This paper presents a technique to estimate little auk population size from the area of the colonies measured by the use of video recordings and aerial photographs. To transform colony area into population size, breeding densities obtained from the literature were used. The study area, Northumberland Island, Thule District, Northwest Greenland, revealed between 6 and 12 million km2 inhabited colony area, which was classified into three categories for colony identification. The lower figure of this estimate is equivalent to a little auk population of 4.6 million pairs. An extrapolation to the rest of the Thule District should be treated with care but would amount to at least 33 million pairs. There is no doubt that the methods used would benefit from more fine-scale ground-truth surveys in the Thule District.  相似文献

During the last decade, increasing information on little auk (Alle alle) biology, ecology and behaviour has been reported. However, only a few of these studies have focused on the breeding population in the Avanersuaq (Thule) district of Northwest Greenland, where 80 % of the global little auk population is estimated to breed. This study reports on the chick diet composition from one of the largest colonies, the Paakitsoq colony, located on the south-eastern margin of the North Water (NOW) Polynya. Results revealed the highest proportion of Calanus hyperboreus, a large lipid-rich copepod, in chick diet reported for any little auk colony. Results confirmed that the cold, highly productive waters of the NOW Polynya are favourable foraging grounds for the little auks during the breeding season. Species diversity within and between the chick meals was low, which probably reflects a high availability of a few preferred prey species. Individual chick meals were generally low in number of prey items and total energy content compared with other published results. This may be explained by a higher feeding frequency or by the samples being collected late in the breeding period (during late chick rearing), when chicks have a reduced growth rate and may require less energy than at earlier developmental stages.  相似文献

Large areas with hydrocarbon prospects offshore northwest Greenland necessitate seabird studies in this region. The little auk population breeding in Thule District is the largest seabird population in northwest Greenland, as well as the largest known population of this species. In 1994 and 1995 we mapped the distribution of little auk colonies in Thule District during aerial surveys. Most colonies are situated in sloping screes facing the sea, some as far as 11 km from the coast in valleys or facing glaciers. The total horizontal extent of the colonies is about 400 km. Our surveys generally confirm previous and local knowledge, although the information obtained is more detailed. Received: 11 November 1996 / Accepted: 21 September 1997  相似文献

Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population surveys were conducted during 1996–2002 in the island of Crete (Greece) to document population status and structure. Fieldwork was carried out during the breeding period when birds could be monitored in their colonies. Total population size was estimated at 379 individuals (range = 341–417) with adult birds comprising 63%. The breeding population was estimated at 141 pairs, which were distributed on an average in 23 colonies per year (range = 16–30) while the mean number of breeding pairs that laid eggs was 98 (range= 64–126). Crete thus supports the largest insular population of the species in the world and hosts 70–80% of the breeding population of the species in Greece. Population density was estimated at 6.9 individuals/100 km2, 2.6 breeding pairs/100 km2 and 1.8 nesting pairs/100 km2. The average home range of an occupied colony (i.e., breeding group) was estimated at ca. 204 km2 producing a theoretical foraging range of 8 km radius around the breeding cliff. No trends in the total number of individuals and breeding pairs appeared to exist, although significant differences in population size of individual colonies occurred between the years. The majority of the population was concentrated in small-sized colonies, which showed a low occupancy rate. The number of abandoned sites and the colonization of new ones could represent a shift of breeding pairs to alternative colonies provoked by local food abundance and conspesific attraction.  相似文献

Aim Estimates of abundances and densities of birds and mammals have often been shown to be scale dependent, in that population sizes over large areas are overestimated if extrapolated from surveys of small plots. Previous tests of the mechanisms suggested to cause this decelerating scaling pattern found evidence of a biased choice of small plots in patches of homogeneous habitat. Here we show that negative density–area relationships can also arise as result of not considering plots where individuals of the species or assemblage of interest are absent in surveys of differing spatial resolution. Location We took a complete census of violets (Viola spp.) in 800 m2 of chalk grassland in Wye, Kent, UK, and used human population censuses for Finnish, Swiss and Italian municipalities, English districts, states of the USA and European countries. Methods We used mixed models of logarithmically transformed number of individuals or densities as a function of area. Results The census of violets shows that by increasing the survey resolution and by not considering plots without individuals, the effectively occupied area diminishes and a negative density–area relationship arises. The finding that negative density–area relationships are also common for people is evidence that the non‐random choice of plots in population surveys of varying areas can be responsible for many observed negative density–area relationships. The shallower slope of the people–administrative area relationship for Switzerland and Finland compared with Italy, as well as for England and the USA compared with Europe, confirms that less than proportionate individuals–area relationships can be the consequence of larger plot areas containing a higher proportion of areas without individuals. Main conclusions Densities should be reported together with the effective areas for which they were estimated. It should be clearly conveyed whether or not plots where the surveyed species was absent were included in the density estimation.  相似文献

