Blood samples from unrelated persons living in New York, N.Y., were examined for phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and adenylate kinase (AK) phenotypes, the sample consisting of 164 Caucasians, 133 Negroes, 129 persons of Spanish origin or descent, and 156 Chinese for PGM and 136 Caucasians, 134 Negroes, 136 persons of Spanish origin or descent, and 156 Chinese for AK. The PGM1 gene frequency was found to be 0.7774 for Caucasians, 0.8083 for Negroes, 0.7461 for Hispanic persons, and 0.7917 for Chinese. One Hispanic person had a very rare type, PGM 8-1-FAST. The AK1 gene frequency was found to be 0.9669 for Caucasians, 0.9813 for Negroes, 0.9779 for Hispanic persons, and 1.000 for Chinese.  相似文献

1444 persons of British nationality living in London, and 294 Caucasians, 258 Negroes, 310 Hispanic persons, and 151 Chinese persons living in New York were tested for glutamate-pyruvate transaminase phenotype. The Gpt1 frequency in the British population was found to be 0.5277, the Gpt2 frequency was 0.4716, and two GPT 3-2 persons were found. The Gpt1 frequencies in the New York population were: 0.4834 in Chinese; 0.5226 in Hispanic persons; 0.8101 in Negroes; and 0.5306 in Caucasians. Two Caucasians possessed the GPT 3-2 phenotype.  相似文献

Some genetic traits in Solomon Island populations. IV. Mid-phalangeal hair   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Among 425 Lau and 467 Baegu of northern Malaita, there were no tribal differences in mid-phalangeal hair. The trait was present more often in males than in females, and after puberty than before it. Age differences were more marked for males than for females. Among 168 men 20 years of age and older in both tribes, the frequency of mid-phalangeal hair was 58.3%; among 189 women of similar age, 34.4%. These frequencies were at or just below those reported for Caucasian samples, just above that for Japanese, and considerably above those for Negroes and American Indians. Analysis of family data did not confirm the hypothesis that the absence of mid-phalangeal hair is recessive to its presence.  相似文献

The frequency of expression of the mylohyoid bridge was studied in the skeletal remains of 122 Pre-Columbian Peruvians. The incidence in this population was found to be 17.6% as compared to an incidence of 15.4% found in a similar size sample population of American Negroes and a 16.1% incidence in a population of American Whites from the Terry Collection. No significant differences as to the incidence of the mylohyoid bridge were found as to the side of occurrence or between deformed and undeformed crania. A mylohyoid bridge was found in a younger individual (6 years) than had previously been reported. Females showed a significantly higher incidence of this trait in all three populations studied. A similar incidence of the mylohyoid bridge in Pre-Columbian and Mongoloid peoples adds support to the theory of a Mongoloid origin of these people. The mylohyoid bridge is considered to be a significant genetic marker which along with other such markers could be of value in population studies.  相似文献

Hair patterns of the dorsum proper of the hand and foot are similar in occupying comparable anatomical positions. The more extensive hair patterns have a higher incidence in whites than in Negroes. And digital hair is more frequently absent on the lateral side of the hand and foot than on the medial side.  相似文献

The numbers of precoccygeal vertebrae (PCV) are compared in Southern African Negroes, Bushman (San) and American Negroes. The S.A. Negro and San males have an exceptionally high frequency of an increased total PCV number whilst the frequencies are significantly lower in a combined Caucasoid sample and the Mongoloid samples. The American Negro male, too, has a high frequency but not as high as in S.A. Negroes. The high frequency of increased PCV number in San, S.A. Negroes and American Negroes is in keeping with the view that the Khoisan peoples (here represented by the San), the Southern African Negroes and the African ancestors of American Blacks sprang from a common proto-negriform stock. Males have a significantly greater frequency of increased PCV to 30 or 31, whereas females are more likely to have a decreased number of 28 PCV. This sex difference is present in all the populations studied.  相似文献

