The first controlled excavation of a Clovis site in Iowa revealed a concentration of complete and fragmentary Clovis Fluted projectile points. The site, in eastern Iowa, is interpreted as a projectile point cache destroyed by agricultural implements. Sesame Utilization in China: New Archaeobotanical Evidence from Xinjiang. A cache of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds, discovered in the Thousand Buddha Grottoes at Boziklik, Turpan, China, dating to ca. 700 years before present (BP), is hard evidence of their use in China since that time. Morphological and anatomical features suggest a white sesame cultivar. The sizeable quantity unearthed implies that sesame was a valued commodity that could provision the monks and enrich the diet of ancient inhabitants as an oil source.  相似文献

Background: The lack of regeneration of cork oak (Quercus suber) is putting at risk the conservation of the montado. Biotic and abiotic factors as well as management are thought to constrain regeneration.

Aims: Identify limitations to regeneration during the early stages and relate them to management practices.

Methods: Experimental burying of acorns was carried out at three distinctly managed montados. Cache predation, seedling emergence, survival and resprouting were monitored during the first year. Regeneration was evaluated by testing the effect of biotic and abiotic factors in each stage.

Results: Regeneration was determined by temperature and relative humidity. Early emerged seedlings showed higher drought tolerance and resprouting ability. Bigger acorns and higher plant cover significantly assisted emergence, survival and resprouting. Mortality causes were drought (38%) and mechanical ploughing (33%), while cache predation and browsing on seedlings were low (1.7%, when excluding tag effect on cache predation, and 0.6%, respectively). Seedling emergence and survival of drought were significantly lower in the most disturbed site than in the other two sites.

Conclusions: Abiotic factors restrain regeneration while acorn size and plant cover are key factors determining seedling emergence and survival. The lack of regeneration may be overcome in the short term by preserving the shrub layer. Moreover, reforestation by direct sowing should be also considered.  相似文献

Abstract

A bottle-necked cache pit was excavated near Old Fort Thompson, Buffalo County, South Dakota in June of 1955 by a University of Kansas field party as part of a non-reservoir salvage project.

The site is interesting due to the presence of three variants of Talking Crow Straight Rim pottery apparently unreported up to this time. These consist of a square orifice vessel, a vessel incorporating what most closely resembles Stanley Tool Impressed incised lip decoration, and a vessel bearing three bands of differing design motifs on the lip and upper rim exterior.

This site is tentatively assigned to the Fort Thompson focus of the Pahuk aspect. It probably dates to the first half of the 18th century.  相似文献

Seed caching and reciprocal cache pilferage play an important role in the coexistence of food‐hoarding animals. Understanding what affects seed caching and how cache pilferage occurs is an important question in seed dispersal ecology. However, tracking seed fate and cache pilferage presents substantial practical difficulties. Siberian chipmunks Tamias sibiricus always remove the entire pericarp when scatter‐hoarding acorns of Mongolian oak Quercus mongolica, whereas wood mice Apodemus peninsulae often store whole acorns in their caches. These differences in behavior provide an opportunity to investigate unilateral cache pilferage of T. sibiricus from A. peninsulae in response to seed abundance. In this study, tagged acorns were released at the peak and end periods of seed rain from Q. mongolica. This allowed us to investigate seed caching and unilateral cache pilferage at different seed abundances. We found that a higher proportion of acorns were cached at lower level of seed abundance (toward the end of seed rain), mainly because T. sibiricus rather than A. peninsulae scatter‐hoarded significantly more acorns at this time. Cache distances decreased with increasing seed abundance, indicating that acorns were cached further away and into smaller caches at lower seed abundance. Unexpectedly, unilateral cache pilferage by T. sibiricus was not significantly influenced by seed abundance—remaining at around 28% during both periods of high and low seed abundance.  相似文献

Capsule In autumn, Rooks cached large quantities of acorns, which were retrieved during winter.

Aims To describe the autumn storing of acorns by Rooks in a natural situation and to quantify the retrieval of acorns during winter.

Methods The collection, transportation and caching of acorns were studied during four autumns, and cache retrieval during two winters, in an extensive grassland area of southern Sweden.

