Abstract

In a recent (1974) article John H. Moore has challenged the validity of earlier ethnologies of the Cheyenne Indians, with respect to their presentation of Cheyenne sociopolitical organization. Moore advances a dialectic model, positing matrilineal, matrilocal uterine bands from which were drawn the Peace Chiefs, who constituted a uterine tribal council. In frequent opposition, were the military societies, which Moore identifies as agnatic units of organization. Viewed historically, power shifted from the “uterine” bands and tribal council to the “agnatic” military societies.  相似文献

Abstract

For a number of years, anthropologists have tended to classify religious leaders of more or less primitive peoples into shamans on the one hand, and priests on the other. Such terms are analytically useful, but like many polarities of their kind, they tend to break down when applied to “real world” situations. The Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indians of Montana provide interesting contrasts in this area, where two powerful religious themes - the tribal Sun Dance and the individual Vision Quest-- interact in various societies to produce a wide range of ceremonial expression. The literature on these two societies combines with modern field observation to suggest that in one case, shamans prevail entirely - while in the other, a real stage of separation between priest and shaman has developed, with one man serving in both capacities at various times.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper examines known origin myths and describes how the four Sacred Arrows were utilized by the Cheyenne in time of hunger and battle. By combining the existing folklore with an examination of Cheyenne prehistory, a more precise time and geographical point of origin of the whole Cheyenne Sacred Arrow “complex” is developed.  相似文献

Abstract

Death is a process in Northern Cheyenne culture, not an event, and the process of death reverses the process of development of the human person. Death marks the end of the association between spiritual self and physical body for human beings, but not the anihilation of the self. The Northern Cheyenne lives in a “great society” in which humans are not the only kind of participant, and deceased tribal members generally retain both tribal membership and personhood. Death, here, is transformation even transmigration and only those who have sinned or who die in a bad way will forfeit their place in the tribal community. Yet even a good death brings intense loneliness to those who remain, and fear of that loneliness is the greatest fear associated with death in the Northern Cheyenne community.  相似文献

Abstract

In 1959, after several years of teaching the Northern Cheyenne on the Tongue River Reservation in Montana, the writer was able to observe the annual Sun Dance in some detail, to photograph it, and to be present at the rare opening of the Sacred Medicine Hat Bundle which followed. This account reports the main events which took place, and establishes that the Northern Cheyenne Sun Dance has not only survived but has undergone relatively little change since it was reported by Grinnell in 1910. Marked similarity is also seen with the older Southern Cheyenne ceremony recorded by Dorsey in Oklahoma in 1903.

The Medicine Hat, still an object of much veneration, was inspected after a series of misadventures to determine whether its contents were safe, and thus was provided an opportunity to view for the first time in more than 25 years an old and famous object of significance in Plains religion.  相似文献

Abstract

The Northern Cheyenne, like most Plains reservation tribes, frequently hold public distributions of goods called give-aways. Give-aways occur throughout the year in order to honor individual Cheyennes and, through the obligation of reciprocity, intra-tribal and inter-tribal ties are established and maintained. The give-away exchanges and their functions are analyzed utilizing Marshall Sahlins’ typology of primitive exchange.  相似文献

Two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties, Cheyenne (Ch, winter wheat with excellent frost tolerance) and Chinese Spring (CS, spring wheat with weak frost tolerance), and chromosome substitution lines (CS/Ch 5A, CS/Ch 5D, CS/Ch 7A) created from Cheyenne and Chinese Spring were used to study the effect of chromosome substitutions on the membrane lipid composition in the leaves and crowns before and after cold hardening. The percentage of fatty acid unsaturation in phosphatidylethanolamine was greater in the crown of hardened Cheyenne than in Chinese Spring. The value of CS/Ch 5A was similar to Cheyenne and that of CS/Ch 5D to Chinese Spring, while the value of CS/Ch 7A was in between those of Cheyenne and Chinese Spring. A smaller difference was found between the unsaturation level in the phosphatidylcholine from Cheyenne and Chinese Spring after hardening, while the value obtained for the substitution line CS/Ch 7A was similar to Cheyenne. The percentage decrease in thetrans3-hexadecenoic acid content was found to be correlated with the frost tolerance of the wheat genotypes.  相似文献