Variation in number of presacral vertebrae (PSV) was examined in 462 vertebral columns in four populations drawn from tribal groups of Southern African Negroes. The total incidence of numerical variants (23 PSV and 25 PSV) was 19% in males and 12.1% in females. Males have a higher frequency of 25 PSV and females a higher frequency of 23 PSV, a sex difference reported by previous workers. Significant differences in the incidence of 25 PSV in males were present between S.A. Negroes, American Negroes and other racial groups. The total number of variants (23 PSV and 25 PSV) is significantly higher in S.A. Negro males (and higher but not significantly in females) than in the other groups; owing mainly to the findings in the Nguni-speaking sub-samples of the S.A. Negro. These findings support a previous suggestion based on combined-sex data that the frequency of numerical variations of PSV are characteristic of a population. It is suggested here that such frequencies are even more characteristic when males and females are considered separately.  相似文献

In this study are presented the results of an investigation of variation in 17 red cell enzyme systems in the Yoruba, a Negro population of western Nigeria. Nine of the systems were found not to be polymorphic. The other eight systems revealed a close resemblance to the Negroes of Southern Africa, and a marked contrast with the San ('Bushmen'). The Yoruba have a history of many centuries of urbanization, while the Southern African Negroes have only recently begun to inhabit large towns. It would appear not only that the polymorphisms investigated are irrelevant to adaptation to urban conditions, but also that no selective forces, and very little drift, has operated on them since the remote ancestral separation of the populations. These results also suggest that the Khoisan contribution to the Southern African Negro gene pool might not be as uniform or as considerable as might be supposed.  相似文献

The present report provides analytical data of digital dermatoglyphics on 150 subjects (79 males, 71 females) from Bluefields, Nicaragua and 146 (98 males, 48 females) from Livingston, Guatemala. They were classified as belonging to three sub-samples: Negroes (Bluefields) or Black-Caribs (Livingston), Ladinos and Creoles. However due to the very small size of some sub-samples, the findings, related to brief demographical and ethno-historical perspectives, were compared, for Pattern Intensity Index and Total Finger Ridge Count, with those of other human groups. Statistically significant differences occur between Negroes (Bluefields) and Black-Caribs (Livingston) but no sharp differences were found within the other sub-samples. Because the literature doesn't contain dermatoglyphic data for the Afro-American Communities spread over the Atlantic coast of Middle America, from Belize to Panama, and really few data have been collected regarding other anthropological observations, large gaps remain to be filled about these interesting inbreeding populations. It is right to remark that an investigation oriented to a population mixture study necessitates the collection of more dermatoglyphic data before the dermatoglyphic results can be properly evaluated.  相似文献

Stewart ('62) and Walensky ('65) indicated that while the metrical expression of anterior femoral curvature alone will not always differentiate between Whites, American Negroes, and North American Indians, it was very useful as a racial criterion in combination with observed traits such as torsion, pilastry, and cross-sectional shape. Seven additional North American Indian groups reported here, representing both pre-Columbian and post-contact times, upheld the observation that anterior femoral curvature is a useful feature of racial assessment for Negroes, Whites and North American Indians. However, two South American groups studied (Ecuador and Peru) were only slightly more curved than American Negroes, and were less curved than Whites and North American Indians. The metrical expression of anterior femoral curvature therefore is not a useful feature of racial assessment for separating these two South American Indian groups from Whites and American Negroes. Femora of American Negro and White individuals with low ponderal indices were found to be less bowed than the norms for their race; individuals with high ponderal indices were more bowed than the norm for their race. The assumed genetic basis for expression of anterior femoral curvature suggested by Stewart ('62) and Walensky ('65) seems to be a feature of human plastic response to body weight rather than to temporal, clinal, postural or equestrian influences.  相似文献

Analysis of extensive dermatoglyphic data, collected from West Kenya by Doz. E.M. Winkler, showed considerable intergroup variability in the frequencies of accessory triradii in the third interdigital area (interdigitum 3) of the palm. A review of the literature confirmed the universally low frequency of this trait, as well as its racial variability, with the Negroes having the highest frequency.  相似文献

Cycles II and III of the Health Examination Survey included measurements of the skinfolds of over 14,000 individuals 6 through 17 years of age, statistically weighted to provide an accurate national probability sample. Analyses of the triceps and subscapular skinfolds of Negroes and whites are reported here, utilizing the median in preference to the mean. Females of either racial group have thicker skinfolds at all ages studied. Whites have greater median triceps thicknesses than Negroes of the same sex and age, but there are no differences between the two racial groups in the subscapular. Since, between all but one pair of adjacent ages in males, from 12 years on, the median triceps fold decreases, but the estimated cross-sectional are of fat increases, it is strongly recommended that reductions in triceps thickness not be automatically interpreted as meaning a loss of subcutaneous fat. Since greater skewness is found in the subscapular distributions in whites, but not in the triceps, it is suggested that racial differences in triceps thickness at these ages occurs from the operation of hereditary factors, while differences in the subscapular skinfold arise from environmental causes.  相似文献

