玉米的叶脉在单子叶植物中有一定的代表性,叶脉由四级组成,粗细不同的一、二、三级叶脉均从叶基向叶尖方向延伸,属叶片的纵向叶脉,四级脉横向与一、二、三级叶脉连接,是横向的叶脉,各级叶脉有各自的形成方式,由于它们有规律的分布,从而构成了叶片的输导网络,各级叶脉的发生和发育与叫片的生长有直接的关系。  相似文献

A comparison between the effects of DIHB and TIBA on growth and gravireaction of 15 mm primary maize ( Zea mays L. cv. LG 11) roots is presented. Intact roots were pretreated in the dark for 1 h with buffered solutions (pH 5.0 or 6.0) containing DIHB (10, 50, 100 μ M ). The plantlets were then maintained either vertically or horizontally in the dark or the light, and growth and gravireaction were recorded using a macrophotographic technique. Pretreatment with DIHB slightly inhibited growth and delayed gravireaction. These effects were most marked with DIHB at 100 μ M and were enhanced when DIHB was applied at pH 5.0. Similar effects were observed in roots pretreated with TIBA, but at a lower concentration (1 μ M ). The similarities between DIHB and TIBA as regards both chemical structure and the inhibition of gravireaction and growth, lead us to suggest that a major mode of action of DIHB, like TIBA, is the inhibition of indol-3yl-acetic acid transport.  相似文献

Maize lateral roots exhibit determinate growth, whereby the meristem is genetically programmed to stop producing new cells. To explore whether lateral root determinacy is modified under water deficits, we studied two maize genotypes (B73 and FR697) with divergent responses of lateral root growth to mild water stress using an experimental system that provided near-stable water potential environments throughout lateral root development. First-order laterals of the primary root system of FR697 exhibited delayed determinacy when grown at a water potential of −0.28 MPa, resulting in longer and wider roots than in well-watered (WW) controls. In B73, in contrast, neither the length nor width of lateral roots was affected by water deficit. In water-stressed FR697, root elongation continued at or above the maximum rate in WW roots for 3 days longer, and was still 45% of maximum when WW roots approached their determinate length. Maintenance of root elongation was associated with sustained rates of cell production. In addition, kinematic analyses showed that reductions in tissue expansion rates with aging were delayed in the longitudinal, radial and tangential planes throughout the root growth zone. Thus, this study reveals large genotypic differences in the interaction of water stress with developmental determinacy of maize lateral roots.  相似文献

Cis -abscisic acid (ABA), when applied to maize ( Zea mays L. cv. LG 11) roots, decreases the rates of cell growth and cell division in the meristem. It also decreases the rate at which nuclei become labelled with [3H]-thymidine and enter mitosis. Removing the root cap accelerates the entry of nuclei into the DNA synthetic phase of the mitotic cycle and enhances the rate of cell proliferation in the quescent centre. ABA diminishes these effects, but does not suppress them. Thus, ABA cannot wholely substitute for the presence of a cap. One of the primary effects of applied ABA is to retard cell enlargement which may in turn affect the rate of cell division; natural endogenous ABA may act similarly. ABA might in this way assist in maintaining the quiescent centre in intact roots, but cannot be the sole agent involved.  相似文献

The kinetics of daily photosynthesis, transpiration and dark respiration of shoots of maize plants ( Zea mays L.) were studied in a growth chamber. After one or two days of reduced light intensity, the photosynthesis and the transpiration returned immediately to a level higher than expected. Respiration, which was reduced by at least 50%, returned slowly for over 2 days towards the initial level. These results suggest the existence of reserves of assimilation products which are used up while maintaining the growth of the aerial part in spite of the lack of assimilation. The prolonged reduction of the respiration shows that it is not strongly correlated to photosyntheis or to growth but rather to the amount of available reserves of assimilate.  相似文献

