During the ripening stage of barley and rice, the sink activitywas defined as the dry matter increase per units sink size,leaf area and time, as follows: NAR = A.SinkW+NAR', where NAR is the net assimilation rate (g d.wt dm–2d–1);A is the sink activity [g d.wt g–1d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1]; Sink W is ear wt per plant at heading (g d.wt);and NAR' is net assimilation rate excluding the assimilate ofsink organ (g d.wt dm–2 d–1). Plant material with 16 combinations of mutually different sink(ear) and source (leaf) size were produced at heading for eachcrop: parts of each leaf and ear were removed to produce fourgrades in barley, and also a part of each leaf was removed producingfour grades for four rice varieties showing different ear size.NAR and NAR' were determined during 26 and 21 d in barley andrice after heading, respectively. Sink activity (A), representedas the assimilation rate induced by the sink organ, was estimatedfrom the relationship between SinkW and NAR using the previousequation. The sink activity was significantly higher in ricewith a value of 0–0.028 g d.wt g–1 d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1 vs. 0–0.0017 in barley, suggesting that therelative role of leaves for grain filling is considerably higherin rice than in barley. The sink activity obtained in the studymight be introduced into a model to predict the yields of barleyand rice. The calanoid copepod, Eudiaplomus graciloides, was reared fromegg to adult on uni-algal diets (0.1. 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt1–1) using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,as food, or on a mixed diet consisting of Lake Esrom water filteredthrough a plankton net with pore size 45 µm and supplementedwith C. reinhardtii (2.5 mg dry wt 1–1). On the mixeddiet at 21.0°C growth in body dry wt (W, µg dry wt)was exponential, and the growth constants were 0.21 day–1in the early to mid juvenile stage (N1 - C4) and 0.11 day–1in the late juvenile to early adult stage (C4-A). At 14.5°Cthe corresponding growth rate constants were 0.10 and 0.08 day–1.Similar growth rates were found at uni-algal concentrationsof 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt I–1, and it was argued that thethreshold concentration for growth in Eudiaptomus was closeto 0.1 mg dry wt I–1. The clearance (C, ml h–1)of copepodites was measured on the uni-algal diets. The constantsof the regression (C = aWb) were: a = 0.125, b = 0.858 (2000C. reinhardtii ml–1), a = 0.068, b = 0.849 (10 000), a= 0.028, b = 0.875 (50 000). Ingestion rates were calculatedfrom the clearances and the average algal concentrations. Atthe three food levels the average daily rations were 30, 67and 125% of body dry wt. The respiration rate (R, nl O2 h–1)was measured in individuals reared on the mixed diet. The constantsof the regression (R = aWb) were: a = 4.82, b = 1.07 (nauplii,14.5°C), a = 4.17, b = 0.904 (copepodites and adults, 14.5°C),a = 6.87, b = 0.757 (copepodites and adults, 21.0°C). Nosignificant difference in the respiration rate of copepoditesreared on uni-algal diets and the mixed diet could be demonstrated.Energy budgets were calculated. The assimilation efficiencyand the gross growth efficiency of copepodites decreased markedlywith increasing food concentration, the net growth efficiencyvaried from an average of 0.44 at the lowest algal concentrationto 0.60 on the mixed diet. The results are discussed in relationto previous findings with both freshwater and marine copepods.  相似文献

Bot. 38: 42–52 Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) was grown for49 d in flowing nutrient solution at pH 6?0 with root temperaturedecrementally reduced from 20?C to 5?C; and then exposed todifferent root temperatures (3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13,17 or 25?C)held constant for 14 d. The air temperature was 20/15?C day/nightand nitrogen was supplied automatically to maintain 10 mmolm–3 NH4NO3 in solution. Total dry matter production wasexponential with time and similar at all root temperatures givinga specific growth rate of 0?0784 g g–1 d–1. Partitioningof dry matter was influenced by root temperature; shoot: rootratios increased during treatment at 17?C and 25?C but decreasedafter 5 d at 3?C and 5?C. The ratio of shoot specific growthrate: root specific growth rate increased with the ratio ofwater soluble carbohydrates (shoot: root). Concentrations ofwater soluble carbohydrates in shoot and root were inverselyrelated to root temperature; at 3, 5 and 7?C they increasedin stem + petioles throughout treatment, coinciding with a decreasein the weight of tissue water per unit dry matter. These resultssuggest that the accumulation of soluble carbohydrates at lowtemperature is the result of metabolic imbalance and of osmoticadjustment to water stress. Population structure and production of Eudiaptomus gracilis(G.O. Sars) have been calculated from daily measurements inLake Balaton for one month during each summer in 1975 and 1977.Fecundity was different in the two years 6.98 ? 