Methyltestosterone-treated immature male masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou parr were attracted to both the urine of ovulated females and the ether soluble basic substances extracted from the urine, but not to immature female urine. It is suggested that the male response to the sex attractant (releaser pheromone) in the urine is under the control of androgens.  相似文献

A releaser pheromone of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou was investigated using Y-maze behavioural experiments. During the reproductive season, urine of mature females contains a releaser pheromone which acts as a sex attractant for spermiating mature male parr. The releaser pheromone in mature female urine is one or more low molecular weight substances (less than 10 000) soluble in ether under basic conditions. The attractant was not present in either the coelomic fluid of ovulated females nor in neutral or acidic extracts of female urine which contain free steroids and F-type prostaglandins, respectively.  相似文献

Levels of sulphated 17α20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20 β -P; the oocyte maturation inducing steroid) in blood plasmas of sexually mature male and female rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , were very low in comparison to those of the free steroid. However, relatively large amounts were found in urine of both sexes.
Catheters were inserted into the urinary bladders of unovulated and ovulated females and of ripe-running males, and the fish then placed in spawning channels. Three-hourly urine samples were collected between 09.00 and 18.00 hours and then a 15-h sample between 18.00 and 09.00 hours the next morning. Measurements were made of 17,20 β -P-sulphale, testosterone glucuronide (T-G) and 17 β -oestradiol glucuronide (E2-G). In females, the highest rates of excretion of E2-G, T-G and 17,20 β -P-sulphate were found in unovulated, ovulating and ovulated females, respectively. The rates of excretion of 17,20 β -P-sulphate, T-G and E2-G in ovulated females were unaffected by the presence of a male. id males, however, there was a sharp increase in the rate of excretion of 17,20 β -P-suiphate and T-G in fish which were paired with an ovutated (nesting) female. A similar increase was found in males injected with male trout pituitary extract.  相似文献

The extent to which "nurture" as opposed to "nature" determines behavior and sociosexual preferences in mammalian species is controversial although most recent interest has focused on genetic determinants. We report here that if sheep and goats are cross-fostered at birth, but raised in mixed-species groups, their play and grooming behavior resembles that of their foster rather than genetic species. There are no sex differences in effects on these behaviors, and other species-specific behavior patterns such as aggression, browsing, climbing, and vocalizations are unaffected. In adulthood, cross-fostered males strongly prefer to socialize and mate with females of their foster mother's species, even if raised with a conspecific of their own species. Castration within 2 days of birth slightly reduces the level of this altered social preference but mating preference following short-term testosterone treatment is the same as for gonadally intact animals. Cross-fostered females also show significant preference for socializing with females and mating with males of their foster mother's species, although this effect is weaker than that in both gonadally intact and castrated males. When cross-fostered animals are placed in flocks containing members of only their genetic species for 3 years, male social and mating preferences for females of their mother's species remain virtually unaffected. Females change to display an exclusive mating preference for members of their genetic species in 1-2 years although they still retain some social interest in female members of their foster species. Thus, there are clear sex differences in the impact of the emotional bond between a mother and her offspring in these mammals. Effects on males are strongest and irreversibly maintained even after altering their social environment, whereas those on females are weaker and mating preferences are clearly adaptable in the face of altered social priorities. These sex differences are presumably caused by pre-, or early postnatal, organizational effects of sex hormones on the brain.  相似文献

The asexual all-female Japanese crucian carp, Carassius auratus langsdorfii (Teleostei: Cypriniformes), reproduces gynogenetically, relying on the sperm of males of the sexual "host," C. auratus subspp. Theoretically, frequency-dependent mating preference of males to conspecific females can lead to the coexistence of asexual and sexual fish, if all else is equal. Our specific questions are whether males prefer conspecific females over asexual females and whether individuals show dominance hierarchies that potentially cause frequency-dependent mating preference. In an individual choice experiment, a tank was partitioned into three compartments with the middle one for a single male and the two outer ones for a sexual and an asexual female. The males of C. auratus bürgeri demonstrated a significant preference for ovulated conspecific females over ovulated asexual females. In contrast, in a group mating experiment, a single experimental tank included two males, a sexual female, and an asexual female together, and males chased and mated with both asexual and sexual females equally. Male mate preference was weak in group mating, which is typical in natural populations. Males and females of crucian carp showed no apparent agonistic behavior to each other in the group mating experiment. This is different from other gynogenetic complexes with the dominance hierarchy of males showing strong frequency-dependent mating preference (e.g., Poeciliopsis). We conclude that male mate preference is unlikely to be a strong frequency-dependent force maintaining the coexistence of asexual–sexual complexes of Japanese crucian carp. It was demonstrated that mice treated with urine from pregnant or lactating females experienced longer periods of oestrus than did mice treated with water or urine from singly caged females. Application of urine by means of perforated capsules placed in the cage of the test mouse showed that the factor(s) responsible for the longer periods of oestrus was an airborne pheromone. The females experiencing longer oestrous periods ovulated (ova in oviducts), became pregnant and gave birth.  相似文献

