The biomass of Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. was estimated at selected sites in the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona, and River Kilometer 354. C. glomerata biomass was significantly higher at sites above Lees Ferry (25 km downstream from the Dam) than sites below the Ferry. Biomass and chlorophyll a were significantly reduced when C. glomerata was subjected to one-time exposures to the atmosphere for 12 daylight h in more. Repeated 12/12 h and 24/24 h (exposure/submergence) cycles over a two-week period also showed a significant reduction in biomass. The adaptations of C. glomerata to “stranding” during regulated flows are discussed.  相似文献

The longitudinal distribution and seasonal fluctuation of phytoplankton communities was studied along the middle to lower part of a regulated river system (Nakdong River, Korea). Phytoplankton biomass decreased sharply in the middle part of the river (182 km upward the estuary dam), and then increased downstream reaching a maximum at the last sampling station (27 km upward the estuary dam). In contrast, there was little downstream fluctuation in species composition, irrespective of pronounced differences in nutrient concentrations (TN, TP, NO3, NH4, PO4) as well as in algal biomass. In the main river channel, small centric diatoms (Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella meneghiniana) and pennate diatoms (Synedra, Fragilaria, Nitzschia) were dominant from winter to early spring (November–April). A mixed community of cryptomonads, centric and pennate diatoms, and coenobial greens (Pediastrum, Scenedesmus) was dominant in late spring (May–June). Blue-green algae (Anabaena, Microcystis, Oscillatoria) were dominant in the summer (July–September). A mid-summer Microcystis bloom occurred at all study sites during the dry season, when discharge was low, though the nutrient concentration varied in each study site. Nutrients appeared everywhere to be in excess of algal requirement and apparently did not influence markedly the downstream and seasonal phytoplankton compositional differences in this river.  相似文献

We compared processing rates (k d) for leaves of the native willow (Salix exigua Nutt.) and cottonwood (Populus fremontii Wats.) to those of the non-native salt cedar (Tamarix chinensis Lour.) in the regulated Colorado River, U.S.A. Leaf packs of each species were incubated at Lees Ferry, approximately 26 km below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Leaf packs were processed at 2, 21, 46, 84 and 142-d intervals. Water temperatures remained relatively constant (10 °C, SE ± 1 °C) during the study. There were significant differences in processing rates between species, with P. fremontii showing the fastest breakdown. After 142 d, only 20% of the P. fremontii leaf mass remained, whereas 30% and 52% of leaf masses remained for T. chinensis and S. exigua, respectively. The k d value for P. fremontii was 0.0062 compared to 0.0049 and 0.0038 for T. chinensis and S. exigua, respectively. Invertebrate colonization was not significantly different between native and non-native plant species with oligochaetes the most abundant animal colonizing the leaf packs. Dual stable isotope analysis showed that leaf material was not the primary food for invertebrates associated with leaf packs. Processing rates for all leaf types were slow in the regulated Colorado River compared to rates reported in many other systems. This is likely due to the lack of caddisfly and stonefly shredders and perhaps slow metabolic rates by microbes.  相似文献

1. Larvae of the sedentary aquatic caterpillar Petrophila confusalis (Walker) construct silken retreats around which they feed; outside these clearly demarcated grazed areas, stream algae are exposed to a variety of mobile grazers. Comparisons of the algal community inside and just outside grazed zones were made for third- and fifth-instar Petrophila in the South Fork of the Eel River, California. 2. Densities of both the filamentous macroalga Cladophora and diatom assemblages were significantly reduced within the grazed areas during both larval instars. Grazing of diatoms was taxonomically non-selective. 3. In spring, the grazed zones were relatively large (mean = 22.7 cm2) and visibly increased epilithic spatial patchiness. 4. Per cent composition of diatom assemblages inside and outside the grazed areas differed during the third instar but not during the fifth instar. During the third instar, the grazed zone contained more Synedra ulna (a common immigrant) and less Gomphonema olivaceum (a late-successional species).  相似文献