In previous papers we found that the frequency of B chromosomes in native races of maize varies considerably in different populations. Moreover, we found genotypes that control high and low transmission rates (TR) of B chromosomes in the Pisingallo race. In the present work crosses were made to determine whether the genes controlling B-TR are located on the normal chromosome set (As) or on the B chromosomes (Bs). We made female f.0B × male m.2B crosses between and within high (H) and low (L) B-TR groups. The Bs were transmitted on the male side in all cases. The mean B-TR from the progeny of f.0B (H) × m.2B (H) and f.0B (H) × m.2B (L) crosses was significantly higher than that from f.0B (L) × m.2B (L) and f.0B (L) × m.2B (H) crosses. The results show that the B-TR of the crosses corresponds to the H or L B-TR of the 0B female parents irrespective of the Bs of the male parent. This indicates that B-TR is genetically controlled by the 0B female parent and that these genes are located on the A chromosomes.  相似文献

Maize liquid endosperm extracts contain the enzymes necessary for all of the steps of the plant IAA biosynthetic pathway from tryptophan, and provide a means to assay the pathway in vitro. We have analyzed the reactions in the presence of a series of indole and indole-like analogues in order to evaluate the potential of these compounds to act as inhibitors of IAA biosynthesis. Such inhibitors will be useful to investigate the tryptophan to IAA pathway, to determine the precursors and intermediates involved, and to select for mutants in this process. A number of such compounds were tested using in vitro enzyme assays for both the tryptophan dependent IAA biosynthesis pathway and for tryptophan synthase activity. Some compounds showed strong inhibition of IAA biosynthesis while having only a slight effect on the reaction rate of tryptophan synthase . These results: (1) show that IAA biosynthesis can be selectively inhibited relative to tryptophan biosynthesis; (2) suggest potential ways to screen for IAA biosynthetic pathway mutations in plants; and (3) provide additional tools for studies of IAA biosynthesis in plants.  相似文献

The effects of a synthetic growth promoter, 4-ethoxy-l-( p -tolyl)-S-triazine-2,6 (1H, 3H)-dione [TA], on growth and gravireaction of Zea mays L. (cv. LG 11) roots were investigated. In horizontal, intact roots, pretreatment with TA at 4 × 10−4 M inhibited the gravireaction. If the pretreated roots were rinsed with a buffer solution before incubation, the TA effect was reduced, indicating that a continuous presence of TA was necessary for its maximal activity. On the other hand, the TA pretreatment (1×10−5, 1×10−4 and 4 × 10−4 M ) promoted the elongation of these roots. The TA effect was stronger for illuminated roots than for those kept in darkness. TA also decreased the lateral curvature of half-decapitated roots maintained vertically in light. This indicates that the action of TA could be associated with some growth inhibiting substances produced or released in cap cells.  相似文献

以玉米品种“粤单9117”为材料,研究了种子发育过程中萌发能力和耐脱水能力的获得。玉米种子的生理成熟期约为43DAP(授粉后天数)。胚萌发能力的获得是在14-21DAP、耐脱水能力的获得出现在25-28DAP。胚的耐脱水能力在28DAP后仍不断得到加强。耐脱水能力的获得与细胞膜的发育及受保护的程度密切相关。脱水有利于不同发育时期的胚和种子的萌发。  相似文献