Results Rooks transported acorns from a few tens of metres up to 4 km from the source oaks and carried a mean number of 3.56 acorns (range 2–7) during outward flights. Permanent grass appeared to be the preferred caching habitat. In winter, 1 to 1.5 acorns per Rook per hour were retrieved during active foraging. Some were re-cached, with a much lower proportion being re-cached in late than in early winter. In snowy conditions Rooks foraged in the grasslands only when the snow cover was broken or very thin, suggesting that they were unable to use their stores in deep snow.

Conclusion Observations strongly indicate that Rooks knew the exact location of their caches and probably possess the long-term memory capacity necessary to relocate caches made several months earlier. It is concluded that Rooks are the most specialized food hoarders of the Corvus species.  相似文献

Caches play an important role in embedded systems to bridge the performance gap between fast processor and slow memory. And prefetching mechanisms are proposed to further improve the cache performance. While in real-time systems, the application of caches complicates the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) analysis due to its unpredictable behavior. Modern embedded processors often equip locking mechanism to improve timing predictability of the instruction cache. However, locking the whole cache may degrade the cache performance and increase the WCET of the real-time application. In this paper, we proposed an instruction-prefetching combined partial cache locking mechanism, which combines an instruction prefetching mechanism (termed as BBIP) with partial cache locking to improve the WCET estimates of real-time applications. BBIP is an instruction prefetching mechanism we have already proposed to improve the worst-case cache performance and in turn the worst-case execution time. The estimations on typical real-time applications show that the partial cache locking mechanism shows remarkable WCET improvement over static analysis and full cache locking.  相似文献

Background: Animals that hoard food to mediate seasonal deficits in resource availability might be particularly vulnerable to climate-mediated reductions in the quality and accessibility of food during the caching season. Central-place foragers might be additionally impacted by climatic constraints on their already restricted foraging range.

Aims: We sought evidence for these patterns in a study of the American pika (Ochotona princeps), a territorial, central-place forager sensitive to climate.

Methods: Pika food caches and available forage were re-sampled using historical methods at two long-term study sites, to quantify changes over two decades. Taxa that changed in availability or use were analysed for primary and secondary metabolites.

Results: Both sites trended towards warmer summers, and snowmelt trended earlier at the lower latitude site. Graminoid cover increased at each site, and caching trends appeared to reflect available forage rather than primary metabolites. Pikas at the lower latitude site preferred species higher in secondary metabolites, known to provide higher-nutrient winter forage. However, caching of lower-nutrient graminoids increased in proportion with graminoid availability at that site.

Conclusions: If our results represent trends in climate, cache quality and available forage, we predict that pikas at the lower latitude site will soon face nutritional deficiencies.  相似文献

Black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) store food in a scattered distribution in their winter home range. Several hundred food items may be stored in a day, each in a separate cache site. Previous studies of marsh tits (Parus palustris) and nutcrackers (Nucifraga spp.) have shown that spatial memory is used to relocate caches. Memory for storage sites, if used by black-capped chickadees, is predicted to have four properties. Birds should be able to: (1) accurately relocate cache sites, (2) recall which caches they have previously emptied, (3) recall which sites they have discovered empty (as a result of loss to other animals) and (4) recall what type of food is stored at a cache site. Laboratory experiments show that chickadees do incorporate these kinds of information in memory for cache sites.  相似文献

同种和异种干扰竞争可以增强花鼠(Tamias sibiricus)分散贮食强度,但对其贮藏点选择的影响还不清楚.在半自然围栏内,研究了同种(干扰源为不同性别花鼠)或异种(干扰源为大林姬鼠,Apodemus peninsulae)干扰竞争对花鼠贮藏点选择的影响.结果发现:(1)同种和异种干扰竞争均显著降低了花鼠在高竞争区内的贮藏比例;(2)同种个体存在时,雌性花鼠显著降低了在高竞争区内的贮藏比例,雄性花鼠则显著增加了在中竞争区的埋藏比例.结果表明,花鼠贮藏食物时会避开高竞争区域以降低同种或异种的盗食损失,同时雌雄个体对同种竞争干扰的响应有所差异.  相似文献

