Biogenic silica record in the sediments of Little Round Lake,Ontario   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The biogenic silica (BSi) record has been determined in the sediments of Little Round Lake, Ontario in order to review its postglacial development and study the relationship between BSi and diatoms. BSi concentrations in the sediment stratigraphy were found to correspond for the most part to the trophic history of Little Round Lake. Calculation of accumulation rates for BSi improved the correspondence of the BSi profile to the trophic history. Thus, BSi is a valuable paleoindicator when concentration and flux profiles are considered concurrently. Regression analysis of BSi and diatoms revealed that the concentration of BSi in the sediments was not a simple function of diatom numbers or biovolume, but that factors such as a correction for the rate of dissolution and abundance of chrysophycean scales and cysts were also important.  相似文献

The postglacial sediments of Kortowskie Lake contain well preserved chrysophycean cysts. Forty-six morphotypes were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Ten new morphotypes of fossil chrysophycean cysts are described. Some of the most abundant taxa show clear trends associated with the increase in lake trophic status. The cyst flora is divided into four groups: eutrophic forms (Cysta globata, C. cortoviensis, C. vermicularis); oligotrophic forms (Cysta curvicollis); cool-water forms (Cysta carinifera, C. crassicollis, C. microspinosa, C. modica and Cysta stellata), and indifferent forms (all other morphotypes which did not show a clear tendency). The percentage abundance of chrysophycean cysts wa related to climate changes, showing a considerable increase during the Subboreal period. Two factors, lake fertility and water level changes affected the abundance of the fossil cyst flora in the sediments of Kortowskie Lake.  相似文献

Four thousand eight hundred years ago hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) populations were decimated throughout eastern North America. We have studied the effects of this loss from the terrestrial community on three Southern Ontario lakes: Little Round Lake, Sunfish Lake, and McKay Lake. This study includes the use of cladocerans, diatoms, chrysophytes, and bacterial pigments to assess the limnologic changes that occurred in these lakes. Each lake experienced a change in trophic status that coincided with the loss of hemlock from its catchment, but the change in the aquatic biota was different in each lake. The lakes' size may have been the most influential factor governing the response to this terrestrial disturbance.  相似文献

Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to explore the relationship between measured environmental variables and surficial diatom (Bacillariophyceae) assemblages in alkaline lakes from southeastern Ontario. Total nitrogen (TN), watershed area, alkalinity, and maximum depth each explain significant (P ≤ 0.05) directions of variance in the distribution of diatom taxa. TN was highly correlated to total phosphorus (TP) (r = 0.92), chlorophyll a (r = 0.86), and Secchi depth (r =0.77). When a series of CCAs were run with the first axis constrained to each of these variables in turn, the ratio of the eigenvalue of the first axis to that of the second axis (λ1/λ2) was highest for TN, indicating that TN best explained the distribution of the diatom assemblages in this set of lakes. Furthermore, results of Monte Carlo permutation tests indicated that these four variables did not act independently on the diatom assemblages. Therefore, TN was selected to represent these four closely related variables to infer lake trophic status. Weighted-averaging regression and calibration (with classical deshrinking) were used to develop transfer functions to infer TN from the relative abundances of 83 diatom taxa recovered from the surficial sediments of 51 lakes. There was a good correlation between diatom-inferred TN concentrations and measured TN concentrations (r2= 0.75, n = 51). The weighted-averaging regression and calibration model was used to infer lake trophic status (represented by TN) from diatom assemblages presented in the sediments from Little Round Lake, Ontario. These data were used in conjunction with historical land-use data in order to quantify the sequence and extent of nutrient enrichment related to human activity in the watershed area.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. We developed equations which describe relationships between the relative abundance of diatom assemblages in the surface sediments of twenty-seven Sierra Nevada lakes and the present pH and acid neutralizing capacity in these lakes.
2. These equations were employed to reconstruct pH and acid neutralizing capacity at twenty-four depth intervals in a 20 cm long sediment core from Emerald Lake, a dilute, high elevation lake, located in Sequoia National Park, California, U.S.A.
3. The diatom-inferred pH and acid neutralizing capacity values indicated that neither pH nor acid neutralizing capacity exhibited significant trends since about A.D. 1825. We conclude from our diatom analysis that Emerald Lake has not been affected by acidic deposition.  相似文献

