Computer programs were developed to hasten the summarization of behavioral data. Behavioral data may be collected by hand (pencil, paper and watch), strip-chart mechanical event recorder, electronic event recorder or by a computer. These behavioral data, in raw form, enter (electronically or manually) a microcomputer (IBM-PC, 128K) or mainframe computer. The microcomputer version summarizes the number of occurrences (frequency), duration and sequence of each behavior. As a microcomputer memory is limited, a program to summarize larger data sets containing more behavior patterns was developed on our mainframe computer (CDC Cyber 730/760). This sequential analysis program can accumulate up to 10 behavioral sequences (9 orders of transition) of up to 50 behaviors in a data set containing up to 10 000 elements. The computer-summary of each treatment may be combined to determine if treatment differences exist. An example data set is provided.  相似文献

An approach for performing multiple alignments of large numbers of amino acid or nucleotide sequences is described. The method is based on first deriving a phylogenetic tree from a matrix of all pairwise sequence similarity scores, obtained using a fast pairwise alignment algorithm. Then the multiple alignment is achieved from a series of pairwise alignments of clusters of sequences, following the order of branching in the tree. The method is sufficiently fast and economical with memory to be easily implemented on a microcomputer, and yet the results obtained are comparable to those from packages requiring mainframe computer facilities.  相似文献

We have developed a method for automated data collection from anchorage-independent growth assays by direct interfacing of an Omnicon image analysis system with a VAX mainframe computer network. By use of this interface, data generated with the Omnicon can be acquired and manipulated by the VAX, providing several advantages including high throughput, elimination of operator error, flexibility and speed, and capacity of mainframe data processing. We have applied these techniques to aid in the purification of a novel growth factor for human epithelial cells. Both column elution profiles and dose-response data were processed to graphic formats, and ED50 values for the individual purification steps were obtained by Hill transformation of the dose-response curves. The assay for anchorage-independent growth is widely used for purification of growth factors and testing of chemotherapeutic agents against human tumor cells. The present technique should be useful in facilitating these labor-intensive studies.  相似文献

Agricultural lignocellulosic fiber (rice straw)-waste tire particle composite boards were manufactured for use as insulation boards in construction, using the same method as that used in the wood-based panel industry. The manufacturing parameters were: a specific gravity of 0.8 and a rice straw content (10/90, 20/80 and 30/70 by wt.% of rice straw/waste tire particle). A commercial polyurethane adhesive for rubber was used as the composite binder. The water proof, water absorption and thickness swelling properties of the composite boards were better than those of wood particleboard. Furthermore, the flexibility and flexural properties of the composite boards were superior to those of other wood-based panel products. The composite boards also demonstrated good acoustical insulation, electrical insulation, anti-caustic and anti-rot properties. These boards can be used to prevent impact damage, are easily modifiable and are inexpensive. They are able to be used as a substitute for insulation boards and other flexural materials in construction.  相似文献

A method has been developed to link the display ability of ahigh-resolution graphics workstation with the computationalpower of a local mainframe or a remote supercomputer via anelectronic data network. The method allows this link to be establishedin a manner largely transparent to the user. The applicationof the method is illustrated by our successful distributionof the computationally intensive portions of an imaging program(MDPP) from a small VAX workstation to a VAX mainframe and CrayY-MP8/832 using a simple message-passing technique. A BASIC computer program has been developed which has been used to show that bovine lens aldose reductase with NADPH as substrate follows a 1:1 function, while rabbit lens hexokinase has a rate equation of minimum degree 2:2, and bovine lens polyol dehydrogenase has a rate equation of minimum degree 1:2 with xylitol as substrate. The parameter estimates obtained are very close to those from the BMDP3R curvefitting program on an ICL 2980 mainframe computer, with identical conclusions as to the minimum degree of the rate equation. The computer program can be run on any microcomputer with high resolution graphics in less than 48 K of random access memory.  相似文献

