Understanding which factors drive the diversity and community composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is important due to the role of these soil micro‐organisms in ecosystem functioning and current environmental threats to AMF biodiversity. Additionally, in agro‐ecosystems, this knowledge may help to evaluate their use in making agriculture more sustainable. Here, we used 454‐pyrosequencing of small subunit rRNA gene amplicons to quantify AMF diversity and community composition in the roots of cultivated apple trees across 24 orchards in central Belgium. We aimed at identifying the factors (soil chemical variables, organic vs. conventional farming, and geographical location) that affect AMF diversity and community composition. In total, 110 AMF OTUs were detected, of which the majority belonged to the Glomeraceae (73%) and the Claroideoglomeraceae (19%). We show that soil characteristics and farming system, rather than the geographical location of the orchards, shape AMF communities on apple trees. Particularly, plant‐available P content of the soil was associated with lower AMF diversity. In orchards with a lower plant‐available P content of the soil (P < 100 mg/kg soil), we also found a significantly higher AMF diversity in organically managed orchards as compared to conventionally managed orchards. Finally, the degree of nestedness of the AMF communities was related to plant‐available P and N content of the soil, pointing at a progressive loss of AMF taxa with increasing fertilization. Overall, we conclude that a combination of organic orchard management and moderate fertilization may preserve diverse AMF communities on apple trees and that AMF in the roots of apple trees appear not to be dispersal limited at the scale of central Belgium.

Plants host microbial communities that can be affected by environmental conditions and agronomic practices. Despite the role of bark as a reservoir of plant pathogens and beneficial microorganisms, no information is available on the effects of disease management on the taxonomic composition of the bark-associated communities of apple trees. We assessed the impact of disease management strategies on fungal and bacterial communities on the bark of a scab-resistant apple cultivar in two orchard locations and for two consecutive seasons. The amplicon sequencing revealed that bark age and orchard location strongly affected fungal and bacterial diversity. Microbiota dissimilarity between orchards evolved during the growing season and showed specific temporal series for fungal and bacterial populations in old and young bark. Disease management did not induce global changes in the microbial populations across locations and seasons, but specifically affected the abundance of some taxa according to bark age, orchard location and sampling time. Therefore, the disease management applied to scab-resistant cultivars, which is based on a limited use of fungicides, partially changed the taxonomic composition of bark-associated fungal and bacterial communities, suggesting the need for a more accurate risk assessment regarding possible pathogen outbreaks.

Orchards are parts of agriculture and apart from their economic role they may preserve biodiversity in highly transformed farmlands. An increasing intensity of orchards management is known to be threat for some species, especially pollinators and birds. On the other hand, the biodiversity of abandoned orchards was hardly investigated. Here, I present a survey of orchards in Poland to estimate how bird's diversities differ in response to the intensity of orchards management. In 2014, 66 orchards of three types – abandoned, extensively and intensively managed – were investigated. Bird species' richness and abundance were found to be highest in abandoned orchards but overall bird diversity and species composition in abandoned did not differ from these found in extensively managed orchards. In abandoned and extensively managed orchards, hollow-dwellers and insectivores (with some rare old-forest associated species) dominated, whereas in intensively managed orchards the most diverse were ground-dwellers. Among the several selected environmental features, the highest impact on bird diversity was related to the tree diversity, abundance of older trees, presence of multilayer understory and heterogeneous surrounding. The preliminary study point that traditional orchards could play a important role for wood-dwelling species in agriculture and because of that the removal or replacement of all traditional orchards by intensively managed orchards should be avoided and needs of orchard protection should be implemented into Agri-Environmental Schemes/High Nature Value farming systems and possibly also into habitat directive of EU. Unfortunately, the number of abandoned and extensively managed orchards is declining from agricultural landscapes, and traditional orchards are replaced by conventional fruit plantations.

