Performing stressful procedures in view of cage mates may cause stress in observer animals. However, it is not known if stressful procedures performed in close proximity to, but not in view of cage mates are stressful for the (observer) cage mates. Radiotelemetry and postmortem in vitro studies of the vas deferens were used to determine the effects of stress on observers. Heart rate (HR) and core body temperature (cBT) were recorded for 1 h following weighing of a cage mate or 1 h during restraint of a cage mate and the hour following return of the restrained mouse to the cage. This procedure was repeated daily for 15 days. HR and cBT were increased in observers during both restraint and weighing of cage mates. Analysis of the area under the curve showed that HR and cBT in observers were significantly higher during restraint of a cage mate than after weighing of a cage mate. When mice were returned to the cage after weighing or restraint, HR and cBT were significantly higher in the cage mates of restrained animals. Comparison between days 1, 3, 7 and 14 found that, as the experiment progressed, HR and cBT were significantly reduced in the observer mice during the hour following return of the cage mates after restraint. Results from previous studies have shown that chronic stress causes the vas deferens to become hypersensitive to exogenous application of noradrenaline (NAd). In this study, vas deferens from observers of restraint had a significantly increased response to NAd. These results indicate that stressful procedures should be conducted in isolation from other mice.  相似文献

One way to evaluate sexual arousal is by measuring approach behavior to sexual incentive stimuli. In our case we measure approach behavior to an originally non-preferred compartment which is associated with the physiological state induced by mating. This change of preference indicative of a positive affective (reward) state can be evaluated by conditioned place preference (CPP). We have shown that the CPP induced by paced mating is mediated by opioids. The administration of opioids also induces a reward state. The present study was designed to compare the rewarding properties of paced mating and a morphine injection. One group of females was allowed to pace the sexual interaction before being placed in the non-preferred compartment. In alternate sessions they received a morphine injection before being placed in the preferred compartment. In another group of females, the treatments were reversed. Only the females placed in the originally non-preferred compartment after paced mating changed their original preference, suggesting that paced mating induces a positive affective, reward, state of higher intensity than a morphine injection of 1 mg/kg. In a second experiment we determined if females allowed to pace the sexual interaction for 1 h would still developed CPP. No change in preference was observed in the females that mated for 1 h without pacing the sexual interaction. On the other hand, females that received between 10 and 15 paced intromissions as well as females that paced the sexual interaction for 1 h developed a clear CPP. The second experiment demonstrated that pacing is rewarding even in an extended mating session in which the females received around 25 intromissions and several ejaculations. These results further demonstrate the biological relevance associated with the ability of the female to space coital stimulation received during mating. This positive affective state will contribute to increase sexual arousal the next time a rat finds an appropriate mate.  相似文献

Empathy is an emotional response to display of distress in others and reversed-empathy is an emotional response to non-distressed others in distressed subjects. Stress has memory enhancing effect on aversive experience. Here, I examine empathy and reversed empathy using the memory enhancing effects of stress in mice. Restrain stress enhanced aversive memory of a floor with electric shock, but restrain stress, with cage mates also restrained, reduced the enhancing effect. On the other hand, restrain stress with free-moving cage mates increased the memory enhancing effect, suggesting the stronger stress. This is the reversed-empathy. Level of corticosterone is the highest after the restrain with free-moving mates and lowest after the restrain with restrained mates.  相似文献

Predation risk can alter female mating decisions because the costs of mate searching and selecting attractive mates increase when predators are present. In response to predators, females have been found to plastically adjust mate preference within species, but little is known about how predators alter sexual isolation and hybridization among species. We tested the effects of predator exposure on sexual isolation between benthic and limnetic threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.). Female discrimination against heterospecific mates was measured before and after females experienced a simulated attack by a trout predator or a control exposure to a harmless object. In the absence of predators, females showed increased aversion to heterospecifics over time. We found that predator exposure made females less discriminating and precluded this learned aversion to heterospecifics. Benthic and limnetic males differ in coloration, and predator exposure also affected sexual isolation by weakening female preferences for colourful males. Predator effects on sexual selection were also tested but predators had few effects on female choosiness among conspecific mates. Our results suggest that predation risk may disrupt the cognitive processes associated with mate choice and lead to fluctuations in the strength of sexual isolation between species.  相似文献

