From 1978 - 1985, 14 trials were conducted, mainly in Northern England, to assess the efficacy of different insecticides, formulations and application times for the control of frit fly (Oscinella frit) on winter cereals (13 on winter wheat and one on winter barley). Treatments were compared by assessing shoot damage in December-January, numbers of healthy tillers in April and harvested yield. A chlorpyrifos spray to the grass before ploughing or at crop emergence gave the most consistently good results, significantly reducing damage and increasing yield by 0·61 and 0·31 t/ha respectively when taken over all trials. Sprays or granules of other insecticides applied from before drilling to 8 wk after emergence gave variable but sometimes good control and enhanced yield. Chlorpyrifos applied from crop emergence to 8 wk after emergence was generally more effective than other insecticides. Cypermethrin at emergence or 2wk later gave promising results in the two trials where it was used. Of the seed treatments fonofos was the most effective though it did not match the spray treatments. In additional trials, where insecticides were applied after damage occurred, sprays of chlorpyrifos and pirimphos-methyl reduced damage and increased yield.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the timing of the initial spray application of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrianis, relative to egg development in the field, for control of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) in potatoes. Effective potato beetle control was achieved with B. thuringiensis if the initial spray was applied during the period beginning when an average of 1-30% of marked egg masses had hatched, extending to 4 days after 30% egg hatch, of the initial flush of eggs. Significantly greater defoliation, numbers of third and fourth instar CPB and lower yields occurred in plots when the initial B. thuringiensis application was delayed until 6 days after 30% egg hatch, compared with plots treated at 30% egg hatch. In 1990, no improvement in CPB control was gained by application of the initial B. thuringiensis spray at first observation of CPB egg deposition or at first egg hatch, compared with application at 30% egg hatch. Recommendations for proper timing of B. thuringiensis sprays for effective CPB management are presented.  相似文献

Surveys in 1974–75 in which 20 plants were examined in each of 105 fields showed that cabbage stem weevil was widespread on spring oilseed rape in the south of England, the larvae sometimes infesting a large percentage of plants and reducing vigour and yield. In replicated field trials during 1974–77, infestations were reduced by seed treatments of gamma-HCH or sprays of gamma-HCH, azinphos-methyl, azinphos-methyl + demeton-S-methyl sulphone, chlorpyrifos or triazophos. In some experiments treatments significantly improved plant growth or yield, or both. Granules of carbofuran or phorate also reduced larval infestations and damage, but both thiofanox granules and dimethoate sprays were ineffective. Sprays of gamma-HCH or azinphos-methyl + demeton-S-methyl sulphone which were effective against stem weevil could also in some years give improved control of blossom beetles (Meligethes spp.)  相似文献

The gall wasp Callirhytis cornigera (Osten Sacken) is a cynipid with alternating generations that produce large, woody stem galls and tiny blister-like leaf galls on pin oak, Quercus palustris Muenchhausen, in the United States. We tested 3 approaches to control the leaf-galling generation, and determined their impact on associated parasitoids and effectiveness in reducing numbers of new stem galls. First, trees were sprayed with bifenthrin or chlorpyrifos in late March to kill females emerging from stem galls before they oviposited into buds. Second, concentrated solutions of abamectin, imidacloprid, or bidrin were injected from pressurized containers into tree sapwood to control larvae developing in young leaf galls. Finally, systemic insecticides (acephate, abamectin, dimethoate, or imidacloprid) were sprayed at early leaf expansion (2 May) or to young, expanded leaves (17 May) to target larvae in leaf galls. Parasitoids, mostly eulophids, accounted for approximately 70% mortality of leaf-galling C. cornigera larvae on untreated trees. Whole-canopy sprays during C. cornigera emergence from stem galls reduced overall numbers of galled leaves and leaf galls. Trunk injections of bidrin or abamectin resulted in significant mortality of gall inhabitants, including parasitoids. However, neither of the aforementioned approaches significantly reduced numbers of new stem galls. Sprays of abamectin, dimethoate, or imidacloprid applied on 2 May caused high mortality of all gall inhabitants. There was no net benefit, however, because parasitism caused a similar reduction in C. cornigera survival on unsprayed shoots. Sprays applied later in leaf expansion had little impact on gall inhabitants. Of the treatments tested, bifenthrin sprays at bud break provided the greatest reduction in new leaf galls, whereas bidrin injections provided the greatest reduction in gall wasps emerging from galled leaves. This study suggests that gall wasp outbreaks are unlikely to be controlled by a single treatment, regardless of application method.  相似文献