 In this study, we examined morphological changes of isolated maize (Zea mays L.) sperm cells in the presence of Brewbaker and Kwack salts (BKS) or the individual components of BKS using light, transmission electron and scanning electron microscopy. Freshly isolated sperms are 7.5 μm in diameter. Treatment with BKS for 5 h resulted in large cells with a diameter up to 41 μm. Staining of sperm nuclei with 4′, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) revealed two or more nuclei in a single cell, suggesting that BKS induces cell fusion. Treatment with each BKS component showed that cell fusion occurs only in the presence of calcium nitrate. Use of several calcium salts showed the same results, suggesting that the calcium ion, alone, is responsible for the observed cell fusion. Further studies were conducted to examine the relationship between calcium distribution and sperm location in pollen tubes using chlorotetracycline and DAPI. Growing maize pollen tubes exhibited a high membrane calcium region within 20–50 μm from the tip. The Sperms are found no closer than 90 μm to the tip of the tube, suggesting that sperms are located in a low calcium region prior to being released to the degenerating synergid. Twenty-one native populations (1120 individuals) of maize from Northern Argentina were studied. These populations, which belong to 13 native races, were cultivated at different altitudes (80-3620 m). Nineteen of the populations analyzed showed B chromosome (Bs) numerical polymorphism. The frequency of individuals with Bs varied from 0 to 94%. The number of Bs per plant varied from 0 to 8 Bs, with the predominant doses being 0, 1, 2, and 3. Those populations with varying number of Bs showed a positive and statistically significant correlation of mean number of Bs with altitude. The DNA content, in plants without Bs (A-DNA)(2n = 20), of 17 populations of the 21 studied was determined. A 36% variation (5.0-6.8 pg) in A-DNA content was found. A significant negative correlation between A-DNA content and altitude of cultivation and between A-DNA content and mean number of Bs was found. This indicates that there is a close interrelationship between the DNA content of A chromosomes and doses of Bs. These results suggest that there is a maximum limit to the mass of nuclear DNA so that Bs are tolerated as long as this maximum limit is not exceeded.  相似文献

A synthetic auxin 2-(2-methyl-4-chloro)phenoxypropionic acid (MCPP), analogue of 2,4-D, alters maize ( Zea mays L. H-30) germination while inducing callus formation. The effect of this auxin on protein synthesis and phosphorylation of the embryonic tissues was explored. Total cytoplasmic proteins were analysed for 14C or 32P incorporation into trichloroacetic acid precipitable material. MCPP significantly stimulated protein synthesis as well as protein phosphorylation. The protein synthesis pattern was highly altered in the presence of MCPP as analysed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Analyses by Sephadex G-100 chromatography and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of phosphorylated proteins indicate that the effect of MCPP on protein phosphorylation was only quantitative.  相似文献

Entry of the divalent cations Ni2+, Co2+ and Zn2+ into cells of maize ( Zea mays L. cv. Dekalb XL 85) root tissue is accompanied by an acidification of the incubation medium, a decrease in both the pH of the cell sap and the level of malate in the cells, and by an inhibition of dark fixation of CO2. K+, on the contrary, induces only a very low acidification of the incubation medium, does not change either the pH of the cell sap or the malate level in the cells, and induces an increase in CO2 dark fixation. We addressed whether Zea seedling morphology relevant to performance, defence hormone profiles and tolerance of a phloem‐feeding, specialist herbivore were affected by two processes, plant domestication and modern breeding. Domestication effects were inferred through comparisons between Balsas teosintes (Zea mays parviglumis) and landrace maizes (Z. mays mays), and modern breeding effects through comparisons between landrace maizes and inbred maize lines. Specifically, we compared seedling forms (a composite measure of leaf length, average stem diameter, shoot wet weight, shoot dry weight, total root length, root wet weight, and root dry weight), shapes (forms scaled by seedling dry weight, a proxy for seedling size), and defence hormone profiles among Balsas teosinte and landrace and inbred line maizes, exposed or unexposed to feeding by Dalbulus maidis. Our results suggested that domestication as well as modern breeding strongly mediated both seedling form and shape. Form was more similar between landrace and inbred maize than between Balsas teosinte and landrace maize, suggesting that domestication affected seedling form more than modern breeding. In contrast, shape was more similar between Balsas teosinte and landrace maize than between landrace and inbred maizes, suggesting that modern breeding affected seedling shape more than domestication. Additionally, seedling shoot : root ratios appeared to have been mediated by domestication, but not by modern breeding. In broad terms, individual seedling structures relevant to seedling ecology in wild or managed environments, such as leaf and root lengths, and shoot and root masses, were enlarged with domestication and reduced with modern breeding. Herbivory did not affect seedling shape, but had a weak effect on form so that seedlings were slightly larger in the absence versus presence of D. maidis. Also, both domestication and modern breeding seem to have mediated seedling hormone profiles, with breeding more strongly mediating profiles than domestication. Jasmonic acid isoleucine (JA‐Ile) and salicylic acid (SA) were induced by herbivory in both teosinte and maize. The hormone profiles assays collectively suggested that domestication and modern breeding altered constitutive levels of SA, abscisic acid and JA‐related (JA‐Ile and oxo‐phytodienoic acid) hormone levels in seedlings, particularly by increasing the levels of SA and decreasing those of JA‐related hormones. Altogether, our results suggested that maize domestication and modern breeding significantly altered seedling form, shape, ecologically relevant morphological traits (e.g. leaf and root lengths, and shoot and root masses) and hormonal defences, but not tolerance of D. maidis herbivory.  相似文献