In the present study, we proposed to determine the genetic diversity and relationships between local cultivars and wild olive trees from three important olive-growing regions, i.e., Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean, of Turkey. This is the first known large-scale molecular study to investigate the relationships between local cultivars and wild olives from the eastern Mediterranean basin. Two hundred and four oleaster trees and 27 cultivars were sampled to represent molecular diversity. We used 11 simple sequence repeat and 13 sequence-related amplified polymorphism markers to assess genetic variations and inter-relationships among the samples. The results of the analysis showed differences in the levels of allelic composition and heterozygosity between cultivated and wild olive trees. The observation of a high proportion of a certain wild-type genetic background in the cultivars may indicate the former use of local wild trees in olive domestication in Turkey, a possible autochthonal origin of cultivars. “Gemlik” was found to be the most common olive cultivar in the Marmara region and most of the wild olive samples from this region may be feral forms derived from cultivar seed spreading. The information obtained from this study can help to assist the management of an olive collection and sheds some light on the origin of Turkish olive cultivars.

Apple production systems are an important component in the Chinese agricultural sector with 1.99 million ha plantation. The orchards in China could play an important role in the carbon (C) cycle of terrestrial ecosystems and contribute to C sequestration. The carbon sequestration capability in apple orchards was analyzed through identifying a set of potential assessment factors and their weighting factors determined by a field model study and literature. The dynamics of the net C sink in apple orchards in China was estimated based on the apple orchard inventory data from 1990s and the capability analysis. The field study showed that the trees reached the peak of C sequestration capability when they were 18 years old, and then the capability began to decline with age. Carbon emission derived from management practices would not be compensated through C storage in apple trees before reaching the mature stage. The net C sink in apple orchards in China ranged from 14 to 32 Tg C, and C storage in biomass from 230 to 475 Tg C between 1990 and 2010. The estimated net C sequestration in Chinese apple orchards from 1990 to 2010 was equal to 4.5% of the total net C sink in the terrestrial ecosystems in China. Therefore, apple production systems can be potentially considered as C sinks excluding the energy associated with fruit production in addition to provide fruits.

The knowledge and conservation of diminishing valuable habitats in agricultural landscapes are of key importance in saving declining farmland biodiversity. One of these habitats is the traditional orchard whose role in supporting birds is still poorly known, especially in winter. We counted birds in 106 orchards differing in management intensity (abandoned, traditional, and intensive) during December 2009 and January 2010 in Wielkopolska, western Poland and measured site characteristics and composition of surrounding landscapes for every orchard. Old abandoned and traditionally managed orchards had significantly higher bird species richness than intensive ones. Irrespective of orchard type, bird species richness as well as density were positively influenced by the cover of unmown herb layer in orchards and tree diversity. Tree and fruit densities positively affected bird species richness and density mainly in abandoned orchards while in other orchard types the effect of these variables was less pronounced. Land cover diversity in a landscape had a positive effect on species richness and density mostly in abandoned orchards and we believe that this effect reflects the elevated utilization of such orchards by birds from the surrounding landscape. Thus, abandoned, as well as traditionally managed orchards seems to be especially important habitats that offer food source and refuge for wintering birds and should be protected. We propose to diversify fruit production by planting various tree species, leaving part of the herb layer unmown and several trees unharvested in intensive orchards in order to improve suitability of modern orchards for birds.

High biodiversity is an important component of sustainable agricultural systems, and previous studies have found that increases in the diversity of the natural enemies of pests are associated with decreases in pest populations. Weaver ants are well known for their highly territorial and aggressive behaviour and for their control efficiency of many insect pests in tropical crop trees. Because of this, the ants have been used as a key component in integrated pest management (IPM) programmes for tropical crop trees. In implementing the IPM programmes, we received a number of enquiries related to whether weaver ants have negative effects on arthropod diversity and other natural enemies in orchard systems due to their aggressive behaviour. To answer these questions, we regularly sampled canopy arthropods in cashew and mango orchards in the Northern Territory of Australia in 1996, 2002 and 2003. We sampled, using a vacuum sampler, orchards with and without weaver ants. Cashew and mango plots with abundant weaver ants had similar or higher canopy arthropod and natural enemy diversity and similar ratios of natural enemies to insect pests, compared with plot where the weaver ant was absent. The study also showed that the application of insecticides reduced arthropod diversity and the ratio of natural enemies to insect pests in a mango orchard. However, insecticide spray did not affect natural enemy diversity and abundance, which may be related to a high immigration rate of natural enemies in small plots surrounded by areas that were not sprayed.