Allelic variation in the major histocompatibility class (MHC) IIB gene of salmonids is analyzed for patterns indicative of natural selection acting at the molecular level. Sequence data for the second exon of this MHC gene were generated for 11 species in three salmonid genera: Oncorhynchus, Salmo, and Salvelinus. Phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences revealed: (1) monophyletic grouping of alleles from each genus, (2) transspecies evolution of alleles within Salmo and Salvelinus, and (3) differential patterns of transspecies evolution within the genus Oncorhynchus. Within Oncorhynchus, five of seven species had alleles that were species-specific or nearly so, while the remaining two, O. mykiss and O. clarkii, retained ancestral polymorphisms. The different patterns in Oncorhynchus and the other two genera could be due to historical demographic effects or functional differences in MHC molecules in the three genera, but the two hypotheses could not be distinguished with the current dataset. An analysis of recombination/gene conversion identified numerous recombinant alleles, which is consistent with what has been found in other vertebrate taxa. However, these gene conversion events could not account for the species-specific allelic lineages observed in five of the Oncorhynchus species. Analyses of the relative rates of nonsynonymous and synonymous substitutions revealed the signature of selection on the class IIB gene in all 11 of the salmonid species for both the ABS and the non-ABS codons. Codon-based analyses of selection identified seven codons that have experienced selection in the majority of the species. More than half of these sites were mammalian ABS codons, but several were not, suggesting subtle functional differences in the mammalian and teleost fish MHC molecules.  相似文献

The courtship songs of Drosophila are produced by the male's wing vibration and consist of a series of pulses, with an inter-pulse interval (IPI) of 34 ms for D. melanogaster and 48 ms for D. simulans. The IPI's are not constant in length during courtship, but oscillate sinusoidally with 55-s cycles in the former species and 35-s cycles in the latter. We have stimulated D. melanogaster females with artificially generated courtship songs, and have observed that they mate fastest when the song incorporates a 55-s oscillation superimposed on a 34-ms IPI. D. simulans females, on the other hand, mate fastest with a 48-ms IPI and a 35-s oscillation period. Consequently these newly-discovered song cycles produce significant mating enhancement in these species, with the females showing a preference for songs which carry both the species-specific IPI and the species-specific IPI rhythm.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate species-specific preferences in two closely related species of hamsters, Phodopus campbelli and Phodopus sungorus . Male hamsters that were raised with conspecifics spent more time investigating an anaesthetized conspecific male than a heterospecific male, and also spent more time investigating odours of conspecifics than those of heterospecifics (midventral gland, urine, and saccular secretion). Cross-fostered P. sungorus males reversed their normal preferences, spending more time investigating stimuli (anaesthetized males and all three odours) of the foster species. Cross-fostered P. campbelli males also investigated an anaesthetized male of the foster species more than a male of their own species, but did not show a preference for odours alone. Social experience during the 15 d immediately following weaning also influenced these preferences. If exposures during and after nesting were to heterospecifics the preference for heterospecifics was strengthened; if either period of experience was with a conspecific, this eliminated the preference for heterospecifics in P. sungorus but did not influence the lack of a preference in P. campbelli . Thus, early experience during both the nestling stage and the 15 d after weaning influenced responses to species-typical cues in both species, but it had a more pronounced effect in P. sungorus .  相似文献

Several studies have shown female preference for conspecific males with the attached artificial ornaments of more elaborate heterospecifics. However, preference for heterospecifics under natural conditions is relatively rare. We tested what factors affect behavioural mechanisms of species isolation using three species of estrildid finch (genus Uraeginthus) that occur in both sympatry and allopatry. These finches differ in degree of sexual dimorphism; male ornamentation; behavioural and morphological similarity; and phylogenetic distance. Paired mate-choice trials were used in which females were presented with a conspecific and heterospecific male to test which of the above between-species differences best predicted the degree of premating isolation. The three species differed in the degree of species-specific mate preference shown. Females from the brighter two species discriminated against dull males, independently of sympatry-allopatry, similarity and phylogenetic distance. Females from the dull species reacted to conspecific males and brighter heterospecific males equally strongly, independently of similarity and phylogenetic distance. In contrast to previous studies, an equal preference for heterospecific and conspecific males was found under natural conditions. It is suggested that differences between closely related species in male ornamentation affect the likelihood that premating isolation will occur due to the fact that sexual selection tends to drive preferences for exaggerated ornamentation.  相似文献

