In this study, the effects of organic loading rate (OLR) and the addition of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the performance and membrane fouling of MBR were conducted to treat real pharmaceutical process wastewater. Over 145 days of operation, the MBR system was operated at OLRs ranging from 1 to 2 kg COD m?3 day?1 without sludge wasting. The addition of PAC provided an improvement in the flux, despite an increase in the OLR:PAC ratio. The results demonstrated that the hybrid PAC-MBR system maintained a reduced amount of membrane fouling and steadily increased the removal performance of etodolac. PAC addition reduced the deposition of extracellular polymeric substance and organic matter on the membrane surface and resulted an increase in COD removal even at higher OLRs with low PAC addition. Membrane fouling mechanisms were investigated using combined adsorption fouling models. Modified fouling index values and normalized mass transfer coefficient values indicated that predominant fouling mechanism was cake adsorption.  相似文献

Background

Aerobic granular sludge has become an attractive alternative to the conventional activated sludge due to its high settling velocity, compact structure, and higher tolerance to toxic substances and adverse conditions. Aerobic granular sludge process has been studied intensively in the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. However, information on leachate treatment using aerobic granular sludge is very limited.

Methods

This study investigated the treatment performance of old landfill leachate with different levels of ammonium using two aerobic sequencing batch reactors (SBR): an activated sludge SBR (ASBR) and a granular sludge SBR (GSBR). Aerobic granules were successfully developed using old leachate with low ammonium concentration (136 mg L?1 NH4 +-N).

Results

The GSBR obtained a stable chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 70% after 15 days of operation; while the ASBR required a start-up of at least 30 days and obtained unstable COD removal varying from 38 to 70%. Ammonium concentration was gradually increased in both reactors. Increasing influent ammonium concentration to 225 mg L?1 N, the GSBR removed 73 ± 8% of COD; while COD removal of the ASBR was 59 ± 9%. The GSBR was also more efficient than the ASBR for nitrogen removal. The granular sludge could adapt to the increasing concentrations of ammonium, achieving 95 ± 7% removal efficiency at a maximum influent concentration of 465 mg L?1 N. Ammonium removal of 96 ± 5% was obtained by the ASBR when it was fed with a maximum of 217 mg L?1 NH4 +-N. However, the ASBR was partially inhibited by free-ammonia and nitrite accumulation rate increased up to 85%. Free-nitrous acid and the low biodegradability of organic carbon were likely the main factors affecting phosphorus removal.

Conclusion

The results from this research suggested that aerobic granular sludge have advantage over activated sludge in leachate treatment.

Membrane fouling currently makes filtration of high‐solids anaerobic sludges difficult and this is discouraging online monitoring of volatile fatty acids and control of high‐solids digesters. The present study tests the critical flux approach to reduce membrane fouling. Filtration tests are performed on two sludges, filtered via a side‐stream off two full‐scale digesters. Sub‐critical flux operating conditions (for minimal cake layer formation) are identified for each of the sludges and the filtration units are operated at these conditions to assess longer term performance. Results for one of the sludges (co‐digested primary and secondary sludge) is found to be encouraging, showing that sufficient flux rates (up to 40 L m?2 h?1) can be readily sustained to allow longer term digester monitoring and control. Filtration performance for this sludge did not deteriorate significantly over the test period. Results for the other test sludge (digested thermally hydrolyzed waste activated sludge) were not as favorable and indicated that application may be limited for very high solids digesters (>5% total solids concentration). Differences in filtration behavior for the two test sludges were ascribed to the presence of complex soluble organics, the concentration of sludge solids and their particle size. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. As biomanufacturers consider the transition from batch to continuous processing, it will be necessary to re-examine the design and operating conditions for many downstream processes. For example, the integration of virus removal filtration in continuous biomanufacturing will likely require operation at low and constant filtrate flux instead of the high (constant) transmembrane pressures (TMPs) currently employed in traditional batch processing. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of low operating filtrate flux (5–100 L/m2/h) on protein fouling during normal flow filtration of human serum Immunoglobulin G (hIgG) through the Viresolve® Pro membrane, including a direct comparison of the fouling behavior during constant-flux and constant-pressure operation. The filter capacity, defined as the volumetric throughput of hIgG solution at which the TMP increased to 30 psi, showed a distinct minimum at intermediate filtrate flux (around 20–30 L/m2/h). The fouling data were well-described using a previously-developed mechanistic model based on sequential pore blockage and cake filtration, suitably modified for operation at constant flux. Simple analytical expressions for the pressure profiles were developed in the limits of very low and high filtrate flux, enabling rapid estimation of the filter performance and capacity. The model calculations highlight the importance of both the pressure-dependent rate of pore blockage and the compressibility of the protein cake to the fouling behavior. These results provide important insights into the overall impact of constant-flux operation on the protein fouling behavior and filter capacity during virus removal filtration using the Viresolve® Pro membrane.  相似文献

