co‐occurrence networks in assessing the current status of biotic integrity for BMI communities, as well as their potential use in assessing other ecological communities.  相似文献

Leptin, the obesity gene protein product, is a hormone with multiple physiological functions in the human. However, there are few reports in the literature on its role in trace element metabolism in the normal population. Therefore, we investigated the association among serum leptin, zinc, copper, and zinc/copper ratio in 570 healthy men and women aged 15 yr and older. Serum leptin assay was done with a commercial enzymelinked immunosorbent assay kit; serum zinc and copper levels were measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Serum leptin was found to be positively associated with age (r=0.254, p<0.001), sex (r=0.406, p<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (r=0.553, p<0.001), and serum copper (r=0.419, p<0.001), but negatively associated with the zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.423, p<0.001). There was no significant association between serum leptin and zinc (r=−0.131, p>0.05). When the confounding effects of age, sex, and BMI were removed, serum leptin was still positively associated with serum copper (r=0.197, p=0.02) and the serum zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.182, p=0.03). These results suggest that copper and not zinc has an effect on serum leptin levels.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the association between the kinetics of very‐low‐density‐lipoprotein (VLDL)‐apolipoprotein B‐100 (apoB) and intraperitoneal, retroperitoneal, subcutaneous abdominal, and total adipose tissue masses (IPATM, RPATM, SAATM, and TATM, respectively) in overweight/obese men. Research Methods and Procedures: Hepatic secretion of VLDL was measured using an intravenous infusion of 1‐[13C]‐leucine in 51 men with a wide range of body mass index (25.1 to 42.2 kg/m2). Isotopic enrichment of VLDL‐apoB was measured using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry and a multicompartmental model used to estimate VLDL‐apoB metabolic parameters. IPATM, RPATM, and SAATM (kilograms) were quantified between T11 and S1 using magnetic resonance imaging; TATM (kilograms) was determined using bioelectrical impedance. Insulin resistance was estimated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) score. Results: In stepwise regression, IPATM was the best predictor of hepatic secretion of VLDL‐apoB (r = 0.390, p < 0.005) and TATM was the best predictor of VLDL‐apoB fractional catabolic rate (r = 0.282, p < 0.05). IPATM remained significantly associated with VLDL‐apoB secretion after adjusting for TATM or HOMA score (r = 0.360, p < 0.01 and r = 0.310, p < 0.05, respectively). This association was also independent of age, dietary intake, and body mass index. None of the fat compartments were significantly associated with the fractional catabolic rate of VLDL‐apoB after adjusting for HOMA score. Discussion: In overweight/obese men, the quantity of both IPATM and TATM determine the kinetics of VLDL‐apoB. The effect of IPATM on VLDL‐apoB secretion is independent of both total fat mass and the degree of insulin resistance.  相似文献

Objective: Low plasma concentrations of high‐density lipoprotein (HDL)‐cholesterol and apolipoprotein A‐I (apoA‐I) are independent predictors of coronary artery disease and are often associated with obesity and the metabolic syndrome. However, the underlying kinetic determinants of HDL metabolism are not well understood. Research Methods and Procedures: We pooled data from 13 stable isotope studies to investigate the kinetic determinants of apoA‐I concentrations in lean and overweight—obese individuals. We also examined the associations of HDL kinetics with age, sex, BMI, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment score, and concentrations of apoA‐I, triglycerides, HDL‐cholesterol and low‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol. Results: Compared with lean individuals, overweight—obese individuals had significantly higher HDL apoA‐I fractional catabolic rate (0.21 ± 0.01 vs. 0.33 ± 0.01 pools/d; p < 0.001) and production rate (PR; 11.3 ± 4.4 vs. 15.8 ± 2.77 mg/kg per day; p = 0.001). In the lean group, HDL apoA‐I PR was significantly associated with apoA‐I concentration (r = 0.455, p = 0.004), whereas in the overweight—obese group, both HDL apoA‐I fractional catabolic rate (r = ?0.396, p = 0.050) and HDL apoA‐I PR (r = 0.399, p = 0.048) were significantly associated with apoA‐I concentration. After adjustment for fasting insulin or Homeostasis Model Assessment score, HDL apoA‐I PR was an independent predictor of apoA‐I concentration. Discussion: In overweight—obese subjects, hypercatabolism of apoA‐I is paralleled by an increased production of apoA‐I, with HDL apoA‐I PR being the stronger determinant of apoA‐I concentration. This could have therapeutic implications for the management of dyslipidemia in individuals with low plasma HDL‐cholesterol.  相似文献