We present new data on the prevalence and patterning of the maxillary premolar accessory ridge (MxPAR), a common but understudied morphological dental trait that is expressed as a linear elevation extending from the buccal cusp ridge to the medial sulcus of maxillary premolar teeth. A total of 579 sets of dental casts, representing six ethnic groups, were scored using the five‐grade system proposed by Burnett et al. (2010). The frequency and distribution of the MxPAR were determined by tooth type, sex, side, locus and ethnicity, and the applicability of the scoring system was assessed. The MxPAR was found in approximately two‐thirds of premolar teeth, more often on second than first premolars, and more often on the distal aspect of the occlusal surface than the mesial. There was some evidence that more pronounced forms of the feature occurred more often in males than females, and that there may be some directionality in its expression between sides. Variation was also noted in the frequency of occurrence and degree of expression of the MxPAR between ethnic groups. Intra‐ and inter‐observer concordance rates for scoring the MxPAR were low, confirming that it was difficult to score the trait identically on two different occasions. Our findings have clarified the distribution of the MxPAR within the dentition and between ethnic groups, and highlighted the need for researchers to carry out thorough replicability studies and to decide on an appropriate breakpoint for determining presence or absence of this feature before embarking on genetic studies or bio‐distance analyses. We present three examples of anti-Fy3 produced by Negroes. Results of serologic studies were similar to those of previously reported examples of Negro produced anti-Fy3, including negative to weak reactivity with cord red blood cells, separable anti-Fya, and the presence of multiple unexpected alloantibodies. These findings reinforce the difference between anti-Fy3 produced by Negroes and that produced by non-Negroes. The rare formation of Duffy antibodies by Negroes may signify the presence of an amorphic gene at the Duffy locus.  相似文献

Diversity and Evolution of the Marsupial Mandibular Angular Process   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A medial inflection of the mandibular angular process is present in most marsupials. The few living marsupials that lack this trait either are very specialized forms (e.g., Tarsipes) or show a medial inflection at some point in development that is lost in later ontogenetic stages (cf. Dactylopsila and Phascolarctos). A medially inflected angular process is not present in any known extant or extinct placental (including all Cretaceous taxa that preserve the back of the dentary bone). Some extant placentals with enlarged auditory bullae evolved a medial flange of the angular process as a strategy to increase gape, but this is not homologous to the marsupial condition. We conclude that the medially inflected angular process is a shared derived trait of extant and extinct marsupials. The significant diversity in the form of the medially inflected mandibular angular process in marsupials, documented here for 53 taxa, shows a general relation to dietary adaptations. Herbivores (with well-developed masseter and medial pterygoid muscles) tend to have a shelf-like angular process, while small, insectivorous marsupials generally have a rod-like angular process. A close connection between the angular process and the ectotympanic is maintained during early postnatal development in all marsupials examined, a relation not seen in the placentals examined. A previous hypothesis suggested that the angular process plays a role in hearing in pouch-young Monodelphis. Data on the maturation of the auditory system does not support this hypothesis. Currently there are no data on differences in muscular anatomy or mastication between marsupials and placentals that could serve as a causal explanation for the difference in adult form of the angular process between the two groups.  相似文献

The incidence of carpal fusions was determined from radiographs of both hands of 2,250 Pretoria schoolchildren aged 72 to 191 months. The group included White, Negro, Coloured and Indian subjects. Of the many possible varieties of carpal fusion, only lunato-triquetral fusion and capitate-hamate fusion were encountered. No examples of lunato-triquetral fusion were encountered in children less than ten years of age. In Pretoria Negroes aged 10 to 15 years, the incidence of lunato-triquetral synostosis is 4.57%, while Pretoria Coloureds show an incidence of 1.51%. This type of fusion was not noted in the White or Indian populations. Two examples of capitate-hamate synostosis were encountered in Pretoria Negroes. The available evidence suggests that these two varieties of carpal fusion may be added to the list of discrete traits varying in frequency from population to population and probably reflecting different underlying gene frequencies. No significant sex difference in incidence of lunato-triquetral fusion was noted in the present study. Lunato-triquetral fusion is about twice as commonly bilateral as unilateral in occurrence.  相似文献