AN EMPIRICAL COMPARISON OF MICROCOMPUTER PARSIMONY PROGRAMS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract— The effectiveness and efficiency of two microcomputer parsimony programs (Felsenstein's PHYLIP and Swofford's PAUP), and a prototype version of a third (SHEN, to be incorporated in Farris' HENNIG-86), are evaluated with reference to 35 data sets, including those previously used by Luckow and Pimentel (1985) to benchmark mainframe programs. Both PHYLIP and PAUP can be used effectively; with careful selection of options, their accuracy can equal or surpass that of older mainframe programs. PHYLIP is relatively inefficient (in use of computer time); its usefulness is also limited by the inability of its heuristic algorithms to detect multiple equally parsimonious solutions in a single run. PHYLIP's exact algorithm (branch-and-bound) and PAUP's heuristic and exact algorithms do not share the latter drawback but require users to spend unreasonable amounts of time coping with redundant output. The remarkable effectiveness of these programs offers hope that (particularly with the advent of multitasking microcomputers) exact and cost-effective solutions will be obtainable in many, if not all, cladistic analyses.  相似文献

It is clear that a computer-aided data control system is required for even small laboratories generating nucleic acid data. While the molecular biologist at many universities and large research institutions has access to mainframe computers and nucleic acid sequence analysis software, many find it more convenient to perform sequence analysis on microcomputers that are typically located within the investigator's laboratory and totally dedicated to sequence storage and analysis, in essence giving the investigator more personal control of analysis activities than is sometimes possible with shared mini- or mainframe computers. New programs are being written and released at an increasing rate to perform increasingly more complex and specialized analyses using small computer-based systems. This trend will undoubtedly continue, fueled by the need to manage the ever increasing quantity of sequence data.  相似文献

In this study, rice straw-wood particle composite boards were manufactured as insulation boards using the method used in the wood-based panel industry. The raw material, rice straw, was chosen because of its availability. The manufacturing parameters were: a specific gravity of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8, and a rice straw content (10/90, 20/80, and 30/70 weight of rice straw/wood particle) of 10, 20, and 30 wt.%. A commercial urea-formaldehyde adhesive was used as the composite binder, to achieve 140-290 psi of bending modulus of rupture (MOR) with 0.4 specific gravity, 700-900 psi of bending MOR with 0.6 specific gravity, and 1400-2900 psi of bending MOR with a 0.8 specific gravity. All of the composite boards were superior to insulation board in strength. Width and length of the rice straw particle did not affect the bending MOR. The composite boards made from a random cutting of rice straw and wood particles were the best and recommended for manufacturing processes. Sound absorption coefficients of the 0.4 and 0.6 specific gravity boards were higher than the other wood-based materials. The recommended properties of the rice straw-wood particle composite boards are described, to absorb noises, preserve the temperature of indoor living spaces, and to be able to partially or completely substitute for wood particleboard and insulation board in wooden constructions.  相似文献

昆虫与植物之间色彩通讯是彼此信息交流的渠道之一,基于害虫趋色性研发的诱虫板作为一种绿色防控手段,已广泛用于农林害虫的虫情监测、预测预报、大量诱杀以及天敌诱集和指引,效果良好.本文概述了昆虫趋光趋色机理、诱虫板诱杀害虫机制和诱虫板色彩、形状、大小、高度、密度、方向、诱虫时长、植株形态和害虫生理状态等对于诱捕效果的影响,总结了诱虫板在茶园、菜地和大棚等作物环境中的多种实用技术,解析了诱虫板与昆虫性诱剂、植物源引诱剂等配合使用方法及其功效,评价了诱虫板治虫的优缺点并提出改进措施,讨论了诱虫板诱效的评价方法和成本核算.展望了新一代诱虫板研发方向、诱虫板与信息素等产品在有害生物综合治理(IPM)中的集成应用和诱虫板产业前景.  相似文献