不同植物种子依靠不同的方式实现扩散,啮齿动物对林木种子搬运后在取食点微生境和贮藏方式的选择存在偏好,研究其贮藏行为与微生境的关系是探究幼苗建成的关键。在秦岭中段火地塘林区,采用标签标记法,以锐齿槲栎、华山松和油松种子为材料,探究了小型啮齿动物对松栎混交林建群种种子扩散过程的影响。结果表明:1)油松种子原地取食率显著高于锐齿槲栎和华山松种子,且啮齿动物更倾向于搬运后取食(60%)和埋藏(4.33%)华山松种子,搬运后取食距离也为华山松最大(2.49 m);锐齿槲栎小种子被搬运后埋藏的距离最大(4.92 m)。2)除华山松种子外,其他类型种子被搬运后单个取食的比例均在85%以上;油松种子不存在埋藏点,而其他类型种子90%以上均以单个形式被埋藏。3)大部分种子被啮齿动物搬运后选择在裸地丢弃;锐齿槲栎大种子(87.5%)、小种子(78.57%)和华山松种子(53.33%)较大比例被啮齿动物埋藏在灌丛下方,埋藏在裸地的种子较少。4)大部分种子在灌丛下方被取食,仅华山松种子被啮齿动物搬运到洞穴取食;除油松种子被大量原地取食外,其他类型种子被搬运到取食点的种子比例基本呈现由微生境植被复杂到简单(灌丛—草丛—灌丛边缘—裸地)而逐渐减小的趋势。种子的营养价值及取食和搬运过程中啮齿动物付出的成本是影响种子命运的关键性因子,且啮齿动物对种子埋藏和取食地点的微生境存在较明显的选择性。  相似文献

Seed predation can cause significant losses of weed seeds in agricultural systems and can, thus, contribute to weed control. The removal of Lolium multiflorum and Vicia villosa seeds by harvester ants, Messor barbarus, and granivorous rodents, Mus spretus, in six cereal fields in NE Spain was separated into three sequential processes, namely (1) the probability of finding a seed cache (cache encounter rate), (2) the percentage of seeds utilized once a seed cache has been found (seed exploitation rate) and (3) seed selection if multiple species are present (preference). Identifying the most important behavioural component and factors that drive it may help to better understand and manage seed predation.Seed cache encounter rate correlated well with overall seed removal rate caused by harvester ants (r2 = 0.91), or rodents (r2 = 0.82). Once found, seed exploitation rates were high and fairly constant from spring to autumn for harvester ants, and low throughout the season for rodents. Harvester ants removed almost all L. multiflorum seeds from caches found, while the exploitation of V. villosa seeds varied across the season. In the case of rodents, cache encounter rate, but not exploitation rate, could be explained by canopy cover provided by the crop. L. multiflorum seemed to be preferred in early 2007, whereas V. villosa was in 2008.The adoption of no-till or minimum tillage systems together with the establishment of field edge vegetation are likely to encourage seed cache encounter and exploitation rates by both harvester ants and rodents, thus leading to increased weed control in semi-arid cereals.  相似文献

Seed dispersal and predation are paramount for tropical plant diversity. When encountered by scatter-hoarding frugivores, seeds can be either eaten, dispersed or ignored. But even after dispersal, seed caches are still subjected to predation. Many factors are known to influence these dynamics; however, how frequently hoarders use certain patches has seldom been related to cache predation rates. We used the interaction between agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina), a scatter-hoarding rodent, and Joannesia princeps, a tropical tree, as a model to investigate how the number of visits by hoarders in certain areas influences cache predation and seed fate. Camera-traps were used for 30 days in twenty different locations in Tijuca National Park to assess number of visits by agoutis. Thereafter, we placed seed piles on the same areas and determined their fate using the spool-and-line method to track seeds for over one hundred days. We found a non-linear relationship between how often an area is used by hoarders and the final proportion of dispersed seeds. At areas with a low number of visits, proportion of dispersed seeds was low due to low removal. As frequency of visits by hoarders increased, seed removal and the number of dispersal events increased but so did cache predation. Thus, in areas intensively used by hoarders, high cache predation resulted in a low number of dispersed seeds that remained alive in caches. As a result, dispersal was maximized in areas with intermediate use by scatter-hoarders, where there was a balance between primary seed dispersal and cache predation.

