  • 1.1. Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) effects of diet were investigated in the supralittoral isopod, Ligia pallasii, using defined chemical diets.
  • 2.2. “Apparent SDA”, or the total rise in metabolic rate following a meal, was resolved in animals eating a nutritionally complete chemical diet into three components: 8% mechanical costs of moving food through the gut, 40% “excitement costs” due to investigator disturbance and presence of food, and 52% SDA.
  • 3.3. Excitement costs in animals exposed to food but which chose not to eat showed non-significant variation between diets containing different levels of chemical nutrients, but were significantly less on a diet containing only cellulose and agar.
  • 4.4. SDA increased with increasing concentration of amino acids in the diet.
  • 5.5. Substitution of whole-protein casein for free amino acids in the diet had no significant SDA effect, while substitution of free amino acids in the ratio found in casein more than doubled the SDA effect.
  • 6.6. Deletion of alanine from the diet caused no significant effect on SDA, while deletion of phenylalanine caused a highly significant elevation in SDA.

  • 1.1. The relationship of Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) to growth was examined in the supralittoral isopod Ligia pallasii using a seaweed diet fed at different rations.
  • 2.2. Animals increased in live weight by 33% on an ad libitum or 100% diet and by 2% on a 20% ration over a 10-week period.
  • 3.3. Weight-specific VO2 was significantly higher in animals eating the 100% diet than in ones eating the 20% diet. Decline in VO2 with time in animals on the 20% diet was probably due to poor health associated with a maintenance ration.
  • 4.4. SDA per unit weight of food eaten was 18% higher in the 20% diet group than in the 100% one, and values remained constant over time in both groups.
  • 5.5. k1 growth efficiencies (production/consumption) were higher in animals on 100% ration than in ones on 20% ration. Efficiencies declined with time in both diet-groups and fell below zero in the 20% ration-group, coincidental with weight-loss in some of the animals.
  • 6.6. Overall SDAs for the 10-week period were positively correlated with growth (r2 = 0.77), but there was no way to separate this from amounts eaten as an effect on SDA.

Growth, survival, ammonia excretion and Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) were assessed in the supralittoral isopod Ligia pallasii eating chemical diets with differing proportions of d- and l-amino acids. Growth and survival decreased in direct proportion to increasing dietary intake of d-amino acids.
  • 2.2. Survival on diets with greater than 50% content of d-amino acids (based on total amino acids in diet) was lower than that expected based on previous work, suggesting a deleterious effect of the d-isomers.
  • 3.3. Ammonia excretion and SDA correlated negatively with increasing dietary content of d-amino acids.
  • 4.4. The general conclusion is that d-amino acids play no role in anabolic or energy metabolism in Ligia, and that poor performance at higher dietary levels of d-amino acids may relate to their interference with transport pathways for the normal l-forms.

  • 1.1. Development times, fertilities and weights of symbiotic and aposymbiotic strains of the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae in response to single omissions of seven vitamins and choline were studied.
  • 2.2. No strict requirement for choline could be demonstrated: development times and weights were comparable to diets with or without choline, but the presence of choline increased fertility of the symbiotic strain on vitamin-deficient diets.
  • 3.3. The 0.02% concentration used in these experiments may be too high since it resulted in a lower fertility of the aposymbiotic strain.
  • 4.4. The results indicated that niacin could be synthesized by the weevils.
  • 5.5. Thiamine, folic acid and pyridoxine were found to be required in the diet of both strains but the latter two may be supplied in part by symbiotes since a first symbiotic generation was obtained.
  • 6.6. Pantothenic acid, biotin and riboflavin were only required by aposymbiotic weevils: their omission from the diet did not modify the development of symbiotic insects.
  • 7.7. It is therefore suggested that these three vitamins are supplied by symbiotes.