Lignin obtained from eucalyptus wood by acetic acid pulping was methylolated or phenolated and used to prepare lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resins. The amount of formaldehyde consumed in the methylolation reaction, and supporting comparison of pre- and post-methylolation 1H and 13C NMR spectra, showed the reactivity of the crude acetosolv lignin with formaldehyde to be relatively high. Pine and eucalyptus plywood boards manufactured using the resins prepared with the modified lignins complied with European Standard EN 314-1:1993 for WBP quality boards and gave knife test results similar to those of boards manufactured with a commercial phenol-formaldehyde resin.  相似文献

A prototype instrument is described that permits efficient administration of test compounds to laboratory animals by intubation. The system integrates a balance, a computer and a volumetric dispenser. Complete animal identification, weight and dose records are kept and may be interfaced with mainframe computers. A range of doses may be delivered from a single stock solution. No carryover is evident between doses. The system is accurate, precise and rugged. The system is cost effective relative to current manual gavage techniques and offers added safety for investigators handling toxic materials.  相似文献

The computer program HYLAS generates from a standard DNA lettersequence a three-dimensional space curve (H curve) which embodiesthe entire information content of the original nucleotide sequence.The program can display H curves either as two-dimensional (frontand side view) projections or as stereo-pair images. The curvescan be marked at specific nucleotide locations, annotated, rotatedfor observation from any viewing angle, and manipulated forconvenient side-by-side comparisons. Unlike the cumbersome lettersequences, H curves can be drastically condensed in size withoutlosing their ability to reflect the global nucleotide-distributionpattern of the entire DNA sequence. Often, biologically importantloci can be visually identified on the H curves. HYLAS is writtenin FORTRAN with separate mainframe (IBM- VM/CMS) and microcomputer(MS-DOS) versions. Five farm residues were used for the manufacture of low-density particle boards in a hot platter press using urea formaldehyde as the binding material. Mechanical and thermal properties of the boards were evaluated. The maize-cob board was superior to other boards in mechanical and screw/nail holding strength, suggesting its use for interior applications, while paddy-straw board and coconut-pith board were found to be suitable for insulation purposes.  相似文献

A comprehensive package of software has been developed to access nucleic acid and protein sequence databases on stand-alone IBM personal computers. The software combines keyword search on the annotation fields of the data with pattern matching algorithms on the biological sequences. Sequences containing complex sites like promoters or kink sites can be identified as well as sequences that are similar to a query sequence. Protein sequences with particular patterns of amino acids such as hydrophobic regions can be identified as well. Considering the relatively inexpensive hard disks now available, personal computers have become a cost-effective alternative to mainframe processing for sequence databases.  相似文献

The alfalfa leafcutting bee, Megachile rotundata (F.), is a solitary, cavity-nesting bee that has been managed in large numbers to pollinate alfalfa, Medicago spp., seed crops since the 1960s. Propagation of these bees from 1 yr to the next has been seriously hampered by chalkbrood, a larval disease caused by the fungus Ascosphaera aggregata Skou. In the United States, attempts to control the disease have been fairly unsuccessful, but include removing nests from the nesting boards and then disinfecting the boards with heat treatments or a fumigant. The problem is that many boards are made of polystyrene (so heat cannot be used), and very few fumigants are registered for this use. In this study, ozone was tested as a fumigant and compared with heat treatments and methyl bromide fumigation. Ozone was found to be inadequate for killing A. aggregata spores and for reducing chalkbrood levels in the field. Methyl bromide and heat treatments did greatly reduce spore viability in the boards, but did not reduce chalkbrood levels in the field. Surprisingly, larvae in new nesting boards (boards free of contamination) and chalkbrood infection levels were similar to those from nests in contaminated, used boards. Disinfecting nesting boards may be necessary for controlling chalkbrood, but the results reported here indicate that it is not sufficient in and of itself. Some other source of spores was present in the field that was greater than the effect of contamination from the boards, but the source still needs to be determined.  相似文献

