The establishment of MACC (Ceiling Values) and MACT (Time Weighted Average Values) for chemical substances permits a substantial more precise evaluation of the exposure to harmful substances at the work place as if only one limit value is given without reference to a Ceiling Value or a Time Weighted Average Value, respectively. The derivation of MACC- and MACT-Values is proposed from toxicometric data that are gained during animal experiments with chemical substances. For acutely toxic substances (e.g. irritants) the quotient F = MACC/MACT ought to be = 1. For cumulative acting substances the permissible relation of both values is determined from the magnitude of the zone of chronic effect (Zch) as F = 0.4. Zch. The condition MACC less than less than Limac takes into consideration at the same time. The frequency and the duration of MACT exceedings need not to be regulated with this procedure. A method is proposed for the derivation of the length of sampling periods necessary from the toxicological point of view starting from the Zch.  相似文献

Repeated sampling of rural maize stores in Benin was conducted to evaluate published parameters of a sequential sampling plan for a negative binomial distribution to determine pest status for Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky. A computer program was used to rerandomize the data and evaluate the effects, in terms of average sample number and error rates, of different sampling plan parameter values. With respect to P. truncatus, lower and upper thresholds of 0.2 and 1.0 insects per ear and parameter values of k = 0.2 and alpha = beta = 0.1 were found to be adequate. With respect to S. zeamais, lower and upper thresholds of 10 and 20 insects per ear and parameter values of k = 1.0 and i alpha = beta = 0.1 were found to be adequate. Simplified sampling rules were proposed in which 11 ears should be sampled and if no P. truncatus are found, the population is low; otherwise the Wald plan should be followed. Owing to the lower per capita rate of damage, effective simplified sampling rules for S. zeamais were difficult to construct. An evaluation of the visual assessment scale rising whole ears showed that a visual scale estimating percentage damage rather than percentage loss, might be easy to construct and preferable for traders. Further work is needed to improve the usefulness of the visual scale in pest management decision support.  相似文献

Abstract:  This work aimed to determine the economic injury levels and to establish sequential sampling plans for nymphs and adults of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci Genn. (Sternorrhyncha: Aleyrodidae) in tomato fields. Densities of nymphs and adults, as well as crop yield were evaluated in 13 commercial tomato fields to determine the economic injury levels. The whitefly nymphs were sampled by direct counting in a leaf from the lower part of the canopy and the adults were sampled by beating an apical leaf against a white plastic tray. The sequential sampling plan was based on data collected in eight commercial tomato fields. The validation of the sequential sampling plan was carried out based on the curves of operational characteristics and average sample numbers. The decisions reached with the conventional and the sequential sampling plans in 21 commercial fields were compared for the intended validation of the sequential plan. The economic injury levels were four nymphs per leaf and one adult per tray. The decisions taken based on the sequential sampling plan were similar to those obtained through the conventional sampling plan. Most of the decisions taken with the sequential sampling plan were obtained through the minimum number of seven samples per field for nymphs and 11 samples per field for adults, with reductions of 84.44% and 54.17% in the number of samples required to reach a decision with the sequential sampling plan compared with the conventional sampling plan.  相似文献

We briefly review findings from Brazilian settings where the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic among injection drug users (IDUs) seems to be decreasing, highlighting recent findings from Rio de Janeiro and discussing methodological alternatives. Former analyses using serologic testing algorithm for recent HIV seroconversion have shown that HIV incidence has been low in IDUs recruited by two different surveys carried out in Rio, where low injection frequencies and infection rates have been found among new injectors. The proportion of AIDS cases among IDUs in Rio has been fairly modest, compared to S?o Paulo and especially to the southernmost states. Notwithstanding, the interpretation of findings from serial surveys constitutes a challenge, magnified in the assessment of HIV spread among IDUs due to the dynamic nature of the drug scenes and limitations of sampling strategies targeting hard-to-reach populations. Assessment of epidemic trends may profit from the triangulation of data, but cannot avert biases associated with sampling errors. Efforts should be made to triangulate data from different sources, besides exploring specific studies from different perspectives. In an attempt to further assess the observed trends, we carried out original analyses using data from Brazilian AIDS databank.  相似文献

