Underdominance for chromosomal rearrangements is the central assumption of several models of chromosomally based speciation including the cascade model, proposed for the Sceloporus grammicus complex. Several cytotypes of the S. grammicus complex hybridize at localities in central México. A hybrid zone between two of the most chromosomally divergent races (= cytotypes) of S. grammicus (F5, 2n = 34 and FM2, 2n = 44–46) was examined to assess the meiotic effects of heterozygosity at multiple chromosomes. Meiosis was examined in males heterozygous for “simple” Robertsonian fissions at chromosomes 1, 3, 4, and 6 and/or a pericentric inversion at chromosome 4. Analysis of synaptonemal complexes and chromosomal configurations at diakinesis showed trivalent formation in fission heterozygotes and heterosynapsis (lack of reverse-loop formation) in an inversion heterozygote. Analysis of metaphase II configurations revealed primarily balanced segregation and low levels of nondisjunction regardless of chromosomal background. The lack of underdominance associated with “simple” fission heterozygosity in this narrow hybrid zone contradicts the key premise of most chromosomally based models of speciation.  相似文献

We present results from a screen for de novo variable nuclear loci using a genomic library approach in Sceloporus undulatus, the eastern fence lizard. We tested amplification success for 77 primer pairs in S. undulatus, Sceloporus occidentalis and Sceloporus grammicus. Many loci amplified in all three species suggesting that our primers will be useful for developing sequencing or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping markers in other sceloporine lizards. We also sequenced 19 loci, containing 158 variable sites, for 91 S. undulatus individuals. We report high levels of nucleotide variation in this species with an average of 38 SNPs per kilobase.  相似文献

Sceloporus grammicus has been used as an example of stasipatric speciation, and some models of chromosomal speciation have assumed that the fission rearrangements which distinguish the chromosome races within this complex are negatively heterotic in the heterozygous state. Consequently, such rearrangements are assumed to be fixed by drift in small, inbred populations. Allelic variation at 19 presumptive gene loci was examined in 13 samples of a chromosomally conservative congener, Sceloporus graciosus, and was compared to an equivalent data set for the chromosomally polytypic S. grammicus. Several estimates of population variability and structure were calculated, and results were inconsistent with models of extreme population subdivision and/or frequent bottlenecks and extinction-colonization events in S. grammicus. For example, mean level of heterozygosity and mean number of alleles per locus were significantly higher in S. grammicus than in S. graciosus, while the average genetic distance (D) was significantly higher in S. graciosus. These results are considered in light of expected “Wrightian” population genetic parameters, and we conclude that S. grammicus does not seem to have the population structure necessary for the fixation of strongly negatively heterotic rearrangements.  相似文献

Several chromosome races of the mesquite lizard, Sceloporus grammicus complex, hybridize at localities in central Mexico. In most cases, the hybridizing populations are delineated by centric fissions at one or more of the macrochromosomes. One notable exception is the Tulancingo hybrid zone between the F5 and FM2 cytotypes. In addition to fission and/or inversion differences at chromosomes 1, 3, 4, and 6, these races differ by a complex rearrangement of chromosome 2, which carries the nucleolus-organizer region in this species. The meiotic consequences of heterozygosity at this chromosome were examined in males to assess the potential for this chromosome to contribute to the dynamics of the hybrid zone. Chromosomal analysis revealed several putative F1 hybrids and confirmed the production of nonparental chromosomal morphologies through recombination. Pachytene analysis revealed meiotic pairing difficulties associated with chromosome 2 in males heterozygous for the parental chromosomal morphologies. Significant aneuploidy is expected because of random disjunction of the chromosome-2 elements. As a result, these males likely suffer reduced fertiliity and fitness. In contrast, males heterozygous for recombinant chromosomal morphologies displayed low levels of meiotic irregularities and presumably exhibit higher fertility than individuals heterozygous for parental morphologies. It is hypothesized that the recombinant phenotypes facilitate gene flow between the F5 and FM2 cytotypes.  相似文献

