White Leghorn pullets reared in floor pens and high-density cages were compared for behavioral traits and changes in body weights during the initial 2 or 3 weeks after being placed in multiplehen cages during late adolescence. Information on behavior was obtained from 48 pullets kept in 6, 8-bird cages during Days 1, 4 and 15 in Experiment 1, and from 80 pullets kept in 16, 5-bird cages during Days 1 and 7 or 8 in Experiment 2.

In Experiment 1, floor-reared pullets showed significantly more crouching, less movement and lower feed consumption than cage-reared pullets during Day 1. By Day 4, floor-reared pullets still consumed significantly less feed, but by Day 15, no differences were found for crouching, movement or feed eaten. Cage-reared pullets had more feather-pecking on Day 1 but less on Day 15 than floor-reared ones. Pullets from the two rearing environments did not differ in post-housing daily gain in body weight.

In Experiment 2, floor-reared pullets had significantly fewer feeding bouts during Day 1, but they did not differ from cage-reared pullets during Days 7 or 8. Although pullets from floor-pens fed significantly less frequently, they had longer durations of feeding bouts, so that total time feeding did not differ from that of cage-reared pullets. Diurnal feeding patterns changed significantly from Day 1 to Day 7 or 8. Correlation coefficients between measures of individual pullet's feeding behavior and body weight at housing did not differ significantly from zero. Duration of individuals' feeding bouts on Day 7 or 8 was moderately and significantly correlated with their body-weight gain for the first 21 days after housing. Gains in body weight did not differ for pullets from the two rearing treatments.

Most aggressive acts occurred just inside the front of the cages, adjacent to the feed trough; few were seen directly over the feed. Agonistic activity and percentage of dominance relationships known were greater among floor-reared than among cage-reared pullets after transfer to laying-house cages. Decreases in frequency of aggressive acts occurred from Day 1 to Day 7 or 8 for pullets from both rearing environments.  相似文献

Orogastric tube feeding is indicated for neonates with impaired ability to ingest and can be administered by intermittent bolus or continuous schedule. Our aim was to determine whether feeding modalities affect muscle protein deposition and to identify mechanisms involved. Neonatal pigs were overnight fasted (FAS) or fed the same amount of food continuously (CON) or intermittently (INT; 7 × 4 h meals) for 29 h. For 8 h, between hours 20 and 28, pigs were infused with [(2)H(5)]phenylalanine and [(2)H(2)]tyrosine, and amino acid (AA) net balances were measured across the hindquarters. Insulin, branched-chain AA, phenylalanine, and tyrosine arterial concentrations and whole body phenylalanine and tyrosine fluxes were greater for INT after the meal than for CON or FAS. The activation of signaling proteins leading to initiation of mRNA translation, including eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)4E·eIF4G complex formation in muscle, was enhanced by INT compared with CON feeding or FAS. Signaling proteins of protein degradation were not affected by feeding modalities except for microtubule-associated protein light chain 3-II, which was highest in the FAS. Across the hindquarters, AA net removal increased for INT but not for CON or FAS, with protein deposition greater for INT. This was because protein synthesis increased following feeding for INT but remained unchanged for CON and FAS, whereas there was no change in protein degradation across any dietary treatment. These results suggest that muscle protein accretion in neonates is enhanced with intermittent bolus to a greater extent than continuous feeding, mainly by increased protein synthesis.  相似文献

