We define a gestalt as the invariants of a collection of patterns that can mutually be transformed into each other through a class of transformations encoded by, or conversely, determining that gestalt. The class of these transformations needs to satisfy structural regularities like the ones of the mathematical structure of a group. This makes an analysis of a gestalt possible in terms of relations between its representing patterns. While the gestalt concept has its origins in cognitive psychology, it has also important implications for morphology.  相似文献

Abstract. Ant colonies experience continuous shifts in worker populations, which may affect odour composition in the nest. A major question regarding the dynamics of gestalt formation is that of the speed at which the scent of a new individual will be incorporated into the gestalt. It is predicted from the gestalt model of colony odour that workers have to exchange recognition cues continuously to maintain themselves within the gestalt and become well integrated within their colony. Using radioactive tracers the rates of transfer were measured between a labelled donor ant and one or 10 recipient ants, as a close approximation to the within-nest situation. The labelled hydrocarbons were first transferred to a small number of individuals and progressively to all the individuals of the group so that the distribution of hydrocarbon transfer rate approached a normal distribution. Furthermore, in Camponotus fellah Dalla Torre, which performs trophallaxis, homogeneity was reached more rapidly than in Aphaenogaster senilis Mayr, which does not show this behaviour. In the latter species, the gestalt seems to be maintained mainly by allogrooming. These experiments were accompanied by behavioural observations to ascertain the respective importance of trophallaxis and allogrooming in the behavioural time-budget of the ants. In A. senilis , allogrooming was more frequent than in ants that trophallax, which corroborates the role of allogrooming in the establishment of the gestalt in this species.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a method to test alternative hypotheses of phenotypic evolution. The method compares patterns observed in phylogenetic character data with patterns expected by explicit models of evolutionary process. Observed patterns of character-state diversity are assessed from four properties of character-state change derived from a phylogenetic analysis: the sequence and correlation of transformations on a cladogram and the spatial and functional localization of these transformations to parts of an organism. Patterns expressed in terms of the localization of transformations are compared with the expectations of null models that the number of transformations is proportional to measures of size or complexity. Deviations from the values expected by the null models are then compared with qualitative expectations of the models. The method is applied to characters in the nervous system of gymnotiform electric fishes. Patterns in the diversity of 63 reconstructed character-state changes are compared with the expectations of 10 published models of neural evolution. A total of 63 expectations are reviewed, of which 33 (52%) are found to be consistent with the gymnotiform neural data. In general, the models reviewed are not successful at making global predictions, in part because they have been cast in excessively general terms. The data support the conclusion that evolution in the nervous system of gymnotiforms has involved a mosaic of processes, each operating differentially on functional and developmental systems and at different spatial and temporal scales. The results also indicate that more refined models are required, each making more explicit predictions.  相似文献

How do Crab-eating Monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) Perceive and Classify Realistic Visual Patterns? The process by which crab-eating monkeys perceive and classify stimuli functionally relevant to their feeding behaviour was investigated. The visual patterns consisted of realistic drawings of insects and parts of plants.
  • 1 A new experimental approach was conceived: During the experimental sessions social interactions within the group were permitted while the learning behaviour of individual monkeys was analysed. The procedure consisted of the simultaneous discrimination tasks of four visual patterns and motoric responses (continuous reinforcement).
  • 2 To prepare the functional analysis of their ability to classify environmental objects, tests were conducted in which the animals successively learned to answer visual stimuli with motoric responses. The monkeys learned not only to discriminate geometrical patterns from contrast and form cues but also to build specific associations between visual patterns and special motoric coordinations. When shown similar geometrical stimuli, the animals were able to generalise their recognition of invariant features (‘angularity’).
  • 3 The monkeys learned very quickly to discriminate insects from parts of plants. This discrimination ability could be transferred immediately to other insect pictures. This learning process was linked with a memorized classification system of natural objects induced by environmental experience. A preference test for single cues resulted in a graded estimation of particular pattern components. Numerous variations of the insect pattern were shown to the animals. From the different choice frequency for single cues, a gradual continuum of cue relevance could be established (e. g. contrast and form were the most relevant cues). A direct dependence between the completeness of the insect ‘gestalt’ and its choice frequency was shown.

