  • 3.3. Exposure of intact hepatocytes to oxalate inhibited fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis from lactate, this effect was enhanced in biotin-deficient chicks. A similar effect was not observed when acetate was the substrate.
  • 4.4. Synthesis of fatty acids from lactate and acetate was stimulated by glucose, biotin deficiency increased this response. Cholesterogenesis was reduced in control but not biotin-deficient chicks.

  • 1.1. The influence of the gut microflora on lipid metabolism was investigated in germ-free (GF) and conventional (CV) laying Japanese quail.
  • 2.2. Serum and egg yolk cholesterol concentrations showed comparable values in both GF and CV environments.
  • 3.3. The fatty acid compostion of liver lipids was modified by the presence of gut microflora. Notably, in the presence of the gut microflora, proportion of oleic acid was reduced and conversely, stearic and linoleic acids were enhanced.
  • 4.4. In egg yolk lipids, the proportion of myristoleic and palmitoleic acids was significantly lowered and that of stearic acid was significantly enhanced by the presence of the gut microflora, though the difference was very small.
  • 5.5. It was suggested that oleic acid could be easily either hydrogenated to stearic acid or desaturated to linoleic acid by the action of the gut microflora in Japanese quail.

  • 1.1. Crossbred Yorkshire (Yorkshire × Landrace) pigs were fed butter oil, cream, low erucic acid rapeseed oil, sunflower oil and partially hydrogenated sunflower oil in amounts representing 30% of energy for periods of up to 13 weeks.
  • 2.2. After 13 wk of feeding serum total cholesterol levels of pigs fed milk fat were significantly higher than of pigs fed vegetable oils.

  • 1.1. The dietary and inter-organ cholesterol transport in the hemolymph of the bivalve mollusc Diplodon delodontus, was studied. Plasma and hemocytes were obtained after feeding labeled cholesterol to animals or injecting it into the posterior adductor muscle.
  • 2.2. In both cases, cholesterol was incorporated either into plasma or hematic cells.
  • 3.3. Two plasmatic fractions differing in their hydrated densities were recognized as cholesterol carriers and were isolated. They have characteristics of high density (HDL) and very high density (VHDL) lipoproteins, respectively.
  • 4.4. The major lipids in the different classes of lipoproteins were free sterols in HDL and phospholipids in VHDL.
  • 5.5. Neither low nor very low density lipoprotein transporting cholesterol was detected.

  • 1.1. The distribution of ceramide aminoethylphosphonate (CAEP) in microsomal membranes obtained from different tissues of the bivalve mollusc Diplodon delodontus was determined.
  • 2.2. The concentration of CAEP reached from 9 to 19% of the total microsomal polar lipids, depending on the kind of tissue.
  • 3.3. Palmitic acid was the main fatty acid in the ceramide moiety, followed by stearic and eicosamonoenoic acids.
  • 4.4. Artificial membranes were prepared with microsomal phospholipids or phospholipids plus sterols, with and without the addition of CAEP.
  • 5.5. It was shown that the phosphonate confers minor mobility to the membranes. This effect is more effective when the membrane contains the natural sterols and the phospholipids are unsaturated.

  • 1.1. Chemical feeding stimulants for an herbivorous fish, Tilapia zillii have been determined by fractionation and bioassay of substances derived from a model food plant.
  • 2.2. Stimulation was produced by amino acids; glutamic acid, aspartic acid, serine, lysine and alanine produced the bulk of stimulatory activity.
  • 3.3. These amino acids are among the most abundant in the test plant, and are markedly different from the amino acids found to stimulate feeding in carnivorous fish.
  • 4.4. On the basis of these results, a chemically-mediated mechanism of feeding niche separation is postulated.