  • 1 Stratigraphic analyses of inorganic geochemistry, pigments and fossil diatoms in a 0.7 m core of profundal sediments are used to reconstruct the limnological history of Harvey's Lake, Vermont, over the last 1000 years. The lake is moderately productive, deep (44 m) and clear, and the phytoplankton today is dominated by the blue-green alga, Oscillatoria rubescens. Sedimentary pigments unique to blue-green algae, oscillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll, provide a detailed history of changes in the O. rubescens population. Accurate sediment chronology is derived from 210Pb, 137Cs and 14C dating and from the stratigraphy of pollen and sawmill wastes.
  • 2 Primary production increased in Harvey's Lake in 1780 following European settlement and again after 1945, as shown by greater accumulation of sedimentary pigments and diatom frustules, and changes in fossil algal assemblages. Blue-green algae first appeared in abundance about 1945, indicating nutrient enrichment from dairy wastes and shoreline development. Increased deposition of elements associated with classic minerals also suggests greater soil erosion during both of these intervals.
  • 3 Two episodes of increased sedimentary anoxia (1820–1920 and 1945–present) are marked in the sedimentary record by enhanced pigment preservation, changes in authigenic Fe and Mn stratigraphy,’and the development of laminated sediments. The earlier episode of oxygens depletion is correlated with the discharge of sawmill wastes into the lake, and the later episode is associated with increased primary production.
  • 4 Based on these data a new model for Fe and Mn sediment stratigraphy is proposed for lakes that do not undergo complete hypolimnetic anoxia.
  • 5 Fine-scale resolution of recent diatom and oscillaxanthin stratigraphy provides historical evidence for a long-term negative interaction between diatom and blue-green algal populations in Harvey's Lake.

Attached material on submersed vegetation from 18 lakes was analyzed by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to identify constituent components. Lake trophic state ranged from oligo-to hyper-eutrophic. Minerals present on 11 submersed taxa included calcite, various salts (KCl and NaCl), silicon dioxide (both biogenic and sand) and hematite. Abundance of deposited material was not related to concentrations of precursor elements in the water column. Resuspended sediments and diatom frustules both contributed to the silica fraction of marl and should be compartmentalized.  相似文献

The distribution of diatom frustules in the surficial sediments of lakes and ombrotrophic peat pools in Atlantic Canada are examined especially in relation to pH and bog lake succession. Sedimentary diatom associations for peat pools, strongly acidic lakes, and weakly acidic lakes are characterized. These associations and the derived diatom-pH calibration functions will facilitate improved paleoecological interpretation of natural ontogenetic pathways and assessments of recent anthropogenic impacts.  相似文献