  • 1.1. Crossbred Yorkshire (Yorkshire × Landrace) pigs were fed butter oil, cream, low erucic acid rapeseed oil, sunflower oil and partially hydrogenated sunflower oil in amounts representing 30% of energy for periods of up to 13 weeks.
  • 2.2. After 13 wk of feeding serum total cholesterol levels of pigs fed milk fat were significantly higher than of pigs fed vegetable oils.
  • 3.3. The difference in cholesterol was mainly due to an increase in the density range of 1.063–1.125 g/ml containing pig LDL2 and some HDL.
  • 4.4. A shift towards smaller LDL particle size was apparent in pigs fed milk fat.
  • 5.5. The effects of dietary trans fatty acids did not differ from cis polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fatty acids.

  • 1.1. The sterol composition of the digestive gland and the gonad of Sepia officinalis L. was investigated by GC and GC-MS.
  • 2.2. The same sterols were recognized in both organs, cholesterol being the major component of the sterol mixtures. However, quantitative differences appeared between the sterol composition of the digestive gland and the gonad.
  • 3.3. The sterol mixtures of the digestive gland and the gonad of immature and mature females and males of various origins were compared. Quantitative changes in the sterol composition of the gonad were related to sexual maturity whereas the sterol composition of the digestive gland appeared linked to the diet.

  • 1.1. Physiological responses of 13 adult female collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) to high quality and low quality diets, fed for 15 weeks, were examined. The low quality diet simulated energy and protein intake of peccaries during poor range conditions resulting from drought. Blood samples were collected after 10 and 15 weeks of dietary treatment; urine samples were collected after 15 weeks of treatment.
  • 2.2. Females receiving the low quality diet for 15 weeks lost 27.4% of their original body weight, compared to no weight change among high quality-fed females.
  • 3.3. Red blood cell counts, hematocrits, and hemoglobin concentrations were significantly greater among females fed a high quality diet compared to those receiving a low quality diet. High quality-fed females also had a higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. Plasma fibrinogen concentration was nearly twice as great among females receiving the low quality diet compared to the high quality group.
  • 4.4. Consumption of the low quality diet resulted in significantly elevated serum levels of nonesterified fatty acids, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, alpha-2 globulin and alpha globulin: beta globulin ratio.
  • 5.5. Consumption of the low quality diet resulted in significantly lowered serum levels of urea nitrogen, calcium, zinc, calcium: phosphorus, urea index, beta-1 flobulin, beta globulin: albumin ratio, thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
  • 6.6. Serum levels ofcreatinine, total bilirubin, glucose, cholesterol, gamma glutamyltransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, potassium, copper, magnesium, sodium chloride, total protein and gamma globulin were unaffected by diet quality.
  • 7.7. Urine chemistry results suggested pH, osmolarity, albumin, creatinine phosphokinase, calcium and phosphorus concentrations might be useful indices for assessing nutritional status in female peccaries.

  • 2.2. In the presence of fatty acids (C8-C16), methemoglobin F is converted to the hemichrome state more readily than either methemoglobins A or S.
  • 3.3. Using several alkyl ureas (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl), the extent of hemichrome formation was as follows: met Hb F > met Hb S > met Hb A. The ability of these compounds to induce hemichrome formation is related to their increasing hydrophobicity.
  • 4.4. Conversion to the hemichrome state in the presence of urea (5M) led to the formation of molecular aggregates of hemoglobins S, F and A which may be initated by subunit dissociation and conformational changes, coupled to increased globin-globin interactions.
  • 5.5. Similar aggregation occurred for methemoglobin S in the presence of octanoic acid; no significant aggregation was evident for methemoglobin A after 10 hr of exposure to octanoic acid.

  • 1.1. The dietary and inter-organ cholesterol transport in the hemolymph of the bivalve mollusc Diplodon delodontus, was studied. Plasma and hemocytes were obtained after feeding labeled cholesterol to animals or injecting it into the posterior adductor muscle.
  • 2.2. In both cases, cholesterol was incorporated either into plasma or hematic cells.
  • 3.3. Two plasmatic fractions differing in their hydrated densities were recognized as cholesterol carriers and were isolated. They have characteristics of high density (HDL) and very high density (VHDL) lipoproteins, respectively.
  • 4.4. The major lipids in the different classes of lipoproteins were free sterols in HDL and phospholipids in VHDL.
  • 5.5. Neither low nor very low density lipoprotein transporting cholesterol was detected.

