Abstract

This bibliography lists and provides commentary on publications describing the history, preparation, chemistry and applications of indigo and related dyes. The dates of the publications are mostly, but not exclusively, later than the previously published indigo bibliography. Note that commentary by the author is placed after the bibliographic information and is set in italics.

Human influence on the vascular flora of the Veggiano territory (Padova - Italy)

Abstract

This paper is the result of 10 years of floristic research carried out in the Veggiano area (Padova). A floristic list of 612 taxa was drawn from bibliography (BEGUINOT, 1909–1914). According to our data (1990) 386 taxa are still present, with a loss of approximately 40%. The main cause of this loss is the disappearance of certain habitats (i.e. wood) and the alteration of others due to human influence.

Paradoxical Severe Decrease in High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Due to Rosiglitazone-Fenofibrate Interaction

ObjectiveTo determine whether the marked decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) occasion- ally associated with combination fibrate-thiazolidinedione therapy results from interaction between the 2 drugs or is solely the result of fibrate administration, a previously rec- ognized cause.MethodsWe prospectively followed the clinical course of 2 patients receiving fenofibrate and rosiglitazone and reviewed the relevant literature, searching PubMed for reports describing striking reductions in HDL-C associ- ated with fibrate administration alone and in conjunction with rosiglitazone and statins. Additional references were obtained from the bibliography of each identified article.ResultsEach of the 2 patients demonstrated a Drug Interaction Probability Score score of 9, indicating a highly probable likelihood of interaction. Critical review of all reported cases of concurrent fenofibrate-rosiglitazone– associated decreases in HDL-C failed to show conclusive evidence that the HDL-C decrease could be due to an inter- action between the 2 drugs as opposed to either drug being given alone.ConclusionsIn at least some patients who experience marked HDL-C decrease when given a combination of fenofibrate and rosiglitazone, this severe adverse effect is the result of a drug interaction between the 2 pharmaceuti- cal agents and is not reproduced by the administration of either drug singly. Hematoxylin and related compounds – an annotated bibliography concerning their origin,properties, chemistry,and certain applications

Abstract

This bibliography covers the historical aspects of hematoxylin and its close relative brazilin from their origin in dyewoods to their recently understood chemical reactions and properties. Until the end of the 19th century, dyewoods such as logwood were among the most commercially important natural dyes and investigations over a long period of time led to an extensive literature. The ready oxidation of hematoxylin to hematein, which subsequently can be complexed with metal ions or undergo reactions with acid to give isohematein, has provided a wealth of work for the organic chemist. The elucidation of the structure and subsequent synthesis of hematoxylin has proved to be a major incentive to chemists to discover novel chemical reagents for many years.

Review of skin dose calculation software in interventional cardiology

PurposeIn interventional cardiology, patients may be exposed to high doses to the skin resulting in skin burns following single or multiple procedures. Reviewing and analysing available software (online or offline) may help medical physicists assessing the maximum skin dose to the patient together with the dose distribution during (or after) these procedures.Method and resultsCapabilities and accuracy of available software were analysed through an extensive bibliography search and contacts with both vendor and authors. Their markedly differed among developers.In total, 22 software were identified and reviewed according to their algorithms and their capabilities. Special attention was dedicated to their main features and limitations of interest for the intended clinical use.While the accuracy of the 12 software products validated with measurements on phantoms was acceptable (within ± 25%), the agreement was poor for the two products validated on patients (within ± 43% and ± 76%, respectively). In addition, no software has been validated on angiographic units from all manufacturers, though several software developers claimed vendor-independent transportability. Only one software allows for multiple procedures dose calculation.ConclusionLarge differences among vendors made it clear that work remains to be done before an accurate and reliable skin dose mapping is available for all patients.

Les crustaces copepodes d'afrique catalogue et biogeographie

The various expeditions which yielded material of African copepods and the bibliography describing them, are listed. An arbitrary division of the continent into 20 sections is proposed. Biogeography and ecology of various species are discussed.

     

The identity of the genus Metaeritrichium in Boraginaceae

Metaeritrichium has been considered monotypic and endemic to China in traditional taxonomic treatments. However, our examinations of specimens and bibliography, combined with field observations, reveal that Metaeritrichium microuloides is conspecific with Actinocarya acaulis. Metaeritrichium is therefore treated as a synonym of Actinocarya. We also clarify the typification of Actinocarya acaulis.     

Dosimetric characterization of small fields using a plastic scintillator detector: A large multicenter study

PurposeIn modern radiation therapy accurate small fields dosimetry is a challenge and its standardization is fundamental to harmonize delivered dose in different institutions. This study presents a multicenter characterization of MLC-defined small field for Elekta and Varian linear accelerators. Measurements were performed using the Exradin W1 plastic scintillator detector.Materials and methodsThe project enrolled 24 Italian centers. Each center performed Tissue Phantom Ratio (TPR), in-plane and cross-plane dose profiles of 0.8 × 0.8 cm² field, and Output Factor (OF) measurements for square field sizes ranging from 0.8 to 10 cm. Set-up conditions were 10 cm depth in water phantom at SSD 90 cm. Measurements were performed using two twin Exradin W1 plastic scintillator detectors (PSD) correcting for the Cerenkov effect as proposed by the manufacturer.ResultsData analysis from 12 Varian and 12 Elekta centers was performed. Measurements of 7 centers were not included due to cable problems. TPR measurements showed standard deviations (SD) < 1%; SD < 0.4 mm for the profile penumbra was obtained, while FWHM measurements showed SD < 0.5 mm. OF measurements showed SD < 1.5% for field size greater than 2 × 2 cm². Median OFs values were in agreement with the recent bibliography.ConclusionsHigh degree of consistency was registered for all the considered parameters. This work confirmed the importance of multicenter dosimetric intercomparison. W1 PSD could be considered as a good candidate for small field measurements.