The influence of progesterone on sexual and aggressive behaviors during aggressive encounters was investigated in pairs of TP-treated male and female rats. Gonadectomized females, chronically injected with testosterone propionate (TP), showed low but consistent levels of feminine sexual behavior which alternated with aggression. Progesterone when given in addition to TP facilitated receptive and proceptive behaviors, but reduced levels of aggression. In TP-treated males, levels of aggression were the same as observed in TP-treated females. However, TP-treated males seldomly showed sexual behavior during aggressive encounters and additional treatment with progesterone did not affect their behavior. After the aggression tests, animals were tested in a social preference test in which an ovariectomized female cage mate and the opponent from the aggressive encounter served as incentives. Positive correlations between levels of aggression and social preference for an opponent were found in both sexes, although correlations only reached statistical significance when progesterone was given in addition to TP. These correlations were found in both sexes, despite the fact that group analysis revealed pronounced sex differences in social preference: males preferred to spend their time near ovariectomized female cage mates, whereas females divided their time equally among female cage mates and opponents.  相似文献

While the presence of predators can influence female mate choice, few studies have investigated how females respond to quantitative variation in predation risk. In addition, we know little of how females respond to multiple, independent cues of risk. In this study, we investigated the effects of simulated predation risk on mate choice in túngara frogs, Physalaemus pustulosus, using the advertisement calls of predatory frogs, variation in ambient light, and simulated distance. Females showed aversion to conspecific calls associated with the calls of predators, and females were significantly less likely to travel perceived longer distances while the calls of predatory frogs were broadcast. In both the laboratory and field, females chose among potential mates significantly faster under higher light levels. Female responses to acoustic cues of predation risk were significantly influenced by light level, but decisions about travel distances were not. These results demonstrate that female choice is strongly influenced by perceived predation risk and that females can simultaneously evaluate quantitative variation in different cues of predation risk. The changes in search behavior and mate evaluation we demonstrate indicate that predation plays a strong role in limiting signal evolution and possibly reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Investigations of parasite-mediated sexual selection have concentratedon the effects of parasites on males. Differences in femalesusceptibility to parasitic infection may also cause variationin reproductive behavior. I propose two alternative hypothesesto explain how infected females may alter their mate samplingbehavior. In the first hypothesis, infected females sample fewerprospective mates because chronic parasitic infection imposesenergetic costs that limit the time and calories that a femalecan expend in mate searching. A novel alternative hypothesisis that females recognize their own susceptibility to infectionand thus invest more time searching for a male phenotype thatindicates he offers genes complementary to her genome. In recombination,these good genes would allow her offspring to better resistparasites despite their mother's susceptibility. I examinedthe mate sampling behavior of experimentally infected wild turkeyhens when presented with an array of males, and compared themto control hens. Infected females did not invest more time assessingindividuals, did not wait longer to choose a male, nor werethey less likely to solicit during the trial. They did differfrom control females in that they visited more males beforesoliciting copulation and exhibited different preference functionsfor snood length. These results suggest that females are notso energetically restricted by latent coccidia infection thatthey must hurry to find a mate. Instead, it appears that infectedfemales assess a larger set of males as prospective mates, perhapsto increase the opportunity to obtain complementary genes forparasite resistance.  相似文献