Aerobic granulation is a promising technology for wastewater treatment, but problems regarding its formation and stability need to be solved. Divalent metal ions, especially Ca2+, Mg2+ and Mn2+, have been demonstrated to play an important role in the process of aerobic granulation. Here, we studied whether iron ions can affect aerobic granulation. Granular sludge formed without iron ion addition (<0.02 mg Fe2+ L?1) was fluffy and had a finger-type structure and filamentous out-growth. The addition of iron ions to concentrations of 1 and 10 mg Fe2+ L?1 repressed the finger-type structure and filamentous out-growth. The results show that chemical precipitation in the granules with iron ion addition was higher than that in the granules without ferrous addition. The amount of precipitates was higher inside the granules than outside. This study demonstrates that iron ions (Fe2+/Fe3+) increase the size and stability of aerobic granular sludge but do not affect the granulation time, which is the time that the first granular sludge is observed. The study shows that aerobic granular sludge technology can be confidently applied to actual wastewater containing a high concentration of iron compounds.  相似文献

This study evaluated the co-application of bacterial predation by Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus and either alum coagulation or powdered activated carbon adsorption to reduce fouling caused by Escherichia coli rich feed solutions in dead-end microfiltration tests. The flux increased when the samples were predated upon or treated with 100 ppm alum or PAC, but co-treatment with alum and predation gave the best flux results. The total membrane resistance caused by the predated sample was reduced six-fold when treated with 100 ppm PAC, from 11.8 to 1.98 × 1011 m?1, while irreversible fouling (Rp) was 2.7-fold lower. Treatment with 100 ppm alum reduced the total resistance 14.9-fold (11.8 to 0.79 × 1011 m?1) while the Rp decreased 4.25-fold. SEM imaging confirmed this, with less obvious fouling of the membrane after the combined process. This study illustrates that the combination of bacterial predation and the subsequent removal of debris using coagulation or adsorption mitigates membrane biofouling and improves membrane performance.  相似文献

The autotrophic process for nitrogen removal has attracted worldwide attention in the field of wastewater treatment, and the performance of this process is greatly influenced by the size of granular sludge particles present in the system. In this work, the granular sludge was divided into three groups, i.e. large size (>?1.2 mm), medium size (0.6–1.2 mm) and small size (<?0.6 mm). The medium granular sludge was observed to dominate at high volumetric nitrogen loading rates, while offering strong support for good performance. Its indispensable contribution was found to originate from improved settling velocity (0.84?±?0.10 cm/s), high SOUR-A (specific oxygen uptake rate for ammonia oxidizing bacteria, 25.93 mg O2/g MLVSS/h), low SOUR-N (specific oxygen uptake rate for nitrite oxidizing bacteria, 3.39 mg O2/g MLVSS/h), and a reasonable microbial spatial distribution.  相似文献

Aerobic granule was successfully cultivated in SBR (sequencing batch reactor) by struvite carrier (magnesium ammonium phosphate, MgNH4PO4), which can increase polysaccharides to 42.2 mg/gMLVSS (mixed liquor volatile suspended solid) versus only 28.4 mg/gMLVSS of the sludge without it. Meanwhile, it was found that struvite play a positive role in initial granulation and bacterial group distribution in treating pharmaceutical wastewater, involving effect of solid surface and special contents of struvite. The results of fluorescence in situ hybridization technique indicate that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria can dominate over nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in mature granules. COD removal efficiency of 90 % and NO2 ?–N:(NO2 ?–N?+?NO3 ?–N) accumulation efficiency of 89 % were achieved in stable state. Emphasis is placed on that struvite addition can be applied as a new-type carrier to promote formation of partial nitrification granular sludge.  相似文献