The development of the gastric acid secretory response to pentagastrin was studied using 56 Large White x Landrace pigs, 0-36 days of age, 1.1-13.3 kg body-weight, obtained from 12 litters. Gastric acid secretory capacity was measured using a gastric perfusion technique and intravenous infusion of pentagastrin at dose rates of 2, 4 and 8 micrograms/h per kg. Significant positive linear correlations were found between stomach weight and age, and between stomach weight and body-weight during the 36 day period. The stomach weight to body-weight ratio increased for the first 3 days of age and then decreased during the following 33 days. Basal acid secretion was detected in all unsuckled pigs (n = 9), 2- to 8-h old. Maximal acid outputs in response to pentagastrin in these pigs were 0.16 +/- 0.02 mmol/kg body-weight and 0.034 +/- 0.001 mmol/g stomach weight. For the 56 pigs, significant linear correlations were found between maximal acid output and age, maximal acid output and body-weight, and maximal acid output and stomach weight. There was a significant linear increase in maximal acid output per unit stomach weight during the first 7 days of age, but during the subsequent 29 days the pattern of increase in gastric secretory capacity was slower and curvilinear. In the oldest nine pigs, 24-36 days of age, maximal acid outputs were 0.974 +/- 0.058 mmol/kg body-weight and 0.234 +/- 0.016 mmol/g stomach weight which represents a six to seven-fold increase compared with those determined in pigs at birth. Comparison of gastric acid secretory capacity determined under anaesthesia with that in conscious pigs showed that anaesthesia appeared to suppress basal output but had no effect on pentagastrin stimulated output. Comparison of response to histalog (betazole HCl) and pentagastrin indicated that newborn pigs were more sensitive to histalog but in pigs 9-38 days of age, there were no significant differences in responsiveness to the two secretagogues. These results show that gastric sensitivity to pentagastrin increases rapidly in the first week of life, that the stomach of the newborn pig is more sensitive to histalog than pentagastrin and that studies of the effect of pentagastrin on acid secretion, done under anaesthesia, are comparable to those in the conscious pig.  相似文献

Feeding behavior, in an ad libitum situation on potato plants in the laboratory, was continuously observed for approximately 7 h/day on 2 successive days for 18 adult femaleLeptinotarsa decemlineata. Additional behaviors were also recorded including resting, walking, biting, local movements, grooming, defecating, and regurgitating. These data were used to calculate a time budget for the various behaviors. The feeding data were analyzed to describe the structure of feeding for young adult females on their normal host plant. The criterion for a meal (minimum intermeal interval) was determined to be 286 s. This criterion was used to distinguish between intra- and intermeal interruptions in feeding for all subsequent analyses. Meals taken from leaves that were young, medium aged, or old did not differ, but on average beetles took 60% of their meals from young leaves. Meal size and meal duration were equally good predictors of when a meal would end. Feeding from stems was a prominent feature for most beetles. The stem meals had much longer durations than leaf meals, but stem feeding did not affect subsequent leaf feeding. The structure of feeding by these beetles is compared with that found in other insects, especiallyLocusta migratoria.  相似文献

Residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the difference between observed and expected feed intake based on growth and backfat, has been used to investigate genetic variation in feed efficiency in cattle, poultry and pigs. However, little is known about the biological basis of differences in RFI in pigs. To this end, the objective of this study was to evaluate the fifth generation of a line of pigs selected for reduced RFI against a randomly selected Control line for performance, carcass and chemical carcass composition and overall efficiency. Here, emphasis was on the early grower phase. A total of 100 barrows, 50 from each line, were paired by age and weight (22.6 ± 3.9 kg) and randomly assigned to one of four feeding treatments in 11 replicates: ad libitum (Ad), 75% of Ad (Ad75), 55% of Ad (Ad55) and weight stasis (WS), which involved weekly adjustments in intake to keep body weight (BW) constant for each pig. Pigs were individually penned (group housing was used for selection) and were on treatment for 6 weeks. Initial BW did not significantly differ between the lines (P > 0.17). Under Ad feeding, the low RFI pigs consumed 8% less feed compared with Control line pigs (P < 0.06), had less carcass fat (P < 0.05), but with no significant difference in growth rate (P > 0.85). Under restricted feeding, low RFI pigs under the Ad75 treatment had a greater rate of gain while consuming the same amount of feed as Control pigs. Despite the greater gain, no significant line differences in carcass composition or carcass traits were observed. For the WS treatment, low RFI pigs had similar BW (P > 0.37) with no significant difference in feed consumption (P > 0.32). Overall, selection for reduced RFI has decreased feed intake, with limited differences in growth rate but reduced carcass fat, as seen under Ad feeding. Collectively, results indicate that the effects of selection for low RFI are evident during the early grower stage, which allows for greater savings to the producer.  相似文献

