Responses of single reticular units to electrodermal stimulation were studied in unanesthetized, immobilized rats during cold blocking of the cortical representation of the stimulated limbs. Local cooling of the somatosensory cortex caused reversible and opposite changes in responses of 60 of the 86 neurons tested. In 25 cells responses only to stimulation of the limb whose sensory projection was in the cooled zone were modified. In 31 neurons changes in responses to this stimulation predominated and in 22 they were comparable with changes in responses of the same neurons to electrodermal stimulation of the other limb, whose cortical representation was intact. Cold blocking of the cortical response to presentation of one of the stimuli thus modifies the conditions for information processing in the neuron net of the reticular formation selectively for the response to presentation of that same stimulus.I. Unit activity was recorded from two parietal areas of the cat neocortex in semichronic experiments. Cell responses to presentation of adequate stimuli of different modalities and to direct electrical stimulation of various cortical zones were studied. About 4% of neurons of the Clare-Bishop area did not respond to visual stimulation. Cells responding to stimuli of different modalities were found in the Clare-Bishop area. A high percentage of cells in this area responded to direct electrical stimulation of area 17. In the association area (area 7) 27% of neurons tested responded to visual stimuli, but only a very small relative number of cells (compared with responding neurons of the Clare-Bishop area) responded to stimulation of the primary sensory areas. Electrical stimulation of area 7 inhibited evoked and spontaneous unit activity in the Clare-Bishop area. The hypothesis that these areas are the association representation of two different sections of the visual system — retino-geniculocortical and retino-tecto-thalamocortical — is discussed.Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. Responses of 251 neurons in the anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus to stimulation of primary sensory (auditory, visual, somatosensory) areas and also to acoustic, visual, and somatosensory stimuli were studied in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Three groups of neurons were distinguished by their responses to stimulation of the primary sensory areas: those responding by an increased firing rate (117) or by inhibition (35) and those not responding (99). Responses of 193 neurons to stimulation of the peripheral afferent systems were analyzed. Neurons of the parietal associative cortex responded more frequently to cortical stimulation than to peripheral. By the duration of the latent period of their response to cortical stimulation the neurons were divided into three groups: those with short (less than 20 msec), medium (20–30 msec), and long latent periods (over 30 msec). The first group was the largest.Kemerovo State Medical Institute. Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 4, No. 5, pp. 524–530, September–October, 1972.  相似文献

Unit responses in the second somatosensory cortical projection area (SII) to clicks and electric shocks applied to the contralateral limb were investigated in chronic experiments on cats. In response to specific stimulation for the cortical region studied the discharge frequency of 75% of neurons increased, spontaneous activity of 18% was reduced in frequency or the discharges ceased altogether, and 25% of cells did not respond. In response to "nonspecific" stimulation (clicks) 30% of neurons were activated; the discharge of 25% of cells was inhibited and 45% did not respond. The results of investigation of intersensory convergence of stimuli from different sensory systems showed that a high proportion (55%) of SII neurons give bimodal responses. Another 18% of neurons give a specific response to both adequate and inadequate stimulation. It is suggested that the presence of polysensory convergence of SII neurons and of short pathways for the conduction of sensory information, and also the ability of neurons to acquire polysensory properties during stimulus presentation are evidence of the important role of this cortical region in conditioning.A. The latent periods, amplitude, and duration of IPSPs arising in neurons in different parts of the cat cortex in response to afferent stimuli, stimulation of thalamocortical fibers, and intracortical microstimulation are described. The duration of IPSPs evoked in cortical neurons in response to single afferent stimuli varied from 20 to 250 msec (most common frequency 30–60 msec). During intracortical microstimulation of the auditory cortex, IPSPs with a duration of 5–10 msec also appeared. Barbiturates and chloralose increased the duration of the IPSPs to 300–500 msec. The latent period of 73% of IPSPs arising in auditory cortical neurons in response to stimulation of thalamocortical fibers was 1.2 msec longer than the latent period of monosynaptic EPSPs evoked in the same way. It is concluded from these data that inhibition arising in most neurons of cortical projection areas as a result of the arrival of corresponding afferent impulsation is direct afferent inhibition involving the participation of cortical inhibitory interneurons. A mechanism of recurrent inhibition takes part in the development of inhibition in a certain proportion of neurons. IPSPs arise monosynaptically in 2% of cells. A study of responses of cortical neurons to intracortical microstimulation showed that synaptic delay of IPSPs in these cells is 0.3–0.4 msec. The length of axons of inhibitory neurons in layer IV of the auditory cortex reaches 1.5 mm. The velocity of spread of excitation along these axons is 1.6–2.8 msec (mean 2.2 msec).A. A. Extracellular responses of 151 spontaneously