The expression of biological rhythms was investigated in five populations of three different species of talitrid amphipods from various habitats in the Maremma Regional Park, Grosseto, Italy: Talitrus saltator (from a sandy beach and a canal), Orchestia montagui (form a Posidonia banquette), and O. gammarellus (from a cave entrance and a river bank). Locomotor activity rhythms were recorded in individual animals over 21 days in constant dark at a temperature of 18°±1°C. A high variability in rhythm expression was evident, not only among species and populations but also within populations and the activity pattern of individuals. Activity rhythms of T. saltator and O. montagui were similar, with a good definition and precise circadian periodicity, whereas O. gammarellus showed a high variability and low definition of the circadian rhythm. Significant differences were also observed between two populations of O. gammarellus and T. saltator from different habitats. Within the O. gammarellus species, a significantly higher percentage of active animals (p<0.001) was observed in the cave than the river‐bank population; within T. saltator, a significantly lower percentage of active animals (p<0.01) and higher percentage of periodic animals (p<0.05) was found in the canal than the sandy beach population. With reference to environmental stability and variability, the differences observed are explained as a need for plasticity to adapt to environmental changes.  相似文献

Allozymic variation at 21-23 loci was studied in 28 populations of Talitrus saltator, 23 populations of Orchestia montagui, 13 populations of O. stephenseni, and five populations of Platorchestia platensis from the Mediterranean Basin. Different levels of gene flow (Nmtheta) were detected within each species at the scale of the whole Mediterranean: O. montagui and P. platensis had low population structure, with levels of Nmtheta > or = 1, whereas the T. saltator and 0. stephenseni populations have values of Nmtheta < 1. The relationship between Nmtheta and geographic distance was analyzed to test for the presence of an isolation by distance pattern in the spatial genetic variation within each species. A model of isolation by distance is useful to describe the pattern of genetic structuring of study species at the scale of the whole Mediterranean: geographic distance explained from 28% to 70% of the variation in gene flow. In the Aegean area all species showed an island model of genetic structuring regardless of the levels of gene flow.  相似文献

Freshly adult individuals of two sympatric species, Orchestia gammarellus and Orchestia montagui, collected in spring from the supralittoral zone of Bizerte lagoon (Northern of Tunisia) at Menzel Jemil, were housed in a controlled environment cabinet. Locomotor activity rhythm was recorded in isolated individuals and groups by infrared actograph every 20 min by a data-logger, at a constant temperature of 18 ± 0.5 °C under constant darkness. According to double-plotted actograms and waveform curves, results showed the presence of two different locomotor patterns; in fact, individuals of O. gammarellus concentrated their activity during the hours of subjective night, whereas O. montagui were active during the subjective night and beyond the subjective dawn. Furthermore, whatever the species studied, periodogram analysis indicated a distinct circadian pattern of activity. Moreover, whatever the experiment condition is, the most clearly defined rhythms were found in O. gammarellus. In contrary to O. gammarellus, the group effect on the locomotor rhythm parameters seems to be less marked in O. montagui. On the other hand, a highly inter-individual variability was observed in the activity time for these two species and especially for O. montagui groups.  相似文献

Cu and Zn concentrations were determined for three talitrid amphipods, Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas), O. mediterranea Costa and Talitrus saltator (Montagu), collected at two-monthly intervals in 1987 from sites on Great Cumbrae Island, Firth of Clyde, Scotland. To account for size effects, log transformed Cu and Zn concentrations were regressed against log dry weight for each bimonthly sample of each species, and compared by analysis of covariance. Copper concentrations in O. gammarellus were significantly raised in March 1987, and lowered in November 1987. Copper concentrations in O. mediterranea and T. saltator were significantly lowered in November 1987. Cu concentrations differed interspecifically in the order O. gammarellus > O. mediterranea > T. saltator. There was no significant intraspecific seasonal variation in zinc concentration in any of the three species. Zn concentrations differed interspecifically in the order T. saltator > O. gammarellus > O. mediterranea.  相似文献

The circadian rhythms of serum luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone (T), free testosterone (fT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), oestradiol, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHA-s) have been investigated in 5 normal male adults and 6 elderly men. Circadian rhythms were detected statistically significant (p less than 0.05) by population mean cosinor analysis, for T, fT, cortisol and DHA-s in the young group. In the elderly population, serum cortisol showed a clear circadian rhythm, although with some phase modification, whereas DHA-s secretion lost its circadian rhythmicity. This demonstrates that ageing differently affects the two major adrenal functions, glucocorticoid and androgenic; further, the data suggest that an independent adrenal androgen-regulating system could be selectively impaired in the older subjects. In the elderly group the loss of T circadian rhythm was confirmed, but a statistically significant circadian rhythm of fT was recorded. It was characterized by a marked phase advance and not related with the SHBG modifications found in elderly men. This finding leads us to reconsider the role of fT, which appears more sensitive than total T, in studying circadian rhythm of gonadal androgen secretion.  相似文献

