Motivations of two individuals governed by a satisfaction function are assumed to determine their respective “efforts”, which result in the production of “output”, i.e., objects of satisfaction. In previous papers the sharing of output was prescribed in advance. In the present article, however, the sharing formula itself is determined to a certain extent by the satisfaction function. The rate of remuneration per unit of output for each individual is taken to be proportional to the derivative of the satisfaction of the other individual with respect to the effort of the first. The formulation of this condition leads to a partial differential equation whose solutions determine the sharing formula. Sharing determined in this way is referred to as sharing according to the Condition of Mutual Need (C.M.N.). Satisfaction resulting from five different situations are the computed and compared: (1) an individual producing and consuming alone; (2) two individuals sharing equally and neither taking the “initiative” to determine the optimum output; (3) sharing determined by C.M.N. with optimum output determined as in (2); (4) equal sharing but with one individual taking “initiative” in determining optimal output; and (5) sharing determined by C.M.N. and optiml output by the “initiative” of one individual. further considerations concern conditions imposed on the arbitrary function occurring in the solution of the above-mentioned partial differential equation.  相似文献

We present the minimum set of requirements necessary and sufficient to represent the foraging behaviour of an animal, and its utilisation of food, in order to explore the emergent properties of behaviour that allow animals to reduce their hunger. We present an individual-based model of foraging that provides a simple quantification of the requirements, which is sufficiently simple to yield some analytical results. Complex interactions beyond the scope of analysis have been explored through simulating animals foraging in regenerating patchy environments. In most cases the populations pass into equilibrium distributions which appear to be stable. The equilibria always approximate closely to the ideal free distribution, although typically with a small degree of undermatching. (Undermatching is the term applied to the departure from the ideal free distribution caused by a smaller proportion of the population than expected occupying areas with a higher than average regeneration rate). The model therefore implies that the distribution, hitherto accounted for in terms of ESSs may, in fact, be simply an effect of the animal's utilization of the food it collects to reduce its hunger. The model defines a specific feeling rate, v, the rate at which an animal can feed on a unit of food. This is a function of three parameters, v1, the specific feeding rate when alone, v(infinity), the rate, possibly zero, at which it can feed in the presence of an indefinitely large number of conspecifics, and n1/2, the number of conspecifics that cause v to take the value (v1+v(infinity)/2. Exploitation competition in the absence of interference is represented by setting v1 = v(infinity). Differences in competitive ability in exploitation have been represented by simulating animals with a range of values of v1, those with the larger values, feeding more rapidly, being the more effective competitors, and those with the lower values being the less effective. Interference competition is represented by setting v1 > v(infinity) and social facilitation by v1 < v(infinity). Individual differences in the strength of interaction are represented by different values of n(1/2). In competition, the animals with the larger values of n(1/2) are the more effective competitors: in facilitation, they are the less effective facilitators. The addition of physiological and behavioural detail makes very little alteration to the emergent equilibria, always close to the ideal free distribution, almost always showing undermatching.  相似文献

The paper studies the likely degree of relationship between two individuals who could possibly be half sibs. The possible common ancestor was dead, which further complicated the problem. The model used was devised by Thompson [in Rao and Chakraborty (eds): Handbook of Statistics, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1991] and establishes a correspondence between the possible degree of relationship and certain feasible probability distributions on the number of identical by descent genes. Two statistical approaches are considered: the classical one, in which the maximum likelihood estimation for the parameters of Thompson's model are obtained, and the Bayesian one, in which the test of the hypothesis of half sibs is accompanied by a robustness study.  相似文献

