The Hamilton and Zuk hypothesis on haemoparasite-mediated sexual selection and certain studies of reproductive costs are based on the assumption that avian blood parasite infections are detrimental to their hosts. However, there is no experimental evidence demonstrating harmful effects of blood parasites on fitness in wild populations, it even having been suggested that they may be non-pathogenic. Only an experimental manipulation of natural blood parasite loads may reveal their harmful effects. In this field experiment we reduced through medication the intensity of infection by Haemoproteus majoris and the prevalence of infection by Leucocytoazoon majoris in blue tits (Parus caeruleus), and demonstrated detrimental effects of natural levels of infection by these common parasite species on host reproductive success and condition. The fact that some of the costs of infection were paid by offspring indicates that blood parasites reduce parental working capacity while feeding nestlings. Medicated females may be able to devote more resources to parental care through being released from the drain imposed upon them by parasites and/or through a reduced allocation to an immune response. Therefore, this work adds support to previous findings relating hosts' life-history traits and haematozoan infections.  相似文献

A sample of mud snails Hydrobia ulvae (Prosobranchia) from an intertidal population revealed that the shells of trematode-infected specimens were especially likely to be fouled with epibionts. Experimentally trematode-infected Biomphalaria glabrata (Pulmonata) appeared to be especially prone to develop epigrowth in comparison with uninfected conspecifics as well. These findings suggest an interaction between trematode infections and epibiosis in aquatic gastropods. The two most likely explanations for this are (1) that trematode infections weakens the snails' natural defences against epibionts, or (2) that the defences against epibionts also are effective against invading trematodes, causing snail specimens with a particularly good fouling defence to be less likely to become infected.  相似文献

In many species of passerine birds yearlings display a less elaborate version of the adult secondary sexual traits, but the causes of such differences in ornamentation are not always well understood. We studied age-related changes in blue tit Parus caeruleus UV/blue structural crown coloration, a sexually selected trait. In our Austrian study population, older blue tits, irrespective of sex, displayed on average a more ultraviolet (lower hue, higher UV chroma), more chromatic and brighter crown coloration than yearlings. This age dichromatism was caused by within-individual changes in the expression of crown coloration between years since males and females became more UV, more chromatic and brighter as they aged. Colour biased survival did not contribute to the observed pattern of age dichromatism since crown coloration was largely unrelated to overwinter survival. Between-year repeatability of crown colour was significant for most colour variables but low in general, and lower for females than for males. In the blue tit, yearling males might benefit from being less ornamented by avoiding adult aggression but at the expense of sexual attractiveness. Adaptive explanations of blue tit age dichromatism should however take into account that age effects were of similar magnitude in males and females. This suggests that both male and female yearlings could benefit from being less ornamented and hence that sexual selection might be acting on both sexes simultaneously in this species.  相似文献

Monogeneans (flatworms) are among the most host-specific of parasites in general and may be the most host-specific of all fish parasites. Specificity, in terms of a restricted spatial distribution within an environment, is not unique to parasites and is displayed by some fungi, insects, birds, symbionts and pelagic larvae of free-living marine invertebrates. The nature of cues, how "habitats" are recognised and how interactions between partners are mediated and maintained is of interest across these diverse "associations". We review some experiments that demonstrate important factors that contribute to host-specificity at the level of infective stages (larvae of oviparous monogeneans; juveniles of viviparous gyrodactylids) and adult parasites. Recent research on immune responses by fish to monogenean infections is considered. We emphasise the critical importance of host epidermis to the Monogenea. Monogeneans live on host epidermis, they live in its products (e.g. mucus), monopisthocotyleans feed on it, some of its products are "attractants" and it may be an inhospitable surface because of its immunological activity. We focus attention on fish but reference is made to amphibian hosts. We develop the concept for a potential role in host-specificity by the anterior adhesive areas, either the specialised tegument and/or anterior secretions produced by monogeneans for temporary but firm attachment during locomotion on host epithelial surfaces. Initial contact between the anterior adhesive areas of infective stages and host epidermis may serve two important purposes. (1) Appropriate sense organs or receptors on the parasite interact with a specific chemical or chemicals or with surface structures on host epidermis. (2) A specific but instant recognition or reaction occurs between component(s) of host mucus and the adhesive(s) secreted by monogeneans. The chemical composition of fish skin is known to be species-specific and our preliminary analysis of the chemistry of some monogenean adhesives indicates they are novel proteins that display some differences between parasite families and species.  相似文献