青藏高原东南部高寒山区广泛发育冰川湖泊,湖泊沉积过程同时受控于区域气候、流域水文、地质条件及湖泊形态特征。基于放射性210Pb/137Cs和14C定年法,对巴松错沉积物理(粒度、分选系数)和化学指标(TOC、TN、C/N)进行分析,发现18世纪末到19世纪末湖泊沉积过程显著变化,表现为迅速变缓趋势。通过分析区域树轮重建的气候序列(温度、降水及相对湿度)及冰川地貌调查资料,认为气候变化及流域冰川分布位置是影响该湖泊沉积过程的重要因素。小冰期末期冰川前缘靠近湖区,随后温度上升导致冰川融水激增、水动力加强,从而引起湖泊沉积粒度的粗化。随着冰川前缘不断后退,径流输送距离增长、沉积分选变好、粒度细化。此外,该地区活跃的地质活动也可能是湖泊沉积过程明显变化的重要诱因。湖泊沉积硅藻是研究气候环境变化的有力指标。过去200多年巴松错硅藻组合变化不明显(DCCA=0.47 SD),说明该地区气候环境变化未超过其生态阈值。通过与其他沉积指标进行对比分析发现,巴松错硅藻记录受到流域水文和湖泊沉积过程影响,主要表现为外源输入和/或湖岸浅水区来源的底栖属种在湖心沉积物中的相对丰度增加。1770-1901年总体上具有较低的Procruste残差,说明期间沉积硅藻和粒度具有较一致的波动过程,也说明了巴松错沉积硅藻记录对沉积过程的响应较为敏感。藏东南地区很多湖区均受到冰川和地质作用的强烈影响,因此在利用微体古生物手段对该地区湖泊进行气候变化研究时,建议考虑沉积过程的影响并进行多指标对比分析。  相似文献

Paleolimnological techniques were employed to document the limnological histories of the aurora trout lakes, located in the Sudbury region of Ontario. Two of these lakes are of special interest to fisheries managers, as they represent the only known native habitats of a rare strain of brook trout: the aurora trout. These lakes were limed as part of restoration efforts. Stratigraphic changes in diatom and chrysophyte assemblages from dated lake sediment cores indicate that all the lakes have been impacted by anthropogenic acidification, although the timing and the magnitude of acidification were different amongst the lakes. For example, Whirligig Lake was likely the most naturally acidic lake in the past, but it had further acidified since about 1960. This lake was limed in 1989 and then again in 1993. In Whitepine Lake, acidification started 1940; however, in the most recent sediments (1992), some recovery in lakewater acidity has occurred. In Little Whitepine Lake (a reference lake), acidification started earlier (1920) and the lakewater pH continued to decline until about 1990. This lake was limed in 1989. The chrysophyte paleoindicators suggest a recent recovery in this lake. The successful re-introduction of aurora trout in Whirligig and Whitepine lakes is undoubtedly related to the improved water quality through liming but, based on our paleolimnological indicators, the lakes' limnological characteristics (e.g. pH and metal concentrations) are still different from those present before atmospheric deposition of strong acids from the Sudbury smelters.  相似文献

Synopsis In this study, we used pumpkinseed,Lepomis gibbosus, populations in two east-central Ontario lakes to test for age and size-dependent effects on the probability and timing of reproduction of mature females. Pumpkinseed body size characteristics differed in the two lakes; Little Round Lake harbours a stunted population and Beloporine Lake does not. Age-class distribution of mature females was determined by a maturity assessment on fish collected just prior to spawning and at the mid-spawning period, combined with an early-season capture-mark-recapture survey. Spawning females were collected throughout the breeding season to assess age and size-related temporal trends, and to compare their age and size distribution with that of mature females at large. The proportion of age 2 females in Little Round Lake that actually spawned was considerably lower than the proportion of mature age 2 females at large. Furthermore, age 2 females that spawned in this lake did not do so until late in the breeding season. In contrast, the proportion of young/small females spawning in Beloporine Lake was comparable to the proportion of young/small mature females at large, and both small and large females spawned throughout the breeding season. Small mature females in Little Round Lake may have had no other option but to spawn late in the season because of their poor body condition. In Beloporine Lake, condition factor early in the breeding season in age 2–4 females was higher than that of Little Round Lake females, suggesting that limited energy reserves in the spring may have prevented young Little Round Lake females from early spawning. Our results show that the likelihood and timing of reproduction are both age and size-dependent in some populations. Small individuals that delay seasonal maturation and spawn late in the summer probably contribute little to the population due to the restricted growth and reduced overwinter survival of their progeny.To whom correspondence should be addressed  相似文献