The goal of this research was to determine whether directing expression of an insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) transgene specifically to striated muscle would alter the growth characteristics in swine. Transgenic pigs were produced with a fusion gene composed of avian skeletal alpha-actin regulatory sequences and a cDNA encoding human IGF-I. Six founder transgenic pigs were mated to nontransgenic pigs to produce 11 litters of G1 transgenic and sibling control progeny. Birth weight, weaning weight, and proportion of pig survival did not differ between transgenic and control pigs. The ADG of pigs as they grew incrementally from 20 to 60 kg, 60 to 90 kg, and 90 to 120 kg, respectively, did not significantly differ between transgenic and control pigs. Efficiency of feed utilization (gain:feed) was also similar for transgenic and control pigs. Plasma IGF-I and porcine growth hormone (pGH) concentrations were determined at 60, 90, and 120 kg body weight. Plasma IGF-I concentrations were 19% higher in transgenic gilts than control gilts and 11.1% higher in transgenic boars than control boars (P=0.0005). Plasma IGF-I concentrations for boars were also higher than for gilts (P=0.0001). At 60, 90, and 120 kg body weight each pig was scanned by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to derive comparative estimates of carcass fat, lean, bone content of the live animal. Control pigs had more fat and less lean tissue than transgenic pigs at each of the scanning periods and the difference became more pronounced as the pigs grew heavier (P<0.005 at each weight). Transgenic pigs also had a slightly lower percentage of bone than control pigs (P<0.05 at each weight). While daily rates of lean tissue accretion did not differ for transgenic and control pigs, daily rates of fat accretion were lower in transgenic pigs than in control pigs (P<0.05). Based on these results we conclude that expression of IGF-I in the skeletal muscles gradually altered body composition as pigs became older but did not have a major affect on growth performance.  相似文献

Tail docking of pigs is a routine procedure on farms to help control tail-biting behavior; however, docking can cause pain. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of local or general anesthesia on the physiology (experiment 1) and behavior (experiment 2) of tail docked pigs. Pigs were allocated to one of six treatment groups: (i) sham docking (CON); (ii) docking using conventional cutting (CUT) with side-cutting pliers; (iii) CUT docking plus local anesthesia injected immediately before docking (LA); (iv) CUT docking plus short-acting local anesthesia applied topically to the tail wound (SHORT); (v) CUT docking plus long-acting anesthesia applied topically to the tail wound (LONG) and (vi) CUT docking while the pig was anesthetized with carbon dioxide gas (CO(2)). In experiment 1, blood samples were collected from pigs (10 pigs per treatment) before and 30, 60 and 120 min after docking to measure leukocyte counts and percentages and cortisol concentrations. In experiment 2, the above treatments were repeated (10 pigs per treatment); the percentage of stress vocalizations were recorded during the administration of the treatments and behavior was recorded for up to 120 min after docking or handling. All pigs were weighed before and 24 h after docking and wound healing was recorded until weaning. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was greater (P < 0.05) in CUT, LA, SHORT and LONG compared with CON pigs. At 30 min, cortisol concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) in CUT, LA, LONG and CO(2) compared with CON pigs. Cortisol concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) between SHORT and CON pigs 30 min after docking. Cortisol concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) among pigs given pain relief at the time of docking compared with pigs' docked without pain relief. Body weight change and wound scores did not differ (P > 0.05) among treatments. The percentage of stress vocalizations increased (P < 0.05) in CUT, SHORT and LONG, but not in CON, LA and CO(2) pigs in response to docking or handling. The percentage of time pigs spent lying without contact after docking tended to be greater (P = 0.06) in CUT pigs compared with all other docking treatments and CON pigs. In this study, none of the anesthesia treatments tested were effective at significantly changing the physiological or behavioral response to tail docking in pigs.  相似文献