Previously, the distances between odor‐baited spheres deployed on perimeter trees of apple orchards for behavioral control of apple maggot flies, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), have been assigned largely arbitrarily. Here, we report a new approach for assigning distances that employs an index incorporating the state of four environmental variables: the size of orchard trees, quality of pruning, cultivar composition, and nature of bordering habitat. The deployment of odor‐baited spheres on the perimeters of 12 plots of apple trees (each ~0.4 ha) in commercial orchards in 2003 resulted in an apple maggot control which was no different from that achieved by insecticide sprays in adjacent plots in 2003, and no different from that achieved by an arbitrary assignment of distances between odor‐baited spheres on perimeter trees in these same plots in 2001 and 2002. However, only 61–67% of spheres were used under the new index approach compared with the previous arbitrary approach, thereby substantially reducing the cost of behavioral control. Our findings are discussed in relation to use of the index for blocks of trees which are large in size and pruned poorly vs. small in size and pruned well, and in relation to the cost‐competitiveness of odor‐baited perimeter spheres vs. insecticidal sprays for the control of apple maggots.

The species richness and species composition of Coleoptera assemblages were investigated in the canopies of apple and pear orchards in Hungary and in the apple orchards in Great Britain. The investigations were carried out in Hungary (Nagykovácsi: 3 plots, Kecskemét: 5 plots, Sárospatak: 4 plots) between 1990-94, and in Great Britain in Kent (East Malling, Marden and Robertsbridge) in 2001 and 2002. Former investigations in Hungary revealed that the diversity of Coleoptera assemblages in the canopy of apple and pear orchard were surprisingly high. As a result of our investigations it was found that altogether 324 species, almost 3% of the Hungarian beetle fauna were represented: 253 species in apple orchards and 188 species in pear orchards. Similar results were obtained in the investigations carried out in Great Britain between 2001-2002. In Hungary, the majority of the species belonged to the families Curculionidae, Chrysomelidae and Coccinelidae. The proportion of leaf beetles varied between 15 and 20%. The most common leaf beetle species in the canopy of the commercial orchards were Phyllotreta vittula, Phyllotreta atra, Phyllotreta nigripes, Oulemta melanopus, and Aphthona euphorbiae. In the abandoned orchards the most common species were Luperus xanthopoda, Smaragdina salicina and Orsodacne liieola. In Great Britain 44 leaf beetle species were found in the canopies of the investigated orchards. The species with higher abundance were Aphthona euphorbiae. Chaetocnema concinna and Longitarsus parvulus. We concluded, that leaf beetles give high part of the orchard canopy biodiversity and sometimes occur with high species richness and abundance. However, the reasons of their occurrence and their potential role are poorly known.

The initiation and level of infestation by dogwood borer, Synanthedon scitula (Harris), was tracked over three consecutive years in two nonbearing apple (Malus spp.) orchards in West Virginia and Virginia. The orchards were planted on a number of rootstock-variety (approximately cultivar) combinations and grown using different cultural practices. Infestations were detected during the first season after planting and continued to increase annually. The amount of burr knot tissue had the greatest impact on dogwood borer populations, because increasing amounts of burr knot tissue resulted in higher infestation rates. The use of plastic spiral wrap tree guards seemed to increase the development of burr knot tissue, resulting in significantly greater infestation compared with trees without tree guards in the West Virginia orchard. Variety also had a significant effect, because 'Idared' trees on M.26 had significantly greater levels of infestation compared with 'Buckeye Gala' on M.26, with or without tree guards, in the Virginia orchard. Mounding soil around the rootstock to a height just above the graft union prevented or tremendously curtailed infestation by dogwood borer, but it led to scion rooting that seemed to have an impact on size-controlling features of dwarfing rootstocks. Removal of the mounds at the beginning of the third growing season resulted in infestation of the rooted tissue during the same season. As long as apple cultivars continue to be planted on size-controlling rootstocks, dogwood borer will likely remain a serious pest, requiring either chemical treatments or a behavioral control strategy, such as mating disruption, to protect trees from infestation and damage.