We selected genotypes of high and low B chromosome transmission rate (TR) in a native race of maize (Pisingallo) from northwest Argentina. We made 20 female OB male IB and 20 f.IB m.OB crosses. The former (GOm) showed a large variation of B TR, with a mean of TR ± SE = 0.52 ± 0.06, ranging from 0.17 to 0.98. In the latter (GOf) the mean was TR = 0.47 ± 0.02 ranging from 0.31 to 0.58. Plants showing the highest and the lowest TR were selected to constitute the progenitors of the G1 generations. We made 19 f.0B m.2B crosses, studying 24–30 plants per cross. The TR of the high (H) and low (L) lines in Glm (GlmH and GlmL) significantly differed (TRH = 0.65 ± 0.03, TRL = 0.40 ± 0.01), indicating that the H and L lines are different groups. The large variation in male TR suggests that preferential fertilization of gametes carrying B chromosomes does not always occur. We also selected plants showing high and low TR in the progenies of f.lB m.OB crosses (GOf), and made 24 f.1B m.0B crosses, studying 23–30 plants per cross. The TRs of the H and L lines in G1f (GlfH and GlfL) were significantly different (TRH = 0.48 ± 0.025, TRL = 0.40 ± 0.02). The TRs in G0f and G1fL were significantly different (TR = 0.47 ± 0.02 and 0.40 ± 0.02, respectively), while this was not the case between G0f and G1fH. Our results demonstrate the existence of genotypes controlling B TR in this native population of maize.  相似文献

The conventional view of root-cap mucilage as an expanded blob of mucilage is characteristic only of root tips in contact with free water. In soil, the mucilage is almost always a dry coating over the tip to which soil particles adhere. The kinetics of expansion of root-cap mucilage of Zea mays roots grown in field soil, in soil in pots, and axenically on agar, were determined when the mucilage was exposed to water. On the soil-grown roots the increase in mucilage volume was linear with time, sometimes reaching a constant volume during the 6 h of measurement, but sometimes not. This linear expansion is interpreted as limited by the rate at which the condensed mucilage in the periplasmic and intercellular spaces of the root cap passes to the exterior of the cap, expanding as fast as it arrives outside in the water. The height of the plateau is interpreted as a measure of the amount of mucilage initially present in the interior spaces. Because of the greater availability of water in the axenic roots grown on 1% agar, the mucilage was already outside the root cap, and it expanded more rapidly. It reached a final volume about 10-fold greater than that on the soil-grown roots. The volume increase was curvilinear with time. An analysis of these curves suggested that this swelling on axenic roots was a diffusion of mucilage outwards from the flanks of the root cap, and the diffusivity of the mucilage was estimated as 4 × 10?8 cm2 s?1. The molecular radius derived from this diffusivity was 34 nm, and the estimated molecular weight was 1.6 × 108 Da.  相似文献