Phytoplankton distribution and abundance in eleven tributaries of the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon were investigated from April, 1975 to June, 1976. During this period a total of 56 genera and 156 species of phytoplankton was identified. Phytoplankton species of the individual tributaries were quite distinct, with only four diatom species, Diatoma vulgare, Navicula tripunctata, Nitzschia linearis and Synedra ulna, common to all the tributaries. Bright Angel Creek, Shinumo Creek and Elves Chasm were the tributaries with the most diverse algal flora, whereas Vaseys Paradise, Tapeats Creek, Deer Creek and Havasu Creek showed the lowest species richness. Elves Chasm and Diamond Creek had the highest phytoplankton numbers. Phytoplankton abundance and species richness appeared to be influenced by high turbidity, current velocity, fluctuating water levels and age of the water. Some of the dominant algal species, Biddulphia laevis, Cocconeis pediculus, Cymbella ventricosa, Epithemia sorex, Gomphonema parvulum and Synedra ulna, showed significant correlations with specific physico-chemical characteristics of the tributaries.Grand Canyon National Park Colorado River Research Series Contribution No. 66. This study assessed changes in biomass, filament length, and cell morphology in Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. along a suspended sediment gradient in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Suspended sediments ranged from 2.0 mg·L−1 at Lees Ferry (Rkm 0.8) to 4.2 mg·L−1 at Gorilla Island (Rkm 352). There was a 74% decrease in Cladophora biomass along the river transect through Grand Canyon National Park and a significant decrease in filament and cell length, but cell width increased. Similar changes in cell morphology occurred after 19 days when C. glomerata was transplanted from a low suspended sediment site (2.0 mg·L−1) at Lees Ferry to a habitat with high suspended sediments (≥20.0 mg·L−1). Cell length increased and cell width decreased when plants were transplanted back to the low suspended sediment habitat for 24 days. In situ studies with reduced light in the absence of suspended sediments showed no change in cell morphology. These in situ experiments imply that changes in cell morphology by C. glomerata in waters with high suspended sediments are adjustments in structural integrity to accommodate the abrasive force of suspended particles. Our study suggests that cell dimensions in Cladophora might be too plastic under varying environmental conditions to be used in taxonomic determinations.  相似文献

The algal flora of the Truckee River below Reno, Washoe County, Nevada was examined during the summer and fall months of 1986. This reach of the lower Truckee River exhibited a substantial gradient in dissolved inorganic nitrogen associated with sources which included treated wastewater from the Reno metropolitan area. The algal communities were similar to those of other river systems of the Great Basin. Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta formed encrusting mats on the substrate, with the nitrogen fixer Calothrix atricha relatively abundant upstream from the nitrogen source. Diatoms were abundant within and upon this mat. A total of 139 diatom taxa and 11 taxa other than diatoms was identified from this flora. Several of the diatom taxa, including Achnanthes minutissima, Diatoma vulgare, Nitzschia dissipata, and Nitzschia palea, demonstrated distinct downriver patterns in relative abundance.  相似文献

Summary 1. During the low-flow period (April–October) in sunlit pools of Big Sulphur Creek (northern coastal California), the attached algal community predictably changes from an assemblage dominated by lush, upright Cladophora glomerata filaments in spring and early summer to one dominated by epilithic diatoms and blue-green algae (together=microalgae) in late summer through early autumn. Previous studies in this stream indicated that grazing by the caddisflies Helicopsyche borealis and Gumaga nigricula maintain low algal biomass during the latter part of this period. We used a combination of in situ exclusion/enclosure experiments to examine (1) the separate and combined effects of these grazers on Cladophora and microalgal assemblages, and (2) food preferences, growth, and microdistribution patterns of grazers when offered these different algal foods. 2. Grazers exerted strong but divergent effects on algal assemblages. Selective grazing on Cladophora by G. nigricula greatly accelerated the transition from upright Cladophora to epilithic microalgae, whereas selective grazing on microalgae by H. borealis dramatically reduced biomass of these forms. Grazers were largely ineffective at reducing the non-preferred algal food source (i.e. Cladophora by H. borealis, microalgae by G. nigricula). In the case of each grazer, growth was highest on the preferred algal food. Together, the activity of these grazers produced a low-biomass assemblage dominated by microalgal cells. 3. Removal of the Cladophora overstory by G. nigricula resulted in a three-fold increase in the abundance of epilithic microalgae, the preferred food of H. borealis. Elimination of Cladophora by G. nigricula can increase food availability for H. borealis and, in so doing, can indirectly facilitate the growth of this grazer during food-limited conditions. However, microdistribution of G. nigricula shifts from high overlap with H. borealis in spring and early summer when Cladophora is abundant to low overlap in late summer after Cladophora has been eliminated. This may indicate intense competition between these species for limited epilithic algae, and a concomitant movement by G. nigricula to areas in the stream where food resources are more available.  相似文献

The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent areas. Small temperature increases which occured as effluent and river waters mixed farther downstream were apparently not as important to the algal flora as other environmental factors.  相似文献

