Female fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, lay their eggs on decaying plant material. Foraging fly larvae strongly depend on the availability of dietary microbes, such as yeasts, to reach the adult stage. In contrast, strong interference competition with filamentous fungi can cause high mortality among Drosophila larvae. Given that many insects are known for employing beneficial microbes to combat antagonistic ones, we hypothesized that fly larvae engaged in competition with the noxious mould Aspergillus nidulans benefit from the presence of dietary yeast species, especially when they are associated with increasingly species rich yeast communities (ranging from one to six yeast species per community). On a nutrient‐limited fruit substrate infested with A. nidulans, both larval survival and development time were positively affected by more diverse yeast communities. On a mould‐free fruit substrate, merely larval development but not survival was found to be affected by increasing species richness of dietary yeasts. Not only yeast diversity had an effect on D. melanogaster life‐history traits, but also the identity of the yeast combinations. These findings demonstrate the importance of the structure and diversity of microbial communities in mutualistic animal–microbe interactions.  相似文献

Yeast strains present in 10 samples of kefir of different commercial and domestic origins have been isolated and classified taxonomically on the basis of the internal transcribed sequences (ITS) of their ribosomal RNA genes. A total of 18 yeast strains representing 10 different species have been characterized. Of the three commercial kefir samples analyed, two contained the well characterized yeast Kluyveromyces lactis while no yeast was found in the other one. A broader spectrum of yeast species was found among the home-made kefir samples, of which Issatchenkia orientalis, Saccharomyces unisporus, Saccharomyces exiguus and Saccharomyces humaticus were the most representative species.  相似文献

Microbes have evolved ways of interference competition to gain advantage over their ecological competitors. The use of secreted killer toxins by yeast cells through acquiring double‐stranded RNA viruses is one such prominent example. Although the killer behaviour has been well studied in laboratory yeast strains, our knowledge regarding how killer viruses are spread and maintained in nature and how yeast cells co‐evolve with viruses remains limited. We investigated these issues using a panel of 81 yeast populations belonging to three Saccharomyces sensu stricto species isolated from diverse ecological niches and geographic locations. We found that killer strains are rare among all three species. In contrast, killer toxin resistance is widespread in Saccharomyces paradoxus populations, but not in Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Saccharomyces eubayanus populations. Genetic analyses revealed that toxin resistance in S. paradoxus is often caused by dominant alleles that have independently evolved in different populations. Molecular typing identified one M28 and two types of M1 killer viruses in those killer strains. We further showed that killer viruses of the same type could lead to distinct killer phenotypes under different host backgrounds, suggesting co‐evolution between the viruses and hosts in different populations. Taken together, our data suggest that killer viruses vary in their evolutionary histories even within closely related yeast species.  相似文献

The effects of the temperature-moisture factors on the phylloplane yeast communities inhabiting Sphagnum mosses were studied along the transition from a boreal forest to a swamp biotope at the Central Forest State Biosphere Reserve (Tver region, Russia). We tested the hypothesis that microclimatic parameters affect yeast community composition and structure even on a rather small spatial scale. Using a conventional plating technique we isolated and identified by molecular methods a total of 15 species of yeasts. Total yeast counts and species richness values did not depend on environmental factors, although yeast community composition and structure did. On average, Sphagnum in the swamp biotope supported a more evenly structured yeast community. Relative abundance of ascomycetous yeasts was significantly higher on swamp moss. Rhodotorula mucilaginosa dominated in the spruce forest and Cryptococcus magnus was more abundant in the swamp. Our study confirmed the low occurrence of tremellaceous yeasts in the Sphagnum phyllosphere. Of the few isolated ascomycetous yeast and yeast-like species, some were differentiated from hitherto known species in physiological tests and phylogenetic analyses. We describe one of them as Candida sphagnicola and designate KBP Y-3887T (=CBS 11774T = VKPM Y-3566T = MUCL 53590T) as the type strain. Genetic relatedness of 14 yeast strains and 2 mold strains was studied by the DNA-DNA hybridization method. The hybridization was performed between mitochondrial-DNA-free, 32p-labeled DNA of Saccharomyces cerevisiae IAM 4009 and cold DNA of other strains. The DNA homology indices deviated considerably even among S. cerevisiae strains having similar GC contents, but, in general, yeast strains known to be able to mate with S. cerevisiae, showed high homology indices (35∽70%). Other species of Saccharomycetaceae and 6 asporogenous yeast strains exhibited values of 10∽20%. The relatedness suggested from these results was confirmed by the competition experiments and also by the hybridization with 32P-DNA of Candida pulcherrima IFO 0561. DNA’s of Aspergillus oryzae I and Neurospora crassa IFO 6067 also exhibited low but appreciable homology indices (5∽7%). These results were discussed from the aspects of phylogenetics and also of gene conservation in microorganisms.  相似文献