1.16 and 10.68? 1.42 in 1975 and 1977, respectively. A total of 80% and 64%of the population were made up of larvae in 1975 and 1977, respectively.The ratio of males to females was 1:1.63 and 1:1.1, respectively.In 1975 it was possible to follow the development of cohorts,19 –20 days in the former year, 17 –20 days in thelatter. In both years of examination 80 – 83% of naupliiand 12–15% of copepodites were eliminated. Daily net biomassproduction was 6.88 mg (dry wt.)/m3 in 1975 and 1.94 mg (drywt.)/m3 in 1977. Ratios of eggs, nauplii and copepodites indaily production was 1:2.4:1.4 in 1975 and 1:1.0:1.0 in 1977.The daily potential biomass production were 34.40 mg (dry wt.)/m3 and 10.28 mg (dry wt.)/m3 and the elimination were 80 and81 wt.%, respectively. Smith, J. R., Smith, F. A. and Walker, N. A. 1987. Potassiumtransport across the membrane of Chara. I. The relationshipbetween radioactive tracer influx and electrical conductance.—J.exp. Bot. 38:731–751. The 42K influx () and the electrical conductance (Gm) were measured simultaneously for the ‘membrane’of internodal cells of Chara australis as a function of theexternal [KCl] (K?. In bathing solutions of pH = 5?0, progressively increased from 20?5to 430?60 nmol m–2 s–1 and Gm increased from 0?36?0?02to 3?8?0?8 S m–2 when K? was increased from 0?1 to 10mol m–3. The resting membrane potential difference (p.d.)was approximately -135 mV for low K? and approached the expectedNernst equilibrium p.d. for K+ ions when K? > 1?0 mol m–3.Measurements of 36Cl influx suggested that the 42K influx waspredominantly electrogenic. The equivalent Goldman permeabilityto K+ ions (Pk) was approximately 20–30 nm s–1 anddid not vary significantly with increasing K?. The equivalentconductance attributable to the electrogenic transport of K+ ions was calculated from assuming passive, independent diffusionof K+ ions and the ratio was found to be typically close to one. It was also found that themagnitudes of and Gm measuredsimultaneously for each individual cell were also well correlatedfor K? 1?0 mol m–3, and that the slope of the line ofbest fit was close to one. For each K? it was found that theconductance not attributable to K+ translocation and presumablyassociated primarily with the transport of protons or theirequivalents was typically 0?2–0?5 Sm–2. For K? >1?0 mol m–3 the results indicated that the transport ofK+ ions was essentially independent, i.e. there was no evidencefor flux interactions. The results also indicated that the equivalentconductance derived from the measured 42K influx could usefullyindicate the fraction of the electrical conductance attributableto the translocation of K+ ions. Relationshipsbetween acetylene reduction activity, hydrogen evolution andnitrogen fixation in nodules of Acacia spp.: Experimental backgroundto assaying fixation by acetylene reduction under field conditions.—J.exp. Bot. 38: 1–12 Glasshouse grown, symbiotically-dependent seedlings of Acaciaalata R.Br., .A. extensa Lindl., and A. pulchella R.Br. wereexamined for acetylene reduction in closed assay systems usingundisturbed potted plants, excavated whole plants, nodulatedroots or detached nodules. Nitrogenase activity declined sharplyover the first hour after exposure of detached nodules to acetylene(10% v/v in air), less steeply or not at all over a 3 h periodin assays involving attached nodules. Using detached nodules,rates of acetylene reduction, nitrogen (15N2) fixation, andhydrogen evolution in air (15N2) and acetylene-containing atmosphereswere measured in comparable 30 min assays. Total electron flowthrough nitrogenase in air was determined from rates of nitrogen(15N2) fixation ( ? 