Barnacles of German coastal waters. An attempt is made to provide a guide for the identification of seven barnacle species occurring in German coastal waters of the western Baltic and the North Sea. Variations in morphological characters observed in sessile adults are described, and figures drawn to differentiate the larvae of the nauplius and cypris stage. The information available on the distribution and ecology of the barnacles considered is reviewed.

Report on the 2nd Workshop on Fluorescence Chemosensors and Bioimaging,Dalian, China: one participant’s view

Abstract

I was invited to this Workshop, because I have published papers on the mechanisms of action of small molecule fluorescent probes used with living cells. The Workshop provided an opportunity to interact with some significant figures in the chemosensor and bioimaging field from across the planet; to spend time with a large, friendly and active group of local investigators and their graduate students; and to take a brief look at a vibrant modern city. Many scientific connections were made and collaborations planned for the Biological Stain Commission and for my own future work.

Boulder Outlines in Southwestern Minnesota

Abstract

The Plateau du Coteau des Prairies, extending from Iowa through the southwest corner of Minnesota to South Dakota, is a 300 mile long series of intermittent hills, knolls and ridges. Outlines of figures and forms were made on Buffalo Ridge, the highest point on the Coteau, by setting stones in the prairie sod. Testimony to these kinds of antiquities is rare. This paper reports boulder outlines on Buffalo Ridge, including the “stone man” effigy mentioned by Nicollet in 1842.     

Temporal changes in breast cancer incidence in South Asian women

BackgroundBreast cancer in the UK resident population of South Asian ethnicity has been lower than that in indigenous women. Leicester has a large South Asian population and a breast cancer unit with comprehensive data on diagnosed cancers. This study analysed the annual incidence of new breast cancer diagnoses in females from 1998 to 2009 to determine any changes in recent years.MethodsEthnicity was known in over 98% of cases. Population denominators were based on published figures for 2001 and 2011, projected back to 1998. Age-adjusted directly standardised incidence rates were determined by ethnicity and broken down by invasive status and screening classification. Incidence rates were analysed using logistic regression in order to identify statistically significant effects of age, ethnicity, deprivation and year of diagnosis. Interactions with invasive status and screening classification were also investigated.ResultsAt the start of the study period South Asian incidence was estimated to be 45% of that of the white population (p < 0.001); by the end of the period the difference was still significant (p = 0.022) but smaller, at 17%.ConclusionSouth Asians should no longer be considered at low risk of breast cancer.     

Some Thoughts on the Relationship Between Behaviorism,Comparative Psychology,and Ethology

ABSTRACT

Although there has been considerable literature produced on the relationship between behaviorism, comparative psychology, and ethology; there has not been a considerable consensus of opinion. Our position, more historically situated than many, argues that the crucial distinction remains simply: “Why does each discipline use animals as subjects?” Drawing on actual position statements by definitional figures, we believe that answers to this probative inquiry amply illustrates the substantial differences between these long-standing traditions.     

Examining the influence of sport program staff and parent/caregiver support on youth outcomes

Abstract

Youth participation in sport is associated with positive developmental outcomes. The development of life skills is especially important for urban youth of color who are often underserved and face poor long-term outcomes. To service the needs of underserved youth, community youth sport programs have begun to utilize sport-based positive youth development (PYD). Through this approach, key adult figures such as sport program staff and parents/caregivers have been identified as important mechanisms for life skill development and the transfer of learning. The aim of the current study sought to better understand how key adult figures influence life skill outcomes of urban youth of color involved in a community sport-based PYD program. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to examine the independent and interactive effects of staff support and parent/caregiver support on youth life skill and transfer of learning outcomes. Results indicated that staff support and parent/caregiver support predicted youth life skill and transfer of learning outcomes, both independently and, in some cases, interactively.     

