The lesser kestrel Falco naumanni is a globally threatened species, whose breeding populations seem to have declined due to recent agricultural changes. However, nothing is known about habitat requirements during winter, despite the fact that several populations are overwintering in areas affected by agricultural transformations. We studied population size and habitat selection by wintering lesser kestrels in a Spanish pseudosteppe (Los Monegros), where traditional fallow systems for cereals are rapidly being replaced by intensive and/or irrigated crops. About 15% of the adult population wintered in the study area, as determined by systematic roadside counts compared with accurate censuses made during the breeding season. Wintering lesser kestrels preferred to forage on field margins and stubble, while avoiding abandoned fields, ploughs, scrubland, growing cereals and, mainly, the expanding irrigated crops. This work confirms the need to incorporate the habitat requirements of threatened species over their complete annual cycles; while breeding lesser kestrels scarcely use fallow (ploughed at that time), during the winter, fallow (stubble at that time) is their main foraging habitat. Both fallow land and the present agricultural calendar should be maintained to assure the conservation of wintering lesser kestrel populations.  相似文献

Changes in population levels of Meloidogyne hapla, M. incognita, Pratylenchus coffeae, and P. penetrans were studied in 12 strawberry fields in the Dahu region of Taiwan. Ten potential rotation crops and two cultural practices were evaluated for their effect on nematode populations and influence on strawberry yield. Rotation with rice or taro and the cultural practice of flooding and bare fallowing for four months were found to reduce nematode soil populations to two or fewer nematodes per 100 ml soil. Average strawberry yields increased between 2.4% to 6.3% following taro compared to the bare fallow treatment. Corn suppressed M. incognita and M. hapla populations and resulted in an increased in strawberry yield compared to bare fallow. Other phytopathogens also present in these fields limited taro as the rotation choice for nematode management. Results of this research and economic analysis of the input requirements for various rotation crops, corn and bare fallow were recommended as the most appropriate rotation strategies for nematode management in strawberry in this region.  相似文献

The proportion of sugar-beet roots infected by Helicobasidium purpureum increased most rapidly in September and October. Violet root rot was not controlled by fungicides applied at drilling or in July. Heavily infected roots yielded 31% less sugar than healthy or lightly infected roots. Sugar beet following infected carrots lifted or ploughed in during July had no more violet root rot than when following barley or fallow, but the beet crop became heavily infected when it followed carrots left in the ground until December, whether they were then lifted or ploughed in. Eight varieties of sno-ar beet did nnt differ in siiscenrihilitv to violet root rot.  相似文献

Flooded rice fields, which occupy half of the total agricultural land in Japan, are known to be foraging habitats for waterbirds. We investigated the use of various fallow fields by birds in midsummer, when rice fields are generally full of grown rice plants and are of little use for foraging waterbirds. We distinguished four types of fallow fields based on the ground cover and vegetation: (i) tall-grass fields; (ii) wet short-grass fields; (iii) dry fields; and (iv) flooded open fields. In August 1998 we counted birds four times in 19 survey plots of fallow fields and in seven plots of rice fields in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, where 82% of the farmlands are devoted to rice production. We observed 590 individual birds of 22 species, of which 15 species were waterbirds, mostly herons and shorebirds. Flooded open fields supported the largest number of species and the highest bird density, while rice fields supported the fewest. Within flooded open fields, herons preferred open-water areas, while shorebirds used bare ground most often. Wet short-grass fields looked similar to flooded open fields, except for the amount of short grass, but supported far fewer birds than flooded open fields. The number of birds in dry fields was comparable to that in flooded open fields, but most of the birds were ground-foraging passerines. Our limited dataset suggests that fallow fields can serve as valuable supplemental habitats for waterbirds during summer, if they are appropriately managed to preserve flooded open fields and smaller areas of other habitats.  相似文献