Restoration of the longleaf pine ecosystems of the southeastern United States has focused interest on the regeneration and establishment of Aristida sp. (wiregrass) as a means to reestablish ecological function and structure of the ecosystem. This study examined dispersal distance from planted adults and canopy cover and density effects on establishment and reproduction. In 1994 wiregrass plugs were planted in two densities (500 seedlings/100 m2 and 49 seedlings/100 m2) and three canopy‐thinning treatments (25 m2 basal area/ha, 16 m2 basal area/ha, and 8 m2 basal area/ha) were implemented in a 20‐year‐old longleaf plantation in southwestern Georgia. Due to the intense site preparation and the density of pines planted, virtually no understory vegetation was present. The site was burned in June 1995, which promoted seed production of the planted wiregrass. Results indicate that the 8 m2 basal area/ha treatment results in larger plants that in turn produce a greater number of seedling recruits. No seedling recruitment occurred in control plots. Dispersal distances of up to 594 cm were recorded. Natural seedling recruitment occurred at low‐density transplanting (5 plants/10 m2), denoting that high‐density planting similar to natural density (5 plants/m2) is not required for successful establishment or reproduction. However, overstory thinning in dense pine plantations is required for reproduction and increases the survival of individual plants due to changes in the environmental conditions at the forest floor.  相似文献

To assess the effect of an inundative release of entomopathogenic nematodes on soil organisms, population densities of soil-dwelling organisms were monitored before and after an application of an aqueous suspension of Heterorhabditis megidis to field plots in mown grassland (Exp. I) at a level of 0.38 million/m2 and to plots (Exp. II) situated in a forested area, a grass sports field and an orchard at a level of 1.5 million/m2. At the forested site, heat-killed H. megidis (1.5 million/m2) also were applied to two plots to compare the impact on soil organisms of a large introduction of living and dead nematodes. Post-treatment, temporary changes in natural population densities of several nematode genera and other organisms were detected in H. megidis-treated plots in both experiments. Temporary changes in the nematode trophic structure occurred in the percentages of nematode omnivores, herbivores and predators in both experiments. Evidence from all sites suggests that the changes were temporary and that the presence of decaying H. megidis following treatment contributed to nutrient enrichment of the soil and to direct and indirect effects on the nematode community.  相似文献

Uniformity of root yield and plant density of sugar beet was assessed on four areas each of 250 small plots-two in each of the years 1969 and 1970. Plots from which 2–5-100 m2 of crop was harvested from the centre rows were constructed and their coefficients of variation calculated. Coefficient of variation decreased as harvested area increased, but little additional accuracy was achieved by harvesting more than 40 m2. Plots drilled-to-a-stand appeared no more variable in root yield or plant density than carefully hand-singled plots.  相似文献

The nesting areas of 13 pairs of Black Woodpecker (0.41 pairs/km2) and 12 pairs of White-backed Woodpecker (0.38 pairs/km2) were mapped in the Quinto Real forest (Spanish western Pyrenees). Nearest-neighbour analysis indicated a uniform spacing of Black Woodpecker territories and, as both species occupied the most developed beechwoods, White-backed and Black territories showed an aggregated distribution. The local distribution appears to be determined by forest structure. Principal components analysis indicated that forest plots occupied by the woodpeckers had a high percentage of beech in old forest (with a total basal area of tree boles above 20 m2/ha) and with many large trees (diameter at breast height, dbh, over 60 cm).  相似文献