3) plus hydrogen evolution, that in thepresence of acetylene from rates of acetylene reduction andhydrogen evolution in air: acetylene. Values for the ratio ofelectron flow in air: acetylene to that in air ranged from 0?43to 0?83 in A. pulcheila, from 0?44 to 0?66 in A. alala and from0?37 to 0?70 in A. extensa, indicating substantial inhibitionof electron flow through nitrogenase of detached nodules byacetylene. Relative efficiencies of nitrogenase functioningbased on hydrogen evolution and acetylene reduction were from0?15 to 0?79, those based on nitrogen (15N2) fixation and hydrogenevolution from 0?53 to 0?87. Molar ratios of acetylene reducedto nitrogen (15N2) fixed were 2?82 ? 0?24, 201 ? 0?15, and 1?91? 0?11 (?s.e.; n = 7) for A. pulcheila,A. extensa and A. alata respectively A standard 5–10 min acetylene reduction assay, conductedon freshly detached unwashed nodules in daytime (12.00–14.00h), was calibrated for field use by comparing total N accumulationof seedlings with estimated cumulative acetylene reduction overa 7-week period of glasshouse culture. Molar ratios for acetylenereduced: nitrogen fixed using this arbitrary method were 3?58for A. alata, 4?82 for A. extensa and 1?60 for A. pulchella.The significance of the data is discussed. Plants of Lycoperstcon esculentum Mill. cv. Ailsa Craig wildtype and flacca (flc) were sprayed daily with H2O or 2?10–2mol m–3 abscisic acid (ABA). ABA treatment effected apartial phenotypic reversion of flc shoots; leaf areas wereincreased and transpiration rates decreased. Leaf expansionof wild type shoots was inhibited by ABA. Indoleacetic acid (IAA), ABA and l-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylicacid (ACC) concentrations were determined by combined gas chromatography-massspectrometry using deuterium-labelled internal standards ABAtreatment for 30 d resulted in greatly elevated internal ABAlevels, increasing from 1?0 to 4?3 and from 0?45 to 4?9 nmolg–1 fr. wt. in wild type and flc leaves respectively.Endogenous IAA and ACC concentrations were much lower than thoseof ABA. IAA content ranged from 0?05 to 0?1 nmol g–1 andACC content from 0?07 to 0?24 nmol g–1 Ethylene emanationrates were similar for wild type and flc shoots. Wilting of detached leaves induced a substantial increase inethylene and ACC accumulation in all plants, regardless of treatmentor type. Ethylene and ACC levels were no greater in flc leavescompared to the wild type. ABA pretreatment did not preventthe wilting-induced increase in ACC and ethylene synthesis. The unicellular green alga Coccomyxa, a component of the lichenPeltigera aphthosa, liberated about 7.2mµg biotin permg dry weight of cells into the culture medium during a growthperiod of 15–20 days. The corresponding figure for thefree-living alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa was 0.45mµg ofbiotin. Chromatographic analysis indicated that this was freebiotin and not a bound form of the vitamin. The biotin concentrationof rinsed Coccomyxa cells was 1.88mµg per mg dry weightof cells, of which less than 0.01mµg was extractable byhot water. Cells of Chlorella contained 0.16mµg of biotinper mg dry weight, of which 0.11mµg was extractable byhot water. The biotin content of Coccomyxa, which was about12 times that of Chlorella, is thus almost entirely in the boundform. Sugar beet seedlings (Beta vulgaris L. cv. Monohill) were grownfor 14 d on a nutrient solution based on the nutrient proportionsin healthy plants. Nutrients were supplied either once at relativelyhigh concentrations, or in small amounts with a daily incrementalincrease of 0?15 or 0?20 in accordance with an exponential growthrate. Cadmium (0, 0?6, 2?3, 50 or 20?0 µmol) was introducedeither by a single addition or in daily increments of 0?15 or0?20. Cadmium uptake, expressed as a percentage of total Cd2+supplied, decreased with increasing total Cd2+ content and withdecreasing availability of nutrients. With a daily supply ofcadmium, net uptake, transport and content per unit of dry weightin roots and shoots were related to the total Cd2+ supplied.Cadmium caused growth retardation, increased root/whole-plantratio, and decreased root-tip respiration and photosynthesis.At high initial nutrient concentrations, Cd2+ decreased thecontents of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and starch per unitof dry weight. The opposite was found if nutrients were addeddaily. In the latter case, the dry weight/fresh weight ratioalso increased. The effects of cadmium were related to [Cd2+]in proportion both to the root absorption area and to the nutrientconcentration. Microscopic analyses of tundra soils from northern central Siberia, Taimyr Peninsula (74.5°N, 98.5°E) were performed in order to investigate spatial variation of fungal and bacterial biomass. Biomass figures of fungi and