The gene vestigial has been proposed to act as a master gene because of its supposed capacity to initiate and drive wing development. We show that the ectopic expression of vestigial only induces ectopic outgrowths with wing cuticular differentiation and wing blade gene expression patterns in specific developmental and genetic contexts. In the process of transformation, wingless seems to be an essential but insufficient co-factor of vestigial. vestigial ectopic expression alone or vestigial plus wingless co-expression in clones differentiate 'mixed' cuticular patterns (they contain wing blade trichomes and chaetae characteristic of the endogenous surrounding tissue) and express wing blade genes only in patches of cells within the clones. In addition, we have found that these clones, in the wing imaginal disc, may cause autonomous as well as non-autonomous cuticular transformations and wing blade gene expression patterns. These non-autonomous effects in surrounding cells result from recruitment or 'inductive assimilation' of vestigial or wingless-vestigial overexpressing cells.  相似文献

In 1923, Max Wertheimer proposed a research programme and method in visual perception. He conjectured the existence of a small set of geometric grouping laws governing the perceptual synthesis of phenomenal objects, or "gestalt" from the atomic retina input. In this paper, we review this set of geometric grouping laws, using the works of Metzger, Kanizsa and their schools. In continuation, we explain why the Gestalt theory research programme can be translated into a Computer Vision programme. This translation is not straightforward, since Gestalt theory never addressed two fundamental matters: image sampling and image information measurements. Using these advances, we shall show that gestalt grouping laws can be translated into quantitative laws allowing the automatic computation of gestalts in digital images. From the psychophysical viewpoint, a main issue is raised: the computer vision gestalt detection methods deliver predictable perception thresholds. Thus, we are set in a position where we can build artificial images and check whether some kind of agreement can be found between the computationally predicted thresholds and the psychophysical ones. We describe and discuss two preliminary sets of experiments, where we compared the gestalt detection performance of several subjects with the predictable detection curve. In our opinion, the results of this experimental comparison support the idea of a much more systematic interaction between computational predictions in Computer Vision and psychophysical experiments.  相似文献

Allometry constitutes an important source of morphological variation. However, its influence in head development in anurans has been poorly explored. By using geometric morphometrics followed by statistical and comparative methods we analyzed patterns of allometric change during cranial postmetamorphic ontogeny in species of Nest‐building frogs Leptodactylus (Leptodactylidae). We found that the anuran skull is not a static structure, and allometry plays an important role in defining its shape in this group. Similar to other groups with biphasic life‐cycle, and following a general trend in vertebrates, ontogenetic changes mostly involve rearrangement in rostral, otoccipital, and suspensorium regions. Ontogenetic transformations are paralleled by shape changes associated with evolutionary change in size, such that the skulls of species of different intrageneric groups are scaled to each other, and small and large species show patterns of paedomorphic/peramorphic features, respectively. Allometric trajectories producing those phenotypes are highly evolvable though, with shape change direction and magnitude varying widely among clades, and irrespective of changes in absolute body size. These results reinforce the importance of large‐scale comparisons of growth patterns to understand the plasticity, evolution, and polarity of morphological changes in different clades.  相似文献

Lack of both maternal and zygotic gene activity at the zeste-white 3 (zw3) locus causes severe developmental transformations. Embryos derived from germ cells that lack zw3+ gene activity die during embryogenesis and have a phenotype that is similar to that of embryos mutant for the segment polarity gene naked (nkd). In both nkd and germ line clone-derived zw3 embryos the pattern elements derived from the anterior-most part of each segment, the denticle belts, are deleted. Similar abnormal patterns of the zygotically expressed genes engrailed and Ultrabithorax are detected in both mutants, suggesting that the two genes are involved in the same developmental process. Additionally, the induction of clones of zw3 mutant cells in imaginal discs causes homeotic transformations of noninnervated hair cells into innervated sensory bristles. The multiple roles of zw3 during development and its possible interactions with the zygotic gene nkd are discussed.  相似文献