active neurons in a small area of the cortex of the posterior suprasylvian gyrus to flashes, clicks, and electrodermal stimulation were studied in unanesthetized cats immobilized with D-tubocurarine. Altogether 63% of neurons responded to the stimuli, of which flashes were the most effective. The proportions of polybi-, and monosensory responding neurons were 60, 18, and 22% respectively. Responding neurons were found throughout the thickness of the cortex, but most frequently at depths of 1000–2000 µ from the brain surface. The latent periods varied not only for different cells (from 20 to 90 msec to all stimuli), but also for the same cell. Responses were unstable, prolonged (over 1 sec) and complex in their dynamic pattern (several phases of increase and decrease in frequency of spontaneous discharges or merely a prolonged increase or decrease in its frequency). In the character of their responses the neurons were divided into 4 groups: 1) poly- and bisensory with equivalent responses to all stimuli; 2) poly- and bi-sensory with nonequivalent responses; 3) monosensory, and 4) nonresponding. The results show that this area of the posterior suprasylvian gyrus is part of the associative cortex with projection predominantly of the visual receptor.A. A. During acute experiments on awake cats the response of 98 neurons belonging to the head and tail of the caudate nucleus to direct electrical stimulation of the optic tract and presentation of photic stimuli was investigated using extracellular recording techniques. Of the test neurons 34.6% responded to stimulation of the optic tract and 36.2% to optic stimulation. Long latency (over 40 msec for the optic tract and over 80 msec for visual stimulation) excitatory responses prevailed in both cases. A small number of cells responded to optic tract stimulation with short latencies of 5–14 msec. Both types of stimulation were presented during investigations of 58 units of which eight were found to respond to both stimuli. The latter varied in their reaction to different stimuli and their response pattern. Findings are discussed in relation to the possible pathways by which visual information reaches the cortical structure under study.A. A. Unit responses in the anterior zone of the suprasylvian gyrus to visual, electrodermal, and acoustic stimulation were investigated in experiments on unanesthetized cats immobilized with tubocurarine. Electrical activity was recorded from 131 units, 121 of which were spontaneously active. In 65.5% of cells responses consisted of a short or long increase or a decrease in intensity of spike activity. Most cells (58.2%) were monosensory. Responses to visual stimulation were given by 72% of neurons, to electrodermal by 61.6%, and to acoustic by 9.3%. The corresponding latent periods were 20–40, 20–30, and 15–20 msec. Responses of the same neurons to different peripheral stimuli were uniform or they differed in their dynamics. Intracellular recording gave responses in the form of EPSPs (amplitude 4–5 mV, duration 60–80 msec) or, rarely, IPSPs (amplitude 2–3 mV, duration 160–200 msec). The functional organization of the associative cortex and mechanisms of analysis of incoming afferent information are discussed.A. A. It was shown by the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase that the posterolateral thalamic nucleus (NPL) in rats receives considerable ascending projections from the superior colliculus (SC), the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate body (LGB), and the pretectal region (PT) and smaller projections from n. ventralis posterior (VP) and n. ventralis lateralis (VL) of the thalamus, the ventral part of LGB, the zona incerta, and anterior hypothalamus. The most marked descending projections run into NPL from area 18A of the cortex and the dentate fascia of the hippocampus, whereas inputs from cortical areas 18, 20, 7, 29c, 17, and 36 are less marked. In electrophysiological experiments with peripheral stimulation of visual, auditory, and somatosensory systems, polysensory convergence and interaction between signals from these systems were studied during isolated and simultaneous presentation of heterosensory stimuli. Of 229 neurons tested, 134 (58.5%) responded to at least one of the stimuli mentioned. Among monomodal neurons (53 of 134) there were some cells which responded to visual (77.4%) and somatic (22.6%) stimulation; neurons which responded only to acoustic stimulation were not found in the nucleus. As far as polymodal neurons (81 of 134) responding to two or three sensory stimuli are concerned, the most effective inputs of these units were visual and somatosensory. Interaction between stimuli acting on polymodal neurons was expressed as mutual inhibition or facilitation of responses; opposite effects could be observed on the various components of these responses.I. Responses of 200 primary auditory cortical neurons to electrical stimulation of nerve fibers in different receptor zones of the cochlea were studied in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. Under the influence of paired stimulation, after the response to the conditioning stimulus a state of prolonged (from 4 to 200 msec) refractiveness to the second stimulus developed in all the neurons tested. This long-lasting inhibition of unit activity was due to inhibition developing in the thalamus and the auditory cortex itself. The intensity and duration of excitation and inhibition in the cortical projection focus were maximal when the center of the receptive field was stimulated and decreased when the stimulus shifted from the center to the periphery. The region of the receptor surface of the cochlea to stimulation of which the auditory cortical neurons respond by an action potential is much narrower than the region whose electrical stimulation depresses the