bacteria (µg C g-1 dry wt.) were measured from 11 permafrost soil pits. Fungal biovolume of up to 3.5 mm3 g-1 dry wt. (median 0.19 mm3 g-1 dry wt.) and a maximum hyphal length of 393 m g-1 dry wt. (median 21 m g-1 dry wt.) were determined. Fungal biomass was found up to 455 µg C g-1 dry wt. (median 24 µg C g-1 dry wt.). The amounts generally decreased with depth but increased within organic horizons. Little fungal biomass was found in the unvegetated soils or deep horizons above the permafrost table. Bacterial counts ranged from 0.16 to 7.38*109 g-1 dry wt. and bacterial biomass ranged from 0.68 to 20.38 µg C g-1 dry wt. (median 6.19 µg C g-1 dry wt.) because of small cell volume (median 0.04 µm3). Microbial biomass was generally dominated by fungi as shown by the ratio of fungal to bacterial biomass, which was between 0 and 174.1 (median 4.5). Plant cover and soil organic matter content were found to be the important keys in understanding microbial ecology in arctic tundra soils.  相似文献

The Uptake of Gaseous Ammonia by the Leaves of Italian Ryegrass   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Lockyer, D. R. and Whitehead, D. C. 1986. The uptake of gaseousammonia by the leaves of Italian ryegrass.—J. exp. Bot.37: 919–927. Plants of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) grown insoil with two rates of added 15N-labelled nitrate were exposed,in chambers, for 40 d to NH3 in the air at concentrations of16, 118 and 520 µg m–3. At the highest concentrationof NH3, this source provided 47?3% of the total nitrogen inplants grown with the lower rate of nitrate addition (100mgN kg–1 dry soil) and 35?2% with the higher rate (200mgN kg–1 dry soil) At the intermediate concentration ofNH3, the contributions to total plant N were 19?6% and 10?8%,respectively, at low and high nitrate while, at the lowest concentrationof NH3, they were 5?1% and 32%. Most of the N derived from theNH3 remained in the leaves, but some was transported to theroots. The amount of N derived from the NH3 that was presentin the leaves was not reduced by washing the leaves in waterat pH 5?0 before harvesting, indicating that the N was assimilatedby the plant and not adsorbed superficially. Rates of uptakeof NH3 per unit leaf area ranged from 1?7 µg dm–2h–1 at a concentration of 16 µg m–3 to 29?0µg dm–2 h–1 at a concentration of 520 µgm–3 and with the lower rate of nitrate addition. Increasingthe supply of nitrate to the roots slightly reduced the rateof uptake of NH3 per unit leaf area. Biochemical properties, i.e. endogenous abscisic acid, proline,sugars, respiration, adenosine phosphates and adenylate energycharge, and growth and moisture content were measured duringthe development of seeds of Machilus thunbergii. As dry matteraccumulated in the embryo during development, moisture content,ABA, proline, respiration and sugars all declined. At maturity,the dry mass of the seeds failed to attain a plateau beforethe period of natural seed shedding; the axis and cotyledonsreached moisture contents of 58 and 45%, respectively. Dryingof immature seeds at 73% relative humidity and 25 °C for30 d resulted in a complete loss of viability at all developmentalstages tested with the exception of mature seeds that were ableto tolerate a 5% decrease in moisture content before germinationdeclined. ABA was detected in all embryos tested, with a maximum value16.·16 µg g-1 d. wt about midway through development.Although the presence of ABA induced no tolerance to desiccationof mature seeds, it did coincide with decreased content of waterin the developing seeds and decreased respiration. Desiccationdamage of M. thunbergii seeds occurred when moisture contentwas still high (45%) and this damage was not related to theabsence of oligosaccharides in the mature seeds. We concludethat developing embryos and mature seeds of M. thunbergii haveproperties common to many recalcitrant seeds, with seeds beingsensitive to desiccation at all stages, having a prominent ABApeak, little proline, lacking oligosaccharides, and specifically,little dormancy and a moderate rate of respiration of matureseeds (0·9 µmol O2 min-1 g-1 f. wt). Adenosinetriphosphate content and energy charge decreased from stagefour to stage eight of seed development, then increased againto 103 nmol g-1 d. wt and 0·73, respectively, in matureseeds. The proportion of degradable dry weight in lamina of kikuyu,was estimated from an analysis of the rate of lamina senescencein dense swards when senescence was initiated by shading. Itwas