Diatom assemblages in sediments from two subalpine lakes in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, show asynchronous changes that are related to both anthropogenic and natural inputs of dust. These lakes are downwind of sources of atmospheric inputs originating from mining, industrial, urban, agricultural and natural sources that are distributed within tens to hundreds of kilometers west and south of the Uinta Mountains. Sediment cores were retrieved from Marshall and Hidden lakes to determine the impacts of atmospheric pollution, especially metals. Paleolimnological techniques, including elemental analyses and 210Pb and 239+240Pu dating, indicate that both lakes began receiving eolian inputs from anthropogenic sources in the late 1800s with the greatest increases occurring after the early 1900s. Over the last century, sediments in Marshall Lake, which is closer to the Wasatch Front and receives more precipitation than Hidden Lake, received twice the concentrations of metals and phosphorus as Hidden Lake. Comparison of diatom and elemental data reveals coeval changes in geochemistry and diatom assemblages at Marshall Lake, but not at Hidden Lake; however, a major shift in diatom assemblages occurs at Hidden Lake in the seventeenth century. The change in diatoms at Marshall Lake is marked by the near disappearance of Cyclotella stelligera and C. pseudostelligera and an increase in benthic, metal-tolerant diatoms. This change is similar to changes in other lakes that have been attributed to metal pollution. The marked change in diatom assemblages at Hidden Lake indicates a shift in lake-water pH from somewhat acidic to circumneutral. We hypothesize that this change in pH is related to drought-induced changes in input of carbonate-rich desert dust.  相似文献

Lake Waiau, a shallow, heart-shaped water body, is located at 3969 m on the summit plateau of Mauna Kea, a now extinct volcano, on the island of Hawaii. Sediment core from the lake bottom contains remnants of diatom populations spanning a period of more than 5000 years. The presence of diatom frustules in conjunction with an analysis of the major chemical constituents of core and modern sediments provided a unique opportunity to assess changes with time in a highly isolated environment.  相似文献

1. Analysis of fossil diatoms and pigments was used to examine the effects of land-management practises on the trophic status of Williams Lake, a eutrophic lake in central British Columbia, Canada. Published weighted-average (WA) models were used to infer changes in total phosphorus concentration (TP) during the past 200 years. 2. Diatom-inferred TP (DI-TP) was compared to 20 years of direct chemical TP measurements to determine the accuracy of diatom-TP models in inferring mean summer TP in Williams Lake. Plant pigments were measured using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to quantify historical changes in gross algal community composition and abundance and to evaluate further diatom-TP inferences. 3. Palaeolimnological analyses showed that Williams Lake has been productive throughout the last 200 years. Diatoms characteristic of alkaline, eutrophic conditions were continuously present c. 1765–1990 AD. Carotenoids from filamentous cyanobacteria (myxoxanthophyll, aphanizophyll) were regularly present in Williams Lake sediments, although cryptophytes (alloxanthin), diatoms (diatoxanthin), chlorophytes (lutein-zeaxanthin, b-phorbins), and siliceous algae (diatoms, chrysophytes) or dinoflagellates (fucoxanthin) were also important components of past algal communities. Terrestrial disturbance (railway and road constructions, cattle ranching) increased lake production, but resulted in relatively little permanent environmental change. 4. Comparison of DI-TP with measured TP (1972–91) showed that inferences from simple WA models were similar to average summer TP (39.1 vs. 35.2 μg TP l–1). Inferences resulting from data manipulations that down-weighted eutrophic lakes (outlier elimination, bootstrapping) or diatom species (square-root transformation, tolerance-weighting) were weakly and negatively correlated with measured TP, introduced bias into inference models, or underestimated measured TP. These patterns suggest that, when using diatom-TP models developed from sparsely populated regions, accurate palaeoecological inferences for TP in eutrophic lakes should avoid data manipulations which down-weight the most productive sites and taxa. 5. Comparison of DI-TP and fossil-inferred algal abundance during the past 200 years suggested that changes in nutrient inputs accounted for relatively little variation in past algal abundance. Although past changes in total algal biomass (as β-carotene) and DI-TP were broadly similar, the two variables were not significantly correlated (α = 0.05). In contrast, changes in DI-TP were significantly correlated with mean concentrations of diatom-specific carotenoids (diatoxanthin), although the explanatory power was low (r2 = 0.16). These patterns suggest that the DI-TP model reflects more closely environmental conditions in Williams Lake during periods of diatom growth, and not necessarily those when total algal biomass is greatest.  相似文献