discharge of these neurons.A. Interaction between responses to acoustic clicks and to electrodermal stimulation of the contralateral forelimb was investigated in 78 neurons in the magnocellular part of the medial geniculate body of curarized cats. Of this number, 33 neurons responded by discharges both to clicks and to electrodermal stimulation, 25 responded to clicks only, and 20 to electrodermal stimulation only, or to stimulation of the dorsal funiculus of the spinal cord. Conditioning stimulation evoked inhibition of the response to the testing stimulus in 32 of 33 neurons responding by spike discharges to both clicks and electrodermal stimulation. Electrodermal stimulation inhibited responses to clicks in all the neurons tested which responded only to clicks, whereas clicks evoked inhibition of responses to electrodermal stimulation (or to stimulation of the dorsal funiculus) in only four of the 20 neurons which responded to these types of stimulation only. It is suggested that inhibition of excitability arising in neurons of the magnocellular part of the medial geniculate body during interaction between auditory and somatosensory afferent volleys is based on postsynaptic inhibition.A. Responses of 252 neurons of the mediodorsal nucleus (MD) and 329 cells of the pulvinar-posterolateral complex (Pulv-LP) of the thalamus to single and combined stimulation of peripheral receptor systems (visual, auditory, and somatosensory) were investigated in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with a mixture of pentobarbital and chloralose. Three types of responses of these thalamic units to peripheral stimulation were distinguished: quickening of spontaneous activity (Pulv-LP 32.0, MD 20.6%), inhibition (Pulv-LP 21.0, MD 24.2%), and mixed (Pulv-8.8, LP MD 4.0%). No response was found in 37.4% of Pulv-LP neurons and 51.2% of MD neurons. Besides definite similarity in the organization of the two structures, Pulv-LP and MD also had differences. Responses of the neurons to stimulation of peripheral receptors were divided into three groups on the basis of the duration of their latent period: short (under 20 msec), average (21–40 msec), and long (over 41 msec) latent periods. The second group was the largest.Donetsk Medical Institute. Kemerovo Medical Institute. Translated from Neirofiziologiya, Vol. 10, No. 5, pp. 469–477, September–October, 1978.  相似文献

Responses of 150 neurons in the magnocellular part of the medial geniculate body to clicks and to electrodermal stimulation of the contralateral forelimb were investigated in cats immobilized with myorelaxin. Of the total number of neurons 65% were bimodal, 16.6% responded only to clicks, and 15.4% only to electrodermal stimulation. The unitary responses were excitatory (spike potentials) and inhibitory (inhibition of spontaneous activity). Responses beginning with excitation occurred more frequently to stimulation by clicks than to electrodermal stimulation, whereas initial inhibition occurred more often to electrodermal stimulation. The latent period of the initial spike potentials in response to clicks and to electrodermal stimulation was 5–27 and 6–33 (mean 11.6 and 16.2) msec respectively. Positive correlation was found between the latent periods of spike potentials recorded in the same neurons in response to clicks and to electrodermal stimulation, and also to electrodermal stimulation and to stimulation of the dorsal funiculus of the spinal cord. It is concluded that the magnocellular division of the medial genicculate body is a transitional structure between the posterior ventral nucleus and the parvocellular division of the medial geniculate body, and that in addition, it is connected more closely with the auditory than with the somatosensory system. It is suggested that the somatosensory input into the magnocellular division of the medial geniculate body is formed mainly by fibers of the medial lemniscus.A. A. In chronic experiments with glass microelectrodes responses of 288 spontaneously active neurons in the auditory cortex were investigated in cats at rest (123 neurons) and after defensive conditioning to sound (165 neurons). In the first situation 43% of neurons did not respond to acoustic stimulation. Most (about 60%) responses of the reacting neurons showed marked inhibition. Conditioning caused an increase (up to 72%) in the number of neurons responding to acoustic stimulation, the appearance of tonic responses, a severalfold increase in the amplitude of the responses, an increase in the number of responses of activation type, and stabilization of their form. The results point to increased excitability of neurons in this cortical area.A. A. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev. Postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) of 83 neurons in the motor cortex of unanesthetized cats in response to electrodermal, photic, and acoustic stimulation were investigated by intra-and quasi-intracellular recording methods. Most cells responded to stimulation of at least one limb. About 60% of neurons of the posterior and over 75% of neurons of the anterior sigmoid gyrus responded to stimulation of two (or more) limbs. In 29 of 39 neurons of the anterior and 12 of 44 of the posterior sigmoid gyrus PSPs with a short (less than 50 msec) and stable latent period were evoked by flashes and clicks. On presentation of two somesthetic stimuli complete blocking (if the interval was less than 30–60 msec) or weakening (interval 30–200 msec) of responses to the second (testing) stimulus was observed. On presentation of paired photic (or acoustic) stimuli or paired stimuli of different modalities at various intervals from 0 to 100 msec, the testing response was often potentiated. The character of the responses and their interaction thus differed from those obtained under chloralose anesthesia [6, 7]. It is postulated that under the action of chloralose a system of neurons with strong excitatory feedback is formed in the motor cortex which may respond to stimuli of different modalities by something resembling the "all or nothing" principle.Brain Institute, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Responses of pyramidal tract neurons and corticorubral and unidentified neurons in the pericruciate area of the cortex to electrical stimulation in the posterior, tuberal, and anterior zones of the lateral hypothalamus and also to electrodermal stimulation of all four limbs were studied in cats anesthetized with chloralose. The proportion of pyramidal tract, corticorubral, and unidentified neurons which responded to hypothalamic stimulation was 73.3, 55.7, and 79.1% respectively. Data on the possibility of monosynaptic activation of some pyramidal tract neurons and unidentified cells were obtained. The presence of less stable and longer-latency responses of corticorubral neurons indicated the absence of a monosynaptic pathway for realization of ascending hypothalamic influences on neurons of the cortical extrapyramidal system. Some cortical neurons responded to stimulation of more than one zone of the hypothalamus. Pyramidal tract neurons and corticorubral neurons with axon collaterals running into the region of the hypothalamus were discovered for the first time. It was shown that most neurons of the pericruciate area of the cortex to which the ascending influence of the hypothalamus is directed have a large bilateral receptive field and respond to electrodermal stimulation of several limbs.L. The responses of the cortical secondary auditory area (AII) to the non-acoustic stimuli (electrical stimulation of the skin in the vibrissae area and light flash) and their combination with acoustic stimulation (sound click or tone) were studied in experiments on cats anesthetized by kalipsol using extra- and intracellular recording. Of the total number of neurons, 69% of the units generating spike responses to the acoustic stimulation responded to the non-acoustic stimulation too. The responses to the modal-nonspecific stimulation, as a rule, were weak and variable; they were mostly represented by a tonic change in the neuronal discharge frequency. The nonspecific stimulation evoked primary excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in 77% and 20% of the examined neurons, respectively. We found that synaptic effects of the nonspecific and specific stimulations interact with each other, ensuring considerable modulation of the latter (mostly a significant facilitation resulting from the EPSP summation and suppression of an inhibitory component of the response to acoustic stimulation). Possible participation of the midbrain reticular formation in the transmission of the modal-nonspecific influences to the cortical neurons is considered; stimulation of this structure evoked responses similar to those evoked by the modal-nonspecific sensory stimuli.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophhysiology, Vol. 26, No. 5, pp. 356–364, September–October, 1994.  相似文献

In acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose and nembutal interaction between visual, auditory, and electrodermal stimuli in neurons of the parietal association cortex was studied. Two types of interaction were found; the first characterized by inhibition or by inhibition followed by facilitation of the response to the test stimulus, the second by facilitation or by facilitation followed by inhibition of spontaneous impulses. Interaction between stimuli of different modalities was shown to depend on the properties of the neuron. In polysensory neurons ability to interact was much higher than in bimodal or monomodal neurons.M. Gorkii Donetsk Medical Institute. Kemerovo Medical Institute. Habituation (extinction) of postsynaptic unit responses of the cat motor cortex to repetitive electrodermal, photic, acoustic, and combined bimodal stimulation was investigated by intracellular recording. Habituation was shown by a decrease in the number of spikes per grouped discharge and a decrease in the amplitude and duration of the EPSPs, and sometimes IPSPs, on repetition of the stimulus. The way in which the course of habituation depends on the modality and duration of stimulation (at a constant frequency of 1/sec) is examined. Habituation of postsynaptic responses to sensory stimuli is observed with neurons of different functional groups, namely identified neurons of pyramidal tract and unidentified neurons, some of which were evidently pyramidal neurons and interneurons. The hypothesis is put forward that the habituation of PSPs of the cortical neurons is based on processes taking place mainly at the subcortical level.A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University. Extracellular investigations on the activity of 269 caudate neurons during electrical stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation were carried out during chronic experiments on cats. Stimuli of different sensory modalities were used: auditory, mechanical, and visual. A response was observed to both reticular and peripheral stimulation in single neurons. The former produced an orthodromic response in 53% of caudate neurons, notable for its high probability of occurrence. A total of 23% of caudal neurons responded to this type of stimulation and application of stimuli of a single modality, while 14% responded polymodally. An excitatory response pattern prevailed during all types of stimulation. By applying twin stimuli to 100 caudate neurons, a capacity for interaction between reticular and acoustic inputs was discovered. Interaction was similarly observed in neurons which had reacted neither to separate application of both stimuli nor to either of the stimuli in isolation.A. A.