By comparison with deciduous oaks, the lower yearly production of new leaves in sclerophyllous oaks is hypothesized to have several consequences on animal communities. In particular, the production of arthropod communities that feed upon the leaves should be lower in sclerophyllous than in deciduous oaks, this causing changes in breeding patterns and the demographic balance in insectivorous birds. Studies in both deciduous and sclerophyllous habitats in southern France have shown that: 1) the spring development of new leaves occurs later and more slowly in sclerophyllous than in deciduous oaks, 2) the biomass of caterpillars is much lower in sclerophyllous oak forests, and 3) there is a large variation in life history traits of the Blue Tit depending in which type of habitat they breed. Laying date occurs later and clutch size is lower in sclerophyllous habitats than in deciduous habitats. The evolution of life history traits is discussed according to whether poor sclerophyllous habitats are isolated (e.g. on Corsica) or are parts of landscapes including both habitat types.  相似文献

Eosinophils have been shown to be potent effector cells for the killing of helminth parasites in in vitro cultures. However, an in vivo role for eosinophils has been more difficult to establish. Early data showed close associations between eosinophils and damaged or dead parasites in histological sections, and significant correlations between resistance to parasites and the capacity to induce eosinophilia after infection. However, more recent studies, using mice that have reduced or increased eosinophil levels through targeting of the eosinophil-specific cytokine interleukin 5, have not unanimously supported an in vivo role for eosinophils in resistance to parasites. Here, Els Meeusen and Adam Balic review these studies and suggest a major role for the innate immune response in unnatural mouse-parasite models to explain some of the findings. They conclude that the data so far are consistent with a role for eosinophils in the killing of infective larval stages, but not adults, of most helminth parasites.  相似文献

Temperature variation affects all life stages of organisms, especially early development, and considering global warming, it is urgent to understand precisely its consequences. In egg‐laying species, incubation behaviour can buffer embryo developmental temperature variation and influence offspring development. We experimentally investigated the effect of an increase in minimum daily nest temperature during incubation in the great tit Parus major, by placing a hand warming pad under the nest in the evenings. As compared to controls, the experimental treatment increased nest temperature at night by an average of 4°C, and this increase carried over to the following day. We measured the consequences of this mainly nocturnal temperature increase during incubation on 1) parental behaviour (incubation and nestling feeding), 2) parental health (quantified by body condition, immune status, physiological and oxidative stress) and 3) reproductive success (nestling body condition, growth, i.e. mass gain, hatching and fledging success, and nestling immune status, physiological and oxidative stress). This study yielded three major results. First, we found that heating the nest did not change the duration of incubation as compared to controls. Second, increasing nest temperature during incubation decreased nestling feeding behaviour but did not affect parental health in terms of body condition, immune status, physiological and oxidative stress. Third, nestling mass at hatching was greater but nestling mass gain was slower in heated nests than in control nests, resulting in similar fledging mass. The present study demonstrates that increased environmental temperatures during incubation influenced nestling development in the great tit and especially hatchling mass, which might produce long‐term life history consequences.  相似文献

A large body of theories on extra-pair paternity (EPP) in birds has proposed four main "genetic" hypotheses to explain this behaviour: the "good genes" hypothesis, the genetic diversity hypothesis, the genetic compatibility hypothesis and the fertility insurance hypothesis. Empirical tests have been scarce, mainly because high sample sizes are difficult to collect. We have tested these hypotheses in three Mediterranean populations of blue tits Parus caeruleus in which 50–68% of the broods contained extra-pair young. Results showed that the distribution of extra-pair young among broods was not random, and that survival to fledging of extra-pair young was higher than that of their within-pair sibs. These results support the idea of genetic effects benefiting extra-pair young. However, comparison of cuckolded and cuckolding males showed no significant difference in their body size, age, survival or relatedness with their paired females, and offspring morphometrics did not differ between extra-pair and within-pair young. We conclude that none of the genetic hypotheses can explain fully the high level of extra-pair paternity, at least in our populations of Mediterranean blue tits. We suggest that direct ecological benefits of EPP for females should be tested more often in correlative as well as experimental approaches.  相似文献

In an attempt to test predictions of the optimisation hypothesis of life history traits in birds, we estimated fitness consequences of brood size manipulations. Experiments were carried out over a period of 4 years in a Mediterranean population of blue tits Parus caeruleus which is confronted with a particular set of environmental constraints. Effects of brood size manipulation were investigated in relation to year-to-year variation in environmental conditions, especially caterpillar abundance. There was a strong variation in the effects of brood size manipulation depending on year. Most effects were on offspring quality (fledging mass, tarsus length). The absolute number of recruits did not significantly differ among categories (reduced, control, enlarged broods) but varied considerably among years. Females recruited from enlarged broods were of lower quality, started to breed later and laid fewer eggs than those recruited from control and reduced broods. Neither parental survival nor reproductive performances of adults in year n + 1 was affected by brood size manipulation in year n. Thus there was no evidence for a cost of reproduction in this population. Since the number of recruits did not depend on brood size manipulation (recruitment rates were higher in reduced broods), but recruits from reduced broods were of better quality compared with other groups, we conclude that adults lay a clutch that is larger than that which is predicted by the optimisation hypothesis. Producing more young could incur some penalties because offspring from large broods are of lower quality and less likely to recruit in the population. Two possible reasons why decision rules in this population seem to be suboptimal are discussed. Received: 10 March 1998 / Accepted: 1 July 1998  相似文献