The decline of the European hare Lepus europaeus populations has been shown to be correlated with agricultural intensification, which has caused loss of habitat heterogeneity. We aimed to investigate the diurnal spring habitat selection using Jacobs’ second selection index in an intensively cultivated farmland to reveal how the habitat choice by resting hares was affected by changes in the habitat availability. Clearance counts of hares driven out of known areas were made during an 11-year field investigation within two sectors of a private hunting ground located in the Paris basin (France). The loss of habitat heterogeneity included the disappearance of pastures dedicated to a last remaining sheep farm in the area, the removal of non-cropped areas and field boundaries and the increase of mean field size. Breeding stocks of hare declined during the study. Harrowed fields were always avoided. Pastures, alfalfa fields, thickets and fallow land were selected at the start of our study, whereas the remaining part was avoided at the end. The preference for ploughed fields decreased with the growth of vegetation in the winter-wheat fields. To benefit hares, land management should provide year-round vegetative cover and food from non-cropped areas in intensive arable farms.  相似文献

A 2‐year capture–mark–recapture study was conducted to estimate home ranges and weekly travel distance of Mastomys natalensis (Smith 1834) in an irrigated rice ecosystem and fallow fields. We found that adults have larger home ranges than subadults in fallow fields but not in rice fields, indicating that fallow fields are more suitable for breeding. Travel distances were larger in rice fields, especially in the transplanting stage, during which rice fields are flooded and provide less food, causing movements into neighbouring fallow fields that then temporarily experience higher population density. A decrease in travel distance was observed in rice fields during the maturity stage, which can be explained by higher food availability and a more suitable, nonflooded situation. Movement of M. natalensis in rice‐fallow mosaic landscapes thus seems to be driven by food availability and flooding status of the rice fields, which can be attributed to land use practices.  相似文献

The spatial variability of total soil nematodes and trophic groups in bare and fallow plots in Shenyang Experi-mental Station of Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was examined using geostatistics combined with classic statistics. Results showed that the soil pH value had a negative effect on plant-parasites in both bare and fallow plots; the mean number of total nematodes was significantly higher in fallow plots than in bare plots, which was 1485.3 and 464.0 individuals per 100 g dry soil in fallow and bare plots, respectively; the nugget (C0)/sill (C0+C) ratio of total nematodes, plant-parasites and bacterivores were lower in fallow plots (27.3%-45.6%) than in bare plots (49.5%-100%); the spatial distribution of total nematodes and trophic groups was found to be different between fallow and bare plots, which indicated that vegetation coverage had an effect on soil nematodes.  相似文献

Integrated pest management (IPM) has the goal of combining several control methods that reduce populations of pest insects and their damage to tolerable levels and thereby reduce the use of costly pesticides that may harm the environment. Insect populations can be monitored during the season to determine when the densities exceed an economic threshold that requires treatment, often as an insecticide application. We developed a simulation model where insect populations varied in exponential growth in fields and dispersed to adjacent fields each day of a season. The first model monitored populations of individual fields in a grid of fields and treated any field with insecticide if it exceeded a threshold population (asynchronous model) as done in traditional IPM. The second model treated the entire grid of fields with insecticide when the average population of all fields exceeded the threshold (synchronous model). We found that the synchronous model at all growth and dispersal rates tested had average field populations during a season that were significantly lower and required fewer treatments than the asynchronous method. Parameters such as percentage of fallow fields, number of fields, and treatment threshold had little affect on relative differences between the two models. The simulations indicate that cooperation among growers in areawide monitoring of fields to obtain an average population estimate for use in treatment thresholds would result in significantly less insect damage and fewer insecticide treatments. The synchronous method is more efficient because population refugia are precluded from which dispersal could reintroduce insects.  相似文献

以中国科学院沈阳生态实验站的裸地和撂荒地为研究对象,采用经典统计学与地统计学相结合的方法,研究裸地和撂荒地土壤线虫总数及各营养类群的空间分布特征.结果表明,裸地和撂荒地植物寄生线虫与土壤pH呈显著负相关;撂荒地土壤线虫总数的平均值显著大于裸地,分别为每百克干土1 485.3和464.0条;撂荒地土壤线虫总数、植物寄生线虫和食细菌线虫的块金值/基台值(27.3%~45.6%)低于裸地(49.5%~100%),裸地和撂荒地土壤线虫总数及各营养类群的空间分布格局均有明显差异,表明植被覆盖对土壤线虫的空间分布有较大影响.  相似文献

