Summary The structure and development of the elaborate scale case ofMallomonas adamas (Synurophyceae) was studied throughout the cell cycle. Immediately following division, scale cases normally possess 30 siliceous scales, or 5 rows of 6 scales each. Scale rows overlap one another and spiral around the cell in a clockwise direction when viewed from either end of the cell. Throughout interphase, a duplicate set of 30 scales is manufactured and secreted into the existing scale case in a precise sequence, resulting in a scale case with 60 scales, or 5 rows of 12 scales each. Scales are not added to the scale case in rows, but individually positioned within the cytoplasm and inserted one at a time over the entire surface of the cell. Scales appear to occupy specific positions in the scale case. Scale cases are dynamic cell coverings, their elaborate patterning being maintained throughout cell growth and during division when half the parental scales are inherited by each daughter cell. 相似文献

The elaborate scale case of Mallomonas splendens (Synurophyceae) consists of an overlapping arrangement of siliceous scales. In addition, siliceous bristles are attached to specialized base plate scales located at both the anterior and posterior ends of the cells. We have generated monoclonal antibodies against molecules associated with the scale case of M. splendens. One of these antibodies, designated MsS.H9, labelled a proteinaceous epitope of high-molecular-mass cell surface glycoproteins. Immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated that only two regions of M. splendens scale cases were labelled by MsS.H9, namely, the upper surface of the scales that contact neighboring scales and the bases of the bristles. Immunoelectron microscopy using thin sections of M. splendens cells showed these labelling sites corresponded to the amorphous material at the sites of scale-to-scale overlap and to a fibrillar complex located at scale-to-bristle attachment sites. Scales and bristles of M. splendens are formed within the cell, in silica deposition vesicles. Immunolabelling of cell sections containing developing scales and bristles showed that MsS.H9 labelling sites were present very early in the formation of these cell surface components. MsS.H9 labelling was also found associated with developing flagellar hairs whereas no labelling was detected on these structures after their deployment onto the flagellum. The location of MsS.H9 labelling sites strongly suggests that the molecule(s) recognized by the antibody plays a role in the adhesion of the individual components making up the scale case of M. splendens.Abbreviations CER

Silica-scaled chrysophytes are a special group in the phytoplankton of rivers and shallow lakes. They are present the whole year at low density, but sometimes — mainly during autumn and spring — some species can become frequent and very numerous to form real water blooms. In this study, seven species of silica-scaled chrysophytes have been recorded and identified by electron microscopy of phytoplankton samples from some rivers and shallow lakes in Hungary. Most of these silica-scaled chrysophytes have previously been found in eutrophic and hypertrophic localities, and almost all of them are common and widely distributed, even cosmopolitan. Only Synura echinulata Korshikov has not previously been recorded from Hungary. Some of them as Synura curtispina (Petersen & Hansen) Asmund, S. petersenii Korshikov, Mallomonas acaroides Perty emend. Ivanov, M. tonsurata Teiling were frequently found in the phytoplankton samples. Sometimes in autumn and winter Synura petersenii was the most abundant species in the phytoplankton and formed blooms. 相似文献

A short flagellum bearing unusual appendages inMallomonas guttata is described. These appendages, ca. 0.2 μm in diameter and 10–20 μm long, 7–10 in number, originate from the distal end of
the short flagellum. Their membrane is continuous with the flagellar membrane and no particular structure was observed in
appendage lumen. 相似文献