assumed that laminae in the dark remained green until allenergy reserves, including degradable structural dry weight,were exhausted and then laminae died. The specific maintenancerespiration rate defined the rate of energy use. The estimatedproportion of degradable dry weight increased from 0.10 at 15°C to 0.18 at 30 °C, with corresponding specific maintenancerespiration rates of 10.9 and 37.0 mg d. wt (g d. wt)–1d–1 respectively. The introduction and repression of CAM in Sedurn telephiunmL, a temperate succulent, was investigated in watered, progressivelydrouglited and rewatered plants in growth chambers. Measurementswere made of water vapour and CO2 exchange, titratable acidity(TA) and xylem sap tension. Effects of photoperiod were alsostudied. CAM was induced by drought under long or short days,although when watered no CAM activity was expressed. C3-CAM intermediate plants were used for the investigation ofwater supply. Those which had received water and those drought-stressedboth displayed a similar nocturnal increase in TA, with a day-nightmaximum (H+) of 69 µmol g–1 fr. wt. The wateredplants took up CO2 at a maximum rate of 2?2 µmol m–2s–1 only in the light period, while the droughted plantsshowed a maximum nocturnal CO2 uptake rate of 0?69 µmolm–2 s–1. Subsequently, as CAM was repressed, thewatered S. telephiwn displayed little variation in TA, withconstant levels at 42 µmol g–1 fr. wt. (day 10).After 10 d of drought stress, the CAM characteristics of S.telephiurn were aLso affected, with reduced net CO2 uptake andH+. The transition between C3 and CAM in S. telephium can be describedas a progression in terms of the proportion of respiratory CO2which is recycled and refixed at night as malic acid, in comparisonwith net CO2 uptake. Recycling increased from 20% (day 1) to44% (day 10) as a result of the drought stress and was highin both the CAM-C3 stage (no net CO2 uptake at night) and alsoin the drought-stressed CAM stage (reduced net CO2 uptake atnight). The complete C3-CAM transition occurred in less than8 d, and the stages could be characterized by xylem sap tensionmeasurements: CAM = 0?50 MPa C3-CAM = 0?36 MPa C3 = 0?29 MPa. Five-month-old Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco)(CM) and Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkameriana Ten. and Pasq.)(VL) seedlings were grown in a glasshouse in 2·3-1 potsof Candler fine sand. Plants were irrigated with either non-saline(ECe = 0·23 dS m-1) or saline (6·13 dS m-1) waterusing 3:1 NaCl:CaCl2 solution over a 4-week period. A singleapplication of K15NO3 (19·64 atom % excess 15N) at 212mg N1-1, was substituted for a normal weekly fertilization after3 weeks and plants were harvested 7 d later. The transpirationrate, uptake of nitrogen, growth and nitrogen-use efficiency(NUE) on a dry weight basis (mg d. wt mg-1 N) of both specieswas reduced by salinity. Based on growth, water-use and chloride(Cl) accumulation in leaves, VL was more salt-sensitive thanCM, but 15N uptake was equally reduced by salinity in both species.Salinity reduced 15N uptake relatively more than shoot growthover the 7-d period, such that the 15NUE (mg d. wt µg-115N) of new shoot growth of both species increased. There wasno evidence of Cl antagonism of nitrate (NO3) uptake but totalplant 15NO3 uptake was positively correlated with whole planttranspiration in both species. Membrane-bound Mg++-activated ATPase was separated from thelower epidermis of tobacco leaves (Nicotiand tabacum L. SamsunNN) on stepwise sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Membrane-bound epidermal ATPase was localized in the interfaceof densities in sucrose of 1.12 to 1.16 in the sedimentary fractionbetween 1,500?g to 10,000?g from the homogenate of the lowerepidermis. The epidermal ATPase activity was activated by divalentcations (Mg++>Mn++Co++>Fe++>Zn++>Ca++) and furtherstimulated by KCl by ca. 20%. The pH optimum for Mg++-activationof the epidermal ATPase was ca. 6.0. The enzyme hydrolyzed ATPmore rapidly than other nucleoside triphosphates. The optimumtemperature for activation of the epidermal ATPase activitywas ca. 40?C. 50% of the epidermal ATPase activity was lostin 18 min at 55?C and in 2.5 days at 2.5?C. The apparent Kmvalue of the epidermal ATPase was 4.7?10–4 M and Vmaxwas 65.4 nmoles Pi/mg protein/min. The epidermal ATPase wasstrongly inhibited by N, N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD)in vitro whereas oligomycin, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone(CCGP), indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) wereinsensitive to the epidermal ATPase activity. The effects of salinity on growth, water relations, glycinebetainecontent, and ion accumulation in the perennial halophyte Atriplexgriffithii var. stocksii were determined. The following questionswere addressed: (1) What effect does salinity have on growthresponses at different ages? (2) Is A. griffithii an ion accumulator?