Flightless birds were once the largest and heaviest terrestrial fauna on many archipelagos around the world. Robust approaches for estimating their population parameters are essential for understanding prehistoric insular ecosystems and extinction processes. Body mass and population density are negatively related for extant flightless bird species, providing a method for quantifying densities and population sizes of extinct flightless species. Here we assemble an updated global data set of body mass and population densities for extant flightless birds and estimate the relationship between these variables. We use generalised least squares models that account for phylogenetic relatedness and incorporate the effects of limiting factors (e.g. habitat suitability) on population density. We demonstrate the applicability of this allometric relationship to extinct species by estimating densities for each of the nine species of moa (Dinornithiformes) and generating a combined spatially explicit map of total moa density across New Zealand. To compare our density estimates with those previously published, we summed individual species' abundances to generate a mean national density of 2.02–9.66 birds km−2 for low- and high-density scenarios, respectively. Our results reconcile the extreme bimodality of previous estimates (< 2 birds km−2 and > 10 birds km−2) and are comparable to contemporary densities of large herbivorous wild mammals introduced into New Zealand about 150 yr ago. The revised moa density has little effect on the harvest rates required to bring about extinction within 150–200 yr, indicating that rapid extinction was an inevitable response to human hunting, irrespective of the initial population of moa.  相似文献

The nest density distribution of yellow-legged gulls Larus cachinnans was investigated on the large Marseille archipelago colony (south-east France) which houses c. 18 000 breeding pairs. The study was performed at two investigation scales, including both mean nesting density on the nine study islands and density distribution within 171 sampling plots. The mean nesting density on each island was negatively correlated with island surface area and with the distance from the initial colony location (south-east end of the archipelago). No significant correlation was found with the other island parameters analysed (maximum elevation, shape index and distance from continent). A partial least squares regression performed between denstiy data from 171 500 m2 sampling plots and environmental variables showed that the mostly explaining factors were island isolation and percentage of rocks in the plots (positive correlation), and distance of the island from the south-east end of the archipelago, island area, distance from plot to seaside and percentage of stone in the plots (negative correlation). Thus in our case, vegetation parameters (cover and height) were not influencial factors in nest density distribution.  相似文献

Summary A parasitoid assemblage consisting of four hymenopteran species caused larval and pupal mortality of the host Gnorimoschema gallaeosolidaginis. In the absence of discrete host patches, the relationship between densities of hosts and parasitized hosts was examined on scales of 0.25, 1, 4, 16 and 25 m2 within a 400 m2 plot and between ten 16 m2 plots within a 1·3 km2 area. Within the 400 m2 plot, positive density dependence was observed on scales of 1, 4 and 16 m2. Rates of parasitism were found to be density independent across the ten 16 m2 plots. The nature of parasitoid and host spatial patterns were examined at the 400 m2 plot by using Goodall's (1974) paired-quadrat variance function, and by fitting the observed distribution of galls and parasitized galls to the Poisson and negative binomial on three scales. Postive density dependence at the 400 m2 plot occurred in the context of a host density gradient and may indicate aggregation of search time by parasitoids. However, significant responses on scales of 4 and 16 m2 may only reflect the sum of parasitoid responses on lower scales because of this gradient. Predominance of significant responses on a 1 m2 scale may be related to the high degree of variation in host density, and limits to active searching range of parasitoids.  相似文献

Abstract

Between 2001 and 2006, we systematically sampled the entire coast of Whenua Hou, a rugged offshore island in southern New Zealand, to estimate the population densities of sooty shearwaters (Puffinus griseus) and mottled petrels (Pterodroma inexpectata) by counting the entrances of breeding burrows. A two‐step regression modelling process using binomial errors was used to predict the presence of a colony, and a normal general linear model was used to predict the density of entrances within colonies. Aerial photography, GIS and a Digital Elevation Model were used to extract relevant habitat and location variables, and a combination of both regression models was used to predict the density of breeding burrows within each 5.32 m2 pixel on the island. This complex GIS and habitat prediction modelling approach gave population estimates very similar to a more traditional simple area extrapolation method and gave no improvement in precision. However, correction for the slope of the land increased our simple area estimates of population size by 11%. We estimate populations of sooty shearwater and mottled petrel breeding pairs at 173 000 (162 000–190 000) and 160 000 (123 000–197 000) respectively. Based on this number of breeding pairs, we calculate that Whenua Hou supports a total population of 868 000 (554 000–1 270 000) sooty shearwaters. Our estimate of the total mottled petrel population 202 000 pairs (162 000–242 000) is comparable with the only published estimate, but could be an underestimate because mottled petrels are sometimes found in large burrows. More research for robust estimation of population trends is needed to assess the conservation status of mottled petrels.  相似文献