The economics of control of grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) and rose-grain aphid (Metopolophium dirhodum) were investigated in a series of experiments carried out across England in 1988 and 1989. Sprays of pirimicarb or dimethoate were applied at three growth stages and yield effects measured. Aphid infestations were determined by a range of different methods, to evaluate the value of each for decision making. Aphids overwintered in crops in mild conditions in both seasons, resulting in early population build-up and decline in many cases. Aphicide sprays applied during the booting stage increased average yields by 0.26 t/ha. Profitability of the treatment strategies considered was not greatly enhanced by selective spray application related to aphid assessment at this stage. Delaying decision making to the flowering or grain-filling stages resulted in reduced profitability. A poor correlation between aphid numbers and crop yield response to sprays was found. This was shown to be due to differences in subsequent aphid population development and in aphicide efficacy. Grain quality was affected only by high aphid infestations which caused large yield reductions.  相似文献

High volume sprays of dichlofluanid (0.1 % a.i.) reduced total fruit numbers but gave better control of Botrytis cinerea infections of tomato stems, leaves and fruit than sprays at 0.05 or 0.025% a.i. Surface residues from the sprays at 0–1, 0.05 or 0.025% a.i. were respectively 5.4, 1.6, 0.7 μg/g fresh weight of ripe fruit at harvest. Tank-mixed zineb (0.12% a.i.) and captan (0.2% a.i.) were less effective and increasing the spray intervals from 1 wk to 2 and 3 wk reduced the fungitoxicity of captan and zineb more than that of dichlofluanid. Harvest residues on ripe fruit were 7.1, 2.8 or 2.4 μg/g when dichlofluanid (0.1 % a.i.) sprays were applied at 1, 2 and 3 wk intervals respectively. Good control of B. cinerea was achieved if the whole plant was sprayed initially with dichlofluanid as soon as the second truss was flowering and subsequent sprays were restricted to the upper section of stem including the four or five youngest trusses of buds, flowers and fruit. When used as a post-infection spray there was a period of c. 8 wk before dichlofluanid markedly reduced the incidence of grey mould. Tank-mixed zineb (0.12% a.i.) controlled Botrytis fruit spotting but not leaf and stem infections. Botrytis stem lesions extended more rapidly on zineb-sprayed plants than on unsprayed plants or on plants treated with captan or dichlofluanid.  相似文献

Based on the results of ecological surveys of Adoxophyes orana and its natural enemies in apple orchards sprayed with the granulosis virus and control plots, we constructed working models to simulate the population dynamics in three different experimental plots; those treated with chemical insecticides, those with granulosis virus, and controls. The number of individuals killed by predators, parasitoids and by miscellaneous mortality factors could be calculated on the assumption of imperfect density relations; that is, relation of the number killed by each factor with the initial number of larvae was represented by a curve with an upper asymptote. We could estimate the proportion of virus infection using curves with upper asymptotes. Rate of increase from pupa to middle instar larvae of the next generation was subject to strong density-effect. Simulation we proposed in this paper suggests a possibility that a single spray of the virus at 1st generation can reduce not only the number of A. orana larvae in the 2nd and 3rd generations but also the degree of fruits injured by this insect. Spray of chemical insecticide is considered to be ineffective in reducing the pest density and the degree of injury to low levels in subsequent generations, as compared with untreated plot, where the density of the 1st generation larvae is low.  相似文献

The efficacy of two insecticide control programs for managing the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), and the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), were compared in the Georgian Bay, London, Niagara, and Quinte apple production areas of Ontario during 1995, 1996, and 1997. In the border spray program, an initial cover spray of organophosphorus insecticide was applied to eradicate codling moths that may have colonized a test plot during the previous growing season. Subsequent sprays were applied only to a four-tree-wide zone (approximately 20 wide) around the perimeter of the plot to control immigrating codling moths or apple maggots. In the cover spray program, all sprays of organophosphorus insecticide were applied to the entire plot. Apple maggot injury was significantly greater in border spray program plots than in cover spray program plots only during 1995 in the London production area. There was no significant difference in codling moth injury between border spray and cover spray plots in the four production areas during the three-year study. The elimination of cover sprays from border spray plots during July and August may have left the apple crop more susceptible to damage by second generation larvae of the obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), in the London production area during 1995. There was a trend of increasing codling moth injury from 1995 to 1997 in two border spray plots, and apple maggot injury was detected in these plots during the third year of the study.  相似文献

Fruit damage by obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), was examined on four different apple cultivars during 1997-1999 in heavily infested orchards in New York State. Inital fruit damage occurred 354+/-26 degree-days base 6 degrees C (DD6) after the first moth catch from the overwintering generation and continued to increase until after the typical spray season (approximately 1,300 DD6). In addition to apple damage by late instars, fruit damage occurred by early instars of the summer and overwintering generations. The insect growth regulator tebufenozide was used as a model insecticide to determine how a slow-acting insecticide and its relative toxicity to early (neonate) and late (fourth and fifth) instars may influence the efficacy of sprays for the control of the obliquebanded leafroller. Because tebufenozide is a slow-acting compound, bioassays were conducted to determine what percentage of the total mortality to neonates occurs at each 24 h interval until 10 d. Based on a polynomial regression, half of the total mortality to larvae at the LC25, LC50, LL90 and LC99 occurred at 7.2, 5.0, 4.1, and 3.0 d, respectively. Late instars were three times more tolerant to tebufenozide than neonates.  相似文献