(3) Does A. griffithii accumulate glycinebetaine in responseto salinity? Atriplex griffithii plants were grown in pots at0, 90, 180 and 360  m M NaCl in sand culture in a plantgrowth chamber and plants were harvested after 30, 60 and 90d. Plant total dry weight was significantly inhibited at 360m M NaCl. Root growth showed a substantial promotion at 90 mM NaCl. The water potential and osmotic potential of shootsbecame more negative with increasing salinity and time of growth.The Na+and Cl-content in both shoots and roots increased withincreases in salinity. Increased treatment levels of NaCl induceddecreases in Ca+, K+and Mg2+in plants. Atriplex griffithii accumulateda large quantity of ions, with the ash content reaching 39%of the dry weight in leaves. Inorganic ion accumulation is significantin osmotic adjustment and facilitates water uptake along a soil-plantgradient. Glycinebetaine concentration was low in roots, andin stems it increased with increases in salinity. The economy of carbon in nodulated white lupin (Lupinus albusL.) was studied in terms of consumption of net photosynthatein nitrogen fixation, in maintenance of respiration, and inthe production of dry matter and protein. Net photosynthesisrose to a maximum in early fruiting and then fell abruptly dueto shedding of leaves. Nodulated roots acquired translocateequivalent to 51% of the plant's net photosynthate, 78% of thecarbon of this translocate being respired, 10% entering drymatter, and 12% returning to the shoot attached to productsof nitrogen fixation. Nodules utilized 4?0–6?5 g C infixing 1 g nitrogen. Photosynthate was utilized most effectivelyfor nitrogen fixation in late vegetative growth. Fruits sequestered16% of the plant's net photosynthate, shoot night respiration17%, and dry matter formation in shoot vegetative parts 22%.Averaged over growth, 9?9 g net photosynthate was required toproduce 1 g seed dry matter and 31 g net photosynthate to produce1 g seed protein. Budgets for utilization of the carbon of netphotosynthate were constructed for 10 d intervals of the plant'sgrowth cycle. Feeding of shoots with 14CO2 resulted in radiocarbonbecoming partitioned approximately as predicted by these budgets.The dependence of root respiration on recent photosynthate wasassessed by following the time course of release of 14CO2 tothe rooting medium of the 14CO-labelled plants.  相似文献

An extract from the roots of Lotus pedunculatus plants was foundto contain a compound toxic towards fast-growing Lotus rhizobia.This compound was identified as a flavolan, which has a prodeiphinidin:procyanidin ratio of 75:25. A fast-growing strain of Rhizobium(NZP2213) which forms ineffective root nodules on L. pedunculatuswas four times more sensitive to this flavolan (ED50 = 25 ?gml–1) than another strain (NZP2037, ED50 = 100 ?g ml–1)which forms effective root nodules on this species. The rootsof another Lotus species, L. tenuis, on which both strains ofRhizobium form effective root nodules, also contained a flavolan( 95% procyanidin) but both strains were relatively insensitiveto this flavolan (EDED50 = 350 to 500 ?g ml–1) L. pedunculatusplants bearing ineffective root nodules contained two to threetimes more flavolan in their roots (5–7 mg g–1 fr.wt.)than uninoculated control plants. Experiments with seven otherLotus species and with hybrid plants developed between L. pedunculatusand L. tenuis showed a relationship between the prodeiphinidin:procyanidin ratio of the flavolan in their roots and the effectivenessof root nodules formed on these plants by NZP2213. Quantitativebinding studies of the flavolan from L. pedunculatus to NZP2037and NZP2213 indicated that, while the affinity constants forbinding were similar for both strains, the surface of strainNZP2037 contained four times more binding sites than NZP2213,possibly correlating with this strain's ability to toleratehigher concentrations of this flavolan. It is suggested thatthe differential sensitivity of these two strains of Rhizobiumto flavolans is related to their ability to form effective rootnodules on Lotus species.  相似文献