The strength and specificity of attraction between mated pairs of red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus) were tested in the laboratory. Test individuals were placed in a choice situation in which they could indicate their preference, by proximity and quality of behavior measures, to either their pair mate in an adjoining cage or an alternative in a second adjoining cage (same-sex animal, opposite-sex animal, or an empty cage). The test animals showed a significant preference to be in visual contact and proximity with their pair mates instead of the alternative when it was an animal of the same sex as the test individual or an empty cage. However, when the choice was between their pair mate and an animal of the opposite sex, no preference for their pair mate was apparent. No sex differences were found. It is concluded that attraction to a pair mate is not sufficient to maintain a pair bond, and when pairs ofS. labiatus breed monogamously, the pair relationship is likely to be maintained, at least in part, through aggression between same-sex individuals.  相似文献

Despite intense interest in mate choice, relatively little isknown about how individuals sample prospective mates. Indeed,a key issue is whether females sample males or simply matewith the first male encountered. We investigated mate samplingby female barking treefrogs (Hyla gratiosa). Females choosingmates in natural choruses did not move between males but insteadmated with the first male they approached closely. Most femalesmated with the male closest to them at the start of their mate-choiceprocess, and females were more likely to mate with the closest male when the distance to other males was large. These observationsare consistent with the hypothesis that females do not samplepotential mates but instead mate with the first male they distinguishfrom the rest of the chorus. To test this initial detectionhypothesis, we conducted a playback experiment in which weoffered females a choice between two calls, one of which was detectable above the background chorus sound at the female'srelease point, and one of which became detectable only as femalesmoved toward the initially detectable call. Females did notprefer the initially detectable call, thus ruling out the initialdetection hypothesis and implicating sampling of potentialmates by females. Based on the behavior of females in natural choruses, we hypothesize that females approach the chorus, moveto locations where they are able to detect the calls of severalmales simultaneously, and choose a mate from among these malesat some distance from the males. Such simultaneous samplingmay be common in lekking and chorusing species, which havebeen the subjects of many studies of sexual selection.  相似文献

Little information is available on the response of vervet monkeys to different housing conditions or on the suitability of enrichment devices or methods for vervet monkeys. In this study, the authors evaluated the occurrence of stereotyped behavior in adult vervet monkeys under various conditions of housing and enrichment. The variables included cage size, cage level (upper or lower), enrichment with a foraging log, enrichment with an exercise cage and presence of a mate. The authors first determined the incidence of stereotyped behavior in captive-bred, singly housed adult female and male vervet monkeys. They then exposed monkeys to different housing and enrichment situations and compared the incidence of stereotyped behavior among the monkeys. The authors found that more females than males engaged in stereotyped behavior and that females, on average, engaged in such behavior for longer periods of time than males. Stereotyped behavior was most often associated with a small, single cage. The average amount of observed stereotyped activity in monkeys housed in a small cage was significantly lower when the monkeys had access to either a foraging log or an exercise cage. Stereotyped behavior was also lower in female monkeys that were housed (either with a male or without a male) in a larger cage. The least amount of abnormal behavior was associated with the largest, most complex and enriched housing situation. Males and females housed in cages on the lower level of two-level housing engaged in more stereotyped behavior than did monkeys housed in the upper level, regardless of the presence or type of enrichment provided.  相似文献

In marmosets, social synchrony between circadian profiles of activity is stronger in animals that cohabit in a family. The activity of three breeding pairs was recorded by actiwatches to investigate the mechanisms involved in the synchrony between the circadian activity profiles during cohabitation in marmoset reproductive pairs. The dyads were submitted to LD 12:12 (21 days) and LL: 1) cohabitation (24 days), 2) removal of the cage mate (20 days), 3) reintroduction of the mate into the cage of the 1st situation (30 days) and 4) removal of the cage mate (7 days). Next, they were rejoined and maintained in LD 12:12 (11 days). In conditions involving cohabitation of pair, the general and maximum correlation indexes between circadian profiles were higher in cage mates compared to animals of the same or different sex with which they maintain only acoustic and olfactive contact. This strong synchrony between rhythms was accompanied by a stable phase relationship at the activity onset and offset, with identical circadian periods between mates. When the pairs were separated, there was a break in stability in the phase relationships between activity profiles with different circadian periods and a greater phase angle difference between rhythms of cage mates. During separation, two females and one male progressively anticipated the activity onset and offset in a phase similar to that in previous conditions, expressing entrainment to the mate. During the first reintroduction, two pairs exhibited signs of masking in rhythm. Although modulation in the rhythm of some animals has been observed through acoustic cues from animals outside the colony, we suggest that cohabitation favors strong synchrony between the circadian activity profiles of marmoset reproductive pairs involving synchronization by entrainment and masking. Further studies in the absence of external social cues are necessary to clarify the role of these mechanisms on social synchronization in marmosets.  相似文献