Chemical recognition cues are used to discriminate among species, con‐specifics, and potentially between patrilines in social insect colonies. There is an ongoing debate about the possible persistence of patriline cues despite evidence for the mixing of colony odors via a “gestalt” mechanism in social insects, because patriline recognition could lead to nepotism. We analyzed the variation in recognition cues (cuticular hydrocarbons) with different mating frequencies or queen numbers in 688 Formica exsecta ants from 76 colonies. We found no increase in the profile variance as genetic diversity increased, indicating that patriline effects were absent or possibly obscured by a gestalt mechanism. We then demonstrated that an isolated individual's profile changed considerably relative to their colony profile, before stabilizing after 5 days. We used these isolated individuals to eliminate the masking effects of the gestalt mechanism, and we detected a weak but statistically significant patriline effect in isolated adult workers and also in newly emerged callow workers. Thus, our evidence suggests that genetic variation in the cuticular hydrocarbon profile of F. exsecta ants (n‐alkanes and alkenes) resulted in differences among patrilines, but they were obscured in the colony environment, thereby avoiding costly nepotistic behaviors.  相似文献

Although recent research has shown that non-indigenous species often increase local-scale species richness, few have documented how such increases translate into compositional changes across biological scales. In particular, transformations of biodiversity patterns may be acute within regions that are simultaneously extinction and invasion hotspots (i.e. double-hotspots), such as the Hawaiian Islands. Nevertheless, modification of diversity relationships in such places are rarely quantified. Here, I utilize passerine non-indigenous species introductions and native species extinctions on Hawaii to quantitatively explore the changing relationship between within- (alpha), between- (beta), and across-island (gamma) diversity. My results indicate that, even after incorporating the enrichment effects of non-indigenous species invasions, across-island passerine diversity has dropped substantially. Nevertheless, within-island diversity has remained largely unchanged, or in some cases increased. Perhaps the more profound changes in diversity have come from the loss of between-island diversity. Because nearly all native Hawaiian passerines are extinct or near extinction, the current diversity relationships are inordinately influenced by patterns in the transportation and establishment of non-indigenous birds. These human-induced ‘dispersal’ patterns are markedly different from natural ones. In addition, these dispersal patterns may be unique to vagile species such as birds, thus indicating that transformations of diversity within other groups (e.g. plants or freshwater fishes) currently inhabiting Hawaii may differ. These results suggest the need to explore how alteration of diversity relationships translate into the loss of ecosystem services, or other valued components of biodiversity.  相似文献

植物中不同转基因方法转化外源基因的T-DNA整合特征既具有共性,又具有特性,使得转基因的遗传在各独立转化体间呈现多样性,另外多种遗传因子和限制因素使受体植物中外源基因的表达存在下降,甚至出现基因沉默等复杂现象。本文主要对农杆菌介导及裸露DNA直接转化转基因植物中T-DNA的分子特征和转基因表达的影响因子进行了介绍和概述。转化体中转基因的遗传稳定性和表达主要取决于转基因在植物基因组中的整合位置、拷贝数及组成结构。因而,通过对具有表达水平各异的转化体进行深入的遗传分析和分子生物学研究以及转化体之间进行的比较研究,将对转基因技术自身的完善、定点整合以及更有效的利用转基因技术都具有十分重要的意义。  相似文献

Together with patterns of speciation and extinction, post-speciation transformations in the range sizes of individual species determine the form of contemporary species range-size distributions. However, the methodological problems associated with tracking the dynamics of a species' range size over evolutionary time have precluded direct study of such range-size transformations, although indirect evidence has led to several models being proposed describing the form that they might take. Here, we use independently derived molecular data to estimate ages of species in six monophyletic groups of birds, and examine the relationship between species age and global geographic range size. We present strong evidence that avian range sizes are not static over evolutionary time. In addition, it seems that, with the regular exception of certain taxa (for example island endemics and some threatened species), range-size transformations are non-random in birds. In general, range sizes appear to expand relatively rapidly post speciation; subsequently; and perhaps more gradually, they then decline as species age. We discuss these results with reference to the various models of range-size dynamics that have been proposed.  相似文献