The natural forest of Masha was studied to determine the species composition and population structure of woody species in the area. A total of 130 plant species belonging 61 families were recorded, in which family Acanthaceae was represented by 11 species followed by Rubiaceae (10) and Asteraceae (9). The composition and population structure of woody species, with diameter at breast height (DBH) >2.5 cm and height >2 m, and their regeneration were assessed in 65 sample plots of 400 m2 each. The density for trees and shrubs with DBH >2.5 cm was 1681 ind.ha?1, and the basal area of the study area was 142.6 mha?1. Four community types were recognized. This forest is of international and national conservation importance given its high biodiversity. Managing the remaining forest would be an appropriate option for sustainable management of biodiversity.  相似文献

Little is known of the ecology and population dynamics of the world’s largest avian frugivore. This study investigated the population of endangered southern cassowary at Mission Beach, northeast Australia, and examined the problems associated with determining population size and density of this keystone species. Using the results of an intensive field survey aimed at estimating absolute numbers of individual cassowaries, the appropriate sampling methodology for rare and elusive species was explored. Approximately 102 km2 of rainforest was surveyed using 346 km of search transects. Of a total of 110 cassowaries, there were 49 adults (28 male, 19 female, 2 unknown), 28 subadults, 31 chicks, and 2 independent birds of unknown status. This is approximately 35% of the adult population previously estimated for the Mission Beach area. Overall adult cassowary density was 0.48 adults/km2; the density of independent birds, i.e. adults and subadults, was 0.78 birds/km2. Mean indicative home range (IHR) for adult females and males was 2.13 and 2.06 km2, respectively. Mean IHR of subadults was smaller at 0.95 km2. It was concluded that the previous practice of surveying small areas at Mission Beach (<4 km2) has led to consistent overestimation of cassowary population density, up to six times its real number. It is shown that a sample plot between 5 and 15 km2 is necessary to approximate true cassowary density. These findings have significant application to the conservation of cassowaries in New Guinea and in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Australia.  相似文献

Cell culture density is shown to alter the parameters characterizing phagocytic activity of cells in vitro. Phagocytosis index (PI, mean number of beads per cell in the bead-containing population) and phagocytosis percent (PP, percentage of bead-containing cells in cell population under study) for IC-21 macrophages incubated in the presence of non-opsonized 2-μm fluorescent latex beads were determined using fluorescent microscopy and ImageJ software specially adapted for the purpose. Under control conditions (DMEM without serum), increase in cell culture density was accompanied with a decrease of both parameters of the phagocytic activity. At a mean density of 4 cells/105 μm2 (9 cells per a viewfield) PI was 7.1 ± 0.2 beads/cell and at 20 cells/105 μm2 (40 cells per a viewfield) PI dropped to 4.6 ± 0.1 beads/cell. PP was less sensitive, varied in the range of 95–100% but also decreased as the cell density grew. At any density, PI was 1.5–2 times higher than the expected value (number of beads per μm2 × cell contour area); apparently this divergence can be accounted for by cell locomotion and capture of a larger number of beads than could drop onto a motionless cell with a constant contour area. Increase in cell density was also accompanied by a decrease of the cell contour area (S c), which amounted to 750 ± 16 μm2 at a density of 4 cells/105 μm2 and 346 ± 4 μm2 at a density of 20 cells/105 μm2. As the bead concentration was the same in all experiments, density-dependent decrease in PI and PP may be related with the observed decrease in cell contour area. Yet, the bead number per cell area unit (PI/S c) was bigger at higher density and PI/S c was higher in cells with smaller S c. Thus, individual (specific) activity of the cells did not lessen with an increase of the cell culture density in the range studied (4–20 cells/105 μm2). Reduction of the cell contour area may reflect alteration in cell adhesion to the substrate as well as competitive relations between adhesion and phagocytic processes. The data obtained imply that cell culture density has to be controlled as a factor notably altering the phagocytic activity parameters. Grey partridge Perdix perdix populations were monitored in the years 1991–2004 in ten agricultural areas (100–200 km2 each) located in various regions of Poland. Spring density (call counts in March/April) and parameters describing reproductive success (counts of adult and young birds in coveys found in August) were estimated, and annual survival rate of adult birds was calculated. In the 1990s, the mean spring density of grey partridge in Poland showed a threefold decrease. In 1993 (the year of the highest mean density), from 4.6 pairs/km2 to 20.0 pairs/km2 were found in individual areas; whereas in 2004, there were from 0.4 pairs/km2 to 8.3 pairs/km2. The mean brood-production rate in individual years ranged from 29% to 49% (overall mean 36.8%), the chick-survival rate from 31% to 56% (43.1%), the young production from 1.6 to 2.8 young per adult (2.32 young/adult) and the annual survival rate of adult birds from 25% to 33% (28.3%). The population decrease in the 1990s was connected with the drop of reproductive success, including both the brood-production rate and the chick-survival rate, as well as with the decline of annual survival rate of adult birds. The decrease of brood-production rate and adult-survival rate probably resulted mainly from increased abundance of nest and incubating female predators (particularly foxes). Fluctuations in chick-survival rate were related to weather conditions, but also slight long-term decline was recorded, probably due to more intensive pesticide use.  相似文献