  • 2.2. The inhibition is dependent on pH, being strong at pH above 8 and negligible below pH 6.5.
  • 3.3. The kinetic study of the inhibition showed that while the aromatic diamine behaved as a simple competitive inhibitor, the aliphatic diamines presented a more complex pattern of inhibition in which two molecules of inhibitor might bind to the enzyme active site.
  • 4.4. The KI values for the different inhibitors were calculated and the degree of affinity for the enzyme was p-phenylenediamine > putrescine > cadaverine > 1,3-diaminopropane.

  • 1.1. Percentage of triacylglycerols (TG), free fatty acids (FFA) and phospholipids (PL) in the total lipids, the fatty acid composition of each of these lipid classes, and the percentage of cholesterol were determined by gas chromatography in three geographical sources (San Francisco Bay, SFB; Chinese, CH; Colombian, COL) of brine shrim (Artemia sp.) nauplii.
  • 2.2. There were no significant differences among sources of brine shrimp in total lipids, TG or FFA with means for all sources of 17.8, 65.8 and 10.9%, respectively. Percentage of phospholipid was significantly higher in SFB and CH sources of brine shrimp, 25.1 and 26.5%, respectively, than in COL 18.3%.
  • 3.3. Marked differences in percentages of 18:3 (n-3) (linolenic acid) and 20:5 (n-3) (eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA) were found among brine shrimp sources, and concentration of these two fatty acids were usually inversely related within sources. The CH source contained higher concentrations of EPA ( > 9.0%) than the COL and SFB sources (< 5.0%) in all three lipid classes analyzed. No 22:6 (n-3) (docosahexaenoic acid or DHA) was found in any brine shrimp source.
  • 4.4. Fatty acid compositions of the TG and PL were similar and did not differ among sources of brine shrimp, while the FFA had a lower percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, but was similar among sources of brine shrimp.
  • 5.5. Differences in n-3 fatty acid composition indicated a difference in nutritional quality among sources of brine shrimp for feeding larval fish.

  • 2.A sharp decrease in the level of total lipids of blood serum and all tissues occurred during hibernation. Upon arousal, lipogenesis is commonly restored.

  • 1.1. The effects of feeding, food deprivation (14 and 28 days) and refeeding (starved 14 then fed 14 days) on the fatty acid composition of white muscle, liver and brain of pond-raised channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were investigated.
  • 2.2. Levels of n-3 fatty acids were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in white muscle of fish starved 28 days (10.7%) than in fish fed throughout the study (8.0%), due primarily to an increase in 22:6(n-3) docosahexaenoic acid or DHA.
  • 3.3. Significantly higher levels of 20:5(n-3) (eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA) were found in livers offish starved 28 days (P < 0.05) compared to fish fed throughout the study.
  • 4.4. Results suggest that the fatty acid compositions of channel catfish white muscle and liver are subject to only limited perturbation during periods of starvation and refeeding and that the brain is extremely well protected.

  • 1.1. Since soluble corn bran hemicellulose (CBH) was found to reduce serum cholesterol level in the rat fed with a high cholesterol diet, rats were fed with diets containing orotic acid (OA) to investigate the effect of CBH on lipid metabolism.
  • 2.2. Hepatic lipid accumulation induced by OA was reduced by feeding with CBH in rats. The reduction was not due to inhibition of intestinal absorption of OA by CBH.
  • 3.3. Administration of acetate or propionate, colonie fermentation products of CBH, tended to alleviate the hepatic lipid accumulation by OA in rats.
  • 4.4. OA feeding decreased activities of some hepatic enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis except for acetyl CoA carboxylase. The decreases were reversed by the concurrent feeding of CBH.