We measured diurnal rhythms of food intake, as well as body weight and composition, while varying three major classes of sex-biasing factors: activational and organizational effects of gonadal hormones, and sex chromosome complement (SCC). Four Core Genotypes (FCG) mice, comprising XX and XY gonadal males and XX and XY gonadal females, were either gonad-intact or gonadectomized (GDX) as adults (2.5 months); food intake was measured second-by-second for 7 days starting 5 weeks later, and body weight and composition were measured for 22 weeks thereafter. Gonadal males weighed more than females. GDX increased body weight/fat of gonadal females, but increased body fat and reduced body weight of males. After GDX, XX mice had greater body weight and more fat than XY mice. In gonad-intact mice, males had greater total food intake and more meals than females during the dark phase, but females had more food intake and meals and larger meals than males during the light phase. GDX reduced overall food intake irrespective of gonad type or SCC, and eliminated differences in feeding between groups with different gonads. Diurnal phase of feeding was influenced by all three sex-biasing variables. Gonad-intact females had earlier onset and acrophase (peak) of feeding relative to males. GDX caused a phase-advance of feeding, especially in XX mice, leading to an earlier onset of feeding in GDX XX vs. XY mice, but earlier acrophase in GDX males relative to females. Gonadal hormones and SCC interact in the control of diurnal rhythms of food intake.  相似文献

The pattern of drinking behaviour in pigs, and the influence of social factors such as competition on this behaviour, have been poorly documented. If competition for access to a limited resource is substantial, access to that resource may be allocated disproportionately to different members of a group. Priority may be based on a dominance hierarchy, or on physical characteristics, such as weight. The pattern of drinking behaviour was examined and the effect of pig liveweight on drinking behaviour under conditions likely to produce different levels of competition was investigated. Four replicates of a 2x2 factorial design of two group sizes (20 vs. 60) and two drinker:pig ratios (1:10 vs. 1:20) used a total of 640 growing pigs (start weight 36+/-5.0 kg). The drinking behaviour, skin lesion score and performance of nine focal pigs (three each of heavy (41.9 S.E.M. 0.57 kg), medium (35.7 S.E.M. 0.51 kg) and light weight (30.9 S.E.M. 0.63 kg)) per pen were recorded. For all focal pigs, the maximum time spent at the drinkers occurred between the 1800 and 1900 h and the minimum time between 0700 and 0800 h. The mean number of drinking bouts per pig per day was 30.9 S.E.M. 1.41, the median bout length was 21 s and the mean daily duration spent at the drinkers was 832 s. The frequency of visits to the drinkers, drinking bout duration and daily drinking time were affected by group size and drinker allocation, but not by weight or the interaction of treatments and weight. The diurnal spread of drinking was similar for each of the four treatment combinations and each weight category. Heavy pigs had the greatest number of lesions, and light weight pigs the least (13.2 vs. 8.8 S.E.D. 1.18, P<0.005), but this was not affected by the four treatment combinations. Lesion score correlated poorly with the parameters of drinking behaviour. The treatments, in isolation, or in interaction with weight, did not affect performance. No treatment encouraged sufficient competition to compromise the drinking behaviour, social behaviour or performance of the lightest animals in the pen.  相似文献

Fifty-six weaner and growing-finishing Large White × Landrace pigs were used in two growth studies and a digestibility study to determine the value of undecorticated cottonseed meal (UCSM) as a protein supplement replacing soya bean meal (SBM). In a 35-day feeding experiment with pigs averaging 18.8 kg, four lots of six pigs were individually fed on isonitrogenous diets containing 0, 10, 20 and 30% UCSM. Daily feed intake (FI) did not differ significantly between treatments. Daily gain and feed/gain did not differ significantly between the control and the 10% UCSM diets but the control group gained significantly more than the 20 or 30% UCSM diets (P < 0.05).