Speciation by sexual selection is commonly modeled as the divergent co-evolution of male signals and female preferences in geographically isolated populations. Upon secondary contact, females fail to recognize divergent males as suitable mates and exhibit a strong preference for their own type. The result is behavioral isolation and, if behavioral isolation is strong enough, there is an absence of gene flow between two species. Growing evidence of both mutual and male choice challenges the conventional role of females as primary regulators of species boundaries; however, to date, few studies have explicitly compared males and females for conspecific preference. The relative contribution of the two sexes to species boundaries therefore remains poorly understood. We examined the strength of preference for conspecifics in both males and females using two closely related species of darters. Males in these species exhibit substantial parental investment; therefore, we hypothesized that selection for male choosiness would result in male preference for conspecifics comparable to females’. Results show that females exhibited strong and significant preference for conspecific males; whereas, male preference for conspecific females was highly variable. Some males showed a strong preference for conspecifics while others preferred heterospecifics or showed no preference, resulting in a non-significant mean preference for conspecifics. Therefore, despite considerable parental investment by males in this system, our results suggest females play a larger role in regulating species boundaries.  相似文献

Female preferences for two male song characters (duration of syllables [DS], syllable repetition period [SRP]) have been studied in Isophya camptoxypha, an Eastern European duetting bush-cricket. Songs with modified DS or SRP were presented to virgin females and their response songs were recorded and counted. Female preference functions were unimodal for both characters. But while in the case of SRP the obtained female preference function reached its maximum at the mean value of that character, in the case of DS females preferred modified songs with a DS slightly higher than the natural range of that character. A comparison between the obtained preference functions and the DS and SRP values measured in sympatric Isophya species (with similar song structure) suggests that the two examined characters and female preferences for them may be effective components of the species-specific mate recognition system of I. camptoxypha. Moreover DS values may also convey information about the quality of the singing male.  相似文献

Mechanisms that maintain species isolation within sympatric congeners have attracted analysis in many kinds of organisms, but not in snakes. We studied two sibling species of amphibious sea snakes (Laticauda colubrina and L. frontalis) on the island of Efate, in the Pacific Ocean republic of Vanuatu. The two taxa are almost identical morphologically, except that L. colubrina grows much larger than L. frontalis. No natural hybrids have been reported, and geographic distributions of the two taxa suggest the possibility of sympatric speciation. Our fieldwork shows that the two taxa are often syntopic and overlap in breeding seasons. Behavioral studies in outdoor arenas show that the separation between these two taxa is maintained by species-specific cues that control male courtship. Males of both species courted conspecific females but not heterospecific females. The proximate mechanism driving this separation involves chemical cues. Adult females of both taxa possess distinctive lipids in the skin. Males directed courtship behavior (chin-pressing) to hexane-extracted samples of lipids from conspecific but not heterospecific females. Males of the dwarf species (L frontalis) were more selective courters than were those of the larger taxon (L. colubrina), perhaps because a preference for courting larger females means that L. colubrina males would be unlikely to court L. frontalis-sized (i.e., small) females even in the absence of pheromonal barriers.  相似文献

We examined the behavioral responses of peripubertal femalemice to puberty-accelerating urine from male mice and to puberty-delayingurine from females living in groups. Marked attraction was showntowards both chemical signals when they were tested individually.These attraction levels were of comparable size for both urinesources and were little influenced by the age of the subjectsand their hormonal or nutritional status. When both chemicalsignals were presented, grouped-female urine was preferred tomale urine by prepubertal, food-deprived postpubertal and ovanectorruzedfemales. Free-feeding, postpubertal and ovariectomizcd femalesreceiving estrogen replacement failed to show significant preferencesbut did spend more time investigating male chemical signalson average. The effect of prior housing condition (with motherand littermates or isolated) on the subjects' attraction toand preference for these accelerating and delaying chemicalsignals was not pronounced. The magnitude of attraction to maleurine was significantly larger in isolated females comparedto females remaining with their litters. However, the attractionto groupedfemale urine and the preference for it over male urinewere not significantly influenced by housing condition. Whendirect contact with male and grouped-female chemical signalswas prevented, significant attraction and preference were nolonger evident, suggesting that urinary components with lowvolatility may mediate ‘attraction’. These resultsare discussed in terms of the ecology and physiology of thepheromone cueing system of the mouse.  相似文献