Physiological and behavioral phenomena of many animals are restricted to certain times of the day. Many organisms show daily rhythms in their mating. The daily fluctuation in mating activity of a few insects is controlled by an endogenous clock. The fruitfly, Drosophila, is the most suitable material to characterize the genetic basis of circadian rhythms of mating because some mutants with defective core oscillator mechanism, feedback loops, have been isolated. D. melanogaster wild-type display a robust circadian rhythm in the mating activity, and the rhythms are abolished in period or timeless null mutant flies (per(01) and tim(01)), the rhythms are generated by females but not males. Disconnected (disco) mutants which have a severe defect in the optic lobe and are missing lateral neurons show arrhythmicity in mating activities. Thus, the lateral neurons seem to be essential for the circadian rhythm in mating activity of Drosophila. Furthermore, an anti-phasic relation in circadian rhythms of the mating activity was detected between D. melanogaster and their sibling species D. simulans. The Queensland fruit flies or wild gypsy moth also show species-specific mating rhythm, suggesting that species-specific circadian rhythms in mating activity of insect appear to cause a reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Circadian regulation has a profound adaptive meaning in timing the best performance of biological functions in a cyclic niche. However, in cave-dwelling animals (troglobitic), a lack of photic cyclic environment may represent a disadvantage for persistence of circadian rhythms. There are different populations of cave-dwelling fish Astyanax mexicanus in caves of the Sierra El Abra, Mexico, with different evolutive history. In the present work, we report that fish collected from El Sótano la Tinaja show circadian rhythms of swimming activity in laboratory conditions. Rhythms observed in some of the organisms entrain to either continuous light–dark cycles or discrete skeleton photoperiods tested. Our results indicate that circadian rhythm of swimming activity and their ability to entrain in discrete and continuous photoperiods persist in some organisms that might represent one of the oldest populations of cave-dwelling A. mexicanus in the Sierra El Abra.  相似文献

Most human variables exhibit rhythms with an about 24 hour (circadian) period. Each rhythm can be characterized by its acrophase (calculated peak time of the cosine curve best fitting to the data), its amplitude and rhythm adjusted mean (MESOR). The sequential array of the rhythms' acrophases represents the temporal order of the human time structure. In the present work we used circadian rhythms of 24 chemical and 15 hormonal variables extracted from published studies which were done in a defined area of southeastern Europe (Romania). All studies had a comparable experimental design and were analyzed biochemically and statistically in the same laboratory. The acrophases of these rhythms obtained from both genders of different age groups (from the 2nd to the 9th decade of age) were subjected to multiple correlation test, cluster and principal coordinates analyses. The results show that the temporal order is affected both by gender and age, and evaluate the degree of the effect, offer a “chronbiologic fingerprint” for the examined groups and assist in dissecting rhythm variability among populations.  相似文献

In mammals, the circadian master clock generates daily rhythms of body temperature (T(b)) that act to entrain rhythms in peripheral circadian oscillators. The persistence and function of circadian rhythms during mammalian hibernation is contentious, and the factors that contribute to the reestablishment of rhythms after hibernation are unclear. We collected regular measures of core T(b) (every 34 min) and ambient light conditions (every 30 s) before, during, and following hibernation in free-living male arctic ground squirrels. Free-running circadian T(b) rhythms at euthermic levels of T(b) persisted for up to 10 d in constant darkness after animals became sequestered in their hibernacula in fall. During steady state torpor, T(b) was constant and arrhythmic for up to 13 d (within the 0.19°C resolution of loggers). In spring, males ended heterothermy but remained in their burrows at euthermic levels of T(b) for 22-26 d; patterns of T(b) were arrhythmic for the first 10 d of euthermia. One of four squirrels exhibited a significant free-running T(b) rhythm (τ = 22.1 h) before emergence; this squirrel had been briefly exposed to low-amplitude light before emergence. In all animals, diurnal T(b) rhythms were immediately reestablished coincident with emergence to the surface and the resumption of surface activity. Our results support the hypothesis that clock function is inhibited during hibernation and reactivated by exposure to light, although resumption of extended surface activity does not appear to be necessary to reinitiate T(b) cycles.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle and breeding biology of Talitrus saltator (Montagu), a supralittoral talitrid amphipod, were investigated over a 15 month period on a sandy beach in the Isle of Man. The species is shown to have an annual, univoltine reproductive cycle with a period of high reproductive activity between May and late August. Two generations are present throughout most of the year and the life spans of female and male T. saltator were calculated to be approximately 18 months and 21 months respectively. Initial juvenile growth was rapid, juveniles attaining sexual differentiation within three to four months of hatching. Juvenile growth rates averaged 5–5 mm in 100 days decreasing to 1–3 mm in 100 days after sexual differentiation at around 8.0 mm.
The relative brood size of incubating females was shown to be dependent on at least two factors, the length of the female and the stage of embryological development of the brood.
It is suggested that photoperiod is the major exogenous factor controlling gonadal maturation and the duration of reproductive activity in T. saltator.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms are ubiquitous in many organisms. Animals that are forced to be active around the clock typically show reduced performance, health and survival. Nevertheless, we review evidence of animals showing prolonged intervals of activity with attenuated or nil overt circadian rhythms and no apparent ill effects. We show that around-the-clock and ultradian activity patterns are more common than is generally appreciated, particularly in herbivores, in animals inhabiting polar regions and habitats with constant physical environments, in animals during specific life-history stages (such as migration or reproduction), and in highly social animals. The underlying mechanisms are diverse, but studies suggest that some circadian pacemakers continue to measure time in animals active around the clock. The prevalence of around-the-clock activity in diverse animals and habitats, and an apparent diversity of underlying mechanisms, are consistent with convergent evolution. We suggest that the basic organizational principles of the circadian system and its complexity encompass the potential for chronobiological plasticity. There may be trade-offs between benefits of persistent daily rhythms versus plasticity, which for reasons still poorly understood make overt daily arrhythmicity functionally adaptive only in selected habitats and for selected lifestyles.  相似文献