Host-specific effect of P1 exchange between two potyviruses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The potyviruses Plum pox virus (PPV) and Tobacco vein mottling virus (TVMV) have distinct host ranges and induce different symptoms in their common herbaceous hosts. To test the relevance of the P1 protein in host compatibility and pathogenicity, hybrid viruses were constructed in which the P1 coding sequence of PPV was completely or partially replaced by the corresponding sequences from TVMV. Infections induced by these chimeric viruses revealed that the TVMV P1 and a PPV/TVMV hybrid P1 proteins are functionally equivalent in herbaceous plants to the P1 protein of a PPV isolate adapted to these hosts, in spite of having high sequence divergence. Moreover, the presence of TVMV P1 sequences enhanced the competence of a low-infectivity PPV-D-derived chimera in Nicotiana clevelandii . Conversely, all PPV/TVMV hybrids were unable to infect Prunus persicae , a specific host for PPV, suggesting that TVMV P1 is not functionally competent in this plant. Together, these data highlight the importance of the P1 protein in defining the virus host range.  相似文献

The SeqA protein binds to the post-replicative forms of the origins of replication of the Escherichia coli chromosome (oriC) and the P1 plasmid (P1oriR) at hemimethylated GATC adenine methylation sites. It appears to regulate replication by preventing premature reinitiation. However, SeqA binding is not exclusive to replication origins: different fragments with hemimethylated GATC sites can bind SeqA in vitro when certain rules apply. Most notably, more than one such site must be present on a bound fragment. The protein appears to recognize individual hemimethylated sites, but must undergo an obligate cooperative interaction with a nearby bound protein for stable binding. SeqA contacts both DNA strands in a discrete patch at each hemimethylated GATC sequence. All four GATC bases are contacted and are essential for binding. Although the recognized sequence is symmetrical, the footprint on the methylated strand is always broader, suggesting that the bound protein is positioned asymmetrically with its orientation dictated by the position of the unique methyl group. Studies of alternative spacings and relative orientations of adjacent sites suggest that each site may be recognized by a symmetrical dimer with an induced asymmetry in one of the subunits similar to that seen with certain type II restriction endonucleases.  相似文献

Low density lipoproteins (LDL), collected from 32 normal male subjects (aged 30-60), were subfractionated by high resolution ion exchange chromatography (IE-HPLC). By this procedure two LDL subfractions were eluted. The first corresponds to normal LDL (nLDL); while the second one corresponds to a more electronegative subfraction, called LDL-. The mean percentage contribution of LDL- to native plasma LDL was of 3.9% (range 0.5-9.8%). The percentage concentration of LDL- in total native LDL did not correlate with plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol, whereas a significant negative correlation with high density lipoprotein cholesterol was found (r = -.38; p less than .05). LDL- was negatively correlated with LDL phospholipids (r = -.59; p less than .001), and with the LDL vitamin E content (r = -.63; p less than .001), and positively correlated with LDL proteins (r = -.35; p less than .05) and the content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in total LDL (r = .43; p less than .05). The TBARS molar content of LDL- was three times higher than in nLDL, with a mean concentration in LDL- of 7.3 mol/mol lipoprotein. By preparative IE-HPLC significant differences of the LDL- chemical composition were observed. The percentage content of cholesterol esters and of phospholipids was decreased, whereas proteins and free cholesterol were increased. Analysis by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that besides apolipoprotein B-100 there was evidence of peptides with a higher molecular weight in LDL-.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Several types of structurally homologous high voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (L-, P-and N-type) have been identified via biochemical, pharmacological and electrophysiological techniques. Among these channels, the cardiac L-type and the brain BI-2 Ca2+ channel display significantly different biophysical properties. The BI-2 channel exhibits more rapid voltage-dependent current activation and inactivation and smaller single-channel conductance compared to the L-type Ca2+ channel. To examine the molecular basis for the functional differences between the two structurally related Ca2+ channels, we measured macroscopic and single-channel currents from oocytes injected with wild-type and various chimeric channel 1 subunit cRNAs. The results show that a chimeric channel in which the segment between S5-SS2 in repeat IV of the cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel, was replaced by the corresponding region of the BI-2 channel, exhibited macroscopic current activation and inactivation time-courses and single-channel conductance, characteristic of the BI-2 Ca2+ channel. The voltage-dependence of steady-state inactivation was not affected by the replacement. Chimeras, in which the SS2-S6 segment in repeat III or IV of the cardiac channel was replaced by the corresponding BI-2 sequence, exhibited altered macroscopic current kinetics without changes in single-channel conductance. These results suggest that part of the S5-SS2 segment plays a critical role in determining voltage-dependent current activation and inactivation and single-channel conductance and that the SS2-S6 segment may control voltage-dependent kinetics of the Ca2+ channel.  相似文献