Recently a new habitat for microbial life has been discovered at the base of polythermal glaciers. In ice from these subglacial environments so far only non-photosynthetic bacterial communities were discovered, but no eukaryotic microorganisms. We found high numbers of yeast cells, amounting to a maximum of 4,000 CFU ml−1 of melt ice, in four different high Arctic glaciers. Twenty-two distinct species were isolated, including two new yeast species. Basidiomycetes predominated, among which Cryptococcus liquefaciens was the dominant species (ca. 90% of total). Other frequently occurring species were Cryptococcus albidus, Cryptococcus magnus, Cryptococcus saitoi and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. The dominant yeast species were psychrotolerant, halotolerant, freeze-thaw resistant, unable to form mycelium, relatively small-sized and able to utilize a wide range of carbon and nitrogen sources. This is the first report on the presence of yeast populations in subglacial ice.  相似文献

Exotic plant invasions are a serious concern for land managers and conservationists. There is evidence that increased nitrogen availability favors exotic species and decreased nitrogen availability favors non-weedy native species. This study was conducted to test the effect of nitrogen availability on competition between two grass species with contrasting life histories, cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a North American exotic, and blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), a North American native. We investigated the effects of nitrogen availability and competition on aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, height, and % nitrogen tissue concentrations by growing the two species in the greenhouse under five levels of nitrogen and six levels of competition. Nitrogen availability affected competition between Bromus tectorum and Bouteloua gracilis. At the lowest level of N availability, neither species was affected by competition. As N availability increased, aboveground biomass gain of Bromus was more negatively affected by intraspecific competition relative to interspecific competition while the opposite occurred for Bouteloua. At the competition level at which each species gained the most aboveground biomass, Bromus had a linear response to increasing N availability while the response of Bouteloua was asymptotic. Our results do provide some support for the theory that fast growing exotic species have a rapid response to nutrient enrichment while native non-weedy species do not, and that low N levels can reduce competitive pressure from the exotic on the native.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to describe the yeast community of 20 sourdoughs collected from central Italy and to characterize the sourdoughs based on chemical properties. A polyphasic approach consisting of traditional culture-based tests (spore-forming and physiological tests) and molecular techniques (PCR-RFLP, RAPD-PCR, PCR-DGGE) and chemical analysis (total acidity, acids, and sugar contents), was utilized to describe the yeast population and to investigate the chemical composition of the doughs. PCR-RFLP analysis identified 85% of the isolates as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with the other dominant species being Candida milleri (11%), Candida krusei (2.5%), and Torulaspora delbrueckii (1%). RAPD-PCR analysis, performed with primers M13 and LA1, highlighted intraspecific polymorphism among the S. cerevisiae strains. The diversity of the sourdoughs from the Abruzzo region is reflected in the chemical composition, yeast species, and strain polymorphism. Our approach using a combination of phenotypic and genotypic methods identified the yeast species in the 20 sourdough samples and provided a complete overview of the yeast populations found in sourdoughs from the Abruzzo region.  相似文献