  • 1.1. An artificial diet, consisting of a dry aggregate of 59 chemical substances, was used to assess the requirements of the sea slater Ligia pallasii for vitamins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, cholesterol and minerals.
  • 2.2. Good growth and survival of L. pallasii was obtained on the diet, comparable to that on seaweeds and to that shown by a field population.
  • 3.3. No dietary requirements for vitamins, fatty acids or cholesterol were shown for periods of 40 weeks or more for L. pallasii.
  • 4.4. Carbohydrates were shown to be required by L. pallasii in its diet, in the order: starch, lactose > maltose, glucose > sucrose, cellulose.
  • 5.5. Dietary requirements for minerals were, in order: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus > copper, nickel, zinc > iron, manganese, sulphur > iodine, silicon.
  • 6.6. The results are discussed in relation to the role of gut bacteria in supplying required nutrients to their isopod hosts and the enhancement of this process through coprophagic behaviour.

  • 1.1. Cholesterol metabolism has been characterized in three species of New World primates, the cotton-top tamarin, the saddle-back tamarin, and the squirrel monkey.
  • 2.2. When fed a diet containing cholesterol, the three species exhibited differing responses of plasma cholesterol levels.
  • 3.3. Dietary cholesterol absorption was determined and plasma cholesterol die-away kinetics were analyzed in terms of a two-pool model.
  • 4.4. The results of the analyses of cholesterol turnover are consistent with the observed species-specific differences in plasma cholesterol values and cholesterol absorption.
  • 5.5. Cholesterol metabolism differs between the two tamarin species, as well as between the tamarins and the squirrel monkey.
  • 6.6. Implications of species-specific differences between tamarin species are discussed in terms of the use of tamarin species as animal models for comparative studies of cholesterol metabolism and the etiology of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

  • 1.1. The composition of bile pigments in the blood and bile of 39 species were studied.
  • 2.2. Conjugated bilirubin (trace to 4.62 mg/100 ml) was detected in the serum of most fish, while biliverdin (trace to 2.0 mg/100ml) was detected only in Anguilla Japonica, Thalassoma lunare and Clinocottus analis.
  • 3.3. Analysis showed tht there are two types of bile pigments excretion pattern in these fishes. The first pattern excretes bilirubin (most conjugate) predominantly, the other excretes mostly biliverdin with some bilirubin. However, during starvation, the excretion of conjugate bilirubin gradually shifted to unconjugated biliverdin. The rate of shifting varies with species.
  • 4.4. Introduction of bilirubin into Anguilla japonica produced an initial excretion of mono-conjugates, followed by di-conjugates. Introduction of biliverdin caused an increased in the excretion of unconjugated biliverdin, but no significant increase of bilirubin in the bile was detected.
  • 5.5. A binary excretion pathway of bile pigments in fish is proposed. The evolutionary characteristics of heme catabolism in terrestrial animals with respect to this pathway is discussed.

  • 1.1. Two columnar cacti in the Sonoran Desert, agria and organpipe, contain medium chain (C8−C12) fatty acids.
  • 2.2. Necrotic tissues of these cacti serve as feeding and breeding substrates for Drosophila mojavensis but not D. nigrospiracula.
  • 3.3. Results show that capric and lauric acids are the predominant fatty acids of both cacti.
  • 4.4. Fatty acid chain length exhibits a differential effect on larval viability with caprylic acid (Q) having the greatest and myristic acid (C14) having the least effect.
  • 5.5. Drosophila mojavensis is more tolerant of free fatty acids than D. nigrospiracula, and this partly explains the ability of D. mojavensis to utilize agria and organpipe cacti.

  • 2.2. The mucus glycoprotein peptidyl-tRNA fraction was found to contain covalently bound palmitic acid in its complexes.
  • 3.3. RNase digestion of the mucus glycoprotein peptidyl-tRNA released [3H]palmitic acid labeled peptides which, on SDS-polyacrylamide gel, separated into a multitude of bands ranging in size from 2000 to 60,000 Da.
  • 4.4. The analyses of low molecular weight peptides revealed that palmitic acid was present in methionine-labeled peptides containing 30–43 amino acids and those of 18–25 amino acids or larger devoid of methionine, but was not identified in methionine-labeled peptides containing 10–15 amino acids.
  • 5.5. The results indicate that the N-terminal fatty acylation of mucus glycoprotein nascent peptides is a cotranslational process which is occuring in an immediate vicinity of the signal peptide fragment.