Identifying skeletal-related events for prostate cancer patients in routinely collected hospital data

BackgroundNon-osteoporotic skeletal-related events (SREs) are clinically important markers of disease progression in prostate cancer. We developed and validated an approach to identify SREs in men with prostate cancer using routinely-collected data.MethodsPatients diagnosed with prostate cancer between January 2010 and December 2013 were identified in the National Prostate Cancer Audit, based on English cancer registry data. A coding framework was developed based on diagnostic and procedure codes in linked national administrative hospital and routinely-collected radiotherapy data to identify SREs occurring before December 2015. Two coding definitions of SREs were assessed based on whether the SRE codes were paired with a bone metastasis code (‘specific definition’) or used in isolation (‘sensitive definition’). We explored the validity of both definitions by comparing the cumulative incidence of SREs from time of diagnosis according to prostate cancer stage at diagnosis with death as a competing risk.ResultsWe identified 40,063, 25,234 and 13,968 patients diagnosed with localised, locally advanced and metastatic disease, respectively. Using the specific definition, we found that the 5-year cumulative incidence of SREs was 1.0 % in patients with localised disease, 6.0 % in patients with locally advanced disease, and 42.3 % in patients with metastatic disease. Using the sensitive definition, the corresponding cumulative incidence figures were 9.0 %, 14.9 %, and 44.4 %, respectively.ConclusionThe comparison of the cumulative incidence of SREs identified in routinely collected hospital data, based on a specific coding definition in patients diagnosed with different prostate cancer stage, supports their validity as a clinically important marker of cancer progression.     

Apport de la scintigraphie rénale avec test au captopril dans l’exploration de l’hypertension artérielle rénovasculaire : à propos d’un cas

IntroductionDynamic renal scintigraphy with ^99mTc-DTPA and captopril test is a non-invasive functional method for the diagnosis of renovascular hypertension. It allows differentiating between hypertension induced by renal arterial stenosis from primary arterial hypertension with an incidental stenosis.Case reportA 14-year-old girl, without previous medical history, developed a severe arterial hypertension with cephalgias and ears buzzing. Auscultation revealed a murmur in the left lumbar pit. Renal angiography objectified a stenosis of the infrarenal aorta due to a circumferential parietal thickening associated to renal arteries stenosis more marked in the left side. Dynamic renal scintigraphy after administration of captopril highlighted a marked collapse of the rate of tracer uptake exceeding 40% on the left side with an increase in the time of collecting on the right side testifying a frankly positive test prevailing on the left. A transluminal angioplasty of the left renal artery and a revascularisation surgery on the right side were carried out. The evolution was marked by an improvement of blood pressure figures.DiscussionDynamic renal scintigraphy using ^99mTc-DTPA with captopril test constitutes a non-invasive process with a low dosimetry for the patients. Its principal goal is to affirm the role of renovascular stenosis in the origin of arterial hypertension and to determine which hypertensive patients with renal arterial stenosis can be treated successfully by surgical or endoscopic revascularisation of the kidney.     

A Shoshonean Origin for the Plains Shield Bearing Warrior Motif

Abstract

The shield bearing warrior is a distinctive motif characteristic of the rock art of the Northwestern Plains. It also occurs commonly in the eastern Great Basin as an element of Fremont rock art. Detailed similarities between Plains and Great Basin shield figures suggest cultural relationships between the two areas. This has led some authors to propose that the motif originated in the Northwestern Plains and diffused to the Great Basin. Others argue that the motif spread from the Great Basin to the Plains. Relative dates recently obtained for shield figures at Northwestern Plains sites support the latter hypothesis. A Shoshonean origin for the Northwestern Plains shield figures is suggested by the dates, and the coincidence between the distribution of the motif, the distribution of diagnostic Shoshonean artifacts. and the ethnohistorically known range of the Plains Shoshone. It is suggested that the Shoshone borrowed the motif from the Fremont Culture during a period of interaction between the two groups.