Sprays of demeton-methyl insecticide decreased the spread of yellowing viruses by aphids in sugar-beet crops in England. Between 1957 and 1960, when yellows was prevalent, the incidence, assessed as ‘infected-plant-weeks’, was decreased by 36–41 % by one spray, depending on when it was applied, and by 55 % by two sprays, giving average yield increases of 1½ and 2 ton/acre of roots respectively. Between 1962 and 1966, when yellows spread less, a spray at the time when growers were advised to spray by the British Sugar Corporation decreased yellows incidence by 37 %, whereas sprays 2 weeks earlier or later decreased it by 24 % and 25 % respectively. Between 1958 and 1966 an annual average of 160000 of the country's 440000 acres of sugar beet has been sprayed, often to control Aphis fabae as well as to check the spread of yellows. A spray gives a profitable yield increase when yellows incidence in unsprayed plots is 20 % at the end of August.  相似文献

Summary We conducted experiments to assess the importance of winter cold and photoperiod as factors affecting the spatial and age distributions of overwintering larvae of the treehole mosquito Anopheles barberi. Larval dormancy in A. barberi was induced by photoperiods with 14.75 h of light or less per 24 h cycle. About 75% of the larvae entering dormancy were in the second instar regardless of photoperiod. Dormant second instar larvae survived freezing at-15° C for 24 h better than dormant third instar larvae. Larvae were more likely to survive freezing at-15° C in water from treeholes in which they were commonly found in nature than in water from treeholes in which they were unlikely to occur. Female oviposition was significantly higher into water from treeholes in which larvae were likely to be found than in either water from treeholes in which larvae were not commonly found or distilled water. These findings suggest that, in the northern part of its range, the distribution of A. barberi and the age structure of overwintering cohorts are influenced by extreme winter cold. The mechanisms responsible for the distribution of larvae and the overwintering age structure are, respectively, female oviposition behavior and larval photoperiodism.  相似文献

Inundative applications of the codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella L., granulovirus (CpGV), which target neonate larvae before or during initial entry into fruit, offer potential for selective control of this key pest. In field tests on apple we compared the persistence and efficacy of single applications of three CpGV products approved for organic orchards in North America. In addition, the success of repeated (2–14) applications of one product (Cyd-X) as a principal control measure for CM in apple orchards was monitored following operational use by cooperating growers at four separate locations. In the first study, an early season application of all products at label rates remained highly effective for the first 24 h (averaging 94% larval mortality relative to controls) and moderately effective after 72 h (averaging 71% mortality) during dry sunny conditions. Significant activity remained up to 14 days, suggesting prolonged survival of the virus in UV-protected locations, such as the calyx of fruit. A second application later in the season was slightly less effective. Data obtained from commercial sites provide circumstantial evidence for the effectiveness of well-timed CpGV applications against CM outbreaks. In all cases where first generation larvae were targeted beginning at egg hatch (≈250 degree days) and treated areas monitored (0.3–1.6 ha plots), fruit damage during the second larval generation was reduced or eliminated. Based on the number of live larvae recovered throughout the season, mortality rates remained high (80.3–100% across sites). The cumulative number of moths caught in pheromone-baited traps was reduced (66–94%) in the second flight. Data from tree bands placed to catch diapause-destined larvae indicated overwintering generations remained low in treated sites (0.18 larvae/band).  相似文献

The effect of temperature on egg development of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug was studied under controlled conditions. Based on a linear model describing the relationship between temperature and developmental rates a thermal threshold of 6.9 °C and a thermal constant of 85 day-degrees were established. The experimental results were used to expand and parameterise an existing phenology model to include egg development and hatching of first instar larvae. The model thus became a valuable forecasting tool not only for adult emergence and the optimal monitoring period but also for egg hatch and the best timing of control measures against first instar larvae. The model was validated by comparing predictions with independent observations on egg-laying and subsequent hatching of first instar larvae under semi-field conditions.  相似文献

Foliar sprays of 4 μg/ml oxamyl on sweet orange trees in a greenhouse slightly depressed the number of Tylenchulus semipenetrans larvae obtained from roots and soil, but similar treatments were not effective in two orchards. Soil drench treatments decreased the number of citrus nematode larvae obtained from roots or soil of citrus plants grown itt a greenhouse and in orchards. Exposure to 5-10 μg/ml of oxamyl in water was lethal to only a few second-stage larvae treated 10 days, and many second-stage larvae in 2.0 μg/ml oxamyl recovered motility when transferred to fresh water. Aqueous solutions of 50 and 100 μg/ml of oxamyl were toxic to citrus nematode larvae. Additional observations indicate that oxamyl interfered with hatch of citrus nematode larvae and was nematistatic and/or protected sweet orange roots from infection. Oxamyl degraded at different rates in two soils. The number of citrus nematode larvae that infected and developed on sweet orange roots was increased by an undetermined product of the degradation of oxamyl in soil, water, and possibly within plants. This product apparently was translocated in roots.  相似文献