The Gallery forests of the Cerrado biome play a critical role in controlling stream chemistry but little information about biogeochemical processes in these ecosystems is available. This work describes the fluxes of N and P in solutions along a topographic gradient in a gallery forest. Three distinct floristic communities were identified along the gradient: a wet community nearest the stream, an upland dry community adjacent to the woodland savanna and an intermediate community between the two. Transects were marked in the three communities for sampling. Fluxes of N from bulk precipitation to these forests resulted in deposition of 12.6 kg ha?1 y?1 of total N of which 8.8 kg ha?1 was as inorganic N. The throughfall flux of total N was generally <8.4 kg ha?1 year?1. Throughfall NO3?CN fluxes were higher (7?C32%) while NH4?CN and organic N fluxes were lower (54?C69% and 5?C46%) than those in bulk precipitation. The throughfall flux was slightly lower for the wet forest community compared to other communities. Litter leachate fluxes differed among floristic communities with higher NH4?CN in the wet community. The total N flux was greater in the wet forest than in the dry forest (13.5 vs. 9.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively). The stream water had total N flux of 0.3 kg ha?1 year?1. The flux of total P through bulk precipitation was 0.7 kg ha?1 year?1 while the mean fluxes of total P in throughfall (0.6 kg ha?1 year?1) and litter leachate (0.5 kg ha?1 year?1) declined but did not differ between communities. The low concentrations presented in soil solution and low fluxes in stream water (0.3 and 0.1 kg ha?1 year?1 for N and P, respectively) relative to other flowpaths emphasize the conservative nutrient cycling of these forests and the importance of internal recycling processes for the maintenance and conservation of riparian and stream ecosystems in the Cerrado.  相似文献

Denitrifying granular sludge reactor holds better nitrogen removal efficiency than other kinds of denitrifying reactors, while this reactor commonly needs seeding anaerobic granular sludge and longer period for start-up in practice, which restricted the application of denitrifying granular sludge reactor. This study presented a rapid and stable start-up method for denitrifying granular sludge. An upflow sludge blanket (USB) reactor with packings was established with flocculent activated sludge for treatment of high concentration nitrite wastewater. Results showed mature denitrifying granular sludge appeared only after 15 days with highest nitrogen removal rate of 5.844 kg N/(m3 day), which was much higher than that of compared anoxic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). No significant nitrite inhibition occurred in USB and denitrification performance was mainly influenced by hydraulic retention time, influent C/N ratio and internal reflux ratio. Hydraulic shear force created by upflow fluid, shearing of gaseous products and stable microorganisms adhesion on the packings might be the reasons for rapid achievement of granular sludge. Compared to inoculated sludge and ASBR, remarkable microbial communitiy variations were detected in USB. The dominance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes and enrichment of species Pseudomonas_stutzeri should be responsible for the excellent denitrification performance, which further verified the feasibility of start-up method.  相似文献

The effects of low-concentration Cr(VI) (0.4 mg?l?1) on the performance of a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) in the treatment of municipal wastewater, as well as membrane fouling were investigated. Compared with the SMBR for control municipal wastewater, the SMBR for Cr(VI)-containing municipal wastewater had a higher concentration of soluble microbial products (SMP) with lower molecular weights, and smaller sludge particle sizes. Furthermore, low-concentration Cr(VI) induced membrane fouling, especially irreversible membrane pore blocking, which markedly shortened the service life of the membrane.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effective utilization of tannery sludge for cultivation of clarysage (Salvia sclarea) at CIMAP research farm, Lucknow, India during the year 2012–2013. Six doses (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 tha?1) of processed tannery sludge were tested in randomised block design with four replications. Results revealed that maximum shoot, root, dry matter and oil yield were obtained with application of 80 tha?1of tannery sludge and these were 94, 113 and 61% higher respectively, over control. Accumulation of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Fe, Pb) were relatively high in shoot portion of the plant than root. Among heavy metals, magnitude of chromium accumulation was higher than nickel, iron and lead in shoot as well as in root. Linalool, linalyl acetate and sclareol content in oil increased by 13,8 and 27% respectively over control, with tannery sludge application at 80 tha?1. Heavy metals such as chromium, cadmium and lead content reduced in postharvest soil when compared to initial status. Results indicated that clarysage (Salvia sclarea) can be grown in soil amended with 80 tha?1sludge and this can be a suitable accumulator of heavy metals for phytoremediation of metal polluted soils.  相似文献