Among specimens of the spectacled hare-wallaby Lagorchestes conspicillatus Gould (Marsupialia, family Macropodidae) 4 males had 15 chromosomes and 2 females 16 chromosomes. The sex chromosomes are X1X1X2X2 in the female and X1X2Y in the male, the Y being metacentric and both X chromosomes are acrocentric. In about 96% of sperm mother cells at meiosis the sex chromosomes form a chain trivalent and in more than 99% of these this orients convergently so that the X1 and X2 move to the same pole. Evidence is presented that L. conspicillatus has evolved from a form with 22 chromosomes including a small X and a minute Y. Autoradiographic studies show that the proximal fifth of the X1 chromosome replicates late. This is probably the ancestral X chromosome which has been translocated to an autosome. The fate of the original Y is obscure but an hypothesis is proposed that it forms the centromeric region of the Y. A single male had 14 chromosomes and was heterozygous for a translocation involving the centric fusion of two acrocentric autosomes. In about 30% of sperm mother cells the autosomal trivalent did not disjoin regularly but, despite this, all secondary spermatocytes observed at metaphase 2 had balanced complements of chromosomes. It is assumed that unbalanced secondary spermatocytes died before reaching metaphase.  相似文献

Summary We studied aspects of the thermal biology and microhabitat selection of the endangered lizard Podarcis hispanica atrata during autumn in the field and laboratory. Body temperatures (T b ) of active lizards were within a narrow range, were largely independent of ambient temperatures, and exhibited little diel variation. Activity T b s largely coincided with the selected temperatures maintained in a laboratory thermogradient and with T b s that maximize running performance. Alternation of basking with other activities and shuttling between sun and shade were obvious aspects of thermoregulatory behaviour. Lizards shifted microhabitat use throughout the day. During early morning and late afternoon, basking lizards were restricted to rocky sites surrounded by shrubs. Near midday lizards used a wider array of microhabitats, and many moved in open grassy sites. Juveniles maintained lower activity T b s, had lower selected temperatures, and basked less frequently than the adults. Juveniles occupied open grassy patches more often than the adults. We discuss the relevance of our results for the conservation of this extremely rare lizard and the management of its habitats.  相似文献

The Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum), a state threatened species in Texas, USA, appears to be declining throughout much of its distribution. Because of popular interest in restoring lizard populations, we conducted a 3-year radio-telemetric study to evaluate the feasibility of reintroducing Texas horned lizards into previously occupied areas with suitable habitat characteristics. We translocated lizards from natural populations in western Texas to the McGillivray and Leona McKie Muse Wildlife Management Area (MWMA) in the Cross Timbers and Prairies of north-central Texas, an ecoregion that has experienced apparent local extirpations of horned lizards. We translocated lizards after partly restoring a 32.5-ha portion of the MWMA from ashe juniper (Juniperus ashei)-honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) woodland to mid-grass prairie. After a 10-day acclimation period and soft release, we tracked 57 horned lizards from March 2014 to October 2016 to evaluate daily movements, spatial use, sources of mortality, reproduction, and changes in body condition. Daily movement averages (1.16–174.18 m) and area used by individuals (<0.01–6.81 ha) were similar to those recorded for natural populations, with peaks in movement occurring in May and June. Annual survivorship for individuals (1.1–47.2%) was also similar to that reported from natural populations; however, survivorship declined across the 3 active seasons. Although mortality of translocated lizards was high, body condition remained relatively stable across active seasons, and reproduction occurred each year, indicating that translocation could be a viable option for restoring horned lizard populations to previously occupied parts of their range. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The Australian lizard, Egernia striolata, can distinguish its own scats from those of unfamiliar conspecific individuals. This appears to be unrelated to diet, because there is no difference in the response to scats from unfamiliar lizards fed on diets that are the same or different from the test lizard. The signal that induces the response is not a visual or tactile property of scat structure, because test lizards respond equally to crushed and intact scats. We suggest that a pheromone is secreted onto the scat as it is produced. Water solutions of scats did not contain signal components that allowed lizards to distinguish their own scats from others. However, solutions of scats in dichloromethane (DCM) retained unique characteristics, and test lizards responded more strongly to the solution from scats of an unfamiliar lizard that to the solution from their own scats. Further fractionation of the DCM solution in pentane and in methanol led to loss of the unique signals needed for individual recognition, but those were restored when the pentane and methanol fractions were recombined. We infer that these lizards can distinguish between scats of different individuals on the basis of signals they receive from a complex combination of chemicals. Administration (ip) of FSH (10 IU/0.1 ml distilled water (dw)/lizard/alternate days/30 days) to adult male lizards, Mabuya carinata, during the early recrudescence phase of the reproductive cycle caused activation of spermatogenic and steroidogenic activity of the testis, as shown by a significant increase in mean number of spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes and spermatids, and serum levels of testosterone, as compared to initial controls. In addition, there were abundant spermatozoa in the lumen of the seminiferous tubules. Interestingly, administration of a similar dosage of FSH to lizards exposed to stressors (handling, chasing, and noise randomly applied, five times a day for 30 days) resulted in a significant increase in mean number of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes over initial control values, whereas the number of secondary spermatocytes and spermatids and serum levels of testosterone did not significantly differ from those of initial controls, and were significantly lower than FSH treated normal lizards. Further, spermatozoa were infrequently found in the seminiferous tubules of these lizards. Treatment controls (receiving 0.1 ml dw/lizard/alternate days for 30 days) did not show significant variation in mean number of spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids, and serum levels of testosterone from initial controls. Another group of lizards was exposed to stressors and did not receive FSH. These lizards showed a significant decrease in mean number of secondary spermatocytes compared to treatment controls and all other parameters did not significantly differ from those of both control groups. The results reveal that gonadotrophin-induced spermatogonial proliferation occurs under stressful conditions, whereas progress of spermatogenesis beyond primary spermatocyte stage is impaired due to inhibition (under stress) of gonadotrophin induced steroidogenic activity in M. carinata.  相似文献

Lateralization is the function specialization between left and right brain hemispheres. It is now ascertained in ectotherms too, where bias in eye use for different tasks, i.e., visual lateralization, is widespread. The lateral eye position on the head of ectotherm animals, in fact, allows them to observe left/right stimuli independently and allows lateralized individuals to carry out left and right perceived tasks at the same time. A recent study conducted on common wall lizards, Podarcis muralis, showed that lizards predominantly monitor a predator with the left eye while escaping. However, this work was conducted in a controlled laboratory setting owing to the difficulty of carrying out lateralization experiments under natural conditions. Nevertheless, field studies could provide important information to support what was previously found in the laboratory and demonstrate that these traits occur in nature. In this study, we conducted a field study on the antipredatory behavior of P. muralis lizards. We simulated predatory attacks on lizards in their natural environment. We found no lateralization in the measure of eye used by the lizard to monitor the predator before escaping from it, but the eye used was probably determined by the relative position of the lizard and the predator just before the attack. This first eye used did not affect escape decisions; lizards chose to escape toward the nearest refuge irrespective of whether it was located to the lizard’s left or right side. However, once they had escaped to a refuge, lizards had a left eye–mediated bias to monitor the predator when first emerging from the refuge, and this bias was likely independent of other environmental variables. Hence, these field findings support a left eye–mediated observation of the predator in P. muralis lizards, which confirms previous findings in this and other species.  相似文献