Working memory refers to the temporary retention of information that was just experienced or just retrieved from long-term memory but no longer exists in the external environment. These internal representations are short-lived, but can be stored for longer periods of time through active maintenance or rehearsal strategies, and can be subjected to various operations that manipulate the information in such a way that makes it useful for goal-directed behaviour. Empirical studies of working memory using neuroscientific techniques, such as neuronal recordings in monkeys or functional neuroimaging in humans, have advanced our knowledge of the underlying neural mechanisms of working memory. This rich dataset can be reconciled with behavioural findings derived from investigating the cognitive mechanisms underlying working memory. In this paper, I review the progress that has been made towards this effort by illustrating how investigations of the neural mechanisms underlying working memory can be influenced by cognitive models and, in turn, how cognitive models can be shaped and modified by neuroscientific data. One conclusion that arises from this research is that working memory can be viewed as neither a unitary nor a dedicated system. A network of brain regions, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC), is critical for the active maintenance of internal representations that are necessary for goal-directed behaviour. Thus, working memory is not localized to a single brain region but probably is an emergent property of the functional interactions between the PFC and the rest of the brain.  相似文献

The magnitude of a virus-specific memory CTL population can dramatically influence the outcome of secondary infections, yet little is known about the determinants of memory size. We investigated the impact of epitope levels on CTL memory generation by using a recombinant vaccinia virus system that allows for a broad range of epitope expression with the same infectious dose of virus. The size of the memory pool was examined using MHC class I/peptide tetramer staining and IFN-gamma ELISPOT analysis following priming with viruses expressing low, high, or excessive epitope levels. The size of the epitope-specific CD8(+) T cell memory population correlates with Ag dose at the low and high levels of epitope expression. However, at excessive epitope levels, the number of functional, IFN-gamma-producing, epitope-specific memory cells is significantly reduced compared with the number of tetramer(+) cells. These results demonstrate that the level of epitope expressed during an acute viral infection in vivo can dramatically influence CTL memory size. Furthermore, when epitope is overexpressed, the quality of the response can be adversely affected. Therefore, epitope expression level is an important consideration when developing approaches to optimize CTL memory induction.  相似文献

Explicit (often verbal) reports are typically used to investigate memory (e.g. "Tell me what you remember about the person you saw at the bank yesterday."), however such reports can often be unreliable or sensitive to response bias 1, and may be unobtainable in some participant populations. Furthermore, explicit reports only reveal when information has reached consciousness and cannot comment on when memories were accessed during processing, regardless of whether the information is subsequently accessed in a conscious manner. Eye movement monitoring (eye tracking) provides a tool by which memory can be probed without asking participants to comment on the contents of their memories, and access of such memories can be revealed on-line 2,3. Video-based eye trackers (either head-mounted or remote) use a system of cameras and infrared markers to examine the pupil and corneal reflection in each eye as the participant views a display monitor. For head-mounted eye trackers, infrared markers are also used to determine head position to allow for head movement and more precise localization of eye position. Here, we demonstrate the use of a head-mounted eye tracking system to investigate memory performance in neurologically-intact and neurologically-impaired adults. Eye movement monitoring procedures begin with the placement of the eye tracker on the participant, and setup of the head and eye cameras. Calibration and validation procedures are conducted to ensure accuracy of eye position recording. Real-time recordings of X,Y-coordinate positions on the display monitor are then converted and used to describe periods of time in which the eye is static (i.e. fixations) versus in motion (i.e., saccades). Fixations and saccades are time-locked with respect to the onset/offset of a visual display or another external event (e.g. button press). Experimental manipulations are constructed to examine how and when patterns of fixations and saccades are altered through different types of prior experience. The influence of memory is revealed in the extent to which scanning patterns to new images differ from scanning patterns to images that have been previously studied 2, 4-5. Memory can also be interrogated for its specificity; for instance, eye movement patterns that differ between an identical and an altered version of a previously studied image reveal the storage of the altered detail in memory 2-3, 6-8. These indices of memory can be compared across participant populations, thereby providing a powerful tool by which to examine the organization of memory in healthy individuals, and the specific changes that occur to memory with neurological insult or decline 2-3, 8-10.Download video file.(87M, mp4)  相似文献