Food-storing birds lose a great deal of their stored food toother animals. We examined whether blackcapped chickadees (Parusairicapillus) modify their choice of cache sites using informationthat predicts cache loss. In experiment 1, birds learned toavoid caching at spatial locations where cache loss had previouslyoccurred, but they did not avoid caching near local color cuesthat predicted cache loss. Birds did not modify their generaluse of space in the aviary. Birds also learned to reduce searchingfor caches where spatial location predicted cache loss. Experiment2 confirmed the birds’ ability to discriminate among thespatial locations and the local color cues used in experiment1. In experiment 3, learning a food-rewarded approach to potentialcache sites occurred without any change in the choice of sitesfor caching. We discuss how chickadees selectively associatethe choice of cache site with its consequences, even over delaysof several hours between caching and cache recovery.  相似文献

Abstract

The Black partizan Site, a large fortified village situated in the constricted neck of the Big Bend of the Missouri River, Lymar County, South Dakota, was excavated by field parties of the Missouri Basin Project, Smithsonian Institution, during the field seasons of 1957 and 1958.

In total, 15 structures or areas designated as features were investigated. These included 3 midden areas, concentrations of cache pits, sectional cuts through the defensive ditch, and a bastion strong point. Four large circular houses were investigated, 2 in an area just outside of the fortified perimeter and 2 within the village proper. An additional house, probably square, and another of indeterminate outline were also excavated from the latter area.

The artifact collection is large and varied, but to date, only the ceramic sample has been examined in detail. Slightly less than 17,000 sherds were excavated, of which 2400 were rim sections- the latter have been tentatively classified as follows: Russel Ware (plain, diagonal, horizontal incising), Campbell Creek Ware, Talking Crow Ware, Arzberger, and other collared rims. On the basis of ceramics and architectural remains, components related to both the Campbell Creek and Fort Thompson Foci are surely present. A further occupation, poorly defined as yet, seems to equate to Talking Crow C.  相似文献

During cache recovery experiments, Clark's nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) often revisit cache sites that were emptied during previous recovery sessions (Kamil & Balda 1985). In the current experiments, nutcrackers were allowed to cache pine seeds and recover them in several recovery sessions. The results of two experiments demonstrate that neither leaving signs of previous digging activity nor leaving many pine seeds in the caches affects the tendency to revisit.  相似文献

Abstract. Dispersal and retrieval site selection by mice, transport distance, cache depth, and emergence and survival of seedlings of Castanea crenata (Japanese chestnut) were investigated by a magnet‐locating experiment in two habitat conditions (gap vs. forest understorey). Magnets were inserted into nuts (n= 450) and the nuts placed in the edge of forest gaps. Although wood mice (Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus) initially buried nuts singly in shallow surface caches near the nut source, by the following spring these cached nuts were retrieved and re‐cached in larger, deeper caches farther from the source, particularly in forest understories, probably to reduce the threat of pilferage. All the nuts cached in the forest understories were consumed, but 4 seedlings emerged in gaps, apparently because of lower foraging activity in the gaps by the mice. Seed size was not correlated with cache depth or cache site selection. With increasing seed size, transport distance increased, particularly in gaps, possibly due to a greater potential energy gain (relative to handling cost to the cacher), or to attempts to prevent density‐ or mass‐dependent loss of caches by other foragers. Variable seed dispersal behaviour based on variation in seed size may influence the chances of colonization and distribution of the light‐demanding Castanea trees in mosaic landscapes and may play an important role in community organization and dynamics.  相似文献

Many rodents hoard seeds as a means of ensuring food availability during scarcity. Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) feed on acorns of white oak Quercus mongolica and hoard them for future use. Such caches may deteriorate due to the early germination of the acorns in autumn, which can be inhibited by radicle pruning or embryo excision. Siberian chipmunks are found to frequently prune the radicles of germinated acorns of Q. mongolica; however, whether this behavior is a kind of cache management tactic remains unclear. Here, we performed semi-natural enclosure and field experiments to test the role of radicle pruning in cache management of T. sibiricus. We found that T. sibiricus preferred non-germinated acorns and tended to prune radicles of germinating acorns when scatter-hoarding them, but did not perform the behavior of embryo excision by squirrels. Both semi-natural enclosure and field experiments showed that T. sibiricus not only pruned radicles repeatedly but removed radicles varied in length from acorns, which significantly postponed acorn germination and radicle growth. These observations suggest that radicle pruning would be an evolutionary tactic for cache management of Siberian chipmunks.  相似文献