Since most rumors are harmful, how to control the spread of such rumors is important. In this paper, we studied the process of "immunization" against rumors by modeling the process of rumor spreading and changing the termination mechanism for the spread of rumors to make the model more realistic. We derived mean-field equations to describe the dynamics of the rumor spread. By carrying out steady-state analysis, we derived the spreading threshold value that must be exceeded for the rumor to spread. We further discuss a possible strategy for immunization against rumors and obtain an immunization threshold value that represents the minimum level required to stop the rumor from spreading. Numerical simulations revealed that the average degree of the network and parameters of transformation probability significantly influence the spread of rumors. More importantly, the simulations revealed that immunizing a higher proportion of individuals is not necessarily better because of the waste of resources and the generation of unnecessary information. So the optimal immunization rate should be the immunization threshold.  相似文献

During the last century, mankind has introduced electricity and during the very last decades, the microwaves of the modern communication society have spread a totally new entity--the radiofrequency fields--around the world. How does this affect biology on Earth? The mammalian brain is protected by the blood-brain barrier, which prevents harmful substances from reaching the brain tissue. There is evidence that exposure to electromagnetic fields at non thermal levels disrupts this barrier. In this review, the scientific findings in this field are presented. The result is a complex picture, where some studies show effects on the blood-brain barrier, whereas others do not. Possible mechanisms for the interactions between electromagnetic fields and the living organisms are discussed. Demonstrated effects on the blood-brain barrier, as well as a series of other effects upon biology, have caused societal anxiety. Continued research is needed to come to an understanding of how these possible effects can be neutralized, or at least reduced. Furthermore, it should be kept in mind that proven effects on biology also should have positive potentials, e.g., for medical use.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to quantify the spatial pattern and develop a sampling program for larvae of Lobesia botrana Denis and Schiffermüller (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), an important vineyard pest in northern Greece. Taylor's power law and Iwao's patchiness regression were used to model the relationship between the mean and the variance of larval counts. Analysis of covariance was carried out, separately for infestation and injury, with combined second and third generation data, for vine and half-vine sample units. Common regression coefficients were estimated to permit use of the sampling plan over a wide range of conditions. Optimum sample sizes for infestation and injury, at three levels of precision, were developed. An investigation of a multistage sampling plan with a nested analysis of variance showed that if the goal of sampling is focusing on larval infestation, three grape clusters should be sampled in a half-vine; if the goal of sampling is focusing on injury, then two grape clusters per half-vine are recommended.  相似文献

For many years now automotive exhaust catalysts have been used to reduce the significant amounts of harmful chemical substances generated by car engines, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Although they considerably decrease environmental contamination with the above-mentioned compounds, it is known that catalysts contribute to the environmental load of platinum metals (essential components of catalysts), which are released with exhaust fumes. Contamination with platinum metals stems mainly from automotive exhaust converters, but other major sources also exist. Since platinum group elements (PGEs): platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru) and iridium (Ir) seem to spread in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, they may pose a threat to animals and humans. This paper discusses the modes and forms of PGE emission as well as their impact on the environment and living organisms.  相似文献

Development of microbial biofilms and the recruitment of propagules on the surfaces of man-made structures in the marine environment cause serious problems for the navies and for marine industries around the world. Current antifouling technology is based on the application of toxic substances that can be harmful to the natural environment. For this reason and the global ban of tributyl tin (TBT), there is a need for the development of "environmentally-friendly" antifoulants. Marine microbes are promising potential sources of non-toxic or less-toxic antifouling compounds as they can produce substances that inhibit not only the attachment and/or growth of microorganisms but also the settlement of invertebrate larvae and macroalgal spores. However, so far only few antilarval settlement compounds have been isolated and identified from bacteria. In this review knowledge about antifouling compounds produced by marine bacteria and diatoms are summarised and evaluated and future research directions are highlighted.  相似文献