In a second growth experiment lasting 35 days, 24 cross-bred pigs averaging 53.1 kg were fed on diets containing 0, 20, 30 and 41.1% UCSM (without SBM) in a randomized design involving six individually fed pigs per treatment. There were no differences in FI across the treatments. Weight gain was significantly depressed with only 20% UCSM and both gain and feed/gain declined linearly with increasing proportion of UCSM. The growth studies showed that 10% was the optimum level of inclusion of UCSM in the diets. These were supported by the results of the metabolic studies.  相似文献

The pattern of chick feeding in the Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis at St Kilda, Scotland, was examined by repeated weighing of chicks throughout 14 consecutive days during the first half of the chick-rearing period in 1994. After correcting for metabolic weight losses, the sizes of positive mass increments between weighings were used to assess meal sizes and feeding frequency for each chick. Individual meals fed to chicks averaged 80.8 g (s.d. ± 21.0 g), or approximately 10% of adult mass. Each chick received 0 to 4 meals per day, with an average of 1.9 meals per chick per day, giving an average interval of around 25 h between meals delivered by each parent. The distribution of time intervals between feeds for each chick (whether single or double meals) followed a negative exponential function with a maximum value of 80 h. These results are not compatible with the idea that the purpose of large fat deposits in procellariiform chicks is to guarantee survival over long intervals between feeds. Over 14 days, the chicks' mean daily food requirements for zero-growth increased from 98 g to 160 g. This corresponded with an increase in feeding frequency but not meal size. Chicks with lower scores for body condition after feeding by both parents received more meals during the subsequent 16 h and had shorter intervals to the next feed, indicating that adults regulated feeding frequency in accordance with chick condition at the previous feed. This does not agree with the hypothesis that lipid accumulation by nestling Procellariiformes is a response to stochastic variation in food delivery associated with an absence of regulation. In view of the diversity of growth and feeding patterns present among the Procellariiformes, it is possible that lipid accumulation in this group does not have a unitary explanation.  相似文献

The eating pattern is altered by high-fat diet-induced obesity. To clarify whether this is dependent on the fatty acid profile of the diet, the authors conducted two studies on adult female Sprague-Dawley rats fed normal-fat chow or high-fat diets with varying fatty acid composition. Eating pattern and body weight were assessed in rats fed canola-based (low in saturated fatty acids) or lard-based (moderate in saturated fatty acids) diets for 7 days, and in animals fed chow or canola- or butter-based diets (rich in saturated fatty acids) for 43 days. These parameters were also determined when restricted amounts of low-fat canola- or butter-based diets were consumed for 25 days. Early exposure to canola or lard high-fat feeding or prolonged access to canola- or butter-based fat-rich diets (relative to chow feeding) did not alter the normal light-dark distribution of food and energy intake. All animals ingested most of their food during the dark phase. However, feeding the high-fat canola- and butter-based diets produced an altered eating pattern during the light phase characterized by a smaller number of meals, longer intermeal interval, and enhanced satiety ratio, and consumption of shorter-lasting meals than chow-fed animals. Relative to canola or chow feeding, butter-fed animals consumed a lower number of meals during the dark phase and had a higher eating rate in the light phase, but ate larger meals overall. Only butter feeding led to overeating and obesity. When given a restricted amount of low-fat canola- or butter-based diet at the start of the light phase, rats ate most of their food in that phase and diurnal rather than nocturnal feeding occurred with restriction. These findings underscore the role of saturated fatty acids and the resulting eating pattern alteration in the development of obesity.  相似文献