In order to explore the often neglected issue of the relationship between intra- and inter-subject variability of circadian rhythms, we evaluated the variability in four parameters of the circadian rhythm of body temperature under controlled laboratory conditions. To avoid the bias of potential selection of an idiosyncratic species, we conducted the study on four different species: the laboratory rat, the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, the domestic dog, and the horse. In rats and squirrels, three of the four parameters of the body temperature rhythm (mean level, amplitude, and regularity of waveform) showed greater inter-subject variability than intra-subject variability. The two variabilities were not different from each other in dogs and horses. Intra- and inter-subject variabilities of acrophase (time of peak) were not significantly different in any of the species, and their magnitudes were similar in all species, which suggests that acrophase is a very dependable parameter in the analysis of circadian rhythms, even though its overall variability is not particularly low.  相似文献

The circadian rhythms in plasma ACTH, TSH, LH and PRL were explored in sighted or blind, spayed and estrogen-implanted rats. A marked endogenous circadian rhythmicity was shown to persist in the blind animals for the 4 endocrine rhythms. The endogenous rhythms also kept very close reciprocal phase relationship as in the synchronized state, and they were peaking almost simultaneously, after 60 d. of free-running. Finally the endogenous hormonal rhythm maintained their usual phase relationships with the endogenous activity rhythm, so that the circadian phase of increased hormonal secretion coincided with the circadian resting phase of the sleep/wake rhythm. These results are discussed in the light of the alternate theory of one vs multiple but phase-locked circadian pacemakers driving endocrine and behavioral circadian rhythms.  相似文献

The relationship between daily rhythms of hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) and serotonin (5HT) contents and the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone (Comp. B) levels was studied in the rat. It was found that levels of hypothalamic NE, 5HT and plasma Comp. B exhibited distinct daily flucturations in the control condition. In animals treated with methamphetamine, the daily rhythms of hypothalamic 5HT contents and plasma Comp. B levels remained unchanged, whereas the daily rhythm of hypothalamic NE contents was completely abolished. As a result, it was suggested that the daily rhythm of hypothalamic NE is not functionally related to the circadian change of pituitary-adrenocortical activity.  相似文献

The gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a prosimian primate, exhibits seasonal rhythms strictly controlled by photoperiodic variations. Previous studies indicated that longevity can be altered by long-term acceleration of seasonal rhythms, providing a model for assessing various aspects of aging. To assess the effect of aging and accelerated aging on the circadian system of this primate, we compared the circadian rhythm of the locomotor activity in adult mouse lemurs (2-4.5 years, n = 9), aged mouse lemurs (5-9 years, n = 10), and adult mouse lemurs that had been exposed from birth to a shortened seasonal photoperiodic cycle (2-4.5 years, n = 7). Compared to adult animals, aged mouse lemurs showed a significant increase in intradaily variability and an advanced activity onset. Aging was characterized by a decrease in amplitude, with both a decrease in nocturnal activity and an increase in daytime activity. When maintained in constant dim red light, aged animals exhibited a shortening of the free-running period (22.8 +/- 0.1 h) compared to adult animals (23.5 +/- 0.1 h). A 3- to 5-year exposure to an accelerated seasonal photoperiodic rhythm ("annual" duration of 5 months) in accelerated mouse lemurs produced disturbances of the locomotor activity rhythm that resembled those of aged mouse lemurs, whether animals were studied in entrained or in free-running conditions. The present study demonstrated a weakened and fragmented locomotor activity rhythm during normal aging in this primate. Increasing the number of expressed seasonal cycles accelerated aging of parameters related to circadian rhythmicity in adult animals.  相似文献