In ruminants, gastrointestinal recycling of urea is acutely enhanced by fibre-rich diets that lead to high ruminal concentration of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), while high ammonia has inhibitory effects. This study attempted to clarify if urea flux to the porcine cecum is similarly regulated. Thirty-two weaned piglets were fed diets containing protein (P) of poor prececal digestibility and fibre (F) at high (H) or low levels (L) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. After slaughter, cecal content was analyzed and the cecal mucosa incubated in Ussing chambers to measure the effect of pH, SCFA and NH4 + on the flux rates of urea, short-circuit current (I sc) and tissue conductance (G t). NH4 + significantly enhanced I sc (from 0.5 ± 0.2 to 1.2 ± 0.1 μEq cm?2 h?1). No acute effects of SCFA or ammonia on urea flux were observed. Tissue conductance was significantly lower in the high dietary fibre groups irrespective of the protein content. Only the HP-LF group emerged as different from all others in terms of urea flux (74 ± 6 versus 53 ± 3 nmol cm?2 h?1), associated with higher cecal ammonia concentration and reduced fecal consistency. The data suggest that as in the rumen, uptake of ammonia by the cecum may involve electrogenic transport of the ionic form (NH4 +). In contrast to findings in the rumen, neither a high fibre diet nor acute addition of SCFA enhanced urea transport across the pig cecum. Instead, a HP-LF diet had stimulatory effects. A potential role for urea recycling in stabilizing luminal pH is discussed.  相似文献

We evaluated the nighttime CO2 flux (ecosystem respiration) on Rishiri Island, located at the northern tip of Hokkaido, Japan, from 2009 to 2011, by using the relationship between atmospheric 222Rn and CO2 concentrations. The annual mean CO2 flux was 1.8 μmol m?2 s?1, with a maximum monthly mean in July (4.6 ± 2.6 μmol m?2 s?1) and a broad minimum from December to March (0.33 ± 0.29 μmol m?2 s?1). The annual mean was comparable to fluxes at the JapanFlux sites in northern Japan. During the season of snow cover (mid-December to early April), the CO2 flux was low (0.45 ± 0.43 μmol m?2 s?1). Total annual respiration was estimated at 679 ± 174 g cm?2, about 8 % of which occurred during the season of snow cover.  相似文献

The downstream process development of novel antibodies (Abs) is often challenged by virus filter fouling making a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms highly desirable. The present study combines the protein characterization of different feedstreams with their virus filtration performance using a novel high throughput filtration screening system. Filtration experiments with Ab concentrations of up to 20 g/L using either low interacting or hydrophobically interacting pre-filters indicate the existence of two different fouling mechanisms, an irreversible and a reversible one. At the molecular level, size exclusion chromatography revealed that the presence of large amount of high molecular weight species—considered as irreversible aggregates—correlates with irreversible fouling that caused reduced Ab throughput. Results using dynamic light scattering show that a concentration dependent increase of the mean hydrodynamic diameter to the range of dimers (17 nm at 20 g/L) together with a negative DLS interaction parameter kD (−18 mL/g) correlate with the propensity to form reversible aggregates and to cause reversible fouling, probably by a decelerated Ab transport velocity within the virus filter. The two fouling mechanisms are further supported by buffer flush experiments. Finally, concepts for reversible and irreversible fouling mechanisms are discussed together with strategies for respective fouling mitigation. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. This paper investigates the removal of isopropanol by gas-phase biotrickling filtration. Two plastic packing materials, one structured and one random, have been evaluated in terms of oxygen mass transfer and isopropanol removal efficiency. Oxygen mass transfer experiments were performed at gas velocities of 104 and 312 m h?1 and liquid velocities between 3 and 33 m h?1. Both materials showed similar mass transfer coefficients up to liquid velocities of 15 m h?1. At greater liquid velocities, the structured packing exhibited greater oxygen mass transfer coefficients. Biotrickling filtration experiments were carried out at inlet loads (IL) from 20 to 65 g C m?3 h?1 and empty bed residence times (EBRT) from 14 to 160 s. To simulate typical industrial emissions, intermittent isopropanol loading (16 h/day, 5 day/week) and intermittent spraying frequency (15 min/1.5 h) were applied. Maximum elimination capacity of 51 g C m?3 h?1 has been obtained for the random packing (IL of 65 g C m?3 h?1, EBRT of 50 s). The decrease in irrigation frequency to 15 min every 3 h caused a decrease in the outlet emissions from 86 to 59 mg C Nm?3 (inlet of 500 mg C Nm?3). The expansion of spraying to night and weekend periods promoted the degradation of the isopropanol accumulated in the water tank during the day, reaching effluent concentrations as low as 44 mg C Nm?3. After a 7-week starvation period, the performance was recovered in less than 10 days, proving the robustness of the process.  相似文献

