  • 1.The levels of water, Na, K, Ca and Mg in blood serum, brain and kidney and aldosterone level in blood of Naja haje haje were studied during the different phases of the annual cycle.
  • 2.The water content in the tissues studied displayed only minor changes as the animals passed from one phase to the other.
  • 3.A significant increase in Na was recorded in the brain during the different phases indicating a depressed sodium pump, whereas the blood Na level showed a significant decrease during hibernation.
  • 4.K increased in blood serum, brain and kidney during hibernation, while a nonsignificant decrease was found in blood serum during arousal. The brain may act as a potassium reservoir.
  • 5.An increase in Ca and Mg concentration was recorded in blood serum, brain and kidney during prehibernation and hibernation. The data suggested a homeostatic function in the transport and metabolism of these cations.
  • 6.Aldosterone exhibited a highly significant decrease especially during hibernation. The aldosterone regulation of ionic composition is discussed.
  • 7.Na/K and Ca/Mg ratios in the brain may explain the decreased excitability during winter torpor.

  • 1.Total lipids, free fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids and total cholesterol in blood serum, liver, brain, cardiac and skeletal muscles of Naja haje haje were determined during the different phases of the hibernation cycle.
  • 2.A sharp decrease in the level of total lipids of blood serum and all tissues occurred during hibernation. Upon arousal, lipogenesis is commonly restored.
  • 3.Elevated concentrations of serum free fatty acids predominated in pre-hibernation and hibernation periods, while the tissues recorded highly significant declines during hibernation.
  • 4.Occurrence of marked decreases in triglycerides contents of serum and tissues except the cardiac muscles in the hibernation and arousal phases.
  • 5.Sharp increases in the phospholipid contents of blood and the selected tissues were recorded during hibernation. The level declined in both liver and cardiac muscles in arousing animals.
  • 6.Total cholesterol level was lowered in blood during hibernation. The cardiac muscles showed a highly significant decrease while liver, brain and skeletal muscles showed elevations in the same phase.

  • 1.1. Thirty-one male golden-mantled ground squirrels were divided into four physiological groups: low wt summer, medium wt summer, high wt summer and hibernation period. A second group of 10 females was divided into two groups: hibernation period at low Tb and hibernation period during a periodic arousal.
  • 2.2. Blood serum, pancreas and antral stomach region were collected from each animal.
  • 3.3. The serum was analysed by radioimmunoassay for pancreatic polypeptide immunoreactivity, the pancreas for pancreatic polypeptide and somatostatin immunoreactivity and the antral region of the stomach for gastrin immunoreactivity.
  • 4.4. Significant between-stage differences (P < 0.05) were found in serum pancreatic polypeptide concentration and in pancreatic somatostatin content.

  • 1.1. Several pathways of carbohydrate metabolism were evaluated in three different tissues—liver, gonad and kidney—of a hatchery-reared population of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which characterised two different stages of their gonadal maturation, i.e. previtellogenesis and established exogenous vitellogenesis.
  • 2.2. A fall in liver glycogen levels was observed during exogenous vitellogenesis. A decrease in activity of the enzymes involved in glycolysis and in the pentose phosphate shunt was also observed, suggesting that at the end of exogenous vitellogenesis the necessity of energy and reducing power has decreased compared to the situation at the onset of this period.
  • 3.3. The main changes observed in gonad during vitellogenesis were the decreased activity of glycolysis and the pentose phosphate shunt as well as increased glycogen levels. The stored glycogen should be used later in association with the embryo development.
  • 4.4. No major changes were observed in kidney metabolism throughout the vitellogenic process.
  • 5.5. Exogenous vitellogenesis in rainbow trout is mainly associated with increased glycogen levels in the gonad and decreased metabolic activity in the liver.

  • 1.1. It is shown that Ca2+-dependent activation of respiration of liver mitochondria from hibernating ground squirrels is accompanied by mitochondrial swelling.
  • 2.2. The swelling of mitochondria from hibernating ground squirrels, as well as the activation of mitochondrial respiration, is precluded by cyclosporin A, p-bromphenacylbromide and oligomycin. Carboxyatractiloside, on the contrary, under these conditions favors the swelling and the acceleration of respiration.
  • 3.3. It was concluded that Ca2+-dependent activation of hibernating ground squirrel liver mitochondrial respiration resulted from the appearance of a non-specific permeability pathway and from swelling of mitochondria.

  • 1.1. Growing male kittens were fed an 18% casein diet supplemented with 2, 3, or 4% l-methionine (MET) for 6 weeks.
  • 2.2. Free MET concentration in liver increased 30-fold and cystathionine two- to three-fold; the activity of adenosyl-MET transferase and cystathionase also increased but remained lower than previously found in rats.
  • 3.3. Taurine concentration in liver decreased in cats fed excess MET and appeared to depend on taurine intake.
  • 4.4. Alanine aminotransferase activity was high in all groups while serine dehydratase activity was very low.
  • 5.5. Pyruvate kinase and malic enzyme activities which are normally low in cat liver increased after excess MET. Also, glucose 6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases increased.