The interaction of immature black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, with reptiles and rodents was investigated in various woodland habitats in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Reptiles were sampled from April 1 to September 30, 1991. No ticks were found on 95 specimens representing 16 species of snakes. Ticks were found on 54 (36.7%) of 147 lizards. I. scapularis was the only tick recovered from lizards. Some lizards were collected in drift fence traps each month of the study except August. Capture rates averaged one lizard per 16 trap-days. Larvac and nymphs of I. scapularis were removed from the southeastern five-lined skink (Eumeces inexpectatus), the ground skink (Scincella lateralis), the broad-headed skink (E. laticeps) and the eastem glass lizard (Ophisaurus ventralis), but ticks were not found on three other lizard species. Tick infestation rates and loads for parasitized species are presented. Ticks were almost exlusively attached at the base or in the axils of forelimbs of skinks and in the lateral grooves of eastern glass lizards. Rodents were live-trapped at sites where lizards were sampled and at other sites from 1 July, 1990 to 30 January, 1992. Capture rates averaged one rodent per 47 trap-nights. Ticks were found on 23 (17.8%) of 129 animals inspected. Five species of rodents were examined but only four species were found to be tick-infested. In contrast to lizards, few I. scapularis were collected. Rodents, principally the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) and cotton mouse (P. gossypinus) were most frequently infested with immature American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, during winter and early spring months. Burdens of D. variabilis on these rodents averaged 0.3 ticks per rodent. Effects of the diversion of ticks from feeding on Peromyscus mice on the transmission of the Lyme disease spirochete are discussed. The use of trade names in this publication does not imply an endorsement by the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service or the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University of the products named, nor criticism of similar ones not mentioned. Aim In an effort to disentangle the ecological processes that confine ectotherms to alpine environments, we studied the thermoregulatory and microhabitat selection behaviours of the rock lizard Iberolacerta cyreni, which is endemic to some mountains of central Spain, and of the wall lizard Podarcis muralis, which is a potential competitor of rock lizards. Location We chose three areas in the Sierra de Guadarrama (central Spain) that differed in their thermal quality [mean deviation of environmental operative temperatures from the lizards’ preferred thermal range (PTR)] and refuge availability: a pine forest (1770 m a.s.l.) in which P. muralis was the only species found, and two mixed shrub and rock sites (1770 and 1900 m a.s.l.) where both species were present. Methods In the field we collected data on refuge availability, sun exposure, body temperature (Tb) and operative temperature (Te). Thus, we estimated the thermal habitat quality of the areas sampled and the thermoregulation accuracy and effectiveness of both species. Results The pine forest had the lowest thermal quality and refuge availability. The lower‐elevation shrub site offered the best thermal quality, but refuges were much scarcer than at the higher‐elevation site. Both species thermoregulated accurately, because mean deviations of body temperature (Tb) from PTR were considerably smaller than those of Te. Podarcis muralis had higher Tb values than did I. cyreni, which had similar Tb values at both shrub sites, whereas P. muralis had lower Tb values at higher elevation. Overall, the thermoregulatory effectiveness (extent to which Tb values are closer to the PTR than are Te values) of both species was similar, but whereas I. cyreni thermoregulated more efficiently at higher elevation, the opposite was true for P. muralis. At the lower‐elevation shrub site, I. cyreni remained closer to refuges than did P. muralis. Main conclusions Our results suggest that the pine forest belt might prevent the expansion of rock lizards towards lower elevations as a result of its low thermal quality and scarcity of refuges, that the thermoregulatory effectiveness of rock lizards in alpine environments depends more on refuge availability than on thermal habitat quality, and that competition with wall lizards is unlikely to explain either the distribution or the thermoregulatory effectiveness of rock lizards.  相似文献

In developed countries deafness has a genetic cause in over 60% of the cases. Contrastingly, in Brazil, it is estimated that only 16% of all deafnesses are caused by genetic factors. Among hereditary hearing deficiencies, approximately half is caused by mutations in the Gap Junction Protein Beta-2 (GJB2) gene, which encodes the protein Connexin 26 (Cx26). There are four mutations in this gene that present high prevalence in specific ethnical groups, namely, 35delG, 167delT, 235delC, and W24X. The 35delG mutation is the most frequent one, occurring in homozygosity or in compound heterozygosity with mutations in the GJB2 and GJB6 genes. This study aims to determine the prevalence of GJB2-35delG, GJB2-167delT, GJB2-235delC, GJB2-W24X, del (GJB6-D13S1830), and del (GJB6-D13S1854) mutations in patients with nonsyndromic deafness in the Espirito Santo State, Brazil. A total of 77 individuals were evaluated, from which 88.3% presented normal genotypes for all analyzed mutations, 1.3% were compound heterozygotes for 35delG-GJB2/D13S1830-GJB6, 1.3% were compound heterozygotes for 35delG/D13S1854-GJB6, 3.9% were homozygotes for the 35delG mutation and 5.2% were heterozygotes for 35delG/GJB2. The frequency of mutant alleles 35delG/GJB2, del (D13S1830/GJB6), and del (D13S1854/GJB6) was 7.8, 0.65, and 0.65%, respectively. Mutations 167delT, 235delC, and W24X were not detected. Determining the prevalence of specific mutations related to inherited deafness in a population can contribute to the development of more efficient and affordable molecular diagnostic protocols, and help in the genetic counseling of patients and their families.  相似文献