I investigated the competitive relationships between two species of Daphnia, D. galeata and D. cucullata, and their interspecific hybrid. The term hemispecific competition was introduced to describe competition between parental species and hybrids. In eutrophic Tjeukemeer both parental species were found to compete with the hybrid, whereas competition between D. galeata and D. cucullata seemed limited. Although the effect of competition on life history traits of daphnids may be profound, the influence of the competitors on the seasonal dynamics of the Daphnia species seems limited.  相似文献

Yeasts are common inhabitants of different types of aquatic habitats, including marine and estuarine waters and rivers. Although numerous studies have surveyed yeast occurrence in these habitats, the identification of autochthonous populations has been problematic because several yeast species seem to be very versatile and therefore mere presence is not sufficient to establish an ecological association. In the present study we investigated the dynamics of the yeast community in the Tagus river estuary (Portugal) by combining a microbiological study involving isolation, quantification, and molecular identification of dominant yeast populations with the analysis of hydrological and hydrographical data. We set out to test the hypothesis of the multiple origins of estuarine yeast populations in a transect of the Tagus estuary and we postulate four possible sources: open sea, terrestrial, gastrointestinal and the estuary itself in the case of populations that have become resident. Candida parapsilosis and Pichia guilliermondii were correlated with Escherichia coli, which indicated an intestinal origin. Other cream-colored yeasts like Debaryomyces hansenii and Candida zeylanoides had similar dynamics, but no association with E. coli and quite distinct ecological preferences. They might represent a group of resident estuarine populations whose primary origin is diverse and can include marine, terrestrial, and gastrointestinal habitats. Another major yeast population was represented by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. The cosmopolitan nature of that species and its moderate association with E. coli point to terrestrial sources as primary habitats.  相似文献

The identification of potential competitors has been driven by the concept of limiting similarity. Lacking are explicit tests of interaction strength among morphologically similar and dissimilar species. I used the mottled sculpin, Cottus bairdi, as a focal species in an artificial stream experiment designed to compare the effect of intraspecific competition to interspecific cometition from two very different species: a congener, the Kanawha sculpin (C. carolinae ssp.), and an unrelated species, the fantail darter (Etheostoma flabellare). The differences in morphology between these two species generate specific predictions under limiting similarity regarding the likelihood of competition and its relative strength: the congener should be a more important potential competitor. Increased fish density had a strong effect on the multivariate response of survival and growth, and on the relative condition of C. bairdi, indicating competition. The effect of additional C. bairdi or Kanawha sculpins were roughly equal, but the effect of E. flabellare was significantly greater. The most important potential impact on C. bairdi came from interspecific competition by a species that is smaller and very different in morphology, contrary to predictions based on limiting similarity.  相似文献

The yeast flora of whole-crop maize ensiled for two weeks was predominated by Candida holmii, C. lambica, C. milleri, Hansenula anomala and Saccharomyces dairensis. Inoculation with other yeast species reported in the literature to prevail in maize or wheat silages did not alter the yeast flora. At 25 or 30° C the ascomycetous fermentative species found at 20° C were accompanied with ascomycetous non-fermentative fungi, i.c. Exophiala jeanselmei and Verticillium psalliotae, by the non-fermentative imperfect basidiomycetous yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and by the weakly fermentative imperfect ascomycetous yeast Trichosporon adeninovorans.The yeast flora of other vegetable crops, ensiled at 20° C for two weeks, was predominated by the same species that prevailed in ensiled maize, provided the crop did not contain mustard oils or menthol. If these compounds occurred in the crops, the yeast flora was predominated by nonfermentative species like Candida famata, Stephanoascus ciferrii, Rhodotorula minuta, Rh. rubra and Trichosporon cutaneum.  相似文献