Delayed maturity, low fecundity, and high adult survival are traits typical for species with a long‐life expectancy. For such species, even a small change in adult survival can strongly affect the population dynamics and viability. We examined the effects of both regional and local climatic variability on adult survival of the little auk, a long‐lived and numerous Arctic seabird species. We conducted a mark‐resighting study for a period of 8 years (2006‐2013) simultaneously at three little auk breeding sites that are influenced by the West Spitsbergen Current, which is the main carrier of warm, Atlantic water into the Arctic. We found that the survival of adult little auks was negatively correlated with both the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and local summer sea surface temperature (SST), with a time lag of 2 and 1 year, respectively. The effects of NAO and SST were likely mediated through a change in food quality and/or availability: (1) reproduction, growth, and development of Arctic Calanus copepods, the main prey of little auks, are negatively influenced by a reduction in sea ice, reduced ice algal production, and an earlier but shorter lasting spring bloom, all of which result from an increased NAO; (2) a high sea surface temperature shortens the reproductive period of Arctic Calanus, decreasing the number of eggs produced. A synchronous variation in survival rates at the different colonies indicates that climatic forcing was similar throughout the study area. Our findings suggest that a predicted warmer climate in the Arctic will negatively affect the population dynamics of the little auk, a high Arctic avian predator.  相似文献

The recovery process of aSasa tsuboiana population after a mass flowering and death in 1977 was investigated by 15 years of observation in the Hira Mountains, Kinki district, western Japan. Seed production was high (6600–13 800 seeds m−2 inSasa plots and 3900 seeds m−2 in a forest plot) but emergent seedling density was low (14–21 seedlings m−2), probably because of seed predation byMicrotus montebelli occurring between seed shedding and the next spring. The seedling density had decreased further by the next year and theS. tsuboiana population recovered from only a limited number of seedlings. In spite of such a low initial density, theS. tsuboiana population was able to regenerate successfully and attained the previous full stand height in 7–16 years.Miscantbus sinensis invaded and delayed the recovery ofS. tsuboiana in one plot, butS. tsuboiana became dominant as it caught up with the height ofM. sinensis. Seedling growth patterns, such as frequent tillering, the onset of rhizome extension in the early stage of seedling growth and frequent culm production from rhizomes, played important roles in the successful regeneration ofS. tsuboiana.  相似文献

To predict the growth and spread of an insect population introduced for the biological control of weeds, one must first understand the factors affecting the movement of individuals in the population. The purpose of this study was to determine how the dispersal rate of Aphthona lacertosa (Rosenhauer) (Chrysomelidae) was affected by conspecific density and by the characteristics of leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.: Euphorbiaceae) in patches where these beetles feed. In 2002 in Manitoba and in 2003 in Alberta, Canada, between 200 and 2500 insects were released in small patches (<10 m2) of spurge. The number and location of beetles within patches was monitored over subsequent days. In 1 m2 plots within patches, spurge ramet density, the proportions of vegetative and reproductive ramets, and ramet height were measured. In both years, beetle movement within patches and emigration from patches, was not affected by conspecific density. In Manitoba in 2002, beetles aggregated non-randomly on either vegetative or reproductive ramets within plots, but plot characteristics were not related to the formation of aggregations. In Alberta in 2003, plots in which beetles aggregated had significantly higher spurge density but did not differ in either the proportion of vegetative ramets or in the amount of non-spurge vegetation. These results suggest that density-dependent dispersal does not limit the population's ability to reach densities up to 2500 beetles/m2.  相似文献