A chromosomal centric fusion polymorphism in populations of the plains pocket gopher, Geomys bursarius, was studied to determine the relative fitness associated with the karyotypic phenotypes. There was a greater number of heterozygous individuals than expected χ1 2=8.58, P=0.001. Calculations indicate that the viabilities of the two chromosomal homozygotes were only 35 and 76 percent or that of the heterozygote. Differences in fitness values for the chromosomal morphs for Geomys strongly emphasize the possible adaptive nature of the karyotype and provides a primary mechanism for chromosomal evolution, even in species composed of demes of relatively large size. This is the first case of positive chromosomal heterosis in vertebrates. The plains pocket gopher can now be added to the few empirically documented samples of balanced polymorphism.

New technologies for quantifying animal locations enable us to document habitat‐selection patterns of cryptic taxa in extraordinary detail. Northern bluetongues (Tiliqua scincoides intermedia) and centralian bluetongues (Tiliqua multifasciata) are large heavy‐bodied scincid lizards that are broadly sympatric in the wet–dry tropics of north‐western Australia. We used data from GPS‐based radiotelemetry (n = 49 lizards, tracked for 2–121 days, total n = 61 640 locations) to examine the size, internal structure and overlap of lizard home ranges. Despite substantial habitat differences at our two study sites (semi‐arid and relatively pristine habitat at Keep River National Park, Northern Territory, vs. highly disturbed and fragmented flood plain habitat in an agricultural area near Kununurra, Western Australia), home ranges were similar between the two areas, and between the two species. Our radio‐tracked lizards continued to disperse into previously unused areas throughout the duration of the study, so that the total areas used by lizards continued to increase. Based on the minimum convex polygon method, total home ranges averaged 4 ha (range 2–12 ha), but only about two‐thirds of each home range was used intensively. Each home range had multiple core areas, and overlap of core as well as peripheral areas (especially with same‐sex conspecifics) was high at the disturbed (Western Australia) site where lizard densities were high. The concentration of lizard activity within small core areas, often used by multiple individuals, suggests that these heavily used sites are critical to lizard conservation. However, the lizards' infrequent long‐distance displacements also make them vulnerable to changes in the wider landscape mosaic. Because GPS‐based radiotelemetry can quantify habitat use at finer spatial and temporal scales than earlier technologies, it can provide a robust base for management of at‐risk fauna.  相似文献

The usage of invasive tagging methods to assess lizard populations has often been criticised, due to the potential negative effects of marking, which possibly cause increased mortality or altered behaviour. The development of safe, less invasive techniques is essential for improved ecological study and conservation of lizard populations. In this study, we describe a photographic capture-recapture (CR) technique for estimating Draco dussumieri (Agamidae) populations. We used photographs of the ventral surface of the patagium to identify individuals. To establish that the naturally occurring blotches remained constant through time, we compared capture and recapture photographs of 45 pen-marked individuals after a 30 day interval. No changes in blotches were observed and individual lizards could be identified with 100% accuracy. The population density of D. dussumieri in a two hectare areca-nut plantation was estimated using the CR technique with ten sampling occasions over a ten day period. The resulting recapture histories for 24 individuals were analysed using population models in the program CAPTURE. All models indicated that nearly all individuals were captured. The estimated probability for capturing D. dussumieri on at least one occasion was 0.92 and the estimated population density was 13±1.65 lizards/ha. Our results demonstrate the potential for applying CR to population studies in gliding lizards (Draco spp.) and other species with distinctive markings.  相似文献