Hayden's list provides a cross-reference on diffusion of societies, cults, and dances between portions of the Northern Cheyenne and Dakota tribes that had intermarried. It is the earliest list known of the five well known military societies of the Cheyennes and one society that early became extinct. Only one, the Elks, may be seriously questioned.  相似文献

Abstract

In response to Hoebel's criticism (1980) of the use of a dialectical model to interpret Cheyenne history, this article examines Hoebel's own views on kinship, politics, and social change. It is argued that Hoebel confuses descent with residence, and is committed to a methodology which necessarily gives inconclusive results. Most importantly, it is argued that Hoebel's theoretical perspective, characterized as “historical reductionism,” imposes a rigidly normative structure onto a society that was undergoing radical social change in the nineteenth century.  相似文献

This paper explores the emergence of the Slow Food Movement, an international consumer movement dedicated to the protection of ‘endangered foods.’ The history of one of these ‘endangered foods’, lardo di Colonnata, provides the ethnographic window through which I examine Slow Food's cultural politics. The paper seeks to understand the politics of ‘slowness’ within current debates over European identity, critiques of neo-liberal models of rationality, and the significant ideological shift towards market-driven politics in advanced capitalist societies.  相似文献

Abstract

This article examines how second-generation Filipinos understand their panethnic identity, given their historical connection with both Asians and Latinos, two of the largest panethnic groups in the USA. While previous studies show panethnicity to be a function of shared political interests or class status, I argue that the cultural residuals of historical colonialism in the Philippines, by both Spain and the USA, shape how Filipinos negotiate panethnic boundaries with Asians and Latinos, albeit in different ways. Filipinos cite the cultural remnants of US colonialism as a reason to racially demarcate themselves from Asians, and they allude to the legacies of Spanish colonialism to blur boundaries with Latinos. While the colonial history of Filipinos is unique, these findings have implications for better understanding racialization in an increasingly multiethnic society – namely, how historical legacies in sending societies interact with new racial contexts to influence panethnic identity development.  相似文献

Exogenous salicylic acid has been shown to confer tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present work the ability of its analogue, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid to increase abiotic stress tolerance was demonstrated: it improved the drought tolerance of the winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Cheyenne and the freezing tolerance of the spring wheat cv. Chinese Spring. Salicylic acid, however, reduced the freezing tolerance of Cheyenne and the drought tolerance of Chinese Spring, in spite of an increase in the guaiacol peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase activity. The induction of cross tolerance between drought and freezing stress was observed: drought acclimation increased the freezing tolerance of Cheyenne plants and cold acclimation enhanced the drought tolerance. The induction of drought tolerance in Cheyenne was correlated with an increase in catalase activity.  相似文献

We have used a cDNA clone encoding a pathogen-induced putative wheat peroxidase to screen a genomic libary of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Cheyenne) and isolated one positive clone, lambda POX1. Sequence analysis revealed that this clone contains a gene encoding a putative peroxidase with a calculated pI of 8.1 which exhibits 58% and 83% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence of the turnip (Brassica rapa) peroxidase and a pathogen-induced putative wheat peroxidase, respectively. The two introns in the wheat gene are at the same positions as introns in the peroxidase genes of tomato and horseradish. Results of S1-mapping experiments suggest that this gene is neither pathogen-nor wound-induced in leaves but is constitutively expressed in roots.  相似文献