Leishmaniosis is, with increasing frequency, reported as an opportunistic infection of immunosuppressed individuals. Re-activation of persistent parasites may be responsible for the disease in a number of these patients. Here, Toni Aebischer reviews some of the evidence for the implication of persistent Leishmania infections in recurrent disease with the emphasis on cutaneous leishmoniasis in humans and in the mouse model. The data suggest that parasite persistence is a common feature in Leishmania infections. The availability of on excellent laboratory model provides on opportunity to study this phenomenon in detail. The findings of these analyses are likely to be important for the identification of people at risk of developing recurrent disease and for the assessment of new therapies for relapsing leishmaniasis and might also have implications for the design of a future anti-Leishmania vaccine.  相似文献

Courtship role reversal in bush crickets: another role for parasites?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Simmons  L. W. 《Behavioral ecology》1994,5(3):259-266
The last decade has seen an increasing body of evidence in supportof the idea that parasites can play a role in sexual selection.Parasites have been shown to influence mate choice and matingcompetition. Here I demonstrate a further role for parasitesin that they can determine the courtship roles of males andfemales and thus the sex on which sexual selection acts. Malebush crickets, Requena verticalis, feed their mates during inseminationwith a nutritious meal, the spermatophylax, that increases femalefecundity. I show how the ability of males to donate nutrientswas reduced by increased intensities of infection of a protozoangut parasite. Further, increased intensity of infection reducedfemale fecundity. Mating trials showed that when females wereuninfected the typical courtship roles prevailed; females werethe coy, discriminating sex. However, when infected with gutparasites, females attempted to mate more often and males adoptedthe coy discriminative role in courtship. Thus it appeared thatmale donations were of greater importance for reproductivelyconstrained, infected females. The infection status of the malehad no influence on courtship role reversal supporting the ideathat proximate cues in female behavior determine the courtshiprole adopted by males. It is argued that parasites will be animportant determinant f courtship role reversal in any specieswhere male gifts influence female fecundity, and parasites constrainhost reproduction, because of the opposing way in which reproductiveconstraints will influence male and female mating frequency.  相似文献

Few studies have dealt with the importance of colours per se in warning signalling, with the use of a broader array of different colours. We tested the reactions of great tits (Parus major) to colour modifications (red, orange, yellow, white, blue, violet, and green) of the warning signal of the red firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus), preserving its typical black pattern. We used the edible Guyana spotted roach (Blaptica dubia) as the prey, each of which carried a paper sticker shield of a particular colour on its back. With such prey, the effects of the other traits of the red firebug (e.g. shape of the legs and antennae or chemical signals) on the birds’ reactions were removed. All of the conspicuous forms of the prey, possessing a black pattern, were protected against great tits better than the non-patterned brown control form. The level of protection decreased from those forms with colours similar to the model and commonly occurring in warning signals in nature (red, orange, yellow), through other conspicuous colours rarely occurring in warning signals in nature (white, violet, blue), to the colour which usually occurs as cryptic in nature (green). In the green form, repeated encounters were necessary to reach avoidance. Avoidance learning came to pass despite the fact that the presented prey was neither inedible nor distasteful.  相似文献

Breeding activities and molt are generally thought to be mutuallyexclusive in birds since both are energetically costly and arenormally separated in time. However, sometimes molt overlapswith breeding to some degree. A trade-off between adult somaticmaintenance functions (feather renewal) and parental care isthen to be expected. The consequences of this are largely unknown, and there are few studies that have shown any fitness costsof molt-breeding overlap. We investigated the consequences ofmolt-breeding overlap by removing first clutches of blue titParus casruleus pairs, thereby inducing late repeat clutches.Among the delayed pairs, a high proportion of males and somefemales started their molt already during incubation or nestlingfeeding. Molting males fed their nestlings to a lesser extentthan non-molting ones, and nestling mortality increased as adirect result of the early timing of male molt. Furthermore, the ability to raise an experimentally enlarged brood was negativelycoupled to the molt stage of the male. Our data thus provideevidence that molt-breeding overlap leads to fitness costs, and we discuss the results within the context of sexual conflictand the implications for optimization of avian reproductivedecisions  相似文献