Disruption of the pair bond between socially monogamous animals leads to changes in behavior, which may have reproductive consequences. There are two alternative hypotheses to explain the effect of the length of time since pair bond disruption on subsequent reproduction. One hypothesis predicts that voles housed immediately with a new opposite-sex conspecific will be as likely to produce litters and will produce them as quickly as voles separated from their initial mate for longer. Alternatively, if attachment between mates is enduring, we expect that more voles separated longer from their previous mates will produce litters and produce them sooner than voles re-paired immediately after separation from their initial mates. Woodland voles, paired with opposite-sex conspecifics, remained together until parturition. Mates were then separated for 0, 7, or 14 days until re-pairing with an opposite-sex conspecific. Pair bond disruption did not prevent males and females from mating subsequently, which was consistent with data from our breeding colony. In addition, the length of time an individual remained alone after pair bond disruption did not affect the latency to produce a litter. Our results show that having been paired previously does not affect subsequent reproduction in this socially monogamous vole.  相似文献

The influence of mating practices on genetic structure has been an area of great interest for anthropologists. In this paper, the techniques of potential mates analysis are employed to explore the mating patterns observed among the Jirels, a tribal population of eastern Nepal. Genealogical, anthropometric, dermatoglyphic, and demographic data for members of seven Jirel villages are used. Potential mate pools for a sample of 268 females are enumerated by village. Age structure and the Jirel restriction against clan endogamy are found to severely limit the number of males who are potential mates for a given female. The mating structure of the population is illuminated by statistical analysis of the characteristics of 160 actual mate pairs and all corresponding potential mate pairs. Using this approach several general mate choice practices were verified: 1) biological kin tend to be avoided as mates, 2) members of the same clan are excluded as potential mates, 3) mate exchange between clans is nonrandom, 4) individuals similar in age tend to be selected as mates, and 5) mates are drawn from the natal village more often than random expectation. A multivariate phenotypic distance measure between individuals did not reveal any evidence for assortative mating for either anthropometric or dermatoglyphic characters.  相似文献

Mate-choice studies typically focus on male traits affecting female mating decisions, but few studies seek to identify the behavioral rules females use when searching for mates. Current models suggest that females may either directly compare a set of males ("pooled comparison") or compare each male to an internal standard ("sequential-search rule") when judging the suitability of potential mates. Models also differ in other specific aspects, such as the predicted number of sampling bouts initiated and the tendency of females to return to males after previous visits. We monitored 63 female satin bowerbirds, Ptilonorhynchus violaceus, during mate sampling to reconstruct their search patterns. We found that females typically sampled several males and returned to the most attractive male for mating: a behavior consistent with the pooled-comparison tactic. Females, however, varied in the number of males sampled; some visited only one male before mating. We found that this variation can be explained by differences among females in the number of mates, the date mate searching is initiated, and long-term experience with males. Further, females were observed to initiate two distinct sampling bouts, with the rejection of most of their potential mates occurring before the start of the second sampling bout. This suggests that the choices of potential mates are narrowed prior to the second sampling bout and that the later visits may function to reconsider preliminary decisions made during the first sampling bout or to resolve decisions concerning the remaining potential mates. Our results indicate that mate searching is a complex process in which females use multiple sampling bouts to find suitable mates and in which several different factors influence their search behavior.  相似文献