Climate change and overfishing may lead to ecosystem instability and may benefit nonexploited organisms such as jellyfish. In the Irish Sea, an increase in jellyfish abundance was evident (r2=0.29, P=0.03) in a 16‐year time‐series (1994–2009) collected during juvenile fish surveys. Jellyfish abundance correlated positively with sea surface temperature (SST) over the preceding 18 months (r=0.65, pACF<0.001) and copepod biomass in the previous year (r=0.56, pACF=0.03) and negatively with spring (February–May) precipitation (r=?0.57, pACF=0.02). Principal components regression indicated that climatic indices explained 68% of the interannual variability in jellyfish abundance (P=0.003), where the components were based on the North Atlantic Oscillation Index, SST and precipitation. The frequency of cnidarian material present in Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) samples has also increased since 1970, with a period of frequent outbreaks between 1982 and 1991. Before this period, the herring stock in the northern Irish Sea declined rapidly to a low level, potentially stimulating structural change in the ecosystem. In 1985, there was a step decrease in CPR copepod biomass and in 1989, a step increase in the phytoplankton colour index, suggesting a cascading regime shift during the 1980s. Subsequent overexploitation of gadids, coupled with warm temperatures and the poor recruitment of cod, led to the rapid decline in cod biomass from 1990. While the biomass of sprat has decreased in the last decade, the herring stock has recovered partially. Reductions in demersal fishing pressure since 2000, intended to stimulate cod recovery, appear to have facilitated further rises in haddock biomass. Since the 1980s regime shift, sea temperatures have increased, the fish community has altered and jellyfish abundance has risen such that jellyfish and haddock may now play an increasingly important role in the ecosystem.  相似文献

Objective: We investigated whether serum concentrations of adiponectin are determined by body fat distribution and compared the findings with leptin. Research Methods and Procedures: Serum concentrations of adiponectin and leptin were measured by radioimmunoassay (n = 394) and analyzed for correlation with sex, age, and body fat distribution, i.e., waist‐to‐hip ratio, waist and hip circumference, and subcutaneous adipose tissue area of the lower leg as assessed by magnetic resonance imaging. Results: After adjusting for sex and percentage of body fat, adiponectin was negatively (r = ?0.17, p < 0.001) and leptin was positively (r = 0.22, p < 0.001) correlated with waist‐to‐hip ratio. Leptin, but not adiponectin, correlated with both waist (r = 0.49, p < 0.001) and hip circumference (r = 0.46, p < 0.001). Furthermore, leptin, but not adiponectin, correlated with the proportion of subcutaneous fat of the lower leg cross‐sectional area (r = 0.37, p < 0.001). Discussion: These data suggest that both adipocytokines are associated with central body fat distribution, and serum adiponectin concentrations are determined predominantly by the visceral fat compartment.  相似文献

Objective: The metabolic syndrome is characterized by defective hepatic apolipoprotein B‐100 (apoB) metabolism. Hepato‐intestinal cholesterol metabolism may contribute to this abnormality. Research Methods and Procedures: We examined the association of cholesterol absorption and synthesis with the kinetics of apoB in 35 obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome. Plasma ratios of campesterol and lathosterol to cholesterol were used to estimate cholesterol absorption and synthesis, respectively. Very‐low‐density lipoprotein (VLDL), intermediate‐density lipoprotein (IDL), and low‐density lipoprotein apoB kinetics were studied using stable isotopy and mass spectrometry. Kinetic parameters were derived using multicompartmental modeling. Results: Compared with controls, the obese subjects had significantly lower plasma ratios of campesterol, but higher plasma ratios of lathosterol (p < 0.05 in both). This was associated with elevated VLDL‐apoB secretion rate (p < 0.05) and delayed fractional catabolism of IDL and low‐density lipoprotein‐apoB (p < 0.01). In the obese group, plasma ratios of campesterol correlated inversely with VLDL‐apoB secretion (r = ?0.359, p < 0.05), VLDL‐apoB (r = ?0.513, p < 0.01) and IDL‐apoB (r = ?0.511, p < 0.01) pool size, and plasma lathosterol ratio (r = ?0.366, p < 0.05). Subjects with low cholesterol absorption had significantly higher VLDL‐apoB secretion, VLDL‐apoB and IDL‐apoB pool size, and plasma lathosterol ratio (p < 0.05 in both) than those with high cholesterol absorption. Discussion: Subjects with the metabolic syndrome have oversecretion of VLDL‐apoB and decreased catabolism of apoB‐containing particles and low absorption and high synthesis rates of cholesterol. These changes in cholesterol homeostasis may contribute to the kinetic defects in apoB metabolism in the metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

South polar skuas, SPS, (Catharacta maccormicki) and brown skuas, BS, (C. antarctica lonnbergi) are regarded as opportunistic predators. When breeding in sympatry, BS feed mainly on penguin eggs and chicks, while SPS forage almost exclusively at sea. The objective of this study was to determine the diet composition of adult SPS and BS breeding in sympatry, in order to assess food resource partitioning between these species. The total number of food items consumed was 375 for BS and 682 for SPS in 1992–93, and 427 for BS and 579 for SPS in 1995–96. The pellets composition was significantly correlated between skua species for the same breeding season (r s = 0.67, p = 0.0062 and r s = 0.81, p < 0.001, for 1992–93 and 1995–96, respectively), and between breeding seasons for the same skua species (r s = 0.71, p = 0.001 and r s = 0.81, p < 0.001, for SPS and BS, respectively). Trophic niche breadth of BS was wider than that of SPS (B A(BS) = 0.28 and B A(SPS) = 0.24; Z = 7.67; p < 0.001). The trophic niche overlap between BS and SPS was over 65% in both breeding seasons. In agreement with other studies on the diet of these skua species in situations of sympatry, SPS consumed more fish and BS consumed more birds.  相似文献