Recent population dynamic theory predicts that disruption of biological control may occur when one parasitoid species' superiority in intrinsic competition is associated with a lower ability to find and exploit hosts (i.e., ability in extrinsic competition). One might expect such a trade-off, for instance, if parasitoids with larger (and fewer) eggs are more likely to prevail in intrinsic competition than species with smaller (and more numerous) eggs. We tested the idea that relative egg size could be used to predict the outcome of intrinsic competition in two closely related endoparasitoids, Encarsia pergandiella Howard and Encarsia formosa Gahan. Contrary to expectation, the parasitoid species with smaller eggs, E. pergandiella, prevailed in intrinsic competition, regardless of the order that hosts were exposed to the two species. In a literature survey, we found four studies of competing pairs of endoparasitoid species for which: (a) egg size estimates were available and (b) one species was consistently superior in intrinsic competition. In three of the four studies, the small-egged species prevailed in intrinsic competition, as we also found. Although E. formosa lost in intrinsic competition, this species negatively affected E. pergandiella's progeny production by host feeding on and killing hosts containing E. pergandiella eggs. E. formosa females also host fed on conspecific-parasitized hosts. As a mechanism of both intra- and interspecific interference competition, host feeding on parasitized hosts contradicts assumptions about the nature of interference competition in existing population dynamics models.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop species-specific primer pairs based on the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of the ribosome DNA for species identification of the frequently found sourdough yeast species. Species-specific primers were designed by the alignment of sourdough yeast ITS sequences, which were then employed for PCR using the template DNA of sourdough yeast strains. PCR primers were shown to be specific for the following species: Issatchenkia orientalis (Candida krusei), C. humilis, Kazachstania exigua (C. holmii), Pichia anomala and P. subpelliculosa. Therefore, we conclude that our novel species-specific primers could be used to rapidly and accurately identify the most frequent sourdough yeast species using a PCR-based assay.  相似文献

The yeast communities from necrotic tissues, decaying flowers and fruits, and from larval feeding sites of the mothSigelgaita sp. in the cactusPilosocereus arrabidae were surveyed in three restinga ecosystems in Southeastern Brazil. Insects associated with these substrates were sampled to verify the vectoring of yeasts. The cactusPilosocereus arrabidae was shown to have four different yeast communities associated with it. Necrotic stems had a diverse yeast community with the prevalent speciesPichia barkeri, Candida sonorensis, Pichia cactophila, Geotrichum sp.,Myxozyma mucilagina andSporopachydermia sp. A, representing about 80% of the total isolates.Pichia sp. A and aCandida domercqii-like species represented more than 90% of the yeast isolates from decaying flowers. Fruits had a heterogeneous yeast community with typical fruit yeasts of the genusKloeckera, basidiomicetous anamorphs of the genusCryptococcus, the black yeastAureobasidium pullulans, Pichia sp. A, aCandida domercqii-like species, and some cactophilic yeasts, especiallyClavispora opuntiae. The feeding site ofSigelgaita sp. larvae hadClavispora opuntiae as the prevalent species. Insect vectors are suggested as one the most important factors influencing the composition of these yeast communities.  相似文献

Experimental studies was made on the interspecies competition between the azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis and the southern cowpea weevil, C. macultatus. And the following results were obtained.
  1. The reverse result of competition between the two species observed under the air-tight condition and the air-free one. That is, the population of the azuki bean weevils destroyedby that of the southern cowpea weevils under the former condition and vice versa under the latter. It is thought that such a reversal is due to the difference of sensibility of each species to the air-tight condition.
  2. Under the air-free condition, change of the time interval of food-supplying had no effect on the result of competition within the limits of this experiment. The population of the southern cowpea weevils was always destroyed by that of the azuki bean weevils. But there was a certain degree of correlation between the duration of co-existence and the interval of food-supplying.
  3. From the results, it is possible to say that by changing the degree of air-tightness, or the time interval of food-supplying, the co-existence period and the final result of competition can be changed.
  4. The different mechanism of competition between two species in the present experiment from the experiments ofUtida (1952) andYoshida (1957) were discussed.
  5. A difference in the mechanism of interspecies competition and intraspecies competition was expected from the level of total population numbers of two species and the individual weight of C. chinensis.