  • 1.1. The activities of β-glucuronidase and cathepsin D and the protein concentration were assayed from brain, kidney, liver, cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle (m. rectus femoris) samples from mice (Mus musculus) 1, 3, and 6 days after intermittent exhaustive (duration 100–145min) and submaximal prolonged (duration 9 hr) running on treadmill.
  • 2.2. The activity of β-glucuronidase in skeletal muscle strongly increased being the highest 3 days after both exertions. Cathepsin D activity also slightly increased. In cardiac muscle β-glucuronidase activity was unaffected. Cathepsin D activity slightly increased 3 days after intermittent exhaustive exercise.
  • 3.3. The specific activities of β-glucuronidase and cathepsin D in the liver increased 1 day after the both exertions. Simultaneously the protein concentration decreased. In the kidney β-glucuronidase activity and protein concentration were unaffected but cathepsin D activity decreased 1 day after intermittent exhaustive exercise.
  • 4.4. In the brain protein concentration transiently decreased 3 days after the exertions. β-Glucuronidase activity transiently decreased 1 day after intermittent exercise thereafter increasing 6 days afterwards above the control level. Cathepsin D activity decreased 1 day after intermittent exercise but was unaffected after prolonged submaximal exercise.
  • 5.5. Physical stress affected to varying extent the acid hydrolase activities in all organs studied.

  • 1.1. The ontogeny of type I and type III deiodinase activities was studied in embryonic and posthatch chicks.

  • 5.5. Relative gene diversities within and between populations are 84% and 16% respectively.

  • 1.1. To characterize an enzyme which metabolizes retinal in liver microsomes, several properties of the enzymatic reaction from retinal to retinoic acid were investigated using rabbit liver microsomes.
  • 2.2. The maximum pH of the reaction in the liver microsomes was 7.6.
  • 3.3. The Km and Vmax values for all-trans, 9-cis and 13-cis-retinals were determined.
  • 4.4. The reaction proceeded in the presence of NADPH and molecular oxygen.
  • 5.5. The incorporation of one atom of molecular oxygen into retinal was confirmed by using oxygen-18, showing that the reaction comprised monooxygenation, not dehydrogenation.
  • 6.6. The monooxygenase activity was inhibited by carbon monoxide, phenylisocyanide and antiNADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase IgG, but not by anti-cytochrome b5 IgG.
  • 7.7. The enzymatic activity inhibited by carbon monoxide was photoreversibly restored by light of a wavelength of around 450 nm.
  • 8.8. The retinal-induced spectra of liver microsomes with three isomeric retinals were type I spectra.
  • 9.9. The microsomal monooxygenase activity induced by phenobarbital or ethanol were more effective than that by 3-methylcholanthrene, clotrimazole or β-naphthoflavone.
  • 10.10. These results showed that the monooxygenase reaction from retinal to retinoic acid in liver microsomes is catalyzed by a cytochrome P-450-linked monooxygenase system.

  • 1.1. The types of haemocytes during larval development were studied.
  • 2.2. The developmental profile of leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase was studied. The maximum LAP activity was found to be in early larval development, while the maximum alkaline phosphatase during the white pupal stage.
  • 3.3. These activities were compared with those determined in cell-free haemolymph.
  • 4.4. Both hydrolytic enzymes have been found histochemically in the prohaemocytes and in the plasmatocytes.
  • 5.5. In cultured haemocytes experiments it was found that 64% of the total LAP activity was secreted into the incubation medium, while electrophoretic analysis of released LAP activity demonstrated that only LAP A isozyme was secreted.
  • 6.6. Based on the above results we suggest that both hydrolytic enzymes are functionally important throughout larval development.

  • 1.1. The effects of niacin deficiency on the relative turnover rates of proteins in various tissues of Japanese quail were investigated.
  • 2.2. The level of liver NAD was not affected by niacin deficiency whereas the level of pectoral muscle NAD was markedly reduced.
  • 3.3. In all dietary treatments the liver had the highest turnover rates of proteins, heart and brain had intermediate rates, and pectoral muscle had the lowest rates.
  • 4.4. Relative turnover rates of proteins in all tissues (particularly pectoral muscle) of the niacin deficient group were significantly higher than those of pair-fed control group, although there were no significant differences in turnover rate between pair-fed control and control groups.
  • 5.5. The high turnover rate of proteins in niacin deficiency was primarily attributed to enhanced degradation rate of proteins rather than enhanced synthesis rate of proteins.
  • 6.6. Optical density scanning (or densitometric) of water-soluble pectoral muscle proteins separated by isoelectric focusing revealed several additional minor protein bands between major protein bands in the niacin deficient group which were more pronounced in the acidic region of the gel.
  • 7.7. These results suggest that proteins with a low pI value in pectoral muscle of the niacin deficient animal are highly sensitive to protein degradation.

  • 1.1. Brain trehalase specific activity and trehalosemia were measured during the end of the developmental life cycle in non-diapausing and diapausing insects.
  • 2.2. During non-diapausing development, trehalosemia reached maximum values at the beginning of pupal life. Then a constant decrease was observed up to the end of adult life.
  • 3.3. The specific activity of brain trehalase was maximum when the insects were in active feeding periods, minimum activity appearing during moulting phases.
  • 4.4. During diapausing development, trehalosemia was very high at the beginning of pupal life, particularly when insects were exposed to wintering conditions.
  • 5.5. When diapause was broken, trehalosemia fell, announcing adult emergence.
  • 6.6. Brain trehalase activity showed the same qualitative variations as in non-diapausing larvae, but with rather lower values.
  • 7.7. During pupal life, brain trehalase activity decreased markedly during the long period necessary to obtain diapause breakdown.
  • 8.8. Wintering conditions allow a progressive increase of brain trehalase activity, which preceded the fall of trehalosemia.