Electrophoretic types of red cell esterase D (Es D) have been determined in more than 1,000 blood samples from Tokyo. The allele frequency for Es D2 was found to be 0.342. Typing was also carried out in samples of the Ainu of Hokkaido and of the Ryukyuans of the Okinawa Island: the Es D2 frequencies were found to be 0.273 and 0.369, respectively. These values are considerably higher than those described in Europeans, Negroes and even in Asiatic Indians. The results indicate that Es D with a marked degree of heterogeneity is a valuable marker for genetic, anthropological and forensic application in Mongoloid groups.  相似文献

The Gm and Inv types were determined for eight San (Bushman) populations, two Khoikhoi (Hottentot) populations, one Coloured population, 112 San families in which the genotypes of the parents could be unambiguously determined, and for 65 San families in which the genotype of one or both parents could not be determined with certainty. The population and family data establish that the haplotype array of the San is composed of Gm1,21, Gm1,13, Gm1,5,13,14, and Gm1,5,13,14,21; Gm1,5,6 and Gm1,5,6,14 are also present but may have been acquired through admixture with Negroes. The Gm1,5,13,14,21 haplotype has not been found to be polymorphic in any other population. The haplotype array of the Khoikhoi is composed of Gm1,2,21, Gm1,13, and Gm1,5,13,14; Gm1,5,6 and Gm1,5,6,14 are also present but, as in the case of the San, may be due to admixture. The San and Khoikhoi differ from each other in that the former have the Gm1,21 and Gm1,5,13,14,21 haplotypes not present in the latter, and the Khoikhoi have the Gm1,2,21 haplotype not present in the San. These three haplotypes and Gm1,13 serve to distinguish the Khoisan people from other African peoples.  相似文献

The present study aims to examine the relationship between trait resilience and virtues in the context of trauma. A total of 537 participants who attended the preliminary investigation and completed the Life Events Checklist were screened. Of these participants, 142 suffered from personal traumatic experiences in the past year; these individuals were qualified and invited to respond to online questionnaires to assess trait resilience, virtues (i.e., Conscientiousness, Vitality, and Relationship), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and post-traumatic growth (PTG). The following questionnaires were used: Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-Revised, Chinese Virtues Questionnaire, PTSD Checklist-Specific, and Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Chinese. Only 95 participants who manifested self-reported PTSD symptoms and PTG were involved in the current analyses. Trauma was positively and significantly correlated with PTSD in the current sample. Results indicated that trait resilience was positively associated with virtues and PTG; by contrast, PTSD scores were negatively but not significantly related to most of these factors. The three virtues contributed to PTG to a greater extent than trait resilience in non-PTSD and PTSD groups. However, trait resilience remained a significant predictor in the PTSD group even when the three virtues were controlled. The relationship between trait resilience and PTG was moderated by PTSD type (non-PTSD group vs. PTSD group). Our results further suggested that trait resilience and virtues were conceptually related but functionally different constructs. Trait resilience and virtues are positively related; thus, these factors contributed variances to PTG in the context of trauma; however, trait resilience is only manifested when virtues are controlled and when individuals are diagnosed as PTSD. Furthermore, implications and limitations of this study are discussed.  相似文献

The mean content of ATP in red cells of American Negroes is significantly less than the mean level in American Caucasians. This is compatible with the hypothesis that the quantitative level of ATP in red cells may be involved in selective processes related to falciparum malaria. There is no evidence of a sex effect on levels of ATP in either population. Family studies conducted in both populations indicate that the quantitative level of red cell ATP is at least partially inherited. Studies of a number of biochemical characteristics of red cells have been conducted in an effort to elucidate the mechanism of genetic and biochemical control of quantitative levels of erythrocytic ATP. These studies have been negative. Although other studies have demonstrated that thalassemia trait influences the level of red cell ATP, the presence of sickle cell trait or G-6-PD deficiency, the other two systems postulated to be involved in malaria protection, did not result in significant differences in mean red cell ATP content. The work reported in this paper was supported in part by the Research and Development Command, Office of the Surgeon General, Department of the Army, under contract DA-49-193-MD-2855 with the Department of Medicine, University of Michigan. With respect to this support, it is contribution number 167 from the Army Research Program on Malaria.