The effect of feeding frequency and voluntary sodium intake (VSI) on fluid shifts and plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) were studied at rest and after exercise in six athletic horses. The horses were fed twice a day (2TD) and six times a day (6TD) for 25 days for each protocol, according to a changeover design. VSI was measured by weighing each horse's salt block daily. Feeding 2TD or 6TD caused no major alterations in fluid shifts, but in the 2TD treatment there was a postprandial increase in plasma protein concentration and osmolality that lasted <1 h. PAC and VSI were not affected by feeding frequency. VSI ranged from 0 to 62 mg x kg body weight-1 x day-1 and caused significant alterations in PAC. At VSI <26 mg x kg body weight-1 x day-1, a diurnal rhythm for PAC was noted. Water intake, fecal concentrations of sodium and potassium, and packed cell volume during exercise were influenced by VSI. The response to exercise did not differ between treatments. In conclusion, VSI, but not feeding frequency, has significant effects on fluid and electrolyte regulation in athletic horses.  相似文献

The growth and development of black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.), larvae fed chicken manure inoculated with bacteria isolated from black soldier fly larvae and associated larval feed was evaluated. Four strains of Bacillus subtilis were evaluated. B. subtilis strains S15, S16, S19, were isolated from the gut of black soldier fly larvae. B. natto strain D1 was isolated from the diet fed to black soldier fly larvae. These bacteria were added individually into nonsterile 200 g fresh hen manure at 10(6) cfu/g and homogenized. Treated manure was then inoculated with 4-d old black soldier fly larvae. Prepupal weight ranged from 0.0606 g in the control to 0.0946 g in manure treated with the S15 strain. Larval survivorship to the prepupal stage in all treatments ranged from 98.00 ± 2.65% to 99.33 ± 1.15%. Prepupal survivorship to the pupal stage ranged from 91.92 ± 1.87% to 97.95 ± 1.03%. Adult emergence from the pupal stage did not significantly (P < 0.05) differ across treatments and ranged from 98.95 ± 1.82% to 100.00 ± 0.00%. Adult body length resulting from the larvae in each of the treatments was significantly greater than those from the control. Longevity of adults did not differ significantly between treatments. Time from hatching to the development of the first pupa did not differ significantly across treatments; however, development time from hatching to 90% reaching the prepupual stage was significantly different between treatments and ranged from 29.00 ± 1.00 d to 34.33 ± 3.51 d. Development time from hatching to 90% reaching the adult stages was significantly different between treatments. Our results demonstrate that inoculating poultry manure with bacteria from black soldier fly larvae influences the growth and development of conspecific larvae feeding on the manure.  相似文献

We examined the effects of IVM duration on rates of Korean Native Cow (KNC) first polar body extrusion, embryo development and offspring. Cumulus oocytes complexes were cultured in vitro for up to 24h. Extrusion of the first polar body was highest at 16h. At selected times during IVM, oocytes were fertilized and in vitro development was compared to blastocysts collected from superovulated KNC. After fertilization, the cleavage rate did not differ for oocytes with different durations of IVM, but the development rates of the 8-cell and blastocyst stages were significantly higher in IVM 18-h than other durations. The mean inner cell mass, trophectoderm and total cell numbers of in vivo blastocysts (40.0+/-3.8, 87.5+/-3.5 and 127.5+/-1.6, respectively) were similar to those for IVM 18-h group. When in vitro- and in vivo-derived blastocysts were transferred to Holstein heifer recipients, pregnancy and abortion rates did not differ among treatments. Mean gestation length was significantly shorter for in vivo-derived blastocysts than those derived from oocytes with 24h of IVM. Birth weight produced by the IVM 24-h group (32.0+/-2.2kg) was significantly higher than that of in vivo and IVM 18-h groups. The sex ratio of calves was similar between the in vivo and the IVM 24-h group, but all calves derived from the IVM 18-h group were males. Therefore, duration of bovine oocyte IVM played a critical role in embryo development and blastocyst cell number. In addition, it also affected birth weight and sex ratio.  相似文献