Over the past decade or so, pore-forming proteins (PFPs) have been isolated from various immune cells and nonpathogenic bacteria. It is now becoming apparent that PFPs may also be produced by a number of parasites. Although far from definitive, the evidence currently available for the role of PFPs in the survival and pathogenesis by parasites in briefly presented by David Ojcius and John Ding-E Young.  相似文献

Synthetic molecules of the glitazone family are currently used in the treatment of type II diabetes. Glitazones also improve secondary pathologies that are frequently associated with insulin resistance such as the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Glitazones bind to the peroxysome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), a nuclear receptor which is highly expressed in adipose tissue. PPARgamma also binds natural ligands such as long-chain fatty acids. Recently, several groups have shown that PPARgamma is also highly expressed in ovarian granulosa cells, and that glitazones are able to modulate in vitro granulosa cell proliferation and steroidogenesis in several species. These recent data raise new questions concerning the underlying mechanism of the effect of glitazones on PCOS. One might hypothesize, as for other < glucophage > molecules such as metformin, that it is the general improvement of glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity by glitazones which indirectly, and via an unknown mechanism, ameliorates ovarian functionality. The data discussed here suggest now an alternative possibility, that glitazones act directly at the ovarian level. Moreover, PPARgamma also seems to play a key role in the maturation of the placenta. In particular, inactivation of PPARgamma in mice is lethal, since the foetus is unable to develop because of alterations of placental maturation. In women, the activation of PPARgamma in placenta leads to an increase of placental hormone secretion. Overall, these results raise some questions about the role of natural ligands of PPARgamma such as long chain fatty acids on female fertility and the interactions between energy metabolism and reproduction in general.  相似文献

Most temperate-zone species use photoperiod to coordinate breeding and ensure that offspring are born during favourable conditions. Although photoperiodic influences on the reproductive axis have been well characterized, the precise mechanisms by which photoperiodic information and other seasonal cues are integrated to regulate reproductive function remain less well specified. Two recently discovered neuropeptides, kisspeptin and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, have pronounced opposing influences on reproductive function. This paper will review recent evidence for a role of these peptides in seasonal reproduction and propose a theoretical framework by which these novel regulatory peptides may serve to regulate seasonal breeding. Understanding the mechanisms regulating appropriate changes in reproductive status will serve to advance a wide range of life science disciplines.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry in an insect host: a big role for big parasites?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thomas  Ward  & Poulin 《Ecology letters》1998,1(2):112-117
Parasites are expected to be associated with host developmental instability because developmentally unstable hosts may be more susceptible to, or more frequently exposed to, parasitic infections compared with developmentally stable ones, or because parasites may directly disrupt host development. In this study, we analysed the relationship between developmental stability in the weta Pleioplectron simplex (Orthoptera) and infections by hairworm and mermithid parasites. These parasites have a long development in their host and the size of adult worms exceeds the length of the host by a considerable amount (15–20 cm). For one character (femora) we found that fluctuating asymmetry was significantly higher in parasitized individuals compared with unparasitized ones, in each of two samples collected in different years. Because no relationship was observed between the level of fluctuating asymmetry and the parasite size or number, however, infection by hairworm and mermithid parasites could be more a consequence of developmental instability than a cause. For other characters (tibia, external and internal spines of femora), the level of fluctuating asymmetry between parasitized and unparasitized individuals was not significantly different. Our results are discussed in relation to ecological constraints met by hairworm and mermithid parasites to complete their life cycle.  相似文献

The role of parasites in explaining maintenance of polymorphism is an unexplored research avenue. In odonates, female-limited color polymorphism (one female morph mimicking the conspecific male and one or more gynochromatic morphs) is widespread. Here we investigated whether parasitism contributes to color polymorphism maintenance by studying six species of female dimorphic damselflies using large databases of field-collected animals. We predicted that androchrome females (male mimics) would be more intensively parasitized than gynochrome females which is, according to previous studies, counterbalanced by the advantages of the former when evading male harassment compared to gynochrome females. Here we show that in Ischnura denticollis and Enallagma novahispaniae, androchrome females suffer from a higher degree of parasitism than gynochromatic females, and contrary to prediction, than males. Thus, our study has detected a correlation between color polymorphism and parasitic burden in odonates. This leads us to hypothesize that natural selection, via parasite pressure, can explain in part how androchrome and gynochrome female color morphs can be maintained. Both morphs may cope with parasites in a different way: given that androchrome females are more heavily parasitized, they may pay a higher fecundity costs, in comparison to gynochrome females.  相似文献