Medical geology is an emerging discipline that, broadly defined, examines the public health impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes. The scope and range of medical geology include: (1) identifying and characterizing natural and anthropogenic sources of harmful materials in the environment; (2) learning how to predict the movement and alteration of chemical, infectious, and other disease-causing agents over time and space; and (3) understanding how people are exposed to such materials and what can be done to minimize or prevent such exposure. Participants of a Medical Geology Working Group that met recently in Washington, DC, identified lessons learned to date in the development of this new field, noted research gaps that should be addressed, and recommended key priorities and directions for a sustainable future for medical geology.  相似文献

Gypsy moth is regarded as one of the top most harmful invasive species. Its invasion in the northeastern US has led to widespread forest defoliation, wildlife disruption and even a change in biogeochemical conditions over the area of 106 km2. Spread of gypsy moth has a few distinct features such as a patchy spatial distribution of the gypsy moth population, which is largely uncorrelated to the environmental heterogeneity, and a high variability (almost over an order of magnitude) in the spread rates. These features are usually explained by human-assisted dispersal, e.g. when masses of gypsy moth eggs are inadvertently transported by cars and vehicles. This theory, however, somewhat disagrees with the existence of the strong Allee effect that tends to wipe out small new colonies. In this paper, we suggest an alternative explanation that the patchy structure can result from the interplay between two natural factors such as wind dispersal and viral infection. In order to check this hypothesis, we describe the gypsy moth spread with a diffusive SI model and study its properties by means of extensive computer simulations. Interestingly, in a certain parameter range our model shows formation of spatial patterns that are qualitatively similar to those observed in the field. To find out the relevant parameter range, we make a careful review of available literature sources. For biologically meaningful parameter values, we then show that the rates of gypsy moth spread predicted by our model are in good agreement with the lower band of the rates observed in nature.  相似文献

This article deals with the development and application of a risk analysis approach regarding the importance and fate of shipwrecks in Greece. In the past few decades the potential harmful effects of wrecks and the materials and substances they carry, remaining on the sea bottom, have been realized and the issue of dealing with them has arisen. The methodology used in this article consists of three steps. The first step is to develop a dedicated database of shipwrecks in Greek waters. The second step focuses on the quasi-quantitative assessment of risk for each shipwreck individually through the introduction of implemented factors that have been modeled into the structure of a hierarchical fuzzy system. The analysis is concluded by determining the sources of uncertainty for the system and implementing an appropriate analysis to determine their relative importance. Finally, geographic information system (GIS) tools are used for the visualization of data and the analysis of results in geographic terms as well as for revealing geographic patterns and relationships.  相似文献

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of microbial origin are a complex mixture of biopolymers comprising polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, uronic acids, humic substances, lipids, etc. Bacterial secretions, shedding of cell surface materials, cell lysates and adsorption of organic constituents from the environment result in EPS formation in a wide variety of free-living bacteria as well as microbial aggregates like biofilms, bioflocs and biogranules. Irrespective of origin, EPS may be loosely attached to the cell surface or bacteria may be embedded in EPS. Compositional variation exists amongst EPS extracted from pure bacterial cultures and heterogeneous microbial communities which are regulated by the organic and inorganic constituents of the microenvironment. Functionally, EPS aid in cell-to-cell aggregation, adhesion to substratum, formation of flocs, protection from dessication and resistance to harmful exogenous materials. In addition, exopolymers serve as biosorbing agents by accumulating nutrients from the surrounding environment and also play a crucial role in biosorption of heavy metals. Being polyanionic in nature, EPS forms complexes with metal cations resulting in metal immobilization within the exopolymeric matrix. These complexes generally result from electrostatic interactions between the metal ligands and negatively charged components of biopolymers. Moreover, enzymatic activities in EPS also assist detoxification of heavy metals by transformation and subsequent precipitation in the polymeric mass. Although the core mechanism for metal binding and / or transformation using microbial exopolymer remains identical, the existence and complexity of EPS from pure bacterial cultures, biofilms, biogranules and activated sludge systems differ significantly, which in turn affects the EPS-metal interactions. This paper presents the features of EPS from various sources with a view to establish their role as central elements in bioremediation of heavy metals.  相似文献