To study the variation and consistency of song preferences in Drosophila virilis females, we played them species-specific song and songs with modified sound pulses and/or interpulse intervals on 3 consecutive days. Species-specific song was played again on the fourth day. All playbacks were done without the presence of males. About 62% of the females indicated their readiness to mate by spreading their wings in at least one of the trials. The proportion of the females responding to species-specific song was about twice that of the females responding to modified songs. The majority of females responded to only one song type, which suggests that the females varied in their preferences and that their preference windows were rather narrow. The females were consistent in their responsiveness to species-specific song played on 2 days. If the female responded to normal song during the first trial, the probability of her responding to the same song during the second trial increased by about 32%. The number of songs required by the females before responding in the two subsequent trials was also correlated within the females (repeatability 0.328). Repeatability of female preferences for male sexual traits is expected both in the viability and Fisherian models of sexual selection. We conducted a study of the urine-marking activity of female mice when simultaneously exposed to urine odors from 2 kinds of males. Females, deposited a greater number of urine spots when presented with urine of normal, rather than castrated, males. Two androgen-dependent compounds known to be present in normal male urine enhanced female urine-marking when mixed with castrated male urine. These results are consistent with previous results concerning odor preference of females. However, females showed no marking preference between normal male urine and preputialectomized male urine, in spite of their preference for the former in our previous odor-preference study. Further experiments with various combinations of male urine revealed that females showed no marking preference when 1 of the 2 presented urine samples was from preputialectomized males, regardless of the other presented stimulus. We concluded that female urine marking is not a simple reflection of sexual preference, but possibly a phenomenon of a complex motivational system.  相似文献

A Salvelinus -infecting variant of Loma salmonae , derived from naturally-infected Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha by serial passage through brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis , has been isolated and amplified. Loma salmonae SV ( Salvelinus -variant) has a high preference for species of Salvelinus (brook trout and Arctic charr S. alpinus ) and low virulence and preference for species of Oncorhynchus (rainbow trout O. mykiss , Chinook salmon, cohoSalmon O. kisutch ) or Salmo (Atlantic salmon Salmo salar ). Although this variant of L. salmonae was different from the original, the differences do not justify describing it as a new species, although definitive determination is pending.  相似文献

To determine the role of the maternal environment in the development of adult olfactory preferences, the young of two species of North American lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus and Lemmus trimucronatus) were reciprocally cross-fostered shortly after birth. In-fostered (reared by foster conspecific females) and non-fostered animals served as controls. When adult, subjects were tested for olfactory preferences in a free-choice Y-maze olfactometer. When compared to controls, cross-fostered animals showed increased preference for heterospecific odour. This effect was stronger for males than for females. These results suggest that adult species-specific odour preferences are learned during the neonatal period.  相似文献

A suite of 12 subspecies and species-specific single nucleotide polymorphism (species-specific SNP) markers was developed to distinguish rainbow trout (RT) Oncorhynchus mykiss from the four major subspecies of cutthroat trout: westslope cutthroat trout (WCT) Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi, Yellowstone cutthroat trout (YCT) Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri, coastal cutthroat trout (CCT) Oncorhynchus clarki clarki, Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi, and their hybrids. Vitellogenin (Vtg) was isolated from male greenback flounder (Rhombosolea tapirina), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) plasma, following induction by estradiol (E(2)) inoculation. The molecular weight of each native molecule, as determined by gel filtration, was 540, 383 and 557 kDa, respectively. With sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions, Atlantic salmon and greenback flounder Vtg appeared as three major bands (approximately 159, 117, 86 kDa and 155, 104, 79 kDa, respectively), whereas rainbow trout Vtg appeared as one major band (approximately 154 kDa). Several minor bands were also present in each Vtg isolate. Polyclonal antisera, produced against only the highest molecular weight band from each species following excision from reducing gels, were reactive with all major bands in Western blots. In competition ELISA, parallel binding slopes were demonstrated between purified Vtg and plasma from vitellogenic females of the same species, but there was no reaction with plasma from untreated males. These antisera were highly species-specific and little cross-reactivity was noted, even between the two salmonid species. These data suggest that excision of bands from gels is a simple procedure for the preparation of species-specific antisera, and confirm that cross-species assays give highly variable results.  相似文献