Abstract:  At 15 commercial highbush blueberry farms, fields where row middles were tilled had 72% lower larval density of Popillia japonica than fields with grass in row middles. Popillia japonica larval populations were similar in the perimeters of tilled and untilled fields. Soil parameters measured in these sites were not correlated with larval density of P. japonica. Samples of adult beetles on bushes showed that they were significantly less abundant in tilled fields compared with fields with grass in the row middles. The abundance of larvae inside fields during the spring was significantly correlated with early, but not late summer abundance of adult beetles on bushes. Comparisons of different tillage timings showed that grassy plots between rows of blueberry bushes that were tilled in spring and kept bare all year round had lower abundance of P. japonica larvae than those that retained perennial ryegrass. The effect of tillage timing on larval abundance was not consistent across 2 years, but most timings caused similar reduction in P. japonica larval density in the row middles. Tillage in the spring and in the autumn caused 50.5% and 68.8% reduction of larval density in each year respectively. These results indicate that tillage can reduce P. japonica larval and adult abundance in highbush blueberry fields.  相似文献

Field experiments were done to evaluate the extent to which cover crops can be used to help farmers comply with current legislation on nitrate leaching from arable land in nitrate vulnerable zones. Nitrate leaching was measured in sandy loam and chalky loam soils under a range of early sown (mid-August) cover crops at two sites in SE England, and in the subsequent winter following their incorporation. Cover crop species tested were forage rape, rye, white mustard, a rye/white mustard mixture, Phacelia and ryegrass. Additional treatments were weeds plus cereal volunteers, a bare fallow and a conventional winter barley crop sown one month later than the cover crops and grown to maturity. Cover crop and bare fallow treatments were followed by spring barley. This was followed by winter barley, as was the conventional winter barley crop. In the winter immediately after establishment, early sown cover crops decreased nitrate leaching by 29–91% compared to bare fallow. They were most effective in a wet winter on the sandy loam where nitrate leaching under bare fallow was greatest. There was little difference between cover crop species with respect to their capacity to decrease nitrate leaching, but losses were consistently smaller under forage rape. The growth of weeds plus cereal volunteers significantly decreased nitrate leaching on the sandy loam compared with a bare fallow, but was less effective on the chalky loam. Nitrate leaching under the later sown winter barley was often greater than under cover crops, but under dry conditions leaching losses were similar. In the longer-term, in most cases, the inclusion of cover crops in predominantly cereal-based cropping systems did not significantly decrease cumulative nitrate leaching compared with two successive winter cereals. In summary, early sown cover crops are most likely to be effective when grown on freely drained sandy soils where the risk of nitrate leaching is greatest. They are less likely to be effective on poorer drained, medium-heavy textured soils in the driest parts of SE England. In these areas the regeneration of weeds and cereal volunteers together with some additional broadcast seed may be sufficient to avoid excessive nitrate losses. In the short-term, mineralization of N derived from the relatively small cover crops grown once every 3–4years in cereal-based cropping systems is unlikely to contribute greatly to nitrate leaching in later years and adjustments to fertilizer N recommendations will not usually be necessary.  相似文献