Representative sampling of ant communities is time-consuming and laborious. Due to their manifold habitat requirements and sociobiological attributes, a suite of sampling methods is necessary to detect nearly all ant species in a given habitat. We analysed how well different combinations and intensities of sampling methods are suited to assess ant species richness and community patterns. Sampling occurred at 24 sites in mountain and floodplain habitats in Austria using pitfall traps, Winkler litter extraction, hand sampling of foragers, and colony sampling. Of these, pitfall traps delivered the largest species numbers. We drew 19 subsets of sampling approaches and compared these to the complete data. Many subsets that allowed for substantial reduction of work effort nonetheless reflected well the beta diversity patterns of the whole dataset. In contrast, alpha diversity assessment was more sensitive to reduced sampling effort. Pitfall traps turned out to be indispensable to collect ant species for biodiversity studies, but the optimal combination of sampling methods varied between habitat types. In rugged montane habitats pitfalls should be complemented at least by colony sampling. In floodplain forests the number of pitfall trap replicates can be reduced, but inclusion of Winkler samples is advisable.  相似文献

According to the EU Regulation 854/2004, sampling plans must be set up to monitor production areas for the level of okadaic acid (OA) equivalents in live mussel. The level of these toxins, which are produced by harmful algal blooms, must not exceed 160 μg/kg of raw meat (Regulation 853/2004/EC). A sampling plan assessment consists in obtaining an OC (Operating Characteristic) curve showing both consumer and producer risks. The first risk is the risk of opening a shellfish area for harvest while the contamination level is above the threshold; whereas the second risk is the risk of closing a shellfish area having a contamination level under the threshold. For sampling plan validation purposes, a classical mathematical method was improved for the prediction of variance as function of the mean contamination level thanks to prior knowledge of the theoretical distribution fitting the observed OA levels among individual mussels. Indeed, knowing that, thanks to a regression analysis of literature data, for the lognormal distribution the scale parameter was observed to be directly proportional to the location parameter, the regression bias could be lowered. Literature data from Norway and Sweden showed different levels of variability between contamination events and depuration. However, the highest variability level was chosen to propose a best fit sampling plan in order to have a better approach of reality. It consisted of taking two samples of 50 mussels (Mytilus sp.) for this geographic location (Norway and Sweden).  相似文献

Abstract:  A conventional sampling plan for the leafhopper Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore (Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae) in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is presented based on samples from 51 commercial fields. The research encompassed three phases. The first phase had the objective of determining the most suitable leaf to be used as a precise and representative sampling unit. In the second phase of the project, the available sampling methods for E. kraemeri were compared, including the approach identified in the first phase. In the third phase, the theoretical frequency distribution of the sampling data was assessed and the number of samples necessary for the sampling plan was established. The best leaves to sample adult leafhoppers were the fourth and the fifth from the apex, while the best leaf for sampling nymphs was the fifth from the apex. The best sampling technique for nymphs and adults was the beating of the apical leaves against a plastic tray. The sampling data obtained with this technique were fit to a negative binomial distribution with common aggregation parameter for adults ( K common = 1.04) and nymphs ( K common = 0.47). This sampling plan required 16.8 and 31.2 min to be carried out at an expense of US$ 0.31 and US$ 0.54 for sampling adults and nymphs in a field, respectively.  相似文献

Plankton is the basis of the entire aquatic food chain. Phytoplankton, in particular, occupies the first trophic level. Plankton performs services for the Earth: it serves as food for marine life, gives off oxygen and also absorbs half of the carbon dioxide from the Earth's atmosphere. The dynamics of a rapid (or massive) increase or decrease of plankton populations is an important subject in marine plankton ecology and generally termed as a 'bloom'. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have adverse effects on human health, fishery, tourism, and the environment. In recent years, considerable scientific attention has been given to HABs. Toxic substances released by harmful plankton play an important role in this context. In this paper, a mathematical model consisting of two harmful phytoplankton and zooplankton system will be discussed. The analytical findings will be verified through our experimental observations which were carried out on the eastern part of Bay of Bengal for the last three years.  相似文献