The flux variations and resistances accumulated during filtration of activated sludge with sludge retention time (SRT) of 15, 30, and 60 days were analyzed to investigate the dynamic fouling behavior in a submerged nonwoven bioreactor. Different SRT values varied sludge condition and particle size distribution in the supernatants, which caused dissimilar fouling characteristics. Short-term fouling of the nonwoven bioreactor during filtration of activated sludge with SRT of 15 days was fully reversible, and the resistance percentages of solutes, colloids, and suspended solids were 6%, 27%, and 67%, respectively. On the other hand, significant increases of colloid resistance, such as with the filtration of activated sludge with SRT of 30 and 60 days, were related to the occurrence of irreversible fouling. The phenomenon of pore blocking by particles or colloids with size analogous to the pore of nonwoven fabric was a decisive factor leading to irreversible fouling in the large-pore materials.  相似文献

The potential impact of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on nitrogen removal from wastewater in activated sludge was investigated using a sequencing batch reactor. The addition of 2–50 mg L?1 of TiO2 NPs did not adversely affect nitrogen removal. However, when the activated sludge was exposed to 100–200 mg L?1 of TiO2 NPs, the effluent total nitrogen removal efficiencies were 36.5 % and 20.3 %, respectively, which are markedly lower than the values observed in the control test (80 %). Further studies showed that the decrease in biological nitrogen removal induced by higher concentrations of TiO2 NPs was due to an inhibitory effect on the de-nitrification process. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles showed that 200 mg L?1 of TiO2 NPs significantly reduced microbial diversity in the activated sludge. The effect of light on the antibacterial activity of TiO2 NPs was also investigated, and the results showed that the levels of TiO2-dependent inhibition of biological nitrogen removal were similar under both dark and light conditions. Additional studies revealed that different TiO2 concentrations had a significant effect on dehydrogenase activity, and this effect was most likely the result of decreased microbial activity.  相似文献

An anaerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (AnSMBR) treating low-strength wastewater was operated for 90 days under psychrophilic temperature conditions (20 °C). Besides biogas sparging, additional shear was created by circulating sludge to control membrane fouling. The critical flux concept was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this configuration. Biogas sparging with a gas velocity (UG) of 62 m/h together with sludge circulation (94 m/h) led to a critical flux of 7 L/(m2 h). Nevertheless, a further increase in the UG only minimally enhanced the critical flux. A low fouling rate was observed under critical flux conditions. The cake layer represented the main fouling resistance after 85 days of operation. Distinctly different volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in the reactor and in the permeate were always observed. This fact suggests that a biologically active part of the cake layer contributes to degrade a part of the daily organic load. Hence, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of up to 94% were observed. Nevertheless, the biogas balance indicates that even considering the dissolved methane, the methane yield were always lower than the theoretical value, which indicates that the organic compounds were not completely degraded but physically retained by the membrane in the reactor.  相似文献

To reduce power consumption and enhance algal biomass productivity in a thin flat-plate bioreactor (called a sliver tank bioreactor), flashing (pulsing) light was used. Biomass productivity and power consumption were monitored in controlled experiments using various photon flux levels, including a constant (non-flashing) flux of 75 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and three flashing experiments with photon fluxes of 375, 275, and 175 μmol photons m?2 s?1. Flashing experiments were performed at 10 kHz and a duty cycle of 20 %. A sliver tank bioreactor with a chamber width of 6.4 mm was used for its short optical path. Data from the experiments where light was flashed with a photon flux of 375 μmol photons m?2 s?1 indicated 9.6 % less power and 2.86 times the biomass productivity compared to the constant photon flux experiments. Similar results were obtained for the other flashing light regimes, which had lower biomass yields but also less input power per unit biomass produced, indicating that a large fraction of the continuously applied photons are shed or wasted, even at levels approximately 1/30th the intensity of full sun.  相似文献