Rineloricaria is the most diverse genus within the freshwater fish subfamily Loricariinae, and it is widely distributed in the Neotropical region. Despite limited cytogenetic data, records from southern and south-eastern Brazil suggest a high rate of chromosomal rearrangements in this genus, mirrored in remarkable inter- and intraspecific karyotype variability. In the present work, we investigated the karyotype features of Rineloricaria teffeana, an endemic representative from northern Brazil, using both conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques. We revealed different diploid chromosome numbers (2n) between sexes (33♂/34♀), which suggests the presence of an ♀X1X1X2X2/♂X1X2Y multiple sex chromosome system. The male-limited Y chromosome was the largest and the only biarmed element in the karyotype, implying Y-autosome fusion as the most probable mechanism behind its origination. C-banding revealed low amounts of constitutive heterochromatin, mostly confined to the (peri)centromeric regions of most chromosomes (including the X2 and the Y) but also occupying the distal regions of a few chromosomal pairs. The chromosomal localization of the 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clusters revealed a single site on chromosome pair 4, which was adjacent to the 5S rDNA cluster. Additional 5S rDNA loci were present on the autosome pair 8, X1 chromosome, and in the presumed fusion point on the Y chromosome. The probe for telomeric repeat motif (TTAGGG)n revealed signals of variable intensities at the ends of all chromosomes except for the Y chromosome, where no detectable signals were evidenced. Male-to-female comparative genomic hybridization revealed no sex-specific or sex-biased repetitive DNA accumulations, suggesting a presumably low level of neo-Y chromosome differentiation. We provide evidence that rDNA sites might have played a role in the formation of this putative multiple sex chromosome system and that chromosome fusions originate through different mechanisms among different Rineloricaria species.  相似文献

The lizard genus Sceloporus contains both oviparous and viviparous species. The scalaris complex is the only monophyletic group within the genus that includes both reproductive modes, thus it is particularly well suited for studies of the evolution of viviparity. Approximately 874 nucleotides of mtDNA sequence data, collected from 38 specimens, comprising 25 populations of all five recognized species within the group, were used in a phylogenetic analysis of the origin of viviparity. Viviparity appears to have evolved twice in this group: once in S. goldmani, included in a clade formed by a northern group consisting of S. scalaris, S. chaneyi, and S. goldmani, and one more time in S. bicanthalis, included in the southern group formed by S. bicanthalis and S. aeneus. An oviparous population of S. bicanthalis nested within that viviparous clade, indicates that reversal from viviparity to oviparity may be possible. Degree of sequence divergence among several S. bicanthalis individuals pertaining to a population in which both parity modes occur, was no larger between oviparous and viviparous lizards than among viviparous lizards. This suggests that this population is a single species, and it may represent a transition from oviparity to viviparity or vice-versa.  相似文献

In spite of the importance of chemoreception in intraspecific communication of lizards, only a few studies have examined chemical composition of secretions of lizards. The secretion of the femoral glands of adult male lizards Lacerta vivipara contains a relatively low number (18) of lipophilic compounds in comparison with other related lacertid lizards. These compounds were identified on the basis of mass spectra, obtained by GC-MS. Chemicals included ten steroids (mainly cholesterol) and four carboxylic acids between n-C12 and n-C18, and minor components such as squalene, α-tocopherol, and two waxy esters, which may contribute to avoid oxidation of other lipophilic components in the fairly humid environments occupied by this lizard. Secretions of adult males from oviparous and viviparous populations did not differ in the numbers and quality of chemical compounds, but there were some differences in the relative proportion of some compounds. Males from oviparous populations had lower proportions of hexadecanoic acid and cholestan-3-one, and higher proportions of squalene than viviparous males. These differences might be explained by either small genetic differences between types or due to different microclimatic conditions in the original populations.  相似文献