The investigation of several Berkheya species afforded in addition to already known compounds three unusual sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Together with modhephene and isocomene, a new one is present, its structure being elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by some chemical transformations. We describe here the mid-facial region of a skull of anatomically modern Homo sapiens (FAI 3/2/1) that exhibits upwardly divergent nasal bones. In previous literature, that pattern has been described as a diagnostic character state for the robust early hominid taxon Paranthropus. This specimen supports our viewpoint that nasal region morphology varies extensively within and between living hominoid primate taxa, in patterns that provide a basis for understanding how microevolutionary variation serves as the basis for macroevolutionary transformations.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), which play a critical role in immune recognition, influence mating preference and other social behaviors in mice. Training experiments using urine scent from mice differing only in the MHC complex, from MHC class I mutants or from knock-out mice lacking functional MHC class I molecules (beta2m-deficient), suggest that these behavioral effects are mediated by differences in MHC-dependent volatile components. In search for the physical basis of these behavioral studies, we have conducted a comparison of urinary volatiles in three sub-strains of C57BL/6 mice, a beta2m-deficient mutant lacking functional MHC class I expression and two unrelated inbred strains, using the technique of sorptive extraction with polydimethylsiloxan and subsequent analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. We show (i) that qualitative differences occur between different inbred strains but not in mice with the C57BL/6 background, (ii) that the individual variability in abundance in the same mouse strain is strongly component-dependent, (iii) that C57BL/6 sub-strains obtained from different provenance show a higher fraction of quantitative differences than a sub-strain and its beta2m-mutant obtained from the same source and (iv) that comparison of the spectra of beta2m mice and the corresponding wild type reveals no qualitative differences in close to 200 major and minor components and only minimal differences in a few substances from an ensemble of 69 selected for quantitative analysis. Our data suggest that odor is shaped by ontogenetic, environmental and genetic factors, and the gestalt of this scent may identify a mouse on the individual and population level; but, within the limits of the ensemble of components analysed, the results do not support the notion that functional MHC class I molecules influence the urinary volatile composition.  相似文献

The validity of a hypothesis connecting the existence of a certain visual apparent-motion effect and the capacity of the visual system to recognize, in a special way, objects that have undergone certain transformations is subjected to experimental test. The objects under consideration are random-dot patterns and the transformations under consideration are rigid motions of the plane. Primary cilia are microtubule-based organelles that serve as hubs for the transduction of various developmental signaling pathways including Hedgehog, Wnt, FGF, and PDGF. Ciliary dysfunction contributes to a range of disorders, collectively known as the ciliopathies. Recently, interest has grown in these syndromes, particularly among craniofacial biologists, as many known and putative ciliopathies have severe craniofacial defects. Herein we discuss the current understanding of ciliary biology and craniofacial development in an attempt to gain insight into the molecular etiology for craniofacial ciliopathies, and uncover a characteristic ciliopathic craniofacial gestalt.  相似文献

Summary Saturated methyl ester is preferentially hydrolysed in presence of corresponding ,-unsaturated ester by Pig Liver Esterasse. This selectivity is known for aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic esters.Chemo, regio and stereoselective transformations are an important goal towards synthetic efficiency (Bartman and Trost, 1984). Among the various methods that are employed to achieve such reactions, enzymatic transformations are in the forefront of current research activities (Jones, 1986) because of several advantages over the chemical methods. These include extremely high degree of selectivity, easier isolation of products, specially with immobilized enzymes and their reusability. In the past decade this class of biocatalysts has provided a plathora of valuable selective transformations (Boland et.al, 1991). Pig Liver Esterase (PLE) is one such enzyme which has been thoroughly studied and used for asymmetric (Zhu and Tedford, 1990) and regioselective (Adachi et.al, 1986) hydrolysis of esters. Several chiral building blocks for the synthesis of complex natural products (Imori et.al., 1983) have been synthesized through PLE. In this communication, we report the preferential hydrolysis of a saturated ester over its unsaturated counterpart. The preference is total and works well for aliphatic, aromatic as well as heterocyclic systems.  相似文献

The bithorax (bx) mutations in the Ultrabithorax (Ubx) gene of Drosophila melanogaster cause homeotic transformations of anterior third thoracic structures (T3a) toward anterior second thoracic structures (T2a) in the adult fly. A corresponding loss of Ubx protein expression in T3a of bx imaginal discs has been observed (White and Wilcox, 1985). We describe two genetic loci which modify the bx-induced transformation. A locus which we map very close to the pink peach (pp) gene suppresses the bx1 phenotype. In contrast, mutations in the suppressor of sable (su(s)) gene enhance the bx1 phenotype. A correlation was observed between patterns of Ubx protein expression and the phenotypic transformations observed.  相似文献