Summary Pupae and fourth instar larvae of a southern (30°N, Alabama, USA) population of Wyeomyia smithii Coq. (Diptera: Culicidae) were collected from pitcher plants. Adults which emerged were maintained without food then dissected to determine their egg clutch size. Among females which matured eggs, fecundities were negatively correlated with larval densities in individual pitchers. The mean autogenous fecundity of the overwintering generation did not differ from a summer sample. Adults unable to mature eggs comprised 6–39% of samples, depending on whether collected as pupae or fourth instar larvae. Fecundity was negatively correlated with time to adult eclosion among larvae maintained on unrenewed pitcher contents in the laboratory.Cohorts from this population were reared in artificial containers from egg hatch to adulthood at a single density and a superior or inferior diet. On the superior larval diet, all females survived to reproductive age, and all but one (>99%) produced eggs autogenously. On the inferior diet, survivorship to adult eclosion was significantly less, a high proportion of females died before reaching reproductive age, and only 19% of survivors matured eggs without blood. Protracted larval development induced by the inferior diet did not influence the probability of autogeny among females that survived to reproductive maturity. The relationship between larval environment and reproductive strategies is contrasted across the geographic range of W. smithii. Bloodfeeding occurs among southern populations where density dependent constraints on preimaginal growth are constantly severe. The loss of hematophagy among northern populations may have been facilitated by periods of density independent larval growth.Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Experimental Station Journal Series No. 3645  相似文献

The effectiveness of tebufenozide applied against the adult, egg, and larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), was evaluated. Significant reductions in fecundity and egg hatch occurred after 1-h and 24-h exposures of females and 24-h exposures of males-only to residues in plastic plates. A significant reduction in egg hatch was also found after a 1-h exposure of males. The ovicidal effects of tebufenozide in field trials did not significantly differ for eggs laid on residues or treated topically. Corrected egg mortality exceeded 95% for cohorts laid <130 degree-days after sprays were applied. Fecundity and egg hatch were measured after either a 24-h exposure of moths or a 10-d exposure of moths and eggs on apple trees. Significant reductions in both fecundity and fertility occurred compared with an untreated control up to 7 d in the 24-h assays and accounted for 60-70% fewer larvae produced per mated female. The mean numbers of larvae produced per mated female after the 10-d exposure were reduced 100-75% in assays started on day 0-21 after the spray application compared with the untreated control. Fecundity was significantly reduced for 7 d and egg hatch was reduced for the entire 21-d test period in these trials. Residues had a 14-d half-life on apple foliage. Residues applied to foliage or to foliage and fruit did not significantly increase the proportion of uninjured fruit compared with the untreated control in bioassays where neonates were placed on foliage 10 cm from fruit. However, the proportion of injured fruits with shallow stings versus deep entries was higher on the treated versus the untreated plants. Field applications of tebufenozide reduced fruit injury >90% when applied early during emergence. Plots treated after the beginning of egg hatch had a larger proportion of injured fruits with shallow larval feeding.  相似文献

Summary Foliar sprays of growth regulators brought forth attendant changes in the rhizosphere of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan Millsp.). Sprays of NAA boosted up fungi in the rhizosphere, regardless of its concentration and age of the plants. Significant increases in bacterial numbers were recorded in the rhizosphere of 2,4-D-treated plants and this effect was again independent of the concentration employed and the age levels. Gibberellin and MH sprays generally lowered microbial numbers in the rhizosphere. Reductions in microbial numbers with MH sprays were not necessarily apparent when combined with other growth regulators. The recent spread of dreissenid mussels to various bodies of water in the western US has sparked interest by many state and federal agencies to develop protocols to stop further expansion. Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) are of particular importance as they are currently the most widespread dreissenid species in the region. This project examined the susceptibility of quagga mussels to hot-water sprays at different temperatures and durations of spray contact at Lake Mead (Nevada-Arizona, USA). Emersed adult quagga mussels were exposed to hot-water sprays at 20, 40, 50, 54, 60, 70, and 80°C for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 s. Sprays at ≥60°C for 5 s were shown to be 100% lethal. Sprays of 54°C for 10 s, 50°C for 20 s, and 40°C for 40 s also resulted in 100% mortality. A spray temperature of 60°C for 5 s is recommended for mitigating fouling by quagga mussels.  相似文献