Our study tests the emerging paradigm that biochemical recalcitrance does not affect substantially long-term (50 years) SOC persistence. We analyzed the molecular composition of SOC in archived soils originating from four European long-term bare fallow experiments (Askov, Rothamsted, Versailles and Ultuna). The soils had been collected after various periods (up to 53 years) under bare fallow. With increasing duration of bare fallow without new organic inputs, the relative abundance of cutin- and suberin-derived compounds declined substantially, and the abundance of lignin-derived compounds was close to zero. Conversely, the relative abundance of plant-derived long-chain alkanes remained almost constant or increased during the bare fallow period. The relative abundance of N-containing compounds, considered to be abundant in SOC derived from microbial activity, increased consistently illustrating that microbial turnover of SOC continues even when plant inputs are stopped. The persistence of the different families of plant-derived compounds differed markedly over the scale of half a century, which may be ascribed to their contrasting chemical characteristics and recalcitrance, or to differences in their interactions with the soil mineral matrix, and likely some combination since chemical composition drives the degree of mineral association. Using soil from this unique set of long-term bare fallow experiments, we provide direct evidence that multi-decadal scale persistent SOC is enriched in microbe-derived compounds but also includes a substantial fraction of plant-derived compounds.  相似文献

Broadcast plantings of nonhost cultivars (alfalfa, barley, bean, onion, potato, and wheat) in soil in redwood boxes (4.2 × 30 × 14 cm) infested with Heterodera schachtii reduced the initial nematode populations (P = 0.05). The reduction was greater with sugarbeets, a host, than with all other cropping treatments except onion, bean, and fallow (P = 0.05). After 80 days, when the root growth of all treatments had completely penetrated the soil, the nematode population was lower under onion than under wheat and barley (P = 0.05). The terminal nematode population (160 days) was lowest under onion, followed by bean, potato, fallow, and alfalfa. The nematode population was less under onion than under fallow, alfalfa, barley, and wheat (P = 0.05). Bean, potato, and fallow nematode populations were less than barley populations (P = 0.05). When broadcast plantings of these cultivars were simulated in microplots, the terminal population (100 days) was significantly lower under onion and bean than fallow (P = 0.05). However, no significant differences in reduction of H. schachtii population density were obtained when commercial row plantings of these crops were simulated in microplots. H. schachtii suppressed growth of barley, tomato, and sugarbeet, but not of bean, onion, alfalfa, or wheat in the greenhouse. The number of wireworms in successive collections from five Cambridgeshire fields declined during the first year of cultivation to 25 % of the number present before the fields were ploughed from old grass. The decline in numbers was accompanied by a change in the composition of the wireworm population; the marked inverse correlation between number and size of larvae, which held for the wireworm populations under grass, progressively altered towards uniform numbers of the different size-groups. The incidence of natural control on the different sizes of larvae was obscured by their growth, and more medium-sized and large larvae were lost than would appear from the population-size histograms.
Three groups of factors are considered as contributing to the decline in numbers after ploughing. Direct observation showed that many wireworms were destroyed in the actual process of cultivation. Evidence was insufficient to prove that the physical condition of cultivated soil adversely affects the number of wireworms. Comparison of the smaller size-groups in pasture and in the cultivated fields showed that the wireworm population failed to replenish itself under arable conditions.  相似文献

Changes in N, P, K, Ca and Mg in soil and rice plants were investigated during a cropping season following a long fallow period in a system of traditional cultivation practised for several centuries, under a village tank irrigation system. Soil, N, P, K, Ca and Mg were not found to be deficient for rice production throughout the season. Flooding did not produce toxic levels of Fe and Na and soil pH remained at 6.4 during the season. The average grain yield (3.5 t/ha) without any addition of chemical fertilizer was almost the same as that from fields under major irrigation systems where fertilizer application (less than the recommended level) was common. The sustainability of soil fertility under the traditional system of rice cultivation appears to be dependent upon long fallow periods. The natural build-up of soil fertility during a three-year fallow was evidently adequate to support a good growth of the crop which produced a yield comparable to that obtained in chemically fertilized, more intensively cropped rice fields under major irrigation systems.  相似文献