Insulin resistance increases cardiovascular risk of obese patients. Triglyceride to high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL) ≥3.0 (in mg/dl) is a marker of insulin resistance in overweight persons. We aimed at assessing cardiovascular risk profile in 301 overweight elderly Neapolitan outpatients, according to TG/HDL ratio and metabolic syndrome (MS), diagnosed by National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. TG/HDL ratio was ≥3.0 in 97 patients (group A) and <3.0 in 204 (group B). Overall, 93–97% of group A patients and 38–51% of group B patients had MS, depending on the diagnostic criterion. Group A patients with MS had significantly higher waist‐to‐hip ratio, total and non‐HDL cholesterol than group B patients with MS. In group B, MS and non‐MS patients had similar waist‐to‐hip ratio, blood pressure, total and non‐HDL cholesterol. Ten year coronary risk, calculated by the Framingham equations (n = 243), was 10.3 ± 5% in group B, non‐MS patients; 13.1 ± 6% in group B, MS patients; 19.9 ± 8% in group A (F = 32.8; P < 0.001). At the multiple regression analysis, TG/HDL ratio was associated with coronary risk (r2 = 0.227) more closely than gender, blood pressure, waist‐to‐hip ratio, non HDL cholesterol, and MS considered as a whole. A separate regression analysis showed that the logarithmically transformed TG/HDL ratio, an index of the HDL cholesterol esterification rate, is also associated with coronary risk (r2 = 0.252). Thus, TG/HDL ratio could help to characterize high‐risk overweight patients deserving a special therapeutic effort. Cardiovascular risk profile of insulin‐sensitive patients, identified by lower values of this parameter, is only moderately affected by MS.  相似文献

A high capacity for long‐distance dispersal is a key to success for species confronted with environmental heterogeneity, habitat modification, fragmentation and loss. However, dispersal capacity is difficult to quantify and therefore poorly known in most taxa. Here, we report on a test for an association of variation in dispersal capacity with variable colouration of noctuid moths. First, using data from 12 experienced lepidopterologists, we showed that despite variation among experts in average assessments, different species are consistently classified as having non‐variable, variable or highly variable colour patterns when assessed by different experts. We then compared the incidence of non‐resident species with high inter‐individual variation in colour patterns recorded on the isolated island Utklippan (n = 47), with that in a species pool of potential long‐distance dispersers from the nearest mainland (n = 295). Species with high inter‐individual colour pattern variation were over‐represented on the island compared with species having non‐variable colouration. This finding constitutes rare evidence from the wild of long‐distance dispersal, measured on a spatial scale relevant for moths when tracking habitats in fragmented and changing landscapes or when keeping pace with environmental challenges associated with climate change. Finally, we showed that Swedish noctuid moths classified as agricultural pests (n = 28) had more variable colour patterns compared with non‐pests (n = 368). The majority of agricultural pests were also recorded on the isolated island, an outcome that is indicative of pest species having high dispersal capacity. Data on colour pattern variation may thus offer a simple and cost‐effective proxy to estimate dispersal capacity and can also help identify potential pest species. Our findings are potentially useful when modelling and predicting population and range dynamics of species in spatiotemporally heterogeneous environments, with direct implications for conservation biology and pest management.  相似文献

The present study addressed the effects of growth hormone‐transgenic and non‐transgenic common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) predation on the community and populations of four gastropod species cultured in artificial environments. After a 110‐day population‐based predation experiment (three replicate pools [16 m2] for each genotype with one fish [total length 45.0~51.4 cm] and 150 Bellamya aeruginosa (Reeve 1863) per pool), there were no significant effects of predation by either transgenic or non‐transgenic carp on the biomass, number, or size selectivity of the population. Following a 10‐day community‐based predation experiment (three replicate pools [16 m2] for each genotype with one fish [total length 45.0~50.5 cm] and 150 Alocinma longicornis (Benson 1842), 100 Parafossarulus sinensis (Neunayr 1883), 55 B. aeruginosa, and 33 Radix auricularia L. per pool), the consumption rate and the number of gastropods predated by transgenic carp were 2.60 times and 2.85 times higher, respectively, than those of non‐transgenic carp. Furthermore, the biomass of A. longicornis, P. sinensis and B. aeruginosa consumed by transgenic carp was significantly (p < .05) higher than that by non‐transgenic carp. There was a significant difference in the type selection of the four gastropods by the transgenic and non‐transgenic carp, but both predators preferred R. auricularia and avoided B. aeruginosa. Compared with the non‐transgenic carp, predation by transgenic carp resulted in a significant decrease in A. longicornis (p < .05) and an increase in B. aeruginosa (p < .05). These results indicate that the effects of predation by both transgenic and non‐transgenic carp on the B. aeruginosa population tend to be similar, but their effects on the community composed of the four gastropods were significant different. This information may be useful for assessing the environmental risk of transgenic carp.  相似文献