Grazing effects of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis Temminck et Schegel, on the benthic algal assemblages were investigated in the Chikuma River, Japan. Comparison of the algal composition on boulders with and without intensively grazed patches indicated that fish grazing decreased the abundance of diatoms and prostrate filamentous cyanobacteria and caused upright filamentous cyanobacteria to predominate. Differential consumption by ayu was estimated by comparing the relative abundance of algae in the stomach contents of ayu and that in the algal assemblages within the grazed patches. The results showed that ayu consumed the prostrate filamentous cyanobacteria proportionally to their abundance, whereas they ingested diatoms and the upright filamentous cyanobacteria in a larger and lower quantity, respectively, than that expected from their abundance. Differential consumption would involve the change in the algal composition toward the predominance of upright filamentous cyanobacteria under fish grazing conditions.  相似文献

A study was carried out in 1992 on the Val Joly reservoir and the rivers situated downstream: the River Helpe Majeure and the canalized Sambre into which it flows 40 km below the reservoir. Each year, blooms of blue-green algae occur in the reservoir. They are dominated by species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs in 1991 or Pseudanabaena tenuis Koppe and Oscillatoria pseudogeminata G. Schmid in 1992. A typical fluvial composition of the phytoplankton was mostly restored above the confluence with the Sambre. Nevertheless, significant quantities of Oscillatoria and Pseudanabaena have been observed in the River Sambre, just below its confluence with the Helpe Majeure. The environmental conditions in the River Sambre do not allow Aphanizomenon to develop, but could favour Oscillatoria blooms.  相似文献

Regulated rivers are novel ecosystems with altered temperature and flow regimes that can be used to test distribution patterns of microscopic organisms, such as diatoms. Our objective was to describe the spatial and seasonal patterns of diatoms in a cold-water, oligotrophic river within a region of warm-water, mesotrophic rivers. The Lower Mountain Fork, in south-east Oklahoma (USA), is maintained as a year-around, stocked fishery by the release of cold, hypolimnetic water from Broken Bow Lake and is the southern-most known site of Didymosphenia geminata in North America. Epilithic diatoms were sampled six times at nine sites over a distance of 15.5 km and, within this area, 27 times at the site of the main Didymosphenia bloom. Percentage composition data were analysed for assemblage composition using multivariate analysis, nutrient specificity using a diatom-based metric, and species associations using similarity profiles. Eighty-eight taxa were found, of which 10 were unidentifiable and included local undescribed species and species clusters. Three species [Gomphonema (parvulum morph), Achnanthidium rivulare and Achnanthidium minutissimum] comprised over 60% of the diatom abundance at all sites, and downstream and seasonal patterns were evident for both these and less abundant taxa. Notably, diatom assemblages in the three sites below the dam were similar to that at the lowermost site, below a much smaller dam. The oligotraphentic diatom assemblage reflected the water chemistry of the river. The Didymosphenia bloom had been scoured by a large spate prior to the study and the species was present at two of the nine sites in low numbers but failed to bloom during the study, possibly because of a trend towards increasing phosphorus concentrations in the reservoir (Didymosphenia blooms under low P concentrations). No other species shared Didymosphenia’s distribution pattern over the study reach, highlighting the novelty of Didymosphenia’s presence in the river.  相似文献

Summary In conclusion, the present study reveals that the algal flora and particularly the diatoms are richly developed in the type of habitat hitherto investigated under conditions broadly stated in the introduction. This observation is supported by the fact that as many as 101 diatoms representing 20 of the commonly available fresh water genera, are recorded in two small samples from such a small body of water, besides several unicellular, colonial and filamentous forms of algae.Of the diatom content noted here, analysis shows that a large bulk of them was fairly represented and the genera Nitschia and Navicula appeared prominent. Further, 6 diatoms which make here new records for India, extend their further range of geographical distribution and three new species are added to science. Disturbances such as floods and droughts play a central role in determining the structure of riverine benthic biological assemblages. Extreme disturbances from flash floods are often restricted to part of the river network and the magnitude of the flood disturbance may lessen as floods propagate downstream. The present study aimed to characterize the impact of summer monsoonal floods on the resistance and resilience of the benthic diatom assemblage structure in nine river reaches of increasing drainage size within the Gila River in the southwestern United States. Monsoonal floods had a profound effect on the diatom assemblage in the Gila River, but the effects were not related to drainage size except for the response of algal biomass. During monsoons, algal biomass was effectively reduced in smaller and larger systems, but minor changes were observed in medium systems. Resistance and resilience of the diatom assemblage to floods were related to specific species traits, mainly to growth forms. Tightly adhered, adnate and prostrate species (Achnanthidium spp., Cocconeis spp.) exhibited high resistance to repeated scour disturbance. Loosely attached diatoms, such as Nitzschia spp. and Navicula spp., were most susceptible to drift and scour. However, recovery of the diatom assemblage was very quick indicating a high resilience, especially in terms of biomass and diversity. Regional hydroclimatic models predict greater precipitation variability, which will select for diatoms resilient to bed‐mobilizing disturbances. The results of this study may help anticipate future benthic diatom assemblage patterns in the southwestern United States resulting from a more variable climate.  相似文献