Field experiments in the subtropical Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas were conducted to determine the extent of adult boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), dispersal from cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fields during harvest operations and the noncotton-growing ("overwinter") period between 1 September and 1 February. Using unbaited large capacity boll weevil traps placed at intervals extending outward from commercial field edges, boll weevils did not move in substantial numbers during harvest much beyond 30 m, primarily in the direction of prevailing winds. From traps placed in fallow cotton; citrus; lake edge; pasture; treeline; sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, and sugarcane, Saccharum spp., habitats during the overwinter period, the most boll weevils were collected in the fallow cotton fields and adjacent treelines during the fall. However, the greatest abundances of boll weevils were found in citrus orchards in the spring, before newly planted cotton fields began to square. One of the three lake edges also harbored substantial populations in the spring. Egg development in females was not detected between November and April, but in cotton fields most females were gravid between May and August when cotton fruiting bodies were available. Mated females, as determined by discoloration of the spermatheca, made up 80-100% of the female population during November and December but declined to approximately 50% in February. The lower incidence of mating indicates a reduction in physical activity, regardless of overwinter habitat, until percentages increased in March and April after cotton fields had been planted and squares were forming.  相似文献

Field borders are an effective conservation strategy for providing habitat to overwintering sparrows, and may be a venue through which beneficial insect populations are promoted. However, traditional fallow field borders lack sufficient pollen and nectar sources required to sustain beneficial insect populations; therefore, borders planted to a mix of native prairie flowers and grasses may be needed if increases in beneficial insect populations are desired. Although the value of fallow borders to birds has been established, little is known about bird use of beneficial insect habitats. Using single-observer transect surveys, we compared overwintering sparrow densities among 4 field border treatments (planted native warm season grasses and prairie flowers, planted prairie flowers only, fallow, and mowed) replicated around 9 organic crop fields from November to March 2009–2010 and 2010–2011. Sparrow densities were 5–10 times lower in mowed borders than in other border treatments in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011, but did not differ among planted and fallow borders in either year. Planted field borders may be a useful conservation practice for providing habitat for both overwintering sparrows and beneficial insects. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Nest-site choice and reproductive success of Curlews Numenius arquata in different habitats were studied at a mixed farmland site (grasslands and flooded tilled fields relatively common) and at an arable farmland site (dry tilled fields more dominant than at the mixed site) in central Sweden. At both sites Curlews preferred to nest on grassland and fallow fields, where hatching success was higher than on tillage fields. Nests were also situated further away from forest edges than random sites, but hatching success did not vary with distance to the forest edge. Only 35.6% of the pairs were estimated to hatch young. The main cause of nest loss was predation and the second most important factor was destruction by farming practices, which was an important factor in tillage early in season. Surprisingly, nest survival was higher at the arable than at the mixed farmland site, probably being an effect of the increased proportion of fallowing during recent years. Mortality of chicks was 79.7% before fledgling age (both sites combined) and, surprisingly, chick survival was lower on meadows than on arable fields and leys. The mean production of young was only 0.25 fledglings per pair, which is lower than in areas less affected by farming practice. The low production of young is probably an important factor in the decline of Curlew populations on Swedish farmland. On bogs 1.4 fledglings per pair were produced, indicating that reproductive success of Curlews is higher in more natural habitats.  相似文献

Pitfall traps were used to monitor the activity of ants in a forest floor and a one-year-old fallow plot in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, at monthly intervals between November 1980 and October 1981. Similar studies were carried out between October 1987 and June 1988. These studies also included manual collection of ants from the floor of the experimental plots Of all the 10 species of ants recorded, Pbeihk crassinoda was the most abundant in the forest and fallow plots both in 1980–81 and 1987–88. P. crassinoda accounted for 52 percent and 88 percent of the ant populations collected manually from the forest and fallow plots respectively between December 1987 and June 1988. This species was also significantly higher in the pitfall catches of the fallow than the forest plots. Pitfall traps were not effective in sampling the populations of the belligerent Dorylus nigricans. The data are consistent with the widely accepted notion that forested areas support less ants than unforested areas. Differences in physical habitat characteristics, food availability, nesting habits, predation and microenvironmental factors were considered responsible for the differences in activities and abundance of ants in the forest and fallow plots.  相似文献