Abstract

Talorchestia quoyana, a sand beach amphipod, shows a rhythm of locomotor activity controlled by a circadian clock and an inhibitory circatidal clock. This article reports on an investigation of the entrainment of the circadian dock to skeleton photoperiods. Four important mathematical models for circadian rhythms are examined with respect to the results of the entrainment experiments and to predictions from the phase response curve for Talorchestia. Significant differences between the models are described, and properties of circadian rhythms not accounted for by present models are outlined.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper was a detailed analysis of changes of circadian activity rhythms immediately before natural death. Investigations were carried out on individually housed female laboratory mice. Locomotor activity was measured by passive infrared detectors starting with an age of about 75 weeks up to death. At the beginning all animals had pronounced circadian activity rhythms with a main maximum during the dark time and a secondary one just after light-on. As compared to adult mice the amount of activity and the circadian range of oscillation were lower. The main maximum was phase advanced in most of the animals, so that the percentage of activity during dark time accounted for less than 50% of the total 24-h activity. Towards death the amount of activity and the amplitude decreased even more. A circadian rhythm was preserved however as long as the animals were active, although its synchronization with LD-Zeitgeber deteriorated markedly. The phase position of the main maximum became more unstable, leading in some cases to complete uncoupling (free-run with t &lt; 24 h). The secondary maximum in contrast was more stable in its phase and remained synchronized longer. The results show that in old age the mechanisms of synchronization break down earlier than the circadian rhythms. Therefore it seems possible to stabilize the circadian rhythms, e.g. by strengthening of Zeitgebers, which in turn may improve wellbeing and performance.  相似文献

Summary We have tested the hypothesis that the circadian oscillators in the eyes ofAplysia are coequal driver oscillators for the circadian locomotor rhythm. Three predictions based on this hypothesis were tested. Prediction 1: at a time when the phase difference between the eye rhythms is small, the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm in two eyed animals will be as great or greater than the amplitude in one eyed animals. Prediction 2: the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm of two eyed animals will decline under conditions in which the two eye rhythms become out of phase with each other. Prediction 3: the form of the locomotor rhythm will broaden or become biphasic in two eyed animals when the two eye rhythms become out of phase with each other.None of the predictions was confirmed. One eyedAplysia had higher amplitude locomotor rhythms than two eyedAplysia, even under conditions in which the two eye rhythms were probably not far out of phase with each other. There was no tendency for the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm of two eyed animals to decline under circumstances in which the phase difference between the two eye rhythms changes from less than 4 h to as much as 11.5 h. There was no tendency in two eyed animals for the locomotor rhythm to broaden or become biphasic as the eye rhythms became more out of phase with each other.The results led us to reject the hypothesis that the eyes are co-equal drivers for the locomotor rhythm. The ocular influence on locomotion is more likely to be mediated via mechanisms in the central nervous system that do not faithfully conserve the phase of the eye rhythms. The rhythms of activity across the 24-h sleep-wake cycle, determined in part by the circadian clock, change with aging. Few large-scale studies measured the activity rhythm objectively in the general population. The present population-based study in middle-aged and elderly persons evaluated how activity rhythms change with age, and additionally investigated sociodemographics, mental health, lifestyle, and sleep characteristics as determinants of rhythms of activity. Activity rhythms were measured objectively with actigraphy. Recordings of at least 96?h (138?±?14?h, mean?±?SD) were collected from 1734 people (age: 62?±?9.4?yrs) participating in the Rotterdam Study. Activity rhythms were quantified by calculating interdaily stability, i.e., the stability of the rhythm over days, and intradaily variability, i.e., the fragmentation of the rhythm relative to its 24-h amplitude. We assessed age, gender, presence of a partner, employment, cognitive functioning, depressive symptoms, body mass index (BMI), coffee use, alcohol use, and smoking as determinants. The results indicate that older age is associated with a more stable 24-h activity profile (β?=?0.07, p?=?0.02), but also with a more fragmented distribution of periods of activity and inactivity (β?=?0.20, p?<?0.001). Having more depressive symptoms was related to less stable (β?=??0.07, p?=?0.005) and more fragmented (β?=?0.10, p?<?0.001) rhythms. A high BMI and smoking were also associated with less stable rhythms (BMI: β?=??0.11, p?<?0.001; smoking: β?=??0.11, p?<?0.001) and more fragmented rhythms (BMI: β?=?0.09, p?<?0.001; smoking: β?=?0.11, p?<?0.001). We conclude that with older age the 24-h activity rhythm becomes more rigid, whereas the ability to maintain either an active or inactive state for a longer period of time is compromised.