Although several species of the Synurophyceae have been associated with taste and odor problems in potable water supplies, electron microscopic-based field studies linked problematic blooms only toSynura petersenii Korshikov. Eventually, the organic compoundtrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal was implicated to cause the associated cucumberlike odors. The objective of this study was to survey unialgal cultures of various Synurophycean species for the occurrence oftrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal. The compound was detected throughout a 24-day growth assay with aS. petersenii isolate, but was not detected in an identical assay withSynura sphagnicola (Korshikov) Korshikov. In separate 24-day cultures,trans-2,cis-6-nonadienal was detected in two isolates from theS. petersenii species complex, but was not detected in isolates of twoMallomonas or fourSynura taxa not from theS. petersenii complex. These results support the hypothesis that production oftrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal is unique to taxa within theS. petersenii complex. When contrast-enhancing optics and specific specimen preparation techniques are employed, light microscopy can be used to distinguish taxa in theS. petersenii complex from all other Synurophycean taxa. These methods are suggested as an efficient way to monitortrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal-producing taxa in potable water supplies.Author for correspondence 相似文献

A new species of Mallomonas, M. wujekii sp. nov., belonging to the Series Tonsuratae is described from a dilute, acidic locality in Florida, U.S.A. Bristle bearing domed scales are restricted to the anterior end, and scales are orientated with their longitudinal axes at a 60° to 90° angle with the longitudinal axis of the cell. Cells have three types of scales, domed anterior scales, domeless body scales and spined posterior scales. All scales possess papillae that are restricted to the shield and have one rib positioned on each end of the posterior flange. The new species is believed to be most closely related to Mallomonas tonsurata and M. galeiformis . The combination of characters of the bristles is unique among taxa of Mallomonas . 相似文献

As part of an on-going effort to conserve endangered and endemicScrophularia takesimensis (Scrophulariaceae), we analyzed its spatial distribution patterns by applying an index of dispersion, plant-to-all-plant
distances, and the varying quadrat size method. Three indices — Dispersion, Morisita, and Standardized Morisita — all revealed
clumping with small aggregates, and distances between aggregates were more or less regular. The asymptote level occurred at
a distance of 20 to 30 m; the distance showing 90% of cumulative frequency coincided with 20 to 21 m; 95%, 24 to 25 m; and
99%, 31 to 32 m. The 20 m× 20 m and 40 m×40 m quadrats contained 25 and 40 plants, respectively. We conclude that this number
of individuals and size of area are the minimum required for the conservation of this species. 相似文献

Chrysophyte (mallomonadacean) scales were examined from the surface sediments of 18 lakes from eastern Finland, representing a wide range of limnological characteristics. Scales were always well preserved and 23 taxa were observed. The relative frequencies of the dominant taxa were plotted relative to the average autumn lakewater pH. The distribution of chrysophyte species in the calibration set was ordinated by means of DECORANA analysis. The occurrence of these species appeared to be closely related to pH, colour and nutrients in the ordinated lake groups. Chrysophyte scales are potentially useful environmental and paleolimnological indicators in eastern Finland. 相似文献

Onychoteuthid squids are among the most common cephalopods found in New Zealand waters, and comprise a major portion of the regional diets of teuthophagous marine mammals. Although several recent publications have addressed aspects of various species’ biology and reproduction, the systematics of the group remains poorly understood. Herein the ontogenetic and adult morphologies of regionally occurring known species of the genera Moroteuthis, Onychoteuthis, and Notonykia are redescribed, and Notonykia nesisi sp. nov. is described for the first time. Ontogenetic and sexually dimorphic variation in characters and character states associated with body proportions, and beak, radula, tentacular hook, palatine tooth and gladius morphologies are also described and compared between local onychoteuthid taxa for the first time. 相似文献

This work is a continuation of electrophoretic investigations aimed at revealing a wild relative ofVicia faba. Electrophoretic analysis (PAGE) of seed albumins covered 52 accessions representing eightVicia species of sect.Hypechusa and two species of sect.Peregrinae. Most of the examined species showed an intraspecific variation due to differences between accessions and/or individual variation within accessions. In spite of the intraspecific variation, marked interspecific differences were recorded. However, none of the investigated species displayed electrophoretic seed albumin patterns similar to those reported earlier forV. faba. Contribution of the obtained results to characterization of the examined taxa is discussed. 相似文献