Behavioural syndromes are correlations between behaviours in different functional contexts. Behavioural syndromes are attracting the attention of evolutionary biologists because they mean that different behaviours might not be free to evolve independently of one another. In a landmark study, Huntingford (1976) showed that individual stickleback which were bold toward predators were also aggressive toward conspecifics and active in an unfamiliar environment. Here, I revisited the activity-aggression-boldness syndrome in stickleback and tested the hypothesis that correlations between behaviours might act as evolutionary constraints. I measured a suite of behaviours on wild-caught individuals and their offspring from two different populations and calculated heritabilities and genetic correlations between the different behaviours. I found that these behaviours were phenotypically and genetically correlated in one population but not another. On average, boldness and aggression were negatively related to each other across the populations. These results suggest that behavioural syndromes don't always act as evolutionary constraints.  相似文献

Various methods, including random regression, structured antedependence models, and character process models, have been proposed for the genetic analysis of longitudinal data and other function-valued traits. For univariate problems, the character process models have been shown to perform well in comparison to alternative methods. The aim of this article is to present an extension of these models to the simultaneous analysis of two or more correlated function-valued traits. Analytical forms for stationary and nonstationary cross-covariance functions are studied. Comparisons with the other approaches are presented in a simulation study and in an example of a bivariate analysis of genetic covariance in age-specific fecundity and mortality in Drosophila. As in the univariate case, bivariate character process models with an exponential correlation were found to be quite close to first-order structured antedependence models. The simulation study showed that the choice of the most appropriate methodology is highly dependent on the covariance structure of the data. The bivariate character process approach proved to be able to deal with quite complex nonstationary and nonsymmetric cross-correlation structures and was found to be the most appropriate for the real data example of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.  相似文献

The longitudinal and transverse relaxation curves of sodium undergoing exchange between two sites are presented. When the two sites are ‘bound’ and ‘free’ sodium respectively, the relaxation curves are, in general, not exponential. It is shown that in some cases only one exponential decay could be detected experimentally though the true decay curve is much more complicated. In such cases where the population of ‘free’ and ‘bound’ sodium are equal, only 40–70% of the total intensity would be detected, depending on the lifetime of sodium in the two sites. It is also shown that the fast exchange approximation, usually applied in the interpretation of sodium relaxation curves, might lead to wrong conclusions.Measurements of sodium relaxation times in halotolerant bacteria show that T1 and T2 are different and frequency-dependent. The intensity of the sodium signal is 40% of the tota sodium concentration. It was possible to simulate the relaxation behaviour and intensity measurements by applying the following model. There are three types of sodium: the extracellular sodium (A) which exchanges with part of the intracellular sodium (B) and a fraction (C) which is bound but does not exchange with the extracellular sodium. It was possible to estimate the physical properties of sodium at site B. The quadrupole coupling constant (e2qQ/h?)B = 9 · 106rad/s, the correlation time ⊥cB = 5.5 · 10?7 s and the lifetime of sodium at site B, ⊥B = 6 · 10?4 s.  相似文献

A methodology is introduced for numerical evaluation, with any given accuracy, of the cumulative probabilities of the proportion of genome shared identical by descent (IBD) on chromosome segments by two individuals in a grandparent-type relationship. Programs are provided in the popular software package Maple for rapidly implementing such evaluations in the cases of grandchild-grandparent and great-grandchild-great-grandparent relationships. Our results can be used to identify chromosomal segments that may contain disease genes. Also, exact P values in significance testing for resemblance of either a grandparent with a grandchild or a great-grandparent with a great-grandchild can be calculated. The genomic continuum model, with Haldane's model for the crossover process, is assumed. This is the model that has been used recently in the genetics literature devoted to IBD calculations. Our methodology is based on viewing the model as a special exponential family and elaborating on recent research results for such families.  相似文献