We recently developed a conditioned place preference (CPP) procedure, commonly used to study rewarding drug effects, to demonstrate that dominant sexually‐experienced CD‐1 male mice form CPP to contexts previously associated with defeating subordinate male C57BL/6J mice. Here we further characterized conditioned and unconditioned aggression behavior in CD‐1 mice. In Exp. 1 we used CD‐1 mice that displayed a variable spectrum of unconditioned aggressive behavior toward younger subordinate C57BL/6J intruder mice. We then trained the CD‐1 mice in the CPP procedure where one context was intruder‐paired, while a different context was not. We then tested for aggression CPP 1 day after training. In Exp. 2, we tested CD‐1 mice for aggression CPP 1 day and 18 days after training. In Exp. 3–4, we trained the CD‐1 mice to lever‐press for palatable food and tested them for footshock punishment‐induced suppression of food‐reinforced responding. In Exp. 5, we characterized unconditioned aggression in hybrid CD‐1 × C57BL/6J D1‐Cre or D2‐Cre F1 generation crosses. Persistent aggression CPP was observed in CD‐1 mice that either immediately attacked C57BL/6J mice during all screening sessions or mice that gradually developed aggressive behavior during the screening phase. In contrast, CD‐1 mice that did not attack the C57BL/6J mice during screening did not develop CPP to contexts previously paired with C57BL/6J mice. The aggressive phenotype did not predict resistance to punishment‐induced suppression of food‐reinforced responding. CD‐1 × D1‐Cre or D2‐Cre F1 transgenic mice showed strong unconditioned aggression. Our study demonstrates that aggression experience causes persistent CPP and introduces transgenic mice for circuit studies of aggression.  相似文献

多数鸟类通过性特征限制在同性竞争和配偶选择中的“欺骗者”存在,与此相反,雀形目扇尾莺科部分物种表现出繁殖季节性特征消退的身体特征变化模式.在广州市南沙区通过“目字笼”对黄腹山鹪莺配偶关系稳定性的限制机制进行研究,发现虽然雌性个体到访原配个体和对照个体的次数几乎相同,但是雌性个体对原配雄性的单次选择时间明显长于对照雄性个体,总计选择时间也明显长于对照雄性个体.选择实验过程中,原配雄性的跳动次数明显高于对照个体雄性,以竖尾扑哧和鸣声恐吓等为代表的威慑行为次数也明显高于对照雄性个体.结果说明,雌性更青睐于原配个体,配对时间越长,忠诚度越高,而且原配雄性比入侵雄性个体表现出更高的活跃度和威慑行为.繁殖季节性特征消退的物种可以通过保持稳定的配偶关系以限制“欺骗者”存在.可以推测繁殖的巨大投入和雌性之间的同性竞争可能是产生这种配偶稳定性的主要原因.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Incubation feeding, where males feed their mates, is a common behavior in birds and may improve female condition, nest attentiveness, and nesting success. We used behavioral observations and a temporary mate removal experiment to test the female nutrition hypothesis for incubation feeding by male Scarlet Tanagers (Piranga olivacea). All males (N= 20) were observed incubation feeding and fed females both at the nest (x? 1.36 trips/h) and away from the nest (x? 20.1 trips/h). Male feeding rate off‐nest was negatively correlated with the duration of female foraging bouts and positively correlated with the total time females spent incubating per hour. Eggs were predated at seven of 19 (37%) nests, but nest survival during incubation was not related to either female incubation behavior or male feeding rate. During temporary removal experiments (N= 12), female Scarlet Tanagers remained on the nest significantly longer and did not have longer foraging bouts. An unexpected outcome of the removal experiments was a dramatic change in female vocal behavior. All 12 experimental females gave chik‐burr calls during the male‐removal experiments (x? bout length = 11.7 min), but during normal observation periods only six of 20 females at the incubation stage gave chik‐burr calls (x? bout length = 0.7 min, N= 20). Our results suggest that female tanagers likely gain nutritional benefits from incubation feeding, but male feeding may not improve immediate reproductive success. Nine of 54 (17%) nestlings in five of 17 broods (29%) were extra‐pair young (EPY), indicating that males could potentially benefit from incubation feeding via mate retention and fidelity as well as, or instead of, through immediate gains in reproductive success. Our study indicates that females benefit from incubation feeding and do not simply passively accept food from their mates, but instead may influence male feeding rates through direct (e.g., mate following and vocalizing) and indirect (the threat of mate abandonment or cuckoldry) means.  相似文献