The shield bearing warrior, a distinctive motif that depicts a pedestrian warrior whose body is represented by a large circular shield (Fig. 1), is frequently encountered in the rock art of the western United States. It is especially common at sites on the Northwestern Plains and in the eastern Great Basin (Fig. 2).     

Role of calorie restriction in alleviation of age-related morphological and biochemical changes in sciatic nerve

BackgroundAging is associated with structural, functional and biochemical alterations in the nervous system. Calorie restriction (CR) was found to retard most physiological indices of aging.ObjectivesThis work aimed to investigate the effect of CR on age-related changes in sciatic nerves.Materials and methodsThirty male albino rats aged 1 month were equally divided into three groups; Group I [control adult-ad libitum AL]: fed a regular diet and sacrificed at the age of 6 months, group II (aged-AL group): fed a regular diet AL and sacrificed at the age of 18 months, and group III (aged CR) fed a 40% calorie restricted diet and sacrificed at the age of 18 months. Rats were anesthetized and sciatic nerves were processed for light, electron microscope and morphometric studies. Oxidative stress in sciatic nerves was investigated by estimation of lipid perioxidation by product malondialdehyde (MDA) tissue level and antioxidant enzyme; superoxide dismutase activity (SOD).ResultsThe aged (AL) sciatic nerves appeared disorganized, with thick perineurium and increased collagen fibers associated with decreased g-ratio. Abnormal myelin forms were seen as outfolded myelin loops, thin denuded myelin, splitting of myelin into myelin figures and interlamellar vacuoles. Schwann cells revealed vacuolated cytoplasm. There was also significant increase in MDA level and a significant decrease in SOD activity in comparison to control adult (AL). Apparent structural and histomorphological improvement were noticed after CR in aged rats.ConclusionAging caused structural and biochemical alterations in sciatic nerves with alleviating effect of calorie restriction on such effects.     

‘Are we all secular/ized yet?’: reflections on David Goldberg’s ‘Are we all post-racial yet?’

ABSTRACT

This paper expands upon some of Goldberg’s initial reflections regarding the new type of ‘subject’ that is at the heart of post-raciality. A particular attention is paid to the connection with religion, as many of the current conflicts in Europe have been articulated through the grammar of secularism and religion, especially in relationship to Islam. This observation invites us to consider how this ‘racialization of religion’ figures as a reminder of the central role of this politico-theological question in the demarcation of who counts as a proper (political) subject, and how the current debates about Islam figure as a reminder of that.     

A quantitative method to examine large numbers of soil samples for Synchytrium endobioticum,the cause of potato wart disease

Summary Resting sporangia were collected from dried soil on 37-m mesh, extracted with chloroform, and deposited on grid, marked membrane filters. The technique gives consistent figures, a rapid estimate of the inoculum potential of a soil, and is suited for analysis of large volumes of soil samples.Contribution No. 47, Research Station, Agriculture Canada, P.O. Evaluation of an automatic method for detection of defects in linear and curvilinear ultrasound transducers

PurposeThe high incidence of defective ultrasound transducers in clinical practice has been shown in several studies. Recently, a novel method using only stored images for automatic detection of defective transducers was presented. The method makes it possible to remotely monitor many transducers at the same time and send a notification when a defective transducer is found. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the novel method and assess how well it performs when compared to an established method as reference.MethodsTo evaluate the novel method, in-air images were collected from 81 transducers in radiologic departments in nine hospitals. Two observers assessed the in-air images and marked the defects. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC)- and alternative free response receiver operating characteristic (AFROC)-curves and their figures of merit (FOM) were calculated for the novel method, using marked defects in the in-air images as reference truth.ResultsThe area under the ROC curve was 0.88 (SD 0.06), and the AFROC FOM was 0.71 (SE 0.07).ConclusionThe result shows that the novel method has a good agreement with the in-air method for detecting defects in ultrasound systems. This indicates that the novel method could be a complement to the normal quality control for early, and automatic detection of defects.