The study aimed to determine the optimum density of free‐living nematodes in feeding bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis, larvae. In the first experiment, carp stocked at 25 larvae L?1 were fed varying levels of nematodes (50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 per ml) twice a day for 21 days from the start of exogenous feeding. Final body weight was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in larvae fed 125 and 150 nematodes per ml than in those fed 50 and 75 per ml, but survival was low (61.8 and 63.6%, respectively). Survival rate was highest in larvae fed 100 nematodes ml?1 (81.3%). Carcass analysis showed that larvae fed 125 and 150 nematodes ml?1 had significantly lower body protein and higher body lipid than those fed other nematode densities. Carcass ash was similar for larvae fed 50–100 nematodes ml?1 but it decreased significantly at the higher nematode densities. Carp larvae in a subsequent experiment were given 50, 75 and 100 nematodes ml?1 per feeding. Newly hatched Artemia was the control feed. Nematode consumption and growth of the larvae were determined. Larvae were sampled at intervals of 2–4 days and the nematodes in the gut were counted and measured. At each nematode density, the number of nematodes present in the gut of the larvae increased significantly with time. At each sampling day, the number of nematodes in the gut did not differ significantly among treatments (P > 0.05) although it tended to increase with nematode density at day 2 and day 4 but decrease at day 7 onward. The carp larvae consumed significantly shorter nematodes on day 2 and day 4 than on the succeeding sampling days regardless of nematode density. However, the length of nematodes in the gut of the larvae did not differ significantly among the nematode densities. The final body weight of larvae increased with increasing nematode density. The body weight of larvae fed 100 nematodes ml?1 did not differ significantly from that of larvae given Artemia nauplii. Results show that bighead carp larvae should be fed 100 free‐living nematodes per ml at each feeding time.  相似文献

The impact of light and its role in Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), damage symptom formation, and photosynthetic capacity in 'Arapahoe' wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were examined. After 72 h under continuous dark or continuous light regimes, the number of aphids (nymphs), leaf rolling and chlorosis ratings, fresh leaf weight, and chlorophyll contents were recorded. Photosynthetic rates, chlorophyll a, kinetics and chlorophyll extractions also were determined. Aphid infestation caused significant reductions in plant height, fresh weight, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence only under continuous light. Under the 72 h continuous dark regime, aphid infestation did not cause either damage symptom formation or reduction in plant growth or metabolism (photosynthesis). Furthermore, significantly more D. noxia nymphs were produced under continuous light condition than continuous dark. Our results demonstrate that the development of D. noxia feeding damage symptoms (i.e., leaf rolling and chlorotic streaks) on susceptible wheat seedlings is a light-activated process, even though the elicitor of the plant damage symptoms is aphid feeding.  相似文献

When exposed to a human host, Anopheles gambiae started probing 4 h post-eclosion, but 95% successfully blood-fed by 16-20 h with maximal blood volumes of 5- 10 microl per female. When fed sugar, the 95% feeding was not observed until 36-40 h post-eclosion; sugar meals appeared to interfere with blood meals. Similarly in An. atroparvus, maximum volumes were 10 microl when starved but only 6 microl when fed sugar. This species did not bite before 2 d, and 95% biting was by 4 d. Given single blood meals to water-kept An. gambiae, a threshold body size for oogenesis was detected. With wing lengths below 2.8 mm, eggs never matured, but when sugar-fed, females of all sizes matured eggs including the synthesis of maternal deposits. Although sugar feeding interfered with blood feeding, more lipid was transferred to the yolk. In water-kept An. atroparvus only 5% of the females produced eggs. When sugar-fed for 4 d, all females matured eggs, so in this species sugar feeding appeared to be essential for oogenesis. An. gambiae always took multiple blood meals, tested at any time after the first ones, leading to 120 mature eggs/female. Yolk composition was 3.9 mcal protein and 3.8 mcal lipid/oocyte when kept on water, but 2.8 meal protein and 4.3 mcal lipid/oocyte with intermittent sugar meals, thus marking a surprising flexibility in synthesis of yolk protein and lipid that strongly depends on additional carbohydrates sources. Only 80% of water-fed An. atroparvus re-fed 2 d after a first blood meal with small females taking three blood meals but they still showed reduced fecundity. Only the large water-fed females matured eggs, with blood volumes higher than 9-12 microl. When fed sugar, the blood meal input was reduced, but oogenesis was possible, whereas water-fed females required three blood meals to reach the caloric level comparable to pre-feeding sugar-fed females. Water-fedAn. gambiae could survive on daily blood meals alone, but survival was further extended by intermittent sugar meals. When offered a blood donor daily, there was a behavioral difference. Females maintained alone showed a more or less regular 3 d feeding and oviposition activity, while females kept in groups fed daily followed a daily oviposition pattern, suggesting gonotrophic discordance.  相似文献