Honeybee-assisted gene flow by pollen is of enormous benefit to world food production. Molecular genetic markers were used to detect the pollen-contributing parent in embryos of seeds after fruit set and, subsequently, to deduce the direction and distance of gene flow by pollen as assisted by bees in an almond orchard. It was shown that gene flow by pollen resulting in nut set takes place most strongly between neighbouring sides of adjacent cross-compatible pairs of trees. Examination of pellets extracted from pollen traps fitted to hives for the isozyme markers showed that most of the pellets were composed of pollen from only one cultivar or another, in accord with the hypothesis that the honeybee predominantly visits only one cultivar, either single trees or along rows of one cultivar, and that cross-pollination results from accidental or rare visits involving two cultivars. The results suggest that orchards should be designed to bring cross-compatible pairs of cultivars as close together as possible. Received: 26 April 1996 / Revision accepted: 16 August 1996  相似文献

The biocontrol potential of naturally occurring parasitoids is influenced by the parasitoids’ population and individual characteristics. We studied field determinants of characteristics of the parasitoid Scambus pomorum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) emerging from weevils (Anthonomus pomorum; Coleoptera: Curculionidae) hidden in damaged apple blossoms. The studied determinants comprised local-scale factors that can be managed by individual growers: tree cultivar, distance between apple trees and forest, and presence of ants. The studied parasitoid characteristics were sex ratio, body size and emergence time. Parasitoid sex ratio, in general female-biased, was significantly different for parasitoids emerging from hosts feeding on different apple cultivars. This finding suggests sex ratio adjustment driven by plant genotype-dependent variation in parasitoid host quality. The detected significant increase of sex ratio (more males) with increasing distance to forest might be explained by sperm depletion of ovipositing parasitoid females immigrating into the orchard. Exclusion of ants significantly increased female-bias in sex ratio in one of the studied apple cultivars. Body size of female and male parasitoids was significantly different between parasitoids emerging from different apple cultivars, supporting the view of cultivar-dependent variation in the quality of the parasitoid’s host. Distance to forest was positively correlated with parasitoid size, indicating farther dispersal of larger individuals. Emergence time varied significantly between apple cultivars, probably due to differences in plant phenology. By demonstrating that parasitoid characteristics vary widely within an orchard, this study shows that parasitoid characteristics that are relevant for biological control might be improved via appropriate management of the orchard and its immediate surroundings.

Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), Apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) and Apple mosaic virus are economically important viruses infecting fruit tree species worldwide. To evaluate the occurrence of these pome fruit viruses in Latvia, a large‐scale survey was carried out in 2007. Collected samples were tested for infection by DAS ELISA and multiplex RT‐PCR. The accuracy of the detection of the viruses in multiplex RT‐PCR was confirmed by sequencing amplified PCR fragments. The results showed a wide occurrence of viruses in apple and pear commercial orchards established from non‐tested planting material. More than 89% of the tested apple trees and more than 60% of pear trees were infected with one or more pome fruit viruses. Analyses showed that the high occurrence of viruses in several apple cultivars is due to the propagation of infected clonal rootstocks and scions from infected mother trees. Sequence analyses targeting the 3′‐terminal region of the tested viruses showed various degrees of genetic diversity within respective virus isolates. This is the first report of the occurrence of ACLSV, ASGV and ASPV in apple and pear trees in Latvia and demonstrates their genetic diversity in different host genotypes.