为全面了解着生藻类在建群中群落变化的生态学特性,揭示着生藻类的建群规律,在以丝状藻类为优势藻的生态塘中,采用花岗岩和瓷砖为附着材料,设置水体底部和中部为附着位点,进行频次为10d的采样分析。结果表明,生态塘中共检出8门73属117种着生藻类,其中以硅藻、蓝藻、绿藻为优势类群。同时不同人工基质和不同空间层次条件下着生藻类的建群特征较一致,早期以单细胞硅藻如舟形藻(Navicula sp.)、脆杆藻(Fragilaria sp.)、曲壳藻(Achnanthes sp.)等为优势,后期以丝状藻类如鞘丝藻(Lyngbya sp.)、颤藻(Oscillatoria sp.)、伪鱼腥藻(Pseudanabaena sp.)等为优势;研究结果发现不同人工基质(花岗岩和瓷砖)对着生藻类的种类组成、细胞密度、生物量和藻类多样性无显著影响,花岗岩和瓷砖上附着的着生藻类具有较高的相似性;但不同的空间层次对着生藻类建群特征影响明显,水体底部具有更多的硅藻种类数,中部具有更多的绿藻,随着建群时间的发展,蓝藻比例不断增加;就生物量而言,底部的着生藻类叶绿素a显著高于水体中部,但两者的细胞密度无显著性差异;随着建群过程的发展,水体底部的着生藻类生物量达峰值所需的时间比中部更长。通过相关性分析,生态塘中着生藻类的生长主要受总磷的影响。  相似文献

We examined diet and diel energy intake of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, of different lengths captured by electrofishing between 1991 and 1997 in the Lee's Ferry tailwater, Colorado River, below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Trout diets reflected a depauperate food base and indicated limited potential of different fish size-groups to partition food resources. As evidenced by relative stomach volumes of ingested matter, mid-sized and large trout tended to consume more algae than did small fish, suggesting that they consumed diets of lower nutritional quality. An energy intake model indicated that median consumers among mid-sized and large fish generally failed annually to surpass estimated maintenance energy requirements and that median consumers among mid-sized trout failed to meet or exceed maintenance requirements during all seasons. In contrast, median consumers among small trout met or surpassed maintenance energy requirements during most years and in summer. Results support a hypothesis that larger rainbow trout in lotic systems are food-limited more often than smaller fish.  相似文献

Water quality and algal populations in the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir have been monitored extensively for many decades, because of its importance as a water source for the most densely populated area in South Africa. Although Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen is frequently found and at it times dominates algal assemblages in the Barrage, Aulacoseira ambigua (F.Meister) Tuji & D.M.Williams has never before been recorded at this locality. During a countrywide proficiency-testing scheme for algae counting, coordinated by Rand Water, spiral-shaped diatom colonies with distinctly curved cells were detected during May 2015. Upon investigation, it was found that the spiral colonies were Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica, its presence in the fresh waters of South Africa being recorded for the first time. Since their first appearance during May 2015, colonies of Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica have been constantly present in the surface waters of the Barrage. Their presence at this site can be linked to increasing eutrophication in the Vaal River, because the spiral form is known to prefer eutrophic conditions. Centric diatoms rarely form spiral colonies and there is some confusion in the literature as to the identity of this particular form, therefore in this paper we discuss this taxon, its nomenclature and ecological significance.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the periphyton on the trunks of flooded trees in the Pawmpawm arm of the Volta Lake are reported. Of the three algal groups forming the periphyton, the quantitatively most important species are in such genera as Navicula, Synedra and Melosira (diatoms), Spirogyra, Oedogonium and Stigeoclonium (green algae), and Oscillatoria and Anabaena (blue-green algae). The fluctuations in species diversity and cell numbers are attributed to changes in the nutrient status of the lake water and lake level.  相似文献