Abstract

Black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) are one of the rarest mammals of North America; ferrets are most often associated with prairie dogs (Cynomys sp.) on which they are thought to be obi igatory predators. Ferret and prairie dog skeletal remains have been found from several sites occupied by Paleo-Indians; these sites are described. The recent history of five Indian groups contain reference to ferrets and prairie dogs: Sioux, Blackfeet, Crow, Cheyenne, and Pawnee. Use of ferrets is described for each tribe. A request is extended to all readers having published or unpublished information about aboriginal associations with prairie dogs (Cynomys sp.) or black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) to please contact the author.  相似文献

Pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase in wheat leaves   总被引:9,自引:3,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
Pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK) was found in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Cheyenne [CI 8885]) leaves both by activity assays and by the protein blot method. The specific activity of the wheat enzyme is comparable to that of PPDK from maize leaves. Of the total soluble protein in wheat leaves, about 0.05% was PPDK, comparable to the amount in the immature wheat seed and about 1/70th the amount found in mesophyll cells of maize. Immunoprecipitation of wheat PPDK with maize enzyme antiserum indicates partial identity, and the apparent subunit molecular weight is the same based on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper attempts to trace the stylistic development of Plains Indian figurative hide painting. Beginning with its possible origins in the petrographs and bark drawings of the pre-and early historic Northeast and Southwest it ends with the ledger drawings of the late 19th century. The early (pre 1860) hides are shown to have indicated events through a form ofvisual shorthand in contrast to the detailed refinement of the illustrated scenes on later hides. The ledger drawings include both traditional warfare themes and scenes from reservation life, ending with views of the white world drawn in the white man’s manner. One drawing by Bears Heart, a Cheyenne prisoner in Florida, is examined in some detail and in relationship to the historical, biographical and cultural world in which it was created.  相似文献

Abstract

A brief field survey among the Lakota on the Cheyenne River, Rosebud, and Pine Ridge reservations was made possible by a grant from the Long Beach California State College Research Foundation. The purpose of the survey was to decide whether further in-depth studies were warranted of the psychological dimension of acculturation among these people. Hallowell’s hypothesis regarding the persistence of the modalpersonality structure seemed to be at least a relevant working hypothesis among the Lakota. Since cultural understandings of death have been shown to be integrally related to the modal personality structure, overt expressions relating to death were chosen as one possible clue to the continuance of the covert aspects of the typical personality. Observations made support Hallowell’s hypothesis, and suggest that further study is warranted.  相似文献

Infrared heater arrays for warming ecosystem field plots   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
There is a need for methodology to warm open‐field plots in order to study the likely effects of global warming on ecosystems in the future. Herein, we describe the development of arrays of more powerful and efficient infrared heaters with ceramic heating elements. By tilting the heaters at 45° from horizontal and combining six of them in a hexagonal array, good uniformity of warming was achieved across 3‐m‐diameter plots. Moreover, there do not appear to be obstacles (other than financial) to scaling to larger plots. The efficiency [ηh (%); thermal radiation out per electrical energy in] of these heaters was higher than that of the heaters used in most previous infrared heater experiments and can be described by: ηh= 10 + 25exp(? 0.17 u), where u is wind speed at 2 m height (m s? 1). Graphs are presented to estimate operating costs from degrees of warming, two types of plant canopy, and site windiness. Four such arrays were deployed over plots of grass at Haibei, Qinghai, China and another at Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA, along with corresponding reference plots with dummy heaters. Proportional integral derivative systems with infrared thermometers to sense canopy temperatures of the heated and reference plots were used to control the heater outputs. Over month‐long periods at both sites, about 75% of canopy temperature observations were within 0.5 °C of the set‐point temperature differences between heated and reference plots. Electrical power consumption per 3‐m‐diameter plot averaged 58 and 80 kW h day? 1 for Haibei and Cheyenne, respectively. However, the desired temperature differences were set lower at Haibei (1.2 °C daytime, 1.7 °C night) than Cheyenne (1.5 °C daytime, 3.0 °C night), and Cheyenne is a windier site. Thus, we conclude that these hexagonal arrays of ceramic infrared heaters can be a successful temperature free‐air‐controlled enhancement (T‐FACE) system for warming ecosystem field plots.  相似文献