 Benthic algal mats from four lakes located on Inexpressible Island (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) were studied, analysing their structure and floristic composition. Thirty taxa of algae were identified: 11 Cyanophyta, 15 Bacillariophyta and 4 Chlorophyta. The lake mats contained from 15 (lake C) to 26 species (lake D). The number of diatom frustules in the mats varied from 771×103 (lake C) to 9428×103 frustules g-1 (lake B). In terms of floristic composition and macromorphology, these mats were observed to be very similar to moat mats described from Lake Gondwana (northern Victoria Land) and the Dry Valleys lakes of southern Victoria Land. Diatoms are a major group of phytoplankton that account for approximately 40% of the ocean carbon fixation and the vast majority of biogenic silica production through the construction of their cell walls (termed frustules). These frustules accumulate and are partially preserved in the ocean sediments. Diatom growth and nutrient utilization in high‐nitrate, low‐chlorophyll regions of the world’s oceans are mostly regulated by iron availability. Diatoms acclimate to iron limitation by decreasing cell size. The associated increase in surface area‐to‐volume ratio and decrease in diffusive boundary layer thickness may improve nutrient uptake kinetics. In parallel, cellular silicon (Si) contents are elevated in iron‐limited diatoms relative to nitrogen (N) and carbon (C). Variations in degree of silicification and nutritional requirements of iron‐limited diatoms have been hypothesized to account for higher cellular Si and/or lower cellular N and C, respectively. However, in some diatoms, frustule silicification does not significantly change when cells are iron‐limited. Instead, changes in the Si‐containing valve surface area relative to volume within these diatoms is hypothesized to be responsible for the variations in the cellular Si : N and Si : C ratios. In particular, some examined iron‐limited pennate diatoms have reduced widths relative to their lengths (i.e. lower length‐normalized widths, LNW) compared to iron‐replete cells. In the pennate diatom Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, the mean LNWs of valves preserved in sediments throughout the Southern Ocean (a well‐characterized iron‐limited region) is positively correlated with satellite‐derived, climatological net primary productivity in the overlying waters. Because of the specific morphological changes in pennate diatom frustules in response to iron availability, the valve morphometerics (e.g. LNWs) can potentially be used as a diagnostic tool for iron‐limited diatom growth and relative changes in the Si : N (and Si : C) ratios in extant diatom assemblages as well as those preserved in the sediments.  相似文献

The diatom flora and limnology of lakes in the Amery Oasis,East Antarctica   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The diatom flora of three lakes in the ice-free Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was studied. Two of the lakes are meltwater reservoirs, Terrasovoje Lake (31 m depth) and Radok Lake (362 m depth), while Beaver Lake (>435 m depth) is an epishelf lake. The lakes can be characterized as cold, ultra-oligotrophic and alkaline, displaying moderate (Radok and Terrasovoje lakes) to high (Beaver Lake) conductivities. There was no diatom phytoplankton present in any of the three lakes. While 34 benthic diatom taxa were identified from modern and Holocene sediments of Terrasovoje and Radok lakes, a 30-cm long sediment core recovered in Beaver Lake was barren. Five species (Luticola muticopsis, Muelleria peraustralis, Pinnularia cymatopleura, Psammothidium metakryophilum, P. stauroneioides) are endemic to the Antarctic region. All identified taxa are photographically documented and brief notes on their taxonomy, biogeography and ecology are provided. The most abundant diatom taxa are Amphora veneta, Craticula cf. molesta, Diadesmis spp, M. peraustralis and Stauroneis anceps.