Although Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) infests fresh and ripening fruits, it is attracted to fermented fruits as well. Because fermented fruits attract other flies too, if D. suzukii utilizes fermented fruits as oviposition substrates, competition can be more intense on them. To avoid such competition, D. suzukii may change oviposition preference when particular species of competitor flies are present, but the effect of odor cues associated with competitors on the oviposition preference of D. suzukii is still unknown. To examine such an effect, we investigated the oviposition preference of D. suzukii in the presence of four competitor fly species – Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, Drosophila lutescens Malloch, Drosophila rufa Kikkawa & Peng, and Drosophila auraria Peng – and D. suzukii itself. We prepared artificial substrates with yeast treatment (Y+: yeast supplementation, Y: control) and competitor fly treatment (F+: pre-inoculated with competitor fly odor, F: control), and performed two-choice experiments using the substrates with various Y and F treatments. Our results showed that D. suzukii oviposited more eggs on Y+ substrates than on Y substrates when no competitor flies were present and the presence of competitor flies influenced D. suzukii’s oviposition preference for yeast-supplemented substrates and its effect changed depending on the competitor fly species. If the presence of competitors around fallen fruits on the ground suppresses D. suzukii’s oviposition on the fallen fruits and facilitates the oviposition on non-fermenting substrates in nature, it may drive D. suzukii to use ripening fruits on the tree. Such selective pressure may facilitate the evolution of morphological traits such as a serrated ovipositor in D. suzukii.  相似文献

The yeasts are microorganisms with great potential for biotechnological applications in diverse areas. The biological control of phytopathogens by yeasts has showed satisfactory results under laboratory conditions, and it has already produced commercial formulations. With this as focus, this work aims to perform in vitro and in vivo evaluations of the action of a Torulaspora globosa yeast strain (1S112), isolated from sugarcane rhizosphere, against the phytopathogenic mold Colletotrichum sublineolum, the causative agent of anthracnose in sorghum. In vitro experiments included the antagonism test in Petri dishes with morphological hyphal evaluation; yeast killer activity; siderophore, volatile compound and hydrolytic enzyme production. In vivo experiments were conducted in greenhouse conditions with a sorghum variety susceptible to C. sublineolum by evaluating the anthracnose disease for 6 weeks. The results indicated that the yeast strain significantly controlled the fungal growth, either in vitro or in vivo. The strain of T. globosa exhibited killer activity against two sensitive strains, which is a novel capacity for this species. The yeast did not produce siderophores, volatile compounds or hydrolytic enzymes, although it has reduced the mycelial growth, resulting in hyphal deformities but not cell death. The yeast controlled the anthracnose disease in sorghum, either inoculated before or after the fungal spores, suggesting that the competition for space and nutrients to dominate the mold and killer toxin production, altering the hyphal morphology, are mechanisms utilized by the yeast in the biocontrol.  相似文献

In the course of a study on yeast diversity in Japan and Thailand, we isolated two yeast strains with bipolar budding patterns. Physiological and phylogenetic analysis suggested that these two strains were identical to Hanseniaspora pseudoguilliermondii. However, these strains produced hat-shaped ascospores and endospores, the latter of which was an unknown characteristic of the species. Endospores were produced on yeast extract–malt extract (YM) plates, though ascospores were produced on cornmeal agar of H. pseudoguilliermondii cultures. Endospores were formed in a twin-cell structure composed of a mother cell and a daughter cell, which did not separate after budding. Unlike the cell wall of the endospores, that of ascospore was stained with a chitin-specific stain. This was a feature distinguishing endospores and ascospores. Cell morphology of H. pseudoguilliermondii was compared with other species of the genus by observing their type strains. Other Hanseniaspora species did not show endospore formation under the same condition in which H. pseudoguilliermondii did. Therefore, the formation of endospores was considered to be a species-delimiting character of H. pseudoguilliermondii.  相似文献