The scent of a novel male can elicit pregnancy block in recently mated female mice (Mus musculus), a phenomenon known as the Bruce effect. Despite abundant literature on the Bruce effect in rodents, it remains unclear whether males related to a female’s original mate can induce the Bruce effect in out-bred, communally living mice. We investigated this question using Kunming (KM) male mice of varying genetic relatedness. Recently mated females were subjected to three treatments: exposure to the urine of the mate, urine of the mate’s male littermate, and urine of a male unrelated to the mate. It was found that the urine of male littermates of the females’ mates did not elicit more pregnancy block than that of the females’ mates. However, the urine of novel males caused a higher rate of female miscarriage than that of the females’ mates. By using a habituation-dishabituation paradigm, we found that unmated females could discriminate the urine scents of two male littermates from those of a novel male unrelated to the littermates. To understand how females use urinary cues to discriminate between males with different genetic relationships, we used gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to examine the volatile composition of urine from males with varying relatedness. It was found that KM male littermates shared similar volatile compositions in their urine. Our results suggest that male kinship reduces the Bruce effect in female KM mice, and provide additional evidence for mate choice being partly mediated by the Bruce effect in KM mice.  相似文献

Researchers studying human sexuality have repeatedly concluded that men place more emphasis on the physical attractiveness of potential mates than women do, particularly in long-term sexual relationships. Evolutionary theorists have suggested that this is the case because male mate value (the total value of the characteristics that an individual possesses in terms of the potential contribution to his or her mate’s reproductive success) is better predicted by social status and economic resources, whereas women’s mate value hinges on signals conveyed by their physical appearance. This pattern may imply that women trade off attractiveness for resources in mate choice. Here I test whether a trade-off between resources and attractiveness seems to be occurring in the mate choice decisions of women in the United States. In addition, the possibility that the risk of mate desertion drives women to choose less attractive men as long-term mates is tested. The results were that women rated physically attractive men as more likely to cheat or desert a long-term relationship, whereas men did not consider attractive women to be more likely to cheat. However, women showed no aversion to the idea of forming long-term relationships with attractive men. Evidence for a trade-off between resources and attractiveness was found for women, who traded off attractiveness, but not other traits, for resources. The potential meaning of these findings, as well as how they relate to broader issues in the study of sex differences in the evolution of human mate choice for physical traits, is discussed.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that endogenous digitalis-like factor (DLF) is involved in the development of alcohol dependence in rats. In 33 male Wistar rats in conditioned place preference (CPP) experiment, ethanol evoked increase in time spent in the ethanol-associated compartment (702+/-82 in ethanol-treated vs. 426+/-86 sec in the controls). Digoxin pretreatment (125 microg/kg, i/p) did not affect the time spent in the water-associated compartment (476+/-80 sec), but prevented the acquisition of ethanol CPP (385+/-112 sec in ethanol-paired side, P<0.05). In a two bottle choice test, where rats (n=6 per group) chose between drinking water and 9% ethanol, immunization against two putative DLFs, marinobufagenin and ouabain (MBG and OLC) resulted in a 60% increase of ethanol consumption. Acute intragastric administration of 9% ethanol to the rats was associated with increased OLC in cerebrospinal fluid, and stimulated urinary excretion of MBG and OLC. Thus, in rats, digoxin, which mimics the effects of DLFs, suppresses the free choice of alcohol, while immunization against DLFs is associated with alcohol seeking behavior.  相似文献