In high-value crops such as apple, Malus X domestica (Borkh.), insecticidal pest control is of high relevance. The use of resistant apple cultivars can increase the sustainability of pest management in apple orchards. Besides variation in plant chemistry that may influence plant resistance by antibiosis or antixenosis, plant growth characteristics also can affect plant susceptibility to pests such as aphids. Variable susceptibility to the apple aphid, Aphis pomi De Geer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), has been described for different apple cultivars. These observations were based on phenotypic surveys and no information on genetically based apple resistance to A. pomi is yet available. The objective of this study was to relate shoot growth characteristics with aphid population development, and to assess the genetic background of apple antibiosis-based resistance to A. pomi by quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis. Aphid population development was repeatedly studied in the field in sleeve cages attached to 200 apple trees of different genotypes. Aphid population development was positively correlated to shoot length and growth, and it also was affected by climatic conditions. Indications for antibiosis-based resistance to A. pomi remained weak in the studied apple genotypes, and the only detected putative QTL on linkage group 11 of'Fiesta' apples was not stable for the different replications of the experiment. This lack of quantifiable resistance may be partly explained by environmental conditions related to aphid development in sleeve cages.

A set of 493 old and local Spanish accessions of apple (Malus x domestica Borkh) maintained at three collections in Northeastern Spain was studied using 16 simple sequence repeats in order to estimate their genetic diversity and to identify the genetic structure and relationships among their accessions. An additional diverse set of 45 apple cultivars, including old Spanish and international cultivars, was added as reference. Genetic analyses performed by Bayesian model-based clustering revealed a very strong differentiation of two major groups. The first one clustered 159 individuals (52?% of unique genotypes) including local accessions and six old Spanish cultivars. The second major group was formed by 145 individuals, including 38 international reference cultivars and one old Spanish cultivar. Nested Bayesian clustering was applied to those two groups and two and four sub-groups were found at each one, respectively. The identification of private and unique alleles, and the remarkable differences in allelic richness among groups and sub-groups constitute further evidence of a clear genetic structure. The results obtained through the factorial correspondence and analyses of molecular variance confirmed those obtained by Bayesian analyses, revealing moderate but significant differentiation among the two major groups (F ST?=?0.076) and the six sub-groups (F ST?=?0.111). Our results highlight that the genetic diversity encompassed by currently cultivated apple accounts only for a small fraction of that existing within the species, and that an important part (??60?%) of the local material analyzed constitutes a good example of genetic distinctness with respect to the main cultivars used in European orchards.

Background and Aims

Recent biodiversity research has focused on ecosystem processes, but less is known about responses of populations of individual plant species to changing community diversity and implications of genetic variation within species. To address these issues, effects of plant community diversity on the performance of different cultivars of Lolium perenne were analysed.

Methods

Populations of 15 genetic cultivars of Lolium perenne were established in experimental grasslands varying in richness of species (from 1 to 60) and functional groups (from 1 to 4). Population sizes, mean size of individual plants, biomass of individual shoots and seed production were measured in the first and second growing season after establishment.

Key Results

Population sizes of all cultivars decreased with increasing community species richness. Plant individuals formed fewer shoots with a lower shoot mass in more species-rich plant communities. A large proportion of variation in plant size and relative population growth was attributable to effects of community species and functional group richness, but the inclusion of cultivar identity explained additional 4–7 % of variation. Cultivar identity explained most variation (28–51 %) at the shoot level (biomass of individual tillers and reproductive shoots, seed production, heading stage). Coefficients of variation of the measured variables across plant communities were larger in cultivars with a lower average performance, indicating that this variation was predominantly due to passive growth reductions and not a consequence of larger adaptive plastic responses. No single cultivar performed best in all communities.

Conclusions

The decreasing performance of Lolium perenne in plant communities of increasing species richness suggests a regulation of competitive interactions by species diversity. Genetic variation within species provides a base for larger phenotypic variation and may affect competitive ability. However, heterogeneous biotic environments (= plant communities of different species composition) are important for the maintenance of intra-specific genetic variation.Key words: Biodiversity, competition, genetic variation, growth reduction, Lolium perenne, phenotypic plasticity, species richness  相似文献