The effect of feeding pigs in a three-phase feeding (3PF) system or a daily-phase feeding (DPF) system on growth performance, body composition, and N and P excretions was studied on 8 pens of 10 pigs each. Feeds for the 3PF and DPF treatments were obtained by mixing two feeds, one with a high nutrient concentration and the other with a low nutrient concentration. The DPF pigs tended (P=0.08) to consume more feed (+3.7%) than the 3PF pigs, but only during the first feeding phase. The DPF pigs consumed 7.3% less protein (P<0.01) but a similar amount of total P. For the whole growing period, the DPF pigs tended (P=0.08) to gain more weight (+2.4%) than the 3PF pigs, mainly because of faster growth (P=0.02) during the first feeding period. At the end of the experiment, total body protein mass was similar in the two treatment groups, but the DPF pigs had 8% more body lipids (P=0.04) than the 3PF pigs. Daily multiphase feeding reduced N excretion by 12% (P<0.01) but did not significantly reduce P excretion. In addition, feed costs, nutrient intake and nutrient excretion under the two feeding strategies were simulated and compared after different approaches were used to formulate complete feeds for each phase of the 3PF system, as well as the two feeds used in the DPF program. Simulated feed intake and growth was similar to those observed in the animal experiment. In comparison with the simulated 3PF system, the feed cost for the DPF pigs was reduced by 1.0%, the simulated N and P intakes were reduced by 7.3% and 4.4%, respectively, and the expected N and P excretions were reduced by 12.6% and 6.6%, respectively. The concomitant adjustment of the dietary concentration of nutrients to match the evaluated requirements of pig populations can be an efficient approach to significantly reduce feeding costs and N and P excretions in pig production systems.  相似文献

This study was initiated to understand whether feeding behaviour and physiology may contribute to the rate of fatigued pigs at processing plants. Specifically, this study sought to determine: (1) how often pigs eat during the day, (2) the times of the day they eat and (3) a first approximation of the time from feed consumption to excretion (rate of passage) when housed in a group in conventional finishing facilities. Finally, models were constructed to try to predict the percentage of pigs with empty/diminished gastrointestinal (GI) tracts depending on the time of day of truck loading and transport durations. Pigs were randomly selected, weighed and selected for behavioural observations. From video records and live observations, the number of meals (feeding bouts) per day and the time of the day meals took place were recorded. Feed containing chromic oxide was fed to determine when a given meal was excreted. With the feeding times of day determined, models were constructed of the percentage of pigs that would have empty stomachs depending on the time of day pigs were removed from the barn and the length of transport/lairage. Finishing pigs housed in groups ate 5.6 ± 0.6 meals per day with an average feeding bout (meal) length of 11.3 ± 1.1 min. Many pigs fed ad libitum ate most of their meals during the afternoon and evening. The rate of passage of feed was 20.5 h (range = 18 to 24 h). Because fewer pigs ate in the late evening through morning, if pigs were shipped at these times they would have an increased risk of arriving at the stun at a plant with an empty GI tract. Some of the variation in rates of fatigued pigs and pork quality may be explained by times of day taken off feed and transport duration. Shipping in the afternoon or early evening may result in fewer pigs with empty/diminished GI tracts at processing which may influence the rate of fatigued pigs and pork quality.  相似文献
